Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like how my bird looks more like a cartoon than an
actual realistic bird, It also looks clean. Even though it
has a simple nature you can still tell what animal it is.
What would you improve if you did it again?
I would spend more time on perfecting the shapes as
some of the shapes are not perfect. I would also use
different tools and effects on the feathers.

Evaluation
I like how simple my rotoscope is but also how you
can tell it is a ‘person’.
I would add more details as you cannot tell who
my model is, I would also add more shadows in his
hair and on his face.

Evaluation
I like the different styles and font I used. I also like how I changed every aspect of the fonts.
I would choose multiple fonts to test out to see if the results varied, I would also try different styles.

Evaluation
I like this style because it shows the contrast in colours that you
wouldn’t find on for example rotoscope.
i would spend more time playing about with the
different settings to get different images, I would also
spend more time on the colour.

Evaluation
I liked how different each emotion is, you can differentiate
them from others. I also like how in some of the photos I have
photographed part of the torso allowing us to see body
language as well as facial emotions.
I would use a different range of emotions, mainly more sad emotions. I
would also try full body images to show ‘full’ emotion (body language).

Evaluation
I like the simple nature of the butterfly, even though it is simple you can tell what it is. I
also tried etching with the eye, this is like the style of Where The Wild Things Are
(Maurice Sendak) this gives illustrations more detail.
I would try and draw characters from children’s books that already exist, this would
allow me to try the different styles (block illustration, realistic illustration, simplistic
illustration). This would give me an idea of what style of illustration I would do, if I use
it for my children’s book

Character designs.
Here I have found some representations of the ugly
duckling from various books, we have the hand drawn
and painted illustrations which are complex and
bright whereas there is also the graphics versions of
the character. I like both styles and both suit a
children’s book, in my book I will try to make the main
character (the ugly duckling) different from the rest of
the ducks, in the images below they have represented
him as grey or a brown colour in contrast to the
yellows of the other ducks. The age range for my
children’s book will be from 0-5 year olds, this means
the pictures are important.

Setting/Scenes
In the story The Ugly Duckling, the
ducks live in a small pond. Below I
have found some ideas for the
pond, some simple cartoons that
will work well in a children’s book,
and real ponds that I could use as
inspiration (or to rotoscope later
on). I have also found separate
images of things you would find in a
pond (lily pads, reeds, weeds) to
help make the pond look real and
less block colours, this will also add
depth to the pond.

Font Styles.
I have looked at various font styles
I could use for my children’s book,
I looked at Serif fonts (as they are
used in most children’s books) and
some more unique ones. All of
these fonts are easily readable for
both a child and a parent and are
aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I
liked the first font style because it
has sharp edges and is ‘ugly’,
being similar to the story, this is
the same with the third choice
however this font is Serif giving it a
smoother look. The rest of the
fonts (two, four, five and six) are
simplistic Serif fonts, I chose these
because they are easy to read and
understand but are also pleasing
to the eye. I may use more than
one font for my book (for the title,
text and sounds).

Story Overview

The story I have chosen is the ugly duckling. In the story there are ducks born on a
lake near a farm, one of the ducklings being born different and ‘ugly’ and is then
teased by the other ducks throughout the book, but once it hits maturity it finds out
it’s a swan and flies home with them.
Export Format
PDF & JPEG
Advantages: small file sizes, doesn’t fill up space on the computer. Easy to distribute,
can place anywhere and is easy to email etc.
Disadvantages: JPEG images can lack resolution because of the quick capture the
resolution lowers

Audience
(Think about who you are targeting as your audience. Consider age, gender, class,
location and other characteristics which could define your audience.) The audience
for books is from age 0-7 years (including adults who will read the book to their
children), and is gender neutral (as there is no distinct features for either gender in
the story or in the designs) and not for a particular class of people (this stops
discrimination). The story can be viewed and enjoyed by children of any class and
with any hobbies (as it’s a simple story), my book will be written in English so only
English speaking countries will be able to read my book. How often the child reads
can influence my audience, my book doesn’t have large amounts of block text but
a couple of sentences each page so a child who is starting to be interested in
reading would like my book.
Production Methods
The production methods I will be using to create my book are shape warping (for
the ducks and swans) and maybe find real photographs and rotoscope them (for
the scenery, trees, pond weed etc as the scenery and background make the book) .
I have chosen these methods because they create simple shapes and designs that
will suit the genre and usually easy to see what it is without being overly
complicated (if I do it correctly). These methods also produce ‘good looking’
characters and scenes in my opinion as they are clean and distinctly different.

The mood boards show what characters and
settings you will need to design. The extra detail
given about how to make the pond have more
depth is good and gives a good understanding
about what you are wanting to do. Your mind
map shows that you have thought through all the
essential aspects of creating a children's book.
The mood boards you have produced do not
actually give much detail about the style of
illustration you will use and what your character
styles will look like. I would find an image online
that closest represents the style your final
characters will be most alike.

My feedback had some good and bad points, in every feedback box it says I should
produce another mind map showing dimensions, pages, text etc. and add a few more
details to my annotations and proposal . The positive feedback said I had a good range
of ideas across my work.
Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?
I agree with the point made about my advantages and disadvantages being short
because I could have added more detail to them and explained them better.
I also agree with the point saying that I have considered a wide range of story ideas in
my mood board because I researched many different fairytales and folktales from all
over the world and some of the lesser known ones.
Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?
I do not disagree with any of the feedback I have received because the points made
were true and critical.

A little duckling was very sad because he thought he was the ugliest amongst all his brothers
and sisters. They would not play with him and teased the poor ugly duckling. One day, he
saw his reflection in the water and cried, “Nobody likes me. I am so ugly.” He decided to
leave home and went far away into the woods. Deep in the forest, he saw a cottage in which
there lived an old woman, her hen, and her cat. The duckling stayed with them for some
time but he was unhappy there and soon left. When winter set in the poor duckling almost
froze to death. A peasant took him home to his wife and children. The poor duckling was
terrified of the children and escaped. The ugly duckling spent the winter in a marshy pond.
Finally, spring arrived. One day, the duckling saw a beautiful swan swimming in the pond and
fell in love with her. But then he remembered how everyone made fun of him and he bent
his head down in shame. When he saw his own reflection in the water he was astonished.
He was not an ugly duckling anymore, but a handsome young swan! Now, he knew why he
had looked so different from his brothers and sisters. “They were ducklings but I was a baby
swan!” he said to himself. He married the beautiful swan and lived happily ever after.

Once upon a time on a meadow three duck eggs were ready to hatch. Crack
Crack Crack and one by one out popped the ducklings. Two of the ducklings were
bright and bubbly but the last duckling was grey and dull. The other ducklings
laughed and teased their brother calling him “ugly”, they gave him the name ‘the
ugly duckling’. The Duckling gets sad and looks at his reflection in the pond, ‘I am
ugly, no ones going to love me’ he thought and runs away to hide from his
ugliness. A whole year passes. But one day the Duckling hears a swan swimming
in the pond “she’s beautiful” he said and runs towards the pond, but he remembers
he was ugly and looks at his reflection once more. But gasps in shock. he wasn’t a
Duckling after all he was a… Swan! The two swans fell in love and got married.
They lived happily after. The end.
