Project 1: In this project, you will write a short essay that reflects your belief or passion about a particular part of your professional experience. This project requires you to organize complex and divergent thoughts to write a single page paragraph by paragraph. Your essay is intentionally limited to 500 words to engage you in the structural process of writing. You will refresh basic writing skills and rediscover the building blocks that you will use for longer projects. Consider this a first step in your journey.

4.3 How Do I Evaluate a Source’s Relevance?
Your Road Map to Success: Section 4.3
Learning Outcome 4.3: Identify the criteria used to evaluate the relevance of information.
Why is this important?
You might assume that when it comes to sources for your research paper, the more you have,
the better your paper will be. But quality is more important than quantity. Being able to
evaluate the relevance of information will help you stay focused on your goals by eliminating
unnecessary information.
How does this relate to your success in this course?
Mastering this learning outcome will help you identify and avoid tangential or nonessential
information that could distract you from the central focus on your research.
When evaluating sources, including sources found on the Internet, in the library, or in print, be sure to consider
whether the content meets your needs. This is called determining an information source’s relevance. This goes
beyond simply asking if the source relates to your topic. Rather, how well does it help answer your question or
enhance your understanding? Keep in mind that a resource may not be an exact match or completely answer your
question, but it could describe a certain angle of your topic that you may want to explore further. Therefore, it
could still have value for you. Deciding whether something is relevant to your research is a bit of a judgment
call, but the following strategies can help.
Revisit the Scope of Research
As you consider sources, it’s important to keep the scope of your research in mind. As we explored in Chapter 1,
your research question should be narrowed according to the purpose of the research as well as the audience. A
brief PowerPoint presentation intended to introduce a topic to your classmates, for instance, will require
definitions and other fundamental types of information, whereas a 20-page research essay for your instructor will
require deeper evidence and analyses. Notice how the intended audience dictates the focus and depth of the
information. Content is generally created for different groups, such as practitioners, researchers, the general

public, or maybe special-interest groups within the general public, such as those who belong to certain political
parties, religions, lifestyles, and so on.
In thinking about relevance, Irwin reconsiders the scope of his research once more. He has chosen to focus on
how social networks have impacted business, and marketing in particular. His digital literacy teacher and
potentially his classmates are his audience, so he needs information that is professional but not overly technical.

The 214 Major Report:
1b Finding & documenting sources
Finding sources
You must use at least six sources to write your major report. Before you begin, you have
to know what restrictions, if any, your teacher places on the sources you can use. For
example, he may expect sources to be fairly new (published within, say, the last 2 or 3
years); he may expect sources to adhere to a minimum and maximum length (eg between
one and ten pages); he may require every source to have full bibliographical information
such as an author, a title and a date of publication; he may expect you to use only
reputable websites and read online sources whose authors have a relevant background in
the field; he may expect you to use a variety of source types—both print and non-print—
such as books, ...

COM 510 Final Project One: Research Paper Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
The first summative assessment for this course is preparation of a six-page research paper that will demonstrate your media literacy skills. These skills are
arguably more important in today’s new media environment than any previous point in history. As we navigate our complex new media environment, we all need
the skills to make sense of the messages we receive, the ability to understand how messages are constructed, and be able to see how the meanings within
messages can potentially influence content consumers. Development of the paper is supported by two milestones, which will be submitted in Modules Two and
Three.
This assessment will assess your mastery with respect to the following course outcome:
Demonstrate advanced media literacy skills by researching, verifying, and effectively applying relevant, credible sources of information
Prompt
In this paper you will deconstruct a media message of your choosing. This means you will closely examine an audio-, video-, or text-based news story of your
choice. Note: It must be accessible online by your instructor (For example, a Huffington Post or New York Times article or CNN.com video). Through this process,
you will seek to understand who created the message, who is the intended receiver, how the content was created, what values or biases are present in the
content, and what hidden meanings might be present. You will complete original research and find a minimum of three sources to support your interpretations
and arguments discussed in the following critical elements.
You can fulfill the research requirement for the paper in several ways. One option is to find scholarly resources that support a claim you make in the paper. For
example, you might argue that the author is biased. You could then include research about bias in news reporting. Another option is to research different
persuasive tools beyond those provided in your class readings and use those sources to fulfill your research requirement. Another option is to research more
information on media literacy to include in your discussion. Whichever way you decided to incorporate research is up to you; however, you must use credible
academic sources (click here for more information on identifying academic sources) and use proper APA formatting style. Refer to your APA Publication Manual
for more information about these elements.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in the research paper:
1. Introduction: Provide an introduction to your paper, specifically:
1.1. Provide an overview of the story you selected and indicate what type of medium is used to tell the story (video, audio, words). Answer the question,
“What is here?”
1.2. Include a link to the news article you selected and describe the source of the story. Specifically, who created it?

Editor's Notes
This is an example of an assignment that could be used with this lesson/lecture. A 2 part assignment that includes a portion that the librarian will grade.
“In addition to these objectives my goal for you would be to do some additional critical thinking and come to think about how your information need can be somewhat fluid throughout your research process. You may need to look for general information in order to become acquainted with your research topic before you move to locating your scholarly article and then go back to looking for general information if you come across additional information that you need to familiarize yourself with. This is an information seeking skill that is vital for successful and efficient searching.”
Students are asked to describe what each of the types of information needs – using their own words and examples.
Ask students to identify in the assignment what exactly are the information needs for this assignment.
Short discussion with students about how they use Google as a searching tool and how successful they feel they are in context to different types of information needs.
Students and instructor discuss how Authority is created and contextual as well as having students using their own words to define each of the other terms.
This is a the checklist that should be used while evaluating research, tie this list in with the previous discussion on definitions and how it effects the value of the information.
Think-Pair-Share: Students are to break into pairs, using the open web to define and describe their topic (using reliable sources) and then also locating a scholarly article from an academic database.
Discuss how throughout this session you were able to establish what the information need was, how to apply the criteria, and how they now know how to judge the best information source.
