Editor's Notes
Thanks to Ms.RieraMadurell and Mr. Tatarella. Astronomy born as a practical aid to agriculture and navigation. Throughout the ages has been a highly practical subject.Demonstrate that today astronomy is still a practical subject, unique tool for societal development and capacity building. Practical importance made astronomy dangerous profession to practice in the past. Famous story of the Chinese emperor Yao who in the 8th century BC punished astronomers for failing to predict an eclipse by executing them. I am glad to say that the prestige of astronomers has declined substantially since then. Nowadays, the Commission only cuts off our grants, not our heads.
3 pillars of international development: science, technology and culture. Astronomy is a link to all three.Developing astronomical technology led to many new applications. Wireless internet. Medical imaging.

We all come from the Big Bang. I used to argue that astronomers are almost unique in talking about Billions and Billions as if they understand it. In the last few years this role has been taken over by economists.
