Eugenio Barba is an Italian theatre director and theorist born in 1936. After studying in Norway, he worked with Jerzy Grotowski in Poland for three years, learning his experimental theatre techniques. Barba founded the Odin Teatret group in 1964 and has directed over 65 productions. He developed Theatre Anthropology, the scientific study of performance techniques across cultures. Barba's work focuses on performers' pre-expressive physicality and the transmission of performing traditions.

There is an increasing interest, in the form, function, and potential of personal narratives by artists. My life in Art, by Stanislavski, Diaries and Writings by Bertold Brecht, Threads of Time by Peter Brook, On Directing and Dramaturgy: Burning the house by Eugenio Barba, The Theatre of Death by Tadeusz Kantor, to mention just some the most relevant in the field of personal narratives or accounts of life and work by theatre directors. These texts perform similar tasks in society, such as identifying what a theatre director is, how do directors cope with their biographies or how they build working communities, or learn to act in a unwelcoming context, develop their interests and build their working environments or devise and carry out their projects.
This paper will examine these writings as texts which organize systems of activities, activities and people, as a hybrid genre between theoretical discourse and accounts of personal experiences, a genre which has become a powerful cultural tool in the theatre and pedagogy of today; writing being that most lucid mode of thinking and disseminating thoughts. An indispensable form of conversation with the masters of the past and masters not present.
The analytical method used is based on a series of concepts and tools from Genre Theory and Pragmatics. My goal is to 1) articulate a preliminary framework for the analysis of personal narratives as a way of producing knowledge in the discipline of Theatre Studies 2) examine the utility of these kind of memories o accounts as the basis of passing a director’s knowledge on to others in a structured way, when the artist is not present so that pedagogy, research and artistic practice can make progress 3) encourage theatre directors to write personal accounts of their lives and work so that others can benefit from their experiences.

Assignment: Write an essay responding to this question: Treating this production of
Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex" as a "visual" experience, how does the director Julie
Taymor connect the very different elements of the work - actors, singers, dancers,
puppets, Japanese ·theater techniques, and Western theater tradition to tell all the
various stories involved?
As you watch Stravinsky 's Opera-Oratorio based on Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus Rex, consider the
following .
1. The original Greek text was translated into modern French by Jean Cocteau, and then
translated into Latin. The whole wo rk is sung in Latin .
2. The music is by one of the great 201h century composers , Igor Stravinsky , who was Russian. lri
composing the opera-oratorio , Stravinsky agreed, reluctantly , that there would be a narrator who
would explain the story of the opera in the local vernacular language. This was in case there
were people in the audience who did not understand Latin.
3. This particular production was created as part of a music festival in Japan. The local vernacular
language is , therefore , Japanese.
4. The director of the performance was the American director Julie Taymor, who directed The Lion
King and Spiderman on Broadway . A major part of her training involved the study of traditional
Japanese art forms - Bunraku puppetry techniques , and Kabuki theater- which she employs in
this production , as well as artwork from the very earliest days of Greek civilization. What do you
think is the role of a director?
5. Taymor uses a number of symbols to tell the story as the music is being performed . What, for
instance , do you think the circular platform might mean? Or the red ribbons? What about the
relative sizes of the principal figures in the drama? What other symbols do you observe , and
what do you think they might mean?
6. The Greeks believed that birds and their flight patterns foretold the future . There are many
references to birds in the play. How does Julie Taymor introduce birds into her direction?
Use the notes you took while watching the performance to inform your writing. You are being asked to
demonstrate your understanding of the play , your understanding of the musical version of it, and how
all the very different influences work together. Be clear. Do not use florid language; it doesn 't help .

If history can delineate a country’s heritage, theatre history can also disseminate information about the way of life of a particular place and period. It is a rich treasure that awaits to be unearthed. This paper is an attempt to twist the trend by endeavoring to document the theatrical journey of Gurcharan Das’ play, ‘9 Jakhoo Hill’, which was selected by the critics as the ‘Pick of the Festival’ at the 2004 Grahamstown Arts Festival, South Africa.

The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
