Virtue ethics & Effective Altruism: What can EA learn from virtue ethics?Mikko Kangassalo
Presentation held by Mikko Kangassalo at Effective Altruism Tampere (Finland), Topical Discussions, April 12, 2024
On the topic of what can Effective Altruism and people in general learn from virtue ethics. Gives insight into questions like: What normative ethics do Effective Altruists subscribe to? ; What is utilitarianism? ; What is virtue ethics? ; What can EAs learn from virtue ethics? (with general lessons, examples, six+ virtues for EAs) ; What is cosmopolitan virtue ethics?
Concludes that most EAs are currently consequentialists (utilitarians), yet virtue ethics can help us "do good even better". It helps us to stay good and be good in character, while pursuing doing good; it strengthens our will, improves instinctual habits, counteracts negative consequences of unvirtuousness. Moreover, cosmopolitan virtue ethics can help us map the possibility space for morals, wherein a lot of consequential discoveries can be made not only for our personal lives but for the interests of doing good in the world more broadly.
