 They use multiple forms of recycling and trash reduction to soften the
amount of trash that needs to be trucked out of the park.

4. Pillar 1: Use Resources Efficiently and
Effectively
 Routinely upgrade equipment to save
energy and water.
 Water-saving devices:
 Low-flow toilets, showers, sinks.
 Death Valley National Park, California:
 Installed a 1.23 megawatt solar photovoltaic
system. Generates 2.3 million kWh per year.
 Inn at Death Valley = high-efficiency HVAC
system and energy efficient windows.
 Grand Canyon National Park South Rim,
Arizona:
 Replaced incandescent lights with CFL and LED
lighting.

5. Pillar 2: Strive for Zero Waste
 Continually finding new ways to reuse, recycle, and compost materials.
 Compost bins in guest rooms.
 Eliminated plastic retail bags.
 Replaced individual room amenities with bulk dispensers.
 Stopped selling bottled water at several properties.
 Windstar Cruises: Xanterra installed Natura water systems on-board all vessels,
eliminating plastic water bottles.

6. Pillar 3: Build and Operate Sustainability
 Xanterra developed its own Guidelines for
Environmentally Sustainable Design and
Construction, and to lead the
concessioner industry in green building
and sustainable historic preservation.
 Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
and Montana: Xanterra reclaimed a
formerly contaminated brownfield site,
and constructed the first LEED certified
employee housing in the national parks.
 Zion National Park, Utah: Xanterra’s
renovation of the park’s historic Western
Cabins balanced historical accuracy with
modern-day energy and water efficiency
improvements, and included custom FSC-
certified furnishings.

7. Pillar 4: Provide Guests Sustainable Choices
 Xanterra offers guests a range of
sustainable amenities and options for a
lower-impact stay.
 Locally and sustainably sourced food and
beverage selections.
 Recycling, compost, and linen reuse
programs.
 Free water-bottle-filling stations.
 New electric-car charging station at Zion
National Park.
 Xanterra has also made sustainability a
priority in its For Future Generations retail
concept that sources a large percentage of
Made In America products.

12. HEALTH
 Xanterra provides group ran fitness excursions
through the staff REC department to go on hikes,
play different sports and do all sorts of physical
activities while living on the property.
 They also have different “clubs” that they
encourage the employees to join and be a part of,
for example; the 100 mile hike club, the 500 mile
hike club and the lifetime hiker club. They give
you a booklet and trail guides for the different
paths located on the property you are at, but you
can also hike and record miles from any of the
other Xanterra Parks globally.
 Operation Shrively Apples = the Grand Canyon
South Rim diverted more than 6,500 pounds of
food waste from the landfill provided
supplemental, veterinarian-approved
nourishment to the mules (animal health).

14. LIFESTYLE
 Yellowstone National Park has one LEED
certified Dormitory (Paintbrush Dormitory) as
of right now but are taking the steps to
improve the efficiency of all of their
dormitories.
 Received the highest level of LEED recognition,
platinum.
 The company also supplies reusable water and
rentable cookware and camping gear for the
employees to not only encourage you to keep
drinking water, and go camping and hiking but
it is also an attempt to reduce the amount of
disposable utensils used within the employees.
