SOLUTION FAQ
WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?
Rural communities often lack access to clean and safe drinking water when struck by disasters like floods which
threaten the quality of water and impede relief and long-term recovery efforts. Current solutions, however, are
insufficient, expensive or unreliable. Portable filtration solutions require time-consuming, labor-intensive manual
pumping. Packaged water solutions are expensive due to transportation costs and are an unsustainable long-term
solution. Water tankers are often unable to reach remote locations, and water quality inside them are uncertain and
have a high threat of recontamination.
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
Liquinex has designed a suitcase, the Compact Water Purification System (CWPS), which incorporates
customizable treatment units such as ultrafiltration modules, ultraviolet disinfection and optional metal removal
adsorbents in a briefcase package. The suitcase’s long-lasting ultrafiltration ceramic membrane delivers drinking
water that meets WHO Guidelines (odor and color-free with bacteria and pathogens removed), and has a built-in
backwash function to remove contaminants.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Compact Water Purification System (CWPS) operates on low power from a 12V DC car-battery or a solar
powered battery pack. The suitcase has a high flow rate of up to 500 litres of water per hour at a cost of $0.03
per 100L from a typical 60AH car battery while running continuously. The system makes use of a novel ceramic
ultrafiltration membrane, a UV sterilizer, and a carbon filter to eliminate common contaminants such as suspended
solids, bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.

CLIENT’S PROBLEM STATEMENT
A rural school in Padang, Indonesia, was situated on the hilly slopes of Mt Merapi where students and teachers
were forced to rely on the daily transportation of bulk drinking water by motor vehicles which were prone to
frequent delays and disruptions due to adverse weather conditions.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To provide a reliable water treatment system that can deal with fluctuating feed quality from nearby streams,
while also remaining easily serviceable by the local community and maintaining robust bacterial disinfection
capabilities.
WHAT WAS DEPLOYED
One unit of Liquinex’s Compact Water Purification System was deployed, where more than 100,000 litres of
water was treated and around 200 people/day served for two years.
KEY OUTCOMES
> 100,000 litres of water treated
> 200 people/day served for 2 years
TANGIBLE IMPACT
The school no longer needed to purchase up to
10 gallon bottles of water daily, or buy single-
use plastic water bottles for its students
