This document outlines a project for students to map tsunami evacuation routes in Hawaii using Google Maps and social media. Students will identify if their home or school is in an evacuation zone, map a route to safety, take photos of the route, and share it on Google Maps. They will also provide feedback on a mockup of a tsunami information kiosk and share routes on social media like Instagram. The goal is to better prepare communities for tsunamis and get feedback to improve safety tools. Students are divided into teams and must complete tasks like uploading routes and reviewing others' work within a three-week timeline.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Adding a Social Dimension to the Tsunami
Evacuation Zone Tool
by Leon, Brandon, Jessica
Team Project DUE: Monday, 3/12
Peer Reviews DUE: Friday, 3/16
Description
Although we enjoy the many benefits of being a state surrounded by water, many of us
remain unaware of the dangers associated with a tsunami and are unsure of what
actions to take when the next one strikes. We cannot prevent a tsunami, but we can
prepare for one.
In order to be better prepared for tsunamis, NOAA and the State of Hawaii have
created a tsunami evacuation zone tool that shows whether or not you are in a
tsunami evacuation zone. This information is available in yellow pages, but the tool
makes it accessible via the web or mobile device at http://tsunami.csc.noaa.gov
Although the tool has been around for about six months, there has not been resources
devoted to gathering feedback from the public. In April 2012, the tool will be retrofitted
for a touch screen kiosk that will be installed at the Bishop Museum. Here is a current
mock-up of the kiosk .
Resources
For use with this assignment, the authors have developed two instructional guides:
Resource #1 (Video) For an area in the tsunami evacuation zone, how can you use
Google Maps to map out an evacuation route to safety.
Resource #2 (Google doc) How to upload your evacuation route and accompanying
pictures to a shared Google Map, and share your route with a social media tool (i.e.
Instagram , Flickr ).
These instructional guides will also have polls so that the students can provide
feedback on the proposed touch screen kiosk layout and user experience prior to
installation at the museum.
What is Instagram?

https://etec647s12.wikispaces.com/Tsunami+Project 2/6
Instagram raised $500,000 from Andreessen-Horowitz and Baseline Ventures, and $7 million
from investors.
Instagram is a social photo-media application that can document lifesaving moments. The NOAA
and the State of Hawaii would benefit by using a social media outlet. Instagram has three key
elements to make a successful application:
Local- Photos are identifiable by the public
Social- Users can suggest ideas, share opinions, and publish to Facebook
Mobile- Users can use Instagram on any smart device
Using these key elements, a user can photograph current and public images during an
evacuation.
Although an Instagram Android application is rumored to be
coming out shortly, Android (or Apple) users can use Flickr to
upload geocoded pictures of their evacuation route.
Target audience
The target audience is ETEC 647 students in the State of Hawaii who live, work, (or
attend school) and play near the shoreline.
Performance objective(s)
(1) Find out if your home, business, workplace, and/or favorite beach is in the tsunami
evacuation zone.
(2) Map out an evacuation route to safety.
(3) Take photos of the evacuation route and upload the route and the photos to
Google Map.
(4) Give a group feedback to the mock-up of the Tsunami Evacuation Zone Kiosk.
(5) Use social media tools (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) to share the NOAA Evacuation Zone
Mapping tool and properly document your evacuation route (i.e. Instagram , Flickr ).
Procedure
Week 1
(a) Go to http://tsunami.csc.noaa.gov to see if your home, business, and or school is
in a tsunami evacuation zone. Remember, you can access this on your smart phone or
via the web. If none of these are in the zone, type in the name of a Hawaii beach that
you visit frequently.
(b) Watch an instructional video on how to use Google Maps to map out an
evacuation route to safety. If you have students, you may want to ask the school to
provide you with the tsunami evacuation route for your school.
(c) Walk your evacuation route to make sure that it is feasible (i.e. no obstructions,
3. 5/5/2014 ETEC 647 • Emerging Technologies for Learning • Spring 2012 - Tsunami Project

etc). Take pictures during your walk (geotag, if possible) so that you can upload them
to your evacuation map. Try uploading through social media (i.e. Instagram , Flickr ).
If you are unable to walk your physical route, download Blue Mars Lite (see video
instructions on setting your start point) and do a screen capture of your virtual
evacuation route.
Week 2
(a) Provide online feedback (as a group) to the mock-up (click More --> Full Screen)
of the tsunami evacuation zone kiosk at Bishop Museum. This feedback will be solicited
online, not at the Bishop Museum.
(b) Follow the tsunami evacuation route procedure on how to upload your evacuation
route and accompanying pictures to a shared Google Map.
(c) Post the link to your group's Google Map on this Tsunami Evacuation Map
Linkspage. Within your Google Map URL, remember to include accompanying
pictures/descriptions along your route. If you are unable to walk your route, include a video of your
virtual evacuation route tour. (see Week 1, Step c).
Add a short reflection about why your route was chosen, what you learned, and how
you might improve aspects of this assignment.
(d) Share your evacuation route with family and friends through social media.
Week 3
(a) View 2 other teams' evacuation maps.
(b) Individually, rate and review 2 other teams' evacuation maps.
(c) Respond to other teams' social media posts.
Criteria for Assessment
1. Uploaded tsunami evacuation route to google maps.
2. Online feedback on mock-up of the tsunami evacuation zone touch screen kiosk at
Bishop Museum.
3. Use of social media to share tsunami evacuation route with family and friends.

Feedback Q&A
1. What happens if there is an electrical shutdown during the emergency, backup plans, priorities?
Tsunami evacuation zones can be looked up in the yellow pages so it’s good to have it handy in case
their are issues with power.
2. What are individuals’ motivation, incentives, and personal involvement?
Almost everyone in Hawaii lives, works, or plays near the coast (in the tsunami evacuation zone).
You don’t know where you’ll be when a tsunami strikes so it’s important to have an evacuation plan
(to pin up on your fridge or carry in your phone) in case one does happen.
3. What about those with disabilities, no cell phones or web access, etc?
Everyone should have an evacuation plan. If those with disabilities are unable to get out of the
evacuation zone on their own, they should still have an evacuation plan and have an emergency
contact(s) to inform.
4. Where will the learners leave the feedback on the mockup (will the polls be included in the Prezi
window?)
Yes, you can insert a PollEverywhere poll directly into Prezi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Tbdt-Q8h3HE )
5. Consider any various smartphone technical issues (iphone and android accessible?) and using
other tools like Google+ and alternative apps that are both accessible from the PC and the phone.
The mobile tsunami application (http://tsunami.csc.noaa.gov ) can be reached on any
smartphone (app available for Droid, mobile web site available for iPhone). The application can also be
reached on any computer.
