Two decrees were issued by the king of Persia - the first called for the death of all Jews, while the second allowed Jews to defend themselves against their enemies. On the appointed day, the Jews defended themselves and killed 500 men in the king's palace, along with Haman's ten sons who were plotting further attacks. Though the main decree advocating for their death had passed, some were still determined to kill Jews. Therefore, Esther requested and received permission for the Jews to defend themselves for one more day. Afterward, the days on which the Jews gained victory became known as the feast of Purim, which Mordecai decreed should be annually commemorated.

1. Esther 9
Esth 9:1-4
1 Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on
the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's
commandment and his decree drew near to be put in
execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped
to have power over them, (though it was turned to the
contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated
them;)
2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities
throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay
hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could
withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
3 And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants,
and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews;
because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame
went out throughout all the provinces: for this man
Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

2. Two immutable decrees were on the law books.
The first decree was made by a man who made
the decree without the full knowledge of the
king as to the details of the law. The first decree
sets all of its supporters against the queen who
has twice come unbidden to the king and has
received his acceptance.
The second decree has been made with the
king’s full approval. It was made by the queen’s
cousin who now manages all the wealth and
property of the man hanging on the gallows.
He is arrayed as a king and has the full
authority of the kings upon his hand (the signet
ring).
The first decree is kill the Jews and you will be paid.
The second decree is the king supports the Jews
defending themselves.
It was now for every member of the Persian Empire
to choose which decree he would follow.
The rulers in the kingdom may have has no love for
the Jews.

3. Eccl 9:4
4 For to him that is joined to all the living there is
hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
Mordecai may have been a dog in their opinion but he
was still alive and the lion Haman was dead.
Esth 9:4
4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame
went out throughout all the provinces: for this man
Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
Mordecai becomes on the three Jews to rule alongside
a Gentile king in his kingdom.
Joseph is the prime minister of Pharaoh.
Daniel is made the first of three presidents under
Darius the Mede (Dan 6)
When a Gentile nation in the Bible put a Jew in a high
position of leadership, that nation did well politically
and economically.
Esth 9:5-11

4. 5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of
the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what
they would unto those that hated them.
6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed
five hundred men.
7 And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
8 And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
9 And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
10 The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the
enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they
not their hand.
11 On that day the number of those that were slain in
Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
The enemies of the Jews should have gone into hiding
rather than try to enforce Haman’s decree. Between
the time Haman was hung and the 13th
day of Adar
there were ten sons of Haman were stirring up a group
of people to attack the Jews. The managed to convince
at least 800 people in Shushan (v6, 15)

5. Esth 9:6
6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and
destroyed five hundred men.
Esth 9:15
15 For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered
themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the
month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan;
but on the prey they laid not their hand.
This cult has a large following, 75,000 in the other
provinces.
Esth 9:16
16 But the other Jews that were in the king's provinces
gathered themselves together, and stood for their
lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of
their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not
their hands on the prey,
Satan’s hatred of the Jews is symbolized by one man-
Haman.
Six times in the book of Esther, Haman is referred to
as the Jews enemy (Esther 3:10; 7:4, 6; 8:1; 9:10, 24).

6. Simply put, don’t be anti-Jewish. When a person,
group or nation becomes anti-Jewish the Devil joins
then runs the group.
Esth 9:12-16
12 And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have
slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the
palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done
in the rest of the king's provinces? now what is thy
petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy
request further? and it shall be done.
13 Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted
to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also
according unto this day's decree, and let Haman's ten sons
be hanged upon the gallows.
14 And the king commanded it so to be done: and the
decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's
ten sons.
15 For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves
together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar,
and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey
they laid not their hand.

7. 16 But the other Jews that were in the king's provinces
gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives,
and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes
seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands
on the prey,
Adar 13, has now come and gone, at the end of the
day, the Jews have killed 500 of their enemies and
Haman’s 10 sons. According to Haman’s law, that day
was the only legal day for the Gentiles to attack and
kill the Jews.
There were still a bunch of people in Shushan who
were so dedicated to the destruction of the Jews that
at least 300 make a plot to kill Jews the next day when
no one is suspecting it.
Evidently, Ester has discovered this plot. Esther ask the
king to grant the Jews one more day of “protection”.
As a sign to those who are planning the attack, she has
the 10sons of Haman that were killed hung on the
same gallows as their father.
Prophetically, in the passage we have a man who is
called “the enemy of the Jews”. (a type of Satan and
the Antichrist)

8. He has 10 sons who try to help in the destruction of
the Jews.
In Revelation both the dragon and the beast have 10
horns, they represent ten kings who rule with the
Antichrist.
Rev 12:3
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and
behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and
ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Rev 13:1
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a
beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and
ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon
his heads the name of blasphemy.
Part 2
Esth 9:17-32
17 On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the
fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day
of feasting and gladness.

9. 18 But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together
on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth
thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested,
and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the
unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month
Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and
of sending portions one to another.
20 And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto
all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,
21 To stablish this among them, that they should keep the
fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of
the same, yearly,
22 As the days wherein the Jews rested from their
enemies, and the month which was turned unto them
from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day:
that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and
of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
23 And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and
as Mordecai had written unto them;

10. 24 Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite,
the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to
destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to
consume them, and to destroy them;
25 But when Esther came before the king, he commanded
by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against
the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he
and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name
of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that
which they had seen concerning this matter, and which
had come unto them,
27 The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon
their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto
them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these
two days according to their writing, and according to their
appointed time every year;
28 And that these days should be remembered and kept
throughout every generation, every family, every province,
and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail
from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish
from their seed.

11. 29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and
Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this
second letter of Purim.
30 And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the
hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of
Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
31 To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed,
according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had
enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves
and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their
cry.
32 And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of
Purim; and it was written in the book.
This describes the establishment of a new Jewish feast
day. In the Law, the Lord only gave seven (Lev 23),
each of these has a prophetic significance.
1.The Passover- the sacrifice of Christ on the cross
(1Cor 5:7)
2.The Feast of Unleavened Bread- pictures Christ’s
sinlessness (after the Passover)

12. 3.The First fruits- the resurrection (1Cor 15:23)
4.Pentecost- associated with the Body of Christ (it is
on the first day of the week- Lev 23:16, John
20:19-26) the bread of Pentecost was made with
leaven (Lev 23:17 because the Body of Christ is
made up of saved sinners, not yet perfected)
5.The Feast of Trumpets- the post-Trib. Rapture of
Jewish saints.
6.The Day of Atonement- (Act 3:19-21) takes place
at the Second Advent.
7.The Feast of Tabernacles- the Millennial reign of
Christ.
The Jews have added two more feast.
The Feast of Lights (Hanukkah), it is not a Biblical
fest, it is mentioned in the New Testament (John
10:22) as the Feast of the dedication.
During the 400yrs between the Testaments,
Antiochas Epiphanes defiled the temple by
slaughtering a pig on the altar and spraying

13. its blood over the temple walls. A family of
priests (the Maccabees) revolted against the
Syrians and over threw them. After the war
the temple was cleansed. Supposedly there
was only enough oil to keep the golden
candlesticks lit for one day. According to
tradition God kept the lamps lit for 8 days
until new oil arrived to replenish the
candlesticks.
The other Feast observed by the Jews is found here in
Ester9. It is the Feast of Purim (feast of lots).
It is named after the fact that Haman cast lots to
decide the day the Jews would be killed
