Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Obadiah part 2
1. Obadiah part 2
When the wall of Jerusalem was assaulted the Edomites were
filled with delight (Psalm 137:7).
Their exaltation was brief, within four years Edom itself was
invaded by Nebuchadnezzar and completely overthrown.
The prophecies of Genesis 27:39-40
Gen 27:39-40 39 And Isaac his father answered and said
unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the
earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy
brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the
dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
…were fulfilled (1 Kings 22:47, 2 Kings 8:20-22, 2 Chronicles
21:8-10).
1Kgs 22:47 There was then no king in Edom: a
deputy was king.
1Kgs 22:2
And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat
the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.
2. 2Kgs 8:20-22
Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of
Judah
20 In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of
Judah, and made a king over themselves.
21 So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots
with him: and he rose by night, and smote the
Edomites which compassed him about, and the
captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their
tents.
22 Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah
unto this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.
2Kgs 8:2 And the woman arose, and did after the
saying of the man of God: and she went with her
household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines
seven years.
2Chr 21:8-10 8 In his days the Edomites revolted
from under the dominion of Judah, and made
themselves a king. 9 Then Jehoram went forth with
his princes, and all his chariots with him: and he rose
up by night, and smote the Edomites which
compassed him in, and the captains of the chariots. 10
So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of
Judah unto this day. The same time also did Libnah
revolt from under his hand; because he had forsaken
the LORD God of his fathers.
3. After that we find prophecies against Edom in Jeremiah 49:7-
22, Ezekiel 25:12-14 and here in the book of Obadiah.
Obadiah was God’s messenger to Edom, a hostile kingdom
southeast of Judah.
The land of Edom (Mt. Seir) is a mountainous territory covering
about 3,000 square miles.
South of the Dead Sea and on the border of the Arabian plateau
it is a narrow stretch of steep sandstone, running 100 miles north
to south and thirty miles east to west.
Its northern boundary is at the southern shores of the Dead Sea
and its southern border is at the Gulf of Aqaba. It is barren and
rugged with a few fertile valleys.
It was known in the days of the Exodus as the wilderness of Zin.
Her chief cities, Bozrah and Temen, controlled the great trade
routes from Ezion-Geber, one which led to Egypt and the other
running through Jordan north to Damascus.
She traded with Arabia, India, Africa, Egypt, Syria and Assyria.
The area had mines for copper and iron.
The Edomites felt militarily secure in the fortress of their steep
mountains and wanted nothing to do with Israel’s God.
The city of Petra was the symbol of arrogant self-confidence.
4. The material in verses 10-16 is the Lord’s account of the events
recorded in Jeremiah 52.
Obad 1:14
14Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off
those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have
delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
They slaughtered Judean Jews or “delivered up those of his that
did remain in the day of distress” (vs. 14).
The payday for this evil action is…
Obad 1:15
15For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as
thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall
return upon thine own head.
Jeremiah 49 speaks of this future destruction of Edom (and
Moab) which will takes place when the Lord Jesus Christ
passes over Mt. Seir and Mt. Paran on the way to Mt.
Olivet from Mt. Sinai (Amos 1–2).
Ps 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom
in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it,
even to the foundation thereof.
5. Lam 4:21-22 21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of
Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also
shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken,
and shalt make thyself naked. 22 The punishment of
thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he
will no more carry thee away into captivity: he will
visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will
discover thy sins.
Obad 1:16
16For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the
heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
Jer 25:16-26 16 And they shall drink, and be moved,
and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among
them.
17 Then took I the cup at the LORD'S hand, and made all
the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
18 To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings
thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation,
an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his
princes, and all his people;
20 And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the
land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines,
6. and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of
Ashdod,
21 Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon,
22 And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon,
and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,
23 Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the
utmost corners,
24 And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the
mingled people that dwell in the desert,
25 And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam,
and all the kings of the Medes,
26 And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with
another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon
the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink
after them.
Ps 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and
the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of
the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth
shall wring them out, and drink them.
This is the cup which Jeremiah was told to pass around the
table (Jer. 25:16–26).
This “cup of fury” will be poured out as a recompense for the
heathen getting drunk on Mt. Zion (Obad. 16) following
Nebuchadnezzar’s carnage.
7. Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall
call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in
mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the
LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall
call.
Obad 1:17
17But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be
holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
The house of Jacob will “possess their possessions.”
Their possessions are a land, a temple, a throne, a
mountain, a city, and a Saviour.
Obad 1:18
18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of
Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall
kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any
remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.
Zech 12:6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah
like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of
fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round
about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem
8. shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in
Jerusalem.
This is still to be fulfilled.
The House of Jacob is JUDAH and the house of Joseph.
Ezek 37:16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one
stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of
Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write
upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the
house of Israel his companions:
They will rule the entire land of Edom at the Second Advent.
Obad 1:19
19And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and
they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields
of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall
possess Gilead.
Judean Jews in the south of Judah will possess Seir and Paran
(Hab. 3:3);
9. Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from
mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the
earth was full of his praise.
Judean Jews who dwelt in the western portions of Judah (Josh.
15:45–47) will possess Gaza, Ashdod, Ekron, Gath (Zeph. 2:7),
and Ashkelon (the Philistine plain).
Judg 3:1-4
1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove
Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all
the wars of Canaan;
2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might
know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew
nothing thereof;
3Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the
Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in
mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering
in of Hamath.
4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether
they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD,
which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
Josh 15:45-47 45 Ekron, with her towns and her
villages: 46 From Ekron even unto the sea, all that lay near
Ashdod, with their villages: 47 Ashdod with her towns and
10. her villages, Gaza with her towns and her villages, unto the
river of Egypt, and the great sea, and the border thereof:
Zeph 2:7 And the coast shall be for the remnant of the
house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of
Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD
their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.
Those dwelling in north Judah (Josh. 15:54–60) will possess the
south end of Samaria and Ephraim,
Josh 15:54-60 54 And Humtah, and Kirjatharba, which
is Hebron, and Zior; nine cities with their villages: 55
Maon, Carmel, and Ziph, and Juttah, 56 And Jezreel, and
Jokdeam, and Zanoah, 57 Cain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten
cities with their villages: 58 Halhul, Bethzur, and Gedor,
59 And Maarath, and Bethanoth, and Eltekon; six cities
with their villages: 60 Kirjathbaal, which is Kirjathjearim,
and Rabbah; two cities with their villages:
Those of Benjamin will possess “Gilead” in TransJordan as
prophesied in Ezekiel 48:23.
Ezek 48:23 As for the rest of the tribes, from the east side
unto the west side, Benjamin shall have a portion.
Obad 1:20
11. 20And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall
possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the
captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the
cities of the south.
“And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel” (vs.
20) refers to the northern tribes,
Israel will take the Canaanites’ possessions clear up to
Elijah’s city of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:9).
1Kgs 17:9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which
belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I
have commanded a widow woman there to
sustain thee.
“the captivity of Jerusalem” (vs. 20) refers to the southern
tribes.
The Judean Jews will come back from Sepharad (Gen. 10:30),
which is a double reference to a “mount of the east” (beyond
Babylon) and to a region in northwest Asia Minor.
Gen 10:30 And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou
goest unto Sephar a mount of the east.
12. Obad 1:21
21And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the
mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S.
1John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death
unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not
his brother abideth in death.
Phil 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be
fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the
working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto
himself.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did
predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that
he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Matt 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor
are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in
heaven.
Judg 5:10 Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in
judgment, and walk by the way.
Ps 149:5-9 5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them
sing aloud upon their beds. 6 Let the high praises of God
13. be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand; 7
To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments
upon the people; 8 To bind their kings with chains, and
their nobles with fetters of iron; 9 To execute upon them
the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise
ye the LORD.
Rev 20:2-4 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old
serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a
thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and
shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should
deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should
be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and
judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them
that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the
word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast,
neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their
foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned
with Christ a thousand years.
“And the kingdom shall be the LORD’S” (vs. 21)
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were
great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world
are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ;
and he shall reign for ever and ever.
14. There are ten importantlessons found in this little
book.
1. God is mindful of the deeds of the wicked.
2. He will bring ultimate judgment upon them.
3. His compassion is never fully removed from His people.
4. Pride is the basis of man’s sin against God and others.
5. Earthly security will fail in the hour of God’s judgment.
6. Hatred leads to unrighteous behavior.
7. We must beware sins of omission.
