Comparing Clueless and Emma Essay
CLUELESS VS. EMMA Adaptations of Jane Austen s, Emma, are usually period pieces diligent in
capturing and replicating the manners, dress, language and values of the original text. Clueless,
written and directed by Amy Heckerling, deviates drastically from the norm, as the film is not a
period piece. While Emmais set in the early nineteenth century in the country village of Highbury,
sixteen miles out of London, England, Clueless is set in Bronson Alcott High School almost two
hundred years later, in the late twentieth century. Despite the significantly different geographical
and historical setting and the diverse social values, lifestyles, and issues than those depicted in
Emma, Amy Heckerlings high school setting retains and is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although Highbury s residents show much regard for decorum, gossip is an inherent
characteristic in both Highbury (xvi) and Bronson Alcott High School as means of spreading
news, knowledge, and in criticizing. In Highbury everyone knows everyone else s affairs, even
that the Perrys are speculating about buying a carriage. When Frank goes all the way to London
for a haircut he is considered a fop . The prevalence of gossip is also evident in the everyday life
of Bronson Alcott, Cher is able to give specific information about Christian s parents joint custody
although she has not met him. Later Cher gossips about the reputations of the various social groups
sitting around the school.
Both the novel Emma and the film Clueless reflect the societies of their times and use the
acceptable forms of language for their settings. In Emma the characters use the expected for
formal language in their direct and indirect speeches. Harriett addresses her friend as Dear Miss
Woodhouse, and Mrs. Elton shocks everyone saying Jane and Knight without appropriate titles. In
Clueless however, Cher, her father and Josh speak in informal everyday language most of the
other speech is in slang, whatever or referring to attractive guys as a Baldwin and pretty girls as a
Betty. Satire and irony provide then humour in both the novel and

A Sociological Perspective On Homelessness
Currently, the rates of homelessness in America continue to drastically increase. The U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (2012) depicted how many people are
homeless in a single night in America. The findings revealed that there were approximately
633,782 people who are homeless in America or 20 out of every 10,000. Approximately 394,379
are single individuals and 239,403 are people in families with 77,157 homeless families in a
single night, and approximately 162, 246 are children. Veterans are more likely to be homeless
than those who are non veterans, approximately 29 out of every 10,000 veterans are homeless.
Unfortunately, 38 percent of those who are homeless are unsheltered, either living on the streets or
in places that are not suitable for human inhabitation. Most states account of for less than 1% of
homeless population, whereas Texas contains approximately 5.4% of America s homeless
population. In San Antonio, there are approximately 2,981 people who are homeless each day,
and 1,243 are unsheltered. Through a sociological perspective, the social problems of
homelessness can be analyzed through the concept of sociological imagination, the comparison of
the person blame approach and the system blame approach, and through the analysis of one s own
community s effort in helping those who are homeless. Firstly, C. Wright Mills concept of
sociological imagination is stimulated by a willingness to view the social worlds from the
perspective of others

Animal Service Research Paper
The idea of volunteering, giving one s free time in exchange for a warm feeling of
accomplishment or satisfaction in the selfless act of doing good. Whatever our motivations, most
of us have ideals we are willing to stand up for and do something about. I care for a great many
things; the well being of dogs (animals in general) and our environment are amongst the most
important to me. Let us focus on the volunteer opportunities available at Orange County Animal
Services as compared to those offered locally by a non partisan group called the Citizen s Climate
Lobby. Although both are worthy causes, saving dogs and protecting the environment differ in the
skill set, the varying levels of commitment, and the scope of impact involved. One must... Show

Furthermore, it brings people together to bond with animals and each other, enhancing the
community. Education and awareness can go a long way to solving most problems and dog rescue is
no exception. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA), approximately 7.6 million companion animals are admitted into shelters in the United
States every year; 3.9 million are dogs, of which 1.2 million are euthanized and only 1.4 million
are adopted (the numbers for cats are very similar). That works out to nearly a 35% adoption
rate, 41% rate of euthanization, and 26% are strays returned to their homes. Two times the
number of dogs come into shelters as strays as opposed to being surrendered by their owners.
There are several reasons people surrender their dogs; per the American Humane Association,
29% are surrendered because people live in or move to homes that do not allow pets, while
reasons such as a lack of adequate time to care for the animal, divorce and death, and behavior
issues make up 10% apiece (with various other issues occupying the remainder). There are 70 80
million dogs owned in the United States which works out to around 37 47% of households; 28%
of dogs come from breeders while 29% are adopted from shelters and most of those are through
friends and acquaintances. Per the American Veterinary Medicine Association roughly 40% of pet
owners find their pets by referrals from various sources. Around 13,600 independent animal shelters
operate nationwide employing such monikers as humane society and SPCA, but those
organizations are not affiliated with the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. Its
impossible to determine the number of stray dogs every year, but statistically the average female
has one litter (four to six puppies) each year of fertility. Many end up as strays; a lot of

Persuasive Essay On Knicks
Since the beginning of time, people have played sports. Unfortunately, some people can t play,
but they love to pay and watch others play instead. NBA games are by far the most interesting
professional sports event to attend. It s amazing to see the gigantic men in real life instead of on
your television screen. You make amazing memories with the people you go with because the
games are extremely fun. All you need for a great NBA game is a skillful team, lively fans, and
some delicious, reasonably priced food. Is that too hard to ask for? Apparently, for some teams,
it is. Let s face it, if your home team is terrible, like the Knicks and the Nets are, you go to the
games just to see the hyped up teams and get cheaper tickets closer to the court. This season, the
Knicks are in fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12 wins and nine losses, which is
much better than last year s record. It isn t worth seeing a game there if you have already been to
one because the only thing they are consistent at is choking in the fourth quarter. When the
players on the Knicks and the Nets make millions of dollars, you would think they can make a
lay up or two in high pressure situations. The Nets are 14th with a record of five wins and 15
losses. Due to the train lines, the Barclay s Center is much... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Pawnee Tribe Tribe Essay
There are many Plains indians tribes, all unique in their own ways. One of the most unique tribes
that stand out among the rest is the Pawnee tribe. The Pawnee tribe is really known as the
Pawnee tribe of Oklahoma. The Pawnee are originally from Kansas and Nebraska but they were
forced to move from these states and had to be moved onto a reservation in Oklahoma. They were
moved onto this reservation in Oklahoma in the 1800 s, and most of the tribehave been in Oklahoma
ever since. On their reservation, they have many ways that they are organized unlike other Plains
Indian tribes. The Pawneehave their own police, laws, government, and their own public services.
Although it may seem, that since they have all these things, it makes them a small country
inside of a country, the people of the Pawnee tribe are still U.S. Citizens and therefore have to
follow American laws. Even though the Pawnee tribe is originally from the states of Nebraska
and Kansas, they are federally recognized as being from Oklahoma. The Pawnee group of people
are unique in many different ways. The men, women, and children all have different jobs than each
other. The men were usually the hunters and went to war to protect their family only when needed.
The men would take their children, usually boys, on hunting and fishing trips. The women of the
tribe would cook, take care of the children while the father was out, and they were the farmers as
well. The children of the tribe would go to school, help

Dragonfly Research Paper
Now that we have covered what exactly an arthropod is and why they (specifically the
uniramians class) are so successful, we can focus on one specific organism and look deeper into
how they evolved to be so successful in the environment they are in today. The organism that we
are going to be focusing on is the dragonfly. The dragonfly has been around for 300 million years
and has manage to stay alive and thrive in its environments. Back then an ancestor of dragonflies
roamed the planet, its name was Meganeura. Meganeura is a genus of extinct insects from
approximately 300 million years ago, they are related to modern day dragonflies. In this group
one member known as M. permiana was first described be researchers in Kansas in 1937 as
having a wingspan of over 2 feet or 0.6 meters long. It is still considered one of the largest insects
ever to be alive on this planet. To better understand why prehistoric dragonflies were bigger than
modern ones we must go back in time to take a look at what potentially happened and how the
dragonfly evolved into what it is today.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wingless insects first appeared approximately 380 million years ago. The evolution of insects
happened in four stages but for the dragonfly it appears in the second stage so we will only be
looking into the first and second stages. The first stage is called the Apterygote stage, this term
broken down basically means without wings. During this stage the simplest forms of insects were
developed. They had no wings, or developed leg/ body parts. They also did not go through
metamorphosis, instead they went through something known as ametabolous development.
Ametabolous development basically means that the immature closely resembles the adult except

Downtown Victoria Architectural Analysis
Downtown Victoria is filled with a great deal of architectural structures that vary in style from old
Eurocentric to modern. As you walk the streets of Downtown Victoria it is hard not to notice the
beautiful Eurocentric inspired buildings that make you feel as if you are touring an old city in
Europe. Although many of the more unique buildings are small, they display plenty of character
through their colours, shape and materials. Victoriahas modernized some aspects of its architecture
but it has managed to keep many of its aged and Eurocentric inspired buildings that capture Victoria
s character. As I roam the streets of Downtown Victoria what catches my eye instantly are the

I took a sunny afternoon to take a walking tour of Downtown Victoria and there were various
buildings that gave me different feelings as well as having my mind make connections to
buildings I ve seen elsewhere. First being 560 Yates Street s Oriental Building, where I was
reminded of a New York Citystyle apartment which was short, made of rustic red brick,
displaying rounded window followed by having that tinted brown giving it that old and dirty
look. Then there was a sudden switch as I came across 1675 Douglas Street s Terasen Gas
Building. The Terasen Gas building was very generic and modern office looking building. This
type of building was one where if you came across a photo of it, you wouldn t be able to pin
point where it came from, meaning it could be anywhere in the world. The last and top favourite
building that struck out to me was Centennial Square s City Hall building. This building was my
favourite for various reasons one being able to capture that Eurocentric feel that happens to be
one of my favourite styles of buildings. It also really captured the eye with its bold red brick
colour and unique shape; it s almost impossible to miss. The outstanding thing about Victoria is the
fact that its kept so many of its older structures and is still able to give the small city character.
Often with big cities there is constant

Pride And Prejudice By Jane Darcy Essay
When pride encounters prejudice. The novel Pride and Prejudice revolve around two characters
Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from different socioeconomic class and their impression
of each other. As the title indicates, one character is prideful and the other prejudice. As the
protagonist of the novel, Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice feelings in to find happiness. But the
path towards finding romantic happiness involved two phase in the novel: the first phase involved
Elizabeth finding Mr. Darcy to be abhorrent in the beginning and the second phase is involved her
overcoming her misconception of Mr. Darcy. The shift in Elizabeth perception of Mr. Darcy leads
to her falling in lovewith Mr. Darcy. The first impression is the hardest impression to overcome.
Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy did not have a very smooth first interaction. Because of his social status,
Mr. Darcy comes across as very pride during his first interaction with Elizabeth. Mr. Bingly (Mr.
Darsy s friend) suggests that Mr. Darcy dances with Elizabeth at a social event a ball. She
[Elizabeth] is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me; I [Mr. Darcy] in no humour to
present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. It is at this even that
both characters reveal their flaws to each other. Instead of saying no politely, Darcy shows his
prideful character by insinuating that Elizabeth was not charming enough for him. On the other
hand, the comment by Darcy causes

Trunk Flexion
We found that the muscle strength of trunk flexion showed significant differences within group and
between groups. The results of the trunk back extension showed significant differences within
group. Our result of increased trunk strength was similar to previous study results. Within group
difference of muscleactivation was higher in the BLSE group than in the HLSE group. This
implies that the EO and RA were activated as the agonist of trunk flexion, and that muscle
hypertrophy can increase strength of trunk flexion when activated by the EO and RA. One
study showed EO activated approximately 32% of MVIC by bracing and 12% of MVIC by
hollowing (Grenier McGill, 2007). The % EMG max values in RA was 18% in the bracing
strategy, while the RA value was approximately 6% in the hollowing strategy(Maeo et al., 2013).
Thus, we suggest that trunk flexion strength would be increased by muscle hypertrophy if the
bracing strategy is applied in side plank exercise and prone plank exercises, which activate EO and
RA, for 12 weeks.
In trunk back extension, the % EMG max value of ES was 20% in bracing group and 10% in
hollowing group, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

scale clinical studies are necessary to identify the therapeutic effectiveness of hollowing and bracing
strategies; male participants and broad age groups must be studied to increase power and to detect

Sasuke! A girl with long blonde hair tied back in two pigtails wearing a long white dress cried.
Her wide cerulean eyes wavered as her lover walked toward her. What are you doing here? You
know you can t be here. She said, stepping forward slightly. She stared into the eyes of the man in
front of her. His raven hair framing his pale face, that glistened in the moonlight.
Sasuke reached out his hand, taking her hand in his own. He crouched on one knee, and kissed the
girl s hand lightly. I will never leave your side, no matter the danger, Naruko. Naruko frowned,
feeling the emotions and hearing his thoughts. She fell to her knees, still holding on to Sasuke s
hand.
But you must! It s too dangerous here! She cried.

The simple answer to this question is no. However, many situations, history, and aspects, acts and
laws, need to be taken into consideration to have a full understanding of what the government has
done and has not done to help the indigenous people in Canada. It must also be noted that many of
the things the government implemented to help, actually backfired and caused more harm than

Women In Medieval Times
A woman in medieval times was not considered a person, but property. A woman would be
forced to wear layers of drab clothing, the style determining their social class ranking. A woman
of wealth would wear decadent gowns and women in poverty would wear plain spun dresses.
Their goal in life was to find a husband, to give in to his whims and be the epitome of submission.
Sometimes, peasant girls would be forced to take up a trade prior to marriage. After the marriage,
she was forced to give up this trade, the skill she possessed, and either maintain the lifestyle as a
housewife, or help her husband with his trade. In regards to whom a womanmarried, there was little

A woman s alternative would be becoming a nun, giving up all social freedoms and dedicating
your life to serving the poor and God. Women who were subject to this life received a much
more thorough education than other women, in order to properly learn religious concepts and
theory. Otherwise, a woman s education was limited to basic reading abilities paired with
instruction on how to do homely activities. A woman of this time period had utterly no voice in
politics. Law was man s law. The life of these women were controlled by the men who surround
them, their opinions meaning little to nothing. The life of a woman in medieval times was bleak
and varied little. Romantic literature was on the rise, full of damsels in distress that only further
perpetuated negative stereotypes of women during these times. These romances were full of
helpless women in situations only a man could get them out of, or else they would be doomed.
Despite this cultural oppression of women in this time period, some strong female characters were

The Decline Of Human Cultural Diversity
Languages are being rapidly lost, at a rate of extinction. Serious concerns over the impending loss
of human cultural diversity have caused many organizations to actively start engaging in the
upkeep of languages. Early studies have identified areas with a high number of endangered
languages, and preformed investigations. What they came across was the population size of the
culture, and how vast of an area the language is spoken in, are key factors to the decline of
languages. Other factors include; mass genocide, evolution, economics growth or decline, religion,
a change in culture can be a partial cause for the endangerment or extinction of a language. The
main factor is usually when a more powerful and pronounced language over takes the smaller
subdivision languages, somewhat related to what the Lingua franca. An example of this would be
in Canada. In parts of Canada such as Quebec the primary language is French, but in other many
places in Canada, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Montreal, the primary language is English, so French is
become less common throughout the country. The more powerful and know language allows for
less language barriers, and allows easier communication. So what does it mean for a language to
become endangered? It means extinction may be in the near future. Only a few people still speak
the language and when they become deceased the language will soon cease to exist, unless they
preserve documents or it continues to get passed on. How many languages

elitism (Lui 2000, 141). Chronologically speaking, the Tiananmen incident began as of April 15,
1989, when Hu Yaobang died. For example, posters appeared at Beijing University on April 15,
mourning Hu as a fallen hero (Lin 1992, 3). Hu s death is therefore, seen as a catalyst of the
student protests since many students supported his stand against corruption and party elitism. They
saw him as the their only non corrupt and democratic official; but more importantly, their call for
democracy and freedom (Chiu 1991, 332). On April 16, 1989, many students gathered to attack
the government, which led to the following democratic demands on April 17; out of the seven

After the death of Zhou Enlai in 1976, major demonstrations took place in Beijing where protestors
were calling for the end to oppressive policies of the Cultural Revolution; in December 1986,
student demonstrations escalated into nation wide movements protesting the absence of democratic
reforms (Teiwes and Sun 2004, 212). In a similar sense, in 1989, Hu s death gave the demonstrators
another reason to comemorate his death and again call for democratic reforms. In addition, a
number of participants in the Democracy Wall movement of 1978 and 1976 demonstration in
Tiananmen Square were university faculty members in 1989, and many of them, most notably Feng
Lizhi, played a role in framing the issues publicly and signaling students to participate in the
movement against corrupt governments (Mason and Clements 2002, 173). Andrew Nathans (1990)
argued that by 1989, what had started as congeries of small, isolated, clandestine groups, had grown
step by step through the Tiananmen Square Incident of 1976, the Democracy Wall movement of
1978 79 etc. into a national force in 1989, that had the participation or sympathy of almost all

The Teamsters Union
The Teamsters Union derived from a group of people who fought for the freedoms most Americans
do not appreciate today. They stood together to develop the American Dream to start union and
labor movement. This advancement helped the working and living standards for the people of
America, gaining privileges and rights within their communities and families. Teamstershas the
most strength and diverse labor union in North America. The group began by connecting two
leading team driver associations in 1903. Team Driver s International was the original name, then
becoming the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and years later going by The Teamsters
Union. They were the sturdiness of economic growth in America, but needed to come together to
seize their participation with corporations tending to be more self concerned. The Teamsters Union
still has the same goals and tactics today. They are striving for change on global labor and trade,
state and living wages, the United States Labor alone, and social justice.
Teamsters strive to help workers who want to bargain collectively. As management enforces a set
agreement and sign it, the Union works to make it happen and hold the management to its
standards. Contracts under Teamsters can guarantee fair wages, proper promotion, health
insurance, job safety, off time pay and retirement pay. The Teamsters earliest strike was made up of
4,600 people from Chicago against Montgomery Ward. The strike did not go as planned and

The Incan tribes extended from the coastal sections to the highlands and part of Quito. Quito

Four years later close to the river of Guayas, another Spanish settlement was established, which
is now known as Guayaquil. Francisco Pizarro discovered and took control of Peru, he then
founded the settlements of the highland, basins, and coastal lands, which he extended Spanish
rule over. Ecuador was part of the Viceroyalty of Peru until 1740, then it was reassigned to the
Viceroyalty of New Granada including Venezuela and Columbia. Ecuador lacked gold and silver

Teacher Reflection Paper
Introduction: I have learned a lot for the short period of time that I have been in school in
Guadalajara. Thanks to the ten teaching practices I have had lots of hours to practice my teaching.
I went from knowing absolutely nothing about teaching, to feeling like I can teach any subject in
English at ease. I understand what to do, and what not to do in a classroom setting. My observers
helped me improve my teachingfrom adequate to a professional standard.
What is a good teacher?
A good teacher is one that has a passion for teaching. A good teacher is one that is takes pleasure in
seeing their students comprehend their lessons. Being able to connect with your students is an
important part of being a teacher. If you can t connect with your students, you cannot teach them
properly. Another element to being a good teacher is making sure that no student feels left out. A
good teacher will utilize every student to make sure that everyone understands the objective and is
learning properly.
Strengths and Weaknesses: One of my strengths as a teacher is being able to get along well with
the students. In none of my classes did I have a class where I did not vibe well with one of the
students. I always try my best to get every student to participate. When I see a student struggling
with the lesson I utilize other students to explain to them what is going on. My weakness
would most likely be my pacing. On multiple occasions I failed to finish my entire lesson plan, and
on some occasions, I finished my lesson plan too fast. I would like to be able to better pace my
lesson plans so that I don t feel as rushed to finish, or anxious I will finish early.
Teaching Approaches: I find the direct method to be the best method in teaching English. In the
Direct Method, language is taught inductively and the target language is used exclusively. (ITTO,
Page 119) For teaching grammar, I believe teaching inductively cements the grammar structure into
the student s minds. It uses the students own thinking ability to figure out the grammar structure of
a sentence. This allows students to better understand what they are being taught. It also makes it
easier for students to better use the grammar when they are making their

Ipads in the Primary Classroom
The introduction of the iPad/Tablet in Schools In 2010, apple introduced it s newest technology,
the iPad, which promised to bring mobile technology into every home and classroom. With the
introduction of the iPad comes new considerations for learning and pedagogy. (Sheppard, 2011)
McKenna (2012) suggests that the internet is as common a school fixture as lockers and library
books. Additionally schoolwork is one of the most common activities performed online. One of the
motivators for schools to adopt iPads was the ability to use interactive textbooks. The portability of
the iPad made it not only easier to carry than several text books, but easier to use. The other
motivator to iPads and digital textbooks is that the interactive features and capabilities. Digital
textbooks can be updated to contain the most current information.
Pedagogical shift VS. Technology Implementation An appropriate pedagogical framework is
necessary to incorporate iPads into the classroom (McKenna, 3, 2012) It is important that educators
are aware of the difference between technology integration which involves new literacies and
curriculum integration. Newman (2013) notes (as cited in Hutchinson, Beschorner, Schmidt
Crawford, 2012) that research indicates that much of the technology used in literacy classroom is in
the form of technology integration as opposed to curriculum integration.

The True Nature Of Cheerleading Essay
As human beings, it is natural to judge people who are different than ourselves. Most often these
judgements are based off of common beliefs, or stereotypes. Stereotypes apply to every group,
from the slow moving elderly to lively cheerleaders. Usually these beliefs do not describe every
person in a group, but they all receive the same labels. Cheerleaders make up one group that is
commonly stereotyped, but many people don t know the true nature of cheerleading.
Countless stereotypes that I have about cheerleaders have been ingrained into my mind by the
media, and from personal experience. From what I had observed in high school, cheerleaders are
the popular girls with plenty of friends. Not being associated with a cheerleader meant that you
weren t on the map. Promiscuity was also an extremely prominent stereotype in high school, which
had always shocked me since the cheerleaders seemed like a nasty group of girls. Cheerleaders
also have a reputation of being air headed or simply not intelligent. As an outsider, they did not
give me the impression of being book smart, especially at my high school. Another stereotype that
I have is that cheerleaders aren t entirely athletic. Yes, cheerleading is a sport. Yes, it can be
dangerous and it does take work. However, cheering doesn t look like it requires the same level of
effort and intensity as multiple other sports. These are all widespread beliefs about cheerleaders
that I have come to expect from them.

For Tesco to set its goal and to satisfy all its stakeholders (customers, suppliers, employees, the
society) it is important to identify and analyse its five performance objectives. These objectives
consist of:
The quality objective: want to do things right
The quality objective for Tesco means that the operation manager makes sure of that the store
environment looks good so that it attract customers, and that they provide customer service. If
Tesco provides good customer service and makes sure of keeping the environment looking good,
the customers are more likely to come back instead of going to Tesco s competitors.
The quality inside the operation is also important. If someone makes a mistake within the operation,
time and money must be spent correcting this mistake.
If the operation have not reordered all the goods they need, this can lead to irritated customers and
lower revenue for the operation.
The speed objective: want to do things fast
The speed objectives is concerned with how long time it will take the customer to get to the store,
buy the product and arrive back home again. The customers would like to do this as quick as
possible and Tesco s operation managers should try to make this process quicker than its
competitors.
Speed is also important inside the operation. If the movement of materials and information is not
quick enough, this could delay the process of serving the customers as quickly as possible.

The Reformation And The Protestant Reformation
The 16th century reformation is also known as the Protestant reformation. There are a various
number of causes for the Protestant reformation. The causes of the reformation will be analyzed
from two different perspectives: Germany s causes and Europe s causes. The results of reformation
will be examined. Major contributors such as Martin Luther and John Calvin s perspectives and
contributions will also be analyzed and the impact they had during their time period.
People in Europe during the early 16th century faced a lot personal grievances with the church. This
provoked a reformation which is known as the Protestant reformation. The reformation began in
1517, and ended in 1648. The ideas of people such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Henry VIII
caught several peoples eye because of this. They provided different views, and ideas that many
never thought about. Europe and Germany had different reasons for the reformation, and because
of this had different outcomes.
Martin Luther was a german university professor and a priest who challenged some of the church s
doctrines. Mr. Luther was concerned with sin and penance for those sins; he challenged the idea of
buying indulgences, which were believed to bring forgiveness for all sins. Luther wrote Ninety five
Theses on the Power of Indulgences ; which stated that indulgences undermined the seriousness of
the sacrament of penance, completed with the preaching of the gospel, and downplayed the
importance of charity in

Trickster-God-Creator
Tricksters appear in the mythology and folklore of many cultures around the world. Although the
power and relative divinity of each Trickster varies from tradition to tradition, Tricksters have
important roles in the creation, development, and sometimes destruction, of each culture. The
Coyote of Native North American traditions is often depicted as assisting the Great Mystery or
Great Spirit in the creating and populating of the world (Leeming). In the Greek myths Hermesis
initially a sly infant who captures a tortoise with his untruths and fashions the first lyre from its

Coyote is sometimes purely self concerned, such as in the Sioux story of Coyote, Iktome, and the
Rock (Leeming 50 2), providing the subject for cautionary morality tales. He is also often the
victim of his own pride, such as his attempt to stay awake by propping open his eyes in order to
be the first to arrive at Spirit Chief s lodge at dawn and receive a new name. Coyote falls asleep
anyway, retains his name, and creates a permanent slant in his eyes (Dove 17 26). At other
times, however, Coyote is selfless and miraculous. In the tale of Montezuma and Coyote in
Canoes, from the Papago tradition of Arizona, after the Great Mystery has made the earth, and
people have been made to populate it, led by Montezuma, Coyote comes to the great leader of
men and instructs the chief to build a canoe. Montezuma doesn t understand why he would need
a canoe, but before long a flood of Biblical magnitude washes away the land, and only Coyote
and Montezuma survive to lead the new people the Great Mystery creates to repopulate
(Leeming 110 11). It would seem easier to allow even the chief to perish in the flood if Coyote
really is purely the self important Trickster so often depicted, but he seems intuitively to know
that Montezuma will be a better leader to teach the people all the things they would need to know
to survive (111). Similarly, in the story of Coyote and the Footrace, Coyote allows his own son to
be killed in order to teach the rituals for burial of the dead

Euthanasi Euthanasia And Assisted Suicide
Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide Many people here in the United States believe that euthanasia,
often called assisted suicide is wrong because of the Hippocratic Oath doctors take. Others argue
it should be up to the patient. In most cases if a physician says they are terminal and only have
six months to live they can agree up receiving a prescription for a lethal dosage of medication to
end their lives. I believe it is a personal freedom that we should not deny people; we should not
force them to have to pay for medication to dull the pain and prolong the suffering. According to
dictionary.reference.com the definition of euthanasia is, the act of putting to deathpainlessly or
allowing to die, as by withholding extreme medical measures, a person or animal suffering from an
incurable, especially a painful, disease or condition. When I think of euthanasia or assisted suicideI
always think of Dr. Kevorkian first, because he was well known for assisting patients with
suicide. This of course stirred up much controversy over whether or not we have a right to die.
After looking up Dr. Kevorkian on biography.com I learned more about him such as that Dr.
Kevorkian received most of his media attention after assisting a woman with a suicide in the back

Human Rights passed the important stages of development since 2nd World War and became an
influential factor in international relations. At the same time, transnational crime has showed a
significant increase. In this sense, the international community has reacted by establishing strong
legal mechanisms and intensifying the preparation process of international agreements for the
creation of a more favorable climate. Extradition is regarded as an effective tool in the fight against
transnational organized crimes. Inevitable, there are divergences on the inclusion of human rights

extradition procedure. However, main regulations of current treaties play an important role to
define the categories of extraditable offences, obligations of states and human rights aspect of
extradition at international and regional level. As one of the first regional instruments for

Blindness In Cathedral By Raymond Carver
Looking But Not Seeing
The title of the story Cathedral by Raymond Carver is a far cry from the themes that run through
the story. Naturally, one would expect the story to centre on worship but it does not only
mentioning it in passing. Admittedly, one of the themes that clearly come out of the story is an
apparent blindness of the narrator who though physically had sight could not see the deeper things
in life. On the other hand, Robert, the physically blind man was very insightful able to appreciate
the beauty of life. Robert, the blind man finally assists the narrator to see through drawing of the
cathedral.

The fact that the narrator s wife could trust him, to pour out her emotional turmoil was a clear
indication to this. It can be safely said that Robert s responses to the narrator s wife kept her strong

desire to learn new things. After all, the smoking of cannabis was his first time.
Undoubtedly, the story captures the narrator as a person who is very cold in his associations
with people. The description of the wedding between Robert and Beulah as not worth attending
by anyone is utter insensitivity on his part. Further, the way he describes the blind man s eyes is
very distasteful, As I stared at his face, I saw the left pupil turn in toward his nose while the other

The Philosophy Of Social Science
Hollis expresses his intention to explore the philosophy of social science of which he categorises
into four modes. He attempted to seek for the acceptable compromises between all and each mode
to define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of
this book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social sciencethrough the critical examination
of the theory and methodology in each approach. Some of the key questions are; whether the study
of social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action
or does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the
universal strategy to help social scientists in understanding the way of the world. The main theme
focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism. The
book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness
that the combination of approaches would be beneficial and worth pursuing.
Hollis starts off with the introduction of Structure and Action. The comparative framework is set
out by the two social scientists who employ two different principles; Karl Marx and John Stuart
Mills. Determinism is then introduced to further illuminate the difference between these two
theories. Hollis also provides readers with the fundamental feature of Explanation and
Understanding. The comparison represented through the

Education is so important in any given society. For this reason, it forms a major part of any

system is determined by existing policies. Factors which influence formulation of policies form the
subject of this discussion.

Therefore, in the 1950s and 1960s, demand and plans for investment in formal education by African
countries increased. Education was regarded to be a principal weapon in achieving economic
growth. To this end rapid quantitative expansion of the education system became the order of the
day in newly independent African countries.
Man power Shortages
After attaining independence, African countries were confronted with shortage of manpower in
various sectors of the economy. As a result of this scenario, they experienced economic stagnation.
Man power shortages were heavily felt in technical and managerial fields. Thus, education policies
in most African countries were directed towards resolving the man power shortages experienced.
This situation was evident from what obtained in Kenya. As Eshiwani (1993:26), observes at
independence in 1963, Kenya found herself with a high shortage of skilled manpower to run the
economy. In order to solve this problem, a commission was appointed to advise the government on
the formulation and interpretation of national educational policies. Therefore, it can be stated that
man power planning in newly independent countries of Africa gave a direction to the formulation
of education policies. Consequently, the governments of newly independent countries of Africa saw
it paramount to expand the education systems of their countries in

to pursue my dreams with renowned professors such as XXX in an advanced laboratory and with
people who share the same interests. At Princeton University, I can further explore the world of
chemical engineering through Freshmen seminars, once again working with my peers. I am
especially interested in the fall seminar Materials World at Mathey College, learning the technical
processing and applications of materials around us. In addition, the spring seminar Emerging Micro
and Nano Engineered Technologies at Rockefeller College can also give me the opportunity to
deepen my understanding of engineering.
On top of everything, Princeton offers me amazing research opportunities I cannot find anywhere
else. I intend to arrange summer employment at Princeton doing research with faculty members. I

The Use Of Film Techniques In Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is a gothic horror film directed by Tim Burton in 1999. It tells the story of when
Ichabod Crane is sent to the isolated town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the Headless
Horseman. The isolated gloomy setting for example, when Ichabod Crane enters the town, the film
techniques such as music and lighting such as when the Headless Horsemanappears combined with
characters that have supernatural powers including Catrina and Lady Van Tassel reinforces the idea
that Sleepy Hollowis a gothic horror film.
The town of Sleepy Hollow is isolated, dark and gloomy, it also has contains mostly gothic
architecture. This is to support the spine chilling atmosphere that Tim Burton has intended in the
film. This is to create a theme of fear and panic towards the viewer because the idea of gothic
horror is to create a suspenseful, isolated and dark environment in the movie. An example of this is
when Ichabod Crane arrives at sleepy hollow and is instantly greeted by a grave yard and a
gloomy, foggy and gothic looking town. The setting of the place in this scene is an excellent
example of how gothic horror differs from other styles of horror. ... Show more content on

The music being played as he is hacking at the tree is there to build suspense because the audience
is supposed to wonder What is behind the tree? Lighting is another technique used in Sleepy
Hollow. An example of lighting is when The Headless Horseman appears and lightning flashes, this
is to describe that something bad is about to happen to the audience and to also build suspense
because the sudden lightning is slightly more un nerving than just The Headless Horseman coming

Death Of Ivan Ilych Essay
According to Henry James, the way characters respond to certain situation is what makes them
intriguing (Wakana). Leo Tolstoy s story, The Death of Ivan Ilych is an example of just such a
story. Leo Tolstoy presents a character, Ivan Ilych and uses through out the story, in a way of
Ivan conveying the characters feelings to different situations (286 300). William Faulkner s
story, Barn Burning is another example of how the character is able to convey a message to the
reader. William Faulkner does this through the main character s thoughts and descriptions about
the other characters within the story (155 67). In Leo Tolstoy s story, The Death of Ivan Ilych
Ivan Ilych is dying and very much aware of that fact. He is in pain and in extreme anguish as he
deals with his situation (299). In Elisabeth Ross s book, On Death and Dying, she breaks down
the different stages of grief that someone dying may be going through. Ivan does to some extent,
appear to be going through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and
acceptance (Ross). Ivan goes through denial, pretends his illness is just something that will
eventually go away. Displays Anger, almost everyone he has contact with is subject to his anger.
As for depression, Ivan is in a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Ernest Green
Ernest Green
Throughout the American South, of many Negro s childhood, the system of segregation
determined the patterns of life. Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from
pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept.
On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this
system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with
assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the
1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. The unofficial leader of this band of students was
Ernest Green.

If one of the chosen students failed in their exams, the segregationists would declare integration a
failure. Of all the children from the Horace Mann High School and Dunbar Junior High School,
eighty signed up to attend Central High. After numerous interviews and exams, thirty two children
were considered eligible . This number was reduced to nine after the ramifications of black students
entering an all white high school prompted many of them to decline the transition into an arena
where mental and physical violence would be forced upon them daily. Understanding this it is clear
that Ernest Green is an extraordinary young man from the outset. He obviously possessed
remarkable intelligence and defended a strong belief in his intentions for relocating in his pivotal
senior year. All of the children that had reached this far into the selection would have sensed that
they were a part of an uncertain, yet historic situation, that would further Negro rights.
Ernest Green was well aware of the discrimination present amongst segregationists in Little Rock.
Since the age of eleven he had worked during his holidays and adapted well with his fellow white
workers. Working as a stockboy, cleaner and part time salesperson, Ernest was proficient in his
duties, until he tasted the sting of prejudice when customers complained about his position in the
store. Segregationists may not have accepted such a confident youth, but his mother

Career Research Paper Mechanics
Do you love fixing objects that people use daily? I chose mechanics because I have always
found it fun fixing cars that are not running right. It is just the feeling of fixing an object that a
person counts on every day. It feels good, in the sense that I used what I do best to help someone
else. This paper will explore the job description, requirements and salary expectations for
mechanics. First, being a mechanic takes focus. Occupational Outlook Handbook shares, one of
the first steps in a mechanic s handbook is to identify problems (OCO). Mechanics are not just
fixing cars all day. It is full of testing parts, using charts and building experience. A mechanic does
not just go into the shop and immediately know what the problem is. In fact,... Show more content

According to salary.com, some mechanics make as low as fifty nine thousand six hundred
thirty three dollars a year (Salary). While other mechanics can make up to sixty nine thousand
five hundred forty two dollars a year. You will need to be experienced before you can be
qualified. To become qualified, you will need one year of on the job experience. You also have
to complete one year of schooling to become qualified. There is not much shift differential.
Mechanics is a full time job, and you will have to often work overtime. Something to consider is
the injury rate. Mechanics has a higher injury rate than any other occupation. Another thing to
consider is the hazardous things you will encounter. Such as radiator fluid and oil. All of these
things can affect your salary for the good or for the bad. To sum up, it is all about the salary and
the things that can affect how you make it. In conclusion, this paper explored the job
description, requirements and salary expectation for mechanics. This career is a good fit for me
because I love to build and fix things. This is also a career where I can continue to grow throughout
the career. This is also what I have always wanted to do. I feel this career is a good fit for anyone
who wants to be able to grow in the workplace. So I am going to ask you again. Do you love fixing
things that people use

Phenolphthalein Lab
In this lab, we examined cubes of phenolphthalein submerged in Sodium hydroxide to see what the
effects would be. For the phenolphthalein, we used Agar cubes cut in three different sizes: small,
medium and large. The purpose of this Lab was to study the surface area to volume ratio in cells
and see how this ratio affects cell size. Phenolphthalein (C20H14O4) is one of the most common
acidbaseindicators used to determine the end point in acid base titrations. Sodium hydroxide
(NaOH) is an inorganic compound also known as lye. When exposed to each other, these two
compounds made the Agar cubes turn magenta (pink). Diffusion occurs along diffusion gradients
going from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration. So with time the NaOH
diffuses from the area of high concentration outside of the agar cube to areas of lower
concentration inside of the cube. Once the Agar cubes had been immersed in the NaOH for ten
minutes, we cut each cube in half. The depth of diffusion on each of the cubes was .3 cm. * The
rate of diffusion for all three agar cubes was .03... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cells need to metabolize nutrients and excrete waste in order to live. These processes need to
occur efficiently. On the agar cubes, the pink area represents the depth of diffusion and indicates
how far nutrients diffusing into the cell would travel. The percentage of pink area indicates how
efficient the diffusion is. The white area is bad because this means there was no diffusion into
that region. In theory, any cube with a white area will die since that portion of the cell would not
acquire the necessary nutrients. The small cube was the most efficient at gaining nutrients and
getting rid of waste as almost all of the cube had turned pink. In conclusion, the best cell size was
the small cube because it had the larges SA:Vol ratio and therefore, it had the most diffusion. Cells
need a large SA:Vol ratio to stay alive, that is why they are microscopic in

Social Work Photography Essay
The role of photography in the fight for social justice It always takes a single moment, a single
instant, and a single flash to capture a photograph that has the potential of letting the world
know how it looks like and the issues that it has to address (Collins, 2014). Most of the issues
that are experienced in the world like having long years of violence between war torn countries,
a decade of devastating famine can all be seen and captured using a single camera click
(Kennedy, 2016). After a photo has been shot, what follows is the process of publishing that can
be done in different media outlets like the magazines, newspapers, television, websites, and
brochures (Peres, 2007). In most cases, social injustices photographs tend to expose the injustices
that are experienced in different regions of the world and they may be ignored at some point
(Collins, 2014). The purpose of this paper will be to offers answers to a number of questions

towards this were the Children s Aid Society, the New York City s Department of Tenement
Housing and the Charity Organization Society. In hiring the photographers, these organizations
strongly believed that if they printed the images on different medias and pass the information to the
concerned bodies, then appropriate actions would be taken and the issues identified through the
photo would be solved appropriately (Peres,

My First Experience On Wordpress
During the course of this module I became familiar with a plethora of interfaces including
WordPress, ImgFlip, Giphy, Instagram, and Buzzfeed. With each interface, I had to adapt my own
knowledge and understanding to find success within it. Interfaces are rather diverse. These are the
programs in which people navigate through in the digital world. WordPress is an interface people
can utilize to develop a website revolving around their own interests and ideas. This all gets a little
more complicated when we throw Interface Literacy into the mix. Interface Literacy is the ability to
take any previous understanding and know how you may have to successfully develop that amongst
a multitude of other mediums.
During the class, we had to take what we learned about certain genres and interfaces and created
blog posts on WordPress to discuss those ideas. This was my first experience on this site.
Truthfully, I was intimidated by this interface. It took me about twenty minutes to figure out how
to discard that sample blog post they give to every new user. After that, it took another 20 minutes
to figure out how to post my first blog effectively. Don t even ask me how I figured out how to
change the theme of my site. I m still not entirely sure how it worked out. Despite all of these
mishaps, I struggled through and successfully posted the five required blogs for the module.
Interface literacy begins with what you already know, but it develops with the struggle through

Factors Militating Against the Implementation of Early...
Introduction The early childhood education is a field that has been rather slow to take up the
challenge of sustainability; it has a potentially significant role to play not because of underlying
concerns for children s welfare, but because of interest in children s environments and its attention
to social justice. Recently, a new dimension has been added to early childhoodeducationfor
sustainability (ECEfS) as an emerging national and international field, given a fillip with the launch
of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 2014) (UNESCO,
2005). Early Childhood Education for Sustainability (ECEfS) recognizes that young children have

In his book The Great Didactic (1657) he introduced what is now considered one of the first
descriptions of an educational system tailored for young children. In Comenius view learning
through the senses was the best way to teach during early childhood. He believed that before
reading about the object of study a child should first touch, see, taste or hear it. According to
Comenius, there should not be any gender or social class discrimination in education. He paid
specific attention to individual differences among children; he believed that a child s
development depended on his or her natural inclinations and that one and the same method would
not work with each child. Comenius system of education included four levels spanning from
infancy to adulthood. Each level outlined the educational experience needed by a person at each
stage of development. This idea was new and became the foundation of other scholars works on
the concept of early childhood education. Jean Jacques Rousseau believed in education according
to the ways of nature. He felt that education should be focused more on sensory and rational
experiences than on literary and linguistic ones. One of Rousseau s most famous quotes proclaims
that Our first teachers are our feet, our hands and our eyes. To substitute books for all these...is but
to teach us to use the reasons of others . In his view education for young children

Pancreas
Glucose is important to the cells of the human body, especially brain, nerve and muscles cells as
it is an energy source for cellular respiration. Blood glucose levels are controlled by the pancreas.
The pancreas is a glandular organ found in the upper abdominal cavity of the body, with both
endocrine and exocrine glands. An organ is a collection of tissues specialised to carry out a
particular function in the body. As an exocrine gland, the pancreas produces several digestive
enzymes through assigner cells that are the exocrine tissue such as: pancreatic proteases, pancreatic

Approximately 90% of the pancreas is exocrine. The remaining approximate 10% of the pancreas
acts as an endocrine gland that consists of around a million pancreatic islets called the islets of
Langerhans. Inside the islets are three main types of cell that detect the amount of glucose in the
blood: alpha, beta and delta cells. Situated mostly around the outside of the cell are alpha cells,
mainly towards the centre are beta cells, and scattered throughout in a limited number are delta
cells. The pancreas secretes a number of hormones that help with the stasis of blood glucose levels
in humans including antagonistic hormones insulin and glucagon, as well as somatostatin. A
hormone is a chemical messenger which is made in glands and carried around the body in the
bloodstream to coordinate many body processes. Blood glucose homeostasis regulation is a form of
negative feedback which is a self correction mechanism of the body. This means that if an individual
is hyperglycaemic, insulin output increases and glucagon output

What is the importance of a title? Every author carefully chooses a name for their story as a means
of interesting the reader and stating a theme or symbol that is used throughout the story. Especially
true in the case of Boxes by Raymond Carver, which tells the story of a son and his relationship
with his mother and girlfriend. The story is told from the son s point of view; however, the mother
and her inability to find contentment becomes the main focus. Unfortunately, the mother believes
that the happiness, which she lacks, can be found in possessions and surroundings. Although

Mexican Olympics Protest Of 1968 And The Protests
In formality to human existence, protesting has been a right for all humans to speak to their mind.
Some may say that the idea of revolting against injustices is embedded in our DNA; perhaps this
may be true, but regardless, protesting has been a sign for craving transformation. Dating back from
American Revolutionto Black Lives matter, protesthas been the only guaranteed freedom that gives
us a voice to alter our future. In retrospect, movements or protest such as Civil Rights Movement
quite literally changed the landscape of America for generations; speaking out towards the spiteful
racism that was so prevalent during those times leading to an importance in diversity. Similarly,
Countries around the world have conducted protest that has revolutionized the way of life or
inspired future generations. A clear distinction of this honor would be with Mexican Olympics
protest of 1968, the infamous protest that captured the world s attention. Public found themselves in
a unique position in viewing the Mexican youth stand up against the corruption of the Mexican
Government. This social unrest became a fundamental part of modern Mexican culture that has

Atomic Theory And The Study Of Matter
Atomic Theory and the Study of Matter Matter is anything made up of atoms and molecules and
the study of these things called atoms dates back to the time of Ancient Greece to the present. The
information about atoms known today is certainly much greater than what was known centuries
ago. First, there was only hypotheses on this idea that everything in the world is made up of tiny,
unseeable particles. As technology advanced, these hypotheses were tested, critiqued, modified, and
built upon. A mass of knowledge is known regarding atoms, thanks to the research of numerous
chemists and physicists. The atomic theory is the building block to the study of matter just as the
atomis the building block to all matter. Around 400 BCE was when the Greek philosopher
Democritus, alone with his teacher Leucippus, the idea of the atom was born (the word atom
comes from the Greek word atomos or atomon meaning that which cannot be split ). This was a
completely new concept, and Democritus s theory stated that atoms were indestructible and
homogenous, and different states of matter were made up of differently shaped atoms: solids had
sharp and pointy atoms and liquids had large round atoms. Later these ideas would be proved
inaccurate, however, this was the beginning of the discovery of the atom even though the people of
this time had no instruments capable of testing the theory. It was not until centuries later that the
atomic theory was truly looked at again. In 1803 an English

  • 3. Comparing Clueless and Emma Essay CLUELESS VS. EMMA Adaptations of Jane Austen s, Emma, are usually period pieces diligent in capturing and replicating the manners, dress, language and values of the original text. Clueless, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, deviates drastically from the norm, as the film is not a period piece. While Emmais set in the early nineteenth century in the country village of Highbury, sixteen miles out of London, England, Clueless is set in Bronson Alcott High School almost two hundred years later, in the late twentieth century. Despite the significantly different geographical and historical setting and the diverse social values, lifestyles, and issues than those depicted in Emma, Amy Heckerlings high school setting retains and is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Highbury s residents show much regard for decorum, gossip is an inherent characteristic in both Highbury (xvi) and Bronson Alcott High School as means of spreading news, knowledge, and in criticizing. In Highbury everyone knows everyone else s affairs, even that the Perrys are speculating about buying a carriage. When Frank goes all the way to London for a haircut he is considered a fop . The prevalence of gossip is also evident in the everyday life of Bronson Alcott, Cher is able to give specific information about Christian s parents joint custody although she has not met him. Later Cher gossips about the reputations of the various social groups sitting around the school. Both the novel Emma and the film Clueless reflect the societies of their times and use the acceptable forms of language for their settings. In Emma the characters use the expected for formal language in their direct and indirect speeches. Harriett addresses her friend as Dear Miss Woodhouse, and Mrs. Elton shocks everyone saying Jane and Knight without appropriate titles. In Clueless however, Cher, her father and Josh speak in informal everyday language most of the other speech is in slang, whatever or referring to attractive guys as a Baldwin and pretty girls as a Betty. • 4. A Sociological Perspective On Homelessness Currently, the rates of homelessness in America continue to drastically increase. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (2012) depicted how many people are homeless in a single night in America. The findings revealed that there were approximately 633,782 people who are homeless in America or 20 out of every 10,000. Approximately 394,379 are single individuals and 239,403 are people in families with 77,157 homeless families in a single night, and approximately 162, 246 are children. Veterans are more likely to be homeless than those who are non veterans, approximately 29 out of every 10,000 veterans are homeless. Unfortunately, 38 percent of those who are homeless are unsheltered, either living on the streets or in places that are not suitable for human inhabitation. Most states account of for less than 1% of homeless population, whereas Texas contains approximately 5.4% of America s homeless population. In San Antonio, there are approximately 2,981 people who are homeless each day, and 1,243 are unsheltered. Through a sociological perspective, the social problems of homelessness can be analyzed through the concept of sociological imagination, the comparison of the person blame approach and the system blame approach, and through the analysis of one s own community s effort in helping those who are homeless. Firstly, C. Wright Mills concept of sociological imagination is stimulated by a willingness to view the social worlds from the perspective of others ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whatever our motivations, most of us have ideals we are willing to stand up for and do something about. I care for a great many things; the well being of dogs (animals in general) and our environment are amongst the most important to me. Let us focus on the volunteer opportunities available at Orange County Animal Services as compared to those offered locally by a non partisan group called the Citizen s Climate Lobby. Although both are worthy causes, saving dogs and protecting the environment differ in the skill set, the varying levels of commitment, and the scope of impact involved. One must... Education and awareness can go a long way to solving most problems and dog rescue is no exception. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 7.6 million companion animals are admitted into shelters in the United States every year; 3.9 million are dogs, of which 1.2 million are euthanized and only 1.4 million are adopted (the numbers for cats are very similar). That works out to nearly a 35% adoption rate, 41% rate of euthanization, and 26% are strays returned to their homes. Two times the number of dogs come into shelters as strays as opposed to being surrendered by their owners. There are several reasons people surrender their dogs; per the American Humane Association, 29% are surrendered because people live in or move to homes that do not allow pets, while reasons such as a lack of adequate time to care for the animal, divorce and death, and behavior issues make up 10% apiece (with various other issues occupying the remainder). There are 70 80 million dogs owned in the United States which works out to around 37 47% of households; 28% of dogs come from breeders while 29% are adopted from shelters and most of those are through friends and acquaintances. Per the American Veterinary Medicine Association roughly 40% of pet owners find their pets by referrals from various sources. Around 13,600 independent animal shelters operate nationwide employing such monikers as humane society and SPCA, but those organizations are not affiliated with the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. NBA games are by far the most interesting professional sports event to attend. It s amazing to see the gigantic men in real life instead of on your television screen. You make amazing memories with the people you go with because the games are extremely fun. All you need for a great NBA game is a skillful team, lively fans, and some delicious, reasonably priced food. Is that too hard to ask for? Apparently, for some teams, it is. Let s face it, if your home team is terrible, like the Knicks and the Nets are, you go to the games just to see the hyped up teams and get cheaper tickets closer to the court. This season, the Knicks are in fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12 wins and nine losses, which is much better than last year s record. It isn t worth seeing a game there if you have already been to one because the only thing they are consistent at is choking in the fourth quarter. • 7. Pawnee Tribe Tribe Essay There are many Plains indians tribes, all unique in their own ways. One of the most unique tribes that stand out among the rest is the Pawnee tribe. The Pawnee tribe is really known as the Pawnee tribe of Oklahoma. The Pawnee are originally from Kansas and Nebraska but they were forced to move from these states and had to be moved onto a reservation in Oklahoma. They were moved onto this reservation in Oklahoma in the 1800 s, and most of the tribehave been in Oklahoma ever since. On their reservation, they have many ways that they are organized unlike other Plains Indian tribes. The Pawneehave their own police, laws, government, and their own public services. Although it may seem, that since they have all these things, it makes them a small country inside of a country, the people of the Pawnee tribe are still U.S. Citizens and therefore have to follow American laws. Even though the Pawnee tribe is originally from the states of Nebraska and Kansas, they are federally recognized as being from Oklahoma. The Pawnee group of people are unique in many different ways. The men, women, and children all have different jobs than each other. The men were usually the hunters and went to war to protect their family only when needed. The men would take their children, usually boys, on hunting and fishing trips. The women of the tribe would cook, take care of the children while the father was out, and they were the farmers as well. The children of the tribe would go to school, help ... The organism that we are going to be focusing on is the dragonfly. The dragonfly has been around for 300 million years and has manage to stay alive and thrive in its environments. Back then an ancestor of dragonflies roamed the planet, its name was Meganeura. Meganeura is a genus of extinct insects from approximately 300 million years ago, they are related to modern day dragonflies. In this group one member known as M. permiana was first described be researchers in Kansas in 1937 as having a wingspan of over 2 feet or 0.6 meters long. It is still considered one of the largest insects ever to be alive on this planet. First being 560 Yates Street s Oriental Building, where I was reminded of a New York Citystyle apartment which was short, made of rustic red brick, displaying rounded window followed by having that tinted brown giving it that old and dirty look. Then there was a sudden switch as I came across 1675 Douglas Street s Terasen Gas Building. The Terasen Gas building was very generic and modern office looking building. This type of building was one where if you came across a photo of it, you wouldn t be able to pin point where it came from, meaning it could be anywhere in the world. The last and top favourite building that struck out to me was Centennial Square s City Hall building. • 10. Pride And Prejudice By Jane Darcy Essay When pride encounters prejudice. The novel Pride and Prejudice revolve around two characters Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from different socioeconomic class and their impression of each other. As the title indicates, one character is prideful and the other prejudice. As the protagonist of the novel, Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice feelings in to find happiness. But the path towards finding romantic happiness involved two phase in the novel: the first phase involved Elizabeth finding Mr. Darcy to be abhorrent in the beginning and the second phase is involved her overcoming her misconception of Mr. Darcy. The shift in Elizabeth perception of Mr. Darcy leads to her falling in lovewith Mr. Darcy. The first impression is the hardest impression to overcome. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy did not have a very smooth first interaction. Because of his social status, Mr. Darcy comes across as very pride during his first interaction with Elizabeth. Mr. Bingly (Mr. Darsy s friend) suggests that Mr. Darcy dances with Elizabeth at a social event a ball. She [Elizabeth] is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me; I [Mr. Darcy] in no humour to present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. • 11. Trunk Flexion We found that the muscle strength of trunk flexion showed significant differences within group and between groups. The results of the trunk back extension showed significant differences within group. Our result of increased trunk strength was similar to previous study results. Within group difference of muscleactivation was higher in the BLSE group than in the HLSE group. This implies that the EO and RA were activated as the agonist of trunk flexion, and that muscle hypertrophy can increase strength of trunk flexion when activated by the EO and RA. One study showed EO activated approximately 32% of MVIC by bracing and 12% of MVIC by hollowing (Grenier McGill, 2007). The % EMG max values in RA was 18% in the bracing strategy, while the RA value was approximately 6% in the hollowing strategy(Maeo et al., 2013). Thus, we suggest that trunk flexion strength would be increased by muscle hypertrophy if the bracing strategy is applied in side plank exercise and prone plank exercises, which activate EO and RA, for 12 weeks. • 19. The Decline Of Human Cultural Diversity Languages are being rapidly lost, at a rate of extinction. Serious concerns over the impending loss of human cultural diversity have caused many organizations to actively start engaging in the upkeep of languages. Early studies have identified areas with a high number of endangered languages, and preformed investigations. What they came across was the population size of the culture, and how vast of an area the language is spoken in, are key factors to the decline of languages. Other factors include; mass genocide, evolution, economics growth or decline, religion, a change in culture can be a partial cause for the endangerment or extinction of a language. The main factor is usually when a more powerful and pronounced language over takes the smaller subdivision languages, somewhat related to what the Lingua franca. An example of this would be in Canada. In parts of Canada such as Quebec the primary language is French, but in other many places in Canada, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Montreal, the primary language is English, so French is become less common throughout the country. The more powerful and know language allows for less language barriers, and allows easier communication. So what does it mean for a language to become endangered? It means extinction may be in the near future. Only a few people still speak the language and when they become deceased the language will soon cease to exist, unless they preserve documents or it continues to get passed on. How many languages ... • 22. Tiananmen Incident elitism (Lui 2000, 141). Chronologically speaking, the Tiananmen incident began as of April 15, 1989, when Hu Yaobang died. For example, posters appeared at Beijing University on April 15, mourning Hu as a fallen hero (Lin 1992, 3). Hu s death is therefore, seen as a catalyst of the student protests since many students supported his stand against corruption and party elitism. They saw him as the their only non corrupt and democratic official; but more importantly, their call for democracy and freedom (Chiu 1991, 332). On April 16, 1989, many students gathered to attack the government, which led to the following democratic demands on April 17; out of the seven stated a few will be listed: (1) a fair assessment of Hu s demonstrations; (2) complete... In a similar sense, in 1989, Hu s death gave the demonstrators another reason to comemorate his death and again call for democratic reforms. In addition, a number of participants in the Democracy Wall movement of 1978 and 1976 demonstration in Tiananmen Square were university faculty members in 1989, and many of them, most notably Feng Lizhi, played a role in framing the issues publicly and signaling students to participate in the movement against corrupt governments (Mason and Clements 2002, 173). Andrew Nathans (1990) argued that by 1989, what had started as congeries of small, isolated, clandestine groups, had grown step by step through the Tiananmen Square Incident of 1976, the Democracy Wall movement of 1978 79 etc. into a national force in 1989, that had the participation or sympathy of almost all residents in China against the Chinese government ... Thanks to the ten teaching practices I have had lots of hours to practice my teaching. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about teaching, to feeling like I can teach any subject in English at ease. I understand what to do, and what not to do in a classroom setting. My observers helped me improve my teachingfrom adequate to a professional standard. What is a good teacher? A good teacher is one that has a passion for teaching. A good teacher is one that is takes pleasure in seeing their students comprehend their lessons. Being able to connect with your students is an important part of being a teacher. If you can t connect with your students, you cannot teach them properly. Another element to being a good teacher is making sure that no student feels left out. A good teacher will utilize every student to make sure that everyone understands the objective and is learning properly. Strengths and Weaknesses: One of my strengths as a teacher is being able to get along well with the students. In none of my classes did I have a class where I did not vibe well with one of the students. I always try my best to get every student to participate. When I see a student struggling with the lesson I utilize other students to explain to them what is going on. My weakness would most likely be my pacing. On multiple occasions I failed to finish my entire lesson plan, and on some occasions, I finished my lesson plan too fast. I would like to be able to better pace my lesson plans so that I don t feel as rushed to finish, or anxious I will finish early. Teaching Approaches: I find the direct method to be the best method in teaching English. In the Direct Method, language is taught inductively and the target language is used exclusively. (ITTO, Page 119) For teaching grammar, I believe teaching inductively cements the grammar structure into the student s minds. It uses the students own thinking ability to figure out the grammar structure of a sentence. This allows students to better understand what they are being taught. It also makes it easier for students to better use the grammar when they are making their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ipads in the Primary Classroom The introduction of the iPad/Tablet in Schools In 2010, apple introduced it s newest technology, the iPad, which promised to bring mobile technology into every home and classroom. With the introduction of the iPad comes new considerations for learning and pedagogy. (Sheppard, 2011) McKenna (2012) suggests that the internet is as common a school fixture as lockers and library books. Additionally schoolwork is one of the most common activities performed online. One of the motivators for schools to adopt iPads was the ability to use interactive textbooks. The portability of the iPad made it not only easier to carry than several text books, but easier to use. The other motivator to iPads and digital textbooks is that the interactive features and capabilities. Digital textbooks can be updated to contain the most current information. Pedagogical shift VS. Technology Implementation An appropriate pedagogical framework is necessary to incorporate iPads into the classroom (McKenna, 3, 2012) It is important that educators are aware of the difference between technology integration which involves new literacies and curriculum integration. Newman (2013) notes (as cited in Hutchinson, Beschorner, Schmidt Crawford, 2012) that research indicates that much of the technology used in literacy classroom is in the form of technology integration as opposed to curriculum integration. • 28. The True Nature Of Cheerleading Essay As human beings, it is natural to judge people who are different than ourselves. Most often these judgements are based off of common beliefs, or stereotypes. Stereotypes apply to every group, from the slow moving elderly to lively cheerleaders. Usually these beliefs do not describe every person in a group, but they all receive the same labels. Cheerleaders make up one group that is commonly stereotyped, but many people don t know the true nature of cheerleading. Countless stereotypes that I have about cheerleaders have been ingrained into my mind by the media, and from personal experience. From what I had observed in high school, cheerleaders are the popular girls with plenty of friends. Not being associated with a cheerleader meant that you weren t on the map. Promiscuity was also an extremely prominent stereotype in high school, which had always shocked me since the cheerleaders seemed like a nasty group of girls. Cheerleaders also have a reputation of being air headed or simply not intelligent. As an outsider, they did not give me the impression of being book smart, especially at my high school. Another stereotype that I have is that cheerleaders aren t entirely athletic. Yes, cheerleading is a sport. Yes, it can be dangerous and it does take work. However, cheering doesn t look like it requires the same level of effort and intensity as multiple other sports. The causes of the reformation will be analyzed from two different perspectives: Germany s causes and Europe s causes. The results of reformation will be examined. Major contributors such as Martin Luther and John Calvin s perspectives and contributions will also be analyzed and the impact they had during their time period. People in Europe during the early 16th century faced a lot personal grievances with the church. This provoked a reformation which is known as the Protestant reformation. The reformation began in 1517, and ended in 1648. The ideas of people such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Henry VIII caught several peoples eye because of this. They provided different views, and ideas that many never thought about. Europe and Germany had different reasons for the reformation, and because of this had different outcomes. Martin Luther was a german university professor and a priest who challenged some of the church s doctrines. Mr. Luther was concerned with sin and penance for those sins; he challenged the idea of buying indulgences, which were believed to bring forgiveness for all sins. He attempted to seek for the acceptable compromises between all and each mode to define a better way of understanding the social world. Hollis clearly states that the key task of this book is to reflect on the underlying philosophy of social sciencethrough the critical examination of the theory and methodology in each approach. Some of the key questions are; whether the study of social science can use the same method as in natural science, does structure determine an action or does action determines structure in the process of social changes, and is there such a thing as the universal strategy to help social scientists in understanding the way of the world. The main theme focuses on Explanation and Understanding with the minor theme of Holism and Individualism. The book initially gives the impression that each social study approach has its strength and weakness that the combination of approaches would be beneficial and worth pursuing. Hollis starts off with the introduction of Structure and Action. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, in the 1950s and 1960s, demand and plans for investment in formal education by African countries increased. Education was regarded to be a principal weapon in achieving economic growth. To this end rapid quantitative expansion of the education system became the order of the day in newly independent African countries. Man power Shortages After attaining independence, African countries were confronted with shortage of manpower in various sectors of the economy. As a result of this scenario, they experienced economic stagnation. Man power shortages were heavily felt in technical and managerial fields. Thus, education policies in most African countries were directed towards resolving the man power shortages experienced. This situation was evident from what obtained in Kenya. As Eshiwani (1993:26), observes at independence in 1963, Kenya found herself with a high shortage of skilled manpower to run the economy. The isolated gloomy setting for example, when Ichabod Crane enters the town, the film techniques such as music and lighting such as when the Headless Horsemanappears combined with characters that have supernatural powers including Catrina and Lady Van Tassel reinforces the idea that Sleepy Hollowis a gothic horror film. The town of Sleepy Hollow is isolated, dark and gloomy, it also has contains mostly gothic architecture. This is to support the spine chilling atmosphere that Tim Burton has intended in the film. This is to create a theme of fear and panic towards the viewer because the idea of gothic horror is to create a suspenseful, isolated and dark environment in the movie. Leo Tolstoy s story, The Death of Ivan Ilych is an example of just such a story. Leo Tolstoy presents a character, Ivan Ilych and uses through out the story, in a way of Ivan conveying the characters feelings to different situations (286 300). William Faulkner s story, Barn Burning is another example of how the character is able to convey a message to the reader. William Faulkner does this through the main character s thoughts and descriptions about the other characters within the story (155 67). In Leo Tolstoy s story, The Death of Ivan Ilych Ivan Ilych is dying and very much aware of that fact. He is in pain and in extreme anguish as he deals with his situation (299). Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept. On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the 1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. If one of the chosen students failed in their exams, the segregationists would declare integration a failure. Of all the children from the Horace Mann High School and Dunbar Junior High School, eighty signed up to attend Central High. After numerous interviews and exams, thirty two children were considered eligible . This number was reduced to nine after the ramifications of black students entering an all white high school prompted many of them to decline the transition into an arena where mental and physical violence would be forced upon them daily. Understanding this it is clear that Ernest Green is an extraordinary young man from the outset. He obviously possessed remarkable intelligence and defended a strong belief in his intentions for relocating in his pivotal senior year. All of the children that had reached this far into the selection would have sensed that they were a part of an uncertain, yet historic situation, that would further Negro rights. Ernest Green was well aware of the discrimination present amongst segregationists in Little Rock. Since the age of eleven he had worked during his holidays and adapted well with his fellow white workers. For the phenolphthalein, we used Agar cubes cut in three different sizes: small, medium and large. The purpose of this Lab was to study the surface area to volume ratio in cells and see how this ratio affects cell size. Phenolphthalein (C20H14O4) is one of the most common acidbaseindicators used to determine the end point in acid base titrations. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is an inorganic compound also known as lye. When exposed to each other, these two compounds made the Agar cubes turn magenta (pink). Diffusion occurs along diffusion gradients going from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration. So with time the NaOH diffuses from the area of high concentration outside of the agar cube to areas of lower concentration inside of the cube. Once the Agar cubes had been immersed in the NaOH for ten minutes, we cut each cube in half. The depth of diffusion on each of the cubes was .3 cm. * The rate of diffusion for all three agar cubes was .03... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the agar cubes, the pink area represents the depth of diffusion and indicates how far nutrients diffusing into the cell would travel. The percentage of pink area indicates how efficient the diffusion is. The white area is bad because this means there was no diffusion into that region. In theory, any cube with a white area will die since that portion of the cell would not acquire the necessary nutrients. The small cube was the most efficient at gaining nutrients and getting rid of waste as almost all of the cube had turned pink. In conclusion, the best cell size was the small cube because it had the larges SA:Vol ratio and therefore, it had the most diffusion. With each interface, I had to adapt my own knowledge and understanding to find success within it. Interfaces are rather diverse. These are the programs in which people navigate through in the digital world. WordPress is an interface people can utilize to develop a website revolving around their own interests and ideas. This all gets a little more complicated when we throw Interface Literacy into the mix. Interface Literacy is the ability to take any previous understanding and know how you may have to successfully develop that amongst a multitude of other mediums. During the class, we had to take what we learned about certain genres and interfaces and created blog posts on WordPress to discuss those ideas. This was my first experience on this site. Truthfully, I was intimidated by this interface. It took me about twenty minutes to figure out how to discard that sample blog post they give to every new user. In his book The Great Didactic (1657) he introduced what is now considered one of the first descriptions of an educational system tailored for young children. In Comenius view learning through the senses was the best way to teach during early childhood. He believed that before reading about the object of study a child should first touch, see, taste or hear it. According to Comenius, there should not be any gender or social class discrimination in education. He paid specific attention to individual differences among children; he believed that a child s development depended on his or her natural inclinations and that one and the same method would not work with each child. Comenius system of education included four levels spanning from infancy to adulthood. Each level outlined the educational experience needed by a person at each stage of development. This idea was new and became the foundation of other scholars works on the concept of early childhood education. Jean Jacques Rousseau believed in education according to the ways of nature. • 56. Atomic Theory And The Study Of Matter Atomic Theory and the Study of Matter Matter is anything made up of atoms and molecules and the study of these things called atoms dates back to the time of Ancient Greece to the present. The information about atoms known today is certainly much greater than what was known centuries ago. First, there was only hypotheses on this idea that everything in the world is made up of tiny, unseeable particles. As technology advanced, these hypotheses were tested, critiqued, modified, and built upon. A mass of knowledge is known regarding atoms, thanks to the research of numerous chemists and physicists. The atomic theory is the building block to the study of matter just as the atomis the building block to all matter. Around 400 BCE was when the Greek philosopher Democritus, alone with his teacher Leucippus, the idea of the atom was born (the word atom comes from the Greek word atomos or atomon meaning that which cannot be split ). This was a completely new concept, and Democritus s theory stated that atoms were indestructible and homogenous, and different states of matter were made up of differently shaped atoms: solids had sharp and pointy atoms and liquids had large round atoms. Later these ideas would be proved inaccurate, however, this was the beginning of the discovery of the atom even though the people of this time had no instruments capable of testing the theory. It was not until centuries later that the atomic theory was truly looked at again. In 1803 an English ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
