Metamorphosis Analysis
Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis is about the dehumanization of a man named Gregor, when he
wastes his life monotonously repeating the same task every day to support his uncaring family. The
lack of purpose in his life is an example of absurdist fiction, a genre of fictional narrative that uses
satire and irrationality to explore the human experience of meaninglessness. Furthermore, The
Metamorphosisuses aspects of magical realism, such as transformation of common, distortion of
time and loss of identity, featured in other magical realism works such as Axolotl and The
Handsomest Drowned Man in the World . Kafka s The Metamorphosis has both absurdist fiction
and magical realism traits, therefore, should not only be classified as... Show more content on

His dad was an abusive father and businessman, Kafka s siblings represented Gregor s sister and
his mother was the only who cared and supported him. Satire and the irrationality of life are key
aspects of The Metamorphosis and are what makes it absurdist fiction.
Kafka utilizes distortion of time, an element of magical realism in The Metamorphosis to show
how Gregor is losing touch with humanity, similar to how Julio Cortazar uses it in Axolotl .
Distortion of time shows the reader that the way Gregor lives in his world is different from the
way we live ours, Magical realism...tells its stories from the perspective of people who live in our
world and experience a different reality from the one we call objective (Rogers 1). Time is absent
in The Metamorphosis , Often he just lay there the long nights without sleeping at all, scrabbling
for hours on the leather. (112) this is significant because it shows how Gregor after turning into an
insect, experiences reality differently. Before turning into an insect, Gregor s only purpose in life
was to support his family and did not need to keep track on time. After his transformation, because
he could not support his family anymore, he lost his purpose in life; without being able to use his
time to support his family, he could only sit around and rot. Kafka adjusts the flow of time to show
the reader the perspective of a man with no purpose. Axolotl is similar in this fashion, being in the

Design And Analysis Of Control System Structures For...
This thesis deals with the design and analysis of control system structures for electric drives
equipped with permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) in automotive application. With
the increasing popularity of multi level inverters, the room for improvement of the performance of
voltage source inverters has continuously been tested for various applications. The rapid
development of high switching frequency power electronics in the past decade leads towards wider
application of voltage source inverters in AC power generation. Therefore, this prompts the need
for a modulation technique with less total harmonic distortion, fewer switching losses, and wider
linear modulation range. The present thesis highlights the comparison of the conventional two level
inverter and the three level diode clamped inverters for the application in automotive industry. The
thesis highlights the DC link balancing control which is the most commonly faced problem in case
of a three level diode clamped inverter, with no additional circuit. Modifications of the modulation
techniques for the realization of the DC link balancing control have been proposed. Comparison of
the total harmonic distortion of the line to line voltages at the outputs of the two and three level
inverters has been presented for PWM, SVPWM CB SVPWM techniques. The thesis also deals
with the control of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive using Field Oriented Control
technique. A PMSM drive system based on Field

Suicide in Bartleby and Life in the Iron Mills Essay
Suicide in Bartleby and Life in the Iron Mills
Life in the Iron Mills and Bartleby are centered on characters who are alienated laborers, looking
for means through which they cannot be deprived of their humanity. Hugh Wolfe and Bartleby are
both workers who have been victimized by the capitalistic system. As Karl Marx explains, the
capitalistic system exploits the laborer and thus robs the laborer of his humanity through alienating
the laborer. Both Wolfeand Bartleby become victims of the system, for they are not only alienated
and dehumanized. But in their struggle against the system, they take their own lives. Their suicides
are representative of how far alienation reached into the lives of Bartleby and Wolfe and how far ...

I should have been quite regulated with his application, had he been cheerfully industrious. But he

because he noticed the machine like style of Bartleby s. Bartleby s lack of human qualities
bothered the narrator, as he did later become concerned about Bartleby s condition and began to
inquire of his past.
It is evident that the alienation process has already begun to take hold on Bartleby, long before
he took the scrivener position. He is doing work for which he is being paid for and refuses to do
any favors. He knows that his labor is for sale and that he will do only what the lawyer s money
buys, and nothing more. Second, Bartleby makes it a point to explain that he would prefer not to
do something, inserting the fact that he is the one deciding. Through his disobedience and his
repeating the phrase I would prefer not to Bartleby was struggling to preserve his humanity.
Bartleby refused to allow the lawyer to exploit his labor and his energy. The manner in which he
was trying so hard to preserve his autonomy shows how he wished not to be further alienated from
the work process, for he wanted control over exactly what task he did or did not perform.
Later in the book we find Bartleby taking up residence at the office where he worked. When
Bartleby s employer approached him about the fact that he was living in the office and asked him

Implementing Educational Applications And Software Into...
Apple has evolved over the years and has begun implementing educational applications and
software into their products and digital store. This was done to provide an efficient and effective
way to bring the student and teacher together by use of technology. Apple has thus, created and
implemented a program called, iTunesUniversity. This provides a space, via the iPad, where
students can converse, learn, develop, and write with the teachers help or under the educator s
supervision. This is an invaluable tool that can be utilized in the classroom to aid in lesson
planning and improve learning. While you can use this specific application via a Mac or PC, the
benefit is obvious and can be accessed easily via a tablet. The reason this is so... Show more content

The use of iPads and its applications will allow children and teens to grow as a student and
participate with the entire class. In fact, Huffington Post found that, Technology has proven to
accelerate struggling students close the learning gap between those at the back of the class and the
A students. In fact, 78 percent of Kindergarten through Middle School teachers agree that
technology has had a positive impact on their classroom and that s just the start (Hendricks,
2013). This highlights the fact that students already are and will continue to excel in the
classroom by the use of modern technology; i.e. the iPad. Also, companies around the world have
updated the their way of doing business actions like budgeting, presentations, purchases, record
keeping, etc. by applying modern technology. Allowing students to be exposed to modern
technology at an early age will only benefit them in their future career paths. iPads in the
classroom has spread across the country like wild fire. More than 20 Chicago schools will test
iPads in the classroom this year, thanks to a mini grant offered by CPS. Two hundred schools
applied for the grants, valued at more than $20,000. Each grant includes 32 iPads, 1 MacBook Pro
for syncing purposes, $200 in iTunes credit for applications and a storage cart for the hardware.

The Olympic Games Or A Party
The Olympic Games or a Party The Olympics are a special spectacle for everyone, and for sixteen
days every two years we are witness to the best athletes in the world. Only for the rare few the
dream to compete are a reality, but for the billions of other people, this is an event of pride and
passion for their home country. The continuous cycle of new cities and different countries
hosting the games brings out great nationalism. The challenge to get a bid to host the Olympics
has always been difficult but as the cost of the games rises the number of cities vying for it is
decreasing. The Olympics are the biggest sporting event in the world, and they are one of the
most well known events across the world. Being host to an event like this brings great revenue into
a country s economy through tourism and the need for jobs and construction. But the Olympics are
becoming very costly and countries are beginning to wonder if its worth it to host the party when
they know they will not earn all the money back. The Olympics ruin economies and the games tend
to hurt countries more than help them. The games are played every two years alternating between
the summer and winter Olympics. It roughly plays host to about 90 countries all vying for one
goal, the gold. The Olympics originated in ancient Greece with the first ever recorded games
occurring in 776 B.C. For the first thirteen Olympics only one event occurred, but now the number
has risen to three hundred events which puts great

Child Sexual And Sexual Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
Why does child sexual abuse happen and what are the effects of it? Child sexual abuse is sexual
contact with a child that occurs as a result of force or in a relationship where it is exploited
because of an age difference or caretaking responsibility (Finkelhor). Roughly 1.8 million children
have been sexually victimized in the United States (NSOPW). Although there is no proof that
racial or socioeconomic groups is a factor in a predators choosing, studies show that children who
have parent complications or stepparents in their life are at a higher risk of experiencing sexual
abuse, granted it could happen to anyone. Vulnerability is extremely present in ages between nine
and twelve, but approximately a quarter of incidents take place before the child is eight years old
(Finkelhor). However, sexual assault is severely under reported with about only 32% of incidents
on record.
Research shows that when an abuser is going to claim their victim they usually have an outlined
strategy of their attack. They are precise and they take their time. Abusers are commonly familiar
with their victim and already have gained their trust. Unfortunately, abusers are generally related to
the child, or they spend generous amounts of time with them as a coach, caregiver, teacher, or even
a significant other to the child s parent. Abusers tend to be males, and studies involving incarcerated
abusers have confirmed that they abuse because of their unusual needs for

Analysis Of Safe Is In The Brain Of The Beholder
Amidst all of the tumultuous violence and controversy that prevalent in today s society, it is no
wonder individuals turn to their comfort zones at the end of a hectic day. Most people students
and workforce members alike feel it necessary to hole up in their safe space to escape and
rejuvenate so that they can put their best foot forward the next day. Lee Burdette Williams
explores this concept of safe spaces through a variety of points in her article Safe is in the Brain of
the Beholder . In opposition to the Dean of the University of Chicago, she encourages people to
look past their own beliefs, and attempt to understand the needs of others, whatever they may be.
Throughout her article, Williams employs common sense tactics as well... Show more content on

Throughout Williams s article, she uses logos in multiple contexts to support her main
arguments. One area readers encounter logical appeals is when the author refers to a point made
by theorists William Cross, Robert Kegan, and Marcia Magolda. Each provide support for the
idea that growth eventually occurs in all individuals. However, they also maintain that this growth
does not happen at the same time for everyone. Individuals grow with time, increased maturity,
and life experience. Most importantly, students grow at their own pace. To extend this point, the
theorists emphasize that with time, individuals learn to separate their beliefs from who they
actually are. By doing so, they are able to recognize that the opinions of others are not definitive
of who they are, resulting in an increased tolerance for and ability to understand others. In the
words of Williams (2016), We move from being our relationships to having our relationships, from
being our beliefs to having our beliefs, from being our identities to having our identities. This
statement is crucial, because although opinions and beliefs are a part of our identity, they do not
make up our entire being. Additionally, science and theory are used in an attempt to appeal to
readers logically when Williams references proven neurological fact that

Henry Thoreau on Civil Disobedience
The Statue of Liberty is an American symbol of justice and freedom from oppression, yet in Henry
Thoreau s opinion, the U.S. government is completely antithetical. In Thoreau s essay on civil
disobedience, he introduces and accepts the motto, That government is best which governs not at
all. In his eyes, the government does more harm than good for its people. Underneath his seemingly
main idea, Thoreau implies an overall antithesis where he defines who, in his eyes, is allowed to be
disobedient. In order to advance this main idea and reinforce this mottos throughout the essay,
Thoreau uses metaphors and juxtaposition to strengthen this subtle antithesis found throughout the
essay. In his essay, Thoreau uses the extended metaphor of the government as machine to emphasize
how government dehumanizes its citizens. He relates the government to a machine in that it is
made up of many parts which all must work together for the machine to be successful. If something
is broken, one can fix the machine in order to better suit his/her needs. Thoreau introduces this
metaphor when he states, men serve the state not as men mainly, but as machines, with their
bodies. He begins with the first, military men who serve with their bodies. These men, in most
cases, have no free exercise of moral sense serving under the state. Without the use of their moral
sense or conscience, Thoreau comes to the conclusion that they can be replaced by objects such as
wood and stones and therefore, have

Attachment In Harry Harlow s Experiments
Do humans think of their parents as warm and comfortable when they look at them? Harry
Harlow s experiment with infant monkeys put this idea to the test to see if humans do rely on the
importance of warm contact (king,2017), or if it is simply the emotion of loving someone. Many
of the existing theories of love centered on the idea that the earliest attachment between a mother
and child was merely a means for the child to obtain food, relieve thirst, and avoid pain
(Cherry,2017). This experiment all comes back to attachment, which is when someone or
something will start developing a bonding connection with their caregiver. Harlow s experiments
correlate with my past experiences whereby I formed a beneficial attachment by warmth, which is
the feeling of being safe and loved. Harlow s experiment started when the monkeys were separated
at birth from their mother (Green, N.D.). Therefore, the monkeys had no idea who their actual
mother was when the experiment was starting. The monkeys were put in separate cages and half of
them were put with a cold wire mother and the other was a warm, fuzzy cloth mother (King,2017).
The infantmonkeys were being fed by either the cold wire or the fuzzy cloth artificial mothers.

education has always been important and we have always allowed and pushed every citizen to get

Through research, many countries around the world give their citizens options for affordable
secondary education. For example, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, and France are just some of the
countries with free or affordable education, in fact, Mexico s public universities are almost
completely free. Paraphrased from Topuniversities.com, Based on official figures from the
German Education Exchange, that the average cost of studying in Germany is roughly $10,520
per year. Germany pays higher taxes than the United States, that is how the tuition is practically
free. Germans pay a 39.5% social tax, while Americans only pay a 24.8% social tax (Kohli,

tax does not go toward secondary education the way it does in Germany. Germany s social tax
helps their older citizens and their younger citizens, something the American government needs
to look at doing. Next, Belgium also pays a higher social tax, their social tax is higher but the
only thing that changes the cost of the education is where it is located. As stated by editor Dana
Vioreanu Belgium bases their tuition off of the regions in Belgium and almost none of the
universities charge more than 835 EUR per year (Vioreanu, 2016). Belgium charges what they do

Greenhouse Gases Persuasive Essay
Why start something if you can t finish it? Because, we cut down greenhouse gasses because we

tight, people are buying less. These are my three reasons to support my claim. I think that the U.S.
should not make laws on climate changeright away. Climate change is a very serious issue but, we
won t be able to start and stop it with the technology that we have. Also if the U.S will do
something about climate change, then so might others. Yet, these gases are dangerous risks to the
world s businesses, its environment and the health of all people. We have increased our demand of

Essay on Quentin Tarentino
Quentin Tarentino
Throughout the many years the film industry has grown, a certain type of filmmaker immerged,
known as an auteur. An auteur, usually a director, has a strong personal style and exercises creative
control over his or her works. Quentin Tarentino, for example, has proven himself to be an auteur in
various ways. Quentin Tarentino worked for four years as a clerk in a Los Angeles video store,
where he made his feature directorial and screenwriting debut of Reservoir Dogs, and where he
further expanded his great knowledge of film. Tarentino s personal style incorporates a lot of well

The last very brutal scene of the movie is when the whole crew of gangsters hold guns that are
pointed at each other for the sake of Mr. Orange s life. Eventually, the whole gang ends up dying,
even Mr. Orange. When he confesses to being a cop Mr. White puts a bullet in his head and is
instantly killed by the police officers that came in for the bust. All this violence portrays many
things about the film and about what Tarentino is trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster
characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience
how he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most
likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and violence leads to dead ends such as
jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well planned out diamond heist.
Quentin Tarentino uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. For
instance, when Mr. Blonde starts to lead his fellow criminals out to the car to look at the cop he
has captured. The camera begins to follow the group out to the car from their backsides, and then
opens up to the outside of the warehouse, from dark to light. This shows the criminals containment
in the warehouse; in a way trapped from leaving. When they arrive to the car, the camera shows
the criminals from a low angle. This represents their power over the cop, and the feelings they hold
for their superiority over law, when

According to the U.S. Department of Justice (2009):
An individual with a disability is defined by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a
person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech
Professional baseball player, Lou Gehrig, in his speech, Farewell to Baseball Address, sheds
light on his baseball career and why it was coming to an abrupt end. Gehrig s purpose was not to
be distraught about him getting diagnosed with ALS, but instead send a message to not take
anything for granted and be thankful for everything that happens. He adopts a thankful tone by
showing how humble he is to have played the game of baseball with many great people thus
using grateful terminology for his teammates and associates and reassuring terminology for
baseball fans who were worried about him and his fatal disease. Gehrig appeals to ethos in his
farewell speech by explaining to his audience how lucky he feels about who he was able to play...

Without the usage of pathos, Gehrig s farewell speech wouldn t have been nearly as effective
with his audience and the audience that would hear his speech or read his speech at a later time.
Without pathos, it would ve just been another professional sport players retirement speech. Many
key elements contributed to the emotional appeal of Gehrig s speech; first, he was finally
addressing the reason why he was retiring from baseball, which was because of a life threatening
disease known as ALS. Always regarded as one who could pull through anything, Gehrig finally
made it clear through this speech that battling this disease was going to be the hardest battle yet
and it would prevent him continuing to do what he loved which was play baseball. Nevertheless,
Gehrig did not wish to evoke sadness out of his audience, throughout his speech, he sought to give
hope over despair, thankfulness over pity, and humbleness over self righteousness. It was so
important that he displayed these emotions because then he would contrast to the ideals that many
American people had come to believe. Also throughout the speech Gehrig did not seek sympathy
from his situation; in fact, he did not once mention his disease specifically and rather focused on the
positive moments that he had experienced throughout his life. Hence, people connected to this
speech because here was a man who had experienced hardship upon hardship and yet still

Chocolate Milk Should Be Allowed In Schools
This delightful, candy like, thirst quencher that s adored by tons of children in our school, is now
a dangerous drink. I ve been researching about the popular chocolate milk, and found some
alarming facts. Chocolate milk actually attracts kids due to its sweetness, but it may turn away kids
from drinking regular milk. I don t recommend that kids drink chocolate milkin schools, because the
added sugar provides unnecessary extra calories when so many kids are already struggling with
their weight and unhealthy eating, states RD and nutrition/health expert Joy Bauer. Besides, there s
so much cholesterol and saturated fat, it can lead to tons of health problems. Although it may have
some benefits, there s really not much calcium in milk itself, but it may have many harmful
additives. This is a major problem and I think we need to ban chocolate milk in our school.... Show

Bad cholesterol can help heart attacks and strokes be more likely to happen. Saturated fat which

kids and parents think that chocolate milk is nutritious, the amount of cholesterol and saturated fat
in chocolate milk is so high that it can lead to obesity and other health problems, according to
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA].
Nevertheless, it turns out that chocolate milk does contain some nutrients. It contains potassium,

How Does Willy Loman Relate To Death Of A Salesman
Death of a Salesman captures the harsh reality of dreams that don t come true and the good life
passing by. I started Death of a Salesman with high expectations solely because of who the author
is and boy was I not disappointed. Like almost everybody, Willy Loman is a just person looking for
success but is probably his biggest enemy. He represented the dreamer in all of us. I think that s
exactly why Death of a Salesman is so successful; so many people can relate to it. One of my
favorite parts of the whole story was how every single character in the book reflected Willy. His
sympathetic and adoring wife is how he wished society would treat him. His kids were mere
models of him. His brother and neighbors live a life that he wished he

The Issue Of South Africa
Many of the contemporary issues in South Africa can easily be associated with the apartheid laws
which devastated the country. The people of South Africa struggle day by day to reverse the most
cruel, yet well crafted, horrific tactic of social engineering. The concept behind apartheid emerged
in 1948 when the nationalist party took over government, and the all white government enforced
racial segregation under a system of legislation . The central issues stem from 50 years of apartheid
include poverty, income inequality, land ownership rates and many other long term affects that still
plague the brunt of the South African population while the small white minority still enjoy much of
the wealth, most of the land and opportunities... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Around 1652, the Dutch East India Company created a settlement on the cape, leading to several
other indigenous peoples settling in the area as well . This tactic nearly parallels with the
colonization beginning throughout the rest of the world. White supremacy gradually took over
South Africa as more and more of them colonized the country, and worked their way into
government positions. The English pushed the natives out and eventually did not care about
race, merely about the money that came from labor . The Land Act of 1913, was believed to be
the initial beginning of the apartheid laws. This act initiated by white supremacists marked the
first major downfall of segregation for the colored and Indian peoples of South Africa. The
Afrikans were essentially divided into nine nations and approximately 93% of the land was
reserved for the white people. 2/3 of the population of South Africa at the time was considered
African, or native people, and these people were all banned from freely buying land , making
conditions very harsh, and malnutrition was extremely common . Urbanization occurred with
white people in power simply increasing the segregation between races. Africans continued to live
and work in absolutely terrible conditions. They often resided in the outskirts of cities in derisory
housing, with poor sanitation, were lucky to have a bit of electricity, and had awful people to
manage their workplace. The

While I only worked with the adoptable dogs and cats at the animal shelter, there were still risks.
As long as the dogs and cats had no history of aggression, they were put up for adoption, and I

aggression in the past does not mean that they will not in the future. Animals were brought into
the animal shelter on a daily basis. When being introduced to a new environment and new people,
stress for animal is unavoidable. Stress may manifest itself in fear and nervousness. Fear and
nervousness may lead to aggression. Aggression is usually a form of self defense for shelter

Robert Gray Poem- Old House and Late Ferry
Poetic Language is used to Capture Human Experiences;
`In Robert Gray’s poems, he uses language to capture human experiences.
In two of his poems; old house and late ferry, gray has effectively captured human experiences by
his varies poetic languages and through insight and feeling. Throughout both texts late ferry and old
house, gray’s main message in the poems, with his critical analysis, is the
destruction of nature by mankind.
In old house, gray has captured the human experience of the process of death. He does this through
insight and he effectively conveys this with poetic language such as the use of metaphor. This is the
title itself ‘ old house’.The title

He uses this imagery in this poem to emphasis this dark place in which he now lives. Deep sea
can be a cold and scary place. This would capture a human experience because deep in the sea
would be a dark and lonely which is something a human can feel and relate to.
Gray expresses, in late ferry, a human experience captured by the language technique of
symbolism, this is of colour. In this text, gray uses the colour of yellow to express light, and sun,
and to emphasis the preciousness of the colour yellow, which also symbolises gold. In this text,
gray conveys yellow as the happy colour of the light, which is more natural and sweet to him,
especially compared the fake lights and colours of the city.
Poetry is definitely language used to capture a part of human experiences. This is evident in both
late ferry and old house, which were written by the poet Robert gray. He informs his audience of
the destruction of nature, and this is happens by mere humans. This is evident by the artificialness
of the city in late ferry, and of an old house actually being an institute in old house. He does this
successfully through various uses of poetic language

The Importance Of College Is A College Worth It
Every year, around 20.4 million students in the United States go to college. Most students enroll

Personally, I have never given this question any serious consideration and the research I have done
has opened my eyes. I attend classes along with over 5,000 students here at UNK, and I doubt
many have had the opportunity to do the research and decide for themselves. As I began my

organisation is undisputable however it will bring some negative impacts to an organisation at the
same time. Human relations theories revolve broadly around fulfilling employees needs as an
individual in correlation to their job performance. Therefore, individualism could also indirectly
cause the breakdown of cooperation as well as social cycle. For instance, Maslow s and Herzberg s
theory which mentioned about reward as motivator

The Two Frida Kahlo Analysis
Dear Leslie,
I am in the city of Coyoacan, Mexico to visit Frida Kahlo s The Two Fridas, which she painted in
oil on canvas in 1939, depicting the era of Surrealism. Some say that her painting The Two Fridas
can be labeled as Surreal because of her sometimes bizarre and disturbing themes. Kahlo was not
interested in subjects that came from her dreams or the subconscious, yet her artwork was almost
always autobiographical. This is why this painting was Surreal. I am currently taking a trip to learn
more since you know that one of my favorite artists is Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo has done many self
portraits for her art work. Since she is a well known Mexican painter and I have the same
heritages it is important for me to know more. This is why I am traveling to Mexico to learn more.
In this piece of art, Kahlo paints a self portrait to trying to express the way she felt when she after
divorcing from Diego Rivera she wanted to express the pain of her torn hear that Rivera left when
they separated and the way she felt at that moment to trying to find herself. Amazingly, it is not that

She died in July 13 in 1954 in the same house she was born. Frida Kahlo was not only identified
as a surrealist but she is admired as a feminist icon. Her paintings were able to transmit her pain
throughout her life. Some of her formal education was before entering the National Preparatory
School, since her father Carl Wilhelm Kahlo Kauffmann was a German Mexican photographer.
She became his assistant in his photograph studio in 1910. Frida Kahlo had a major accident at
the age of 18 where she remain confined to her bed and begin to paint. Kahlo s tragedies
throughout her life and relationship with Diego Rivera were the circumstances that were reflected
on her piece of art of The Two

Secondhand Smoke Persuasive Essay
I stumbled out of a building, coughing and wheezing, smoke filled my eyes and lungs. I pulled
my tie frantically, my head beating as I ran out the entryway. I was having my supper when a
refined man at the table decided to light a cigarette. The smoke went directly to my face and lungs,
suddenly, I could not inhale, my chest hurt and I froze.
Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, is a mixture of two forms of
smoke from burning tobacco. Mainstream smoke exhaled by a smoker and Side stream smoke
from a lighted pipe, cigarette or cigar. When non smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke it is
called passive smoke and they take in nicotine and harmful elements the same way actual smokers
do. Tobacco smoke has more than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone can be exposed to secondhand smoking out in the open spots where smoking is
permitted, for example, a few eateries, malls, open transportation, stops, and schools. The Surgeon
General has proposed individuals to pick specific smoke eateries and organizations that restrict
smoking. They should inform proprietors of organizations that are not sans smoke realize that
secondhand smoking is destructive to your family s wellbeing.
Making your homestead smoke free is the most important thing to do for the sake of the health of
your family. Any family member can develop health problems related to secondhand smoking since
we spend more time at home than any other place. Multi unit housing can be essential where
smoking is allowed, although, tobacco smoke can move through air ducts, walls and shafts,
secondhand smoke can be controlled with ventilation, air cleaning or by separation of non smokers
and smokers.
Young kids are the most affected by instances of secondhand smoke and are least able to avoid it.
Most of their exposure comes from guardians or parents smoking, studies show that children whose
parents smoke get sick more often. The children have more cases of lung infections like pneumonia
and bronchitis, are more prone to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath and get more ear
infections. Secondhand smoke can cause asthma attacks, worsen asthmatic symptoms or result in
new cases of asthma in

Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implants
Over 360 million people or about five percent of the world population have disabling hearing
loss (Deafness). Disabling hearing loss refers to hearing loss greater than 40 decibels for adults
and a hearing loss of greater than 30 decibels for children (Deafness). 40 decibels is equivalent to
the tune of a refrigerator humming. Although hearing loss can be mild, moderate, severe, or
profound there are numerous ways of improving the damaged hearing (Deafness). The most
common ways are through hearing aids and cochlear implants. Cochlear implants is a type of
implanted electronic hearing device; it is designed to produce hearing sensations that are useful to a
person with profound nerve deafness Cochlear Implants ВЂВ“ Facts). The device is more ideal for
people who cannot benefit substantially with the help of hearing aids (Cochlear Implants ВЂВ“
Facts). Today, over 219,00 people are using Cochlear Implants (Cochlear Implants, Baylor). The
technology used in cochlear implants is more complex and improves hearing and communication
skills drastically. Despite cochlear implants having many disadvantages, there are more benefits that
will help towards improving hearing loss.
The research of hearing loss first started in 1950 (Cochlear Implants ВЂВ“ Facts). It was
discovered that hearing could be obtained by directly inserting an array of electrodes into the
cochlea of a patient with profound deafness. It took another 30 years of research before the implant
was commercially

Impeachments For Senators
The requirements for Senators are an interesting point in the Constitution, and it surprises me that
they remain identical to this day. Each senator serves for six years. It s interesting that each
elected Senator serves for three times as long as a Representative and for two years more than the
President, without re election of course. Senators are required to be five years older than
Representatives, but five years younger than the president, and they are also responsible for the
Impeachment process. It s interesting that Treason requires at least two eye witness to overt
treason, or open admission within court, and the punishment can only be against the person who
committed the crime, and not their associates or family. George Mason,

Immanuel Kant s Observations Of Enjoyment And Ralph Emerson
The readings of Immanuel Kant s Observations of Enjoyment and Ralph Emerson s pieces titled
Art and Circles displayed a kind of similarity between the two very different writers. Throughout
my essay you will see just how they are similar and what one would possible think of the others
ideas. You see no ideas are necessarily right or wrong ultimately like in life people do not always
agree In Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime section one by Immanuel Kant.
Immanuel Kant begins with discussing the idea that feeling happy or sad does not come from the
nature of external things but more of what a person s ability to let things make them feel pleasure
of pain. He stresses that all people are different. Something that may make someone feel upset can
make another happy. Kant then continues to talk about the feeling of the sublime and beautiful. He
uses examples to display his opinions. First he begins to talk about the sight of mountains along
with raging storms in which beautiful things enjoyment can be seen as well as horror. On the other
hand we can look at grazing flocks and Homers portrayal of the girdle of Venus. Kant sees those
through as a pleasant sensation with joy and smiling. You can see that the difference is that certain
beautiful situations can be seen as horror. Kant says that sublime must always be great. It must be
simple but the beautiful can be adorned and ornamented. From the reading I can conclude that Kant
strived to get his

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Pet Dog
In 2013, the U.S. lead the world in pet dog populations with 75.8 million dogs in the fifty states

emotional connection, support, and love a dog can provide. No matter one s age, ethnicity, or
geographic location, a good portion of people know the clichГ© but timeless saying a dog is a
man s best friend . This idea is so widely known and shared, it has been used in multiple ways to

Research specific risks, threats, and vulnerabilities to Web and social networking applications
Social networking worms: Social networking worms include Koobface, which has become,
according to researchers, the largest Web 2.0 botnet. While a multi faceted threat like Koobface
challenges the definition of worm, it is specifically designed to propagate across social networks
(e.g., Facebook, mySpace, Twitter, hi5, Friendster and Bebo), enlist more machines into its
botnet, and hijack more accounts to send more spam to enlist more machines. All the while
making money with the usual botnet business, including scareware and Russian dating services.

potent and popular banking Trojan that has been given new life by social networks. There have
been several recent high profile thefts blamed on Zeus, notably the Duanesburg Central School
district in New York State late in 2009. Once a Zeus Trojan infects a machine, it remains
dormant until the end user visits a Web page with a form to fill out. One of the toolkit s most
powerful features is that it allows criminals to add fields to forms at the browser level. This means
that instead of directing the end user to a counterfeit website, the user would see the legitimate
website but might be asked to fill in an additional blank with specific information for security
reasons. URL Zone is a similar banking Trojan, but even

Models of Corrections Essay
The history of correctional thought and practice has been marked by enthusiasm for new
approaches, disillusionment with these approaches, and then substitution of yet other tactics (Clear
59). During the mid 1900s, many changes came about for the system of corrections in America.
Once a new idea goes sour, a new one replaces it. Prisons shifted their focus from the punishment of
offenders to the rehabilitation of offenders, then to the reentry into society, and back to
incarceration. As times and the needs of the criminal justicesystem changed, new prisonmodels were
organized in hopes of lowering the crimerates in America. The three major models of prisons that
were developed were the medical, model, the community model, and the... Show more content on

Many criminals re offend after they are released because they were put back into society with no
money and no job and no place to live. Gradually allowing criminals to reenter society and
helping them to find jobs will put many on the right track. This program allows people a second
chance and the possibility to change their lives around. This program seems to be a necessity yet
it will not work for everyone. Not all criminals should be let out on the street again. Just because
you give a murderer a job and some money and secure them a place to stay, you have no idea
whether they have the desire to kill again . This program would work for those that were ready
to reenter society and would be extremely beneficial to those who have nothing on the outside to
help them. The third aim at bettering the system of corrections in America was the idea of the
crime control model. The crime control model was based on the assumption that criminal behavior
can be controlled by more use of incarceration and other forms of strict supervision (Clear 57).
This new model was designed with the intent to incarcerate prisoners for longer periods of time.
Under this program the death penalty was reinstated in thirty seven states. This model was thought
to have worked best for violent offenders such as drug dealers and murderers. It seems as though
this program was created to scare people from committing a crime because of the strict punishment
that would occur.

  • 2. Metamorphosis Analysis Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis is about the dehumanization of a man named Gregor, when he wastes his life monotonously repeating the same task every day to support his uncaring family. The lack of purpose in his life is an example of absurdist fiction, a genre of fictional narrative that uses satire and irrationality to explore the human experience of meaninglessness. Furthermore, The Metamorphosisuses aspects of magical realism, such as transformation of common, distortion of time and loss of identity, featured in other magical realism works such as Axolotl and The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World . Kafka s The Metamorphosis has both absurdist fiction and magical realism traits, therefore, should not only be classified as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His dad was an abusive father and businessman, Kafka s siblings represented Gregor s sister and his mother was the only who cared and supported him. Satire and the irrationality of life are key aspects of The Metamorphosis and are what makes it absurdist fiction. Kafka utilizes distortion of time, an element of magical realism in The Metamorphosis to show how Gregor is losing touch with humanity, similar to how Julio Cortazar uses it in Axolotl . Distortion of time shows the reader that the way Gregor lives in his world is different from the way we live ours, Magical realism...tells its stories from the perspective of people who live in our world and experience a different reality from the one we call objective (Rogers 1). Time is absent in The Metamorphosis , Often he just lay there the long nights without sleeping at all, scrabbling for hours on the leather. (112) this is significant because it shows how Gregor after turning into an insect, experiences reality differently. Before turning into an insect, Gregor s only purpose in life was to support his family and did not need to keep track on time. After his transformation, because he could not support his family anymore, he lost his purpose in life; without being able to use his time to support his family, he could only sit around and rot. Kafka adjusts the flow of time to show the reader the perspective of a man with no purpose. Axolotl is similar in this fashion, being in the magical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This thesis deals with the design and analysis of control system structures for electric drives equipped with permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) in automotive application. With the increasing popularity of multi level inverters, the room for improvement of the performance of voltage source inverters has continuously been tested for various applications. The rapid development of high switching frequency power electronics in the past decade leads towards wider application of voltage source inverters in AC power generation. Therefore, this prompts the need for a modulation technique with less total harmonic distortion, fewer switching losses, and wider linear modulation range. The present thesis highlights the comparison of the conventional two level inverter and the three level diode clamped inverters for the application in automotive industry. The thesis highlights the DC link balancing control which is the most commonly faced problem in case of a three level diode clamped inverter, with no additional circuit. Modifications of the modulation techniques for the realization of the DC link balancing control have been proposed. Comparison of the total harmonic distortion of the line to line voltages at the outputs of the two and three level inverters has been presented for PWM, SVPWM CB SVPWM techniques. The thesis also deals with the control of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive using Field Oriented Control technique. A PMSM drive system based on Field ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suicide in Bartleby and Life in the Iron Mills Essay Suicide in Bartleby and Life in the Iron Mills Life in the Iron Mills and Bartleby are centered on characters who are alienated laborers, looking for means through which they cannot be deprived of their humanity. Hugh Wolfe and Bartleby are both workers who have been victimized by the capitalistic system. As Karl Marx explains, the capitalistic system exploits the laborer and thus robs the laborer of his humanity through alienating the laborer. Both Wolfeand Bartleby become victims of the system, for they are not only alienated and dehumanized. But in their struggle against the system, they take their own lives. Bartleby s lack of human qualities bothered the narrator, as he did later become concerned about Bartleby s condition and began to inquire of his past. It is evident that the alienation process has already begun to take hold on Bartleby, long before he took the scrivener position. He is doing work for which he is being paid for and refuses to do any favors. He knows that his labor is for sale and that he will do only what the lawyer s money buys, and nothing more. Second, Bartleby makes it a point to explain that he would prefer not to do something, inserting the fact that he is the one deciding. Through his disobedience and his repeating the phrase I would prefer not to Bartleby was struggling to preserve his humanity. Bartleby refused to allow the lawyer to exploit his labor and his energy. The manner in which he was trying so hard to preserve his autonomy shows how he wished not to be further alienated from the work process, for he wanted control over exactly what task he did or did not perform. Child sexual abuse is sexual contact with a child that occurs as a result of force or in a relationship where it is exploited because of an age difference or caretaking responsibility (Finkelhor). Roughly 1.8 million children have been sexually victimized in the United States (NSOPW). Although there is no proof that racial or socioeconomic groups is a factor in a predators choosing, studies show that children who have parent complications or stepparents in their life are at a higher risk of experiencing sexual abuse, granted it could happen to anyone. Vulnerability is extremely present in ages between nine and twelve, but approximately a quarter of incidents take place before the child is eight years old (Finkelhor). However, sexual assault is severely under reported with about only 32% of incidents on record. Research shows that when an abuser is going to claim their victim they usually have an outlined strategy of their attack. They are precise and they take their time. Abusers are commonly familiar with their victim and already have gained their trust. Unfortunately, abusers are generally related to the child, or they spend generous amounts of time with them as a coach, caregiver, teacher, or even a significant other to the child s parent. Throughout Williams s article, she uses logos in multiple contexts to support her main arguments. One area readers encounter logical appeals is when the author refers to a point made by theorists William Cross, Robert Kegan, and Marcia Magolda. Each provide support for the idea that growth eventually occurs in all individuals. However, they also maintain that this growth does not happen at the same time for everyone. Individuals grow with time, increased maturity, and life experience. Most importantly, students grow at their own pace. To extend this point, the theorists emphasize that with time, individuals learn to separate their beliefs from who they actually are. By doing so, they are able to recognize that the opinions of others are not definitive of who they are, resulting in an increased tolerance for and ability to understand others. In the words of Williams (2016), We move from being our relationships to having our relationships, from being our beliefs to having our beliefs, from being our identities to having our identities. • 11. Henry Thoreau on Civil Disobedience The Statue of Liberty is an American symbol of justice and freedom from oppression, yet in Henry Thoreau s opinion, the U.S. government is completely antithetical. In Thoreau s essay on civil disobedience, he introduces and accepts the motto, That government is best which governs not at all. In his eyes, the government does more harm than good for its people. Underneath his seemingly main idea, Thoreau implies an overall antithesis where he defines who, in his eyes, is allowed to be disobedient. In order to advance this main idea and reinforce this mottos throughout the essay, Thoreau uses metaphors and juxtaposition to strengthen this subtle antithesis found throughout the essay. In his essay, Thoreau uses the extended metaphor of the government as machine to emphasize how government dehumanizes its citizens. He relates the government to a machine in that it is made up of many parts which all must work together for the machine to be successful. If something is broken, one can fix the machine in order to better suit his/her needs. Thoreau introduces this metaphor when he states, men serve the state not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. He begins with the first, military men who serve with their bodies. These men, in most cases, have no free exercise of moral sense serving under the state. Without the use of their moral sense or conscience, Thoreau comes to the conclusion that they can be replaced by objects such as wood and stones and therefore, have ... Harry Harlow s experiment with infant monkeys put this idea to the test to see if humans do rely on the importance of warm contact (king,2017), or if it is simply the emotion of loving someone. Many of the existing theories of love centered on the idea that the earliest attachment between a mother and child was merely a means for the child to obtain food, relieve thirst, and avoid pain (Cherry,2017). This experiment all comes back to attachment, which is when someone or something will start developing a bonding connection with their caregiver. Harlow s experiments correlate with my past experiences whereby I formed a beneficial attachment by warmth, which is the feeling of being safe and loved. Harlow s experiment started when the monkeys were separated at birth from their mother (Green, N.D.). Therefore, the monkeys had no idea who their actual mother was when the experiment was starting. All this violence portrays many things about the film and about what Tarentino is trying to suggest. He manifests these gangster characters with such disregard to living, going to jail, and swearing simply to show the audience how he believes criminals act. Quentin therefore tries to present a criminal lifestyle as it most likely is, not worth it. He suggests that a life of crime and violence leads to dead ends such as jail, death, or predicaments such as having an informant on a well planned out diamond heist. Quentin Tarentino uses tracking shots that also leave his mark on the movies he directs. For instance, when Mr. Blonde starts to lead his fellow criminals out to the car to look at the cop he has captured. The camera begins to follow the group out to the car from their backsides, and then opens up to the outside of the warehouse, from dark to light. The concept behind apartheid emerged in 1948 when the nationalist party took over government, and the all white government enforced racial segregation under a system of legislation . The central issues stem from 50 years of apartheid include poverty, income inequality, land ownership rates and many other long term affects that still plague the brunt of the South African population while the small white minority still enjoy much of the wealth, most of the land and opportunities... This tactic nearly parallels with the colonization beginning throughout the rest of the world. White supremacy gradually took over South Africa as more and more of them colonized the country, and worked their way into government positions. The English pushed the natives out and eventually did not care about race, merely about the money that came from labor . The Land Act of 1913, was believed to be the initial beginning of the apartheid laws. This act initiated by white supremacists marked the first major downfall of segregation for the colored and Indian peoples of South Africa. The Afrikans were essentially divided into nine nations and approximately 93% of the land was reserved for the white people. 2/3 of the population of South Africa at the time was considered African, or native people, and these people were all banned from freely buying land , making conditions very harsh, and malnutrition was extremely common . Urbanization occurred with white people in power simply increasing the segregation between races. Africans continued to live and work in absolutely terrible conditions. They often resided in the outskirts of cities in derisory housing, with poor sanitation, were lucky to have a bit of electricity, and had awful people to manage their workplace. The ...
