It is said that humanistic psychology was developed upon the limitations of behaviourism. The
humanistic approach is often referred to as the third force in psychology coming after psychoanalysis
and behaviourism; it is an alternative approach to psychology (Maslow, 1968). It offered a more
wholesome approach to psychology at the time in comparison to behaviourism and psychoanalysis.
This essay will compare and contrast behaviourism and humanistic psychology; it will focus on their
contributions to psychological theory and their applications in the real world. Why don t we make
what can be observed the real field of psychology (Watson, 1929). Watson (1878 1958) was born into
a poor family in South Carolina. His mother was a religious woman, and his father drank a lot and had
multiple affairs (Watson, 1999). Watson himself married twice, having two children in each marriage.
He didn t seem to have good relationships with his children it is said that one of the main reasons for
this may be because he used his children throughout his research. He studied in the University of
Chicago where he later became known as the founder of Behaviourism. He wrote an essay in 1914
titled Psychology as the Behaviourist views it where he stated that behaviourism is an objective
experimental branch of natural science (Watson, 1914). Behaviourism is a theory of learning that

How are you doing? I m doing okay. I m sorry for not sending you a letter sooner, but the days have
been super busy lately. I have gotten ill on the journey to Hawaii, but luckily the illness went away

The Nwmp s Annexation Of Canada
The lands of Canada are vast and spread for thousands of miles touching two seas. The government of
Canada was set in the East in Ontario and could only reach so far. When British Columbia joined
confederation in 1871 it posed an issue to the government of Canada, the West coast was too far away
to easily control. As a solution to this the Canadian government created the Northwest Mounted Police
(NWMP), a group of officers who had jurisdiction on the West coast. The NWMP were successfully
able to stop and prevent the illegal whiskey trade plaguing the West, prevented the annexation of
Canada s western land, and most of all brough law and order to the lawlessness that existed in the
West. These brave men made the West a safer place for settlers. In the early 1870s American traders

One thing the American people wanted was more land. Moving North into Canada would be easy
enough to take. The lack of defense may have been enough for the American government to move
North until the NWMP arrived. Word of the NWMP and their deeds had already made its way to the
ears of Americans and the raw efficiency of the NWMP discouraged any outlaws thinking they could
go North. With troops now holding the fort in the Northwest Americans did not want conflict and felt
that going North would not be their best option. If the Americans did go North they would be met with
resistance from the NWMP and any other soldiers sent by the Canadian government to fight in lands
