Tammany Hall Gambling
State and federal laws preventing lotteries had a profound unintended consequence. There is a long
history of illegal gambling proceeds corrupting politics and one of the most appropriate examples
involves the Democratic Party political machine of New York City, Tammany Hall. Zachariah
Simmons built a very organized network with hundreds of policy shops throughout New York City.
In just one week, the gross receipts totaled $1 million and a great deal of those profits trickled
down to the local political bosses. Tammany Hall ruled politics in New York City for decades by
a few simple means corruption and voter fraud. For example, Tammany Hall literally released
prisoners from the penitentiary to vote for them in the election of 1843. William... Show more

Big Tim Sullivan was the leader of an unofficial gambling commission in New York City.
Members of the secretive commission included Frank Farrell (New York City gambling mogul),
a State Senator, and the Chief of Police, Bill Devery. Every gambling house, policy shop, and
craps game was charged at least $300 for a license, which was collected by the local precinct
captain. There was no pretense with these licenses as there were no regulations in place to protect
consumers. This was simply a lucrative bribery system amounting to $3,095,000 for the year of
1900, according to the The New York Times. Obviously, the ban on gambling wasn t

High School Football Athletes Essay
The mindset that society thrusts upon most high school athletes can take away from academics
and other opportunities they may have for their future. For many high school football athletes,
they are primarily focused on one thing throughout their high school years: sports. Evidence 1:
In towns such as Odessa in Friday Night Lights, players are swallowed up by the glamour of
football and neglect most things not related to football, rather than balance sports with academics.
It was a phenomenon that Trapper had seen dozens of times before, a kid so caught up in it all
that there was no room for anything else, another kid for whom nothing in life would ever be so
glorious, so fulfilling as playing high schoolfootball. Trapper didn t see the... Show more content on

When they focus too much on football or whatever sport they are playing, than their grades falter,
and they lose their chance to get a solid degree. One student that broke the trap that high school
athletes fall into is Brian Chavez, a student at Permian High School in Friday Night Lights. As the
number one student in his class, his aspirations extended far beyond the glimmer of expectation
that a Texas school, any Texas school, might be willing to give him a football scholarship. He
had set his sights differently, zeroing in on a target that seemed incomprehensible to his family,
his friends, just about everyone. He wanted to go to Harvard (Bissinger 13). Chavez is
essentially the antithesis of all his peers and classmates; instead of making football the high point
of his entire life, he values his future and education over the present glory of football. Despite
being pressured into setting aside his future dreams in order to better the team, he does not fall
into the trap his society had set for him. Chavez ended up enjoying Permien football as well as
going to Harvard, so he is the prime example of how high school athletes should carry themselves.
But unfortunately, it is extremely tough for most athletes in towns such as Odessa or Winthrop to
do so. High school football encapsulates their entire lives, and the pressure put

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
When most people hear broken heart they think a bad breakup right? Well that s not the only
way broken heart can be used, it can also be used a literal sense, like when talking about an Atrial
Septal Defect (ASD). An Atrial Septal Defect is a hole in the wall between the two upper
chambers of the heart. There are symptoms and ways to diagnose ASD. Also what happens if you
do not treat ASD. There are many ways to treat ASD.
Most people with ASD do not show symptoms and seem as if they are healthy. One symptom is
shortness of breath (Mayo, 2017). This shortness of breath can amplify during physical actively
such as working out. This particular symptom can be misdiagnosed as sports induced asthma. ASD
can also cause the lungs to take longer to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The untreated patients will have stable health through the first two decades of life. If gone past two
decades of life, the problems that will occur involve circulation of blood and damaged lungs (Dr.
Martin personal communication May 11th, 2017). A problem related to not treating ASD is
congested lungs, which interferes with the movement of oxygen from the air into the blood. It also
affects the ability to remove carbon dioxide from the blood. The lungs are continually working
harder than normal lungs (sharecare, n.d.). An additional problem that occurs with the lungs is
increased pressure and thickness within them. The unoxygenated blood from the veins starts going
to not only the lungs but everywhere in the body, because it is mixing with oxygenated blood where
the hole is (Dr. Martin person communication May 11th, 2017). Another complication is irreversible
damage to the blood vessels from pulmonary artery hypertension. Abnormal heart rhythm and
strokes are also two common results of not treating an Atrial Septal Defect (sharecare, n.d.). Larger
defects left untreated can cause Right sided heart failure. A less common complication that can
occur is Eisenmenger Syndrome, which is pulmonary hypertension that causes permanent lung
damage. Pulmonary hypertension is increased blood flow to your lungs that then increases the
blood pressure in the lung arteries (Mayo, 2017).
To avoid those long term affects the patients should get an Atrial Septal Defect treated. To
determine the plan for treatment the doctors look at the size of the hole. The affected person has to
have wall for the device to attach to get the cardiac catheterizations. If the patient has little to no
wall present then open heart surgery is used to fix it (Dr. Martin personal communication May 11th,

Mannerisms distract your customer from what you say. In a recent seminar I went to, the presenter
said that 75% of the customer s decision will be based on the movements and the impression you
give from attitude. Try to exchange small talk with your client, for instance how long have you
been here then? however, don t go too far you don t want to go over the top and distract the

way the customer is heading so you can direct your questions to suit their needs.
To avoid objections, begin the meeting by asking both Tim and John exactly what they are looking

War, Home, And Patriotism In War Is Kind By Stephen Crane
Many poems about the civil war convey universal themes of the time. Stephen Crane s poem War
is Kind is no different. The poem, War is kind written by Stephen Crane(1871 1900) has three
themes common to civil war literature: Warfare, Home, and Patriotism. This poem s overall theme
is about how war destroys families conversely to the title of Waris Kind or the many times which
Crane says War is Kind . The three themes of warfare, home, and patriotismare displayed in many
pieces of Civil Warliterature consequently making them the universal themes. Firstly is the theme
of Warfare and destruction of families caused by it. To start off with the theme of Warfare is
common in many civil war literature. Do not weep, maiden, for... Show more content on

The definition of patriotism is pride in your country or cause, conversely the war is seen as
unpatriotic because the men seem to be fighting for nothing. Hoarse, booming drums of the
regiment, /Little souls who thirst for fight, /These men were born to drill and die. (Lines 6 8)
This adds on to the idea of the war being unpatriotic by showing that the men were only born to
fight, or to Drill and Die consequently making it seem as if they were fighting just to fulfill their
needs. This theme is also seen in lines 17 18 Swift, blazing flag of the regiment, / Eagle with
crest of red and gold, (Lines 17 18) This flag is a very simple representative of death and illness
using the colors it did. This all helps to result in the patriotic theme of the poem by giving us a
representation of how unpatriotic the war was. To conclude the poem War is Kind By Stephen
Crane includes three universal themes commonly seen in many examples of civil war literature.
The themes of warfare, war on the home front, and patriotism occur in the poem as well as many
other pieces of civil war literature. The overall theme of the poem is how war is cruel and unkind
making the poem seem like mockery to those who believe war is

How Did Gender Bias Impact The Scientific Perception Of...
Marie Curie is famously known to be one of the first women known to make very large
contributions to science, and known as a distinguishable woman for receiving two Nobel Peace
Prizes. However, looking past, her gender, her achievements as a scientist, not a female scientist,
were remarkable. Today radium is most commonly known for its use to treat specific types of
cancer. This remarkable treatment can be attributed to Marie Curie, yet still she known to be the

However, the relationship of Pierre and Marie completely juxtaposed this social norm of the era.
They worked furiously to isolate polonium and radium and when they were successful credit was
given mainly to Pierre. Originally the Nobel Peace Prize was supposed to be awarded to Henry
Becquerel and Pierre Curie in 1903. Marie Curie would not be credited because it was viewed by
the public that she only assisted Pierre with his experiments. Pierre did not like to be recognized
for his work, but insisted that Marie be credited and be a recipient of the prize which made
Marie Curie the first female recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Tragically, in 1905 Pierre was
killed by a truck. This left Marie as a single parent with three children. In her autobiographical
notes of Pierre s biography, she states I have been frequently questioned, especially by women,
how could I reconcile family life with a scientific career . Eventually, she takes on Pierre s full
time job as the Professor general of Physics at Sorbonne. She continued her studies of radium,
focusing on radioactivity which resulted in her win of a second Nobel Peace Prize in 1911.
However, despite her high achievements she is was denied membership to the French Academy of
Sciences because of her gender. Among the people that denied her membership were some of her

Savage Inequalities Analysis
The 1991 article Savage Inequalities written by Jonathan Kozal he highlights the fact that every
person is entitled to the right to receive quality care and education, but there can be overwhelming
social factors that prevent students in a small Illinois town from getting an equal education. The
author shrewdly described the morbid living conditions experienced by the residence of East St
Louis, Illinois. A predominately black community near the banks of the Mississippi River.
I think the author exposes the steady decline of a place that was once named an All American city.

listed by specific letters as follows: (Sub issue a): Did the District fail to implement the IEP as
written or change the IEP without parental input? No. Under the IDEA students are entitled to a
free and appropriate public education which conforms to the student s individual education
program. Under the IDEA and federal precedent, one of the factors used in determining whether
a school district substantively and procedurally provided a FAPE to a student is whether the
services provided to the student conformed to his or her IEP as it was written. (20 U.S.C. В§

s provision of services substantively and procedurally provided a FAPE involves four factors: (1)
the services must be designed to meet the student s unique needs; (2) the services must be
reasonably designed to provide some educational benefit; (3) the services must conform to the IEP
as written; and, (4) the program offered must be designed to provide the student with the foregoing
in the least restrictive environment. While this requires a school district to provide a disabled child
with meaningful access to education, it does not mean that the school district is required to

Strategic Capabilities
Strategic Capabilities 2011 Introduction Strategy is all about planning the next moves, making
decisions how and where to move forward from the current position. In the past, strategy was
associated mainly with the military sector, the top chiefs of command were making tactical
choices in order to defeat their rivals and achieve victory. In the business sector the purpose of
strategy is in principle the same, planning and building a road or path that will lead us to where
ever it is we want to be in the future and to overcome all obstacles that might lay on the way.
However, there is a difference between those two sectors, soldiers need only to follow orders

The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Analysis
Life is difficult because no one can be sure if the choice they make will actually lead the
outcome they wished for. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, one of the most recognizable
poems in American literature, speaks to choices people face in their life. The speaker has to
make a right choice for him, that will lead to the outcome of being what he really wants to be.
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost uses symbolism, imagery, personification, and metaphor, to
explain its theme that choices made by the one s strong wish of what one really wants to be, will
ultimately lead to the desired outcome. The poem uses symbols to indicate the choices that the
speaker faces in life. The two diverged road symbolize the two significant choices that diverge
the future of speaker s life. The fork in the road indicates the point in the speaker s life where he
can go no farther without making a decision that takes him down one path and does not allow
him to take the other. The yellow wood (1) indicates fall when the leaves turn yellow in the
forest. Fall is a symbol of the waning years of speaker s life, meaning that the speaker is past his
youth when he can make a choice with the confidence that it is correctable at a later time.
Therefore, the choice that he will make is permanent and highly impacts the rest of his life.
Imagery and personification are used to describe contradiction in the process of making a
decision between the two paths. Since he cannot take both roads, the speaker looks down the
road but cannot see beyond the undergrowth, which expresses the fact that no one knows what
the future will bring. Much of the imagery in the poem is visual to describe the path to show the
speaker s indecisiveness of choosing a certain path. He wants to choose the path that is less
traveled so he chooses the path that is having perhaps the better claim (7), which is the path that is
grassy and wanted wear (8), a personification to describe that road is not stepped by other people.
However, he realizes that there is no appreciable difference between the two paths because both that
morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. (11,12) The contradiction with the serious
tone shows perplexity that the

Spreading Your Wings Essay
The mythological story of Icarus is ...interpreted variously as an allegory of pride, or of man s
quest for knowledge, as The Bloomsbury Guide to Art stated in their article ( Icarus ). This idea
of the quest of knowledge itself applies to the work of Russell Whiting, a sculptor whose work is
featured in the River Gallery SculpturePark of Chattanooga and who sculpted a statue of Icarus as
well. In correlation with the interpretation of the story of Icarus being a man s quest for
knowledge, Whiting did not just fall in love with the process of carving steel, but also with the
potential for self expression, variation, and knowledge regarding steel still left to be attained. The
majority of Whiting s work... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, Whiting emphasizes the fact that he does not specifically analyze or try to represent his
work, though often originating from other previous artist facets, in a certain manner. Rather, he
lets his artistic expression flow out of him and leaves the analysis to his viewers. Therefore,
being fully open to interpretation, a viewer may infer a variety of things from Whiting s
sculpture of Icarus. Approaching the piece from an iconographic perspective, Icarus conveys a
sense of freedom and the presence of ignorance and naivety associated with being young. For
some, an acknowledgeable aspect of the piece may be the fact that he chose to suspend Icarus
off the side of the hill at the far end of the garden. In fact, the anchoring which holds him up is
built in such a way as to elude the public to believe he is not attached at all but merely freely
leaning out over the crisp water with his outstretched wings. Whiting also paid a remarkable
amount of attention to the texture present on the wings and the muscular tone of the body. The
tone and idealization of the body, which is anatomically similar to that of a boy, is realistic with
hints of idealization of form. Furthermore, an interesting aspect of Icarus being placed distantly
over the water is that his face is hidden from viewers. Whiting may have chosen to position him
like this so as to incorporate a sense of mystery and add to the psychological value of the piece.

Cacao Influence On Mayan Culture
At first consideration, chocolate and the Maya peoples do not appear to be related in any
manner, but this could not be farther from the truth. Cacao, the tree from which chocolate is
processed, is heavily intertwined in the religious and secular lives of the Maya, in the past as well
as the present. Chocolate, as we know it today, too was born from the Maya and their contact with
the Europeans, perhaps the only good thing to come from the interactions. Thanks to the
Europeans, cacao has impacted the rest of the world in as great a manner as it impacted the Maya.
The Maya were, and are, a group of Mesoamericans whose settlements spanned from Mexico to

Adoption Of Single Parent Households
Two thirds of all children in the U.S. will spend some time in a single parent household before
they re eighteen. In fact, the amount of single parent families has been steadily increasing in the
past few decades. If single parent households are becoming part of the norm, then why are
adoptions by single men and women still facing so much scrutiny? This is a countless amount of
people who are trying to adopt as a single parent that are being overlooked by the adoption
agencies in favor of married couples. On top of this, single parents that are trying to adopt are
faced with scrutiny from society. Singles trying to adopt will be able to provide the same
amount of love and money as a married couple so they should be presented with the same
opportunities to adopt. There are many children wanting to be adopted, and many singles with
the adequate resources to raise a child, and doesn t make sense to rid a child of a stable home. In
the U.S., there are 397,122 children are living without permanent families in the foster care
system. 101,666 of these children are eligible for adoption but nearly 32% of these children will
wait over three years in foster care before being adopted. In 2012, 23,396 youth aged out of the

Kaleidoscope Eyes Analysis
Internal Comments:
No. While the idea that we choose to see the world either optimistically and pessimistically is
beautifully expressed throughout the poem, it comes across as trite in parts. The main idea of the
poem is not completely developed instead, the author spends too much time on unnecessary side
characters. In addition, there are several errors in terms of grammar as well as imprecise word
choice.
To the First Reader:
Dear Denee Freeman, thank you for your commentary on submission 10405 ( Kaleidoscope Eyes ).
All of your comments are formatted correctly, and I particularly appreciate your depth on your
specific comments. In terms of things to work on, I would recommend being more gentle in your
wording. A question posed with language... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author does this by presenting a variety of snapshots of people with this grey world view,
lingering on the last snapshot of the family, to expand on the kaleidoscope view of the children.
You re obviously aware of how language impacts mood, and do a nice job choosing their words.
I wished this poem had more showing, instead of telling, such as with the failed marriage and the
will to continue living. I think more specificity in your images, would eliminate both some of the
moments where the poem borders on cliche as well as the moments that distance the reader from
the snapshots. Personal details with make the poem stronger, and feel like the reader is in your
snapshot scenes.
The second note for revision I have for this poem is to think about the form. Right now the form isn
t particularly helping you, and in some places with the uneven spacing and unnecessary stanza
breaks, it actively hurts your poem. I would consider fewer stanzas personally. I wonder even about
having a very regimented line, stanza, or even a syllabic pattern, except for those lines speaking
about kaleidoscope eyes. Thank you so much for submitting to Polyphony H.S.; continue

Ya Hey Poem Meaning
There are many pop cultural songs that are listened to today while waiting for the beat to drop
rather than taking a moment to understand the words. What happens if the time is taken to
comprehend the true depth behind the lyrics? Vampire Weekend s song, Ya Hey, is a song with
enormous intellect within the lyrics. The number is eclectic with references to the story of
Moses prominently standing out. The lyrics of Ya Hey are both an obvious and secret innuendo
to the Moses story. One of the first allusions made to the Moses story is during the pre chorus.
The lines state, In the dark of this place/There s the glow of your face. This is a reference to the
glow upon Moses face in Exodus 33 verse 23 when God said to Moses, then I will take away my
hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen. It is seeing God s back that
Moses had a luminous glow to his face. Also during the pre chorus, the words Ya Hey are spoken
in a series of three. In Hebrew, the number three is a divine number and refers to God. When
listening closely, Ya Hey is a homophone for Yahweh. The combination of the series of three and
homophone are attributing factors to the idea of Moses calling out to God.... Show more content on

God would not reveal his name, but stated I am, that I am when asked by Moses what he is to
say to the people. This instance occurs in Exodus 3 verses 13 14 when Moses asked, If they ask
me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? God replied I AM WHO I AM. The translation
is switched between who I am and that I am, and noted by the interchanging lyrics. Ut Deo is said
in the background and means to God. When said, it sounds like What Deo. This blurred
pronunciation refers to Moses questioning to God on what he is to

A trade, sir, that I hope I may use with a safe conscience, which is, indeed, sir, a mender of bad

1.Shakespeare creates a pun between a cobbler and soles. A cobbler fixes shoes, and on a shoe,
there is a sole. Cobbler uses the pun that he is a mender of damaged soles, which factually means
that he repairs the soles of shoes, but also means that he mends souls. The cobbler indicates that his
job involves fixing the soles of shoes. He also states an opinion to Marullus poor humor and says
that he might need to med the Tribune s bad soul.

Johnson And Billingsley Summary
I understand your observation of the climate in the negotiating table where representatives from the
two sides at times becomes negative. I think the stalemate occurs because each group has the
mentality of the EITHER/ OR and not of the AND . In their article, Johnson and Billingsley (2014)
discussed how the great companies had transcended this mentality by not believing and operating in
the tyranny of the OR i.e., that things must be either this or that, but not both. Instead, truly great
companies practice the genius of AND embracing a number of opposing dimensions at the same
time (p. 230). The example that was cited by Johnson and Billingsley (2014) was the tension
between Magnet and Nursing Unions. Although, both have advanced

Bullet In The Brain Tobias Wolff
In Bullet in the Brain, author Tobias Wolff uses a non traditional plot and a technique of zooming
in/zooming out to help readers understand the difference between wasting their lives or living
fully. The effect of shifts in the plot, point of view, and different perspectives of his character
startle the reader while simultaneously pulling him into an expanded awareness of the story and
its underlying central idea. Bullet in the Brain demonstrates Wolff s profound approach to life with
the theme that a life not lived fully is worse than death. It is the process of choosing how to
respond boldly and courageously to random acts in each moment that is important and memorable.
So many thing in our world tend to lead us to despair.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wolff is poking fun at himself and the reader by leading them to assume they know the outcome.
He continues to lead the reader by using third person limited point of view to describe a typical
bank and to only depict Anders personality. He masterfully couples the limited point of view with
far away psychic distance to make the reader assume that the plot will keep following a predictable
path. This technique allows Wolff to control the reader s involvement with the characterand the
overall ho hum story, up to this point. Then, Wolff suddenly shifts the psychic distance, changes to
third person omniscient, and lets the reader view the character s last thoughts. Anders voice comes
through as the reader gets closer in his head. Wolff takes a significant risk with his narrativeby
jumping straight from a far away distance into Anders last memory. It is like a movie being shot
with a wide angle camera, then suddenly, almost jarringly, the camera zooms in for a close up. In
a paragraph reminiscent of a CSI medical zoom in moment, Wolff uses this psychic close up when
he describes the bullet tearing into Anders brain: the first appearance of the bullet in the cerebrum
set off a crackling chain of ion transports and neurotransmissions (1358). The reader is taken into
the character s very mind and memories to create an extreme sense of proximity and understanding

Sam Steemal And Hyde Case Study
MILLERSBURG The only one of two candidates to accept an invitation to participate in a Meet the
Candidates event, Holmes County Municipal Judge Andrew Hyde spoke Thursday about himself,
his experience and the judicial system in general as he defended his position as incumbent.
He is challenged by local attorney Sam Steimel, who according to organizer Martin Mann, was
contacted several times about the event, but respectfully declined.
Hyde was sworn into office on Nov. 11 by former Holmes County Common Pleas Judge Thomas
D. White. He was appointed to the position by Gov. John Kasich in the immediate wake of the
death of Judge Jane Irving Baserman. Because Irving was less than halfway through her term, a

I think it s in bad taste, she said, expressing concerns about Steimel s ability, because of a long
family history in the community and a wife elected to the position of clerk of courts, to be impartial.
She said she also is concerned about how much time he has actually spent practicing in municipal
court and what she perceived to be, comparatively, less experience than Hyde.
At the same time, she said, in the wake of Hyde s appointment to the bench, I felt bad because
you ve been such a terrific defender of everything. I feel for the poor, downtrodden who can t have
you as a lawyer.
Because it is a primary race, to cast a vote for either judicial candidate, voter must request a
Republican ballot. And, because there are no candidates on the Democratic ticket this election,
Hyde encouraged even Democrats to take out a Republican ballot, cast a vote, have a voice and
then, come the next primary cycle, You have a chance to go right back to the Democratic Party.
The deadline to register to vote in the May 2 primary election is April 3. In person absentee voting
begins April 4, at the Holmes County Board of Elections, where office hours are 8 a.m. 5 p.m.,

A Brief Note On The Conflict Resolution Skills
Conflict Resolution Skills
According to Hashish, Hamouda, and Taha (2015), conflict is healthy, common, and necessary for
growth and Losa Iglesias and Becerro De Bengoa Vallejo (2012) have noted that conflict has been
a vital factor of social functioning throughout history and the present, which has been widely
defined in the literature.
Scenario
You are a newly hired Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) who began working at the Health For
You, Family For Us clinic. As for patient care in the clinic, you are currently under two doctors,
Dr. Paul and Dr. Snick; however, Dr. Snick has been particularly unkind to you. After meeting with

1. Win/win approach1
Win/win approach focuses on both parties being able to come together on appropriate terms, while
feeling that each person has resolved their point and has expressed gratification that each party has
essentially won after the conflict. Example: You express to Dr. Paul that Dr. Snick has been
disregarding your narcotic prescription signing request. According to her, Dr Snick has been having
a rough patch and stated that in the meantime you can resolve this by handing me the prescriptions
to sign. This appears to be a win/win resolution; Dr. Paul is eager to help his new colleague, you
are able to do your job effectively and Dr. Snick will not feel imposed on. 2. Creative response
Although Dr. Paul is eager to assist with your prescription signing, there are days when she may
be unavailable and you re left with the only option of Dr. Snick. Approaching the doctor, can
take some bravado; however, you re open to conversation and conflict resolution for the sake of a
healthy, therapeutic work environment. Creatively, you express to Dr. Snick that he is the best
doctor that the world has ever seen in hopes of conflict resolution, to lessen the tension and to
hopefully receive a positive reaction. 3. Empathy Because Dr Snick has disregarded your
prescription signing, you inquire about his reasoning. He then tells you that he is under a lot of
pressure and that he does not want to be bothered by having to sign other colleague s

Essay about Argument Against Human Cloning
In 1997, the first clone of a sheep named Dolly was created. This embryo had a success rate of one
to four percent. When applied to humans, this percentage may decrease and become lower and
more unpredictable. With lives at stake, is it worth the risk of the embryos involved in the unstable
process? Although cloningmay allow for new medical procedures and research of diseases and
cures, it takes away from the natural biological order of life, and allows humans to play God while
creating a margin of error which could result in many defects. Many ethical and moral dilemmas
arise when discussing humancloning, and one can have many positions for and against each. To
understand the issues surrounding human cloning, one must have a basic... Show more content on

In 1997, President Clinton proposed a moratorium on cloning that would not allow funding by
the government. A bill was also presented in the Senate in 2001 that would legally ban cloning
regardless of its funding, whether it was federal or private. The repercussions of infringement on
this law would be up to ten years in jail and a fine of up to $10 million (A). Human cloning
proposes many arguments for each opposing side and can greatly impact the modern world
based upon the research obtained through it. Whether or not that research is morally and
ethically correct is the topic of most discussions in the genetics field. Beginning with the moral
argument, one must understand reproductive freedom. Most cloning activists say that
reproduction, or the lack there of, is a natural freedom given to people (C). Restricting human
cloning would be a violation of that right. Just as people can choose not to reproduce using
contraception, abortion, or abstinence, people should be allowed to use all means possible
within their ability to reproduce, such as through cloning and in vitro fertilization (C). Cloning
is the application of this right specifically (C). Another benefit of cloning is the ability to clone
someone who has died to console those who are grieving over their lost loved one or to clone the
DNA of a person that was known for his of her greatness. Scientists would be able to recreate these
people in a new environment (C). A clone s parent may have come from

Testicular Cancer Research Paper
Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer is a cancer that only occurs on men. This cancer forms in the
testicles, or testes, of a male. The testicles are positioned inside of the scrotum which is next to
the penis and looks like a bag of skin. The purpose of the testicles is to produce sperm and they
contain sex hormones. Reproductive bodies called germ cells develop into sperm through a
process of cellular division called meiosis (4). Normally cell division is regulated but in testicular
cancerthe germ cells begin to divide uncontrollably and, instead of producing functional sperm, the
germ cells create copies of themselves making them cancerous cells. This kind of out of control
division may happen to any type of cell in the testicle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are numerous ways to treat it since there are different types of testicular cancers and
different stages. One treatment can be surgery. There are two different surgical procedures, one
is to remove the testicle and the other to remove a lymph node (2). Removing the testicle is the
most common treatment because it can be done on merely all types of testicular cancer and in
different stages. The procedure to remove the testicle is done by having the surgeon makes an
incision in your groin and extracts the entire testicle through the opening (2). The patient also has
the option to have a prosthetic testicle implanted to replace the one the surgeon took out.
However, having only one testicle does not impair the patients sexual potency or fertility. There
is a brief decrease of sperm production but that is only temporary (5). The surgery in which the
lymph node is removed is done by making an incision on the abdomen. This surgery is more
dangerous due to all the nerves surrounding the lymph nodes. If the surgeon accidentally damages
a can be difficult for the patient to have an ejaculation, but they can still have an erection (2). After
the surgery the patient will most likely need to schedule for another appointment to check on the
progress. These follow up appointments consist of blood tests, CT scans and periodic x rays in
order to check that the

Racially Offensive Speech
Recently in 2015 the topic on college campuses is racially offensive talk. When I first heard
about this I was shocked. I never thought of a college ever being a place where you d find
students talking in a racist way. To me school has always been a place where I didn t think anyone
had to worry about hateful or racially offensive speech. But to my surprise many campuses around
the United States have this problem and they need to find a way to solve it.
According to an article I read titled AMERICANS ARE SPLIT ALONG PARTY LINES OVER
WHETHER SCHOOLS SHOULD PUNISH RACIST SPEECH This article surprised me how many
college students think penalty should be given to people on campus using hateful or racially
offensive speech, to try and resolve this problem. In a poll done by Huffington Post/YouGov
reviled that 53 percent of college students feel this way. The same poll reviled that 45 percent of
students think that the College campuses should be responsible for teaching students about issues

Elsie de Wolfe, Eleanor McMillen Brown, and Dorothy Draper were three extraordinary women
who pioneered the field we know today as interior decorating. All three of these women grew up

Racial Tension Between Black And White People
Since the beginning, there has been racial tension between black and white people. Well, if one
can call it that. For the longest time blacks were NOT considered people. Different countries
throughout the world debated on if they were subjects, workers, anything less than that. The
eventual improvement from the 3/5 of a person compromise to the abolishment of slavery in 1865.
After almost one hundred years of movements (there were more, but these can be considered a part
of the Civil Rights Movement), segregation wasn t abolished until the Brown V Board of
Education case in 1954; then total abolishment in The Civil Rights Act of 1964. Still to this day
racismand racial tension runs amuck. Without mentioning the Black Lives Matter movement, a
heated debated spark the attention of the whole nation. This debate was none other than the
differing of opinions of the rebel flag.
The racist hate crime massacre in a Charleston, South Carolina AME church by a WHITE male
tipped the old debate over the meaning of the Confederate (Rebel) flag. Becoming the hot topic
for newspapers, news stations, talk shows, social media, and conversations between friends,
people had to draw a delicate line between blacks vs whites and right vs wrong. This is mentioned
with a grain of salt as both whites and blacks opposed the flag and supported it.

leverage on the present, to subvert the single story stereotypes that dominate many contemporary
discourses on Africa. Written in the genre of historical fiction, Adichie s novel transcends beyond
mere historical narration and recreates the polyphonic experiences of varying groups of people in
Nigeriabefore and after the Civil War. She employs temporal distortion in her narrative, distorting
time in order to illustrate the intertwining effects of the past and present, immersing deep into the
impact of western domination that not only catalyzed the war, but continues to affect contemporary

Anabolic Androgenic Steroid Abuse in Professional Sports Anabolic androgenic steroids are a
huge problem amongst today s athletes. The use of these drugs has been around for many years
in sports. Understanding anabolic androgenic steroids and why people take them is needed in
the process of trying to eliminate them from professional sports. Also, players knowing and
understanding how the negatives of anabolic androgenic steroid use outweigh the positives will
hopefully help new players who are looking for an edge on the competition to refrain from the
use of anabolic androgenic steroids. Along with the harmful side effects players can experience
from anabolic androgenic steroid abuse, it also hurts the integrity of professional sports as a
whole. Allowing players access to intervention programs and treatment can help to curb the
widespread use of AAS. My goal in this paper is to show what anabolic androgenic steroids are,
why they impact sports in a negative way, and why they give professional athletes an unfair
advantage and shouldn t be a factor in sports. Anabolic androgenic steroids and other performance
enhancing drugs has always been a forbidden thing in sports, but have just recently come into the
spotlight again. According to Machado and Cortez Pinto, Anabolic androgenic steroids are
synthetic derivatives of testosterone, the main male sex hormone (280). Athletes mainly take

Genetic Mutagenesis Screen
Question 1
(1A) Design a forward genetic mutagenesis screen, in a fly or rodent model, that would allow you
to identify genes required for proper axon guidance. Discuss the main steps involved in this
approach.
Question: Which genes are required for proper axonal guidance of the mesolimbic and/or
nigrostriatal dopamine pathways in the mouse?
Brief background: In mice, the first DA neuron neurites appear at E11.5. These neurites extend
towards the striatum, forming the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), the main neural tract connecting
ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the substantia nigra (SNc) to the striatum. At E14.5 the DA
neurites approach the border of ventrolateral ganglionic eminence (VM). These neurites then
multiply without further ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perform complementation analysis to determine if the generated mutation is unique or has been
previously described. To perform the analysis, I would mate the mutants I produced with known
mouse lines which have null mutations in genes known to be important for DA neuron axon
guidance (DCC / , Nkx2.1 / , Pax6 / , Slit1 / , Robo1 / ). If WT phenotype is produced by the cross,
the mutations are in 2 different genes. If the offspring shows mutant phenotype, the mutation might
occur in the same gene (Hegarty, Sullivan et al. 2013).
5.Perform linkage analysis to map the gene. This technique is used to relatively position gene of
interest in relationship to the known gene. For this analysis I would have to pick genes which
produce different phenotype from the one seen in the mutants generated in my experiment. The
mutants generated are then mated with this known mutant of a different phenotype and both traits
are examined in the offspring. In the offspring produce both phenotypes, the genes may be near
each other and are inherited together.
6.One the location of the gene is determined, the gene is then cloned (design primers and PCR the
gene, insert gene into a vector). Cloning of the gene will allow for future experiments in which the
gene can be manipulated in vitro or in

In The Wedding Banquet (Dir. Ang Lee, 1993) The Inner...
In The Wedding Banquet (dir. Ang Lee, 1993) the inner conflict of coming out of closet is
constantly at play as the main character Wai Tung (Winston Chao) juggles his partner Simon
(Mitchell Lichtenstein), a fake marriage and his parents. Coming out of the closet for some is
seen as a form of both vulnerability and liberation, while remaining in the closet may be seen as a
form of survival. For Wai Tung coming outof the closet would mean that his father s dreams of
continuing the family name would die out but remaining in the closet for Wai Tung means having
to marry Wei Wei (May Chin) and alter his life with Simon forever. In one of the earlier scenes of
the film Wai Tung is seen filling out an application for a singles club his... Show more content on

Simon clicks his tongue out of frustration and almost impatience with Wai Tung still being in the
closet. In response to this Wai Tung rolls his eyes and shifts his weight away from Simon. This
can be read as Wai Tung s frustration with the conversation and that he knows that Simon would
never be able to understand the difference in their families. Simon goes as far as ridiculing Wai
Tung and attacking his masculinity and independence. Simon and Wai Tung in this scene
represent the two extremes of coming out of the closet or remaining in it, respectively. Towards
the end of the scene Wai Tung starts to debate what he is doing by keeping these secrets from his
family. He admits that it isn t the best but also acknowledges that it s something he has been
doing for a while and is used to it. This scene really tugs on Wai Tung s thoughts on coming out,
at first he is very comfortable with his space in the closet because it is just from his parents. He
still has his life in New York with his gay partner and his parents think that he ll eventually find
someone through the applications for his perfect women. For Wai Tung the closet [is] a relatively
liberating place to inhabit because he knows he can push away the familial responsibilities for a bit

An Effective Retail Design That Maximize Success For Juice...
This problem case details the steps to determine an effective retail design that would maximize
success for Juice Guys in the east coast market. After reaching triumph in the west coast market,
Juice Guys is looking to expand firstly into the Boston neighbourhoods. Boston consumers had a
strong likeness for NantucketNectars but the market was different: metropolitan city (year round)
versus summer only in Nantucket Island.
To accomplish this feat, the company must decide how to target and position the stores given the
differential differences in demographic and environmental traits. Furthermore, Juice Guys needs to
determine who are their customers, their inclinations for the product and their preferences to a
smoothie store. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poses a substantial financial loss as each store provides a total of $1300 with margins as high
as 50%. Alternatively, Juice Guys has only been successful in the west coast; therefore the
company will not risk future losses. However, as there is a growing market for healthy lifestyles,
this presents a considerable growth option for the company.
2.Expand into east coast and design like west coast
Juice Guys currently has a strong reputation in the west coast, which can be carried forward to
their operations in the east. They have a deep reputation with consumers for their products, which
leads to increased potential of brand resonance. However, as the west coast consumers differ from
the east, there is the possibility of Juice Guys products not being accepted as welcomingly.
3.Expand into east coast and design for east coast needs
Juice Guys can capitalize on the brand equity of the brand yet design retail concepts in Boston
according to local needs. This option will allow the company to replicate the success they achieved
in Nantucket Island (modifying operations to open during summer to meet local consumer needs).
Additionally, this will allow the Boston market to understand this new product offering. However,
as retail concepts differ across the country, there may be the lack of consistency across the brand,
which will confuse consumers in Juice Guys brand message.
Critical Issues
1.Difference in market

imposition of colonial institutions, systems, as well as lifestyle disruption. However, distinctions
in the origin, form and impact of those social determinants, as well as the distinct peoples involved,

The War Of 1812 Pitted Two Western Powers
The War of 1812 pitted two western powers against one another, the newly established United
States of America and the ancient United Kingdom. Battles raged on for roughly two and a half
years, resulting in what many agree ended in a tie. What many disagree with is how the war came
to fruition. The two research papers within Retrieving the American Past seek to connect the dots.
Firstly, Reginald Horsman cites many concrete reasons behind the warfare: British impressment,
calling back the return of American soldiers deemed responsible to serve in the Royal Navy, upon
the American army, meddling with maritime trade between the States and European nations
(notable France), and inciting or taking part in Indian attacks against the colonies.... Show more

Although both papers contain the truth, Horsman s comes much closer to explaining the reasons
behind the War of 1812. McCoy speaks through the eyes of the Jeffersonian community, not the
entire American population. Due to its smaller scope of the relevancy, Mccoy s paper is less
effective than Horsman s. Drew McCoy s paper includes much more depth into the Jeffersonian
mindset. The American economy depended largely on the exportation of farm grown items.
Clearly, access to foreign markets is a must for success. These markets were made inaccessible by
the presence of British ships scattered about the passageways to France and other European
countries. Jeffersonians, peaceful by definition, suggested a lengthy embargo. This holdout would
put pressure on Americans to manufacture within their country, thus building a feeling of unity.
However, the embargo lasted for a little longer than a year and a half, yielding no positive results
for America. Jefferson himself was attacked and accused of resisting commercialism. It was soon
decided that foreign commerce was best for the country s economic welfare. As McCoy states, the
Jeffersonians were presented with two options: ... accept the failure of peaceable coercion to
remove restrictions on American commerce and submit to the British orders in council, or they
could attempt, through military means, a forcible assertion of America s right to an independent
and unrestricted access to

The Trial And Death Of Socrates
Philosophical attitudes, as Arthur E. Murphy explains, are attitudes where ones should not cease to
stop pursuing the truth, which they should wonder about things around them, understand the
meaning behind of that existence, perceive the ideas from different perspective, and knows one
self s knowledge. He also points out that the one with philosophy attitudes should be open minded
and responsible. However, we need a certain example to prove whether this explanation is right or
not. For that, in this essay, we will use Platos The Trial and Death of Socrates, as our example of
how this kind of attitudes play in Socrates life as it is well known as intelligently and morally lived
one.
In Euthyphro section, Socrates meets a man named Euthyphro before his trial, where he is
being accused by Meletus for corrupting the youth. While Euthyphro is here to prosecute his
own father for the case of murder. Socrates starts to ask him about his meaning of piety. It is not
being seen because it is a thing seen but on the contrary, it is a thing seen because it is being
seen; nor is it because it is something led that it is being led but because it is being led that it is
something led; not is something being carried because it is something carried, but it is something
carried because it is being carried.
What Socrates means from this is that what people might believe is the truth might not be the truth,
just because people believe it to be the truth. People tend to follow the

The American Cinema s First Phase
`American Cinema s first phase (up to around 1917) is characterised by an onscreen coming to
terms with the nation s transformation into a mature industrial society (Jon Lewis, Early Cinema ,
P.3) with all its attendant thrills and anxieties. Discuss.
An evolution of society occurred with the dawn of the twentieth century, an undeniably American
progression. With a sudden introduction to technologies only just tangible, Alexander Graham Bell
s telephone in 1876 and Henry Ford s car in 1908 amongst a few of these newly invented
accomplishments, divisions in wealth and subsequently class became even more distinguished
than before. An exodus to the urban landscape had begun at the turn of the century, between
1880 and 1920 the proportion of Americans living in urban centres grew from 26 to 51 percent
(Lewis, 3), and as the melting pot of New York grew under the divided class system and
overwhelming industrial progress crime inevitably took a hold in the streets and behind closed
doors. D.W Griffiths borns into the world the first ever gangster movie, an urban folk take
(Merritt, 161) that was intended to portray the evil of the gangster in New York. (Merritt, 158).
Created a social expose Griffiths gangster movie takes an intimate snapshot of the streets of the
urban jungle and gives the audience a reality they didn t realise they were living.

  • 2. Tammany Hall Gambling State and federal laws preventing lotteries had a profound unintended consequence. There is a long history of illegal gambling proceeds corrupting politics and one of the most appropriate examples involves the Democratic Party political machine of New York City, Tammany Hall. Zachariah Simmons built a very organized network with hundreds of policy shops throughout New York City. In just one week, the gross receipts totaled $1 million and a great deal of those profits trickled down to the local political bosses. Tammany Hall ruled politics in New York City for decades by a few simple means corruption and voter fraud. For example, Tammany Hall literally released prisoners from the penitentiary to vote for them in the election of 1843. William... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Big Tim Sullivan was the leader of an unofficial gambling commission in New York City. Members of the secretive commission included Frank Farrell (New York City gambling mogul), a State Senator, and the Chief of Police, Bill Devery. Every gambling house, policy shop, and craps game was charged at least $300 for a license, which was collected by the local precinct captain. There was no pretense with these licenses as there were no regulations in place to protect consumers. This was simply a lucrative bribery system amounting to $3,095,000 for the year of 1900, according to the The New York Times. Obviously, the ban on gambling wasn t ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. High School Football Athletes Essay The mindset that society thrusts upon most high school athletes can take away from academics and other opportunities they may have for their future. For many high school football athletes, they are primarily focused on one thing throughout their high school years: sports. Evidence 1: In towns such as Odessa in Friday Night Lights, players are swallowed up by the glamour of football and neglect most things not related to football, rather than balance sports with academics. It was a phenomenon that Trapper had seen dozens of times before, a kid so caught up in it all that there was no room for anything else, another kid for whom nothing in life would ever be so glorious, so fulfilling as playing high schoolfootball. Trapper didn t see the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When they focus too much on football or whatever sport they are playing, than their grades falter, and they lose their chance to get a solid degree. One student that broke the trap that high school athletes fall into is Brian Chavez, a student at Permian High School in Friday Night Lights. As the number one student in his class, his aspirations extended far beyond the glimmer of expectation that a Texas school, any Texas school, might be willing to give him a football scholarship. He had set his sights differently, zeroing in on a target that seemed incomprehensible to his family, his friends, just about everyone. He wanted to go to Harvard (Bissinger 13). Chavez is essentially the antithesis of all his peers and classmates; instead of making football the high point of his entire life, he values his future and education over the present glory of football. Despite being pressured into setting aside his future dreams in order to better the team, he does not fall into the trap his society had set for him. Chavez ended up enjoying Permien football as well as going to Harvard, so he is the prime example of how high school athletes should carry themselves. But unfortunately, it is extremely tough for most athletes in towns such as Odessa or Winthrop to do so. High school football encapsulates their entire lives, and the pressure put ... • 4. Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) When most people hear broken heart they think a bad breakup right? Well that s not the only way broken heart can be used, it can also be used a literal sense, like when talking about an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). An Atrial Septal Defect is a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. There are symptoms and ways to diagnose ASD. Also what happens if you do not treat ASD. There are many ways to treat ASD. Most people with ASD do not show symptoms and seem as if they are healthy. One symptom is shortness of breath (Mayo, 2017). This shortness of breath can amplify during physical actively such as working out. This particular symptom can be misdiagnosed as sports induced asthma. ASD can also cause the lungs to take longer to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The untreated patients will have stable health through the first two decades of life. If gone past two decades of life, the problems that will occur involve circulation of blood and damaged lungs (Dr. Martin personal communication May 11th, 2017). A problem related to not treating ASD is congested lungs, which interferes with the movement of oxygen from the air into the blood. It also affects the ability to remove carbon dioxide from the blood. The lungs are continually working harder than normal lungs (sharecare, n.d.). An additional problem that occurs with the lungs is increased pressure and thickness within them. The unoxygenated blood from the veins starts going to not only the lungs but everywhere in the body, because it is mixing with oxygenated blood where the hole is (Dr. Martin person communication May 11th, 2017). Another complication is irreversible damage to the blood vessels from pulmonary artery hypertension. Abnormal heart rhythm and strokes are also two common results of not treating an Atrial Septal Defect (sharecare, n.d.). Larger defects left untreated can cause Right sided heart failure. A less common complication that can occur is Eisenmenger Syndrome, which is pulmonary hypertension that causes permanent lung damage. Pulmonary hypertension is increased blood flow to your lungs that then increases the blood pressure in the lung arteries (Mayo, 2017). To avoid those long term affects the patients should get an Atrial Septal Defect treated. To determine the plan for treatment the doctors look at the size of the hole. The affected person has to have wall for the device to attach to get the cardiac catheterizations. If the patient has little to no wall present then open heart surgery is used to fix it (Dr. Martin personal communication May 11th, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment, /Little souls who thirst for fight, /These men were born to drill and die. (Lines 6 8) This adds on to the idea of the war being unpatriotic by showing that the men were only born to fight, or to Drill and Die consequently making it seem as if they were fighting just to fulfill their needs. This theme is also seen in lines 17 18 Swift, blazing flag of the regiment, / Eagle with crest of red and gold, (Lines 17 18) This flag is a very simple representative of death and illness using the colors it did. This all helps to result in the patriotic theme of the poem by giving us a representation of how unpatriotic the war was. To conclude the poem War is Kind By Stephen Crane includes three universal themes commonly seen in many examples of civil war literature. They worked furiously to isolate polonium and radium and when they were successful credit was given mainly to Pierre. Originally the Nobel Peace Prize was supposed to be awarded to Henry Becquerel and Pierre Curie in 1903. Marie Curie would not be credited because it was viewed by the public that she only assisted Pierre with his experiments. Pierre did not like to be recognized for his work, but insisted that Marie be credited and be a recipient of the prize which made Marie Curie the first female recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Tragically, in 1905 Pierre was killed by a truck. This left Marie as a single parent with three children. In her autobiographical notes of Pierre s biography, she states I have been frequently questioned, especially by women, how could I reconcile family life with a scientific career . Eventually, she takes on Pierre s full time job as the Professor general of Physics at Sorbonne. Savage Inequalities Analysis The 1991 article Savage Inequalities written by Jonathan Kozal he highlights the fact that every person is entitled to the right to receive quality care and education, but there can be overwhelming social factors that prevent students in a small Illinois town from getting an equal education. No. Under the IDEA students are entitled to a free and appropriate public education which conforms to the student s individual education program. Under Rowley and state and federal statutes, the standard for determining whether a district s provision of services substantively and procedurally provided a FAPE involves four factors: (1) the services must be designed to meet the student s unique needs; (2) the services must be reasonably designed to provide some educational benefit; (3) the services must conform to the IEP as written; and, (4) the program offered must be designed to provide the student with the foregoing in the least restrictive environment. • 12. The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost Analysis Life is difficult because no one can be sure if the choice they make will actually lead the outcome they wished for. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, one of the most recognizable poems in American literature, speaks to choices people face in their life. The speaker has to make a right choice for him, that will lead to the outcome of being what he really wants to be. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost uses symbolism, imagery, personification, and metaphor, to explain its theme that choices made by the one s strong wish of what one really wants to be, will ultimately lead to the desired outcome. The poem uses symbols to indicate the choices that the speaker faces in life. The two diverged road symbolize the two significant choices that diverge the future of speaker s life. The fork in the road indicates the point in the speaker s life where he can go no farther without making a decision that takes him down one path and does not allow him to take the other. The yellow wood (1) indicates fall when the leaves turn yellow in the forest. Fall is a symbol of the waning years of speaker s life, meaning that the speaker is past his youth when he can make a choice with the confidence that it is correctable at a later time. Therefore, the choice that he will make is permanent and highly impacts the rest of his life. Imagery and personification are used to describe contradiction in the process of making a decision between the two paths. Since he cannot take both roads, the speaker looks down the road but cannot see beyond the undergrowth, which expresses the fact that no one knows what the future will bring. Much of the imagery in the poem is visual to describe the path to show the speaker s indecisiveness of choosing a certain path. He wants to choose the path that is less traveled so he chooses the path that is having perhaps the better claim (7), which is the path that is grassy and wanted wear (8), a personification to describe that road is not stepped by other people. However, he realizes that there is no appreciable difference between the two paths because both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. • 13. Spreading Your Wings Essay The mythological story of Icarus is ...interpreted variously as an allegory of pride, or of man s quest for knowledge, as The Bloomsbury Guide to Art stated in their article ( Icarus ). This idea of the quest of knowledge itself applies to the work of Russell Whiting, a sculptor whose work is featured in the River Gallery SculpturePark of Chattanooga and who sculpted a statue of Icarus as well. In correlation with the interpretation of the story of Icarus being a man s quest for knowledge, Whiting did not just fall in love with the process of carving steel, but also with the potential for self expression, variation, and knowledge regarding steel still left to be attained. The majority of Whiting s work... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, Whiting emphasizes the fact that he does not specifically analyze or try to represent his work, though often originating from other previous artist facets, in a certain manner. Rather, he lets his artistic expression flow out of him and leaves the analysis to his viewers. Therefore, being fully open to interpretation, a viewer may infer a variety of things from Whiting s sculpture of Icarus. Approaching the piece from an iconographic perspective, Icarus conveys a sense of freedom and the presence of ignorance and naivety associated with being young. For some, an acknowledgeable aspect of the piece may be the fact that he chose to suspend Icarus off the side of the hill at the far end of the garden. In fact, the anchoring which holds him up is built in such a way as to elude the public to believe he is not attached at all but merely freely leaning out over the crisp water with his outstretched wings. Whiting also paid a remarkable amount of attention to the texture present on the wings and the muscular tone of the body. The tone and idealization of the body, which is anatomically similar to that of a boy, is realistic with hints of idealization of form. Furthermore, an interesting aspect of Icarus being placed distantly over the water is that his face is hidden from viewers. Whiting may have chosen to position him like this so as to incorporate a sense of mystery and add to the psychological value of the piece. Since his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Cacao Influence On Mayan Culture At first consideration, chocolate and the Maya peoples do not appear to be related in any manner, but this could not be farther from the truth. Cacao, the tree from which chocolate is processed, is heavily intertwined in the religious and secular lives of the Maya, in the past as well as the present. Chocolate, as we know it today, too was born from the Maya and their contact with the Europeans, perhaps the only good thing to come from the interactions. Thanks to the Europeans, cacao has impacted the rest of the world in as great a manner as it impacted the Maya. The Maya were, and are, a group of Mesoamericans whose settlements spanned from Mexico to Belize, beginning as early as 1500 B.C.E (Maya People). In fact, the amount of single parent families has been steadily increasing in the past few decades. • 22. Ya Hey Poem Meaning There are many pop cultural songs that are listened to today while waiting for the beat to drop rather than taking a moment to understand the words. What happens if the time is taken to comprehend the true depth behind the lyrics? Vampire Weekend s song, Ya Hey, is a song with enormous intellect within the lyrics. The number is eclectic with references to the story of Moses prominently standing out. The lyrics of Ya Hey are both an obvious and secret innuendo to the Moses story. One of the first allusions made to the Moses story is during the pre chorus. The lines state, In the dark of this place/There s the glow of your face. This is a reference to the glow upon Moses face in Exodus 33 verse 23 when God said to Moses, then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen. It is seeing God s back that Moses had a luminous glow to his face. Also during the pre chorus, the words Ya Hey are spoken in a series of three. In Hebrew, the number three is a divine number and refers to God. When listening closely, Ya Hey is a homophone for Yahweh. • 29. Essay about Argument Against Human Cloning In 1997, the first clone of a sheep named Dolly was created. This embryo had a success rate of one to four percent. When applied to humans, this percentage may decrease and become lower and more unpredictable. With lives at stake, is it worth the risk of the embryos involved in the unstable process? Although cloningmay allow for new medical procedures and research of diseases and cures, it takes away from the natural biological order of life, and allows humans to play God while creating a margin of error which could result in many defects. Many ethical and moral dilemmas arise when discussing humancloning, and one can have many positions for and against each. To understand the issues surrounding human cloning, one must have a basic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1997, President Clinton proposed a moratorium on cloning that would not allow funding by the government. A bill was also presented in the Senate in 2001 that would legally ban cloning regardless of its funding, whether it was federal or private. The repercussions of infringement on this law would be up to ten years in jail and a fine of up to $10 million (A). Human cloning proposes many arguments for each opposing side and can greatly impact the modern world based upon the research obtained through it. Whether or not that research is morally and ethically correct is the topic of most discussions in the genetics field. Beginning with the moral argument, one must understand reproductive freedom. Most cloning activists say that reproduction, or the lack there of, is a natural freedom given to people (C). Restricting human cloning would be a violation of that right. Just as people can choose not to reproduce using contraception, abortion, or abstinence, people should be allowed to use all means possible within their ability to reproduce, such as through cloning and in vitro fertilization (C). Cloning is the application of this right specifically (C). Another benefit of cloning is the ability to clone someone who has died to console those who are grieving over their lost loved one or to clone the DNA of a person that was known for his of her greatness. Scientists would be able to recreate these people in a new environment (C). A clone s parent may have come from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Testicular Cancer Research Paper Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer is a cancer that only occurs on men. This cancer forms in the testicles, or testes, of a male. The testicles are positioned inside of the scrotum which is next to the penis and looks like a bag of skin. The purpose of the testicles is to produce sperm and they contain sex hormones. Reproductive bodies called germ cells develop into sperm through a process of cellular division called meiosis (4). Normally cell division is regulated but in testicular cancerthe germ cells begin to divide uncontrollably and, instead of producing functional sperm, the germ cells create copies of themselves making them cancerous cells. This kind of out of control division may happen to any type of cell in the testicle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are numerous ways to treat it since there are different types of testicular cancers and different stages. One treatment can be surgery. There are two different surgical procedures, one is to remove the testicle and the other to remove a lymph node (2). Removing the testicle is the most common treatment because it can be done on merely all types of testicular cancer and in different stages. The procedure to remove the testicle is done by having the surgeon makes an incision in your groin and extracts the entire testicle through the opening (2). The patient also has the option to have a prosthetic testicle implanted to replace the one the surgeon took out. However, having only one testicle does not impair the patients sexual potency or fertility. There is a brief decrease of sperm production but that is only temporary (5). The surgery in which the lymph node is removed is done by making an incision on the abdomen. This surgery is more dangerous due to all the nerves surrounding the lymph nodes. If the surgeon accidentally damages a can be difficult for the patient to have an ejaculation, but they can still have an erection (2). I never thought of a college ever being a place where you d find students talking in a racist way. Menne Composition Mrs. Vidden 14 January 2015 Anabolic Androgenic Steroid Abuse in Professional Sports Anabolic androgenic steroids are a huge problem amongst today s athletes. The use of these drugs has been around for many years in sports. Understanding anabolic androgenic steroids and why people take them is needed in the process of trying to eliminate them from professional sports. Also, players knowing and understanding how the negatives of anabolic androgenic steroid use outweigh the positives will hopefully help new players who are looking for an edge on the competition to refrain from the use of anabolic androgenic steroids. Along with the harmful side effects players can experience from anabolic androgenic steroid abuse, it also hurts the integrity of professional sports as a whole. Allowing players access to intervention programs and treatment can help to curb the widespread use of AAS. My goal in this paper is to show what anabolic androgenic steroids are, why they impact sports in a negative way, and why they give professional athletes an unfair advantage and shouldn t be a factor in sports. These neurites extend towards the striatum, forming the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), the main neural tract connecting ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the substantia nigra (SNc) to the striatum. If WT phenotype is produced by the cross, the mutations are in 2 different genes. If the offspring shows mutant phenotype, the mutation might occur in the same gene (Hegarty, Sullivan et al. 2013). 5.Perform linkage analysis to map the gene. This technique is used to relatively position gene of interest in relationship to the known gene. For this analysis I would have to pick genes which produce different phenotype from the one seen in the mutants generated in my experiment. The mutants generated are then mated with this known mutant of a different phenotype and both traits are examined in the offspring. Battles raged on for roughly two and a half years, resulting in what many agree ended in a tie. What many disagree with is how the war came to fruition. The two research papers within Retrieving the American Past seek to connect the dots. Firstly, Reginald Horsman cites many concrete reasons behind the warfare: British impressment, calling back the return of American soldiers deemed responsible to serve in the Royal Navy, upon the American army, meddling with maritime trade between the States and European nations (notable France), and inciting or taking part in Indian attacks against the colonies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although both papers contain the truth, Horsman s comes much closer to explaining the reasons behind the War of 1812. McCoy speaks through the eyes of the Jeffersonian community, not the entire American population. Due to its smaller scope of the relevancy, Mccoy s paper is less effective than Horsman s. Drew McCoy s paper includes much more depth into the Jeffersonian mindset. The American economy depended largely on the exportation of farm grown items. Clearly, access to foreign markets is a must for success. These markets were made inaccessible by the presence of British ships scattered about the passageways to France and other European countries. Jeffersonians, peaceful by definition, suggested a lengthy embargo. This holdout would put pressure on Americans to manufacture within their country, thus building a feeling of unity. However, the embargo lasted for a little longer than a year and a half, yielding no positive results for America. Jefferson himself was attacked and accused of resisting commercialism. It was soon decided that foreign commerce was best for the country s economic welfare. Murphy explains, are attitudes where ones should not cease to stop pursuing the truth, which they should wonder about things around them, understand the meaning behind of that existence, perceive the ideas from different perspective, and knows one self s knowledge. He also points out that the one with philosophy attitudes should be open minded and responsible. However, we need a certain example to prove whether this explanation is right or not. For that, in this essay, we will use Platos The Trial and Death of Socrates, as our example of how this kind of attitudes play in Socrates life as it is well known as intelligently and morally lived one. In Euthyphro section, Socrates meets a man named Euthyphro before his trial, where he is being accused by Meletus for corrupting the youth.
