Advantages And Disadvantages Of Outdoor Cat
How many times have you seen a cat wandering outside alone, you thinks it s a stray but at closer
glance it has a collar, but why is it out there. On the loose? Just because it wants too? Outdoor cats
are at a higher risk of being hurt, getting lost and turmoil in neighbourhoods. An indoor cat is
protected by it s family and the house walls, but owners who let their catout can find them self in a
dilemma. These catscan get taken, attacked or become lost. Outdoor cats can end up in
neighbourhoods where there are rude people or other animals. There is always a risk when going
outdoors, but does it increase for your pet?
A cat s claw is as sharp as a chef s knife and it could really hurt you, animals or itself. Cats are
very territorial animals, they don t like when they see other cats. An outdoor cat could come
across another cat who isn t so friendly. I personally have had this happen. My cat is an indoor
cat, and even though he doesn t go outside too often he is very territorial. There is this cat who
comes around and jumps up to the window ledge to play we don t know if that is his intentions
or he wants to fight. On the insde my cat is running back and forth, attacking the window trying to
get to him. These events create a lot of stress and anxiety on my cat. It s not just other cats are the
problem it is also other animals. Outdoor cats could attack other animals such as dogs, skunks, and
so on. Cats are natural born hunters when it comes to wildlife, but where do

Understanding Memes In Human Genes
Understanding Memes
Genes are the genetic code that allows us to pass down and spread our traits and DNA to our
descendants. It is constantly changing as we adapt and multiply our species, inheriting and letting
go of certain traits to implement into the next person. Much like these genes, memes are also the
sort of code that humans use to link our ideas to each other. A memecan be an idea, an image, a
sound, a phrase, or any combination of these. Their means of transportation along our web of
knowledge is (or forms of) language. Before modern language, it was hard to demonstrate abstract
ideas and pass them down to the next generation, but now, it is commonplace.
Where did the term meme originate from?
The history of the term meme is fairly recent, but from the point of view modern society ... Show

Now while this may be true of the meme modified specifically for that purpose, its origins were
not fueled by any sort of hate or racism. This is a prime example of how the mutation of memes
can be suited and selected for purposes, much like how animals inherit certain genes to help them
adapt to a specific environment. People with common interests or opinions can take a common
idea, and adapt or twist it to make it suit their purposes, making the idea itself take on a biased
view among others unaware of the original intent of said idea. While not common amongst political
and corporate organizations, the modification and adaptation of memes has been a way to express
personal thoughts in a way others can relate for quite some time within certain internet
communities. Memes don t typically come about for specialized purposes, but they can inherit traits
to end up doing exactly

The Impossibility Of Imprisoning The Mind
To Althea, from Prison : Richard Lovelace (Close read)
Lovelace s poem To Althea, from Prison expresses two concepts: the impossibility of
imprisoning the mind and therefore the impossibility of repressing one s belief in a cause, or in
this case, a person. The initial lack of explicitness of the meaning of the poem is exemplified by
the mysteriousness of the woman, Althea, who is rather unspecific in description, and ethereal,
described as divine. Whether or not the woman was real, or herself imaginary is unimportant to
the poem, which is all about the lack of division between true reality and reality of the mind. The
juxtaposition between the body and the mind reflects the same conflict within Lovelace himself,
and in fact all Cavalier poets: the altogether real matters of war and politics and the expression of
poetry and imagination.
It is interesting that while the speaker is writing of freedom and the indomitability of the mind,
he describes himself as being tangled to Althea s hair and fetter d to her eye. This is language
undoubtedly of constraint, and seems to work in contention with the what in fact the speaker is
expressing; in fact, Lovelace is trying to express that even behind bars, and tangled and fetter d
in his own mind s eye, he is still freer than the birds he evokes. This nature imagery appears in the
first three stanzas of the poem, as does the ending line of know no such liberty, this repetition of
imagery, as well as the repetition of

The Godfather Sociology
The Godfather is an interesting and moving film with everything from family disputes to
organized criminal activity. This movie is rated R and should be seen in the absence of children.
The Godfather shows how close organized crime families are and they would do anything to
protect them. This movie takes place in the 40 s and 50 s in New York. Marlon Brando portrays
Vito Corleone, also known as the Godfather. Al Pacino portrays Michael Corleone, Vito s youngest
son. The Godfather was inducted to the National Film Registry in 1990 (Library of Congress). In
this movie, Coppola showed how, within this family, it was split into two social institutions: crime
and regular Italian American family. Whoever the current Godfather is takes extra care... Show

Michael, being a college, World War II hero, he tests his strength and cunning to avenge his
father s near murder. The Corleone family has the drive for revenge, the need for respect and
demand for justice. The eldest son, Sonny, (played by James Caan) and Michael had very
different views on how the family should be ran. Sonny wanted to get the family out and go
after the other families, while Michael wanted to play it low key and continue business how the
Godfather would have wanted it. The primary business that the Corleone family was involved in
was gambling and unions. Other families felt rejected when Don Vito Corleone declined to enter
the drug business saying that it was a dirty business . A man who doesn t spend time with his
family can never be called a man (Don Vito Corleone). This line hit home for me because my job
keeps me away from my family for 24 hours at a time.
This movie also shows how a family of immigrants could create a life in America by creating an
empire of crime. Another point this movie proved was that money talks. With money and power,
you can get anything you want. During the making of The Godfather, the Italian American Civil
Rights League organized protests, because it felt that the film would only reinforce the Italian
equals mobster stereotype. And, to some extent, of course, it did (Gambino). Approximately

George Babbitt s Characters And Conformist Social Roles
Secondly, the characters experience conformist social roles. George Babbitt conforms to the
social role of being a father and husband. In Babbitt s society it is expected for men to be the bread
winner of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is
experiencing the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he
can be. George is out of lovewith his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he
did not even love her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest
and a good wife (Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or
that they felt obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them.
Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of
George leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. Hence, he is
out of love it leads him to temptation. Babbitt imagines a fairy child (Lewis 5). He uses the fairy
child as his escape form reality. He knows he cannot morally cheat on his wife, therefore he
imagines a life without her with other women. The first woman he imagines being with is McGoun
(describe her from the book). The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her
from the book). The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his
wife could be like, McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none
of these things. Myra has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads
magazine, her children do not pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is
going through struggle of being faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social
role is his playing is such a burden on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what
people think of his scandalous ways. While he is having this newfound revolution, Myra is also
having her own revolution. She becomes more lively and appears younger and George falls in love
with her again. George discovers that he is allowed to have his type of fun without his wife but
also be able to take care and love Myra which is social role as a

Evolution of Women in the Military
The Evolution of Women in the Military
Abstract
Women are without doubt an integral part of the military services. It took the determination of
women throughout history to pave the way for the 400,000, women that serve today. From the early
years of the military to the present conflict in Afghanistan, women have made continuous progress
towards equality. It is through their contributions that the military has evolved, consistently opening
more jobs to women in combat. Time has proven that war does not discriminate; a successful
military uses the strengths of all members despite their gender.

The Navy and Marines were the first to enlist women ignoring red tape from congress. The Navy
enlisted over 12,000 Yeomen and 1,500 nurses and the Marines enlisted over 300 women in the
reserves as telephone operators and clerks. The Army unofficially enlisted over 21,000 nurses as
contract workers and volunteers. The Army Signal Corp trained over 300 bilingual telephone
operators and stenographers. At the end of the war, the military did not recognize women for their
service or consider them Veterans. For example, the telephone operators left the military with little
appreciation, receiving no ceremonies and no formal discharge or benefits. These women
performed duties no less important than the men did and the mission would have failed without
them, yet the military was able to dismiss them with no concern for their contributions. In 1979, the
Army reviewed the women s service and determined that they performed duties as any other Soldier
had. They gave them full recognition; unfortunately, for many it was too late, they passed away
never receiving the title of Veteran.
As women volunteered for service for a resistant military, compared to the many men that the
government drafted it was clear the military did not appreciate their commitment, sacrifices and
value the worth of women. This was evident by the Army Reorganization Act in 1920, which
granted military nurses relative rank of an officer, not receiving the same pay, benefits, and
privileges

Ginger, a young and talented girl, grew up to be a famous and one of the highest paid stars in
Hollywood, America s most famous city for acting. Ginger grew up to be a very successful

Plato s Allegory Of The Republic Essay
Plato (429 B.C 347 B.C) was a philosopher as well as a mathematician. He is considered to be the
most influential figure in the development of philosophy in Western literary tradition. As an
Athenian citizen he was so self conscious about how philosophy should be conceived, he raises
questions about political events and intellectual movements around his time. The period from 387
B.C to 361 B.C is often called Platos middle or transitional period and reveal Plato s method of

Justification Of Moral Obligation On The Suffering Of...
What reasons might someone give for caring more about the suffering of people close by than that
of those far away? Do these reasons give moral justification for this stance?
The question that will be answered within this essay asks why, if justifiable, someone might give
preferential care to the suffering of a collective group what are within closer distance than a
collective who may be a large distance away. In this essay, I will offer some reasons for why this
might be, and attempt to find reason to justify them with reference to external material which tries
to find reason and argument about whether this stance can be morally accepted among applied
ethical issues. This essay will be split into two main parts, consisting of two intertwining reasons
followed by my reasoning for justification of this moral stance. I will argue that regardless of moral
obligation I believe that we are more justified to care for people closer by, this will be the primary
argument of this essay.
A reason one might give to only helping someone close, with my assumption that close means
people within the same society or social contract as the person rescuing, is that as agents within this
contract, we have negative rights. Negative rights are liberties that one has, meaning that they are
not obligated, but freely allowed to do something within reason. We could void these negative
rights if we believe they will benefit our society or community, and should be influenced to do so,

Why School Should Be A Place For Children
It is common knowledge that children s school performance, including scores on standardized tests
of academic achievement, is associated with their family background, particularly race, ethnicity,
and socioeconomic status. Most Americans believe that schools are places where social inequalities
should be equalized, where the advantages or disadvantages that children experience in their homes
and families should not determine what happens to them in school. It is believed that school should
be a place where children should have equal chances to make the most of their potential. While it is
said that educationbegins in the home; children in upper middle class housings have more
opportunity to learn before the onset of school, while working class parents have fewer resources to
provide their children with a jump start on education. According to online sources, Stratification
between schools, or school level stratification, separates students into facilities with different
curricula, standards or resources. Implicit stratification results from non academic factors, such as
the community, poverty, or tax base. Explicit stratification separates students on purpose, creating
specialty schools to cater to specific skills. Stratification within schools, is known as tracking,
streaming or grouping. This way of schooling separates students into different courses of varying
standards. Placement of students in specific courses is based primarily on perceived academic

Metastasis Term Paper
Metastasis is a hallmark of caner and leading to reduced survival rates of cancer patients. The
ability of a cancer cell to undergo migration and invasion allows it to change position within the
tissues. Metastasis consists of five steps which are termed the metastatic cascade (Fig. 1). These
five steps of cascade are invasion and migration, intravastion, circulation, extravasation,
Colonization, proliferation and angiogenesis. Various cellular processes like de regulated cell
growth, loss of cell cell adhesion, migration through the underlying interstitial stroma, altered
survival signaling which support metastatic spread, therapy resistance and unrestricted tumor

The factors limiting the growth of malignant neoplasm include the basal membrane and various
components of the surrounding stroma, increased interstitial pressure, limited oxygen supply to
tumor cells and the formation of active oxygen forms, hypoxia conditions, and permanent exposure
to immune system cells. Given the intra tumoral heterogeneity, in the struggle for survival, some
tumor cells may be subjected to regression and death, while other cells, which resist powerful,
counteracting micro environmental factors, gain an aggressive phenotype and the ability of
metastatic progression. Invasive tumor growth is enabled by the detachment of malignant cells
from the tumor mass due to a reduction in or complete loss of intercellular adhesion molecules,

The Delays Involved with Commercial Disputes in New York, NY
Commercial disputes in New York, New York often take much longer to resolve than the parties
anticipate. Due to a number of factors, commercial disputes in New York, New York, may linger in
the court system for years. Because these cases may take so long to resolve, many parties have
turned to mediation to more quickly finalize these cases.
Many commercial disputes involve a number of parties, many of whom may not be known at the
time of the dispute. Tracking down all of the parties in a commercial dispute may take several
weeks, and ensuring that they are named properly in court documents takes additional time.
Similarly, many of these parties may be difficult to locate after a lawsuit has been filed. Why does
this matter? A defendant must not only be named properly in a lawsuit, but also must be served
with notice of the lawsuit. If a defendant is particularly difficult to locate or serve, it will delay
progress in the case.
When several parties are involved in a commercial dispute, coordinating communication between
them is often difficult. As the case progresses, it may take months to schedule depositions of the
parties and their witnesses, as the schedules of the individuals being deposed, as well as the
schedules of the parties attorneys,

Objectives And Objectives Of Strategic Management
Strategic Management is a substantial wing of the management system of an organisation or
company whereby a set of managerial decision and action helps to determine the long run
performance and major goals of the organisation or company. Generally, top level management of
an organisation is responsible for the initiation and implementation of such decisions and actions
based on the available resources and welcoming environment. The strategies involve the formulation
and setting of directions, aims and objectives; improving organisational performance; collaborating
and executing changes; developing and training the employees etc. It also stresses on the
monitoring and evaluation of internal strengths and weaknesses and identifying external
opportunities (Adair 2009).
On the other hand, leadership is a process whereby a person works through a chain of frequentative
action by forming a vision, crafting a set of goals and objectives, setting directions and selecting
employees, performing required tasks as long as needed until the goals and objectives are
achieved. In order to be a good leader, an individual needs to be diligent, vigilant and resilient in
all aspects of policy and strategy making for any specific situation arising with the organization
(Atreya 2013).
According to Atreya (2013) Strategic management is about setting vision, mission, goals and
objectives for achieving excellence and the strategic leadership is to ensure that the results are being
achieved.

Congenital Pulmonary Lymphangiectasis is a developmental disorder caused by abnormally dilated
lymphatic vessels within the lung tissue. Congenital Pulmonary Lymphangiectasis is divided into
two classifications; primary and secondary. Primary Congenital Pulmonary Lymphangiectasis refers
to a problem that occurred in development of the fetal lungs.
In order to understand the significance of abnormal, we must first understand normal. Normal
development of the lungs begins on day 26 of gestation and continues until term in five stages. It s
important to note that the stages are not concretely consecutive, because the second stage actually
begins before the first one is complete. The first stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chyle is a fatty fluid absorbed into the lymphatics from the digestive system. It s accumulation in
the pleural cavity leads to a chylous pleural effusion. The pleural effusion reduces the ability of the
lungs to expand and therefore reduce the amount of oxygen than can be taken in. This leads us to
the tachypnea. Tachypnea is an abnormal increase in respiratory rate. Low arterial oxygen
concentration can lead to increased respiratory rate by stimulation of chemoreceptors. The
mechanism not definite, but it s believed that low oxygen is detected by glomus cells with in the
carotid or aortic bodies and causes stimulation of the nerve endings because these so called glomus
cells of oxygen sensitive potassium channels that become inactivated the blood oxygen levels
decrease. There is a strong stimulation of the chemoreceptors which in turn increase respiratory rate.
Another reason for increase is respiratory rate could be the acidosis that occurs as a symptom for
this disease. The acidosis is more specifically known as respiratory acidosis because it is caused
by the accumulation of carbon dioxide which is essentially trapped or not given adequate means of
escape due to decreased lung function. The decreased blood pH also indicates an increase in
hydrogen ion concentration. This increase in hydrogen ion concentration or the increase in carbon
dioxide concentration excites the

Hematoma Research Paper
Choice A is the best answer. All of the choices are complications of parathyroid surgery. The
development of an expanding hematoma in the pretracheal space has the highest mortality in
postoperative patients if left untreated as it compresses the airway. This complication must be
recognized and treated immediately by opening the wound and evacuating the hematoma. If
untreated, the hematoma may progress rapidly, causing airway obstruction. In contrast, most small
hematomas do not require treatment[1].
Choice B is not the best answer. After a 4 parathyroid gland exploration, calcium levels must be
monitored postoperatively every 12 hours until stabilization. The nadir of serum calcium usually
occurs 24 72 hours postoperatively. Many patients become hypocalcemic, but few become
symptomatic. Treatment is reserved for patients with severe hypocalcemia or in patients who ...

If hypoparathyroidism persists after surgery, oral supplementation with calcium and vitamin D is
required. Calcium citrate or calcium carbonate may be started at 2 tablets, 4 times per day. Some
patients require substantially more. Calcitriol is started at 0.5 mcg twice daily and increased as
required. Patients in whom total parathyroidectomy and auto transplantation is performed, they can
be expected to require only temporary calcium supplementation[1].
Choice D is not the best answer. If a recurrent laryngeal nerve is transected during
parathyroidectomy, immediate repair is indicated. Damage to the external branch of the superior
laryngeal nerve can cause the patient to lose the ability to sing, shout or project their voice. If the
recurrent nerve is unknowingly injured intraoperatively, but dysfunction is suggested because the
patient has developed new hoarseness, expectant management is chosen initially since most patients
recover nerve function over a few weeks to months. Laryngoscopy is indicated to document both
dysfunction and recovery of

Literacy, Schooling and Revolution, by Colin Lankshear Essay
Let us attempt to understand Lankshear s argument. My interpretation of Lankshear s position is
that he supports the idea of literacy as being best understood as a concept which comes into affect
by its application in day to day life. I further assess his statement as literacy being also considered
as the formation of ideas which forms the uses of literacyas well as creating an image to convey its
use (Lankshear, 1987, p.50). The uses of literacy may be to communicate with one another or to
participate in society by working, or to help others in need. Without the idea one can not put
literacy into use. Such ideas must make known their use, they do so by reflecting this use to the...

Thus, a literate person has more and better opportunities than the one who isn t literate. Literacy
produces good results and importance to the literate person as well as precious and valued qualities
for him/her, the illiterate person gets none of these (Lankshear, 1987, P.39).
Lankshear states a minimum of three similar misconceptions within the above views. He begins
with the concept that literacy is unitary that is it is a single thing , that is it is the same for
everyone (Lankshear,1987, p.39). He explains that literate people share (regardless of
differences in their levels of literacy) their possession of literacy, where as what illiterate people
have in common is that they don t have literacy or they have so little of it that it is regarded as
negligible (Lankshear, 1987, p.39). In this perspective literacy is seen as a technology or
otherwise seen as the ability to employ the technology of print (Lankshear, 1987, p.39).
Lankshear s second description of misconception is that literacy is a neutral process or tool, this
is believed to be so due to the tendency to consider literacy to be a skill/technology. It is
considered to be neutral in the sense that it is unattached from and not influenced by the concepts
of power (Lankshear, 1987, p.40). Lankshear argues that for those who agree to literacy being
neutral, its use is differentiated from the term literacy itself

Rational Choice Theory Of Rape
Rape is a crime that Americans hear very little about, yet everyone knows that such acts occur
frequently. Rape is a very personal form of violence that continuously impacts the victim for years
after it occurs, if not for the rest of the victim s life. The effects of rape, short term and long term,
can be catastrophic for the victim, causing them physical and psychological damage (Gluck, 2016).
I believe that by using the Rational Choice Theory, rapecan be eliminated in today s society by the
use of castration as a punishment for offenders and as a deterrence for possible future offenders.
Rape has been an ongoing issue within society for centuries. In early times, men raped women for
reproductive purposes. Today, it is still believed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Literature Review
Russell (1997) informs that there are two forms of castration: chemical and surgical. According
to Chism (2013), the oldest and most effective approach to controlling deviant sexual urges and
reducing recidivism rates of male sex offenders is surgical castration. This is partially backed up
by the data given by McMillian (2014), who composed a study of 104 men, revealing the
recidivism rate as 3% for those who had been castrated compared to 45% with those who had not.
Cauley (2014) identified cases where surgical castration has been used nationally and in the United
States, showing that castration is quite effective.
Lee, Kang, Ji, Baeck, Lee, Oh (2013) informs that in Korea, a chemical castration law was passed in
2011, which targets child molesters who have reoffended. The law is intended to prevent offending
and rehabilitate offenders. Decisions to commit crimes such as rape or other sexually motivated
offenses, are often made under the influence of visceral feelings such as anger or sexual arousal, as
stated by Loewenstein, Nagin, and Paternoster (2010); rational choice models of decision making
assume that individuals can anticipate, in an unaroused state, their responses to such instinctual
feelings.
Discussion
In the United States, required surgical or chemical castration is something that is not really
considered as a form of punishment or a method of rehabilitation for sexual offenders. The reason

Abraham Lincoln And The Civil War Essay
Introduction
The Civil War was a war between the union, and confederate states in the United States that
occurred from 1861 1865. Many people believed that the Civil War was about slavery and
southern states right to defend their states rights. The confederates were fighting for their liberty
and independence under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, who they felt was a tyrant. However,
the union, was fighting to preserve their territory, that was created by their founding fathers from
chaos and dismemberment. President Jefferson Davis believed that the civil war was based on the
confederate rights to secede from the union. Jefferson also felt that Abraham Lincoln was to
blamed for the start of the civil war, since he was against slavery. Lincoln s intended goal was to
preserve the union, he claimed slavery was not the reason. If I could save the union without
freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all slaves I would do it, and if I
could slave it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that (Shi Tindall, 2015,
pg.465) . Lincoln told everyone that if the southern states were to return to the union that slavery
would still exist. However, many people believed that Lincoln wasn t being truthful.
Geographical Regions
During this time frame The United States consisted of three geographic regions, the north, south,
and the west. There was a lot of competition between these regions, the question of whether slavery

Communication Skills Needed Throughout A Child s...
The main form of communication in society is spoken language, supported and enhanced by the
delivery of gestures, facial expressions, body posture and movement (Fellowes Oakley, 2014, pp.
18 19). To be able to understand language a child will first need to understand speech. Both
expressive and receptive oral languageare important for communicationskills needed throughout a
child s schooling (2014, p. 19). Children learn to copy and produce meaningful speech gradually
and decode language used by people around them (2014, p. 20).
Joining both Semiotic systems are ways meanings are communicated between people, and both
spoken and written language are part of one semiotic system (Anstey Bull, cited in Fellowes
Oakley, 2014, p. 19).
Written
Depending on the purpose and audience, written genres can be either expressive/imaginative or
factual (Emmitt, 2010, p. 77). The expressive/imaginative genre delivers feelings in an imaginative
way including journals, poetic literacy and narratives (2010, p. 77). Factual types convey
information through reports, descriptions and textbooks (2010, p. 77). Digital technologies are
changing communication through written language with text messages, emails, Facebook and now
Twitter which has a limited 140 characters per tweet (2010, p. 77). Digital media are returning
language to conversational, interactive, here and now foundations as well as using metaphors,

They were all so helpful to me, and gave me the most amazing stories, I was very touched by
them. The second individual factor I used was I would practice understanding how to hear with
my Cochlear Implant, every day, for about a couple years, until the beeping noise would stop.
The reason for this is because, whenever a deaf person first gets their cochlear implant, all
noises will be beeping. The beeping will eventually stop whenever the cochlea will get used to
hearing with a Cochlear Implant, rather than a hearing aid. I would turn off my hearing aid
every day, and practice listening to people and certain different sounds. When I started doing
this, amazing things happened. I developed into being able to hear with my Cochlear implant so
well, I could hear birds chirping and ocean waves crashing for the first time. Since the Cochlear
Implant turned on, I could hear my father s laugh for the first time, and it took weeks to get used
to it and fully develop on knowing his voice. I feel like as if these factors would be individual
because I was the one that advocated for myself and research some information for my own
benefit. I wanted to learn how to hear with a Cochlear Implant rather quickly, and develop that
activity, so that I could be able to hear much clearer and better.

Montaigne And St. Augustine s Confessions
Montaigne and St. Augustine s views of happiness and the self are both very compelling and
indicative of the times of which they were living. If both Montaigne and St. Augustine were to
converse today, it would be apparent that there would be a bit of clashing between their unique
methods of applying human logic to achieve a higher level of understanding of daily events and the
environment around them. St. Augustine uses a linear, dogmatic technique to emphasize one s sins
while still glorifying God, and Montaigne with a more fluid, skeptical, unbiased approach through
personal reflection. These two distinct ways of perceiving the self and higher order understanding
are apparent in Montaigne s Essays and St. Augustine s narrative Confessions.... Show more content

Augustine was born in northern Africa portion of the Roman Empire in 354, a time of which
Catholicism was not a prominent feature of Roman society and of which had failed to make an
impression on Augustine until he was in his early thirties (45 6 B). He was quite an intellectual
as he became a professor and taught grammar and was well versed in Latin. Augustine s
intelligence is apparent in the systematic progression of his autobiography Confessions as he
looks back at his past self from a child to an adult in his upper forties with a new higher order
perception of the self. Augustine uses God as a method of conversion from egocentricity to a
more God central view in his depiction of reasonless theft simply because I loved the evil in me
(52 B) and further shows the transition in his thinking by his realization that the pears we stole
were beautiful for they were created by Thee, Thou most Beautiful of all (53 B). By writing as a
new person looking at their past self that was susceptible to lust, theft, and all kinds of sins,
Augustine is able to convey the idea that the self is able to change at a fixed moment, and that the
defining point of the self is the memory and grace

Universal Health Care System
Health care is one of the most important systems in this world. With insurance you are most
likely to receie health care and have a better health status. Uninsured people are less likely to
receive medical care and more likely to have poor health status. When you dont have insurance
you are most likely to pay a lot more money for health care but if you have insurance they are
most likely to cover the whole payment or most of the bill. A universal health care system would
bring costs down and increase access to care.
In 2005, 45 milion Americans lacked insurance which is over 15% of the population. America
needs to get a universal healthcare system because health care is a right that people deserve but
too few people have. The younger generations who are barely getting there first jobs, most of
them dont have insurance which isnt good because not all jobs have insurance benefits included
and people cant afford to get insurance, go to work, school and pay bills at there young age with

The Five Phases Of Sleep And Its Effects On The Brain
Dreams tend to feel like they are never ending and go on for hours, but in reality dreams only
last just a few minutes. Americans who do not know the phases of sleep get confused at the fact
that dreams only last a couple minutes. There are five stages of sleep and the fifth stage is
where most dreams occur. Stage five is also called REM, rapid eye movement, stage (Owen 1 2).
During sleep stage five, breathing becomes more rapid, eyes jerk rapidly in various directions,
and limbs become temporarily paralyzed. Also, the electrical activity of the brain in REM sleep
almost exactly mimics the way the brain acts when it is awake (Owen 1 2). The biggest difference

The French Revolution And Its Effect On British Political...
What, if anything, was achieved by extra parliamentary protest in the years 1790 1819?
Radicalism was alive in Britain from the late eighteenth century, yet Parliament resolutely refused to
reform itself until the late 1830s. It is therefore tempting to dismiss extra parliamentary protest
during this period as having failed to bring about any substantial reform in the face of Government
repression.
The French Revolution had a dramatic impact on British political life from the onset of its eruption
in 1789.
In November 1790, Edmund Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France . Burke was
not opposed to reform but he defended Britain s existing constitution on the grounds that it had
grown organically out of Britain s unique history. In his book he maintained that government
derived its authority from custom and tradition, not from the consent of the governed. He
celebrated the rule of the monarchy and aristocracy, feeling that moderate reform would lead to
violent revolution similar to that in France and so the system had to be defended to protect it from
destruction.
On the other hand, many people were excited by the events taking place in France. By far the most
influential response to Burke s book was Thomas Paine s The Rights of Man (first published in
1791) in which he laid out the ideological basis for republican reform. In the first volume he
applauded the changes in France and dismissed Burke s insistence on the need to follow tradition,

After some struggle, the idea for Lie of Pi came to Martel. His second novel was published in 2001.

In the novel, the protagonist, Piscine, is characterized as an excitable child, dependent on his

The Limitations Of Standardized Testing Essay
The limitations of standardized testing as a rigid and narrow criterion for gauging the educational
capabilities of students in public education. The criterion for standardized testing relies on narrow
areas of knowledge that define a hierarchical imposition of intelligence testing that forces the
student to perform ion a constrained academic environment. This type of testing has become a
mechanized tool to reject the individual needs of the student in a linear testing methodology. The
importance of a more diversified and individual style of educationmust address the talents of the
student in relation to a broader system of education. Therefore, the problem of one size fits all in
standardized testing forces the student to take a test that generalizes educational standards in the
public school system. In essence, an analysis of the individual needs of the student define the
problem of a one size fits all system of standardize testing in modern American school system. The
problem of standardized testing in the American public system is founded on the systemic
generalization of student s intelligence. These tests are often engineered to the student through an
uncreative and linear evaluation of their knowledge base. In this manner, standardized testing only
measures a small range of cognitive and mental capabilities of the student, which often focus on
writing, reading, math, and the sciences: The obsession with raising student standardized testscores

Walden And Transcendentalism
Indeed, Henry David Thoreau s Walden is considered to be a classic in American literature after
analyzing the themes and symbols it is apparent why this novel is so popular. My research of the
novel focuses solely on the key elements to Walden. Which are transcendentalism and the
symbolism constantly being repeated throughout the work. Specifically my research covers
Thoreau s cabin, transcendentalism, and other symbolic references. Consequently, Thoreau s cabin
is considered to be sacred ground amongst transcendentalists. The cabin is so sacred to them that
they kept it around as a landmark. The cabin is a popular vacation spot for visitors, it is on exhibit

Thoreau s fascination with the ice industry is acute. He describes in detail the Irish icemen who
arrive from Cambridge to cut, block, and haul away 10,000 tons of ice for use in city homes and
fancy hotels. The ice cutters are the only group of people ever said to arrive at Walden Pond as
one. They unavoidably represent society in miniature, with all the calculating abuse and terribly
unfair treatments that Thoreau sees in the world at large. So, the labor of the icemen on Walden
becomes a symbolic example of theargument of society and nature. Seemingly it would appear that
society gets the upper hand, as the frozen pond is chopped up, deformed, and destroy ten thousand
tons of its contents. But nature triumphs in the end, since less than twenty five percent of the ice
ever reaches its destination, the rest melting and disappearing on the way and making its way back
to Walden Pond. With this analysis, Thoreau hints that humankind s efforts to fully use (for profit)
nature are without success (or without purpose), since nature regenerates itself on a far greater
scale than humans could ever hope to affect, much less threaten. The icemen s mistreatment of
Walden contrasts sharply with Thoreau s less money based, morepoem related use of it. In
describing the rare magical and mysterious blue of

Colonisation definition
The New Zealand Oxford dictionary (2005) defines colonisation as establishing a colony or
colonies in a country or area (p. 215). That means a group of people invading and fully forming a
community in a new country or an area. In New Zealand, colonisation was the process of British
migrants settling down in the country and building a government after the signing the Treaty of

retained the power to manage their own affairs. Maori had big expectations of the treaty, they
hoped there would be a sharing of authority and the country would be protected from other foreign
powers.
Treaty of Waitangi Settlement Process (1999) points out that in reality, when New Zealand
became a colony of the British the treaty was practically ignored, and there was expropriation of
land and the culture of the native people was disregarded. Many British migrants came to New
Zealand after the treaty was signed and the government took land from Maori for British settler
families to live on. Maori had no power to manage their own land once the British government
took over. Waitangi Tribunal (2011) states, ...the Government took far more land than it said it
would take (para. 4). Maori lost much of the land that they had owned for years.
After the Treaty of Waitangi, British (non Maori) become powerful throughout the country and
Maori become powerless. New Zealand in History (2000)

Occupational Therapy Theory Paper
Theories are essential in occupational therapy (OT) practice as they provide a conceptual
foundation and framework for enhancing growth of clients, justifying reimbursement for care, and
validating intervention applications to family and patients (Baum, Bass, Christiansen, 2015).
Theories provide knowledge and an explanationfor how and why certain interventions would be
more beneficial than others. Theories can be used to support the understanding of a client s
symptoms and environmental impacts. The theories used in OT can be classified as models, frames
of reference, or paradigms (Baum, Bass, et al., 2015). After visiting Paxton Ministries and
interacting with several residents, I identified the following theories, models, and perspectives...

Plagiarism Is More Effective Than Just Punishing Students
Later Draft
Scott Jaschik discusses various situations of plagiarism in college in his article, Winning Hearts
and Minds in War on Plagiarism, in order to argue that there are more efficient solutions to prevent
plagiarism. Jaschik published this article in Inside Higher Ed, which is an online news source, that
he cofounded, targeting first year English and college writing instructors. In the article, he explores
different ways of preventing plagiarism and emphasizes the importance of academic integrity. By
drawing on different instructor perspectives, he employs various situations such as an online
student discussion board and an assignment to purposely plagiarize in order to highlight common
issues with why students plagiarize. Jaschik ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there still was some unintentional plagiarizing, the open minded conversation between
Hagopian and her students was more beneficial and effective for the students because it taught them
the, difference between deliberate fraud and failed apprenticeship (Jaschik 262). This example
strengthens
Jaschik s idea by specifically illustrating how first year writing instructors being more open minded
towards plagiarism can be more beneficial for the students. Jaschik also describes another example
with Roy Stamper, an associate writing director, who followed an online student discussion board
where students discussed how they felt about plagiarizing which led
Stamper to discover that there was also a strong, intense reaction from other students much of it
critical (263). Jaschik uses this to illustrate how his lurking online raised many questions and
whether, an intense workload puts an emphasis for students on efficiency as opposed to quality
(263 4). This example also strengthens Jaschik s argument in that it appeals to the first year writing
instructors by giving insight on various students opinions on plagiarizing. This is effective to the
instructors because it allows them to learn some reasons why students plagiarize, such as being
overloaded and not having enough time. Even Stamper himself asks, Should writing instructors be

Influence Of Parenting Styles And Practices Globally
Numerous factors have been studied to account for different parenting styles and practices globally.
The attitude and response of parents to various parenting practices is based on the knowledge or
information they are exposed to or available to them. This study intends to examine the influence of
education on parents involvement in raising their children especially outside of school. Quantitative
method will be utilized based on the secondary data from national survey of parents.

2008).
Research on parenting also has shown that parent education is related to a warm, social climate in
the home. Shumow and Miller (2001) described parental home involvement as those conversations
between parent and child that focused on school experiences, while school involvement was
conceptualized as parents availability for contact with the school. Epstein and Sanders (2002)
looked at both direct behaviors, such as attending parent teacher conferences, and indirect behaviors,
such as sharing educational expectations with the child. Research indicates that home involvement
had greater impact on academic achievement (VanVoorhis, 2003), while regular parent child
discussions about school and expectations had the greatest impact on educational outcomes of
adolescents, including truancy and dropping out (McNeal, 1999). Klebanov et al. (1994) found that
both mothers education and family income were important predictors of the physical environment
and learning experiences in the home but that mothers education alone was predictive of parental
warmth. Although parental involvement is an important contributor to children s positive school
outcomes, much less is known about the factors that motivate parents involvement practices.
Avvisati et al. (2010) opined that due to recent local and national reforms, parent s behavior and

The Conflict Between Christian Faith And Those Of Islamic...
As a global collective, the human past is purely one of conflict. Power struggles are widespread
and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self
versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First
Crusades. At face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those
of Christian faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one
of these observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both
sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to
support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising
amount of divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self
and the other present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic,
yet necessary division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds
of any collective. One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic
nature of its idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusadehad an undeniable
loyalty to God. In an effort seemingly meant to cultivate more glory, some saw it fitting to
sacrifice established intercommunity bonds for the sake of peer provided glory. The glory

The Opium Wars
The Opium Wars
The two Opium Wars, which took place from 1839 1860, were the starting point of modern Chinese
history. To start off, the First Opium War was a major turning point for modern chinese history.
Secondly, during the wars many treaties were signed to try and create peace. Finally, without these
events, China would not be the major world power that it is today. Therefore, the Opium Warswere
the most important part of modern world history because they changed and created the foundation
of China. There are many reasons why the first Opium Warwas significant, but one of the main
points is that it was the beginning of modern Chinese history. To start off, before the first war
even took place, the Qing government was shut off from the world. Their economy was poor
and it wasn t improving. During this time period, Britain didn t have enough silver to trade for
Chinese tea. To solve this problem, they began to illegally ship opium, a substance used for pain
relief, to China for silver. As this went on, the Qing government decided that they weren t going
to allow opium to poison their people. Wanting to solve this problem, the Tao Kuang emperor
ordered his governor general, Lin Tse hsu, to get rid of the opium trade. Following orders, Lin Tse
hsu destroyed 19,187 boxes and 2119 bags of opium in three days (Huang). This event was known
as the Destruction of opium at Humen . With this act of destruction the British became very

Fashion or Textile Designers and History
To what extent have fashion/textile designers working over the last thirty years used historical
sources to inform their practice?
History offers invaluable inspiration for contemporary designers, helping to develop and inform
ideas. Exploration of history creates a context to work within and build concepts from, helping to
add value and vigour. In this essay I will explore and explain how designers have used the past to
inform their work, whether an expression of political, social, or traditional opinions. I will
particularly focus on Alexander McQueen s political approach, and how he addresses his ancestral
history. I will also look at Vivienne Westwoods work and how it challenges but also commemorates
tradition. Next, I will study Cath Kidston s play on vintage and how she evokes nostalgia.
Vivienne Westwood
Westwood s epoch began all about rebellion and confrontation. Along with her partner Malcolm
McLaren, they opened their first shop Let it Rock in 1971 (Price 2014), in which they made and
sold Teddy boy style clothes a rebellion against the popular hippie fashion that lingered on from the
late sixties. We can see her use of historical inspiration, using the rock and roll character to oppose
the carefree, light hearted hippie influence. In a time of recession and mass youth unemployment,
she used her divergent rock fashions to prompt the younger generations to challenge blithe fashions
and confront politics and the hypocrisy of British tradition and good

West Transformation In The Late Nineteenth Century
3. How and why was the West transformed in the late nineteenth century? How did these changes
affect the people living in the West? How did the changes in the West transform America? In the
late nineteenth century, the rise of an industrial America took the country by storm. New
innovations, and the development of steel manufacturing, petroleum refining, and the expansion of
railroads, changed the nation s economy and the lifestyle of the people. The names of Andrew
Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan became widely known. This industrial boom
introduced a new class of wealthy industrialist and a well off middle class. Unfortunately, farmers

Indeed, the stock market crash triggered this event, however the vastly poor distribution of
wealth, the wages of industrial workers, and the profitless work of farmers all added up to this
downfall. In addition, high tariffs set by the U.S. made it difficult for foreign nations to sell
goods to them and to buy goods in return. And to make things better, banks were failing and in
result wiping out life savings of hundreds of people. The last straw was drawn when the stock
market hesitated and investors began to sell their stocks for fear of what could happen. Brokers
jammed the stocks as they attempted to unload shares. This grave dip became a panic that
would be known as black Thursday. The following Tuesday all stocks had lost six sevenths of
their value, and it would be appropriately called black Tuesday. With thousands of people s life
savings gone overnight, the economy suffered immensely. Due to the lack of money people
began to stop buying goods. To make up for the lack of revenue, businesses laid off countless
workers to decrease the price of their outputs. This only furthered the issue into a never ending
cycle. People now without jobs could not afford goods, and businesses continued to lay off its
workers to stay profitable. Millions of Americans lived in poverty at this time, many unable to buy

Analysis Of This Is A White Man s Government ``
The Civil War, in term of the modern mind, was a war that divided the nation, yet was able to
free the slaves. The idea that such a bloody war was able to liberate a group of oppressed was
enough to justify the deaths of many Americans; yet when analyzing the lives of these so called
freed people it becomes apparent that they were not freed. The ideology of the Lost Cause
allowed for the creation of resentment towards blacks. From this hate an unholy trinity of white
men with different backgrounds came united and threated to destroy the idea of a democratic
America. Thomas Nast s satirical drawing, titled This is a White Man s Government displays the
possible destruction of America by this unholy trinity in an effort to maintain the pre Civil War
hierarchy. The focal point of the published image is the three piled hands of the men, representing
the unity that they formed in order to maintain control over a democratic America. When the
viewer looks at the sketch, their eyes focus directly onto the pile of hands in the center. This
gesture assures the audience of a commitment and pact established by these men. Nast is able to
address the unspoken agreement between these men with the placement of their feet. Their feet
give a name to their agreement as they hold hands as they stomp on a black war veteran. The
placement of legs in the drawing, This is a White Man s Government , continues to imply that the
forces of the trinity are meant to continue the oppression of

Qualities of an Effective Teacher
What it means to be an effective teacher
Introduction
An effective teacher is someone who increases the understanding of a pupil. Effective teaching is
the ability of providing instructions to students of varying abilities while incorporating instructional
objectives and assessing the effective education form of students. In the evaluation of performance,
efficiency on the lesson plan and technique of delivery forms form part of the criteria taken into
consideration. The teacher s practices that ensure the higher level of assessment and active
participation are most successful. This outdo all the factors, such as size of the class,
socioeconomic conditions and gender (Sullivan 2001). The most significant aspect that gears a
student to perform well is the teachers details of classroom practices as demonstrated in one of the
video links Pre primary: Science Mini Beasts . They must have sufficient familiarity with the
techniques and methods associated with their career and must certify that the pupil learning must
develop over the course of the year (Sullivan 2001). Majorly presumed methods of quantifying
teacher effectiveness include pupils work, teacher s assessments, and lesson plans. An effective
teacher employs creativity in the classroom. It is both necessary to the student and teacher.
Creativity involves qualities like imagination, originality, and self expression. The teacher should
encourage the use of imagination as implied in the video footage. Imagination

  • 2. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Outdoor Cat How many times have you seen a cat wandering outside alone, you thinks it s a stray but at closer glance it has a collar, but why is it out there. On the loose? Just because it wants too? Outdoor cats are at a higher risk of being hurt, getting lost and turmoil in neighbourhoods. An indoor cat is protected by it s family and the house walls, but owners who let their catout can find them self in a dilemma. These catscan get taken, attacked or become lost. Outdoor cats can end up in neighbourhoods where there are rude people or other animals. There is always a risk when going outdoors, but does it increase for your pet? A cat s claw is as sharp as a chef s knife and it could really hurt you, animals or itself. Cats are very territorial animals, they don t like when they see other cats. An outdoor cat could come across another cat who isn t so friendly. I personally have had this happen. My cat is an indoor cat, and even though he doesn t go outside too often he is very territorial. There is this cat who comes around and jumps up to the window ledge to play we don t know if that is his intentions or he wants to fight. On the insde my cat is running back and forth, attacking the window trying to get to him. These events create a lot of stress and anxiety on my cat. It s not just other cats are the problem it is also other animals. Outdoor cats could attack other animals such as dogs, skunks, and so on. • 3. Understanding Memes In Human Genes Understanding Memes Genes are the genetic code that allows us to pass down and spread our traits and DNA to our descendants. It is constantly changing as we adapt and multiply our species, inheriting and letting go of certain traits to implement into the next person. Much like these genes, memes are also the sort of code that humans use to link our ideas to each other. A memecan be an idea, an image, a sound, a phrase, or any combination of these. Their means of transportation along our web of knowledge is (or forms of) language. Before modern language, it was hard to demonstrate abstract ideas and pass them down to the next generation, but now, it is commonplace. Where did the term meme originate from? The history of the term meme is fairly recent, but from the point of view modern society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now while this may be true of the meme modified specifically for that purpose, its origins were not fueled by any sort of hate or racism. This is a prime example of how the mutation of memes can be suited and selected for purposes, much like how animals inherit certain genes to help them adapt to a specific environment. People with common interests or opinions can take a common idea, and adapt or twist it to make it suit their purposes, making the idea itself take on a biased view among others unaware of the original intent of said idea. While not common amongst political and corporate organizations, the modification and adaptation of memes has been a way to express personal thoughts in a way others can relate for quite some time within certain internet communities. Memes don t typically come about for specialized purposes, but they can inherit traits to end up doing exactly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Impossibility Of Imprisoning The Mind To Althea, from Prison : Richard Lovelace (Close read) Lovelace s poem To Althea, from Prison expresses two concepts: the impossibility of imprisoning the mind and therefore the impossibility of repressing one s belief in a cause, or in this case, a person. The initial lack of explicitness of the meaning of the poem is exemplified by the mysteriousness of the woman, Althea, who is rather unspecific in description, and ethereal, described as divine. Whether or not the woman was real, or herself imaginary is unimportant to the poem, which is all about the lack of division between true reality and reality of the mind. The juxtaposition between the body and the mind reflects the same conflict within Lovelace himself, and in fact all Cavalier poets: the altogether real matters of war and politics and the expression of poetry and imagination. It is interesting that while the speaker is writing of freedom and the indomitability of the mind, he describes himself as being tangled to Althea s hair and fetter d to her eye. This is language undoubtedly of constraint, and seems to work in contention with the what in fact the speaker is expressing; in fact, Lovelace is trying to express that even behind bars, and tangled and fetter d in his own mind s eye, he is still freer than the birds he evokes. This nature imagery appears in the first three stanzas of the poem, as does the ending line of know no such liberty, this repetition of imagery, as well as the repetition of ... • 5. The Godfather Sociology The Godfather is an interesting and moving film with everything from family disputes to organized criminal activity. This movie is rated R and should be seen in the absence of children. The Godfather shows how close organized crime families are and they would do anything to protect them. This movie takes place in the 40 s and 50 s in New York. Marlon Brando portrays Vito Corleone, also known as the Godfather. Al Pacino portrays Michael Corleone, Vito s youngest son. The Godfather was inducted to the National Film Registry in 1990 (Library of Congress). In this movie, Coppola showed how, within this family, it was split into two social institutions: crime and regular Italian American family. Whoever the current Godfather is takes extra care... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Michael, being a college, World War II hero, he tests his strength and cunning to avenge his father s near murder. The Corleone family has the drive for revenge, the need for respect and demand for justice. The eldest son, Sonny, (played by James Caan) and Michael had very different views on how the family should be ran. Sonny wanted to get the family out and go after the other families, while Michael wanted to play it low key and continue business how the Godfather would have wanted it. The primary business that the Corleone family was involved in was gambling and unions. Other families felt rejected when Don Vito Corleone declined to enter the drug business saying that it was a dirty business . A man who doesn t spend time with his family can never be called a man (Don Vito Corleone). This line hit home for me because my job keeps me away from my family for 24 hours at a time. This movie also shows how a family of immigrants could create a life in America by creating an empire of crime. Another point this movie proved was that money talks. With money and power, you can get anything you want. During the making of The Godfather, the Italian American Civil Rights League organized protests, because it felt that the film would only reinforce the Italian equals mobster stereotype. And, to some extent, of course, it did (Gambino). Approximately ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. George Babbitt s Characters And Conformist Social Roles Secondly, the characters experience conformist social roles. George Babbitt conforms to the social role of being a father and husband. In Babbitt s society it is expected for men to be the bread winner of the family and also to be faithful to his wife even if they are out of love. Babbitt is experiencing the social stress from conforming to appear the best possible husband and father he can be. George is out of lovewith his wife. He met Myra Babbitt when he was in college and he did not even love her to begin with. He believed he should marry her because she was a honest and a good wife (Lewis 81) material. Most men and women married either married for money or that they felt obligated to marry someone to because it is expected of them. Their marriage grew to become boring which tends to happen in most marriages. Instead of George leaving Myra he stays, because he feels it is his moral obligation to do so. The second woman he imagines being with is Eunice (describe her from the book). The third woman is (look her up). All these women resemble what he wishes his wife could be like, McGoun is a worker, Eunice is young, and the last one is lively, Myra is none of these things. Myra has the social life of being a housewife. She plans dinners, she reads magazine, her children do not pay attention, and her husband does not love her. While George is going through struggle of being faithful, he eventually gives up and cheats on Myra. The social role is his playing is such a burden on him that he cracks under pressure and does not care what people think of his scandalous ways. • 7. Evolution of Women in the Military The Evolution of Women in the Military Abstract Women are without doubt an integral part of the military services. It took the determination of women throughout history to pave the way for the 400,000, women that serve today. From the early years of the military to the present conflict in Afghanistan, women have made continuous progress towards equality. It is through their contributions that the military has evolved, consistently opening more jobs to women in combat. Time has proven that war does not discriminate; a successful military uses the strengths of all members despite their gender. The Navy and Marines were the first to enlist women ignoring red tape from congress. The Navy enlisted over 12,000 Yeomen and 1,500 nurses and the Marines enlisted over 300 women in the reserves as telephone operators and clerks. The Army unofficially enlisted over 21,000 nurses as contract workers and volunteers. The Army Signal Corp trained over 300 bilingual telephone operators and stenographers. At the end of the war, the military did not recognize women for their service or consider them Veterans. For example, the telephone operators left the military with little appreciation, receiving no ceremonies and no formal discharge or benefits. These women performed duties no less important than the men did and the mission would have failed without them, yet the military was able to dismiss them with no concern for their contributions. In 1979, the Army reviewed the women s service and determined that they performed duties as any other Soldier had. They gave them full recognition; unfortunately, for many it was too late, they passed away never receiving the title of Veteran. As women volunteered for service for a resistant military, compared to the many men that the government drafted it was clear the military did not appreciate their commitment, sacrifices and value the worth of women. This was evident by the Army Reorganization Act in 1920, which granted military nurses relative rank of an officer, not receiving the same pay, benefits, and privileges ... • 11. Justification Of Moral Obligation On The Suffering Of... What reasons might someone give for caring more about the suffering of people close by than that of those far away? Do these reasons give moral justification for this stance? The question that will be answered within this essay asks why, if justifiable, someone might give preferential care to the suffering of a collective group what are within closer distance than a collective who may be a large distance away. In this essay, I will offer some reasons for why this might be, and attempt to find reason to justify them with reference to external material which tries to find reason and argument about whether this stance can be morally accepted among applied ethical issues. This essay will be split into two main parts, consisting of two intertwining reasons followed by my reasoning for justification of this moral stance. I will argue that regardless of moral obligation I believe that we are more justified to care for people closer by, this will be the primary argument of this essay. A reason one might give to only helping someone close, with my assumption that close means people within the same society or social contract as the person rescuing, is that as agents within this contract, we have negative rights. Negative rights are liberties that one has, meaning that they are not obligated, but freely allowed to do something within reason. We could void these negative rights if we believe they will benefit our society or community, and should be influenced to do so, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Why School Should Be A Place For Children It is common knowledge that children s school performance, including scores on standardized tests of academic achievement, is associated with their family background, particularly race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Most Americans believe that schools are places where social inequalities should be equalized, where the advantages or disadvantages that children experience in their homes and families should not determine what happens to them in school. It is believed that school should be a place where children should have equal chances to make the most of their potential. While it is said that educationbegins in the home; children in upper middle class housings have more opportunity to learn before the onset of school, while working class parents have fewer resources to provide their children with a jump start on education. According to online sources, Stratification between schools, or school level stratification, separates students into facilities with different curricula, standards or resources. Implicit stratification results from non academic factors, such as the community, poverty, or tax base. Explicit stratification separates students on purpose, creating specialty schools to cater to specific skills. Stratification within schools, is known as tracking, streaming or grouping. The ability of a cancer cell to undergo migration and invasion allows it to change position within the tissues. Metastasis consists of five steps which are termed the metastatic cascade (Fig. 1). These five steps of cascade are invasion and migration, intravastion, circulation, extravasation, Colonization, proliferation and angiogenesis. Due to a number of factors, commercial disputes in New York, New York, may linger in the court system for years. Because these cases may take so long to resolve, many parties have turned to mediation to more quickly finalize these cases. Many commercial disputes involve a number of parties, many of whom may not be known at the time of the dispute. Tracking down all of the parties in a commercial dispute may take several weeks, and ensuring that they are named properly in court documents takes additional time. Similarly, many of these parties may be difficult to locate after a lawsuit has been filed. Why does this matter? A defendant must not only be named properly in a lawsuit, but also must be served with notice of the lawsuit. If a defendant is particularly difficult to locate or serve, it will delay progress in the case. When several parties are involved in a commercial dispute, coordinating communication between them is often difficult. The pleural effusion reduces the ability of the lungs to expand and therefore reduce the amount of oxygen than can be taken in. This leads us to the tachypnea. Tachypnea is an abnormal increase in respiratory rate. Low arterial oxygen concentration can lead to increased respiratory rate by stimulation of chemoreceptors. The mechanism not definite, but it s believed that low oxygen is detected by glomus cells with in the carotid or aortic bodies and causes stimulation of the nerve endings because these so called glomus cells of oxygen sensitive potassium channels that become inactivated the blood oxygen levels decrease. There is a strong stimulation of the chemoreceptors which in turn increase respiratory rate. Another reason for increase is respiratory rate could be the acidosis that occurs as a symptom for this disease. The acidosis is more specifically known as respiratory acidosis because it is caused by the accumulation of carbon dioxide which is essentially trapped or not given adequate means of escape due to decreased lung function. • 23. Literacy, Schooling and Revolution, by Colin Lankshear Essay Let us attempt to understand Lankshear s argument. My interpretation of Lankshear s position is that he supports the idea of literacy as being best understood as a concept which comes into affect by its application in day to day life. I further assess his statement as literacy being also considered as the formation of ideas which forms the uses of literacyas well as creating an image to convey its use (Lankshear, 1987, p.50). The uses of literacy may be to communicate with one another or to participate in society by working, or to help others in need. Without the idea one can not put literacy into use. Thus, a literate person has more and better opportunities than the one who isn t literate. Literacy produces good results and importance to the literate person as well as precious and valued qualities for him/her, the illiterate person gets none of these (Lankshear, 1987, P.39). Lankshear states a minimum of three similar misconceptions within the above views. He begins with the concept that literacy is unitary that is it is a single thing , that is it is the same for everyone (Lankshear,1987, p.39). He explains that literate people share (regardless of differences in their levels of literacy) their possession of literacy, where as what illiterate people have in common is that they don t have literacy or they have so little of it that it is regarded as negligible (Lankshear, 1987, p.39). In this perspective literacy is seen as a technology or otherwise seen as the ability to employ the technology of print (Lankshear, 1987, p.39). Lankshear s second description of misconception is that literacy is a neutral process or tool, this is believed to be so due to the tendency to consider literacy to be a skill/technology. It is considered to be neutral in the sense that it is unattached from and not influenced by the concepts of power (Lankshear, 1987, p.40). Lankshear argues that for those who agree to literacy being neutral, its use is differentiated from the term literacy itself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literature Review Russell (1997) informs that there are two forms of castration: chemical and surgical. According to Chism (2013), the oldest and most effective approach to controlling deviant sexual urges and reducing recidivism rates of male sex offenders is surgical castration. This is partially backed up by the data given by McMillian (2014), who composed a study of 104 men, revealing the recidivism rate as 3% for those who had been castrated compared to 45% with those who had not. Cauley (2014) identified cases where surgical castration has been used nationally and in the United States, showing that castration is quite effective. The law is intended to prevent offending and rehabilitate offenders. Decisions to commit crimes such as rape or other sexually motivated offenses, are often made under the influence of visceral feelings such as anger or sexual arousal, as stated by Loewenstein, Nagin, and Paternoster (2010); rational choice models of decision making assume that individuals can anticipate, in an unaroused state, their responses to such instinctual feelings. The confederates were fighting for their liberty and independence under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, who they felt was a tyrant. If both Montaigne and St. Augustine were to converse today, it would be apparent that there would be a bit of clashing between their unique methods of applying human logic to achieve a higher level of understanding of daily events and the environment around them. • 33. The French Revolution And Its Effect On British Political... What, if anything, was achieved by extra parliamentary protest in the years 1790 1819? Radicalism was alive in Britain from the late eighteenth century, yet Parliament resolutely refused to reform itself until the late 1830s. It is therefore tempting to dismiss extra parliamentary protest during this period as having failed to bring about any substantial reform in the face of Government repression. The French Revolution had a dramatic impact on British political life from the onset of its eruption in 1789. In November 1790, Edmund Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France . Burke was not opposed to reform but he defended Britain s existing constitution on the grounds that it had grown organically out of Britain s unique history. In his book he maintained that government derived its authority from custom and tradition, not from the consent of the governed. He celebrated the rule of the monarchy and aristocracy, feeling that moderate reform would lead to violent revolution similar to that in France and so the system had to be defended to protect it from destruction. On the other hand, many people were excited by the events taking place in France. By far the most influential response to Burke s book was Thomas Paine s The Rights of Man (first published in 1791) in which he laid out the ideological basis for republican reform. In the first volume he applauded the changes in France and dismissed Burke s insistence on the need to follow tradition, instead ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. The Limitations Of Standardized Testing Essay The limitations of standardized testing as a rigid and narrow criterion for gauging the educational capabilities of students in public education. The criterion for standardized testing relies on narrow areas of knowledge that define a hierarchical imposition of intelligence testing that forces the student to perform ion a constrained academic environment. This type of testing has become a mechanized tool to reject the individual needs of the student in a linear testing methodology. The importance of a more diversified and individual style of educationmust address the talents of the student in relation to a broader system of education. Therefore, the problem of one size fits all in standardized testing forces the student to take a test that generalizes educational standards in the public school system. In essence, an analysis of the individual needs of the student define the problem of a one size fits all system of standardize testing in modern American school system. The problem of standardized testing in the American public system is founded on the systemic generalization of student s intelligence. These tests are often engineered to the student through an uncreative and linear evaluation of their knowledge base. In this manner, standardized testing only measures a small range of cognitive and mental capabilities of the student, which often focus on writing, reading, math, and the sciences: The obsession with raising student standardized testscores is leading ... He describes in detail the Irish icemen who arrive from Cambridge to cut, block, and haul away 10,000 tons of ice for use in city homes and fancy hotels. The ice cutters are the only group of people ever said to arrive at Walden Pond as one. They unavoidably represent society in miniature, with all the calculating abuse and terribly unfair treatments that Thoreau sees in the world at large. So, the labor of the icemen on Walden becomes a symbolic example of theargument of society and nature. Seemingly it would appear that society gets the upper hand, as the frozen pond is chopped up, deformed, and destroy ten thousand tons of its contents. But nature triumphs in the end, since less than twenty five percent of the ice ever reaches its destination, the rest melting and disappearing on the way and making its way back to Walden Pond. With this analysis, Thoreau hints that humankind s efforts to fully use (for profit) nature are without success (or without purpose), since nature regenerates itself on a far greater scale than humans could ever hope to affect, much less threaten. The icemen s mistreatment of Walden contrasts sharply with Thoreau s less money based, morepoem related use of it. In describing the rare magical and mysterious blue of ... The English text is not an exact translation of the Maori text (para.2). In the Maori version the word sovereignty was translated as kawanatanga (governance). New Zealand History (2011) indicates that Maori believed they had ceded a right of governance over their lands but retained the power to manage their own affairs. Maori had big expectations of the treaty, they hoped there would be a sharing of authority and the country would be protected from other foreign powers. Jaschik also describes another example with Roy Stamper, an associate writing director, who followed an online student discussion board where students discussed how they felt about plagiarizing which led Stamper to discover that there was also a strong, intense reaction from other students much of it critical (263). Shumow and Miller (2001) described parental home involvement as those conversations between parent and child that focused on school experiences, while school involvement was conceptualized as parents availability for contact with the school. Epstein and Sanders (2002) looked at both direct behaviors, such as attending parent teacher conferences, and indirect behaviors, such as sharing educational expectations with the child. Research indicates that home involvement had greater impact on academic achievement (VanVoorhis, 2003), while regular parent child discussions about school and expectations had the greatest impact on educational outcomes of adolescents, including truancy and dropping out (McNeal, 1999). Klebanov et al. Power struggles are widespread and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective. One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic nature of its idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusadehad an undeniable loyalty to God. Finally, without these events, China would not be the major world power that it is today. Therefore, the Opium Warswere the most important part of modern world history because they changed and created the foundation of China. There are many reasons why the first Opium Warwas significant, but one of the main points is that it was the beginning of modern Chinese history. To start off, before the first war even took place, the Qing government was shut off from the world. Their economy was poor and it wasn t improving. During this time period, Britain didn t have enough silver to trade for Chinese tea. To solve this problem, they began to illegally ship opium, a substance used for pain relief, to China for silver.
