Chinese Room Argument
John Searle s Chinese Room Argument against Strong Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a
successful criticism of functionalist theories of mind because it fails to address the rebuttals
formulated for the theory systems presented by Strong AI and functionalism. The paper will discuss
this through the precursor of Functionalism, Token Mind Brain Identity Theory; Turing Test; Searle
s Chinese Room Argument and criticisms against his argument involving the System and Robot
reply. The Token Mind Brain Identity Theory is a precursor of functionalist theories of mind, in
which postulates that similar mental states are multiply realized in a variety of physical brain
states. In terms of Multiple Realizability, this concept would be deemed problematic... Show more

As mentioned, it can be evidently shown through the Turing Test, if a computer perfectly mimics
the human mind through various questions without being detected as one, it would be deemed
intelligent and thus it has a mind just like us. However, Searle s objection to the computer s
simulated intelligence to genuine intelligence represented through the Chinese Room Argument
presented does not entirely illustrate a successful criticism against strong artificial intelligence.
Searle s Chinese Room Argument shows how a system, in this case is the Chinese Room, can
simulate intelligence without possessing any understanding, invalidating functionalism and Strong
AI; a system with functional equivalence has to have mental equivalence, therefore a mind. The
argument proposed explains how Searle is put in a room with Chinese characters and a rulebook
(program) to create appropriate Chinese sentences, as he does not understand any Chinese at all.
He is given questions from the other side of the room by native Chinese people and is expected to
put together sentences to answer the question with the aid of a rulebook and characters. Although
Searle and the native Chinese people are able to answer the questions given, they are not
functionally equivalent. To expand, his thought experiment represents how the complex system the
rulebook, Chinese characters and Searle, himself can be functionally equivalent to the native
Chinese people outside the room because they both are able to answer the given questions.
However, they both cannot be mentally equivalent because Seale who is a component of the
system does not understand Chinese compared to a native Chinese person. The only way for the
Chinese Room to be mentally equivalent to a native Chinese person is if Searle actually understood
Chinese, like a native

The Secret Life of Bees Essay
The Secret Life of Bees
In Sue Monk Kidd s novel The Secret Life of Bees there is a psychological allegory present,
which is proven by the characters in the story. The psychological allegory is based on the theory
by Sigmund Freud, this theory states that in the human brain there is three major psychological
portions, the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the portion that induces selfishness and
hatred and other bad actions, the super ego is the opposite of the id, putting others before ones self
and caring for others, the ego is the perfect balance between the two and is almost always the
psyche portrayed be the protagonist. In this novel it is T. Ray who illustrates the id, through his bad
treatment of Lily, his lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ray to let Rosaleen out of jail, and T. Ray refuses What I ,mean is, I wouldn t be surprised if he
flat out killed her (p30) T. Ray know Rosaleen might die but he still wont try to help her because
it would mean standing up to the people of his community. He is only thinking of himself, which
is a quality of the id. T. Ray also only thinks of himself when Lily leaves him, instead of
considering the fact that she might be happier without him. T. Ray has found Lily at the
Boatwright house and is insisting she come back I spent half my summer looking for you, and I
m taking you out of here (290) T. Ray spent half his summer looking for Lily because he was
happier with her, instead of thinking of Lily and considering the fact that she might be happier with
out him. In this he was only thinking of himself and was demonstrating the id. Through all of these
excerpts it can de determined that the character of T. Ray demonstrates the id in the psychological
allegory, through his bad treatment of Lily, his lack of caring with Rosaleen, and the way he only
thinks of himself.
In this novel the character of May Boatwright portrays the super ego, by her unbiased caring, by
her innocence, and by her need for perfection. May cares for every one no matter what race or
gender, and created a wall to pray for the people of the world. May has just heard that Zach is in jail
and is upset I m going to the wall (p187) May knows Zach is in trouble so she

Essay on Treatment of Women in Jack Kerouacв
Ђ™s On The Road
The Treatment of Women in On The Road
The women in Jack Kerouac s On The Road were, it seems, not afforded the same depth in
character which the author gave the men. The treatment of the women characters in both word and
action by Sal and Dean seems to show that women could only be a virgin/mother figure or a whore.
Throughout the novel there are many instances in which women and their feelings or actions are
either referred to flippantly or blatantly degraded. It can be said, however, that Sal (Kerouac) did
not necessarily agree with this narrow female identity, and there is evidence to support this claim.
The novel also shows though that Sal did participate in this male forced female stereotyping
whether he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So, in consequence, there are many instances of the diminishment of the female identity. These
can be seen in the novels treatment of the female characters like Marylou, Sal s Aunt, and Terry.
Marylou is repeatedly talked about, not talked to. In the part in which Dean wishes Sal to sleep
with Marylou the only dialogue that goes on is either Sal s or Dean s. Marylou has no lines. All
she really has is a little go ahead . That is all and that really does not even imply cooperation;
only coercion like go ahead and You do Your thing to me . Dean is flippantly wanting Marylou to
sleep with his friend with little regard to anything she feels. She is a women, and, what is more
to Dean she is a whore so of course she will sleep with Sal. To Sal s credit though he does ask
what she wants or thinks from the start but this sudden care seems to arise due to his own
nervousness and insecurities not any kind of genuine feeling for Marylou. Her identity as seen
through the eyes of men would fall into the whore stereotype of women. This is the exact
opposite from Sal s Aunt. The most apparent treatment of Sal s Aunt as something less than an
equal comes at the end of part one. Sal has just returned from his first trip west. He is tired. He
has been starving for three days now and of course eats everything in the house. Then his Aunt s
few extensive lines in the entire novel occur, and in a decidedly motherly fashion she says Poor
little Salvatore . She has fulfilled Sal s

How Eleanor Roosevelt Changed The World
Eleanor changed the way we view our first lady. We now know them as independent women who
happen to have their husbands in Office. They take charge of changing the United States for the
better of the citizens of the United States. Eleanor is the niece of the former president Theodore
Roosevelt. She was born into wealthy New York family. Her father Elliott Roosevelt was a
alcoholic and had a narcotic addiction. When their family went overseas for a vacation they sent
Elliott to an asylum in France. Later Theodore sent him to an alcoholic center to help, located in
Dwight,Illinois. Anna Hall Roosevelt, Eleanor s mother, died very early and was a shock to the
entire family. Her mother died when she was eight years old, her 4 year old brother died a year
after her mother, her dad died the year after her brother died. She was an orphan at 9 years and 10
months and lived with her grandmother... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

educational influence. While she was there she was taught composition, music, drawing, painting
and dance. Although there were no classes on history, geography, and philosophy Ms. Souvestre
helped Eleanor find her love for them. President Theodore Roosevelt walked his niece Eleanor
down the aisle on her wedding day. She married Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They met when
Eleanor was on a train to the Hudson River and she met a young man, her distant cousin, and a
man from Harvard. The couple had a secret courtship and later were engaged. FDR s mother did

Swimming Competitively Over The Past 11 Years
Swimming competitively over the past 11 years has had a profound impact on my life.
Swimming has taught me the importance of time management and leadership skills. As I

17 hours a week of training. As you can imagine, this required me to developed my time
management skills because I have had to carefully plan to complete my school work by the given

Semi Autonomous Vehicles In William Gibson s The Shining
Imagine this, Mr. Jones, a fictitious character, is flying in to visit his family in Pittsburgh
Pennsylvania. He arrives at the Pittsburgh Int l Airport and instructs the Uber app on his phone
to ring him a ride and take him to his family s residence. A grey Ford Fusion pulls up to the curb,
and Mr. Jones notices that the roof looks like it s been taken over by a robotic parasite, cameras
and sensors festoon the once elegant design. Nevertheless he pops in his carry on luggage and
gets in. Only to find that no one is the car, just him, alone. He types in the address on the
blinking iPad and the car drives away seemingly knowing exactly where it s going. Mr. Jones is
more frightened of this trip s outcome than the first time he saw The Shining. This alarming, gut
wrenching, nervous reaction will be quite common if tech giants win the battle for Completely
Autonomous Cars (CAC). Semi Autonomous Cars (SAC) already exist and are extremely helpful
to most people. These cars still have steering wheels, pedals, gear selectors, etc. Most importantly
they can still be controlled by humans. CAC are boxes with a bench, no controls and no
emergency override. Occupants are subjected to whatever the car decides what is best for them.
While this may sound like a perfect utopian future, it is closer to something from a Ray Bradbury
book than Disney s Tomorrowland.

What Was Washington s Foreign Affairs
When Washington took over office the United States was a fairly small country compared to today
there was only 11 states and around 4 million people. With no precedent for how presidents should
conduct themselves, knowing that he would set the example on how future presidents would act
Washington began to set many good examples such as respect, fairness, and integrity. Washington
supported certain nations but otherwise decided to remain neutral and stayed out of foreign affairs.
Domestically, Washington signed to start the first national bank for America, he also nominated the
first supreme court justice which was John Jay. One big thing about Washington though is that he

Ella Scatted Her Way to the Top of teh World
Ella Scatted Her Way to the Top of the World The early 1900 s was a violent and horrible time to
look back at. Americans have came a long way since then. America couldn t have gone through a
more rough time. From racism and discrimination to the Great Depression. At the time African
Americans were looked down upon by some people of different races. Hate crimes were
common as well as discrimination in restaurants and other public places. A common quote from
the time was Separate but equal , which was not at all true. There were many people that worked
to end the racism and hate amongst some Americans. One of these many people that was able to
change the way blacks were looked at by some was Ella Fitzgerald, the popular Jazzsinger... Show

Ella was also supported by the famous Marilyn Monroe. She and Monroe became friends one
night when Fitzgerald was discriminated against and arrested. Monroe then came and sat front
row at many of Ella s Jazz performances. Once people saw the famous Marilyn Monroe
supported her more people began to show up and see her perform. She began to perform at bigger
Jazz clubs, increasing the number of fans. People then began to discuss the amazing black singer,
and this proved blacks could do anything any other race could do. Once a ton of people began to
like her music, she was then able to sing almost anywhere in the USA or even internationally
(The official site of the first lady). For instance, Fitzgerald performed at the London Palladium (
Notable Black American Women). Many people of other races supported Mrs. Fitzgerald and
even defended her where racism was shown. People would see her for her music and not her skin
tone, and begin respecting her. She opened up a world of opportunity to the black community by
showing African Americans can be well established and as successful as anyone else in the world.
By being herself, Fitzgerald helped change the way some people viewed a race. The last major thing
the Lady of Song did to change the view for some people was by accomplishing many goals people
expected blacks to never accomplish. Fitzgerald had people of all races love her due to her music
being so diverse and her voice being so beautiful (Judith S.

Nursing Diagnostic Essay
Diagnostic testing performed on the patient was done in relation to presenting chief complaints
of acute abdominal pain and severe shortness of breath. Upon admission, patient was
immediately ordered various forms of diagnostic testing. These tests included CT scan of the
abdomen without contrast and two portable x rays of the kidney, ureters, and bladder (KUB).
The CT scan of the abdomen was ordered for evaluation of abdominal discomfort on February 5,
2016. An abdominal CT scan is a noninvasive radiographic procedure used to diagnose pathologic
conditions in the abdominal cavity. The CT image results from passing X rays through the
abdominal organs at different angles (Pagana Pagana, 2010). As different organs have different
tissue densities, each density is given a numeric value in which these areas turn a shade of gray
(Pagana Pagana, 2010). It with this shading that CT scans can be visualized and read. The use of
contrast can help enhance the images, but for this particular study no contrast was used. The results

A nursing diagnosis is obtained during the initial assessment and acts as an outline for the nurse to
follow in terms of how to provide appropriate prioritized care. Prioritization of care is placed in
order of patient s immediate survival and demand for safety. For these reason, nursing diagnoses are
organized in importance by looking at airway, breathing, and circulation (Herdman, 2016).
Interventions are also dependent on a nursing diagnosis. The selection as to which intervention will
be implemented is based upon the patient s current health status. If the patient s airway, breathing,
or circulation is compromised, the nursing diagnosis related to that condition will be treated

Diego Velázquez – Las Meninas (1656-57)
Introduction
Las Meninas was VelГЎzquez s largest oeuvre measuring 3.21 m by 2.81 m (Umberger 96).
VelГЎzquez s masterpiece is one that draws sharp criticism ranging from those who find this work
as a complete piece with its pictorial features prominent in the artwork, to those who find it hard to
interpret its content conclusively (Ancell 159 160; Snyder 542+; Steinberg 48; Bongiorni 88).
Despite such disparities, VelГЎzquez s masterpiece was able to project a day in the life of the royal
family while at the same time achieving his artistic ideal. This work explores this artwork in light
of the royal family and personal gratification by VelГЎzquez as a celebrated artist.

The first maid of honor is Don МЂa MarГa Augustustina Sarmiento. MarГa offers Margarita a
drink while kneeling down as a sign of her paying homage to the position Margarita holds in the
royal family. The second maid of honor is Don МЂa Isabel de Velasco stands inclined towards the
princess. Isabel s glare is towards the same direction Margarita is facing yet Isabel s face is not
affixed to the viewer s point of view but rather facing down. This captures her as a servant rather
than a member of the royal family.
Another interesting perspective captured in the painting is facial elevation and position. The
meninas heads are at different elevations to that of Margarita. Their attention is towards Margarita
yet their perspectives are different. MarГa s eye view is higher than Margarita s eye view yet the
painter makes it appear as if MarГa s eyes are looking up on Margarita. Moreover, Isabel s elevation
appears to pay homage to Margarita by her angle of inclination, eye direction and facial expression. .
On the foreground, the painting captures two dwarfs. The adult dwarf is MaribГЎrbola while the
midget is the daughter NicolГЎs Pertusato (Umberger 97). NicolГЎs has her foot on the back of the

The problem is that today, everything we eat has meat in it. Many Americans love a juicy beef
burger with a side of fries or a hot dog at a summer bbq. In the article A Nation Of Meat Eaters:
See How It All Adds Up which was heard on Morning Edition reports that U.S has slightly
dropped the meat consumption per person to 270.7 pounds in the recent years, but we still
consume more meat per person than the rest of the country except for the Luxumbourgers and
chicken is the number one meat of choice after the beef consumption was declining in the 1970s
(Aubrey, Charles, Wertheimer). The demand for meat and dairy product is so high from the
consumers that the company is coming with new ideas to add meat and dairy product in their
products, for example, Burger King came up with Chicken fries then Mac and Cheetos ; today
donut shops offer bacon donuts, the hot dog stands now sells bacon wrapped hot dogs and the list
goes on. You will hardly see any company coming up with new healthier or plant based items on

ETHICAL CODES AND PARTICULAR CASES2 The Florida Bar v. McAliley was a case of a
husband who is a member of The Florida Bar fighting with his wife over final order regarding
modification of custody, visitation, parental responsibility, and other issues. He claimed that their
minor child was being harmed by second hand smoke, and was told by his mother how to act
when he was with him. He filed numerous claims to the appellate court ranging from not being
able to be present for medical and dental exams to the trial judge not letting him represent himself.

towards other clients and judges. I understand that people get emotional when things like
divorce and custody arises and things can get out of hand, but in this case, I feel he went a little
overboard only thinking about himself and not considering the consequences this all had on his
ex wife and minor child. He was definitely unprofessional and even one of the judges said if
someone asks me what vexatious litigation looks like, the former husband s various filings in this
divorce case, especially his antics in these post judgment proceedings, are an excellent example
(Judge Farmer, 1997). Judges and lawyers have a higher standard to go by, if this type of action is
not tolerated when representing a client, then it definitely should not be tolerated by a lawyer in his
own case.

The Remains Of The Day By Kazuo Ishiguro And The Play...
Our most basic memory is the meaning of the word itself. When that word is flashed in front of
us, our minds immediately conclude that a memory is a recollection of a past event. But, out of
the millions of long and short term memories in the archives of our brains, what makes us
remember specific events and forget others? To what extent do memories serve as a guideline to
the type of personality and characteristics an individual displays? In the novel The Remains of the
Dayby Kazuo Ishiguroand the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, memories are used for
the understanding of main characters. Ishiguro uses memories to narrate Stevens past working for

He will always try to live up to the high standards his father set for himself as he did that night. In
Death of a Salesman Willy is abandoned by his father at a very young age as well as his brother
Ben who leaves for Alaska where he makes a fortune. In addition, Willy and his son Biff are
constantly in dispute over Willy s opinion that Biff lacks a real job and has no purpose to his
life. At Frank s Chophouse, when Biff returns from an interview with a potential employer,
Willy is expecting good news. As the two go back and forth arguing and not listening to each
other, Willy begins to ramble and has a flashback from the past. Unaware of his surrounding and
the conversation he is presently in, he says, No, no! You had to go and flunk math! ... If you hadn
t flunked you d ve been set by now! (Miller 65) Willy is remembering the fact that Biff was not
able to graduate high school because he failed his math class. Willy, in distress, hurries into the
bathroom and continues to babble while his two sons, Biff and Happy, leave the restaurant
abandoning their father. This memory that Willy recalls shows that he feels responsible for his son
s failure and will never forget the reason Biff did not end up successful which ultimately led to the
abandonment of father by son.
When reflecting on the past a sense of regret arises when feelings of missed opportunities are
thought of. In The Remains of the Day Stevens comes to the realization that he missed an

The United States And European Union
An Agreement to Create a Favorable Economy by Balancing the Net Export
President Obama proclaims a free trade agreement between the United States and European Union.
This issue creates enthusiasm and optimism on both sides. They hope to achieve economic and
political benefits. The hard economic time on both the United States and European Union is the
main reason of this agreement. Another consideration is the growing economics of China. Europe
and USA should work together for dealing with China s growing economy. Since the USA and the
European Union was a big trading partner, they will remove tariff barriers and regulatory detention.

Their products dominate the worldwide market. This problem causes negative shocks to net export
of the USA and the European Union.
Net export of country is the balance of trade; it is a difference value of spending by foreign entities
in goods and services that produced domestically and spending by domestic entities in goods and
services that produce in foreign location. The president of the USA, Barack Obama, believes that he
can make an agreement with European Union about a trading corporation. The agreement will

they can compete with other developing countries, whose dominating worldwide market.
Experts cited tough economic times on both sides of the Atlantic and a perceived need among
European leaders for a cause to unify their frayed union as major reasons that an agreement might

What happened to the protestors after the riot?
How did the event benefit the eight hour movement?

The false gospel like Malware in a computer, will damage the relationship between God and the

does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has
both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not
receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his

fooled by those who try to modify the Word of God. Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy
of Scripture comes from someone s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by
the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter

Essay On Nascar
Is nascar a dangerous sport? Nascar is dangerous but not as dangerous as you think. Many people
think nascar is one of the most dangerous sports. Nascar has changed dramatically over the past
few years. Nascar has many different rule to make sure people stay safe. Nascar drivers have to do
certain things just to get behind the wheel for the first time. When nascarwas first introduced in
1948, they didn t have very many rules at all. I m going to explain how nascar has changed from
1948 to 2017.
Nascar was first invented February 21, 1948. In June 19, 1948, was the first nascar race ever. They

for a series of tests using heavier stock cars, and came away impressed. Within the next two years,
nearly every track on the Cup schedule would have safer barriers at key locations. Every decade,
there s a significant improvement in the level of understanding of energy management. Sicking said.
So do you still think nascar is dangerous? Yes it has its dangerous moments but safety has came a

They are still making safety changes to make drivers more safe. No matter how much nascar tries
to make safe changes there will still be some dangerous things. Although anything in life has some

Comparing Frankenstein And Mother Nature In Frankenstein...
From the beginning of time to the present, nature is always portraying as a broad element of life
that is rarely in everyday language. As a genius writer like Mary Shelley, she writes a frame story
called Frankenstein that illustrates the natures of Victor Frankenstein and the creature. Although it
s a story that revolves around nature but it contains a strong view that Victor Frankensteinas the
creator is less human then his creation. With the very first sight of his creation, Victor already
named it frightful and unpleasing to see. As frighten as Victor can be he abandoned his creation
or the creature to an unknown world. Moreover, as the story progresses Victor will always live in

Knowing his features, the creature isolates itself from the world but seeks a way to learn and
gain knowledge. Shelley uses nature as a symbolic element throughout the book that foreshadows
Frankenstein and the creature s human nature and Mother Nature. As the creator of the creature
Frankenstein, actions towards his surrounding changed drastically knowing that the monster is
somewhere in this world. Since the beginning of Frankenstein s story he was portrayed as a the
innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by Heaven, whom to bring up to good, and
whose future lot it was in their hands to direct to happiness or misery, according as they fulfilled
their duties (Shelley 16). As described by Frankenstein s parents, he was a creature made by God
that can amend the future with his hand and led it to greatness or downfall. This is significant
because it proves that from a young age Frankenstein s parents has given him hope that he can
success in life and make history if he does it right. In other words, he was born with positive human
natures that surround him and shape who he was before he made his monster . However, after
creating the monster

Scientific Method and Sir Karl Popper
Sir Karl Popper, challenging the status quo, inspiring generations to ponder on the meaning of
science, the methods to find truth, is one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century.
Of particular importance to scientific methods of inquiry is the brawl between the development of
theory and the criteria for science. In Popper s own words, it is in this brawl that Popper decided to
grapple with the problem: When should a theorybe ranked as scientific? or Is there a criterion for
the scientific character or status of a theory? (Popper 1957), p. 1).
Born just after the turn of the century in 1902 (my Great Aunt was 4 at the time), in London,
England, Popper began grappling with the brawl between when is theory scientific ... Show more

The use of empirical methods and inductive explanations is the root cause for Popper s revolt upon
the metaphysical reasoning used to explain social behavior (at this time). It is not that astrology is
a pseudo science; astrology is merely a residue of the subject of the investigation (Popper 1952).
Disciplines are means of administratively distinguishing the unified systems from which problems
may be taught. It is far more important to understanding falsification that We are not students of a
subject matter but students of problems (Popper 1952)p. 125).
Traditionally, scientists formed hypotheses to explain or rationalize some natural phoneme that
they have observed. Popper intends that a hypothesis must predict a phenomenon or behavior
and not just offer to explain it. I believe that there is not a classic of science, or of mathematics,
or indeed a book worth reading that could not be shown, by a skillful application of the technique
of language analysis, to be full of meaningless pseudo propositions (Popper 1952), p. 130). Popper
is positive that each hypothesis has a possible contradiction. This sensitiveness to problems to the
extent of having a consuming passion for them fortifies Popper s revolt against merely accepting
plausible and rationalized results of observations.
For falsification to take place, the scientist must identify situations that falsify or negate the
hypothesis. Finally,

Financial Statements Paper
Abstract
In this paper I will identify the four basic financial statements, discuss how they are interrelated with
each other, and why they are useful to managers, investors, creditors, and employees.
BALANCE SHEET
A balance sheet provides detailed information about a company s assets, liabilities and shareholders
equity.
Assets are things that a company owns that have value. This usually means they can either be sold
or used by the company to make products or provide services that can be sold. Assets include
physical property, such as plants, trucks, equipment and inventory. Assets also include things that
can t be touched but nonetheless exist and have value, such as trademarks and patents. Cash itself
is an asset, as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Small business owners use these statements to find out what areas of their business are over
budget or under budget. Specific items that are causing unexpected expenditures can be
pinpointed, such as phone, fax, mail, or supply expenses. Income statements can also track
dramatic increases in product returns or cost of goods sold as a percentage of sales. They also can
be used to determine income tax liability.
Income statements, along with balance sheets, are the most basic elements required by potential
lenders, such as banks, investors, and vendors. They will use the financial reporting contained
therein to determine credit limits.
STATEMENT OF OWNERS EQUITY (STATEMENT OF RETAINED EARNINGS
)
Retained earnings appear on the balance sheet and most commonly are influenced by income and
dividends. The Statement of Retained Earnings therefore uses information from the Income
Statement and provides information to the Balance Sheet.
The Statement of Retained Earnings is a summary of the changes that occurred in the owner s
equity during a specific time period, such as a month or a year. Increases to owner s equity arise
from investments by the owner and from net income earned during the period. Decreases result
from owner withdrawals and from a net loss for the period. Net income or net losses come directly
from the income statement, and owner investments are capital transactions between the business

perspective using the centuries of hindsight acquired. He tries to focus on the different relationships
the men had and how they were influenced by the events and each other during this very formative
chapter of the country. Founding Brothers is a non fiction novel in which Ellis attempts to focus on
the highlighted events in both post revolutionary times and the lives of the Founding Fathers. He
attempts to address each specific relationship and how they were impacted by the harsh times in

Abstract Data Clustering is key point used in data processing algorithms for Data Mining.
Clustering is a data mining technique used to place data elements into related groups without
advance knowledge of the group definitions. Popular clustering techniques include k means
clustering. Clustering is imperative idea in data investigation and data mining applications. In last
decade, K means has been popular clustering algorithm because of its ease of use and simplicity.
Now days, as data size is continuously increasing, some researchers started working over distributed
environment such as MapReduce to get high performance for big data clustering.

Figurative Language In War Of The Worlds
The figurative language used in War of the Worlds was intended to help the reader interpret what
was happening to the narrator. One of the examples of figurative language used by the narrator
was when he was looking out of his window the morning following the falling of the third star and
the storm. Looking outside, he could see that many houses near Maybury Hill had been burned the
night before. To better explain the spectacle, the narrator called those houses glowing ruins. (143).
A metaphor is typically used when something is so undescribable, it can only be best stated by
being compared to something completely different. When I think of houses that had previously
been burned, I picture a dark black house with steam rising from it. However,

The History And Social Impact Of The Circus Freak Show
The History and Social Impact of the Circus Freak Show Since it s humble beginning in the mid
16th century, the circus and freak show act has been entertaining and horrifying people to this
day; however, in today s ultra sensitive society, how has the classic freak show evolved to be
deemed acceptable and be used to promote acceptance and positive views of people with
abnormalities, rather than viewing these people as freaks , as was the original purpose of the
classic freak show? Popularized in the mid 16th century, the circusfreak show became a common
pastime in England. People with deformities and disabilities began being treated less as humans,
and more as sources of interest and entrainment, and the crowds would gather to see these people
exhibited. A notable early display was that of conjoined twins Lazarus and Johannes Baptista
Colloredo. As described by History Magazine, Lazarus was thought to be quite handsome,
appearing otherwise perfectly healthy, but for his conjoined twin brother. Joannes Baptista
protruded, upside down, from his brother s chest. He was significantly smaller than Lazarus,
and only his upper body and left leg visibly extended from his brother s torso (Strange and
Bizarre:). Based off this description it is no wonder why the brothers became a popular exhibition
at the court of King Charles I. Though the freak show was initially a display for the upper class, it
would not take long for people to see the profitability of these acts.

Persuasive Essay On Sexual Orientation
Love is a tricky topic. Many have been persecuted because of who they have loved. A common
debate in society is that sexual orientation is a choice. Nurture will say that the environment around
a person plays a role, and nature will say that sexual orientation has to do with science. The nurture
argument is a common viewpoint because many can never imagine liking the same sex, but then
why is the nature viewpoint scientifically backed up?
Before jumping into each argument, sexual orientation needs to be defined. Sexual orientation is
about who you re attracted to and want to have relationships with, according to Planned
Parenthood (Parenthood). Sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity. Sexual orientation
has to do with who a person is attracted to, and gender identity is about what gender a person
identifies with. There are many different labels that people put on people who have a different
sexual orientation than what is considered the common, which is a heterosexual relationship. The
most common two are gays for men who like men, and lesbians who are women that like women.
There are also people who identify as bisexual meaning they like both male and female. Another
group that has a different sexual orientation is people who are attracted to more than just the
average male and female, they can be attracted to basically anyone, which includes people who are
transgender, genderqueer, or intersex. They are named pansexual or queer. Lastly, there are people

BACKGROUND FACTS: We are acting for Robert Joyce, who has two problems regarding
different issues. The first problem is in relation to his company, Joyce Holdings Ltd. His company
was granted a commercial lease, whereby Mr Joyce acted as a guarantor and guaranteed to take on
a new lease of the premises if the company became insolvent. The company went into
administration early this year. The administrators have vacated the property and ceased to take
responsibility or pay rent to the landlord. They have returned the keys and surrendered the leasefor
no payment. The landlord has secured the premises and marketed it receiving no interest. The
landlord is now requiring Mr Joyce to take a new lease of the premises under his guarantee. The
second problem concerns his freehold house in Peterborough. He wishes to let this out to foreign
workers (principally but not exclusively) from Poland. He is not using a letting agent as he has
his own source in Poland. He is aware of the legislative requirements up until the end of 2015 and

Nephrology was given the opportunity to influence the direction of the practice over the next
several years. This strategic plan represents a true consensus of the stakeholders of Maine
NephrologyAssociates. In the plan you will find that Maine Nephrology will continue to serve the
public that have made Maine Nephrology Associates one of the leading private practices servicing

The Works Of Vincent Van Gogh
Attention Getter: Picture yourself working countless of hours on an assignment for a class you
absolutely love. You put every ounce of your being into this one assignment with the hopes of
receiving praise and knowing that your hard work has paid off in the end, only for you to be
shattered when you re work is ridiculed. Now imagine that this doesn t just happen once, but
everytime. Constantly being surrounded by this negativity would surely make you believe that the
people are right; that your work is useless. This is the constant state of mind that Vincent Van Gogh
lived in with his work being heavily criticized and never praised.
Background and Audience Relevance: Van Gogh is one of the most well known artists today.
His vivid landscapes and portraits are praised for their use of different colors and bold brush
strokes. Many people can easily recognize a Van Gogh painting, but they don t know much
regarding his life or the struggles he faced as an artist.
Speaker Credibility: I took French for 3 years, and learned more than just the language but also
some history and culture. Impressionism was an art movements that begun in France, so naturally
we focused on impressionistic art and artists for most of the time. Furthermore, I also took a
European history class that incorporated the importance of art for each time period.
Thesis: Learning about Vincent Van Gogh will help you better understand the post impressionist art
movement, and the difficulties he endured.

Russian Formalism And The Hero
The title hero has been around for a long time. There are many things that can pop into a person s
head when the word hero is said. Within Russian formalism, there is the idea of structures and
perceptions within literature. The time, place, historical movement, and author, can change the
perceptions of a novel or even how it is written. Stories have been around since people started to
communicate. Stories or myths were used to teach lessons, for entertainment, or to keep history
alive. There have always been different types of stories that people would talk about. One type of
story that has been around for a long time is the story of heroes. The stories started out having
hidden lessons within the stories. To fully understand the archetype, or structure, of the heroquest
Russian formalismwill be discussed. With understanding Russian formalism, it then will be
connected to the hero quest structure. The hero quest structure will then be broken down to be
explained. To better understand the hero quest the French novel, Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow by FaГ

GuГЁne will be analyzed using this structure. Following the concepts of Russian formalism, novels
can be classified through the hero quest structure influencing the perceptions of the works.
Russian formalism is a mixture of symbolism theory mixed with linguistic theory. But, with
formalism studies are more scientific and objective than that of symbolist theory. Russian
formalism is a type of literary criticism and looks at the

  • 2. Chinese Room Argument John Searle s Chinese Room Argument against Strong Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a successful criticism of functionalist theories of mind because it fails to address the rebuttals formulated for the theory systems presented by Strong AI and functionalism. The paper will discuss this through the precursor of Functionalism, Token Mind Brain Identity Theory; Turing Test; Searle s Chinese Room Argument and criticisms against his argument involving the System and Robot reply. The Token Mind Brain Identity Theory is a precursor of functionalist theories of mind, in which postulates that similar mental states are multiply realized in a variety of physical brain states. In terms of Multiple Realizability, this concept would be deemed problematic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned, it can be evidently shown through the Turing Test, if a computer perfectly mimics the human mind through various questions without being detected as one, it would be deemed intelligent and thus it has a mind just like us. However, Searle s objection to the computer s simulated intelligence to genuine intelligence represented through the Chinese Room Argument presented does not entirely illustrate a successful criticism against strong artificial intelligence. Searle s Chinese Room Argument shows how a system, in this case is the Chinese Room, can simulate intelligence without possessing any understanding, invalidating functionalism and Strong AI; a system with functional equivalence has to have mental equivalence, therefore a mind. The argument proposed explains how Searle is put in a room with Chinese characters and a rulebook (program) to create appropriate Chinese sentences, as he does not understand any Chinese at all. He is given questions from the other side of the room by native Chinese people and is expected to put together sentences to answer the question with the aid of a rulebook and characters. Although Searle and the native Chinese people are able to answer the questions given, they are not functionally equivalent. To expand, his thought experiment represents how the complex system the rulebook, Chinese characters and Searle, himself can be functionally equivalent to the native Chinese people outside the room because they both are able to answer the given questions. However, they both cannot be mentally equivalent because Seale who is a component of the system does not understand Chinese compared to a native Chinese person. The only way for the Chinese Room to be mentally equivalent to a native Chinese person is if Searle actually understood Chinese, like a native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Secret Life of Bees Essay The Secret Life of Bees In Sue Monk Kidd s novel The Secret Life of Bees there is a psychological allegory present, which is proven by the characters in the story. The psychological allegory is based on the theory by Sigmund Freud, this theory states that in the human brain there is three major psychological portions, the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the portion that induces selfishness and hatred and other bad actions, the super ego is the opposite of the id, putting others before ones self and caring for others, the ego is the perfect balance between the two and is almost always the psyche portrayed be the protagonist. Ray know Rosaleen might die but he still wont try to help her because it would mean standing up to the people of his community. He is only thinking of himself, which is a quality of the id. T. Ray also only thinks of himself when Lily leaves him, instead of considering the fact that she might be happier without him. T. Ray has found Lily at the Boatwright house and is insisting she come back I spent half my summer looking for you, and I m taking you out of here (290) T. Ray spent half his summer looking for Lily because he was happier with her, instead of thinking of Lily and considering the fact that she might be happier with out him. In this he was only thinking of himself and was demonstrating the id. Through all of these excerpts it can de determined that the character of T. Ray demonstrates the id in the psychological allegory, through his bad treatment of Lily, his lack of caring with Rosaleen, and the way he only thinks of himself. In this novel the character of May Boatwright portrays the super ego, by her unbiased caring, by her innocence, and by her need for perfection. May cares for every one no matter what race or gender, and created a wall to pray for the people of the world. • 4. Essay on Treatment of Women in Jack Kerouacв Ђ™s On The Road The Treatment of Women in On The Road The women in Jack Kerouac s On The Road were, it seems, not afforded the same depth in character which the author gave the men. The treatment of the women characters in both word and action by Sal and Dean seems to show that women could only be a virgin/mother figure or a whore. Throughout the novel there are many instances in which women and their feelings or actions are either referred to flippantly or blatantly degraded. It can be said, however, that Sal (Kerouac) did not necessarily agree with this narrow female identity, and there is evidence to support this claim. The novel also shows though that Sal did participate in this male forced female stereotyping whether he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, in consequence, there are many instances of the diminishment of the female identity. These can be seen in the novels treatment of the female characters like Marylou, Sal s Aunt, and Terry. Marylou is repeatedly talked about, not talked to. In the part in which Dean wishes Sal to sleep with Marylou the only dialogue that goes on is either Sal s or Dean s. Marylou has no lines. All she really has is a little go ahead . That is all and that really does not even imply cooperation; only coercion like go ahead and You do Your thing to me . Dean is flippantly wanting Marylou to sleep with his friend with little regard to anything she feels. She is a women, and, what is more to Dean she is a whore so of course she will sleep with Sal. To Sal s credit though he does ask what she wants or thinks from the start but this sudden care seems to arise due to his own nervousness and insecurities not any kind of genuine feeling for Marylou. Her identity as seen through the eyes of men would fall into the whore stereotype of women. This is the exact opposite from Sal s Aunt. The most apparent treatment of Sal s Aunt as something less than an equal comes at the end of part one. Sal has just returned from his first trip west. He is tired. He has been starving for three days now and of course eats everything in the house. Then his Aunt s few extensive lines in the entire novel occur, and in a decidedly motherly fashion she says Poor little Salvatore . She has fulfilled Sal s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He arrives at the Pittsburgh Int l Airport and instructs the Uber app on his phone to ring him a ride and take him to his family s residence. A grey Ford Fusion pulls up to the curb, and Mr. Jones notices that the roof looks like it s been taken over by a robotic parasite, cameras and sensors festoon the once elegant design. Nevertheless he pops in his carry on luggage and gets in. Only to find that no one is the car, just him, alone. He types in the address on the blinking iPad and the car drives away seemingly knowing exactly where it s going. Mr. Jones is more frightened of this trip s outcome than the first time he saw The Shining. This alarming, gut wrenching, nervous reaction will be quite common if tech giants win the battle for Completely Autonomous Cars (CAC). Semi Autonomous Cars (SAC) already exist and are extremely helpful to most people. These cars still have steering wheels, pedals, gear selectors, etc. Most importantly they can still be controlled by humans. CAC are boxes with a bench, no controls and no emergency override. Occupants are subjected to whatever the car decides what is best for them. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works (ESV). Furthermore, Christians must trust the authenticity of the Word and not be fooled by those who try to modify the Word of God. Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20 21). Only through the authentication of Christ can believe stand before God. For the is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time (1 Timothy 2:5 6, ESV). Scientific Method and Sir Karl Popper Sir Karl Popper, challenging the status quo, inspiring generations to ponder on the meaning of science, the methods to find truth, is one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. Of particular importance to scientific methods of inquiry is the brawl between the development of theory and the criteria for science. In Popper s own words, it is in this brawl that Popper decided to grapple with the problem: When should a theorybe ranked as scientific? or Is there a criterion for the scientific character or status of a theory? (Popper 1957), p. 1). The use of empirical methods and inductive explanations is the root cause for Popper s revolt upon the metaphysical reasoning used to explain social behavior (at this time). It is not that astrology is a pseudo science; astrology is merely a residue of the subject of the investigation (Popper 1952). Disciplines are means of administratively distinguishing the unified systems from which problems may be taught. It is far more important to understanding falsification that We are not students of a subject matter but students of problems (Popper 1952)p. 125). Traditionally, scientists formed hypotheses to explain or rationalize some natural phoneme that they have observed. Popper intends that a hypothesis must predict a phenomenon or behavior and not just offer to explain it. I believe that there is not a classic of science, or of mathematics, or indeed a book worth reading that could not be shown, by a skillful application of the technique of language analysis, to be full of meaningless pseudo propositions (Popper 1952), p. 130). Popper is positive that each hypothesis has a possible contradiction. This sensitiveness to problems to the extent of having a consuming passion for them fortifies Popper s revolt against merely accepting plausible and rationalized results of observations. For falsification to take place, the scientist must identify situations that falsify or negate the hypothesis. Finally, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This usually means they can either be sold or used by the company to make products or provide services that can be sold. Specific items that are causing unexpected expenditures can be pinpointed, such as phone, fax, mail, or supply expenses. Income statements can also track dramatic increases in product returns or cost of goods sold as a percentage of sales. They also can be used to determine income tax liability. Income statements, along with balance sheets, are the most basic elements required by potential lenders, such as banks, investors, and vendors. They will use the financial reporting contained therein to determine credit limits. STATEMENT OF OWNERS EQUITY (STATEMENT OF RETAINED EARNINGS ) Retained earnings appear on the balance sheet and most commonly are influenced by income and dividends. The Statement of Retained Earnings therefore uses information from the Income Statement and provides information to the Balance Sheet. The Statement of Retained Earnings is a summary of the changes that occurred in the owner s equity during a specific time period, such as a month or a year. • 39. The History And Social Impact Of The Circus Freak Show The History and Social Impact of the Circus Freak Show Since it s humble beginning in the mid 16th century, the circus and freak show act has been entertaining and horrifying people to this day; however, in today s ultra sensitive society, how has the classic freak show evolved to be deemed acceptable and be used to promote acceptance and positive views of people with abnormalities, rather than viewing these people as freaks , as was the original purpose of the classic freak show? Popularized in the mid 16th century, the circusfreak show became a common pastime in England. People with deformities and disabilities began being treated less as humans, and more as sources of interest and entrainment, and the crowds would gather to see these people exhibited. A notable early display was that of conjoined twins Lazarus and Johannes Baptista Colloredo. As described by History Magazine, Lazarus was thought to be quite handsome, appearing otherwise perfectly healthy, but for his conjoined twin brother. Joannes Baptista protruded, upside down, from his brother s chest. He was significantly smaller than Lazarus, and only his upper body and left leg visibly extended from his brother s torso (Strange and Bizarre:). Based off this description it is no wonder why the brothers became a popular exhibition at the court of King Charles I. Though the freak show was initially a display for the upper class, it would not take long for people to see the profitability of these acts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Persuasive Essay On Sexual Orientation Love is a tricky topic. Many have been persecuted because of who they have loved. A common debate in society is that sexual orientation is a choice. Nurture will say that the environment around a person plays a role, and nature will say that sexual orientation has to do with science. The nurture argument is a common viewpoint because many can never imagine liking the same sex, but then why is the nature viewpoint scientifically backed up? Before jumping into each argument, sexual orientation needs to be defined. Sexual orientation is about who you re attracted to and want to have relationships with, according to Planned Parenthood (Parenthood). Sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity. Sexual orientation has to do with who a person is attracted to, and gender identity is about what gender a person identifies with. There are many different labels that people put on people who have a different sexual orientation than what is considered the common, which is a heterosexual relationship. The most common two are gays for men who like men, and lesbians who are women that like women. There are also people who identify as bisexual meaning they like both male and female. Another group that has a different sexual orientation is people who are attracted to more than just the average male and female, they can be attracted to basically anyone, which includes people who are transgender, genderqueer, or intersex.
