Antidepressants And The Monoamine Theory Of Depression
1.Introduction
1.1. Depression: definition, symptoms and classification
Depression is defined by the DSM IV as a mental disorder characterized by sustained depression
of mood, anhedonia, sleep and appetite disturbances, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and
hopelessness. Depressive symptoms such as the mere inability to experience pleasure and loss of
energy persisting for longer than two weeks are usually enough to indicate an affective disorder
(Hirschfeld 2014). There are significant variations in presentations and diagnosis criteria, but
regardless of the classification of depressive states (Major (Unipolar), Bipolar, Dysthymia, Atypical,
SAD, Postpartum), it is agreed upon that pharmacological interventions are sometimes required: to
alleviate debilitating symptoms and improve patients quality of life. The interest in depression
medications reflects the gravity of the disease i.e. its ability to psychologically impair lives and
lead to suicide.

help in considering patients preferences along with overcoming antidepressants tolerance and
resistance issues. Nevertheless, despite the availability of more than two dozens different
antidepressants, these treatments often yield inadequate results, for instance; up to 70% of patients
with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) do not reach remission with an adequate course of one
antidepressant and experience poorer long term outcomes (Fava 2003).The failures and
shortcomings of classical antidepressants are usually rationalized through illustrating the hypothesis

Essay On English Reflection
Semester One English Reflection
August 17, 2017; also known as my first day of officially naming myself a high school student at
Lindbergh High School. I walked into my fourth hour, English 1 Honors, not knowing what I
would encounter within the next four months of my academic career. English (until now)
remained my best and most favorite subject ever since I could remember, however, this year I
began to feel the challenge I have always needed, especially with the new grading system.
Standard based grading consists of grading each individual category us students consistently remain
expected to learn, and master this year. Categories like speaking and listening, reading, writing, and
habits of learning . Throughout semester one, I showed an increase of my weaknesses within the
categories of speaking and listening and habits of learning while I showed an increase of my
strengths in the categories reading and writing.
To begin, the first semester of my high school experience as a whole seemed very stressful. By this
I mean, completing my work along with adapting to listening to the new teaching styles and
getting over my biggest fear speaking in front of the class. Although, anything takes time to get
used to, English illustrates a perfect example. As I stated before, the standard based grading
system needed some time to get used to, along with the expectations and requirements of honors
versus regular. As time went on, my grades show that I never really got used to this. During term
one, my habits of learning average ended with an average of 91%. At this time, I realized the
level of difficulty English would endure, so I put more effort into it... at the time. During term
two, my habits of learning average went down to a 76%. The biggest reason, while in English
there consisted a large amount of classwork, it meant an increased amount of classwork for other
classes as well. After reviewing this, I feel very disappointed with how my efforts towards
academic responsibility weakened, making one of my goals to put forth more effort during
semester two. As I said before, high school alone pulled out a magnificent amount of stress, not
helped by one of my weakest categories ever since I started school consisted of

Impact Of Tourism On Economic And Social Development Programs
Tourism is integrated in economic and social development programs and can be considered as a
method to protect the natural and social capital upon which the industry is built (McCool and
Moisey 2001 and Hunter 1997). According to Robinson (1999 cited in McCool 2002), tourism is
viewed as a tool which is sometimes might be important to a community and other times not so
important. Therefore, it is not said that protecting cultures for the value of the tourism industry, but
for the value to the people.The carrying capacitystudies began during the 1930 s (O Reilly, 1986;
Saveriades, 2000), they were principally developed in the 1960 s in the national parks of the
United States of America (McCool and Lime, 2001; Manning ., 2002).
Johnson and Thomas (1996) argue that present interest in tourism capacity is due to growth in
tourism combined with increasing awareness of environmental issues. The concept is
particularly important in the coastal zone which is undergoing rapid change as a result of
demographic changes and industrialization (see Kay and Alder, 1999, p. 21) in the context of
global climate and sea level change. In its broadest sense, carrying capacity refers to the ability of
a system to support an activity or feature at a given level. In the coastal zone, these systems can
vary greatly in both scale and type, and range from small salt marshes through large beach resorts to
entire continental coasts. The activities or features that they support are also varied and

On January 11, 2013 I felt horrible on my second day of my last semester of high school. I went

told my mother what was going on. Then she check my body temperature. It was a little elevated.
So I just went to sleep and the next morning it was higher. So, we went to see my doctor. And they
said it was just something like the flu. They told us to treat the symptoms. During that night my
fever spikes to 106.8, I could not move much I was going in and out consciousness. I lost more

When I went the doctor said it is not a virus but only thing it can be is a bacteria. They told me to

Symbolism In John Irving s A Prayer For Owen Meany
Symbolism is often shown in John Irving s A Prayer for Owen Meany through recurring topics
such as armlessness. From Owen amputating the armadillos claws, to Owen being obsessed with
amputations in general, this topic foreshadows Owen s death, and helps build the theme of
destiny and fate. Irving uses armlessness to symbolize helplessness and loss of something very
important to a person. At the start of the novel, after Owen s foul ball killed Tabitha, John gives
Owen his armadillo to show Owen that he still loves him. When Owen returned the armadillo,
the claws were missing because Owen amputated them. Owen explains that Dan, John, and
himself all lost a part of them just like the armadillo lost his claws. Owen had meant to say that
God had taken his hands and that he believed he was an instrument of God. GOD HAS TAKEN
YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS.
I AM GOD S INSTRUMENT. (90) Owen used his arms to throw the foul ball that killed Tabitha.
He amputated the armadillo s claws to show John and Dan that when they lost Tabitha, they both
lost something important to them just as the claws of an armadillo were important to the animal.
This quote also foreshadows how Owen dies, and how God put him on the Earth to fulfill a God
given task. As the novel continues, John recalls a memory of Owen and him having a sleepover.
At that sleepover Owen felt very sick, so he went to go ask John s mother, Tabitha for help. When
Owen walked into

One of the most important things to consider when remodeling your basement is the basement
ceiling. People find basement ceilings a bit hideous and if you are of the same opinion, then you
need to do something about it. Most people want their basement to be warm and cozy, instead of
that desolate look often acquainted with an unfinished basement. There are different basement
ceiling ideas to make your ceiling a place that you wantit to be. Basement ceilings may either be
dry walled or suspended. You can choose which kind to install but always remember to add
decorative touches in order to make them look exactly like any other roomsin your home.

The Importance Of Education In Immigrant Students
Compared with the native born students, immigrant student success rate is significantly lower.
Many immigrant children who struggle to reach their optimum levels in school because of language
barriers, acculturation, and lack of resources at home. This problem is affecting thousands of young
immigrant studentis a negative way. When students newly come the United States, they have a
difficult time with learning the English language and adapting to the way that schools work. What
programs can schools implement to help immigrant student to ensure success in their new
environment?
The first article I researched was, I m Telling You...The Language Barrier Is the Most, the Biggest
Challenge : Barriers to Education among Karen Refugee Women in Australia (2012) by Paula
Watkins, Husna Razee, and Juliet Richters. The authors discussed about how language proficiency
is a prerequisite for economic, political, social and cultural integration (126). It made me aware
that in order to fit into a new culture you have to be able to understand them politically,
economically, and socially. The authors support this claim by doing a case study with female
immigrants from Burma to see how the lack of English proficiency effects them social,
economically, politically, and culturally (129 133). Their data and findings from the case study
showed that to be able to blend into a new society and culture you need to not just be English
proficient, but also have to know the environment that it

Lord Chesterfield Character Analysis
In Lord Chesterfield s letter to his son, he attempts to shape him into a respectable man worthy
of inheriting the family wealth in ways that can still be recognized in parenting today. In modern
times, parents put a high value on grades and schooling; Chesterfield chides his son to take more
care in his accumulation of knowledge. Respect is also key, parents still demand the same
respect from their children as Chesterfield expects from his son. Another thing that parents will
often say is to learn from their mistakes which is something Chesterfield places high value on.
The things Chesterfield tries to pass on in this letter to his son say a lot about his personal values,
namely, the value he places on respect, education, and decision making. Throughout his letter,
Lord Chesterfield makes small, passive aggressive remarks that hint underhandedly at the
repercussions should his son choose not to respect what he is saying. He threatens that his young
son can not have a shilling in the world but from [him] (27 28). Here, Chesterfield warns that he
will not be allowed even a little bit of the family s fortune unless he gives it to him. Basically,
Chesterfield is exposing the complete dependency his son has on him due to their aristocratic
status. This also alludes to respect because if his son does not respect him, he will quiet literally
have nothing. Additionally, Chesterfield is convinced [his son] will act right (32) not because he
threatened him with what

Offshore Oi Drilling Causes Environmental Damage Essay
Oil drilling is the process of perforating oil from the earth s surface. This process can be
dangerous. The drilling process can be harmful to nearby animal life. The process used to locate
oil waves can be harmful to animal life. When the oil ascends, it brings with it a number of deadly
chemicals. The chemicals released can consist of mercury and arsenic. Other substances such as
lead have been known to ascend with the oil (Horton, Jennifer, 1).
An oil spill is the process by which oil is mistakenly dispensed. The danger and damage an oil
spill can cause is exponential. An oil spill can cause millions of dollars in damages. Oil spills are

The animal death toll was far greater than that of the human (Clean Energy, 1). Over four thousand
animals died, and more were injured as a result of the British Petroleum oil spill (Clean Energy, 1).
Dolphins were enveloped in the oil (Clean Energy, 1). Four hundred and six dolphins lost their
lives during the eighty seven day plague (Clean Energy, 1). The bird population of the Gulf
decreased as well (Clean Energy, 1). Some of the birds were cloaked with oil (Clean Energy, 1).
Thousands of dead and suffering birds were seen floating in the black pools of oil (Clean
Energy, 1). Six thousand one hundred and twenty four birds died as a result of the Gulf oil spill
(Clean Energy, 1). However birds and dolphins were not the only victims (Clean Energy, 1). The
British Petroleum oil spill destroyed a portion of the sea turtle population found in the Gulf of
Mexico (Clean Energy, 1). Over five hundred sea turtles, some of them babies were affected by
the spill (Clean Energy, 1). A grand total of six hundred and nine sea turtles died as a result of the
spill (Clean Energy, 1). These are only the documented deaths (Clean Energy, 1). The true animal
death toll is estimated to be fifty times the number of deceased carcasses that were found floating,
or washed up on the shore (Clean Energy, 1).
An oil spill is not the only oil related incident that can harm

how technology has changed

How technology has changed Technology today, has allowed us to connect with people with ease,
and has made many tasks so much easier. From desktops to IPhones, the world we live in today
allows us to communicate with anybody with wireless access with just a couple clicks of a mouse.
As civilization has evolved so has technology, from letters to phone calls to email, basic
communication methods have consistently progressed into the complex system we have today. As
we become more dependent on technological communication, such improvements will continue to
be made. First of all, imagine attempting to live the way we do today, to the way we use to live a
decade ago. I remember having to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems hard these days to fathom the original size of computers and how small they have
become in the last ten years, but within the last five they have become even smaller and
somehow more powerful and faster than ever! For the past decade or so, technology has
transformed the way we communicate, the days are gone where we had to write letters and mail
them out and wait a week for our friends and family to receive them now, we can just email and
within seconds they receive our letters. Long distance phone calls are also unnecessary for anyone
with a computer, a webcam and a speedy internet connection is all you need now. Cell phones are
a huge advantage for us because we can now place calls to anyone in the world no matter where
we are at, we no longer have to wait until we get home or look for a phone booth to place
emergency phone calls. One of the disadvantages of all this technology we have is that it has made
our society somewhat impersonal. For instance, instead of communicating with my customers at
work over the phone, I can now just communicate with them through e mail or through instant
messaging. As a result, it is difficult to tell if one of my customers is upset. Technology also tends
to make communication drag out more than it has to, sometimes it s quicker to just get out of
your seat and walk to the person, or just simply pick up the phone. To conclude, I believe in
technology, and I completely support it but only to an extent. I say, go

Educator Training Essay
Educator Training Regardless of the years of athletic experience among a team of coaches and
teachers, an active training program will help staff members to stay informed about the
psychological dimensions of student athletes; thereby applying the first tenet of SLT. Smith and
Smoll examined the effects of providing positive athletic setting resulting in a 30 5% reduction in
athlete dropout rates. I appreciate the fact these results were equally positive among both boy and

If a student has been modeling poor character, he needs to know that he has the power to turn his
behavior around with tools, such as imagery. With this technique, a student is guided to remember
situations and imagines making better choices with better outcomes. Smith and Smoll s study
indicates that the sooner imagery occurs after an incident, the stronger are its effects. Author,
coach, and father, Mike James tells his athletes that negative thoughts will creep in from time to
time; however, the key is whether we submit to these thoughts and emotions and let them control
us or whether we exercise our freedom of choice as respond a different way (James, 2017, p. 236).
Inspirational tools include allowing coaches to be social agents who label positive sporting
behavior, and practicing mental skills for improving moral reasoning. And when detrimental actions
occur, be prepared, because conduct issues will arise. Managing Conduct Issues How coaches react
to conduct issues can create positive learning opportunities, promote character development, and

A Not-so-Secret Escape
A Not So Secret Escape If you were to ask someone twenty years ago what camping is all about,
they would immediately tell you about campfires, sleeping bags, and how the stars shine brightly
at night. However, today s outlook on camping has changed completely. It involves a motor home
which includes a kitchen and a modern day shower located on a campground just a few feet away
from access to the Internet. Sure it is nice not to have to leave anything behind while on your
campingtrip, but you re really not camping. Real camping is dirty, simple, and breathtaking. It
involves sleeping on the ground with just a thin layer separating you from the freezing, soft soil
filled with insects ready to climb on top of your warm body. Camping is taking hour long walks,
exploring the scenery that surrounds you while avoiding the dangers in the forest. To
experience real camping, one should work hard for their food, warmth, and comfort. Even
though camping in a four wheeled home with all the daily amenities is easier than camping that
involves secluding yourself in the middle of the forest, it doesn t reveal one of camping s
greatest attributes: an escape from the busy society in which we live today. As a kid, I never
really enjoyed going camping with my family. The way I looked at it, it took away time from my
games and the luxury of indoor plumbing. I could not see the joy in being outside for a week

A Note On Subprime Loans
Recent mayhem in the American economy attributed to a weakening of business regulation. In the
absence of oversight, lending became a wildcat enterprise. Mortgage brokers easily deceived
home buyers by promoting subprime loans, and then they passed on bundled documents to unwary
investors. These subprime loans were offered at a rate above prime to individuals who did not
qualify for prime rate loans. The loans were made to people who had no other way to access funds,
and little understanding of the mechanics of the loan. A scholarly document on subprime lendingby
Hanif NuMan warns, Servicing prime and alternative A (not subprime) loans, the automated
underwriting systems were designed to the specifications of banks and financial institutions,
and utilized by loan originators to originate more loans as well as develop a database for the
respective entities (NuMan). Subprime loans by and large were issued without regard to what
would happen if the borrower could not repay the loan. Subprime loans commonly have
adjustable rates that have monthly payments that will dramatically increase two years after
receiving the loan. Subprime loans were usually classified as those where the borrower had a
FICO score below 640. Subprime loans can be based on credit scores alone. On the homeowner s
home loan application subprime loans would have the option to use a stated income or even no
income or asset verification at all. Special terms usually accompany subprime loans, for example,

Discipleship Research Paper
Introduction Making disciples is the all encompassing purpose of the church. Many churches do a
tremendous amount of work toward the goal of making disciples, but sometimes it is in an
unhealthy manner. Just as a healthy person is going to have the most positive productivity in life,
a healthy church will also have the most constructive output of discipleship. In this paper, I will
explain how a healthy church is the goal for discipleship. In addition, I will examine my personal
church context and identify the top three areas that I need to focus on to create a healthier body of
Christ. Finally, I will discuss some initials steps that can be made to improve its spiritual health.
The Goal The apostle Paul refers to the church as the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 says,
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being
many, are one body: so also is Christ. The church is one body and all who are baptized are one in
Christ. Just as a body can and should be healthy, a church body can and should be healthy as
well. Putman et al. says that a healthy church looks and acts like a healthy body. While studying
to be a registered nurse years ago, I had the opportunity to dive deep into study of the systems of
the body. The body is tremendously complex and each system works with one another to make the
body function as a whole. If one part of the body is suffering, many times it negatively impacts
other parts of the body.

Macroeconomics In Cuba
Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to briefly evaluate the existing economic affairs of Cuba and how they
relate to the principles of macroeconomics. According to (Arnold, 2011) Macroeconomics involves
human activities and how they choose to perform in a very aggregate market as a whole
(Macroeconomics, 2011, p.18). An appraisal of Cuban s unemployment rate, government policies,
inflation, and national output in addition to other plausible variances will minutely expose some of
the many problems facing their economy. Cuba is just one of many islands amid the thousands all

That effort was short lived; only a little over 100,000 thousand was affected. This was not a natural
change in the sense of frictional unemployment but the government policies may be a result of
changes that they deem necessary due to market conditions.
With a current labor force of 5.2 million, the Cuban citizen s degree of economic distress would
perhaps be greater if not for the sense of preservation by Fidel Castro back in 1989 when the Soviet
Union collapsed. This event sends the Cuban economy in what was labeled the Special Period .
Fidel s communist government permitted some self employment, particularly in the transportation

Kant s powerful reasoning for moral atrocities.
Kant explains his moral theory, the categorical imperative, in Grounding for the metaphysics of
Morals . In this paper i will argue that Kantian reasoning provides the most powerful
understanding of how to assess and navigate moral dilemmas concerning atrocities when
compared to Utilitarianism. In order to effectively do so, i will be using a case by Bernard
Williams. The case by Williams in A critique of Utilitarianism, is as followed. Jim is in a small

the man in charge, explains that because of recent protest the ... Show more content on

Furthermore, i will provide an examination of what both utilitarianism and the categorical
imperative would do in this situation; beginning with utilitarianism. In Principles of Morals and
Legislation Jeremy Bentham outlines utilitarianism. The most important feature being the principle
of utility, Bentham believes that pleasure and pain governs all aspect of life, and one must do all
they can to reduce their pain and maximize their pleasure ( Bentham, 7) Bentham Develops the
Felicific calculator in order to quantitatively measure pain and pleasure in any given circumstance.
To adhere to this calculus, one ought to consider if the value of a pleasure or pain will be greater or
less according to: Intensity, duration, certainty, nearness, fecundity, purity, and extent (Bentham,
22). For an example, in Williams case one must consider the pleasure and pain involved in their
ability to be certain of the outcomes of their actions. If one cannot be sure that they can trust Pedro s
promise to let the nineteen hostages go, then this should be considered in the calculations of the
pleasures and pain of the consequences of their actions. Consequentialism is another key aspect to
utilitarianism. An action s morality is dependent on outcomes only. One s intentions does not really
matter. It becomes evidently clear from running the felicific calculus, consulting the principles of
utility and

What a Story Reveals about the Story Teller Essay
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales from the view of a pilgrim journeying with many
other travelers who all had tales to tell. I believe that the stories told by the characters in Chaucer
s book gives us insight into the individual spinning the tale as well as Chaucer as the inventor of
these characters and author of their stories. There are three main characters whose stories I will be
using as examples: The Knight s Tale, The Miller s Tale, and The Wife of Bath s Tale.
The knight told a tale of love, bravery, chivalry, justice, romance, and adventure. His story included
two cousins and sworn brothers, Palamon and Arcite, who were both enraptured by the love of one

his cause; and still had such devotion to his faith to join the pilgrimage. With smudges where his
armour had left mark; Just home from service, he had joined our ranks To do his pilgrimage and
render thanks (The Canterbury Tales, p.5). Thirdly, it shows us the knight s ideas of fortune and
justice. I believe the knight was optimistic in a practical sense. He viewed Fortune as a beneficial
force of justice which is reflected in his happy ending of the tale. Although he had a realistic note
of sadness, the overall outcome was good. All the characters prayed to different gods, and all got
what they asked for. Although Arcite wins Emily, he dies before he can claim her and she is later
married to Palamon. Lastly, the tale was constructed with such length and wordiness to convey the
intelligence and education of the speaker the Knight.
This story tells me that Chaucer holds the knight in high regard. As the creator of this character and
his tale, he displays his fondness of the characteristics which he attributes to the knight. Chaucer
uses many great adjectives to describe the knight in the general

Each ATM cell contains exactly 53 octets, 5 octets for header 48 octets for data. As a core
protocol, ATM is used in Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET)/Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH), which are backbone of Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) use Asynchronous Transfer Mode on their long distance private networks.
ATMs operate at the Layer 2 (Data Link layer) of the OSI model, over fiber cable or twisted pair
cable (http://www.wanredundancy.com).
The ATM transport hierarchy is shown in the figure below. The physical layer can be divided into
three functional levels:
Transmission Path Level: This extends between network elements that assemble and disassemble
the payload of a transmission system. For end to end communication, the payload is end user
information. For user to network communication, the payload may be call control signaling
information (call setup and call termination). Cell delineation and header error control functions are
required at the end points of each transmission path.
Digital Section Level: This refers to the exchanges or signal transfer points in a network that are
involved in switching data streams.
Regenerator Section Level: This is a part of the digital section.
Virtual Channels and Virtual Paths
Logical connections in ATM are referred to as virtual channels. A virtual channel is analogous to a

Samurai Beliefs
What image is conjured when the word samurai is heard? A picture of courageous warriors who
are experts at hand to hand combat and weapons such as the katana comes to mind. In fact, their
beginnings were humble, serving the great lords by protecting them, and in exchange samurais got
to be lords of their own land. Around the 12th century samurais rose to power backing up the
dictatorship and becoming powerful in the government and politics. (History.com Staff 2009) But
like any great warriorsamurais have beliefs like bushido or Shintoism and practices such as Zen
meditation.
One of the beliefs of the samurai is bushido, it means the way of the warrior. This code, bushido

Under the cheque truncation, the clearing of cheques are focused around the image and Magnetic

Boston has been the center of many acts of resistance to the taxation acts. In 1768, the Townshend

for a boycott of imported goods. On the night of March 5, 1770, Hugh White, a British soldier, was

Inequality In Education
Inequality Among Latinos in Academic Achievement in Higher Education
The Latino community has made strides forward when it comes to education. Adriana Kohler and
Melissa Lazarin, analysists for education reform for the National Council of La Raza, reports that
The growth of the Latino student population has significantly surpassed that of other ethnic/racial
groups (2). Even with these strides, the Latino community still faces obstacles in higher education.
Kohler and Lazarin further report that although Latino enrollment in institutions of higher
education has increased, Latinos are still less likely than non Latinos to be enrolled in or graduate
from college (10). It is important in understanding the obstacles that the Latino community face in
accessing higher education and through advocacy and legislation, help to support educational
achievement and resources to that effect.
These efforts have had a proven positive effect as to slowly changing the gender role orientations
favoring Latina women becoming more independent. It has created a shift from a traditional
housewife role to a more professional role and egalitarian view over the past few decades. This
shift has also created an issue that is underreported. Claudia Buchman from the Sociology

Prussian Military Reforms Essay
Innovation and Evolution:
Prussian Military Reforms of the 19th Century
The concept of war as a static and unchanging occurrence is an outdated and dangerous
miscalculation. More accurately, war is a fluidic, evolving and shifting phenomenon constantly
reinventing itself, rendering stagnant, inflexible principles potentially disastrous. Consequently, as
students of war and future players in this transforming theatre, the study of eras of significant
development is an extremely relevant pursuit. Recognizing the need for adaptation and the creation
of doctrine is now a prerequisite for any effective modern commander. War is unpredictable in
nature and particularly so in current theatres of operation, in which change is rapid ... Show more

These developments influenced most of the powerful nations of Europe and were soon repeated in
similar forms around the world. Furthermore, many of the Prussian enhancements in army doctrine
are the foundation of the command structures of many modern militaries today.
Although his armies enjoyed unprecedented successes and expanded the French Empire from
Spain to the steppes of Russia, the Napoleonic way of war was fraught with deficiencies. Due to
the Napoleon s genius and mastery of this period of military manoeuvres, he was able to forestall
the affects of the inherent limitations of his system until the war of the Sixth Coalition (1813)
and eventually the fateful battle of Waterloo (1815). One the most significant, intrinsic flaws in
Napoleon s system was related to issues of command. During the beginnings of Napoleon s
career, he commanded armies of sizes up to 60 000 troops. In Italy in 1796, he commanded a
force of just 38 000. With the increasing sizes of forces in the later empire, due to concepts such
as levee en masse and recruitment legislation of 1792, the inability of a single commander to
control such vast forces was becoming apparent. The sheer immensity of the forces now mustered
was unprecedented. In 1812 the Grande Armee, consisted of a staggering 611 000 soldiers. Much
to the hindrance of the later empire, few, if any officers in the Grande Armee, besides Napoleon
himself, could command forces

#9;Sweetness and Power is a historical study of sugar and its affect on society and economy since
it was first discovered. Sugar has had a large impact on society and the economy that is not
noticeable unless thoroughly studied. The following is an analysis of the work done by Sidney W.
Mintz in his attempt to enlighten the quot;educated layperson quot;.
#9;Mintz uses a very basic system for organizing the tremendous amount of data found within in the
book. The book is divided into 5 chapters: quot;Food, Sociality, and Sugarquot;, quot;Production

By then, sugar and consumer items like it had become too important to permit an archaic
protectionism to jeopardize future metropolitan supplies. Sugar surrendered its place as luxury and
rarity and became the first mass produced exotic necessity of a proletarian working class.
#9;Chapter three, the most lengthy chapter entitled quot;Consumption quot;, finishes the
discussion, first introduced in chapter two, of how sugar became less of a symbol of power and
more of a necessity for the common person. In chapter two, however, Mintz described this
change by relating it to the economy. In the third chapter, Mintz describes the change in a manner
relating it to societal values. Sugar s various purposes are described in great length, among which
included preservation, decoration, medicinal use, as well as a spice. Sugar as a sweetener was
given much of the credit for the shift of its use amongst various groups of people. Mintz writes on
page 108:
Sugar as a sweetener came to the fore in connection with these other exotic imports В– tea, coffee,
and chocolate В– of which one, tea, became and has since remained the most important
nonalcoholic beverages in the United Kingdom.

to increase. As the demand went up, so did the supply, causing

I think it is important to hockey because it will keep the fans entertained and the players will
have fun. It also provides a job to certain people who are willing to get hurt for their team. We
need it in the sport so it would be more entertaining for us to watch and other reasons. The whole
point of fighting in hockey is to make it more interesting then all of the other sports. It keep their
playersand fans on their feet when the see one happening because it is the most exciting part
about the sport. That s why teams hire people to just fight for the team and are willing to get a

Hockey is one of the only sports that will let contact like football or any other sports like those

I think we should allow fighting in hockey because it will make it the most unique sport out there.
The sport has ups and downs like people getting sent to the hospital because of how bad the fights
get but that is what keeps us into the sport even though someone is really hurt but he did it for his
fans and for protecting his team. The fighting is called Fisticuffs it is so that the refs and couched

Cinderella Compare and Contrast Essay
What goes around comes around, that s what people say. So all the pain you caused me will come
back to you someday (Unknown.) The theme of what goes around comes around is exemplified in
both the Grimm version and the Disney version of Cinderella, however the Grimm version
definitely exemplifies the theme more effectively than the Disney version does. The Grimm
version and the Disney version of Cinderella both include punishment to the stepsisters for how
they treated Cinderella and they both exemplify the theme. For example, in both versions, the

In contrast with the Grimm version, the punishment in the Disney version is more of an emotional
punishment. Whereas the Grimm version had a physical punishment. The only punishment for the
stepmother and stepsisters is that they just have to see Cinderella get what they wanted, which
was to marry the prince. This is extremely hard for them because that was what they wanted the
most and now they have to see their step sister and maid who was much too dirty to be seen
(Grimm) get what they wanted. They are probably also pretty angry and upset about what
happened. It is noticeable in the film that they are all furious that Cinderella got to become the
princess. The Disney version made this the only punishment in the story because the punishment
in the Grimm version was too gory. The Disney movie is directed towards children so they could
not make it too gory, but they also had to teach the lesson. This version did a good job
exemplifying the theme, however the punishment in the Grimm version is just more effective, as
noted before. In the Grimm version, there is also extra punishment for the stepmother as well. The
stepmother now has to tend to her daughters and provide special care for them now because they
cannot walk. She talked her daughters into cutting parts of their feet off because When you are
queen you will no longer have to go on foot (Grimm.) Therefore, they cannot walk anymore and

The French Revolution During The Late 18th Century And...
Introduction Why there was a revolution in France in the late 18th century and what were the
ideas that drove it? The French Revolution is described as an era of philosophical, political as
well as social turmoil in the socio political history of France and the whole of Europe. During the
time, the French polity went through radical transformation to forms that are based on
Enlightenment principles of antimonarchism, nationality as well as rights. These
transformations were complemented by fierce chaos which included executions and
suppression during the error of terror and warfare that involved other key European power. The
revolution was at first a major rebellion against power of the sovereign against the citizens
liberties and fortune of the elite and was enacted in the name of freedom, fairness as well as
fraternity. In real sense it resulted to the loss of freedom, despotism and patriotism. France
revolution was based on abhorrence of custom and aspiration to utilize the power of the state in
the creation of a novel order. The folks were issues with new identifications as citizens of the
freshly established state. To destroy the resistance of revolution and the freshly formed order,
about 40,000 individuals were killed. The revolution was not able to come up with a strong system
of supremacy, and in the subsequent century, France would be ruled variously as a democracy,
despotism, a legitimate realm and two different territories and under a dozen diverse

Pepsi Of Coca Cola And Pepsi
As far as marketers are concerned, there are few American companies with marketing campaigns

enough to inspire countless business to model their own companies after these icons. This paper

considering what mistakes have been made in their pursuit of success. Learning from the

globe.(c). This plan is said to sustainable, because once the outside parties, investors and
professionals have put the processes in place or order. These processes have to then teach to the
ordinary people and locals making sure the work can continue. The concerns with this strategy
would be the education of the people around the sites and at schools, i.e. the interpretation of the
message determined by different monies and pay values. The communication of the facts and
figures in relation to the rest of the world and the meeting of targets. Also the desire of the
peoples looking still to profit from the original issue. (d). This article is taken from the guardian in
London and would probably have been written for the purposes of publicity and enlightenment. It
would have been written to make people aware of the area and its issues. To analyse what is good
and bad about it, putting it in context with other similar issues around

Reaction Paper Of Love And Dust
Reaction paper of Of love and dust
While I was reading the Of love and dust, I was astonished by the use of silent between white and
black, between black and black, and between black and church. And that remind me of Cash s
description of the relation between white and black in his The Mind of the South. Cash declared:
The relationship between two groups [black and white] was, by the second generation at least,
nothing less than organic. Negro entered into white man as profoundly as white man entered into
Negro (Cash 49 50). The novel is an example to Cash s study about the social interaction between
black people and white people in the South. Also his argues that the black of the South does not
rebel for being inferior. They accept the bossy treatment of the white for them; they obey them
and never rebel for the abuse white master had for them. They believe it s the way that god want
them to be and only way to survive. In the story, Pauline is a black slave who is moved from
working in the field for Bonbon to become his maid at home. Although Pauline does not like
Bonbon, yet she agrees to work in his house. Furthermore, she accepts his affair with her, and they
end up with having twin sons. Bonbon does not agree to have his illegitimate twin son under his
name. They call them by the mother s family name. Even though, Pauline accepts the relation with
Bonbon for long time without having feeling toward him, yet she ends up loving him after long
period.

The Works Of Langston Hughes And The Harlem Renaissance
Langston Hughes was one of the most significant writers and scholars of the Harlem Renaissance,
which was the African American artistic movement in the 1920s that celebrated black life and
culture. Hughes s creative brilliance was swayed by his life in New York City s Harlem, a mainly
African American region. His historical works helped form American literature and politics. Hughes
just like others active in the Harlem Renaissancehad a robust sense of racial vanity. Through his
poetry, novels, plays, essays, and children s books, he endorsed equality, convicted racism and
prejudice, and celebrated African Americanprinciples, humor, and holiness. Hughes took a diverse
and flamboyant background to his writing. Before he was twelve years old he had lived in six
different American cities. When his first book was published, he had already been a truck farmer,
cook, waiter, college graduate,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of Hughes s most powerful and keen poems. It comprises exceptionally strong
metaphors and thematic content, lecturing the social role of biracial children in ghettoized
America, father and son relations, and the continuing heritage of slavery. Mulatto performed as
part of Fine Clothes to the Jew, a collection of Hughes s poetry that was published in 1925. Hughes
inscribes from the voice of several different appeals, and the arrangement of the poem is vital to
understanding the language each character speaks .
Mulatto starts with a son declaring to his birth father, I am your son, white man! A third voice,
either the son or an outside neighbor, describes the scene in the woods against the Georgia dusk.
The father, responding to his son s repeated cry, exclaims, Like hell! The storyteller defines the
moon rising in the Southern night, which is filled with yellow stars. The moon perhaps signifies
the white father and the stars his many yellow bastard

The Photographic Representation Of One Building
Many famous architects have had their architecture promoted using photographs carefully
constructed by a favourite photographer of theirs. Le Corbusier had Lucien HervГ©. The well
known American photographer, Julius Shulman produced iconic photography of the Stahl house or
Case Study House #22 by Pierre Koenig. Choose Le Corbusier, Koenig or another famous modern
architect (It need not be an architect mentioned in the lecture course) and their photographer.
Explain how they met, the architect s philosophy and the photographer s philosophy to represent
the architect s work, on the way, explaining how the two collaborated to publicise the architecture.

This essentially comes across as the ideal team for promotion.
We can clearly outline the beginning of their strong relationship through the first letter sent by
Corbusier, complementing HervГ©:
Not only your remarkable vision of my work makes it more complete, but you have the soul of an
architect and know exactly how to look at architecture. Corbusier (Voyatzis, 2015)
This outlines HervГ© eye that Corbusier picked up on. His use of Soul of an Architect explores that
connection between the two artists through the understanding of one another by the first glance;
after HervГ© photographed 650 of UnitГ© d Habitation, and sent them to Corbusier, it was the
search that Corbusier waited for, finally finding his photographer who shared and understood what
he needed. It this especial relationship between Corbusier and HervГ© that symbolised dependence
and an element of education between two unique individuals.
The symbiotic relationship between photographers and architects at the time had a lot more
meaning than just the photographers being used for marketing, (Redstone, 2014)

Health Of Health And Wellbeing
Health, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1946), is the state of complete
physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . Alternate
definitions include a dynamic state of well being characterised by a physical and mental potential,
which satisfies the demands of life commensurate with age, culture, and personal responsibility
(Birscher, 2005). Healthand wellbeing statistics are vital information as an indicator of the health of
the nation. The statistics produced are observed to vary between countries as different methods and
standards of measures are applied. The extent of measurement also depends on the social awareness
of the implications of health and wellbeing.
One measure of health and wellbeing looks at the average life expectancy and mortality rates of
the population. Most countries use this measure as it is easily accessible through hospital records
and self reporting health (SRH) surveys. One of the most frequently used health status indicators,
life expectancy at birth is defined by the estimated life span of a newborn, on average, if current
mortality rates are unchanged. However, the actual age specific mortality rate of any particular birth
cohort cannot be known in advance. If rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life
expectancy calculated using current mortality rates. Improvements in life expectancy at birth can
be attributed to a number of factors rising living

Border Security Essay
There are tons and tons of the supposed problems with immigration like, the threat to the U.S.
economy. But one of many big problems with immigration is the security problems it creates. The
security problems they make pose no direct security threat, but millions of undocumented migrants
being in the United Statesdistort the law, distracts resources, and it makes an effective cover for
terrorists and criminals. The solution for this problem focuses exclusively on border security. Many
people believe immigrationhas been a problem for a long time, but it become a matter of national
security shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. After the attacks, the George W.
Bush administration changed the role of immigration agencies, including them in a strategy to
combat terrorism. The Department of Homeland security took over jurisdiction of Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE). At that point immigrants were established as a threat to internal
security. There is many solutions to this growing problem but the best way is to maintain and
increase the efforts to enhance border security.Congress and The Department of Homeland Security
has explored a number of solutions to threats at our borders, like illicit drugs to illegal immigration.

there is alway the possibility that it would not work. Some problems are that the immigrants could
came into the United States by plane, so because of that border patrol can t stop them coming into
the U.S. Since the border is being watched most of the immigrants would start coming in by plane
and that would make a big problem. We can overcome these problems by making people on planes
show their papers to authorized personnel. That would stop or mostly stop illegal immigrants
coming into the country and making security

Analysis Of The Infinite Nature Of God
Cleanthes argument from design in Dialogues concerning Natural Religion is trying to prove that
there is a deity which exists and which is similar to humans in our mind and intelligence. This
argument from design can be dated back to Plato and later, Aquinas in the Summa Theologica .
Cleanthes However, Cleanthes argument does not fully prove that the deity is a theological
Christian Godas it does not prove his omniscience and his omnipotent nature shown in biblical
texts. The infinite nature of God is also unstable as it is not fully proven and therefore can easily
be criticised. The argument is therefore providing a necessary but not sufficient condition for a
theological God.
Cleanthes argument is structured with two propositions which lead to a logical conclusion. The
first proposition is that things made by us seem to have a specific purpose which suggests a
creator. This is followed by the universe appearing to have a purpose so therefore the universe
must have a creator. This argument relies heavily on an analogy which is comparing our everyday
lives and experiences within the world and universe to the origin of the world and how it was
originally created. The intricate fitting of means to ends throughout all nature is just like (though
more wonderful than) the fitting of means to ends in things that have been produced by us products
of human designs, thought, wisdom, and intelligence. Since the effects resemble each other, we are
led to infer by all the rules

Photographs Capture Time And Create Meaning
Photographs capture time and create meaning. Mark Klett s Under the Dark Cloth , is a simple,
yet compelling piece of art which captures his experience in Monument Valley, Arizona on May
27th, 1989. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett
s point of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the
image. Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett s piece does this on two planes.
In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of
an image. She defines semiotics as the study of signs and their use or interpretation, or, how
images make meaning (pg. 75). Under close inspection of Mark Klett s Under ... Show more content

Another question could be looked at through the lens of positional communication . Who is
positioned as superior and who inferior? (pg. 82). The photographer makes the audience feel as if
they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This
allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature.
The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation,
and reflection. Klett s use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within
Klett s photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented.
The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic
image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it
is a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole.
The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a
camera you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under
the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing
a photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign
is a moment of silence and critical reflection.
The symbols which are presented in the photograph include the camera, watch, and the style of the
photograph.

Education in America Essays
Education in America
Education in the United States is a very crucial part of a person s life. Going to school opens doors
and facilitates the pathway for future individual achievement and economic success. Formal
education is a conscious effort by human society to convey the skills and modes of thought
considered essential for social functioning.
According to the census 2000, the total number of people in school between nursery and high
school is approximately 57 million. Out of those 57 million, roughly 49 million are in public school.
In students 15 17 years old, 30.8 % are below the modal grade. Furthermore, between 10 through 12
graders the annual dropout rate is 4.7%. Continuing education to the college level is a very ... Show

Today, however, it seems as if the public has lost track of the importance of a great educational
system. The main issue today s public schools faces are funding problems. There is not enough
money allocated to support the growing needs of school across the nation.
Most of the other problems the schools face are directly related to the funding issue. Buildings
are run down and sometimes mobile because of the lack of finances. No child wants to go to
school in a dreary building that smells bad. It makes it hard to concentrate and hard to study in
buildings such as this. Every school has some type of sport being played by the students. For
some, sports are the only reason they do not drop out of school. However, if finances are not
available then the school should focus mostly on the education of all of its students as a whole,
not just a few who think they cannot make it without sports. Without the financial issues, schools
have even more problems. School violence is becoming more and more common. School should
be a place where children come to learn and be with their peers, in a very good environment. It
should not be a place where children are afraid to go because of the anger or hurt of other children.
This is probably the major issue of the public today.
No matter what the issue, schools have important issues that they have to work around and with
everyday to

Modern Heroine By Kate Chopin
Modern Heroine A heroine to me is often an average woman in an unexpected situation, which,
despite the odds being piled against her, she usually overcomes in the end. In today s culture,
women have overcome many difficulties to be able to work, teach, vote, have a voice in the
government, and even are CEOs. Some people believe that some of these achievements are because
of examples that come from literature that have led women to believe in, motivate, and stand up for
themselves. In literature the amount of the things that a womanprotagonist can do has also
changed. Back in the 1800s women characters, whether fictional or not, could not be portrayed as
rebellious, working, or even sexual beings. Of course there were some authors that did not follow
these rules and they were not being published. Others, instead, wrote their works in a way that
would be accepted by society rules, however, they were still making strong minded women
protagonists. One of these very famous authors is Kate Chopin. In every short storyor novel her
main character was a female. Not many writers during the mid to late 19th century were bold
enough to address subjects that Chopin took on. Some of Chopin s work could not be published
until years after her death because of the strong themes that she knew would not be accepted in the
world she lived in back then but she just wrote life as she saw it. Chopins short stories are all very
different but one thing they have in common is the

Argumentative Essay On Deep Brain Stimulators
There are many illnesses, pertaining to both medical and psychological, that affect the health and
wellbeing of countless other people. Some examples of these types of diseases would be
Parkinson s disease and obsessive compulsive disorder. While the effects of the disease can be
suppressed by pharmaceutical means, there comes a point when medicine is simply not enough.
This in turn led to the usage of deep brain stimulators to help ameliorate problems that medicine
could not. Although implementing deep brain stimulators is a new procedure that has been in
practice since over twenty years ago, many experts agree that using them is not a panacea because
there can be many problems from them. Since deep brain stimulators are recently new in the
medical field, there are positive and negative effects still being discovered. To begin with,
according to an article written by Lyons, MD, Deep brain stimulation(DBS) has developed during
the past 20 years as a remarkable treatment option for several... Show more content on

change in Parkinson s disease occurs (Okun 2012). There are many adverse effects from having
deep brain stimulators implanted; the two that stand out are infection and intracranial hemorrhage.
These are a major problem as they can be the reason why deep brain stimulators are removed.
While deep brain stimulators can be very helpful, the safeness and outcome are not set in stone and

  • 2. Antidepressants And The Monoamine Theory Of Depression 1.Introduction 1.1. Depression: definition, symptoms and classification Depression is defined by the DSM IV as a mental disorder characterized by sustained depression of mood, anhedonia, sleep and appetite disturbances, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and hopelessness. Depressive symptoms such as the mere inability to experience pleasure and loss of energy persisting for longer than two weeks are usually enough to indicate an affective disorder (Hirschfeld 2014). There are significant variations in presentations and diagnosis criteria, but regardless of the classification of depressive states (Major (Unipolar), Bipolar, Dysthymia, Atypical, SAD, Postpartum), it is agreed upon that pharmacological interventions are sometimes required: to alleviate debilitating symptoms and improve patients quality of life. The interest in depression medications reflects the gravity of the disease i.e. its ability to psychologically impair lives and lead to suicide. 1.2. • 3. Essay On English Reflection Semester One English Reflection August 17, 2017; also known as my first day of officially naming myself a high school student at Lindbergh High School. I walked into my fourth hour, English 1 Honors, not knowing what I would encounter within the next four months of my academic career. English (until now) remained my best and most favorite subject ever since I could remember, however, this year I began to feel the challenge I have always needed, especially with the new grading system. Standard based grading consists of grading each individual category us students consistently remain expected to learn, and master this year. Categories like speaking and listening, reading, writing, and habits of learning . Throughout semester one, I showed an increase of my weaknesses within the categories of speaking and listening and habits of learning while I showed an increase of my strengths in the categories reading and writing. To begin, the first semester of my high school experience as a whole seemed very stressful. By this I mean, completing my work along with adapting to listening to the new teaching styles and getting over my biggest fear speaking in front of the class. Although, anything takes time to get used to, English illustrates a perfect example. As I stated before, the standard based grading system needed some time to get used to, along with the expectations and requirements of honors versus regular. As time went on, my grades show that I never really got used to this. During term one, my habits of learning average ended with an average of 91%. At this time, I realized the level of difficulty English would endure, so I put more effort into it... at the time. During term two, my habits of learning average went down to a 76%. The biggest reason, while in English there consisted a large amount of classwork, it meant an increased amount of classwork for other classes as well. After reviewing this, I feel very disappointed with how my efforts towards academic responsibility weakened, making one of my goals to put forth more effort during semester two. As I said before, high school alone pulled out a magnificent amount of stress, not helped by one of my weakest categories ever since I started school consisted of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Impact Of Tourism On Economic And Social Development Programs Tourism is integrated in economic and social development programs and can be considered as a method to protect the natural and social capital upon which the industry is built (McCool and Moisey 2001 and Hunter 1997). According to Robinson (1999 cited in McCool 2002), tourism is viewed as a tool which is sometimes might be important to a community and other times not so important. Therefore, it is not said that protecting cultures for the value of the tourism industry, but for the value to the people. The carrying capacitystudies began during the 1930 s (O Reilly, 1986; Saveriades, 2000), they were principally developed in the 1960 s in the national parks of the United States of America (McCool and Lime, 2001; Manning ., 2002). Johnson and Thomas (1996) argue that present interest in tourism capacity is due to growth in tourism combined with increasing awareness of environmental issues. The concept is particularly important in the coastal zone which is undergoing rapid change as a result of demographic changes and industrialization (see Kay and Alder, 1999, p. 21) in the context of global climate and sea level change. In its broadest sense, carrying capacity refers to the ability of a system to support an activity or feature at a given level. In the coastal zone, these systems can vary greatly in both scale and type, and range from small salt marshes through large beach resorts to entire continental coasts. The activities or features that they support are also varied and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Symbolism In John Irving s A Prayer For Owen Meany Symbolism is often shown in John Irving s A Prayer for Owen Meany through recurring topics such as armlessness. From Owen amputating the armadillos claws, to Owen being obsessed with amputations in general, this topic foreshadows Owen s death, and helps build the theme of destiny and fate. Irving uses armlessness to symbolize helplessness and loss of something very important to a person. At the start of the novel, after Owen s foul ball killed Tabitha, John gives Owen his armadillo to show Owen that he still loves him. When Owen returned the armadillo, the claws were missing because Owen amputated them. Owen explains that Dan, John, and himself all lost a part of them just like the armadillo lost his claws. Owen had meant to say that God had taken his hands and that he believed he was an instrument of God. GOD HAS TAKEN YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS. I AM GOD S INSTRUMENT. (90) Owen used his arms to throw the foul ball that killed Tabitha. He amputated the armadillo s claws to show John and Dan that when they lost Tabitha, they both lost something important to them just as the claws of an armadillo were important to the animal. This quote also foreshadows how Owen dies, and how God put him on the Earth to fulfill a God given task. As the novel continues, John recalls a memory of Owen and him having a sleepover. At that sleepover Owen felt very sick, so he went to go ask John s mother, Tabitha for help. When Owen walked into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Importance Of Education In Immigrant Students Compared with the native born students, immigrant student success rate is significantly lower. Many immigrant children who struggle to reach their optimum levels in school because of language barriers, acculturation, and lack of resources at home. This problem is affecting thousands of young immigrant studentis a negative way. When students newly come the United States, they have a difficult time with learning the English language and adapting to the way that schools work. What programs can schools implement to help immigrant student to ensure success in their new environment? The first article I researched was, I m Telling You...The Language Barrier Is the Most, the Biggest Challenge : Barriers to Education among Karen Refugee Women in Australia (2012) by Paula Watkins, Husna Razee, and Juliet Richters. The authors discussed about how language proficiency is a prerequisite for economic, political, social and cultural integration (126). It made me aware that in order to fit into a new culture you have to be able to understand them politically, economically, and socially. The authors support this claim by doing a case study with female immigrants from Burma to see how the lack of English proficiency effects them social, economically, politically, and culturally (129 133). Their data and findings from the case study showed that to be able to blend into a new society and culture you need to not just be English proficient, but also have to know the environment that it ... • 9. Lord Chesterfield Character Analysis In Lord Chesterfield s letter to his son, he attempts to shape him into a respectable man worthy of inheriting the family wealth in ways that can still be recognized in parenting today. In modern times, parents put a high value on grades and schooling; Chesterfield chides his son to take more care in his accumulation of knowledge. Respect is also key, parents still demand the same respect from their children as Chesterfield expects from his son. Another thing that parents will often say is to learn from their mistakes which is something Chesterfield places high value on. The things Chesterfield tries to pass on in this letter to his son say a lot about his personal values, namely, the value he places on respect, education, and decision making. Throughout his letter, Lord Chesterfield makes small, passive aggressive remarks that hint underhandedly at the repercussions should his son choose not to respect what he is saying. He threatens that his young son can not have a shilling in the world but from [him] (27 28). Here, Chesterfield warns that he will not be allowed even a little bit of the family s fortune unless he gives it to him. Basically, Chesterfield is exposing the complete dependency his son has on him due to their aristocratic status. This also alludes to respect because if his son does not respect him, he will quiet literally have nothing. Additionally, Chesterfield is convinced [his son] will act right (32) not because he threatened him with what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Four hundred and six dolphins lost their lives during the eighty seven day plague (Clean Energy, 1). The bird population of the Gulf decreased as well (Clean Energy, 1). Some of the birds were cloaked with oil (Clean Energy, 1). Thousands of dead and suffering birds were seen floating in the black pools of oil (Clean Energy, 1). Six thousand one hundred and twenty four birds died as a result of the Gulf oil spill (Clean Energy, 1). However birds and dolphins were not the only victims (Clean Energy, 1). The British Petroleum oil spill destroyed a portion of the sea turtle population found in the Gulf of Mexico (Clean Energy, 1). • 11. how technology has changed Melissa Sandoval English 52 / 6 750pm 2/18/2014 How technology has changed Technology today, has allowed us to connect with people with ease, and has made many tasks so much easier. From desktops to IPhones, the world we live in today allows us to communicate with anybody with wireless access with just a couple clicks of a mouse. As civilization has evolved so has technology, from letters to phone calls to email, basic communication methods have consistently progressed into the complex system we have today. As we become more dependent on technological communication, such improvements will continue to be made. First of all, imagine attempting to live the way we do today, to the way we use to live a decade ago. I remember having to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems hard these days to fathom the original size of computers and how small they have become in the last ten years, but within the last five they have become even smaller and somehow more powerful and faster than ever! For the past decade or so, technology has transformed the way we communicate, the days are gone where we had to write letters and mail them out and wait a week for our friends and family to receive them now, we can just email and within seconds they receive our letters. Long distance phone calls are also unnecessary for anyone with a computer, a webcam and a speedy internet connection is all you need now. Cell phones are a huge advantage for us because we can now place calls to anyone in the world no matter where we are at, we no longer have to wait until we get home or look for a phone booth to place emergency phone calls. One of the disadvantages of all this technology we have is that it has made our society somewhat impersonal. For instance, instead of communicating with my customers at work over the phone, I can now just communicate with them through e mail or through instant messaging. As a result, it is difficult to tell if one of my customers is upset. Technology also tends to make communication drag out more than it has to, sometimes it s quicker to just get out of your seat and walk to the person, or just simply pick up the phone. To conclude, I believe in technology, and I completely support it but only to an extent. I say, go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Educator Training Essay Educator Training Regardless of the years of athletic experience among a team of coaches and teachers, an active training program will help staff members to stay informed about the psychological dimensions of student athletes; thereby applying the first tenet of SLT. Smith and Smoll examined the effects of providing positive athletic setting resulting in a 30 5% reduction in athlete dropout rates. I appreciate the fact these results were equally positive among both boy and girl teams, because its success gives credence to the need to provide Teachers and coaches with training to mold their own behavior first in creating positive settings. If a student has been modeling poor character, he needs to know that he has the power to turn his behavior around with tools, such as imagery. With this technique, a student is guided to remember situations and imagines making better choices with better outcomes. Smith and Smoll s study indicates that the sooner imagery occurs after an incident, the stronger are its effects. Author, coach, and father, Mike James tells his athletes that negative thoughts will creep in from time to time; however, the key is whether we submit to these thoughts and emotions and let them control us or whether we exercise our freedom of choice as respond a different way (James, 2017, p. 236). Inspirational tools include allowing coaches to be social agents who label positive sporting behavior, and practicing mental skills for improving moral reasoning. And when detrimental actions occur, be prepared, because conduct issues will arise. Managing Conduct Issues How coaches react to conduct issues can create positive learning opportunities, promote character development, and create an opportunity to apply all the tenets of SLT. Begin with assessing the student and content to develop fair and clearly defined guidelines and consequences. A Not-so-Secret Escape A Not So Secret Escape If you were to ask someone twenty years ago what camping is all about, they would immediately tell you about campfires, sleeping bags, and how the stars shine brightly at night. However, today s outlook on camping has changed completely. It involves a motor home which includes a kitchen and a modern day shower located on a campground just a few feet away from access to the Internet. Sure it is nice not to have to leave anything behind while on your campingtrip, but you re really not camping. Real camping is dirty, simple, and breathtaking. It involves sleeping on the ground with just a thin layer separating you from the freezing, soft soil filled with insects ready to climb on top of your warm body. Camping is taking hour long walks, exploring the scenery that surrounds you while avoiding the dangers in the forest. To experience real camping, one should work hard for their food, warmth, and comfort. Even though camping in a four wheeled home with all the daily amenities is easier than camping that involves secluding yourself in the middle of the forest, it doesn t reveal one of camping s greatest attributes: an escape from the busy society in which we live today. As a kid, I never really enjoyed going camping with my family. The way I looked at it, it took away time from my games and the luxury of indoor plumbing. • 16. A Note On Subprime Loans Recent mayhem in the American economy attributed to a weakening of business regulation. In the absence of oversight, lending became a wildcat enterprise. Mortgage brokers easily deceived home buyers by promoting subprime loans, and then they passed on bundled documents to unwary investors. These subprime loans were offered at a rate above prime to individuals who did not qualify for prime rate loans. The loans were made to people who had no other way to access funds, and little understanding of the mechanics of the loan. Subprime loans commonly have adjustable rates that have monthly payments that will dramatically increase two years after receiving the loan. • 17. Discipleship Research Paper Introduction Making disciples is the all encompassing purpose of the church. Many churches do a tremendous amount of work toward the goal of making disciples, but sometimes it is in an unhealthy manner. Just as a healthy person is going to have the most positive productivity in life, a healthy church will also have the most constructive output of discipleship. In this paper, I will explain how a healthy church is the goal for discipleship. In addition, I will examine my personal church context and identify the top three areas that I need to focus on to create a healthier body of Christ. Finally, I will discuss some initials steps that can be made to improve its spiritual health. The Goal The apostle Paul refers to the church as the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 says, For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. The church is one body and all who are baptized are one in Christ. Just as a body can and should be healthy, a church body can and should be healthy as well. Putman et al. says that a healthy church looks and acts like a healthy body. While studying to be a registered nurse years ago, I had the opportunity to dive deep into study of the systems of the body. The body is tremendously complex and each system works with one another to make the body function as a whole. If one part of the body is suffering, many times it negatively impacts other parts of the body. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Furthermore, i will provide an examination of what both utilitarianism and the categorical imperative would do in this situation; beginning with utilitarianism. In Principles of Morals and Legislation Jeremy Bentham outlines utilitarianism. The most important feature being the principle of utility, Bentham believes that pleasure and pain governs all aspect of life, and one must do all they can to reduce their pain and maximize their pleasure ( Bentham, 7) Bentham Develops the Felicific calculator in order to quantitatively measure pain and pleasure in any given circumstance. To adhere to this calculus, one ought to consider if the value of a pleasure or pain will be greater or less according to: Intensity, duration, certainty, nearness, fecundity, purity, and extent (Bentham, 22). For an example, in Williams case one must consider the pleasure and pain involved in their ability to be certain of the outcomes of their actions. If one cannot be sure that they can trust Pedro s promise to let the nineteen hostages go, then this should be considered in the calculations of the pleasures and pain of the consequences of their actions. Consequentialism is another key aspect to utilitarianism. An action s morality is dependent on outcomes only. One s intentions does not really matter. • 22. What a Story Reveals about the Story Teller Essay Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales from the view of a pilgrim journeying with many other travelers who all had tales to tell. I believe that the stories told by the characters in Chaucer s book gives us insight into the individual spinning the tale as well as Chaucer as the inventor of these characters and author of their stories. There are three main characters whose stories I will be using as examples: The Knight s Tale, The Miller s Tale, and The Wife of Bath s Tale. The knight told a tale of love, bravery, chivalry, justice, romance, and adventure. His story included two cousins and sworn brothers, Palamon and Arcite, who were both enraptured by the love of one woman, Emily. Emily was related to king Theseus who had ... Palamon and Arcite were not willing to give up Emily to the other, although they had been great friends. The devotion lies not in their friendship, but in their love of Emily. Likewise, the knight himself had left all to nobly fight for his cause; and still had such devotion to his faith to join the pilgrimage. With smudges where his armour had left mark; Just home from service, he had joined our ranks To do his pilgrimage and render thanks (The Canterbury Tales, p.5). Thirdly, it shows us the knight s ideas of fortune and justice. I believe the knight was optimistic in a practical sense. He viewed Fortune as a beneficial force of justice which is reflected in his happy ending of the tale. Although he had a realistic note of sadness, the overall outcome was good. All the characters prayed to different gods, and all got what they asked for. Although Arcite wins Emily, he dies before he can claim her and she is later married to Palamon. Lastly, the tale was constructed with such length and wordiness to convey the intelligence and education of the speaker the Knight. This story tells me that Chaucer holds the knight in high regard. As the creator of this character and his tale, he displays his fondness of the characteristics which he attributes to the knight. Due to the Napoleon s genius and mastery of this period of military manoeuvres, he was able to forestall the affects of the inherent limitations of his system until the war of the Sixth Coalition (1813) and eventually the fateful battle of Waterloo (1815). One the most significant, intrinsic flaws in Napoleon s system was related to issues of command. During the beginnings of Napoleon s career, he commanded armies of sizes up to 60 000 troops. In Italy in 1796, he commanded a force of just 38 000. With the increasing sizes of forces in the later empire, due to concepts such as levee en masse and recruitment legislation of 1792, the inability of a single commander to control such vast forces was becoming apparent. The sheer immensity of the forces now mustered was unprecedented. In 1812 the Grande Armee, consisted of a staggering 611 000 soldiers. The fighting is called Fisticuffs it is so that the refs and couched will not interfere with the fighting and so they can just fight out their differences so that the game can go on. The two players that are fighting will get in some sort of trouble they might not be able to play some of the next game because their couches might not let them until they think they are ready to play without getting into anymore ... The theme of what goes around comes around is exemplified in both the Grimm version and the Disney version of Cinderella, however the Grimm version definitely exemplifies the theme more effectively than the Disney version does. The Grimm version and the Disney version of Cinderella both include punishment to the stepsisters for how they treated Cinderella and they both exemplify the theme. For example, in both versions, the stepsisters do not get to what they want, which is to marry the prince and for Cinderella not to be happy. In contrast with the Grimm version, the punishment in the Disney version is more of an emotional punishment. Whereas the Grimm version had a physical punishment. The only punishment for the stepmother and stepsisters is that they just have to see Cinderella get what they wanted, which was to marry the prince. This is extremely hard for them because that was what they wanted the most and now they have to see their step sister and maid who was much too dirty to be seen (Grimm) get what they wanted. They are probably also pretty angry and upset about what happened. It is noticeable in the film that they are all furious that Cinderella got to become the princess. The Disney version made this the only punishment in the story because the punishment in the Grimm version was too gory. The Disney movie is directed towards children so they could not make it too gory, but they also had to teach the lesson. This version did a good job exemplifying the theme, however the punishment in the Grimm version is just more effective, as noted before. In the Grimm version, there is also extra punishment for the stepmother as well. The stepmother now has to tend to her daughters and provide special care for them now because they cannot walk. The French Revolution is described as an era of philosophical, political as well as social turmoil in the socio political history of France and the whole of Europe. • 39. Pepsi Of Coca Cola And Pepsi As far as marketers are concerned, there are few American companies with marketing campaigns that rival those of Coca Cola and Pepsi. The longevity and prosperity of these two competitors is enough to inspire countless business to model their own companies after these icons. This paper will detail some of the business aspects that have helped Coke and Pepsi to thrive, as well as considering what mistakes have been made in their pursuit of success. Learning from the successes and failures of other companies can help a new business to know which roads of marketing, expansion, etc. to explore and which might best be avoided. One might first consider Coca Cola, a company which has been trademarked since 1886. While the business has gone through many changes over the years, the Coca Cola name has remained and is now recognizable around the world. Coca Cola is not only the name of the company, which makes a variety of products including the soda that is its namesake. When it comes to targeting the current consumer, Coca Cola finds that their product is most popular among the older crowd (marketing considers as older anyone over age 35). (Turner). Some of the most valuable brands in that particular demographic are Coca Cola, Microsoft, GE, IBM, Starbucks and Apple (Turner). Health Of Health And Wellbeing Health, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1946), is the state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity . Alternate definitions include a dynamic state of well being characterised by a physical and mental potential, which satisfies the demands of life commensurate with age, culture, and personal responsibility (Birscher, 2005). Healthand wellbeing statistics are vital information as an indicator of the health of the nation. The statistics produced are observed to vary between countries as different methods and standards of measures are applied. The extent of measurement also depends on the social awareness of the implications of health and wellbeing. One measure of health and wellbeing looks at the average life expectancy and mortality rates of the population. Most countries use this measure as it is easily accessible through hospital records and self reporting health (SRH) surveys. One of the most frequently used health status indicators, life expectancy at birth is defined by the estimated life span of a newborn, on average, if current mortality rates are unchanged. However, the actual age specific mortality rate of any particular birth cohort cannot be known in advance. If rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life expectancy calculated using current mortality rates. • 47. Analysis Of The Infinite Nature Of God Cleanthes argument from design in Dialogues concerning Natural Religion is trying to prove that there is a deity which exists and which is similar to humans in our mind and intelligence. This argument from design can be dated back to Plato and later, Aquinas in the Summa Theologica . Cleanthes However, Cleanthes argument does not fully prove that the deity is a theological Christian Godas it does not prove his omniscience and his omnipotent nature shown in biblical texts. The infinite nature of God is also unstable as it is not fully proven and therefore can easily be criticised. The argument is therefore providing a necessary but not sufficient condition for a theological God. Cleanthes argument is structured with two propositions which lead to a logical conclusion. The first proposition is that things made by us seem to have a specific purpose which suggests a creator. This is followed by the universe appearing to have a purpose so therefore the universe must have a creator. This argument relies heavily on an analogy which is comparing our everyday lives and experiences within the world and universe to the origin of the world and how it was originally created. The intricate fitting of means to ends throughout all nature is just like (though more wonderful than) the fitting of means to ends in things that have been produced by us products of human designs, thought, wisdom, and intelligence. This allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature. The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation, and reflection. Klett s use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within Klett s photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented. The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. Modern Heroine By Kate Chopin Modern Heroine A heroine to me is often an average woman in an unexpected situation, which, despite the odds being piled against her, she usually overcomes in the end. In today s culture, women have overcome many difficulties to be able to work, teach, vote, have a voice in the government, and even are CEOs. Some people believe that some of these achievements are because of examples that come from literature that have led women to believe in, motivate, and stand up for themselves. In literature the amount of the things that a womanprotagonist can do has also changed. Back in the 1800s women characters, whether fictional or not, could not be portrayed as rebellious, working, or even sexual beings. Of course there were some authors that did not follow these rules and they were not being published. Others, instead, wrote their works in a way that would be accepted by society rules, however, they were still making strong minded women protagonists. One of these very famous authors is Kate Chopin. In every short storyor novel her main character was a female. Not many writers during the mid to late 19th century were bold enough to address subjects that Chopin took on. Some of Chopin s work could not be published until years after her death because of the strong themes that she knew would not be accepted in the world she lived in back then but she just wrote life as she saw it.
