Bob Dylan Similes
Among the American folk music, the name Bob Dylan is murmured with hushed respect ( Getting
To Dylan 1986 documentary ). Bob Dylan, originally named Robert Allen Zimmerman was born
on May 24, 1941. At the age of eighteen, Bob Dylan attended the University of Minnesota, where
he sought interest in music. Influenced by the blues, country, and rock and roll, he began playing
music as a teenager... ( Bob Dylan). Single mindedly, Bob Dylan coached himself to learn how to
play multiple instruments such as the guitar, harmonica, and piano, which helped lead to a plentiful
amount of awards and achievements. Chronologically, Bob Dylan was announced in the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, was granted a Grammy for lifetime achievements in 1991 and... Show

The usage of similes and alliteration in the lyrics Like a Rolling Stone, helps reflect the poetry in his
work. The first and most vivid poetic device used throughout one of Bob Dylan s top ten hits
Like a Rolling Stone are similes. The best example of a simile in his lyrics appears in line
sixteen through eighteen. With no direction home / A complete unknown / Just like a rolling
stone? (Dylan 16 18). With Bob Dylan stating this negative comparison of a hopeless woman to
a stone rolling down a hill, going out of control, supports his listeners with the thought of a
lonely woman with no direction home. So this phrase, a rolling stone, that meant a lack of
material possessions, a lack of home, a lack of belonging for those who first sang it, became a
symbol of liberation for the rock generation (Bowie). These material ties weakened our vision
and the ability to be able to see around us. Singing this phrase and ending it with a question
allowed Bob Dylan to create the sense of freedom and the achievement of clearing his listeners
visions to help them see through the illusions around them. The other poetic device that
contributed to the admirable background of the lyrics in Like a Rolling Stone is the usage of
alliteration. The first example of the occurrence with the same sound and letters is in lines one
to three, Once upon a time you dressed so fine / You threw the bums a dime in your prime,
/ Didn t you? (Dylan 1 3). With the repetition of ime and ine it presents us with a childlike feel
towards the song. In addition to the childish feeling, it seems as if the woman approaches life in a
much more simplistic way. The short line length, the fairy tale opening, the simple words and
images, the straightforward aaaa repeating rhyme all these elements work together to create the
feeling of a children s song, of a child s world (Bowie). The woman described in Bob Dylan s lyrics
assumes that

My Philosophy Statement Essay
My Philosophy Statement
In this philosophy statement you will not be reading the statement of a great philosophical mind,
but of an education student who loves to work with kids and who tries to have the students best
interest in mind. comparing and contrasting my views with the views of many of the philosophical
giants throughout history I will discuss five topics: 1.) the nature of students, 2.) the nature of
knowledge, 3.) the purpose of public education, 4.) the method of education, 5.) and the curriculum
that should be used in public schools.
Taking off on the topic of the nature of human beings we need to look back at our own childhood
and try to remember our actions, if not our thoughts. Pragmatist/Progressivists ... Show more

I also agree with the pragmatist/progressivists about the area of evolving knowledge. Throughout
our lives, and especially in our younger years, we develop different changes and experiences. For
instance, after sent to stand in the corner for the tenth time Billy finally realized that the action of
talking back to his mother had consequences.
My third topic, the purpose of education, has several areas in it that I am going to discuss, the first
being the general importance of education. Spring outlined many goals for education. The
prevention of teenage pregnancies, prevention of drug abuse, and the prevention of the spread of
sexually transmitted diseases were among the many goals. To achieve these goals I agree with the
pragmatist/progressivists that believe that we need to teach kids how to think and not what to
think. By teaching kids how to think we will allow them to see the consequences of their actions
and let them make the decision of whether they can handle the consequences or not. Today kids are
taught what to think and not how to think so they rebel to get out from under the control of their
authorities not seeing the consequences. For this reason education is very important, because it
allows students the opportunity to make educated and well founded judgments and decisions that
they may not have been able to make otherwise.
Continuing on with my third topic, I hope to accomplish several goals as a

The Ultimately Successful The Houthi Movement
Ultimately successful the Houthi movement was able to get a greater role in the Yemeni
government, and even more local autonomy. This agreement helped stave of a full fledged civil
war, but at the same time it reduced the governments ability to conduct any real political or
economic reforms. Despite this new agreement President Hadi was ever more determined to
ensure no one faction gained too much power within the new federal system. Thus he put forth
his chief of staff, Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak, as candidate for Prime Minister in an attempt to
help establish his system. The Houthi leadership ultimately did not approve of the appointment,
due to Mubarak s close relationships with President Hadi, so in January of this year Mubarak was
abducted at gunpoint. With President Hadi choice no longer an option, the Houthi Leadership
wanted one of there own to be come the Prime Minister. Later that month, after the Houthis
rejected a power sharing deal a few months prior, and many events causing undue pressure on
President Hadi and his cabinet, decided to resign their offices. In a manor of day the Houthi rebels
stormed and took over the presidential palace and forced Hadi and his Prime Minister, Khaled
Bahah, to officially send resignation letter to the parliament, which promptly declined their
resignations; but nonetheless the Houthi rebels forced them out of office and dissolved the cabinet.
The Houthi rebels put both Hadi and Bahah under strict house arrest. Hadi later escaped to

Compare And Contrast The Aprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz
The relationship between a parent and their child is a very important relationship in anyone s life.
An example of children being affected by their relationships with their parents is evident in the
following pieces of work. Death of a Salesman and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz both
share similarities between the father and son relationships shown within the novels. The two books
both share the idea of having false ideals within the relationship between a father and son, the
father does not treat women with any respect, therefore the son follows in his footsteps, and the
relationships simply lack a bond between father and son. Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and

There s no spite in it any more. I m just what I am, that s all. (Act 2) In The Apprenticeship of
Duddy Kravitz, Max is a pimp and he focuses his attention more on Lennie than Duddy. This is
evident when Duddy went off to work in the Laurentian Mountains and Max never took the time
to reach out and write to him whereas Max was able to write to Lennie every week, who was
working as a camp counsellor. The relationship between Duddy and his father is distant and his
father never tells Duddy that he is proud of him. This is small, but it removes any sort of positive
reinforcement for Duddy. Duddy would not feel accomplished whenever he would do something
great and just be constantly brought down because he feels like he does not make his father
proud. The father son relationships between Willy and Biff, and Max and Duddy both have a lack
of a bond between the individuals which evidently affects the son in a negative

A Proposal For A Legalization Of Abortion
Executive Summary The purpose of this policy paper is to address the egregious violation of rights
that Ireland has submitted it s citizens to by outlawing abortion procedures. This proposal calls
primarily for a decriminalization of abortion and for the government to examine the religiosity of
both Ireland s political administration and the cultural view of abortion. The 2013 Protection of Life
During Pregnancy Act fails to protect the maternal health of woman and is failing due to the
vagueness in language and inconsistency in implementation. That being said, the source of the
problem lies in the Eight Amendment of the Bunreacht na hÉireann, the Irish Constitution, that
defends that a fetus is an effective Irish citizen at the time of... Show more content on

Women can experience serious, life threatening, and sometimes fatal complications during a
pregnancy. The United Nations affirms that denying access to abortion legally qualifies as torture
as a dangerous pregnancy constitutes as an act by of severe pain or suffering, whether physical or
mental (Convention Against Torture). Protection against this type of reproductive right violation is
guaranteed by the The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against
Women, specifically Article 16.1; The Right to Decide the Number and Spacing of Children
(CEDAW). In December of 1985 Ireland acceded the Convention. Although Ireland did not ratify
CEDAW and the document is not legally binding, adhering to these human rights norms is an
expectation that is on place on all the UN Member States. By criminalizing abortion Ireland violates
these basic human rights and infringes on a women s right to reproductive freedom
2. Origin/History of the Problem and Current Context
The Republic of Ireland has been view in
the international community as a morally conservative country (Bloomer 368). Contraception only
became available in 1973 and divorce was prohibited until 1997. In 1983 the Eight Amendment to
the Irish Constitution (Article 40.3.3) equated the life of an unborn child to that of it s mothers and
thus abortion was prohibited. Recently in 2013, the Irish government sought to try and appease
critiques of their strict abortion ban when the government passed

SETTING
The date of my observation was April 27th, 2010. It was about 9:30 in the morning when I began
my study. I went to Grossmont College s Child Development Center. The first thing I began
looking for was if the child teacher ratio was correct. The child ratio was 2 teachers to about
every 8 children. The ratio was good. As I entered there was one large room that almost looked
as if it could be two rooms they way it was set up. One half consisted of a large bookshelf with
numerous books on it with a couch in the front of it. The other half of the room was almost like a
little kitchen. It had a table with chairs around it with a sink and cabinets behind it. There were

Case Study Week Two: Comments of the German Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference 1919
1. According to the authors of Germany s complaint. The various provisions of the treaty hurt
Germany s economy by forcing Germany to accept full responsibility for the damages caused not
only by the Germans but also by everyone associated with them and the damage that was caused.
As stated in the article, Comments of the German Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, 1919

last analysis the whole European system is in a deeper sense responsible for the war, with its

Instead they were pretty much treated as if everything was their fault and they had sole
responsibility for the war and they were going to pay the price. 3. The fundamental Laws the
document appeal to in order to strengthen German assertions was the right to self determination.
They felt that by being deprived of that right, the feelings and wishes of all the people were
being taken away and not being considered. They were forced to abide by other nations wishes
without any input as to what they wished for themselves. 4. Personally I do agree that Germany
was being mistreated. In my opinion, they were being unfairly treated because what applied to
one nation did not apply to them. They were pretty much treated like they were the sole reason
why the war started and they were being punished for the actions and choices of many nations. It
was as if in order to live in peace they had to give up the very land and rights everyone was fighting
for, especially the basic rights of the nations of self determination. It is unreasonable and not right
to force Germany to give up all power of their land, by having another nation determine everything
for them, for Germany to have to rebuild their country and not benefit from it, rather the only
benefit to rebuilding would be to other nations. I think defenders of the treaty would respond to
Germany s complaints by

Polygraph Use ii
Abstract Polygraph is widely rejected as pseudoscience by the scientific community. Prior to 1998
state and county courts allowed or could allow polygraph evidence to be admissible evidence to
convict or prove guilt. Polygraphs should not be used in Court Rooms, the accuracy of the test

Rule 707 was the evidentiary rule focused on in the case. Rule 707 serves the legitimate interest
of ensuring that only reliable evidence is introduced. Here the decision turned on the issue of
whether the defendant is impaired by not being able to use the results from the polygraph to prove
his innocence and to lay the foundation for the reliability on the results. In this case, Rule 707 did
not implicate a sufficiently weighty interest of the accused to raise a constitutional concern under
this Court s precedents. The three cases principally relied upon by the Court of Appeals, Rock v.
Arkansas, 483 U.S. 44, 55, Washington v. Texas, 388 U.S. 14, 23, and Chambers v. Mississippi,
410 U.S. 284, 302 303, which did not support a right to introduce polygraph evidence, even in very
narrow circumstances. The exclusions of evidence there declared unconstitutional significantly
undermined fundamental elements of the accuser s defense. That was not the circumstances in US
v. Scheffer, where the court members heard all the relevant details of the charged offense from
respondent s perspective, and Rule 707 did not preclude him from introducing any factual evidence,
but merely barred him from introducing expert opinion testimony to bolster his own credibility.

the Sutter s multiparty contract, integrated form of agreement (IFOA) to design the 860,000 sf, 14

they used Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) as a company. In addition to this, Schedule
predictability was also a vital reason for using IPD to encounter the various critical variables of
the project. The client also wanted to implement and execute BIM so as to achieve the designated
goals. As per the requirement following are the list of owner s design goals:
Excellence in clinical care
Education
Community Service
Patient satisfaction
Family involvement with the patient

With the progress of the project, the owner (Client) came up with various additional items they
desired to add, mainly referred to as the value added items and stalked them on separate budget line
because they were not intended in the original program or estimated maximum cost. As the team
reduced costs through innovation, coordination and teamwork, they were able to incorporate some

Western Genre Analysis
Coming into Writing 39B I did not know what to expect of the western genre, but I became eager
to learn more about the genre as I was exposed to the films. During the second lecture, I felt as
though I knew very little about the concept so I became too shy to discuss the character traits.
That later changed when a peer of mine described a cowboy s physical and metaphorical traits.
That provoked a flashbulb memory to occur from when I was a child. I remembered always
walking into my mother s room and seeing her watching old western style, black and white
movies that were very comical to me but to her they were very interesting. I would always ask her
why she watched such boring, terribly directed movies and she would simply respond, This is

The Importance Of Personal Liberty
Personal liberty means a bundle of rights, essential for the existence of human life. In Maneka
Gandhi v. Union of India, the Supreme Court pointed out that the expression personal liberty does
not mean only liberty of the persons but also liberty or rights attached to the person (Jus personam).
A division bench of the DelhiHigh Court observed in AV Chardel v. Delhi University that the
expression life and personal liberty includes a variety of rights, which though not enumerated in
Part III of the Constitution, can be included in various aspects of liberty provided they are
necessary for the full development of human personality. Further in Francis Coralie v. Union
Territory of Delhi, Justices PN Bhagwati, Fazal Ali, Murtaza, while stressing the quality of life and
its enjoyment within the purview of Article 21 have rightly said: the right to life enshrined in
Article 21 cannot be restricted to mere animal existence. It means something much more than just
physical survival. The right to life includes the right to live with human dignity and all that goes
along with it.
Along these lines the articulation individual freedom isn t restricted to the assurance of appendage
and workforce however incorporates everything basic for the happiness regarding existence with all
human respect.

Over the last decade we have seen the emergence of a new breed of organisations that are
disrupting every market, regardless of the industry or geographical location. They are driven by
technology and globalisation. The world has witnessed the rise of new tech companies such as
Uber, Airbnb and Facebook that provide software, which act as an interface between customers and
businesses. Most of these organisations do not own any assets or resources, but are relying on
contractors around the world to perform their services, which has significantly reduced the costs of
running a business. These companies have experienced exponential growth and have expanded into
different regions around the globe. Ever changing global markets and digital disruption have forced
companies to innovate rapidly, adapt their product and services, and stay connected to local
customers.
The issue new tech companies are facing is to create an organisational structure that promotes
innovation, while being adaptable enough to facilitate their whirlwind growth into the global
competitive market. The aim of this report is to find a suitable organisational structure that relates
to the potential management problem of these companies. The report will examine and discuss two

The importance of education is highly emphasized in American culture today. According to most
members of society, the more educated a person is, the better off they will be in the long run. The
idea that the furthering of one s education is important and is something everyone should partake
in even as adults can be considered an ideology, which is a system of beliefs or theories held by an

Because of this educational growth mindset, plenty of American parents enroll their children in

Why Is It Important To Have Salary Caps In Professional...
Money is limited. One can only buy what one has enough for. People must be efficient with their
money. One must fill all of their needs. Similar to this situation, owners of professional sports
teams can only buy players they have enough money for. Salary caps are placed on players based
on skill level and value. This could be based off of various influences such as location, fan base,
concessions sold, and much more. When some teams get more money than others, those teams get
stacked with great players that lead the teams to victory. However, some complain that they don t
have a lot of money, and state that that is the reason they don t have a good team. Therefore, the
issue of salary caps, has two sides. Although salary caps could be abused... Show more content on

Athletes in professional sports get paid a lot of money to play for famous teams. Because they
want more money, they are motivated to play better. When they do play better, they get more
money. For example, rookies, players that are new to the game, aren t paid much. However, they
want more money to support their life, so they practice more and train to be much more skilled.
Coaches then realize they will soon want more money as the years go by. Athletes practice with
their team every week, and do the drills that the coaches pick to do. If players don t get better
from this, they need to practice on their own time. It s up to the execution from the athletes
(Neiburg). This shows that athletes must be self motivated. Most of them are, when they aren t
paid much. Most veteran athletes that are already skilled have a high payroll because of salary
caps. Since it is usually cap prohibitive to release a player that gets a significant signing bonus
with this model, some teams are willing to include roster bonuses due in the first couple of days
of the second contract year (Corry). This illustrates that salary caps don t allow players to be
released right away. So, the player will get more practice with the team, and have more chances
after a bad season or two. Even if a player eventually does get released, they wouldn t be happy,
but they d be self motivated to practice as much as they can to get back on a team. Critics of this
idea say that the only way players got into a professional sports league is because they are
skilled, and already practiced a lot. Teams are also only looking for skilled players in certain
positions they need. However, the reason teams need new players in those positions is because the
players that are already in those positions have weaknesses. Since there isn t any signing bonus
proration, teams have more cap

The Horrors of Cannibalism
Cannibalism to say the least is a very taboo word. Cannibalism is known to be very disturbing and
sets off a certain set of powerful emotions when spoken about. One thing about cannibalism is that
it used to be considered a normal part of life, and has only recently been seen as taboo in the recent
centuries. Many people believe Cannibalismshould be legal world wide, but only have reasoning s
of culture and religions. Cannibalism should be illegal because of immorality, diseases , and
murder by eating someone s flesh. The History of Cannibalism is small, yet widely spread
around the world. The Korowai Tribe has been around since 1974, they are known for killing
outsiders, and to be afraid of pale skinned people (Raffaele). If Cannibalism stays legal, the
isolated tribes could possibly expand, and want to kill any pale skinned person, or anyone not
from their tribe. The Carib tribe was the first known tribe to commit acts of cannibalism to their
enemies, which became increasingly rare once the introduction of Christianity was introduced in
the area (Mind Q). Once the human race became more active in moral behavior, Cannibalism was
outcast, giving it no reason to be legal within our current society. The Aztecs are known as one of
the most brutal tribes to date, the Aztecs would commit thousands of human sacrifices a year (Mind
Q). When you have Cannibals eating live hearts (Mind Q), and making human bodies into multiple

inheritance would have less drive to exert the time or effort to keep the elderly person in good
health thus resulting in a faster pay out of the inheritance. I found this to be quite interesting
because I, before reading this, was in the same boat as most others by thinking that the
inheritance tax should not be very high. However, after reading this, I would consider a minor
increase in the inheritance tax to be justified because I think that the lives of the elderly,
especially family members, should be more important than the inheritance that they leave behind.
I wouldn t go too far though to raise the tax so high because I think that there is a ceiling where
there would just be no benefit in even having an inheritance at all. I think that now, after reading
this, I will think more closely when the time comes for any of my close family to reach that stage
of life where inheritance is even a discussion point, because I will want to make sure that the
inheritance is not getting in the way of the well being of the family

Hiring Independent Contractors
Engaging independent contractors can be beneficial to employers in various aspects especially to
small business owners. Although hiring independent contractors require higher pay, employers
are more likely to save money by doing so. Because when businesses hire them, they may not be
eligible for benefits such as health insurance or paid for taking time off work, they are not
provided coverage by the worker s compensation insurance, and they will be responsible for
submitting their own income taxes. In addition, it also lowers the administrative costs because
payroll taxes, CPP and EI do not have to be withheld or remitted. Whereas, when employers hire an
employee, there are various expenses that come along, including the cost of employer contributed...

Hiring independent contractors would lead to losing some control over your workers since
employers cannot control how they perform their task because you can t closely monitor their
work, unlike employees. You can guide them to how you want a particular job to be done, but
usually they will run their business their way. Since they enjoy autonomy to decide how to do the
job at their best for which they have been hired. (Forbes, 2006) Independent contractors are hired
as a short term worker, which means that they might not be working with the same company for
another project the next time. Since, they usually operate on a first come, first serve basis, which
can become inconvenient and disruptive for employers if they want to work with the same
contractor for all of their projects. In addition, different contractors may perform their job in a
different manner, which can lead to various results from each contractor. Therefore, hiring
employees would be a better option for such employers. Another disadvantage is that because they
are freelancers and work with various employers, they would only focus on promoting their brands
but not the employers. Furthermore, when an employee is injured at the workplace, employers use
the worker s compensation insurance program to compensate for the injuries so that employees do
not sue them for the damages. However,

The Role Of Food In The Civil War
Food obviously played a significant role in the Civil War. Without the basic necessities of food
and water, men would have no energy to fight; simply put: no food, no army. Unfortunately for the
soldiers, the only way to make sure that they actually could be fed meant that they would have
usually the same monotonous meals. And even by these standards, some men were still left unfed.
The Confederacy and the Union both struggled with the upkeep of trying to keep their men fed,
yet they had different tactics towards trying to fill the stomachs of their soldiers, Because the
rations had to be transported long distances, the Commissary Departments relied on foods that
could be preserved, so the primary ingredients available to soldiers were salted... Show more

Hammaker Manufacturing (HMC) has had its AIS in place for the past 15 years, and is interested
in reevaluating its business processes to identify any potential areas for improvement. The current
system has worked well for the company so far, however with the increasing pace of modern

When the moment comes when you realize that your teenage son or daughter is missing and
you believe he or she has run away from home, it can be intense. You may panic and experience a
variety of thoughts and emotions about your child s safety and wonder what you should do next.
There are concrete steps you can take to find your child s whereabouts. The following are among
the most important. Contact those who know your child Obviously this includes friends of your
child, but you also want to speak to parents of your child s friends as well. If your teenager has a
job, you should contact them and also the school they attend. The idea is to determine who was the

is common for teens to runaway for a short time, but plan to return quickly. There may be items
that they left behind that have great meaning to them, and this may indicate that their running
away was a decision done on impulse, so they may not be gone for too long. Contact the police
All of the information you have gathered from your child s friends, their job and school can be
given to the police. You will also need to provide a recent photograph of your teenager to the
police, so have this ready. Even if you think your child will be back in the next day or two, if
your teenager is a minor, you must contact the police. You could be wrong, and their assistance
can be invaluable in getting your teenage back. Use the services of a private investigator The
police have a heavy case load when it comes to runaway teenagers, so the time they put into
finding your teenage son or daughter is going to be limited. The best course of action is to call a
private investigator, and the sooner you do this, the better the chances are that your teenager
will be found. The trail will still be warm. Unlike the police, we are not involved in finding
criminals. We are focused on a more narrow range of services, and locating people is one of them.

commented on what he thought of the whole situation. Arnold stated, The Japanese position was
hopeless even before the first atomic bomb fell because the Japanese had lost control of their

the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse (Freeman 1). Although, it can be arguable
that Japan was strong and would not go down without a fight and it was just out of the question
for them to show that they will surrender and that the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb in fact to as

This particular movie poster will appear interesting to not only racecar fanatics but also
adventurous spirited people, because of the desert like scenery in the back, because clearly a
racecar does not belong in that type of landscape. It also appears appealing to the ones who

Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window Essay
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a voyeuristic point of view (POV) style of filming. The point
of view captures the intimate details of the neighbors lives through the view of Jimmy Stewarts
character L. B. Jefferies (Jeff). Hitchcock set the tone for movies of the POV style. There are
many films today that have used the same POV techniques, such as 2007 s Disturbia, directed by
D.J. Caruso, who was inspired by Rear Window. Although the setting are different, Disturbia
gives the audience the view from the aspect of a teenager, Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf), who
under house arrest starts spying on his neighbors. When one night he watches his neighbor
dispose of what he thinks is body (Cooper, 2012). These two movies while similar, differ as well.
Rear Window, I felt for its time was somewhat risquГ© for its time period. The suggestion of

World Myhtology The Golden Guide Analysis
To me, this passage just emphasizes the point that we all have distinctive outlooks on things.
There is a Spanish proverb that my mom used to say to me that reminds me of that Cada Cabeza

The Leadership And Management Workflow
In every organization, the leadership and management workflow comprises the vast majority of
decision making and will be the defining factor in workplace cultures, communication, and overall
sustaining business practices. In non profit organizations, this statement holds true. For example,
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest youth mentoring organization in America. Their vision
is to provide all children, especially those facing adversity, with achievable success in their lifetime.
The executive team that makes up the governing board for this organization has their own leadership
practices that will lead towards the organization having different strengths and weaknesses in
theory and in the workplace. The Contingency Leadership Theory will be discussed in context of
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as in general practice.

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters America and has been

Richard Van Camp s The Night Charles Bukowski Died
When defining the term manhood , many people may use terms such as courage, strength, or
bravery. Throughout history there have been many pressures on men to be as stereotypically
manly as possible. If men don t conform to those stereotypes, they may be looked down upon by
society as a whole. Richard Van Camp s short story The Night Charles BukowskiDied is a prime
example of the dangers of nonconformity to stereotypically manly traits. The story is an intense
first person stream of consciousness from the point of view of an unnamed narrator that follows
the narrator and three of his peers: Mikey, Jason, and Scott. The use of metaphor, point of view,
and setting in The Night Charles Bukowski Died exposes how stereotypical expectations of
manhood can lead to dangerous situations not only physically, but also socially and emotionally.
Van Camp makes use of metaphor to compare three distinct situations in the story relating to
manhood to animals. When Jason and the narrator are encouraging Mikey to be strong, the
narrator tells a brief story of an elder who was courageous enough to stand between a grizzly bear
and his grandson with just an ax and an attitude of surrender being completely out of the question
(33). In this situation, the narrator is doing his best to instill a fighting attitude in Mikey instead of
just letting him accept that Scott is bullying him. Later in the story as the narrator, Jason, and
Mikey are about to beat up Scott, the narrator recalls a lion

The Pros And Cons Of Harry Harlow
Harry Harlow, American psychologist, surrounded in controversy, drove psychologists bananas.
He questioned whether children established relationships with their maternal figures because food,
or if children established relationships based off of other factors. To test this theory, Harlow bred
and studied the rhesus monkeys to determine what is the basis of a bond. Separating the children
from their mother, Harlow introduced surrogate parents, the wire mother and the cloth mother. The
wire mother was wooden and metal contraption with a bottle for food, while the cloth mother was
swaddled in the same fabric that lined the children s cages. The results were overwhelming, with
the monkeys preferring the cloth mother for the majority of the time. The monkeys would often
only resort to the wire mother, when necessary and preferred the cloth mother in times of duress,
confusion, and even for a sense of security. He concluded that children, regardless of species,
formed bonds with their maternal figures because they give the child a sense of security/comfort,
contrasting the behaviorist theory that children only established bonds due to their caretakers
being their only food source. However, Harlow did not stop here, he continued his research and
tested the effects of complete isolation. His new study, the pit of despair , kept monkeys in
isolation for at least a year, and then would reintroduce them to other children. The effects of
isolation resulted in aggressive behavior,

The reality and illusion of the beach A perfect day for Bananafish by J.D. Salinger and A Protest

Matisse s Le Bonheur De Vivre
As instrumental as Matisse and Picasso were to the development and evolution of modern art,
they were inspired by CГ©zanne. In this essay, I will describe how Paul CГ©zanne s The Large
Bathers (1906) inspired Matisse and Picasso but also how they evolved.
It is evident that while still embracing the abstract style emerging in the turn of the century,
CГ©zanne still chose to compose his painting in a classical way. (Harris Zucker, n.d.) There is
still a believable perspective in the painting, even if the forms of the women are abstract but
familiar. Henri Matisse s Le Bonheur de Vivre (1906) strays away from the classical style by
creating a perspective that is unreal. The couple in the bottom right corner are significantly larger
than the woman next to them, but also nearly equal in size to the women in the middle of the
painting. The composition is very skewed because of the liberations he took in regards to
perspective. There is also a more playful feel to Matisse s painting than CГ©zanne s. Not only are
the figures carefree, but so are the contrasting colors and brushstrokes. This is very different from

women, their representation isn t vulgar. This is not the case for Picasso s painting. Picasso

Descriptive Essay About A Birthday
Daddy s home! I yelled from the couch in front of the window where I was waiting for him.
I unlocked the front door and ran as fast as I could towards him, embracing him in a hug, Daddy!
He knelt down so that his eyes were level with mine and said with a mischievous smile, I have a
surprise for you in the car.
What is it? what is it? I pleaded.
It s a birthday present, but we have to wait for mommy, cause I know she ll want to be there when
you open it.
Okay, I replied slightly disappointed.
Let s go inside, it s going to get dark soon.
Okay, daddy.
He stood up and opened the passenger side door and got a huge box, wrapped in pink wrapping
paper off the seat and took it inside, while I marveled at size of the box and pondering what it
could be.
I stepped inside and closed the door, Mommy! Daddy got me a present! Did you see it?
Yeah, I did! I wonder what it could be, she added with that loving smile that only she could give.
I sat down on the couch, in front of the pile of presents on the coffee table, with the bigger
presents on the floor. In the kitchen I could see a cake with many frosted and colorful flowers on it
and a big number seven candle in the middle.
Can we do presents now? I asked with excitement.
Of course. After all it is your birthday. Said daddy.
I took the smallest one and ripped the wrapping paper off. I smiled widely as I looked down at the
brown haired Barbie doll and looked at my mom and dad, Thank you!

they approach her. In the episode Puppy, a man is shown flirting with Morgan, and she is shown

she hides her true feelings. Instead, Morgan tells the man that she feels comfortable around him as
well. Later on in the scene, Morgan comes up with an excuse to leave the room when the ... Show

Religion In The Book Of Ephesians
Each verse in this passage is in the contexts of what a relationship between a husband and wife
should be. Paul writes as if he is speaking directly to husbands and their wives. Wives, submit to
your husbands as to the Lord, because the husband is the head of the wife as also Christ is the
head of the church he himself being the savior of the body. Husbands, love your wives just as
Christ loved the church and gave himself for her to sanctify her by cleansing her with the
washing of the water by the word, so that he may present the church to himself as glorious not
having a stain or wrinkle, or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. The passage itself is in the
context of how the body of Christ is supposed to live. Paul addresses the believer life here on this
earth from chapter four... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the context of the book as a whole, Paul is trying to encourage the believer in Ephesus by
showing how Christ is bringing a people together for himself that is made up of Jews and
Gentiles. This is to show his ultimate glory and triumph. The book of Ephesians itself is broken
down into nine sections. The first section Paul starts off with praising God. Blessed is the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph. 1:3) Paul praises God for two things, spiritual
blessings and the redemption in Christ. (Eph. 1:3 14) Next Paul takes time to give thanks and
prays for the Ephesian believers in his letter. He prays for they that might have wisdom and
revelation so that they can be encouraged about what God is doing. This of course sets the stage
for the rest of his letter. In the third section, Paul talks about reconciliation to God through Jesus.
(2:1 10) He mentions that this is achieved by grace

Queen Elizabeth Essay
Queen Elizabeth was born on September 7, in 1533 to a royal couple by the name of Henry VIII
and Anne Boleyn. She pertained a strong personality and strong political skills in overlooking
marriage proposals and intensely flirting with many available suitors. She reigned over England
without a king or children (Britannia: Elizabeth 1). Her father was known for the execution of his
wives. The king had announced that any daughter would be illegitimate to the line of succession
because his upcoming sons would be highly favorable to the throne (Thomas, Heather). Anne
Boleynwas killed by the king for not providing him with a son, but a daughter who would live to
be a legend of English times (Thomas, Heather).

Whether this was true or not, Elizabeth was arrested and put in prison. She was moved around to
different prisons for a little over a year. However, when Queen Mary I started to become ill, her
husband, Philip of Spain, called Elizabeth out of prison to develop a friendship with her, since she
would take the throne when Queen Mary I would die (Putatunda, Rita).
According to Green, this coronation to the throne took place on January 15, 1559. The new
queen started to take advantage of all the new opportunities. She started horseback riding more.
She also took up hunting and hawking and enjoyed watching jousts and theatre (Green, Robert
53). Elizabeth was also strong in her Catholic beliefs. Heather Thomas writes that she
reestablished a Protestant Church and became the Supreme Governor of the Church of England,
which was to please those attending (Thomas, Heather). Britannica states that she was a
Conservative Protestant. She liked traditional style of worship and did not believe in executing
people for their religious beliefs (Britannia Encyclopedia Elizabeth I). Marriage proposals
became a daily routine. Regard her beliefs for the matrimony; she used the proposals to frighten
enemies or to even draw them in. However, she came close to marriage twice in her reign
(Putatunda, Rita). One of which was a near proposal with Robert

Why Did The Diprotodon Become Extinct
Introduction
Megafauna simply means big animals and is a term mostly used to describe a particular group of
large land animals which evolved millions of years after the dinosaurs became extinct. These
animals generally have a body mass which is greater than 40 kilograms.
Diptrotodon
The Diprotodon was the largest and the best known of the megafauna.
The Diprotodon co existed with humans for thousands of years before becoming extinct some
25,000 years ago. It was also the last megafauna to become extinct.
They were widely spread throughout Australia, including the Darling Downs in Queensland,
Wellington Caves in New South Wales. Naracoorte Caves in South Australia and Bacchus Marsh in
Victoria, just to name a few.
It is unlikely that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Appearance
The Procoptodon was a huge kangaroo which grew up to 2 metres in height and weighed up to 200
kilograms.
The Procoptodon had a short, flat face and forward facing eyes and an upright posture.
The lower jaw was big and a chin was developed. It had small incisors on the upper and lower jaws
for nipping the vegetation.
It had long and mobile forelimbs with the two middle fingers having long, recurved claws enabling
them to be used like a hook to grasp leafy branches.
It had a single toe on its feet which had a hoof like claw on the end of it. This may have helped
give the Procoptodon a greater measure of speed. It is believed that the number 2, 3 and 5 toe
bones were so reduced that they were lost and the well developed number 4 toe formed into a
single toe.
Habitat
Procoptodon were mainly in arid or semi arid regions on New South Wales and South Australia.
Many areas were harsh environments being treeless, wind blown sand dunes. Having been found
in The Lake Menindee area in western New South Wales, it was a somewhat cooler and wetter
climate than what it is today. The surrounding areas had forests, woodland, savannah and plains
with windblown sand dunes on the edges of the lake. Procoptodon have been found in caves in the
Nullarbor Plain in a dry open environment with hard leaved

Sexual Selection and Sexual Conflict Essay
Charles Darwin characterized sexual selection as variance in the number of mates . The purpose of
sexual selection is to perfect the secondary sexual characteristics, which are the morphological
differences between the two sexes. On the other hand the primary sexual characteristics are the
differences between the reproductive genital systems of the two sexes. Sexual selectioninstead of
adapting the individual to the environment, like natural selection, it does enhance traits involved in
mate acquisition. Sexual conflict, on the other hand, occurs when males and females have different
reproductive interests and deriving from the urge of sexual reproduction. This is boosted by
promiscuity when males and females have several partners.... Show more content on

In 1990 Barette and Vandal studied sparring in caribou. From the 713 matches between males of
different antler sizes, 90% of the time males with the smaller antlers retreated. Also there is the
intersexual selection, which is also known as the female choice. There are three cases of
intersexual selection. Firstly, the female choice co evolved with trait exaggeration, otherwise
called Fisher s process. Secondly, the choosy females gain direct benefit and thirdly, females are
choosy because of sensory bias. Fisher s process is divided in two phases. At phase one, the
female preferences evolve because the trait that they prefer is favored by natural selection and
as a result, their offspring are more likely to have the beneficial trait. When there is a distinct
difference in a species, which is linked with the selective advantage, the females tend to choose
the males that clearly distinguish the difference that is to be observed and they will prefer the
most advantageous type. As for phase two, once the female preferences exist, males with the
specific trait are more fit, which is both a natural and a sexual selection advantage. As a result
there will be an increasing selective force favoring stronger preferences and more extreme traits.
The runaway process will eventually stop, when there is no longer genetic variation for further trait
or preference exaggeration or when the viability costs of the trait, balance sexual

  • 2. Bob Dylan Similes Among the American folk music, the name Bob Dylan is murmured with hushed respect ( Getting To Dylan 1986 documentary ). Bob Dylan, originally named Robert Allen Zimmerman was born on May 24, 1941. At the age of eighteen, Bob Dylan attended the University of Minnesota, where he sought interest in music. Influenced by the blues, country, and rock and roll, he began playing music as a teenager... ( Bob Dylan). Single mindedly, Bob Dylan coached himself to learn how to play multiple instruments such as the guitar, harmonica, and piano, which helped lead to a plentiful amount of awards and achievements. Chronologically, Bob Dylan was announced in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, was granted a Grammy for lifetime achievements in 1991 and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The usage of similes and alliteration in the lyrics Like a Rolling Stone, helps reflect the poetry in his work. The first and most vivid poetic device used throughout one of Bob Dylan s top ten hits Like a Rolling Stone are similes. The best example of a simile in his lyrics appears in line sixteen through eighteen. With no direction home / A complete unknown / Just like a rolling stone? (Dylan 16 18). With Bob Dylan stating this negative comparison of a hopeless woman to a stone rolling down a hill, going out of control, supports his listeners with the thought of a lonely woman with no direction home. So this phrase, a rolling stone, that meant a lack of material possessions, a lack of home, a lack of belonging for those who first sang it, became a symbol of liberation for the rock generation (Bowie). These material ties weakened our vision and the ability to be able to see around us. Singing this phrase and ending it with a question allowed Bob Dylan to create the sense of freedom and the achievement of clearing his listeners visions to help them see through the illusions around them. The other poetic device that contributed to the admirable background of the lyrics in Like a Rolling Stone is the usage of alliteration. The first example of the occurrence with the same sound and letters is in lines one to three, Once upon a time you dressed so fine / You threw the bums a dime in your prime, / Didn t you? (Dylan 1 3). With the repetition of ime and ine it presents us with a childlike feel towards the song. In addition to the childish feeling, it seems as if the woman approaches life in a much more simplistic way. The short line length, the fairy tale opening, the simple words and images, the straightforward aaaa repeating rhyme all these elements work together to create the feeling of a children s song, of a child s world (Bowie). The woman described in Bob Dylan s lyrics assumes that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My Philosophy Statement Essay My Philosophy Statement In this philosophy statement you will not be reading the statement of a great philosophical mind, but of an education student who loves to work with kids and who tries to have the students best interest in mind. comparing and contrasting my views with the views of many of the philosophical giants throughout history I will discuss five topics: 1.) the nature of students, 2.) the nature of knowledge, 3.) the purpose of public education, 4.) the method of education, 5.) and the curriculum that should be used in public schools. Taking off on the topic of the nature of human beings we need to look back at our own childhood and try to remember our actions, if not our thoughts. Pragmatist/Progressivists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I also agree with the pragmatist/progressivists about the area of evolving knowledge. Throughout our lives, and especially in our younger years, we develop different changes and experiences. For instance, after sent to stand in the corner for the tenth time Billy finally realized that the action of talking back to his mother had consequences. My third topic, the purpose of education, has several areas in it that I am going to discuss, the first being the general importance of education. Spring outlined many goals for education. The prevention of teenage pregnancies, prevention of drug abuse, and the prevention of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases were among the many goals. To achieve these goals I agree with the pragmatist/progressivists that believe that we need to teach kids how to think and not what to think. By teaching kids how to think we will allow them to see the consequences of their actions and let them make the decision of whether they can handle the consequences or not. Today kids are taught what to think and not how to think so they rebel to get out from under the control of their authorities not seeing the consequences. For this reason education is very important, because it allows students the opportunity to make educated and well founded judgments and decisions that they may not have been able to make otherwise. Continuing on with my third topic, I hope to accomplish several goals as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Ultimately Successful The Houthi Movement Ultimately successful the Houthi movement was able to get a greater role in the Yemeni government, and even more local autonomy. This agreement helped stave of a full fledged civil war, but at the same time it reduced the governments ability to conduct any real political or economic reforms. Despite this new agreement President Hadi was ever more determined to ensure no one faction gained too much power within the new federal system. Thus he put forth his chief of staff, Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak, as candidate for Prime Minister in an attempt to help establish his system. The Houthi leadership ultimately did not approve of the appointment, due to Mubarak s close relationships with President Hadi, so in January of this year Mubarak was abducted at gunpoint. With President Hadi choice no longer an option, the Houthi Leadership wanted one of there own to be come the Prime Minister. Later that month, after the Houthis rejected a power sharing deal a few months prior, and many events causing undue pressure on President Hadi and his cabinet, decided to resign their offices. In a manor of day the Houthi rebels stormed and took over the presidential palace and forced Hadi and his Prime Minister, Khaled Bahah, to officially send resignation letter to the parliament, which promptly declined their resignations; but nonetheless the Houthi rebels forced them out of office and dissolved the cabinet. • 5. Compare And Contrast The Aprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz The relationship between a parent and their child is a very important relationship in anyone s life. An example of children being affected by their relationships with their parents is evident in the following pieces of work. Death of a Salesman and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz both share similarities between the father and son relationships shown within the novels. The two books both share the idea of having false ideals within the relationship between a father and son, the father does not treat women with any respect, therefore the son follows in his footsteps, and the relationships simply lack a bond between father and son. I m just what I am, that s all. (Act 2) In The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Max is a pimp and he focuses his attention more on Lennie than Duddy. This is evident when Duddy went off to work in the Laurentian Mountains and Max never took the time to reach out and write to him whereas Max was able to write to Lennie every week, who was working as a camp counsellor. The relationship between Duddy and his father is distant and his father never tells Duddy that he is proud of him. This is small, but it removes any sort of positive reinforcement for Duddy. Duddy would not feel accomplished whenever he would do something great and just be constantly brought down because he feels like he does not make his father proud. • 7. A Proposal For A Legalization Of Abortion Executive Summary The purpose of this policy paper is to address the egregious violation of rights that Ireland has submitted it s citizens to by outlawing abortion procedures. This proposal calls primarily for a decriminalization of abortion and for the government to examine the religiosity of both Ireland s political administration and the cultural view of abortion. The 2013 Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act fails to protect the maternal health of woman and is failing due to the vagueness in language and inconsistency in implementation. That being said, the source of the problem lies in the Eight Amendment of the Bunreacht na hГ‰ireann, the Irish Constitution, that defends that a fetus is an effective Irish citizen at the time of... Protection against this type of reproductive right violation is guaranteed by the The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, specifically Article 16.1; The Right to Decide the Number and Spacing of Children (CEDAW). In December of 1985 Ireland acceded the Convention. By criminalizing abortion Ireland violates these basic human rights and infringes on a women s right to reproductive freedom 2. Origin/History of the Problem and Current Context
The Republic of Ireland has been view in the international community as a morally conservative country (Bloomer 368). Contraception only became available in 1973 and divorce was prohibited until 1997. In 1983 the Eight Amendment to the Irish Constitution (Article 40.3.3) equated the life of an unborn child to that of it s mothers and thus abortion was prohibited. The ratio was good. As I entered there was one large room that almost looked as if it could be two rooms they way it was set up. One half consisted of a large bookshelf with numerous books on it with a couch in the front of it. The other half of the room was almost like a little kitchen. According to the authors of Germany s complaint. The various provisions of the treaty hurt Germany s economy by forcing Germany to accept full responsibility for the damages caused not only by the Germans but also by everyone associated with them and the damage that was caused. As stated in the article, Comments of the German Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, 1919 President Wilson recognized in his speech of 1916 no single fact caused the war, but that in the last analysis the whole European system is in a deeper sense responsible for the war, with its combination of alliances and understandings, a complicated texture of intrigues... The fundamental Laws the document appeal to in order to strengthen German assertions was the right to self determination. They felt that by being deprived of that right, the feelings and wishes of all the people were being taken away and not being considered. They were forced to abide by other nations wishes without any input as to what they wished for themselves. 4. Personally I do agree that Germany was being mistreated. In my opinion, they were being unfairly treated because what applied to one nation did not apply to them. They were pretty much treated like they were the sole reason why the war started and they were being punished for the actions and choices of many nations. It was as if in order to live in peace they had to give up the very land and rights everyone was fighting for, especially the basic rights of the nations of self determination. It is unreasonable and not right to force Germany to give up all power of their land, by having another nation determine everything for them, for Germany to have to rebuild their country and not benefit from it, rather the only benefit to rebuilding would be to other nations. I think defenders of the treaty would respond to Germany s complaints by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rule 707 serves the legitimate interest of ensuring that only reliable evidence is introduced. Here the decision turned on the issue of whether the defendant is impaired by not being able to use the results from the polygraph to prove his innocence and to lay the foundation for the reliability on the results. In this case, Rule 707 did not implicate a sufficiently weighty interest of the accused to raise a constitutional concern under this Court s precedents. The three cases principally relied upon by the Court of Appeals, Rock v. Arkansas, 483 U.S. 44, 55, Washington v. Texas, 388 U.S. 14, 23, and Chambers v. Mississippi, 410 U.S. 284, 302 303, which did not support a right to introduce polygraph evidence, even in very narrow circumstances. The exclusions of evidence there declared unconstitutional significantly undermined fundamental elements of the accuser s defense. That was not the circumstances in US v. • 17. Why Is It Important To Have Salary Caps In Professional... Money is limited. One can only buy what one has enough for. People must be efficient with their money. One must fill all of their needs. Similar to this situation, owners of professional sports teams can only buy players they have enough money for. Salary caps are placed on players based on skill level and value. This could be based off of various influences such as location, fan base, concessions sold, and much more. When some teams get more money than others, those teams get stacked with great players that lead the teams to victory. However, some complain that they don t have a lot of money, and state that that is the reason they don t have a good team. Therefore, the issue of salary caps, has two sides. Although salary caps could be abused... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Athletes in professional sports get paid a lot of money to play for famous teams. Because they want more money, they are motivated to play better. When they do play better, they get more money. For example, rookies, players that are new to the game, aren t paid much. However, they want more money to support their life, so they practice more and train to be much more skilled. Coaches then realize they will soon want more money as the years go by. Athletes practice with their team every week, and do the drills that the coaches pick to do. If players don t get better from this, they need to practice on their own time. It s up to the execution from the athletes (Neiburg). This shows that athletes must be self motivated. Most of them are, when they aren t paid much. Most veteran athletes that are already skilled have a high payroll because of salary caps. Since it is usually cap prohibitive to release a player that gets a significant signing bonus with this model, some teams are willing to include roster bonuses due in the first couple of days of the second contract year (Corry). This illustrates that salary caps don t allow players to be released right away. So, the player will get more practice with the team, and have more chances after a bad season or two. Even if a player eventually does get released, they wouldn t be happy, but they d be self motivated to practice as much as they can to get back on a team. Critics of this idea say that the only way players got into a professional sports league is because they are skilled, and already practiced a lot. Teams are also only looking for skilled players in certain positions they need. However, the reason teams need new players in those positions is because the players that are already in those positions have weaknesses. One thing about cannibalism is that it used to be considered a normal part of life, and has only recently been seen as taboo in the recent centuries. Many people believe Cannibalismshould be legal world wide, but only have reasoning s of culture and religions. Cannibalism should be illegal because of immorality, diseases , and murder by eating someone s flesh. The History of Cannibalism is small, yet widely spread around the world. The Korowai Tribe has been around since 1974, they are known for killing outsiders, and to be afraid of pale skinned people (Raffaele). If Cannibalism stays legal, the isolated tribes could possibly expand, and want to kill any pale skinned person, or anyone not from their tribe. The Carib tribe was the first known tribe to commit acts of cannibalism to their enemies, which became increasingly rare once the introduction of Christianity was introduced in the area (Mind Q). Once the human race became more active in moral behavior, Cannibalism was outcast, giving it no reason to be legal within our current society. Dubner, is basically just a collection of stories that analyze certain aspects of our society/world, and evaluate why something is what it is or how it can be changed. All solutions/evaluations made by the authors though, are from an economist s point of view. This is one of the main reasons why I chose this book alongside the fact that some of the stories inside I found to be quite intriguing. The authors bring up this idea is chapter two when they discuss the idea surrounding a tax on the inheritance given from an elderly family member to the rest of their surviving family. While most people without an economic mindset would instantly think that lowing the inheritance tax would be a good idea, Levitt and Dubner presented a counter theory/argument. They proposed that if the inheritance tax was decreased, theoretically, those people expecting a share of the inheritance would have less drive to exert the time or effort to keep the elderly person in good health thus resulting in a faster pay out of the inheritance. I found this to be quite interesting because I, before reading this, was in the same boat as most others by thinking that the inheritance tax should not be very high. However, after reading this, I would consider a minor increase in the inheritance tax to be justified because I think that the lives of the elderly, especially family members, should be more important than the inheritance that they leave behind. I wouldn t go too far though to raise the tax so high because I think that there is a ceiling where there would just be no benefit in even having an inheritance at all. I think that now, after reading this, I will think more closely when the time comes for any of my close family to reach that stage of life where inheritance is even a discussion point, because I will want to make sure that the inheritance is not getting in the way of the well being of the family ... Throughout history there have been many pressures on men to be as stereotypically manly as possible. If men don t conform to those stereotypes, they may be looked down upon by society as a whole. Richard Van Camp s short story The Night Charles BukowskiDied is a prime example of the dangers of nonconformity to stereotypically manly traits. The story is an intense first person stream of consciousness from the point of view of an unnamed narrator that follows the narrator and three of his peers: Mikey, Jason, and Scott. The use of metaphor, point of view, and setting in The Night Charles Bukowski Died exposes how stereotypical expectations of manhood can lead to dangerous situations not only physically, but also socially and emotionally. Van Camp makes use of metaphor to compare three distinct situations in the story relating to manhood to animals. When Jason and the narrator are encouraging Mikey to be strong, the narrator tells a brief story of an elder who was courageous enough to stand between a grizzly bear and his grandson with just an ax and an attitude of surrender being completely out of the question (33). He questioned whether children established relationships with their maternal figures because food, or if children established relationships based off of other factors. To test this theory, Harlow bred and studied the rhesus monkeys to determine what is the basis of a bond. Separating the children from their mother, Harlow introduced surrogate parents, the wire mother and the cloth mother. The wire mother was wooden and metal contraption with a bottle for food, while the cloth mother was swaddled in the same fabric that lined the children s cages. The results were overwhelming, with the monkeys preferring the cloth mother for the majority of the time. The monkeys would often only resort to the wire mother, when necessary and preferred the cloth mother in times of duress, confusion, and even for a sense of security. He concluded that children, regardless of species, formed bonds with their maternal figures because they give the child a sense of security/comfort, contrasting the behaviorist theory that children only established bonds due to their caretakers being their only food source. However, Harlow did not stop here, he continued his research and tested the effects of complete isolation. • 36. Emotional Analysis Of Davis Guggenheim s Waiting For... Music is literally everywhere! Whether it be rocking out to your favorite song blasting through the car radio, soft melodies from the speakers lightly filling the business of the grocery store, or the latest tune in the back of your head while trying to recall how to decipher a logarithmic function on the Calculus exam, there is no escape. The musicimplemented in motion pictures is the psychological connection between the implications the director wants the audienceto learn and the essence of the emotional impact the audience should feel after viewing it, whether it be total distraught or anticipation for what will happen in the next scene. Pace of both the visual content and music highlight what the audience should feel while analyzing the message the director is getting across to the audience. In his documentary, Waiting for Superman, the film director Davis Guggenheimimplements a melodramatic soundtrack and fluctuating pace to intensify the sentiment the audience should perceive while watching the heartbreaking details and brief, yet crucial, optimistic moments unfold. Moreover, the two attributes that audiences pay the least attention to could be the most influential aspects of the film. Notably, music has a substantial emotional effect on anybody who is in hearing range of the melody. • 37. Matisse s Le Bonheur De Vivre As instrumental as Matisse and Picasso were to the development and evolution of modern art, they were inspired by CГ©zanne. In this essay, I will describe how Paul CГ©zanne s The Large Bathers (1906) inspired Matisse and Picasso but also how they evolved. It is evident that while still embracing the abstract style emerging in the turn of the century, CГ©zanne still chose to compose his painting in a classical way. (Harris Zucker, n.d.) There is still a believable perspective in the painting, even if the forms of the women are abstract but familiar. Henri Matisse s Le Bonheur de Vivre (1906) strays away from the classical style by creating a perspective that is unreal. The couple in the bottom right corner are significantly larger than the woman next to them, but also nearly equal in size to the women in the middle of the painting. The composition is very skewed because of the liberations he took in regards to perspective. There is also a more playful feel to Matisse s painting than CГ©zanne s. Not only are the figures carefree, but so are the contrasting colors and brushstrokes. This is very different from The Large Bathers but also very different ... The women are nonrepresentational and weird. This style will carry forward into the rest of Picasso s career. (MoMA, n.d.) Whereas CГ©zanne and Matisse also painted nude women, their representation isn t vulgar. This is not the case for Picasso s painting. Picasso turned Matisse s sensuality into violent pornography. (Harris Zucker, n.d. para. 11) Their poses are raunchy and shocking. It is not as sensual or lively as Matisse s painting nor as intimate or accurate as CГ©zanne s. The purpose of sexual selection is to perfect the secondary sexual characteristics, which are the morphological differences between the two sexes. On the other hand the primary sexual characteristics are the differences between the reproductive genital systems of the two sexes. Sexual selectioninstead of adapting the individual to the environment, like natural selection, it does enhance traits involved in mate acquisition. Sexual conflict, on the other hand, occurs when males and females have different reproductive interests and deriving from the urge of sexual reproduction. From the 713 matches between males of different antler sizes, 90% of the time males with the smaller antlers retreated. Also there is the intersexual selection, which is also known as the female choice. There are three cases of intersexual selection. Firstly, the female choice co evolved with trait exaggeration, otherwise called Fisher s process. Secondly, the choosy females gain direct benefit and thirdly, females are choosy because of sensory bias. Fisher s process is divided in two phases. At phase one, the female preferences evolve because the trait that they prefer is favored by natural selection and as a result, their offspring are more likely to have the beneficial trait. When there is a distinct difference in a species, which is linked with the selective advantage, the females tend to choose the males that clearly distinguish the difference that is to be observed and they will prefer the most advantageous type. As for phase two, once the female preferences exist, males with the specific trait are more fit, which is both a natural and a sexual selection advantage. As a result there will be an increasing selective force favoring stronger preferences and more extreme traits. The runaway process will eventually stop, when there is no longer genetic variation for further trait or preference exaggeration or when the viability costs of the trait, balance sexual ...
