Essay on The Impact of African-American Sitcoms on...
The Impact of African–American Sitcoms on America's Culture
Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African–Americans through characterizations,
story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping.
From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson's in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel–Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring
black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the
1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was criticized for negative stereotyping. Louise Jefferson was like an old–south "Mammy", and George, although rich, was always the butt of
someone's joke, whom no one really respected.
The difference between the earlier produced Sanford and Son and The Jefferson's was that The Jefferson's was based around a strong father figure
compared to the drunken old man in Sanford and Son who was not ever there for his children. The Jefferson's, although initially more racist like
Sanford and Son, changed with the times and became less racist. As the show went on, there were signs of less stereotyping. Louise lost her afro and
started speaking better, and George became less racist in his attitudes. This change reflected the less strained race relations in the early 1980s.
The Cosby Show was one of the biggest hits on television. It was about an African–American upper–middle–class black family. The Huxtables lived in
a fashionable neighborhood. The dad, Heathcliff, was a well–respected doctor, and the mom, Clair, was a successful attorney. Their only son, Theo,
was an underachiever, and the oldest daughter, Sondra, was a college student at Princeton. Their middle daughter, Denise, tested her parents' patience
frequently, but they always loved her. Rudy, the baby of the family, had a wonderful, entertaining childhood. All of the Huxtable kids were loved and
steered clear of serious trouble. They never really had to worry about money.

Declaration of Independence's Focus on Abuse Rather Than...
The American Declaration of Independence, penned mostly by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, is a beloved document and symbol of freedom in the hearts
and minds of Americans. The iconic, tripartite "slogan" of this document is the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." And while this is
for many the most memorable phrase in the document, the actual content focuses much more on the abuses and injuries of King George III than on
these inalienable rights. In fact, Jefferson lists twenty seven specific abuses of King George III compared to the three listed inalienable rights. The
question then arises, why does Jefferson parse his argument for independence in such a way? This essay seeks to show that Jefferson chose to focus on

By no means was Thomas Jefferson a bigot or racist; he was a product of his era, an era of slavery and social injustice for blacks. While writing about
the rights of all men, he would have had to realize that saying all men have a right to liberty contradicted his own ownership of many slaves. Thus,
he keeps the discussion of the rights of man short and focuses on the not hypocritical attack on George III. He pays lip service to the idealistic view
of equality of men but focuses on the more concrete abuses and injuries of the King to justify independence for America. Jefferson's cursory treatment
of the rights of man and lengthier attention to George III's mistreatment is also a product of his audience. Jefferson is not writing to somehow change
the mind of Britons or their King. America had been at war with Britain for a year when Jefferson wrote the Declaration, having fought Lexington,
Concord, and Bunker Hill a full year or more before the Declaration would be signed. He wrote more to edify and encourage his compatriots and
remind them of the reason for war and inspire them to victory. Within days of its completion and signing, the Declaration was copied by George
Dunlap for distribution and had been transmitted to many prominent Americans, including General George Washington. A fragment of the copy
Washington had remains in the Library of Congress to this day. Washington ordered the Declaration read to all his

George Washington And Jefferson 's Influence On The...
There are very few people who wouldn't think about George Washington,John Adams and Thomas Jefferson when someone mentions the Founding
Fathers. Without a doubt we can say that they were three very important men who greatly affected the independence of our country. Out of three,
Washington and Jefferson are more talked about. They helped form this nation into a sovereign and free country. Both were great men who did so
much to shape and protect this country and it is impossible to say that one did a better job than the other. Washington and Jefferson did what was
best for this county even though they had different views on many issues. Both grew up in Virginia, but they were from two different class levels of
living. Jefferson grew up in more famous and richer family which gave him many opportunities in education. He went to college where he was
introduced to the writings of Isaac Newton,John Locke, and Francis Bacon which later influenced his political views. After Jefferson graduated from
college he worked as a lawyer and later got into politics. Prior to his presidency he had many government positions such as Member of Virginia
House of Burgesses,Member of Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia,Secretary of State, just to list a few. He was well educated in many
different fields. Because Jefferson had very good writing skills he was asked to write the main draft of Declaration of Independence, but when he was

Rhetorical Devices In The Declaration Of Independence
In 1776 America's founding fathers decided to separate from their mother country, Great Britain, and live as independent states. In the Declaration of
Independence, Thomas Jefferson writes that the "United colonies...ought to be free and Independent States," (lines 131–133) after they have undergone
a long string of abuses by King George. As he writes the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson's purpose is to give reason to the colonists, the King
and the foreign worldly powers of why the colonists feel the need to separate themselves from Great Britain. In the Declaration Jefferson faces the
challenge of persuading his audience that the colonists need to dissolve from Great Britain, he overcomes this by using rhetorical devices to convince
the audience that the colonists have certain rights the British are not protecting, the colonists have long been abused by King George and the colonists
have tried to reason with the British, but they need to become independent states. The first part of the Declaration deals... Show more content on

This reluctant conclusion becomes evident when Jefferson states, " [The colonists] repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury."
(lines 111–112). Furthermore Jefferson lists recent actions of the colonists through saying, "We have warned them...We have reminded them...We have
appealed...We have conjured them," (lines 116–120) to give his audience further evidence to why the United Colonies must and will become "Free and
Independent States," (line 136). States with the "full Power to levy war, conclude Peace, contract alliances, establish Commerce, and do all other Acts
and Things which Independent States may of right to do." (lines 136–139). As Jefferson comes to his reluctant conclusion he also enhances his

How America Should Be Governed By Thomas Paine, George...
Throughout the Late 18th century America was becoming their own independent nation. The new independent nation needed to set up a government to
rule them. There were several discussions on how America would be governed. Many people had different ideas for America and yet some were
similar. Thomas Paine, George Washington,Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson all wrote their ideas on how America should
set up their government. Some of these ideas were not used while some are still used today. Thomas Paine states his ideas for the government in his
Common Sense written in 1776. Paine states that America should not have a king. The first king might be great but then ruling by divine right
usually ends up with the people having terrible kings. Once a monarch is put into place it becomes extremely hard to remove. Today in America we
still do not have kings which is very good for America. The democracy system that we have in place gives Americans many rights and overall good
country to live in unlike 3rd world countries. Paine brings up the point that most subjects under a king do not revolt do to fear and superstition. This
made me wonder why they would fear. The subjects would outnumber the royalty and their guards if they would all stand together. Paine stated that we
should break all connection with Britain and only be trading partners instead of allies. This did not come true. America to this day is allies with Britain.
Paine also states that anytime

Biography of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson
George Washington was commander in chief of the Continental army during the American Revolution and later became the first president of the
United States serving from1789 until 1797. He symbolized qualities of discipline, aristocratic duty, military orthodoxy and persistence in adversity that
his contemporaries valued as marked of mature political leadership
George spent his early years on the family estate on Pope's Creek along the Potomac River. AlthoughWashington had little or no formal schooling, his
early notebooks indicate that he read in geography, military history, agriculture, deportment and composition. He showed an aptitude for surveying and

In January 1759 he married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy and attractive young widow with two small children.
Alarmed by the repressive measures of the British crown and Parliament, Washington became a leader in Virginia's opposition to Great Britain's
colonial policies. At first he hoped for reconciliation with Britain. In July, 1774 he presided over a meeting in Alexandria that adopted the Fairfax
Resolves, calling for the establishment and enforcement of a stringent boycott on British imports prior to similar action by the First Continental
Congress. As a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congress 1774 and 1775 Washington did not participate actively in the deliberations,
however, his presence was undoubtedly a stabilizing influence. In June 1775 he was Congress's unanimous choice as commander in chief of the newly
created Continental Army when fighting broke out between Massachusetts and the British.
Washington took command of the troops surrounding British–occupied Boston on July 3, devoting the next few months to training the undisciplined
14,000 man army and trying to secure urgently needed powder and other supplies. Early in March 1776, he took command of the makeshift force and
moved his army to New York. Defeated there by the combined land and sea forces of General William Howe, he withdrew from Manhattan to establish

Two Historical Figures That Changed America
Two Historical Figures That Changed America In 1786, Shay's Rebellion sparked an uprising against the Massachusetts legislator, due to the unfair
taxes that were placed on the farmer's land. This would leave the Massachusetts legislator vulnerable, seeing that the legislator could not call for a
militia, considering that the militia was held by Daniel Shay. Nevertheless, a private military was raised to stop Shay's Rebellion, and George
Washington would come out of retirement to support the military. And to ensure that this incident does not occur again, Alexander Hamilton would
call for the Constitutional Convention in 1787, so that the delegates could form a new government for the United States. As a result, the Constitution
was developed by numerous philosophical concepts that originated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

national government that promoted economic growth and a strong friendship with Great Britain. Additionally, Hamilton wanted all the power from the
states to transfer to the national government, by having all the states in debt to the national government. Last of all, Hamilton's philosophy was that the
government should benefit the rich, because Hamilton was inspired by the idea of an aristocratic society, when Hamilton would look at Great

Declaration Of Independence Rhetorical Analysis Essay
The physicality of an individual can endure many trials, but the resilience of the soul can overcome the greatest obstacles. The hearts of many
American colonists grew weary as they continued their path of adversity for independence. The American colonists faced the toughest battles toward
the end of the 18th century, where they experienced physical hardships and faintness of their soul. To overcome British tyranny, the deteriorating
colonies needed to unite with one internal desire. The Declaration of Independence consisted of many key components that gave the colonists reason to
join arms and fight for their independence. Brought into this world on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia, Jefferson maintained a higher status in
society. Unlike... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was given the responsibility, by the continental congress, to compose a draft of the declaration. Jefferson took this opportunity to compose one of
the greatest testaments in American history. He utilized rhetorical strategies that encouraged and uplifted the colonists. By listing all the acts of
tyranny that King George III committed, Jefferson stirred up feelings of anger and disappointment into the colonists. An example from the Declaration
of Independence, "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people"(US 1776). In this quote,
Jefferson writes about King George III ruining the lives of American colonists. Jefferson's goal was to open the eyes of the colonists to fight against
King George's tyranny. Colonists gained inspiration from Jefferson's work, and they united with one common goal–to gain independence. Though this
document was intended to inspire the colonists, it was also written as a formal and official document so that King George III would interpret it in a
serious manner. The Second purpose Jefferson had for the Declaration of Independence was to declare America's independence from Great Britain.
Jefferson is speaking directly to King George III of Great Britain when he declares America as an independent new

All in the Family
All in the Family
In 1971, New York Times columnist Fred Ferretti wrote an article about a new television series called All in the Family. Ferretti asked, whether or not
if racism and bigotry were considered funny and he concluded that it was not and as a result believed that the show was lacking good taste. Apparently,
the television viewers of America disagreed. Running from 1971 to 1979, All In The Family wasn't the first television series to tackle major issues on
a major network, but what was innovative about the series, was that is that it hewed its situational comedy from topical issues, and it explored them
through characters we got to know and cared about every week. Simply put, All in the Family wasn't just a great situational comedy; it as was an
ongoing national conversation rooted in well–written, well–acted and multifaceted characters.
In 1969, a young comedy writer named Norman Lear was given approval by CBS to create an American version of the popular British sitcom Till
Death Do Us Part. Produced and developed by Lear, this concept of a sitcom about a blue–collar family would eventually become, All in the Family.
Premiering in January of 1971, the series focused on the lives of a working–class family from the New York City borough of Queens, The Bunkers.

Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Founding Fathers, George Washington. Do these names sound familiar to you?
Hopefully they do, because all of these famous historical figures helped us to create the American government that we know today. As the young
American government was being created, there were many documents that contributed to the ideas that helped us shape our nation. When the Founding
Fathers were developing our government they looked back to famous writing of European Enlightenment thinkers. Two main documents the Founding
Fathers started relied on were "Two Treatises" by John Locke and "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes. When the Founding Fathers were writing the Articles
of Confederation and the US Constitution, they needed starting point to base their government off of. As they were reading these documents, it became
more and more obvious to be a successful independent Country they would need to create a strong government that would not only control everything

To fix this, they decided to split up the power so that no one person or one small group of people had complete power. Instead, they made branches
such as executive, legislative, and judicial and together these groups help to run our government. Even though each branch has a lot of power, they do
not have control of everything. The Founding Fathers created the system of checks and balances so that whenever a branch made a decision the other
branches had a say in whether it was fair or not to the

Who Is Thomas Jefferson A Good President
Thomas Jefferson is one of the most important Presidents involved with the founding of America. His contributions are described in America's Third
President by Sandra Jacobson. He served over 50 years in the New American Union. He held positions such as a Governor and as President. Everything
that Thomas Jefferson did undoubtedly made him the strongest President out of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
Thomas Jefferson started his political journey by serving in the Continental Congress in 1775. One year after, he single handedly drafted the
Declaration of Independence, a document that reflects the values of American government using his philosophical thinking. The Declaration of
Independence is viewed as one of the most important documents in American History. He then took positions such as the Secretary of State and Vice
President until he became the third President of the United States in 1801. During his Presidency wanted to expand American westward. In order to do

Persuasive Speech
I'm Henry Jefferson and this is how school changed my life.
It was a warm sunny day in March, everything was normal or so I thought. I got up at 6:00 a.m sharp. I took a shower, then got dressed and ate
breakfast. Once I was done with breakfast I did my hair and brushed my teeth. Then, I went to my bus stop and got on the bus. I go to Guava Middle
School in Montana. It is a nice school with good teachers. Most of the kids that go to our School are pretty wealthy, so we have nice things.
When I walked into the commons my friends told me a rumor "Hey Henry did you hear that Champ was going to come to school with a gun and shoot
it up?" Mark asked. Mark is a really good friend of mine that I have known since Kindergarten.
"WHAT, we should go tell the officeright now. This could be a real danger to our school." I said.
" Quit being such a wuss. He's just doing it to scare us. Plus, where would he even get a gun at?" Jackson stated.
" I'm not being a wuss." I yelled. "I'm just worried that he will shoot us because of what we did to him."
"What did we do to him that would make him shoot up the 8th grade?" Mark asked.
"Do you not remember? We 'bullied' him and beat him up for taking my lunch money." I said, starting to get annoyed.
"Oh yea now I remember now." Mark and Jackson said.
"Yea this could be a real threat we should tell the office." I said again.
"Yea, lets go after first period." Mark said. Just then the bell rang and everyone in the commons scrambled

Thomas Jefferson's "The Declaration of Independence" shook the world when it was released on July 4, 1776. Jefferson was in charge of draft the
document announcing that the colonies have severed ties with Great Britain. Jefferson's strong use of anaphora, ethos, and diction generates a
compelling document. Jefferson uses anaphora for the majority of the "Declaration of Independence". This is because he wants the grievances to
be easily identifiable to the audience. He starts off with "To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world" as a signal that the following text
is under the same idea (Jefferson 238). Jefferson then uses "He has..." to list each and every grievances in no significant order to give clarify the
actions King George did to the colonies (238). Jefferson also uses anaphora when the colonists tries to appeal to Great Britain. "We been wanting in

Television can be considered a cultural forum. By cultural forum, this means issues and points of view can be discussed openly and almost without

Men, being as stubborn as they are, continue the racial barrage and eventually stop talking.
In the episode of Father Knows Best, Betty seeks to pursue a traditionally male–dominated profession. Even though society looks down upon it, Betty
still perseveres in her endeavors to pursue a job she likes. Due to the current times, society sets a certain standard and you are expected to follow
along with it. Going against the grain is usually shunned or you are set apart from everyone else. I feel this is a great quality, and more people should
be like this.
In these two episodes, discrimination is evident. In Father Knows Best Betty is discriminated against for attempting to pursue a profession that, in that
time, was male–dominated. In 2005, men and women should be considered equals in the work force, and be entitled to the same opportunities. In that
era, women were teachers, men were doctors, etc. There were standard jobs for each sex. This is fine to talk about because it is in the TV realm.
Writers are allowed to poke fun at society's unwritten standards. In All in the Family Archie discriminates again African Americans and George
discriminates against Caucasians. Archie is brutally honest, even for our generation. His complete disregard for feelings almost makes him appear
archaic, but when put under a microscope, we see the writers are challenging society, pushing the envelope even further. This freedom

The Declaration of Independence was a statement adopted by the thirteen colonies to represent their new found independence from Great Britain. In

1775) The Declaration main complete however was not against George III, it lay instead in the first lines of its second paragraph, ringing statements
of principle that have served ever since as the ideal to which Americans aspire. "We hold these truths to be self–evident; That all men are created equal;
that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure
these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of
government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it; to institute new government." (Norton, M. B. et

ramification of their act. They committed a crime, which was a capital offense. Congress had no clue had long it would take to make America its
own colony. They began to devise a plan that would allow them to take over by getting new people into office and not be run by the same government
that had controlled them since 1774. Political leaders did not think that it would be best if legislative did not write the laws that applied to them. States

Declaration of Independence Assessment 1.) Jefferson states the reasoning behind the writing of the Declaration of Independence. His reasoning is to
declare the causes that propel a group toward separation. 2.) The government acquires its power from the people. 3.) The "unalienable rights" that
Jefferson refers to are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. 4.) Jefferson holds the English rulers accountable for the misfortunes of the colonies.
5.) The final statement of the Declaration of Independence displays a confident, yet eloquent tone with a bit of defiance thrown in. These tones are
effective in conveying the importance of this document because he uses his tone to emotionally connect with the colonists. He also uses his tone and

"Self–evident" means clearly true and requiring no proof or explanation (Merriam–Webster Dictionary). Jefferson says these four truths are
self–evident: that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain rights, to secure these rights, governments are created, and finally,
that if these governments affect the unalienable rights given to men, that the people have the right to abolish that government. I do believe all of these
are self–evident because they are founded clearly on the fact that the people should have the power and say in the government. 8.) "Absolute
despotism" means absolute power or control (Dictionary.com). Jefferson says it is the "right and duty" of mankind to fight absolute despotism because
it would be the downfall of a country. Power should be divided within a country and not centered or controlled by one specific organization or

The Declaration of Independence is formal. In The Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson calls for the separation of the American colonists
from the grips of an abusive and tyrannical England. He makes his position clear to the colonist and most importantly the world by using persuasive
appeals, syntax and diction. In the first two paragraphs he not only establishes the credibility of the revolutionaries, but also lays out a logical
argument that sets forth the philosophical beliefs upon which America was founded. Beginning in line 45 Jefferson lays down his massive list of
specific grievances that the King of England has committed against America. He states that he is very well aware that King George has "refused his

So after all of these cries for action the Americans have come to the conclusion that their so called brethren are, "Enemies in War, in Peace Friends."
The chiasmus conveys perfectly that Jefferson and the colonies are willing to go to war with even their families for the price of freedom. The
chiasmus ending Jefferson's second to last paragraph also further establishes his credibility. It shows that he and his revolutionaries will stand by their
"unalienable rights," no matter the cost. In the final paragraph Jefferson again furthers his credibility when he calls his fellow revolutionaries, "the
good People of these Colonies." This statement in essence means that colonist are not uncivilized monsters who just want to get rid of the king, but are
actual good natured people. Jefferson climaxes the last paragraph with the statement, "we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and
our sacred Honor," a chilling statement that ultimately paints its speaker and his cohorts as heroes willing to risk their whole existence for their

George Washington And Thomas Jefferson
John Adams (1735–1826) has the historically unfortunate position of being president between two American icons, George Washington and Thomas
Jefferson. His presidency is often overlooked by scholars and even occasionally viewed as an undeserving president who won the office out of early
American political maneuvering (McCullough 2001, 29). Nonetheless, he led the young nation during the end of the French Revolution and the
emergence of Napoleon Bonaparte, a globally tumultuous period. The nation, and the world, has changed dramatically since the end of the eighteenth
century. However, the domestic and foreign concerns that Adams had to manage and attempt to resolve are still relevant to current circumstances. Even
though Adams only served one term over 200 years ago, through an analysis of his background, personality, presidential leadership and managerial
style, and his interactions with Congress and the American people, a twenty–first century incoming president is able to learn from Adams' mistakes
and triumphs.
Life Before the Presidency John Adams was raised in a Puritan household in colonial Massachusetts during the eighteenth century. Although not a
deeply religious or pious man, the Puritan values of selfless service, modesty, and unflinching dedication were deeply instilled into Adams at a young
age and would have lasting impacts on his personality and work ethic throughout his life (McCullough 2001, 54). After attending Harvard, Adams

George Washington became the first president of the United States in 1789, and Thomas Jefferson became the third president of the United States in
1801, shortly after. The United States of America was a brand new country and there were still quite a few kinks to solve in the government.
Establishing a stable government was important for a baby country like the United States, and George Washington andThomas Jefferson helped do that
during both presidential terms. George Washington played a large role in implementing a strong and secure government through many parts of his
presidency. As soon as George Washington was appointed to being President and sworn into office, the first members in Congress were also elected to

As soon as Thomas Jefferson began his journey as the President of the United States, Jefferson brought an end to the Alien and Sedition Acts, brought
forth by John Adams. The passing of the Alien and Sedition Acts by John Adams and the rest of the Federalist party caused hostility toward the
government, so with the termination of the acts, the government began to regain its calmness. Jefferson also bought the Louisiana Purchase in
presidency term. The Louisiana Purchase, bought from France at the total cost of $15 million, encouraged the citizens of the United States to expand
west. The expansion caused the economy to flourish, making the government more financially stable. Jefferson also created a democratic
non–aristocratic government. The idea was that in order to be a better government, the government should govern less, so that is what the government
did. This form of government made sure that not one person rose to absolute power and in doing so, it kept the interests of the people in mind, so the
people were happy. Another accomplishment of Thomas Jefferson's presidency was the death of the Federalist party. Seeing as the government no
longer was divided, it was more stable. Thomas Jefferson's eradication of the Alien and Sedition Acts caused more stability in the government through
ending the hostility the acts were bringing to the people. Because of the end of the Alien and Sedition Acts, the people were less hostile, which caused
the government to become more stable. When Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Purchase, it caused many people to spread out west. The buying of
the Louisiana Purchase contributed to the stability of the American government by bringing forth financial aid as the economy thrived. The creation of
the democratic non–aristocratic government made the government more stable because the people of the United States were happy and

Impact Of Thomas Jefferson And Geroge Washington On The...
Thomas Jefferson and Geroge Washington played a large role in the stability of the government. George Washington was well respected among the
public, which is why he was elected as the first president of America after the U.S. had officially become independent from Britain. Moreover, Thomas
Jefferson was also a well–respected leader and believed in economic equality for everyone. Overall they both helped shape America for the better in the
ways they led the country throughout their presidency.
Washington was a man of character and rarely used force to settle issues. During the Whiskey Rebellion, which was caused by the tax placed on
whiskey, George Washington personally led his troops to go stop the rebellion. This was the first realization of the need for a stronger central
government. Although many Americans did not like the strong central government style of leading because it reminded them of their past rulership, it
was needed for America to become stable. Washington's response to the uproar helped build relations between people and the tax collectors, which...

getting involved with foreign affairs, Jefferson passed the Embargo Act which banned trading with foreign countries. Although this was disliked, it
helped create America's manufacturing. This also helped to stabilize the economy of America. Although Thomas Jefferson opposed the bank, he
opposed it because he thought it gave too much power to the national government. He also believed that the constitution did not have the power to do
this. This helped stabilize the government because it allows states to form their own banks and charter

In 1776, since Jefferson was a member of Continental Congress, he was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence, since he was a member of
Continental Congress. (Brief...Jefferson, 2005). Looking back in High School, the class discussion about The Declaration of Independence was that
Jefferson predicted the coming of great changes in America within the times that he lived in. He wrote this document for the American Citizens at the
time, and it still exists today. The Declaration personified many of the ideas that separated the colonies from England and therefore the process of

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Benjamin Banneker's Letter
Analysis of Benjamin Banneker's Letter
Benjamin Banneker wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson and George Washington in it he states, "We hold these truths to be self
–evident, that all men are
created equal, and that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"
which presents the facts that all men should be treated equally (Banneker 21). This is not happening, therefore Benjamin Banneker was obliged to
write a letter. In his letter, he suggests the abolition of slavery because, as stated in his letter, "all men are created equal" (Banneker 23). In Benjamin
Banneker's letter to Thomas Jefferson he exploits fear tactics and formal diction to effectively persuade Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
Benjamin Banneker utilizes fear tactics to efficiently drive his point of abolishing slavery home. In his letter he states, "you cannot but acknowledge
that the present freedom of mercifully received and that it is the peculiar blessings of Heaven"(Banneker 11). This quote displays fear tactics directed
at Jefferson and Washington because he is implying that even though everything is tranquil now because of the blessings from heaven, it will not be if
slavery continues. Therefore, making Thomas Jefferson and George Washington fearful of what Benjamin Banneker will do or what will happen if
slavery is not abolished. Making the two men fearful is an effective way for Benjamin to get his point

All of these answers are superficial and simply the first historical person that someone could think of. In fact, I know I would have answered with
George Washington. He was the first one to my mind, but why? Do I really want to have dinner with George Washington? What would I even talk
to him about? I imagine the conversation would go something like this, " Me: So uhm, I just wanted to thank you for crossing the Delaware River

Compare And Contrast Thomas Jefferson And George Washington
Chief Diplomat is defined as a leader who oversees, creates, and executes foreign relations and policies between the United States and other countries.
The two most influential "Chief Diplomats" the US has ever had were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. George Washington thrusted into the
presidency by unanimous vote of the electoral college. Throughout his presidency, George Washington developed the country further than any president
who would follow did. Washington was able to defend the homeland and support the United State's foreign relations through his passing of the
Neutrality Proclamation, Jay's Treaty, and the Treaty of Tripoli. Many historians would argue thatThomas Jefferson made strides in advancing the
nation much further through his accomplishment of acquiring the Louisiana Territory. Although neither president perfectly accomplished all goals they
set out to complete, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson single–handedly accomplished, shaped, and developed the nation through treaties and
foreign relations far more than any other pair of presidents during their terms as president. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson developed
many treaties during their terms as president, but each had one treaty that made them stand out from other presidents to make them superior Chief
Diplomats. For Thomas Jefferson this treaty is clearly the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States,

Thomas Jefferson And George Washington Compare And Contrast
Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were very paramount to the success of colonial America in the Revolutionary War. Despite both being very
excellent leaders, they were both very different; Jefferson resided on political issues while Washington preferred working with actual conflict. George
Washington liked to be in the thick of things, in the heat of battle. He would often ride out into the middle of gunfire on a trusty stead with little to no
hesitation. His bravery was astonishing, but what was even more incredible was his military strategizing and planning. He maintained strict regiment
over all soldiers under his jurisdiction, rarely losing any battles. Jefferson, however, was very different.

Declaration Of Independence Summary
When the Declaration of independence (US 1776) was written, the colonies were in full revolt against England. The purpose of the document was to
announce the colonies separation from England. Declaration of Independence is infused with the enlightenment ideals of liberty and equality. This
manifesto was a cry for freedom from the tyranny of the King and signaled a new era in world government. One where the people ruled, rather than
Kings and Queens. The Declaration of Independence, is based on the theory that the government and the governed enter into a contract whereby the
governed give up some rights in exchange for protection from the government. If the government violates the remaining rights or does not provide the
promised protection, the governed can say the contract is invalid, or not in effect, and end the government. The Declaration of Independence states the
reasons the Colonists believe that England, through George III, had violated its contract with the Colonies, giving them right reason to declare
independence. "In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions... Show more

Comedy And Social Ideas Of Norman Lear
Norman Lear was picked as a nominee for the prestigious Kennedy Center Award. Instead of accepting the award, Lear decided to boycott the
Kennedy Center ceremony in December at the White House to protest Donald Trump presidency. Norman Lear has embodied the role as an agent of
change because throughout his life, he has been breaking societal norms and discussing issues in society that people are afraid to talk about.
Specifically, in 1971, a groundbreaking Americantelevision sitcom broke through societal boundaries and transformed the way that the American
audience viewed television. Engulfed by the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, fight for women's right, and the Watergate
scandal, Norman Lear persevered through stereotypes and entertainment norms with his show All in the Family. This show approached its audience in a
very blunt and crude manner; it made conflict the center of its comedy. It dealt with contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which allowed
blue–collar workers to learn about their current everyday issues and concerns. Therefore, from declining his Kennedy Center Award because of his
dislike for the President to breaking the taboos of television in the 1970s, Norman Lear has remained a visible changemaker in our society.
Lear fused comedy and serious social issues together. All in the Family became the center of national debate between comedy and social issues.

Thesis Of The Declaration Of Independence
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence for the American colonists to proclaim freedom from Great Britain's dictator, King George
III. American colonists had been suffering for many years when this important document was drafted. King George III had pushed the colonists into a
state of tyranny and most decided it was time to start an independent nation under a different type of government. Jefferson focused his piece toward
many audiences. He wanted not only King George III and the British Parliament to know the American's feelings, but also the entire world. The time
had come for an huge change amongst the American colonists and Jefferson made sure everyone was aware of it by using his superior strategies of

Character Analysis Of Norman Lear
Living by the restrictions that society places upon us, humanity is constrained to follow rules. Television writers were forced to write a certain way and
were forced to leave out information that society would deem as improper, rude, and even racist. However, in 1971, a groundbreaking American
television sitcom broke through societal boundaries and transformed the way that the American audience viewed television. Engulfed by the Vietnam
War, Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, fight for women's right, and the Watergate scandal, Norman Lear persevered through stereotypes
and entertainment norms with his show All in the Family. This show approached its audience in a very blunt and crude manner; it made conflict the
center of its comedy. It dealt with contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which blue allowed blue–collar workers to learn about their current
everyday issues and concerns. Through his show All in the Family, Norman Lear highlighted sensitive topics such as racism, bigotry, and sexual
relations to prove that they are still alive in our country; thus, Norman Lear is an agent of change by bringing awareness to social issues.
Born in 1922 to a very atypical family, Norman Lear had to become very independent. Norman Lear's father, Herman, was a conman who was
arrested when Norman was nine years old. In an interview with PBS broadcast journalist Jeffrey Brown, Norman relives the moments of his dad's
arrest, recounting the time when a man came up to him, pat him on his shoulder, and uttered "[Norman] You're the man in the house"(Source). It was
at this moment that Lear realized the foolishness of the human condition. He wondered what kind of person would place such a great responsibility
on a nine year old child, especially during times of hardship and sadness. What made Norman Lear's childhood even appalling was that he could not
rely on his mother for support; everything Norman did was only satisfactory in her eyes. To escape his unsupportive life, Lear enlisted in the military
and became a fighter pilot during World War II. After completing 52 combat missions, he headed west in an effort to make a social impact through

Essay On The Impact Of African-American Sitcoms On...

  • 1. Essay on The Impact of African-American Sitcoms on... The Impact of African–American Sitcoms on America's Culture Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African–Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson's in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel–Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the 1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was criticized for negative stereotyping. Louise Jefferson was like an old–south "Mammy", and George, although rich, was always the butt of someone's joke, whom no one really respected. The difference between the earlier produced Sanford and Son and The Jefferson's was that The Jefferson's was based around a strong father figure compared to the drunken old man in Sanford and Son who was not ever there for his children. The Jefferson's, although initially more racist like Sanford and Son, changed with the times and became less racist. As the show went on, there were signs of less stereotyping. Louise lost her afro and started speaking better, and George became less racist in his attitudes. This change reflected the less strained race relations in the early 1980s. The Cosby Show was one of the biggest hits on television. It was about an African–American upper–middle–class black family. The Huxtables lived in a fashionable neighborhood. The dad, Heathcliff, was a well–respected doctor, and the mom, Clair, was a successful attorney. Their only son, Theo, was an underachiever, and the oldest daughter, Sondra, was a college student at Princeton. Their middle daughter, Denise, tested her parents' patience frequently, but they always loved her. Rudy, the baby of the family, had a wonderful, entertaining childhood. All of the Huxtable kids were loved and steered clear of serious trouble. They never really had to worry about money. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Declaration of Independence's Focus on Abuse Rather Than... The American Declaration of Independence, penned mostly by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, is a beloved document and symbol of freedom in the hearts and minds of Americans. The iconic, tripartite "slogan" of this document is the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." And while this is for many the most memorable phrase in the document, the actual content focuses much more on the abuses and injuries of King George III than on these inalienable rights. In fact, Jefferson lists twenty seven specific abuses of King George III compared to the three listed inalienable rights. The question then arises, why does Jefferson parse his argument for independence in such a way? This essay seeks to show that Jefferson chose to focus on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By no means was Thomas Jefferson a bigot or racist; he was a product of his era, an era of slavery and social injustice for blacks. While writing about the rights of all men, he would have had to realize that saying all men have a right to liberty contradicted his own ownership of many slaves. Thus, he keeps the discussion of the rights of man short and focuses on the not hypocritical attack on George III. He pays lip service to the idealistic view of equality of men but focuses on the more concrete abuses and injuries of the King to justify independence for America. Jefferson's cursory treatment of the rights of man and lengthier attention to George III's mistreatment is also a product of his audience. Jefferson is not writing to somehow change the mind of Britons or their King. America had been at war with Britain for a year when Jefferson wrote the Declaration, having fought Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill a full year or more before the Declaration would be signed. He wrote more to edify and encourage his compatriots and remind them of the reason for war and inspire them to victory. Within days of its completion and signing, the Declaration was copied by George Dunlap for distribution and had been transmitted to many prominent Americans, including General George Washington. A fragment of the copy Washington had remains in the Library of Congress to this day. Washington ordered the Declaration read to all his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. George Washington And Jefferson 's Influence On The... There are very few people who wouldn't think about George Washington,John Adams and Thomas Jefferson when someone mentions the Founding Fathers. Without a doubt we can say that they were three very important men who greatly affected the independence of our country. Out of three, Washington and Jefferson are more talked about. They helped form this nation into a sovereign and free country. Both were great men who did so much to shape and protect this country and it is impossible to say that one did a better job than the other. Washington and Jefferson did what was best for this county even though they had different views on many issues. Both grew up in Virginia, but they were from two different class levels of living. Jefferson grew up in more famous and richer family which gave him many opportunities in education. He went to college where he was introduced to the writings of Isaac Newton,John Locke, and Francis Bacon which later influenced his political views. After Jefferson graduated from college he worked as a lawyer and later got into politics. Prior to his presidency he had many government positions such as Member of Virginia House of Burgesses,Member of Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia,Secretary of State, just to list a few. He was well educated in many different fields. Because Jefferson had very good writing skills he was asked to write the main draft of Declaration of Independence, but when he was done it was edited so much. Another writing, which Jefferson ... • 4. Rhetorical Devices In The Declaration Of Independence In 1776 America's founding fathers decided to separate from their mother country, Great Britain, and live as independent states. In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson writes that the "United colonies...ought to be free and Independent States," (lines 131–133) after they have undergone a long string of abuses by King George. As he writes the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson's purpose is to give reason to the colonists, the King and the foreign worldly powers of why the colonists feel the need to separate themselves from Great Britain. In the Declaration Jefferson faces the challenge of persuading his audience that the colonists need to dissolve from Great Britain, he overcomes this by using rhetorical devices to convince the audience that the colonists have certain rights the British are not protecting, the colonists have long been abused by King George and the colonists have tried to reason with the British, but they need to become independent states. • 5. How America Should Be Governed By Thomas Paine, George... Throughout the Late 18th century America was becoming their own independent nation. The new independent nation needed to set up a government to rule them. There were several discussions on how America would be governed. Many people had different ideas for America and yet some were similar. Thomas Paine, George Washington,Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson all wrote their ideas on how America should set up their government. Some of these ideas were not used while some are still used today. Thomas Paine states his ideas for the government in his Common Sense written in 1776. Paine states that America should not have a king. The first king might be great but then ruling by divine right usually ends up with the people having terrible kings. Once a monarch is put into place it becomes extremely hard to remove. Today in America we still do not have kings which is very good for America. The democracy system that we have in place gives Americans many rights and overall good country to live in unlike 3rd world countries. Paine brings up the point that most subjects under a king do not revolt do to fear and superstition. This made me wonder why they would fear. The subjects would outnumber the royalty and their guards if they would all stand together. Paine stated that we should break all connection with Britain and only be trading partners instead of allies. This did not come true. America to this day is allies with Britain. Paine also states that anytime ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Biography of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Essay Biography of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson George Washington was commander in chief of the Continental army during the American Revolution and later became the first president of the United States serving from1789 until 1797. He symbolized qualities of discipline, aristocratic duty, military orthodoxy and persistence in adversity that his contemporaries valued as marked of mature political leadership George spent his early years on the family estate on Pope's Creek along the Potomac River. In January 1759 he married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy and attractive young widow with two small children. Alarmed by the repressive measures of the British crown and Parliament, Washington became a leader in Virginia's opposition to Great Britain's colonial policies. At first he hoped for reconciliation with Britain. In July, 1774 he presided over a meeting in Alexandria that adopted the Fairfax Resolves, calling for the establishment and enforcement of a stringent boycott on British imports prior to similar action by the First Continental Congress. As a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congress 1774 and 1775 Washington did not participate actively in the deliberations, however, his presence was undoubtedly a stabilizing influence. In June 1775 he was Congress's unanimous choice as commander in chief of the newly created Continental Army when fighting broke out between Massachusetts and the British. Washington took command of the troops surrounding British–occupied Boston on July 3, devoting the next few months to training the undisciplined 14,000 man army and trying to secure urgently needed powder and other supplies. Early in March 1776, he took command of the makeshift force and moved his army to New York. Two Historical Figures That Changed America Two Historical Figures That Changed America In 1786, Shay's Rebellion sparked an uprising against the Massachusetts legislator, due to the unfair taxes that were placed on the farmer's land. This would leave the Massachusetts legislator vulnerable, seeing that the legislator could not call for a militia, considering that the militia was held by Daniel Shay. Nevertheless, a private military was raised to stop Shay's Rebellion, and George Washington would come out of retirement to support the military. And to ensure that this incident does not occur again, Alexander Hamilton would call for the Constitutional Convention in 1787, so that the delegates could form a new government for the United States. Likewise, Hamilton would defend the National Bank by relying on the notion of implied powers of the Constitution, indicating that Hamilton favored loose construction than strict construction. Moreover, Hamilton would become the founder of the Federalist Party, which called for a strong national government that promoted economic growth and a strong friendship with Great Britain. Additionally, Hamilton wanted all the power from the states to transfer to the national government, by having all the states in debt to the national government. • 8. Declaration Of Independence Rhetorical Analysis Essay The physicality of an individual can endure many trials, but the resilience of the soul can overcome the greatest obstacles. The hearts of many American colonists grew weary as they continued their path of adversity for independence. The American colonists faced the toughest battles toward the end of the 18th century, where they experienced physical hardships and faintness of their soul. To overcome British tyranny, the deteriorating colonies needed to unite with one internal desire. The Declaration of Independence consisted of many key components that gave the colonists reason to join arms and fight for their independence. Brought into this world on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia, Jefferson maintained a higher status in society. Unlike... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was given the responsibility, by the continental congress, to compose a draft of the declaration. Jefferson took this opportunity to compose one of the greatest testaments in American history. He utilized rhetorical strategies that encouraged and uplifted the colonists. By listing all the acts of tyranny that King George III committed, Jefferson stirred up feelings of anger and disappointment into the colonists. An example from the Declaration of Independence, "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people"(US 1776). In this quote, Jefferson writes about King George III ruining the lives of American colonists. Jefferson's goal was to open the eyes of the colonists to fight against King George's tyranny. Colonists gained inspiration from Jefferson's work, and they united with one common goal–to gain independence. Though this document was intended to inspire the colonists, it was also written as a formal and official document so that King George III would interpret it in a serious manner. • 9. All in the Family All in the Family In 1971, New York Times columnist Fred Ferretti wrote an article about a new television series called All in the Family. Ferretti asked, whether or not if racism and bigotry were considered funny and he concluded that it was not and as a result believed that the show was lacking good taste. Apparently, the television viewers of America disagreed. Running from 1971 to 1979, All In The Family wasn't the first television series to tackle major issues on a major network, but what was innovative about the series, was that is that it hewed its situational comedy from topical issues, and it explored them through characters we got to know and cared about every week. Simply put, All in the Family wasn't just a great situational comedy; it as was an ongoing national conversation rooted in well–written, well–acted and multifaceted characters. In 1969, a young comedy writer named Norman Lear was given approval by CBS to create an American version of the popular British sitcom Till Death Do Us Part. Produced and developed by Lear, this concept of a sitcom about a blue–collar family would eventually become, All in the Family. Premiering in January of 1971, the series focused on the lives of a working–class family from the New York City borough of Queens, The Bunkers. Do these names sound familiar to you? Hopefully they do, because all of these famous historical figures helped us to create the American government that we know today. As the young American government was being created, there were many documents that contributed to the ideas that helped us shape our nation. When the Founding Fathers were developing our government they looked back to famous writing of European Enlightenment thinkers. Two main documents the Founding Fathers started relied on were "Two Treatises" by John Locke and "Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes. When the Founding Fathers were writing the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution, they needed starting point to base their government off of. As they were reading these documents, it became more and more obvious to be a successful independent Country they would need to create a strong government that would not only control everything but give rights to the people and let the governed have a big voice in how the government runs.... • 11. Who Is Thomas Jefferson A Good President Thomas Jefferson is one of the most important Presidents involved with the founding of America. His contributions are described in America's Third President by Sandra Jacobson. He served over 50 years in the New American Union. He held positions such as a Governor and as President. Everything that Thomas Jefferson did undoubtedly made him the strongest President out of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Thomas Jefferson started his political journey by serving in the Continental Congress in 1775. One year after, he single handedly drafted the Declaration of Independence, a document that reflects the values of American government using his philosophical thinking. Throughout his presidency, George Washington developed the country further than any president who would follow did. Washington was able to defend the homeland and support the United State's foreign relations through his passing of the Neutrality Proclamation, Jay's Treaty, and the Treaty of Tripoli. Many historians would argue thatThomas Jefferson made strides in advancing the nation much further through his accomplishment of acquiring the Louisiana Territory. Although neither president perfectly accomplished all goals they set out to complete, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson single–handedly accomplished, shaped, and developed the nation through treaties and foreign relations far more than any other pair of presidents during their terms as president. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson developed many treaties during their terms as president, but each had one treaty that made them stand out from other presidents to make them superior Chief Diplomats. The purpose of the document was to announce the colonies separation from England. Declaration of Independence is infused with the enlightenment ideals of liberty and equality. This manifesto was a cry for freedom from the tyranny of the King and signaled a new era in world government. One where the people ruled, rather than Kings and Queens. Instead of accepting the award, Lear decided to boycott the Kennedy Center ceremony in December at the White House to protest Donald Trump presidency. Norman Lear has embodied the role as an agent of change because throughout his life, he has been breaking societal norms and discussing issues in society that people are afraid to talk about. Specifically, in 1971, a groundbreaking Americantelevision sitcom broke through societal boundaries and transformed the way that the American audience viewed television. It dealt with contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which allowed blue–collar workers to learn about their current everyday issues and concerns. Therefore, from declining his Kennedy Center Award because of his dislike for the President to breaking the taboos of television in the 1970s, Norman Lear has remained a visible changemaker in our society. • 38. George Washington, John Adams, And Thomas Jefferson George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Not only is this a list of US Presidents but it is also a list of three of the most well –known Founding Fathers. Yes, they have their reasons to be because each one of them have numerous achievements and have accomplished many things that others have not. But one Founding Father often over looked, and not just because he stands five feet four inches tall, is James Madison. With all due respect, James Madison has accomplishments that stand just as well against the test of time. James Madison to me is one of the most important Founding Fathers. Please allow me to explain why I chose Mr. James Madison, the background and upbringing of him, some of his most notable contributions to the Unites States and why those contributions are still important today. The reason I chose James Madison over the rest of the Founding Fathers is because I believe he isn't as well–known as he should be and with that being said, would like to inform you about him. Madison has accomplished many great things in his life that have had an effect on the United States as we know it today. Undoubtedly the biggest contribution that Madison made to the United States of America was the he was the author of the draft that was used to create the Constitution and without the constitution there really wouldn't be a frame of government. Another reason I chose James Madison is because he fought for religious freedom, believing it was an individual's right from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Character Analysis Of Norman Lear Living by the restrictions that society places upon us, humanity is constrained to follow rules. Television writers were forced to write a certain way and were forced to leave out information that society would deem as improper, rude, and even racist. This show approached its audience in a very blunt and crude manner; it made conflict the center of its comedy. It dealt with contemporary cultural issues in a relatable way, which blue allowed blue–collar workers to learn about their current everyday issues and concerns. Through his show All in the Family, Norman Lear highlighted sensitive topics such as racism, bigotry, and sexual relations to prove that they are still alive in our country; thus, Norman Lear is an agent of change by bringing awareness to social issues. Born in 1922 to a very atypical family, Norman Lear had to become very independent. Norman Lear's father, Herman, was a conman who was arrested when Norman was nine years old. In an interview with PBS broadcast journalist Jeffrey Brown, Norman relives the moments of his dad's arrest, recounting the time when a man came up to him, pat him on his shoulder, and uttered "[Norman] You're the man in the house"(Source). It was at this moment that Lear realized the foolishness of the human condition. He wondered what kind of person would place such a great responsibility on a nine year old child, especially during times of hardship and sadness. What made Norman Lear's childhood even appalling was that he could not rely on his mother for support; everything Norman did was only satisfactory in her eyes. To escape his unsupportive life, Lear enlisted in the military and became a fighter pilot during World War II. After completing 52 combat missions, he headed west in an effort to make a social impact through writing comedy. After impressing his colleagues, he was hired as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
