Bioorthogonal Reaction Lab Report
5. Bioorthogonal Click reactions
Click chemistry has wide applications in biotechnology and chemical biology. For use of such
reactions in the above disciplines of science, such click reactions need to be bioorthogonal. A
bioorthogonal reaction is one which takes place without interfering with native biochemical
processes. These type of reactions take place without interfering with components of the living
system. The term bioorthogonal chemistry was coined by scientist Carolyn Bertozzi in 2003
(Wikipedia)
Bioorthogonal click chemistry can be used to visulaize protein expression, track protein
localization, measure protein activity and identify protein interactions within living systems.(Singh
et al., 2016)
Types of reactions that fit this definition are as follows
5.1 Condensations of Ketones and Aldehydes with Heteroatom bound Amines
Historically, the first bio orthogonal ligations involved ketone aldehyde condensation reactions.
While ketones and aldehydes can form reversible imine adducts with many amines found in
biological systems, this process is thermodynamically unfavourable in water.
This led to the use of hydrazides and aminooxy reagents, often called О± effect amines because the
heteroatom bound amine is much more nucleophilic than simple amines and thus shifts the
equilibrium dramatically to the hydrazone and oxime products, respectively. ( book)
Although ketones and aldehydes are absent from the cell surface and from macromolecules within

Comparing Jackson Pollock And Chuck Close
This essay will compare and contrast the work of Jackson Pollock and Chuck Close, specifically
the Abstract Expressionist Number 1A of 1948 and the photorealist Self Portrait of 1991. I will
explore the similarities in the process of these two artists, despite their end result appearing to be
poles apart. Both artists are and were as obsessed with the process of making art as much as with
the outcome. Close and Pollock both employed highly inventive techniques and cultivated a
signature style that is instantly recognizable. Number 1A is an early realization of Pollock s
distinctive approach to dripping paint directly onto the canvas. This technique quickly became a
statement on the aesthetic and psychological power of large scale abstract painting. At five feet and
eight inches by eight feet and 8 inches it is a massive piece that s... Show more content on

The energy of the painting is overwhelming. It is an intricate web of oil colors with black
enamel. The piece is mainly comprised of black and white, but as one tries to look into the
painting subtle red pink and light blue can be found. The many layers of overlapping webs of
black and white seem to be a sort of veil for whatever lies underneath. Making it challenging to
interpret and look into the piece. No place for the eye to settle and rest. There are no figures
hidden within the drips. No hint of a representational image. At first there is a sense or reckless
abandon and a wild application of paint. After closer examining it is clear Pollock s strokes are
controlled, swift, assured, almost mechanical. You can trace the movements of his arm as the drips
of paint fell from sticks and paint brushes. Ranging from puddles where paint gathered and then
thinned into wisps of

Are Viruses Alive Research Paper

Are Viruses Alive?
Viruses are not usually considered living things because they lack characteristics of living things.
Viruses are biological particles composed of nucleic acid and a protein coat. Viruses are not alive
and should not be considered a living organism. The reasons include that a virus cannot
reproduce; they do not obtain energy, and technically cannot live without a host. Reproduction is
one of the biggest essentials of life. Also if an organism cant obtain or make energy it also is
classified as non living. If a virus has no host then it has no ability to reproduce or to live.
Furthermore a virus should not be considered a living organism because it lacks these traits. A virus
is neither an autotroph nor heterotroph. An autotroph makes its energy by producing food typically
seen in plants. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without reproduction a species would become extinct. There are two types of ways to
reproduce. Sexual reproduction is when two parent organisms come together and combine
genetic information to give birth to an offspring. Examples of sexual reproductions include
human beings, animals, and insects. Asexual reproduction is when an organism can reproduce
with only one parent such as starfish and bacterium. Viruses can multiply but they cannot do so
on their own. Viruses because viruses are not cells, they can replicate only by invading a host
cell and using the enzymes and organelles of the host cell to duplicate. Replication can occur by
either the lytic or lysogenic cycle. Viruses are part of an extraordinary life cycle. If a virus infects a
cell for a long period of time they are in a lysogenic cycle. During a Lytic cycle, the viral genome
is released into the host cell and replication of the virus follows immediately. A virus does not
contain the right cell parts to reproduce which causes a virus to go and infect a cell to

The Organizational Culture Of The Beef Industry
1.Introduction When the Beef industry took a hit about ten years ago, one company who was able
to stabilize itself in the rocky market was KBJ Beef Processing Equipment. The question now that
they have successfully implemented a new system into stabilizing their business, is how do they
begin to thrive in it? Currently, the system they have implemented is much more effective than the
prior. One key to the new system was the idea of reduced roles. This was key strategy because it
allowed the company to consolidate and focus on themselves rather than worry about the market.
Instead of panicking, they looked inward to discover the key to surviving in a sinking market.
2.What are the New Ideas The organizational culture within the company... Show more content on

This makes sure that the people in command are not only reliable, but if they are struggling to
meet the deadlines and goals of the company, they can easily be replaced by a younger more
incentivized employee. This kind of revolving door of productivity allows the workers to
understand how the company is performing and how each of their jobs is benefiting the
company. This kind of high employee efficiency mixed with happy workers produces an
outcome that will save KBJ Beef Processing Equipment from the seemingly inevitable downfall
of the beef market. 3.Comparisons The main reason Suede implemented this structure was
because the efficiency of the company was not where it needed to be in order to survive the
tough times. When information or tasks were sent down the chain of command, it was usually
too late or often not even deemed worth solving. Suede on the other hand wants to create a
system where every small problem, no matter how small, is solved so the company can continue
to operate on as high of a level as possible. He was also able to turn the mentality of the company
completely around. Placing the responsibilities of the employees completely on their own
shoulders was the best thing to happen to KBJ Beef Processing Equipment. This way when an
employee falters, the only person they can blame is themselves. This creates almost a military
sense of teamwork. When everyone takes care of themselves and

Indonesia Globalization
Intro: Indonesia is the sixteenth largest economy, the largest economy in the South east Asian
economic region with the world s fourth largest population (263 million in 2017). It is an
emerging economy that has increased its international integration, trade liberalisation and diverted
from policies of import substitution towards export led development. Indonesia is a member of
the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and has been an active founding member of the World
Trade Organisation (WTO). The impact of globalisation has benefited Indonesia as quality of life
indicators and economic developments have improved but it also presents the challenge of
improving regulations, building more competitive industries, increasing investment into education
and infrastructure to remain competitive. Consequently, Indonesia has introduced numerous
strategies to promote economic growth and development. Body 1 (Impact of Globalisation
policies on trade) Globalisation as a catalyst for increased trade has led to Indonesia adopting
policies targeting economic growth and development. Indonesia represents 0.8% of global trade
value which has grown 240 times larger in 2016 compared to 1967. Globalisation has increased
international demand for Indonesian goods and services as their top trade partners are China,
Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. As a result, Indonesia has joined the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Free Trade Area (AFTA agreement) in 1992 to reduce

Essay Present Day Macroeconomy
After nearly two years of sluggish economic growth, the pace of economic expansion has finally
began to accelerate. Today the U.S. economy is strong and getting stronger. After experiencing a
series of significant shocks during the previous years recession, dot com collapse and stock market
meltdown, terrorist attacks, and corporate wrongdoing, the American economy has managed to
remain optimistic. Over the past three quarters, real GDP has grown at the fastest pace in nearly
twenty years. Job creation is moving into full gear. The economy has posted steady job gains for
each of the last ten months creating more than 1.5 million new jobs since August. Inflationremains
low by historical standards, with the CPI (Consumer Price... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One explanation for this deceleration is due in part to the increased number of imports the United
States had during the second quarter.
To comprehend GDP as an indicator of economic activity, we must fully understand each of its
four sub categories. Consumption is the spending by households on goods and services, with the
exception of purchases of new housing. Personal consumption expenditures are broken down into
durable goods, nondurable goods, and services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that personal
consumer expenditures have been increasing every quarter from August of 2003 to August of 2004
with a gradual deceleration. The percent change from August 2003 to August 2004 on all item
expenditures is 2.1%. The majority of these expenditures are found in services. According to The
Heritage Foundation, Policy Research and Analysis, the workforce is transitioning. Already over
80 percent of United States workers are in the service industry, mostly with high skills and pay.
Manufacturing jobs have declined from 17 million in the late 1990s to 14.4 million jobs today.
Knowing that our economy is putting continual emphasis on service business, it easy to understand
why this area of the economy is where most of Americans money is spent. Nondurable goods follow
close behind; as they seem to contain the necessities and fundamental expenditures every household
endures. These include food,

Flood Assessment
PURPOSE
The purpose of this report is to geologically evaluate the potential hazards for flooding in Hazard
City. This report will include a detailed historic and extrapolated Stream Gauge Data Worksheet, as
well as a graph of the Discharge Frequency Curve expected on Clearwater River. The report will
provide Hazard city with my scientific analysis, conclusions, and provide recommendations
concerning potential flood damages.
METHOLODOGY
The methodology used was to utilize the Recurrence Interval formula (R) = (N+1)/M, to determine
the recurrence interval and magnitude of historical floods provided on the Stream Gauge Data of
Peak Flood Discharges on Clearwater River in Hazard City. Also, I reviewed the flood insurance
map to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another reason for this scientific assumption is that the Downtown area, which is inundated with
impervious covered surfaces, will produce runoff, especially in the event of a flash flood, and will
meet in this same area along Clearwater River near Ralston (Keller, 2008, p. 269).
Information that was used to develop my conclusions were relative to the history of Clearwater
River such as the average normal discharge of 40,000cfs, the fact that the river can accommodate
55,000cfs before flooding will occur, and that with every increase of 2600cfs the river rises one
foot. For example, this information helped to determine that four of the thirteen noted Peak
Flood Discharges listed on the worksheet were not at flood stage as the river is able to
accommodate discharges less than 55,000cfs. However, nine of the thirteen Peak Flood
Discharges listed on the worksheet were at flood stage or drastically above; with the maximum
rise of 17.77 feet above and a discharge rate of 101,200cfs. The average discharge rate of the top
three noted floods per information on the Stream Gauge Data of Peak Flow Discharges is
93,613cfs, which is resourceful later in determining the extrapolated 75 year flood.
CITY COUNCIL CONCERNS
1. What is the recurrence interval of floods in Hazard City?
The average recurrence interval of floods in Hazard City is 1 in 7.14 years; with an average flood
discharge rate of 78,885cfs and a magnitude of 7. The typical flood in Hazard City

How E. Coli Affects The Digestive System
E. coli was first discovered by Theodor Escherich in 1885 after identifying it from the feces of a

E.coli affects and attacks the digestive system. The digestive system is where the body takes each
mouthful of food and turns it into a mushy paste, this paste helps maintain the body s homeostasis. (

The Medieval And Renaissance Era
Things will inevitably change, no doubt that s a fact. Some people don t like change, but change is
something that is always going to happen no matter what; either for better or worse. For instance,
there are things that can change shortly from this very moment. If things can change in a very short
time, how much more in hundreds of years. For the purpose of this paper, we re going to address
the fundamental changes in the Medieval and Renaissanceera over those hundreds of years,
especially concerning architecture, in which brought us to our present. The Medieval and

On the other hand, after hundreds of years, our dear ancestors, whom I m so thankful for,
stumbled upon this idea that practicality of life in earth is supposed to be our priority instead of
worrying so much about this vague idea of the afterlife. They basically started the idea of YOLO
(You Only Live Once). Not only that, they also became obsessed with science and reasoning,
another thing I m oh so thankful for. They were also infatuated with simple geometry, precise
symmetry, and the system of proportion The Golden Mean, just like in ancient Romans. They badly
wanted to revive the ancient Roman architecture that they stuck with one specific style unlike the
Medieval period. In addition, since the religious dogma is not the main law of land anymore,
structures built during the Renaissance period were able to flexibly embody these characteristics
without further problems. Many structures were built for wealthy families, such as the Medicis, to
show off their influence. As a result, the aesthetics of the buildings became the priority instead. The
structure of the building was still very important, but they re now less visible as the architects then

Washington Grass Inn Dance Analysis
AOII Formal 2018 at Washington Grass Inn
1.What style of dance did you see or do? What specific movements did you see or do that would
indicate that it was this specific style or genre?
At this formal event, I experienced both individual and partner dancing. I would describe this style
to be a mix of hip hop and swing dancing. The dance movements involved fluid arm waving and
rhythmic leg stepping. There was no set choreography so our movements were limitless. These
movements reminded me of hip hop, because there were moments of jacking and lots of hip
movements. Additionally, there were movements that reminded me of swing dancing because of
the partner spinning, dipping, and swaying.

Examples Of Social Outcasts In To Kill A Mockingbird
Prejudice and social expectations are the main cause of social outcasts and unfair treatment. In the
novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, many examples of unfair treatment and social
outcasts are used. Constantly, themes of prejudice and social expectations are accurately displayed
by creating outcasts in society and relying on pre judgments to judge behavior. She also accurately
displays the fact that not all people in the South during that time were prejudiced.
Social expectations are a strong aspect of the town of Maycomb in To Kill a Mockingbird. Many
outcasts are created using these expectations. In the story, the Radley s are viewed as a very odd

One example is the immediate arrest of Tom Robinson, an African American man who was
accused of raping a white woman. When Robinson was arrested the sheriff, Heck Tate, showed
no mercy and did not second guess himself. Prejudice is showed in this moment because
Robinson was not questioned at all when he was arrested, but if he had been white the demeanor
would change. To further prove that it would have a different outcome if Tom Robinson was
white, Lee incorporates a quote that recalls the time when Tate refuses to put a white man behind
bars. The sheriff hadn t the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes... (Lee 14). Since the Sheriff
hadn t put a white man who needed jail time in jail because he would be surrounded by those of
the opposite race, it shows a prejudice the town had against African Americans. This is because it
took no time at all to arrest Robinson, but when I came down to a man of his own race, it
became emotional and socially incorrect. Another example of prejudice is when the town pre
judges Mr. Dolphus Raymond as an evil man. As Mr. Dolphus Raymond was an evil man I
accepted his invitation reluctantly... (Lee 267). Mr. Dolphus Raymond is a man who was
supposed to get married to a white woman, but was also having sexual affairs with a black
woman. When the bride to be found this out she killed herself and ever since he was seen with a

Justice In Plato s The Republic
In his Socratic dialogue The Republic, Plato s primary concern is to define and defend the concept
of justice. Socrates, his mentor, serves as narrator and Plato s interpreter in the dialogue. He
discusses the meaning of justice and how one can achieve it, and ultimately reach happiness. The
definition given to justice, although not completely solidified, is that being just means doing what
one is best suited for and focusing on one s own behavior and life. His strategy is to present the
idea of a utopian just city state, and derive the notion of individual justice from that, suggesting that
his definition of it will apply to both large political structures and single human beings. The
hypothetical city state is ruled by Philosopher Kings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He claims that the Philosopher King must be intelligent, trustworthy, willing to live a life free
of luxuries, and most importantly, a lover of the truth. However, these characteristics are rarely
manifested, so they must be awakened through education and the study of the Good. The
Allegory of the Cave illustrates this awakening and the ultimate achievement of justice, helping
us understand the philosopher s role in society as king. In the parable, a group of people is
described as prisoners inside a deep cave. They have been chained to the walls since childhood,
and are unable to move, only seeing what is in front of them. The only source of light they have
inside the cave is from a fire that projects shadows of objects manipulated by another group of
people; these shadows are everything they believe to be the reality. A prisoner is freed and
forced to look at the fire and the artifacts. Pain and confusion take over for a short period, for that
the direct exposure to the light is arduous, but the prisoner slowly realizes and accepts that what
he sees now is more real than the shadows he saw before, which were only flawed copies. Next,
the prisoner is dragged out of the cave, and again is dazzled by the light of the outside world. First,
he can only look at the shadows, then at reflections, and eventually

Chaos In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
Outsiders Connection In the book, The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton ingrains that social
class causes chaos. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him
across the face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to run away. The plan falls
through and the two end up at the park face to face with the Socs the same Socs that jumped
Johnny. In a point to save Ponyboy from death Johnny kills Bob, one of the main Socs of the
group. While Ponyboy stares at Bob, he thinks , Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the
moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the
blue white cement (56). In this passage, S.E Hinton supports the idea that social class causes
chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are in a lower social class than the Socs, the Socs think that
they can take advantage of the greasers by jumping them and harming them. Johnny and Pony
have been Jumped before and this time when someone s life is on the line it can cause a bad chain
of events starting with Johnny killing Bob, the Soc. Once again, S.E Hinton establishes that social
class causes chaos in one s life. Johnny and Pony come home after... Show more content on

bad. So, when Johnny and Ponyboy commit a heroic act everyone is stunned because they did not
think that hoods could do good. That is is what lead them to the conclusion that Johnny and

Coworker Narrative
I recently got a new job and my coworkers were very nice and everything was good up until this
day. The day we went under attack. My work was not in the city. It was more out where no one
lived and not many people went.It was a large building with about 20 stories. I had a cubicle that
was very tiny but every that worked there had one. I was very close with my boss. His name was
Tom. I had a few other friends there like Mike, Karen, and Brooke.
My day was so normal, I woke up and then went to work. I also had a feeling in my gut that
something was going to happen today. I remember walking into my little cubicle and all of my

Essay about Role of Women in Things Fall Apart, by Chinua...
The role of women in society has grown and changed tremendously with the development of the
world. Within the American culture, women s rights have expanded to the extent of being able to
vote for who runs our country or even possibly being the person that does run our country. Although
the American culture has somewhat promoted the growth of a woman s role in society, does not
mean women receive the same respect in other cultures around world. For example, in Africa
women are viewed lower on the totem pole of importance even though without them the village
would fall apart. Chinua Achebeis an author that was born and raised in a village of Nigeria. From

The way in which the women of the Igbo village are presented, by Achebe, make it seem as if
they serve very little purpose to the society. The main character, Okonkwo, is infatuated with
making sure he does not turn out to be like his father. By living in a village where manliness was
crucial and weakness was not, Okonkwo viewed his father as being a weak and cowardly mean
because he could barely support his family. To make sure he did not become an adult that
resembled his father, he developed the characteristics of being brave, wealthy and even violent.
Since he acquired these traits, it gave him a sense of superiority over his wives and the other
women of the village. Perhaps because of Okonkwo s behavior, the women of the village are
treated with less respect. It is portrayed by Achebe that the women of the Igbo village only
purpose is looking after the children and helping their husbands when or if it is needed.
Although the women of the Igbo village are described as being insignificant, the women are the
people that fill in the gaps in the society. For example, the women are the ones that cook, clean,
take care of everyone, help harvest and grow food, as well as all the other everyday tasks that are
easily overlooked. Achebe mentions specific characters for a reason or in this case he leaves out a
specific character. Okonkwo s mother is mentioned merely once in Achebe s novel, Things Fall

My Symbol Of Life
Life is full of challenges and struggles, but that doesn t mean we succumb to them. You may
encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter
defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.
(Maya Angelou) When asked who I would consider a symbol of everything I want the decision
wasn t hard to make. My mother, Jan Birdsong, is my symbol because she has displayed self
confidence, ethics, and perseverance, which is all I dream to be. First and Foremost, Self
confidence is defined by Merriam Webster as having confidence in oneself and in one s powers
and abilities. My mother has built her self confidence through learning to like herself, cultivating a
positive attitude, setting personal goals, and taking risks to achieve them. Maintaining a positive
support system through family and friends has helped my mother keep her perspective in line with
her goals. Furthermore, she chooses to surround herself with well intended people who weigh in
providing constructive opinions. Her sense of pride represents independent, self reflection and
fulfillment of achievements. Pride means possessing personal standards that translate facets of
moral character such as self respect, honor, and dignity. Her pride demonstrates how she has
pushed to accomplish her goals and her pride will not accept anything less. The ability to
accomplish something in the face of opposition is considered courageous.

Bible 104 Worldview Essay
The book of Judges introduces us to the long years of Israel s struggle to maintain control of the
Promised Land and serves as the transition from the conquest to the kingdom. It deals with events
following Joshua s death (c. 1380 BC)
The main body of the story revolves around six cycles of apostasy, repentance, and deliverance. God
intervenes time and again to rescue the struggling Israelites from military oppression, spiritual
depression, and ethnic annihilation.
The book of Judges derives its title from the Latin Liber Judicum, but the Hebrew title is
shophetim. The verbal form ( to judge ) describes the activity of the various deliverers whom God
used despite their personal challenges, oddities, or inadequacies

They introduce a series of contrasts between good and evil judges, plus faithful and unfaithful
kings. As 1 Samuel opens, the era of the judges is still in the forefront, but it is fading fast. The
leadership of Israel rests on the undisciplined and elderly Eli, the high priest of the tabernacle at
Shiloh and one of the last of the minor judges (1 Sam 4:18). Throughout the early chapters of 1
Samuel, the author draws a sharp contrast between Eli and his ungodly sons and the godly prophet
Samuel. By the middle of the book (1 Samuel 15 16), the same kind of contrast is drawn between
Saul and David.
In 2 Samuel the narrative shifts to the reign of David as he rises above Saul s son Ish bosheth to
become the king, first of Judah and then of all the tribes of Israel (5:1 4). The book records
David s wars of conquest including the capture of Jerusalem and the relocation of the ark of the
covenant to the City of David (6:1 19). But the author also records David s failures: his adultery
with Bathsheba (11:1 26), Absalom s rebellion (15:1 18:30), Sheba s revolt (20:1 26), and the
disastrous census (24:1 25). Like all the prophetic writers, the author presents a portrait of his
historical figures from the perspective of their faithfulness to God s covenant.

The Importance Of Interdependence In The Bean Trees
Independence is a common societal value in American society. Many feel the need to be able to
create a great life all on their own. The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, however, contrasts
independence and dependence with interdependence, two or more people relying on each other.
Kingsolver values interdependence the most as shown through her characters Taylor, Turtle, and
Lou Ann; these characters all try for independence or dependence before realizing that
interdependence is the right balance of the two. Complete dependence does not work for Lou Ann,
who struggles to know who she is without her husband, or Turtle, who cannot express herself after
becoming an orphan. At the beginning of the novel, Lou Ann says that she and her husband, Angel,

Here, Kingsolver shows that independence is imperfect because if you make a mistake there is
no one there to help you back up. In the end, Kingsolver proves interdependence is the best way
to survive by showing Taylor, Lou Ann, and Turtle as a family; she also uses rhizobia as a
symbol for interdependence at work. When Taylor and Lou Ann first meet, they instantly find a
connection. Taylor helps Lou Ann to become more confident by encouraging her to speak her
mind about how the door to the strip club makes her uncomfortable. Also, she tells Lou Ann to
stop putting herself down and thinking she is not as smart as Taylor or that Angel left because
she got drunk once. In return, Lou Ann helps Taylor by taking care of Turtle and supporting
Taylor as she learns how to be a good mother. Turtle, as a result of feeling loved and safe within
her new family, begins to speak and laugh. In return, Turtle gives Taylor a sense of purpose. The
results of this interdependence are all positive. Lou Ann becomes confident enough to get a job
she loves at a salsa factory, Taylor decides she wants to adopt Turtle, and Turtle is able to put her
past behind her by getting closure with how her mother died in

Project Management Strategy
Introduction Project Management is all about managing your tasks and goals with the best use of
available resources within a fixed frame of time. To achieve the fixed time, the project manager
would need the proper coordination of all possible inputs required to carry out the task successfully.
One of such inputs is the project managementmaturity model which allows for improvement of
project management processes and systems (Crawford, 2006). Project management maturity is the
progressive development of an enterprise wide project management approach, methodology,
strategy, and decision making process. The appropriate level of maturity will vary for each

Such positioning is possible with strategic management because this process improves preparedness
for unexpected internal or competitive demands. Therefore, an organizational strategy is an all
encompassing approach for formulating, implementing and evaluating managerial decisions in a
way that permits the business to reach its objectives. For an organizational strategy to be successful,
however, the organization should:
Clearly see the need for change
Be firmly committed to the idea of changing the business planning process
Assure that the strategic management process has credibility with everyone involved
Make sure that final plans are realistic and reflect actual resources and capabilities
Train all participants in the procedures essential to the strategic management process
Develop concise and well organized plans One of such strategy is the implementation of Six
Sigma methodology in the organization. Six Sigma is a methodology that combines the gradual
and continuous improvement with radical redesign. The process of Six Sigma begins by
measuring the statistical variability within a process. This means that the causes of error can only
be determined if you understand the critical requirement of either the internal or external customer.
Six Sigma processes are designed to reduce process variability. Six Sigma helps the organization to

A comparision of the degree of Racism in To Kill A...
From Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela and many more in between, people have tried to
encourage the condemnation of prejudice. Harper Lee and Mildred D. Taylor have tried to do this
using the medium of the novel. Many people would feel that the books could be set in the 19th
century due to the significance of the prejudice and racism involved. They are actually set in the
1930s and, whilst these childhood accounts were written in the second half of the 20th century, the
prejudice still existed at the time of writing and still occurs in inexcusable amounts today.
Throughout both books, there are many instances where characters endure or cause suffering due to
their unreasonable prejudice. The authors use some similar and some differing... Show more content

This is exactly what happened to Cassie, and is completely unjustifiable. The way the author
enables you to feel empathy for Cassie is what condemns prejudice.
More of this open prejudice appears in Mr. Barnett s shop, as he plainly ignores the black children
in favour of a white woman, who had a lot more shopping than the black children:
Mr Barnett walked to another counter and began filling the order, but before he finished a white
woman called, Mr. Barnett, you waiting on anybody just now? Mr. Barnett turned around, Just

The woman handed him a list twice as long as T.J. s and the storekeeper, without a word of

After Mr. Barnett had displayed this blatant show of prejudice, Cassie went on to ask him why he
wasn t helping them. Mr. Barnett became exceptionally angry because he thought that Cassie was
acting outrageously just by talking back to him, even though she spoke very politely. This is partly
because he has no respect for black people in general but also because he just cannot believe that a
young black girl would have the moral courage to act differently to the norm. Even though she acts
in a manner that we could easily accept by today s standards, Mr. Barnett thinks that she is
conceited and a menace. This condemns prejudice because the reader cannot find any genuine

How Does Paton Use Metaphors In Cry The Beloved Country
In 1948, apartheid was enacted by the all white national party in South Africa. The purpose was to

Their development of moralitycan create or mend a division in society. Possessing a strong moral

Aviation had an enormous impact on World War 2 (WW2) and the war had a great impact on
Aviation. The cost of aviation during WW2 was staggering. Before the war started America had
about 300 air transport aircraft. During WW2 there were approximately 276,000 air planes

Approximately 43,000 of them were lost overseas (Engel, 2011). After the war American had to

times and various forms throughout the course of our lives, and in order to live serenely we

However this conflict America encounter was complex it brought out both the positive values
uniting individuals together and the cruellest and inhuman responses. Resulting in America leading
an international effort to oust the Talibanregime in Afghanistan and destroy Osama bin Laden s
terrorist network. With the encountering of conflict both courage and cowardice can be seen in
people.
That faced with inner conflict the individual has a choice between what is the best and the worst
decision in that conflict. Encountering conflict is often portrayed with negative experience by
humans, however it is through these experiences in which people discover inner strength that they
never knew they possessed, both physically and mentally. Through the discovery of these traits,
many people can overcome conflict and create workable solutions to difficult problems, or even
make appropriate compromises. A monumental example of this was Rosa Parks the mother of the
freedom movement , an African American activist in the time of the black and white segregation,
refused to give up her seat in the coloured section of the bus to a white passenger, after the white
section was filled. This portray of inner strength sparked the movement of the abolishment of the
segregation, empathising an individuals character is found in encountering conflict.

How Did Andrew Carnegie Contribute To Power
Andrew Carnegie is the perfect example of a rags to riches story. Mr. Carnegie started out as an
extremely poor immigrant boy from Scotland. He slowly worked his way up in the world, picking
up random jobs and investing in different companies. Eventually, he took advantage of
advancement in the steel industry and virtually created a monopoly. This made Andrew Carnegiean
extremely wealthy man. His fortunes exceeded what would be 14 trillion dollars in todays
currency (Graybar). Because of Andrew Carnegie s extreme wealth, he was a very powerful
person who used his power to benefit mankind. Andrew Carnegie used the power he had in a
very positive way. Carnegie often donated money to different causes. For example, one of his
goals from the time he was a young man was to help in the accomplishment of world peace. So,
after he sold his steelcompany for $480 million (or in today s dollars, about 14 trillion dollars), he
started attempting to complete his goal. Between the years of 1903 and 1914, Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie created thousands of libraries, hundreds of trust funds, many foundations that
helped people, and he even released books under his name (Andrew Carnegie. Bloomsbury). Of
course he was well known for his vast wealth from his steel company, but he was also recognized
for his philanthropy. One specific person that recognized the power that Carnegie had was J.P.
Morgan. Morgan was a banker who knew how much power Carnegie had gained from his steel
company. Morgan, along with a few other investors, bought Andrew Carnegies Company for
$480 million dollars, or over 12 trillion dollars in today s currency (Tweedale). Morgan realized
that Carnegie s Company was the best in the steel industry. He realized how much power Carnegie
had over everyone, especially the people that were in the steel industry. So, Morgan bought

Boeing vs Airbus
The commercial airplane manufacturing industry is dominated by two large players, Boeing and
Airbus. They operate in a very competitive environment and the strategies of one strongly impact
the business of the other.
For almost 40 years, the Boeing 747 or Jumbo Jet, the largest airplane in the world, has enjoyed a
monopoly and has brought in large profits for Boeing. Roughly 10 years ago, Airbus decided to look
into to the possibility of manufacturing an even larger and more efficient plane.
Your assignment is to write up a case study on Airbus decision to product what is now called the
Airbus 380. In your study include the international competitive environment, the need (or lack of)
for a super Jumbo, and the implications on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also has a lower cabin noise and the effects of jetlag than the Boeing 747.
At 555 passengers, the A380 s seating capacity represents a 35% increase over the 747 400 in a
standard three class configuration, along with a 50% larger cabin volume producing more space
per passenger. If, however, the plane is ordered in an all economy class configuration, it can hold
up to 853 passengers; its maximum certified carrying capacity.
Airport compatibility
The A380 was designed to fit within an 80 x 80 m airport gate[33], and can land or take off on
any runway that can take a Boeing 747. However, airports used by the A380 in commercial
service may need infrastructure modifications. Its large wingspan can require some taxiway and
apron reconfigurations, to maintain safe separation margins when two of the aircraft pass each
other. Taxiway shoulders may be required to be paved to reduce the likelihood of foreign object
damage caused to (or by) the outboard engines, which overhang more than 25 m (80 ft) from the
centre line of the aircraft. Any taxiway or runway bridge must be capable of supporting the A380
s maximum weight. The terminal gate must be sized such that the A380 s wings do not block
adjacent gates, and may also provide multiple jetway bridges for simultaneous boarding on both
decks. Service vehicles with lifts capable of reaching the upper deck must be obtained, as well as
tractors capable of

Risk Of Osteoporosis
During childhood, bones grow and repair very quickly, but this process gets slower as you age.
Bones stop growing in length between the ages of 16 and 18, but continue to increase in density
until you re in your late 20s.
You gradually start to lose bone density from about 35 years of age. Women normally lose bone
rapidly in the first few years.
Osteoporosis can affect both men and women. It s more common in elderly people, but it can also
affect younger people after the menopause.
Women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men because the hormone changes that
occur in the menopause directly affects bone density. The female hormone estrogen is critical for
healthy bones. After the menopause estrogen levels fall, it can lead ... Show more content on

Early in the course of the disease, osteoporosis may cause no symptoms. Later, it some signals
may include dull pain in the bones or muscles, particularly low back pain or neck pain.
Later in the course of the disease, sharp pains may come on suddenly. The pain may not radiate but
it may be made worse by activity that puts weight on the area. It sometimes is accompanied by
tenderness, and generally begins to subside in one week. Pain may linger more than three months.
In older people, a fractured bone can be very serious and result in long term disability for that
person. For example, a hip fracture may lead to long term mobility problems. Sometimes a cough
or sneeze can cause a rib fracture or the partial collapse of one of the bones of the spine.
Although a fracture is the first sign of osteoporosis, some older people develop the characteristic
of bending forward. It happens when the bones in the spine have fractured, making it difficult to
support the weight of the body. A loss of height happens and this posture is known as a dowager s

The Term Loanrepresents 85% of the capital structure. A Project backed by a long term EPA with a
strong investment grade off taker somewhat mitigate the risk.
The Term Loan amortization over the initial tenor of the loan is seven years and the expected
balloon at the end of the initial term (2025) is about C$176.5 million or US$132.7 million, hence
introducing the refinancing risk.
The remaining EPA term of 23 years at the end of the initial tenor of the Term Loan makes the
refinancing of the balloon payment likely. The Analyst notes that if no refinancing is available,
the balloon payment at the end of the initial term of the loan will be fully repaid two years prior
to the EPA expiry in 2048, under the conservative P99 scenario, and solely based on contracted
cash flows.
The risk designation of Neutral/Standard reflects the EPA tail supporting refinancing at the end of
the Term Loan tenor in 2025.

Underwater Cemetery Research Paper
Underwater Cemetery How new technologies have helped undersea treasure hunters disturb long
forgotten shipwrecks According to the United Nations more than three million shipwrecks can be
found on the ocean floor. These ships contain trillion dollars worth of artifacts, however we
should not forget that an incalculable number of people lost their lives on those ships, making
them massive underwater cemeteries. All those deaths left behind them mourning family
members who demand that wrecks be left as undisturbed graves. An experienced diver once
claimed that hunting through a shipwreck was like walking through a haunted house. You can
sense the presence of those who sank with the ship and have nothing to identify their lost
remains. This is why the shipwreck are primarily their graveyard and not a place for treasure
hunts. They should be left in peace. Ships like the Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes which sank
near the coast of Tampa bay, killing over 200 crews members, should be protected by some
regulation. For the respect of those who died serving their country, even if the ship contains half a
billion dollars worth of sunken treasure.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the rightful owner of those objects. When you dive, the underwater pressure squeezes your internal

risk when they fetch the treasures. This is not an act of bravery but one blinded a quest for money

Analysis Of The Poem
The Deformity
The bright lights and unknown voices travelled around me. It surly wasn t the first time I had
experienced this, but it was the first time I could actually recognize what was going on. They tried
to ease my nervousness with their soothing words, but being so anxious nothing could soothe me.
It all started at birth. My deformity was nothing new to the medical world, but in my parent s eyes
it was something out of fiction. My feet were turned in like hockey sticks. In medical jargon it is
noted as club foot which is a perfect description. But of course my parents being who they are
dismissed my quark and accepted me and fell in love. This could be said about the rest of my
family too, but when they finally were able to conceive what was actually occurring they became
weary and quite sad, especially my grandfather. When he first picked me up he took me to the
corner seat of the hospital room and cried. But, his fear and sadness did come with love and
acceptance.
At the age of one I received my first surgery. Being June, the temperature was excruciating which
only made things worse for my casts and me. The sweat would drip down my legs and into the
crevasses where I could not reach. The moisture would sit in the cloth for days and my wounds
would itch tremendously. After the removal of the casts learning to walk was difficult, but being a
child it came quickly.
In elementary school the problem reoccurred and my ligaments began to shorten again. This was

Residential Schools
Case Study: Residential Schools
Examining the residential school system in Canada between the 1870s and 1996 exposes
numerous human rights and civil liberties violations of individuals by the government. This case
study involves both de jure discrimination and de facto discrimination experienced by Aboriginals
based on their culture. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms specifically protects
Aboriginal rights under section 25 and section 15 declares that, Every individual is equal before
and under the law (Sharpe Roach, 2009, p. 307). Human rights and civil liberties of Aboriginal
children and parents were ignored and violated by residential schools which were fuelled by

257). The programs were put in place as a method of imposing norms on a younger generation that
had been deemed fit for transformation (Ibid). This policy resulted in a vulnerable group being
removed from their homes and placed into an environment plagued with physical, sexual,
emotional, and spiritual abuse. Isolation from all aspects of one s culture was degrading, isolating,
and discouraging.
The implementation of residential schools can be considered an action taken with societies best
interests in mind. The policy initially appeared to be free from de jure discrimination since the
purpose was to empower the aboriginal population and give them the tools they needed to
succeed in a modern society. The abuse suffered by the students did not appear to be an
intentional result of the assimilation policy adopted by the government. Policy makers had a
desire to create a generation of aboriginals accustomed to the ways of civilized life (Llewellyn,
2002, p. 257). Unfortunately the policy had flaws and experiences in residential schools have
resulted in numerous accounts of injuries sustained and psychological damage (Akhtar, 2010, p.
263). The fact that discrimination actively occurred to this group of people is an example of de facto
discrimination.
Church Organizations The Catholic Church and United Church of Canada are responsible for
discriminating aboriginal peoples

Analysis of Anselm s Ontological Argument and the Argument...
Roxx Alvarado
Professor Aaron Wilson
PHI2010
8 September 2011
Analysis to Anselm s Ontological Argument and the Argument from Evil The debate of the
existence of God had been active since before the first philosopher has pondered the question.
Anselm s Ontological Argument was introduced during the 11th century and had stood deductively
valid until the 18th century. Then there are the arguments to aim disprove God, such as the
Argument from Evil. The Ontological argument is an a priori deductive argument. That is, an
argument relating to being, that is independent of prior knowledge of the subject and with a
conclusion you must accept IF one accepts the preceding premises. St. Anselm of Canterbury
presents the Ontological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to the conclusion, if you accept the premises then you accept the existence of the greatest
being possible, God.
This concept of God s existence is also led with the idea that God is a necessary being, a being
that is not dependent of something greater in order to exist. If God relied on another being, like
how a children rely on parents to conceive them, then this being called God is not God because it
would be imperfect. Therefore, there must be another to call God that meets all the requirements
for perfection. One of the first popular objections was created by Gaunilo of Marmoutiers. The
premise and conclusion to Gaunilo s argument is identical to Anselm s argument except with the
replacement of the word God with the Lost island and the word being with island . As simple as
that, though Gaunilo s argument is completely absurd, Gaunilo s reductio ad absurdum also proves
to be as deductively valid as Anselm s argument. However, this Lost Island could in no way exist.
The absurdity and validity of the lost island quickly brought up questions as to how Anselm s
Argument cannot be absurd. Anselm s argument was not proven invalid until Immanuel Kant, a
german philosopher during the 18th century, proposed an objection that would be the decisive blow
to the Ontological argument (Immanuel Kant. Wiki). Kant s

  • 2. Bioorthogonal Reaction Lab Report 5. Bioorthogonal Click reactions Click chemistry has wide applications in biotechnology and chemical biology. For use of such reactions in the above disciplines of science, such click reactions need to be bioorthogonal. A bioorthogonal reaction is one which takes place without interfering with native biochemical processes. These type of reactions take place without interfering with components of the living system. The term bioorthogonal chemistry was coined by scientist Carolyn Bertozzi in 2003 (Wikipedia) Bioorthogonal click chemistry can be used to visulaize protein expression, track protein localization, measure protein activity and identify protein interactions within living systems.(Singh et al., 2016) Types of reactions that fit this definition are as follows 5.1 Condensations of Ketones and Aldehydes with Heteroatom bound Amines Historically, the first bio orthogonal ligations involved ketone aldehyde condensation reactions. While ketones and aldehydes can form reversible imine adducts with many amines found in biological systems, this process is thermodynamically unfavourable in water. This led to the use of hydrazides and aminooxy reagents, often called О± effect amines because the heteroatom bound amine is much more nucleophilic than simple amines and thus shifts the equilibrium dramatically to the hydrazone and oxime products, respectively. ( book) Although ketones and aldehydes are absent from the cell surface and from macromolecules within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing Jackson Pollock And Chuck Close This essay will compare and contrast the work of Jackson Pollock and Chuck Close, specifically the Abstract Expressionist Number 1A of 1948 and the photorealist Self Portrait of 1991. I will explore the similarities in the process of these two artists, despite their end result appearing to be poles apart. Both artists are and were as obsessed with the process of making art as much as with the outcome. Close and Pollock both employed highly inventive techniques and cultivated a signature style that is instantly recognizable. Number 1A is an early realization of Pollock s distinctive approach to dripping paint directly onto the canvas. This technique quickly became a statement on the aesthetic and psychological power of large scale abstract painting. At five feet and eight inches by eight feet and 8 inches it is a massive piece that s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The energy of the painting is overwhelming. It is an intricate web of oil colors with black enamel. The piece is mainly comprised of black and white, but as one tries to look into the painting subtle red pink and light blue can be found. The many layers of overlapping webs of black and white seem to be a sort of veil for whatever lies underneath. Making it challenging to interpret and look into the piece. No place for the eye to settle and rest. There are no figures hidden within the drips. No hint of a representational image. At first there is a sense or reckless abandon and a wild application of paint. After closer examining it is clear Pollock s strokes are controlled, swift, assured, almost mechanical. You can trace the movements of his arm as the drips of paint fell from sticks and paint brushes. Ranging from puddles where paint gathered and then thinned into wisps of ... • 4. Are Viruses Alive Research Paper Luis Lam Biology Honors Mr. Zarate Pd. 7 September 1, 2014 Are Viruses Alive? Viruses are not usually considered living things because they lack characteristics of living things. Viruses are biological particles composed of nucleic acid and a protein coat. Viruses are not alive and should not be considered a living organism. The reasons include that a virus cannot reproduce; they do not obtain energy, and technically cannot live without a host. Reproduction is one of the biggest essentials of life. Also if an organism cant obtain or make energy it also is classified as non living. If a virus has no host then it has no ability to reproduce or to live. Furthermore a virus should not be considered a living organism because it lacks these traits. A virus is neither an autotroph nor heterotroph. An autotroph makes its energy by producing food typically seen in plants. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without reproduction a species would become extinct. There are two types of ways to reproduce. Sexual reproduction is when two parent organisms come together and combine genetic information to give birth to an offspring. Examples of sexual reproductions include human beings, animals, and insects. Asexual reproduction is when an organism can reproduce with only one parent such as starfish and bacterium. Viruses can multiply but they cannot do so on their own. Viruses because viruses are not cells, they can replicate only by invading a host cell and using the enzymes and organelles of the host cell to duplicate. Replication can occur by either the lytic or lysogenic cycle. Viruses are part of an extraordinary life cycle. If a virus infects a cell for a long period of time they are in a lysogenic cycle. During a Lytic cycle, the viral genome is released into the host cell and replication of the virus follows immediately. A virus does not contain the right cell parts to reproduce which causes a virus to go and infect a cell to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Organizational Culture Of The Beef Industry 1.Introduction When the Beef industry took a hit about ten years ago, one company who was able to stabilize itself in the rocky market was KBJ Beef Processing Equipment. The question now that they have successfully implemented a new system into stabilizing their business, is how do they begin to thrive in it? Currently, the system they have implemented is much more effective than the prior. One key to the new system was the idea of reduced roles. This was key strategy because it allowed the company to consolidate and focus on themselves rather than worry about the market. Instead of panicking, they looked inward to discover the key to surviving in a sinking market. 2.What are the New Ideas The organizational culture within the company... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes sure that the people in command are not only reliable, but if they are struggling to meet the deadlines and goals of the company, they can easily be replaced by a younger more incentivized employee. This kind of revolving door of productivity allows the workers to understand how the company is performing and how each of their jobs is benefiting the company. This kind of high employee efficiency mixed with happy workers produces an outcome that will save KBJ Beef Processing Equipment from the seemingly inevitable downfall of the beef market. 3.Comparisons The main reason Suede implemented this structure was because the efficiency of the company was not where it needed to be in order to survive the tough times. When information or tasks were sent down the chain of command, it was usually too late or often not even deemed worth solving. Suede on the other hand wants to create a system where every small problem, no matter how small, is solved so the company can continue to operate on as high of a level as possible. He was also able to turn the mentality of the company completely around. Placing the responsibilities of the employees completely on their own shoulders was the best thing to happen to KBJ Beef Processing Equipment. This way when an employee falters, the only person they can blame is themselves. This creates almost a military sense of teamwork. When everyone takes care of themselves and ... • 7. Indonesia Globalization Intro: Indonesia is the sixteenth largest economy, the largest economy in the South east Asian economic region with the world s fourth largest population (263 million in 2017). It is an emerging economy that has increased its international integration, trade liberalisation and diverted from policies of import substitution towards export led development. Indonesia is a member of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and has been an active founding member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The impact of globalisation has benefited Indonesia as quality of life indicators and economic developments have improved but it also presents the challenge of improving regulations, building more competitive industries, increasing investment into education and infrastructure to remain competitive. Consequently, Indonesia has introduced numerous strategies to promote economic growth and development. Body 1 (Impact of Globalisation policies on trade) Globalisation as a catalyst for increased trade has led to Indonesia adopting policies targeting economic growth and development. Indonesia represents 0.8% of global trade value which has grown 240 times larger in 2016 compared to 1967. Globalisation has increased international demand for Indonesian goods and services as their top trade partners are China, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. As a result, Indonesia has joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Free Trade Area (AFTA agreement) in 1992 to reduce ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today the U.S. economy is strong and getting stronger. Over the past three quarters, real GDP has grown at the fastest pace in nearly twenty years. Job creation is moving into full gear. One explanation for this deceleration is due in part to the increased number of imports the United States had during the second quarter. To comprehend GDP as an indicator of economic activity, we must fully understand each of its four sub categories. Consumption is the spending by households on goods and services, with the exception of purchases of new housing. Personal consumption expenditures are broken down into durable goods, nondurable goods, and services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that personal consumer expenditures have been increasing every quarter from August of 2003 to August of 2004 with a gradual deceleration. The percent change from August 2003 to August 2004 on all item expenditures is 2.1%. The majority of these expenditures are found in services. According to The Heritage Foundation, Policy Research and Analysis, the workforce is transitioning. Already over 80 percent of United States workers are in the service industry, mostly with high skills and pay. Manufacturing jobs have declined from 17 million in the late 1990s to 14.4 million jobs today. Knowing that our economy is putting continual emphasis on service business, it easy to understand why this area of the economy is where most of Americans money is spent. Another reason for this scientific assumption is that the Downtown area, which is inundated with impervious covered surfaces, will produce runoff, especially in the event of a flash flood, and will meet in this same area along Clearwater River near Ralston (Keller, 2008, p. 269). Information that was used to develop my conclusions were relative to the history of Clearwater River such as the average normal discharge of 40,000cfs, the fact that the river can accommodate 55,000cfs before flooding will occur, and that with every increase of 2600cfs the river rises one foot. For example, this information helped to determine that four of the thirteen noted Peak Flood Discharges listed on the worksheet were not at flood stage as the river is able to accommodate discharges less than 55,000cfs. However, nine of the thirteen Peak Flood Discharges listed on the worksheet were at flood stage or drastically above; with the maximum rise of 17.77 feet above and a discharge rate of 101,200cfs. The average discharge rate of the top three noted floods per information on the Stream Gauge Data of Peak Flow Discharges is 93,613cfs, which is resourceful later in determining the extrapolated 75 year flood. CITY COUNCIL CONCERNS 1. What is the recurrence interval of floods in Hazard City? In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, many examples of unfair treatment and social outcasts are used. Constantly, themes of prejudice and social expectations are accurately displayed by creating outcasts in society and relying on pre judgments to judge behavior. She also accurately displays the fact that not all people in the South during that time were prejudiced. Social expectations are a strong aspect of the town of Maycomb in To Kill a Mockingbird. Many outcasts are created using these expectations. In the story, the Radley s are viewed as a very odd family and when the main character and narrator, Scout, reveals the ... When Robinson was arrested the sheriff, Heck Tate, showed no mercy and did not second guess himself. Prejudice is showed in this moment because Robinson was not questioned at all when he was arrested, but if he had been white the demeanor would change. To further prove that it would have a different outcome if Tom Robinson was white, Lee incorporates a quote that recalls the time when Tate refuses to put a white man behind bars. Socrates, his mentor, serves as narrator and Plato s interpreter in the dialogue. He discusses the meaning of justice and how one can achieve it, and ultimately reach happiness. The definition given to justice, although not completely solidified, is that being just means doing what one is best suited for and focusing on one s own behavior and life. His strategy is to present the idea of a utopian just city state, and derive the notion of individual justice from that, suggesting that his definition of it will apply to both large political structures and single human beings. In the parable, a group of people is described as prisoners inside a deep cave. They have been chained to the walls since childhood, and are unable to move, only seeing what is in front of them. The only source of light they have inside the cave is from a fire that projects shadows of objects manipulated by another group of people; these shadows are everything they believe to be the reality. A prisoner is freed and forced to look at the fire and the artifacts. Pain and confusion take over for a short period, for that the direct exposure to the light is arduous, but the prisoner slowly realizes and accepts that what he sees now is more real than the shadows he saw before, which were only flawed copies. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him across the face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to run away. The plan falls through and the two end up at the park face to face with the Socs the same Socs that jumped Johnny. While Ponyboy stares at Bob, he thinks , Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. Within the American culture, women s rights have expanded to the extent of being able to vote for who runs our country or even possibly being the person that does run our country. Although the American culture has somewhat promoted the growth of a woman s role in society, does not mean women receive the same respect in other cultures around world. For example, in Africa women are viewed lower on the totem pole of importance even though without them the village would fall apart. The way in which the women of the Igbo village are presented, by Achebe, make it seem as if they serve very little purpose to the society. The main character, Okonkwo, is infatuated with making sure he does not turn out to be like his father. By living in a village where manliness was crucial and weakness was not, Okonkwo viewed his father as being a weak and cowardly mean because he could barely support his family. To make sure he did not become an adult that resembled his father, he developed the characteristics of being brave, wealthy and even violent. Since he acquired these traits, it gave him a sense of superiority over his wives and the other women of the village. Perhaps because of Okonkwo s behavior, the women of the village are treated with less respect. It is portrayed by Achebe that the women of the Igbo village only purpose is looking after the children and helping their husbands when or if it is needed. Although the women of the Igbo village are described as being insignificant, the women are the people that fill in the gaps in the society. For example, the women are the ones that cook, clean, take care of everyone, help harvest and grow food, as well as all the other everyday tasks that are easily overlooked. Achebe mentions specific characters for a reason or in this case he leaves out a specific character. Okonkwo s mother is mentioned merely once in Achebe s novel, Things Fall ... As 1 Samuel opens, the era of the judges is still in the forefront, but it is fading fast. The leadership of Israel rests on the undisciplined and elderly Eli, the high priest of the tabernacle at Shiloh and one of the last of the minor judges (1 Sam 4:18). Throughout the early chapters of 1 Samuel, the author draws a sharp contrast between Eli and his ungodly sons and the godly prophet Samuel. By the middle of the book (1 Samuel 15 16), the same kind of contrast is drawn between Saul and David. In 2 Samuel the narrative shifts to the reign of David as he rises above Saul s son Ish bosheth to become the king, first of Judah and then of all the tribes of Israel (5:1 4). The book records David s wars of conquest including the capture of Jerusalem and the relocation of the ark of the covenant to the City of David (6:1 19). The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, however, contrasts independence and dependence with interdependence, two or more people relying on each other. Kingsolver values interdependence the most as shown through her characters Taylor, Turtle, and Lou Ann; these characters all try for independence or dependence before realizing that interdependence is the right balance of the two. When Taylor and Lou Ann first meet, they instantly find a connection. After the war American had to change its focus, to quality, and people instead of cargo. (Bright, 1978) Because of the governments withdraw of subsides, Boeing found a way for indirect government funds for the development and tooling costs of its jet airliner. The president of Boeing saw the US Air Forces need for a tanker, and thought the 707 would be the prefect design. He was able to persuade the Air Force that the 707 could be turned into KC 135 and produce on the same line and would save money. Revenue from passenger miles grew in the early to mid 50 s at a rapid rate. With these higher revenues the airlines had more spending power throughout the Korean War time frame. They used these earnings to purchase more piston planes, because of the skepticism and high cost of the jet engine. Other manufacturers did not find the same success as Boeing, too much indecision and they did on see the potential in jets. Through the discovery of these traits, many people can overcome conflict and create workable solutions to difficult problems, or even make appropriate compromises. A monumental example of this was Rosa Parks the mother of the freedom movement , an African American activist in the time of the black and white segregation, refused to give up her seat in the coloured section of the bus to a white passenger, after the white section was filled. • 40. How Did Andrew Carnegie Contribute To Power Andrew Carnegie is the perfect example of a rags to riches story. Mr. Carnegie started out as an extremely poor immigrant boy from Scotland. He slowly worked his way up in the world, picking up random jobs and investing in different companies. Eventually, he took advantage of advancement in the steel industry and virtually created a monopoly. This made Andrew Carnegiean extremely wealthy man. His fortunes exceeded what would be 14 trillion dollars in todays currency (Graybar). Because of Andrew Carnegie s extreme wealth, he was a very powerful person who used his power to benefit mankind. Andrew Carnegie used the power he had in a very positive way. Carnegie often donated money to different causes. For example, one of his goals from the time he was a young man was to help in the accomplishment of world peace. Bones stop growing in length between the ages of 16 and 18, but continue to increase in density until you re in your late 20s. You gradually start to lose bone density from about 35 years of age. Women normally lose bone rapidly in the first few years. Osteoporosis can affect both men and women. It s more common in elderly people, but it can also affect younger people after the menopause. Underwater Cemetery Research Paper Underwater Cemetery How new technologies have helped undersea treasure hunters disturb long forgotten shipwrecks According to the United Nations more than three million shipwrecks can be found on the ocean floor. These ships contain trillion dollars worth of artifacts, however we should not forget that an incalculable number of people lost their lives on those ships, making them massive underwater cemeteries. All those deaths left behind them mourning family members who demand that wrecks be left as undisturbed graves. An experienced diver once claimed that hunting through a shipwreck was like walking through a haunted house. You can sense the presence of those who sank with the ship and have nothing to identify their lost remains. This is why the shipwreck are primarily their graveyard and not a place for treasure hunts. They should be left in peace. Ships like the Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes which sank near the coast of Tampa bay, killing over 200 crews members, should be protected by some regulation. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms specifically protects Aboriginal rights under section 25 and section 15 declares that, Every individual is equal before and under the law (Sharpe Roach, 2009, p. 307). This policy resulted in a vulnerable group being removed from their homes and placed into an environment plagued with physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual abuse. Isolation from all aspects of one s culture was degrading, isolating, and discouraging. The implementation of residential schools can be considered an action taken with societies best interests in mind. The policy initially appeared to be free from de jure discrimination since the purpose was to empower the aboriginal population and give them the tools they needed to succeed in a modern society. The abuse suffered by the students did not appear to be an intentional result of the assimilation policy adopted by the government. Policy makers had a desire to create a generation of aboriginals accustomed to the ways of civilized life (Llewellyn, 2002, p. 257). Unfortunately the policy had flaws and experiences in residential schools have resulted in numerous accounts of injuries sustained and psychological damage (Akhtar, 2010, p. 263). The fact that discrimination actively occurred to this group of people is an example of de facto discrimination. • 47. Analysis of Anselm s Ontological Argument and the Argument... Roxx Alvarado Professor Aaron Wilson PHI2010 8 September 2011 Analysis to Anselm s Ontological Argument and the Argument from Evil The debate of the existence of God had been active since before the first philosopher has pondered the question. Anselm s Ontological Argument was introduced during the 11th century and had stood deductively valid until the 18th century. Then there are the arguments to aim disprove God, such as the Argument from Evil. The Ontological argument is an a priori deductive argument. That is, an argument relating to being, that is independent of prior knowledge of the subject and with a conclusion you must accept IF one accepts the preceding premises. St. Anselm of Canterbury presents the Ontological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leads to the conclusion, if you accept the premises then you accept the existence of the greatest being possible, God. This concept of God s existence is also led with the idea that God is a necessary being, a being that is not dependent of something greater in order to exist. If God relied on another being, like how a children rely on parents to conceive them, then this being called God is not God because it would be imperfect. Therefore, there must be another to call God that meets all the requirements for perfection. One of the first popular objections was created by Gaunilo of Marmoutiers. The premise and conclusion to Gaunilo s argument is identical to Anselm s argument except with the replacement of the word God with the Lost island and the word being with island . As simple as that, though Gaunilo s argument is completely absurd, Gaunilo s reductio ad absurdum also proves to be as deductively valid as Anselm s argument. However, this Lost Island could in no way exist. The absurdity and validity of the lost island quickly brought up questions as to how Anselm s Argument cannot be absurd. Anselm s argument was not proven invalid until Immanuel Kant, a german philosopher during the 18th century, proposed an objection that would be the decisive blow to the Ontological argument (Immanuel Kant.
