Adversity is apparent in aspects of life. It manifests though feelings, thoughts, and
actions that occur through different situations. When adversity is combined with
dysfunction it creates a dynamic circumstance that tests the boundaries of individuals,
and by extension, society. This is the case when Director Clint Eastwood and author

With the Union victory in the Civil War in 1865, millions of slaves were given their
freedom. Although these millions of slaves are now free, the rebuilding on the South
during the Reconstruction introduced many obstacles. These obstacles include
sharecropping, tenant farming, the black codes , and not to forget the lack of
education and rights African Americans had at the time. Sharecroppingis consisted of
a slave renting land from a white man and having to give up a portion of their crops
at the end of each year. The black codes were basically laws against what type of
labor African Americans can be given. In the state of South Carolina, blacks were
only able to work as farmers or servants; the same jobs these free people worked as
slaves. After decades of slavery, blacks were still under the control of the white
people due to lack of education and rights.
In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation freed all African Americans that lived in
rebel states. For years, only the rebel states had free African Americans, however,
after the Civil War, the Thirteenth Amendment freed all slaves, no matter where
they were. Of course, after years of slavery, whites were not used to having free
African Americans around them, creating a hostile environment. One former slave,
Houston Holloway wrote, For we colored people did not know how to be free and the

given a science dipstick labeled Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems . This
dipstick sums up the unit that the students have been working on where they created
their ecosystem posters and determined which animals belong in each ecosystem. The
teacher explained to the students that she calls these dipsticks instead of tests because
these documents are more focused on seeing what they took away from the unit. She
then read the pages of the dipstick so that they students could pay more attention to
the science than the reading. During this time the teacher explained some background
information about the students overall unit and what is needed to be taught
according to the science curriculum. While I was watching as the students were
taking their dipstick I was able to see that some of them were able to determine the
soil conditions, the climate, and explain why certain animals could or could not live

Syphilis is a venereal disease that can be contacted and spread by means of sexual
intercourse. An infected pregnant mother can also pass the disease to the unborn
child during pregnancy. The disease is caused by a corkscrew shaped bacterium
called a spirochete, Treponema pallidum. The bacteria cause sores or ulcers to
appear on the skin of the penis, vagina, and mouth. In some occasions, the sore can
appear in the rectum, on the tongue, lips, or breast.
During sexual intercourse, the bacteria is transferred from the sore of the person
and enters the moist membranes of the sexual partner s penis, vagina, mouth, or
rectum. Once the bacteria enter the body, it multiplies at a fast rate. The bacteria
enter the lymph circulation, which carries the bacteria to adjacent lymph glands,
which swells as a response to the infection. During the first stages of the disease,
which is called primary syphilis and lasts for a few weeks, sores and ulcers begin to
develop, particularly in the genital area of the victim. Blood tests during this stage
may not reveal the disease yet, but the bacteria can be scraped from the sores.
Eventually, the sores will heal, and the victim may recover from the disease without
any treatment.
The second stage of the disease is called the secondary syphilis, which begins about
two to six weeks after the sores have healed.
