Racial Profiling And Native Americans
Racial Profiling and Native Americans
Keith A. Kuhn
Criminology 410 005
9 October 2014
Introduction
When you hear the words police racial profiling your mind may automatically jump to images of
white cops stopping young black men in expensive cars, the Rodney King beatings, or even the Rev.
Al Sharpton giving a deposition about racial tensions. This is because those images are the hot button,
go to stories that media often bombards the six o clock news with. As Americans, we have seen so
much of these images that we tend to think that the racial divide is only black and white. However,
what if you were to be told that racial profiling is more than just white on black? There is a group of
Americans who face more racial discrimination than African Americans: Native Americans. Native
Americans are under represented as victims and over persecuted as offenders. This paper will attempt
to define the issue of racial profiling and how it affects Native Americans, provide a review of the
current research being done, and provide a brief interview that shows how this subject is viewed in
real world scenarios.
Definition
Racial discrimination is defined by Law.com as unequal treatment of persons, for a reason which has
nothing to do with legal rights or ability. Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination in many facets
of society. However, racial profiling by law enforcement is commonly defined as a practice that
targets people for suspicion of crime based

The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal...
ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal
cord (Widmaier et al. 2014).
Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks, called
plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of these nerve
cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric (Auerbach s)
plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall 2006). The nerve
cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the smooth muscle of
digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity in the other since
some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et al. 2014). Extrinsic
nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse with neurons in each
of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). Though the ENS can function without these
nerve pathways, the subsystems of the ANS can influence gastrointestinal activity (Guyton and Hall
2006; Widmaier et al. 2014). An example would include either inhibiting or enhancing the GI tract s
motility and secretory activity through the sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers (Widmaier et al.
2014).
The myenteric and submucosal plexuses each have different physiological functions. The myenteric
plexus spans the length of the intestinal wall and consists of

Analysis Of The Book Harrison Bergeron
Can an equal society truly exist? The story, Harrison Bergeron gives one perspective answer to this
question throughout the story. The story portrays one main conflict between Harrison Bergeron, a
genius boy who is very talented, against a government that makes the entire society equal by
handicapping the more gifted, down to the level of the less fortunate or incapable. Harrison constantly
outgrows his tremendous handicaps faster than the government can create them and plans to
overthrow the handicap government and society with his genius. The reader learns that there is a
constant struggle with the people in the society who are smarter being able to think on their own for a
short while to only come and find themselves lost, since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wife tries to persuade him and convince him that he should take off his handicaps for a while and
rest. George can still better understand the consequences of those potential actions and thus can still
outsmart his wife by making a different decision. Through this passage, the reader also learns that
even in this handicap society of equality not everyone is truly equal. If everyone was truly equal
George wouldn t have been able to make a more correct reasoning than another person and choose
different actions based on knowledge and reason. This just once again proves that even in a perfect
society not everything is perfect.
At the end of the story and at the climax the reader learns about the character Harrison Bergeron. The
genius boy starts to plot to overthrow the handicapper General and her government. By escaping from
jail Harrison proceeds to a TV studio to proclaim his revolt to the rest of the society. Once ripping off
his handicaps and the handicaps of the rest of the people in the TV studio area, Harrison began to
show the joys of having talents. He asks the orchestra to play their best so he and the ballerina can
truly make a wonderful dance and experience what music is supposed to truly be. As the wonderful
music is played and the elaborate dance proceeds, the Handicap General herself storms the studio and
kills the ballerina and Harrison

The Importance Of Food Safety
Upon inspection of the food services department, we have found a gross negligence of the state food
safety regulations. Upon inspection of the food service department we have found foodborne hazard of
biological, chemical, and of physical nature. The organization will note that a foodborne hazard is any
biological, physical, or chemical substance that may get into food and cause harm to individuals who
eat that food (Safian, 2014). Of those found to be in the biological nature include contamination of
expired poultry, beef, and eggs. Upon consumption of any of these meats by partons or patient of the
facility, individuals could develop salmonella poisoning, listeria, bacillus cereus, and norovirus which
is the leading cause of acute epidemic gastroenteritis among children under the age of 5 years and
adults in the United States and in adults worldwide, accounting for an estimated 20% of episodes of
acute gastroenteritis across all ages ( Foodborne Diseases and Conditions Norovirus, 2017). Disease
caused by these conditions will cause vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, fever, respiratory failure, and death.
Based off of the information gathered from our inspection in regards to biological foodborne hazards,
the food service department will be closed until properly brought to code and that it is my
recommendation that employees in this department be terminated due to the negligence found.
Upon completion of the inspection of the food services department, many physical hazards have were
found, some of which according to employees have not be fixed or working properly for quite
sometime. There are extreme amounts of dust covering the vents which hang above the food
preparation error, four light bulbs that have gone out and judging by the amount of dust on them have
been out for quite sometime. Employees adhering to the dress code in which all employees working in
the food service department should wear a facility approved hat or hair net. Female employees have
also been notated for having decorative fingernails which are in violation of the ยผ of inch less rule
clearly defined in the employee handbook. Other hazards have found a buildup of dirt within the tile
grout of the floor in the kitchen which proves sweeping

Kingsford Charcoal Case
Kingsford Charcoal Case
Alex Lau
Marketing Management
Professor Wright

Introduction Grilling is engraved in American culture as well as a highly seasonal activity. Kingsford
Charcoal is in the business of selling charcoal for grills. Even though Kingsford increased its market
share in 2000, their forecast indicates they will not reach the initial revenue mark. With the charcoal
market s growth slowing, and the gas grill market gaining market share, Kingsford needs to revise its
strategy, and their marketing mix to meet original expectations for itself and Clorox. The following
report will identity the issues Kingsford faces in the market place and recommend actions to take to
resolve these problems. First we will examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned before, charcoal is well in the mature stage of the product cycle in which more
advertising would be optimal. Charcoal should be Kingsford s cash cow in which they can use the
funds generated from them and invest it in research and development; so that they may introduce a
new product preferably in the gas grilling market in the near future. As with a stagnant price increase,
the same can be said of advertising from Kingsford. Their advertising budget has decreased
throughout the years, while the gas grilling market has increased its advertising budget each year.
MMA s analysis of 1998 spending shown that TV advertising can drive volume increase of around 7%
for the current year and even a 3% to 4% increase of volume purchased in the following year. This
indicates the importance of advertising. One area which is lacking for the whole charcoal category
since Kingsford is the only brand that advertises at all for charcoal. Perhaps advertisements can show
how charcoal grilling is the correct and tasty way to grill instead of gas grilling. Kingsford can look to
do blind tastings again and publish the findings. If they look to stretch the grilling season they should
look beyond just NASCAR events, but perhaps also with NFL sporting events, as well as other events
and activities in which grilling is popular. They could become a sponsor in which sports can endorse

Pilot Plant Case Study
The U.S. Army facility in Aberdeen known as the Pilot Plant was responsible for endangering the lives
of employees and the surrounding community during the years of 1983 through 1986. The chemicals
used and stored were highly dangerous and lethal to humans. The chemicals were improperly stored in
incorrect locations with improper labels, and leaking barrels. After a roof collapsed it took two weeks
for the chemical spills to be properly dealt with. An acid spill consisting of 200 gallons spilt into a
local river and investigation reported improper storage and containment equipment. The acts occurred
violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Three engineers were responsible for either
overlooking or not caring as to how chemicals within the facility were stored and maintained. The
three engineers were Carl Gepp, William Dee, and Robert Lentz. The engineers were specialist in
chemical weaponry and stated lack of knowledge for proper containment and storage procedures. The

The employees of the plant could have whistle blew and in doing so investigation could have arose.
The investigation could have brought earlier legal action forcing proper storage and facility standards.
Fear of job security could hold someone from blowing the whistle and to avoid this, an anonymous
whistle blowing phone line to an outside agency could have been implemented. This way no
repercussion could arise to the employee. Another implication that could have avoided this situation is
having the engineers take yearly courses updating them on new federal laws and RCRA regulations.
To ensure that internally the matters couldn t be pushed under the rug chemical facilities could require
regular checks to ensure no wrong doing is occurring. This could be done by having different
departments analyzing the safety of other departments and brining this up at daily or weekly safety

Explore The Theme Of Love And Loss In Romeo And Juliet
The play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is a story about love and hate that teaches
us about the consequences of extreme passion. Throughout the play Shakespeare has explored the
themes of love, hate and loss. With these themes Shakespeare shows us how love, hate and loss can be
so tragic.
Love plays a major role in William Shakespeare s play Romeo and Juliet as it demonstrates to readers
just how far someone will go just to be together with the one they love. This is seen through Romeo,
when Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo all attend the Capulet s party uninvited. Romeo instantly falls
head over heels in love with Juliet. After Romeo discovers that Juliet is a Capulet he still loves her

Right after Romeo has found out that Juliet is a Capulet he says Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My
life is my foe s debt. (Act 1, Scene 5, Line 124). This metaphor shows us that Romeo is comparing his
love for Juliet but also to debts or payments. This quote also holds to meaning behind the word dear.
The first being that Juliet is dear to him and the other being debt because he is afraid that Juliet s
father Capulet won t approve of his love for Juliet, so Capulet would tell Romeo to stay away from his
daughter. In the scene where Romeo is standing outside Juliet s balcony declaring his love for Juliet.
One of the things that Romeo says that displays his affection for Julie is With love s light wings did I o
erperch these walls. For stony limits cannot hold love out... ( Act 2, Scene 2, Line 70). Using the
technique of imagery it justifies to us that Romeo believes that he has the wings

Illnesses caused by disease and other infections have troubled inhabitants of this world for centuries.
However, modern science and epidemiology allow us to break down the organisms that cause the
illness in order to treat and prevent it. We can now understand the classification and type of organism
as well as its life cycle. We can discover its mode of transmission and methods to diagnose it. By
determining these factors, the future of the organism can be determined and lives can be saved. Today,

The matching structure of NDM 1 inhibits the effectiveness of the antibiotics that share the same
chemical structure. Carbapenems are relatively new antibiotics that are used to treat organisms that
have mutated and developed resistances to older antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins.
NDM 1 is further resistant to carbapenems because it secrets the enzyme carbapenemase. This
secretion inhibits the antibiotics from synthesizing the bacteria s cell wall in order to disable the
bacteria. It is concerning that NDM 1 already has a strong resistance to the more effective
carbapenems. Unfortunately the life cycle for this organism is unknown as of yet. This uncertainty
aids in making NDM 1 a threat to society. Once it is understood how NDM 1 bacteria are transmitted,
the health threats associated with the organism can be diagnosed and treated more easily. NDM 1 is
easily transmitted because it resides in the plasmids of the bacteria, which provides an ideal surface
for horizontal gene transfer. Thus, NDM 1 can easily transfer from one bacterial strain to another or
from one bacterial genus to another. Because the main strains of bacteria that produce NDM 1
(escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, and enterobacter cloacae) reside in the bowels if the body,
the disease is often spread through fecal material. Once the bacterium is transferred, a variety of
symptoms may arise: a urinary tract infection, a bloodstream infection or sepsis,

Cathedral (by Raymond Carver)
Cathedral: A Lesson for the Ages
Raymond Carver s short story, Cathedral, portrays a story in which many in today s society can relate.
We are introduced from the first sentence of the story to a man that seems to be perturbed and agitated.
As readers, we are initially unsure to the reasoning s behind the man s discomfort. The man, who
seems to be a direct portrayal of Raymond Carver himself, shows his ignorance by stereotyping a
blind man by the name of Robert, who has come to stay with he and his wife. From the very
beginning, Carver shows his detest for Robert but over the course of the story eases into comfort with
him and in the end is taught a lesson from the very one he despised.
The story begins with a description of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That s alright, he says, I m glad for the company. The two then focus their attention to the television
and some middle age show about cathedrals. It is this show from which the author gets the name of
this short story, Cathedral . It also is relevant because it gives the blind man the opportunity to share
with Carver his state of mind.
The blind man sees the TV show as a way for him to express his views to Carver. After inquiring into
the show, Robert asks Carver to simply explain what the Cathedral s look like. Carver does this but
soon realizes that he is not doing a very good job. I m not doing so good am I. This doesn t work so
Robert then asks the author if would mind drawing one with him. Carver agrees and leaves to gather
supplies. Before long, he returns and they begin their project. We at this point the strong change in
interaction between the two characters. The blind man diligently places his hand on that of Carver and
they draw, together. The two are intently drawing the cathedral when Robert asks Carver to keep

The Effect Of Sodium Chloride On The Germination Rate Of...
Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to observe the effects of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) on the
germination rate of Wisconsin Fast Plants.
Wisconsin Fast Plants (WFPs), or Brassica rapa, are plants in the Cruciferous family, developed
through selective breeding from a strain of Himalayan weeds (Williams). WFPs have a life cycle of
around forty days. This short life cycle makes WFPs valuable for laboratory study. In addition, WFPs
are simple to grow, as they only need water and a light source to survive (Williams). Their simple
needs, allowing ease in controlling variables, make WFPs ideal for use in experiments.
Germination is the stage of plant growth through which a seed becomes a seedling plant. First, the
seed begins to absorb water and the radicle root emerges from the seed coat and into the water. Then,
the primary roots grow, the cotyledons move above ground, the stem begins to grow, and leaves
develop. The process is complete when the first leaves open and the cotyledons fall off (The Learning
Garden 2001).
NaCl has been shown to have a negative effect on plant growth (Lee and Van Iersal 2016) and
germination (Houle et al. 2001). The severity of these effects depends on the individual species ability
to grow in saline soil (Atkins et al. 2009). WFPs are part of a group of plants called glycophytes,
meaning that they have a limited ability to tolerate NaCl (Atkins et al. 2009). A study specific to WFP
germination found a decrease in germination in WFPs

The Soul Stays the Same in Plato
I think, Socrates, he said, that on this line of argument any man, even the dullest, would agree that the
soul is altogether more like that which always exists in the same state rather than like that which does
not (Plato, Phaedo 79e)
In this paper I will argue that the soul is not necessarily unchanging and eternal, as many of Plato s
arguments would suggest otherwise. The main reasons in support of this claim are that there are
questionable conclusions that Plato had reached that challenge the validity of his theory on immortal
souls. The Phaedo is one of Plato s greatest dialogues addressing the essence of the afterlife through a
discussion between Socrates and his students. Plato s main argument within the Phaedo is that there is

I mean such things as good and evil, just and unjust and there are innumerable other opposites which
are generated out of opposites. And I want to show that this holds universally of all opposites; I mean
to say, for example, that anything which becomes greater must become greater after being less. (Plato,
70d) In the dialogue Socrates established that everything is generated from its opposite so must have
an opposite. However, it is valid to question this by interpreting the opposite argument. If to say
everything has an opposite, would the opposite of existence be non existence? Existence is created
from non existence and non existence from existence. If this is true, than would not the existence of a
soul suggest that at some point the soul did not exist? Thus, it may be that the soul had a previous
existence but it does not definitively suggest that the soul is immortal and has no end. This is
somewhat related to Cebes argument that that soul may have existed through many bodies but may
eventually pass on. Plato fails to further explain the cycle of the soul. Socrates does not give detail on
when the cycle of the soul begins or how it may have started. Furthermore, if one relies on the
opposites argument for support of the immortal theory then one could consider that is there was a
beginning to the cycle of the soul than there would be some sort of end.
The Theory of Recollection also has some gaps in its logic

money laundering as the warden had forced him to book his laundering schemes otherwise he would
make it hell for him. The major film technique that was involved in this scene was when Andy was
breaking the pipe, the camera was facing up towards him and then switch to the lightning strike
through the window, then quickly switch to Andy crashing the piece of concrete against the pipe. This
film technique gave the effect of intensity and made the audience be on the edge of their seats. This
scene if very significant to the story because this when Andy literally escapes from Shawshank and the
themes displayed in the scene displays how much defiance and hope Andy really had. In conclusion,
Shawshank Redemption used characterization and film techniques to display Escape through Andy
and the people around successfully. Personally, I really enjoyed watching Shawshank Redemption
because the film used a lot of thought provoking themes

Substance Abuse Disorder ( Samhsa )
According to the SAMHSA (2010) report on the national survey on drug use and health almost 22.5
million people are reported to be associated with substance abuse disorder (SAMHSA, 2010). This
illness was found to be very common in all age groups, both sex, and seniors. There are several effects
on these individuals and their families. Many people who suffer from substance abuse disorders fail to
acknowledge these serious consequences. First of all, no response of pain relief can be seen with
smaller doses of pain medications, as their bodies are used to high levels of various substances at the
same time. Nurses become frustrated when they try to treat and help these patients with pain.
Sometimes it is difficult to think about ethical principles when nurses have to deal with such patients
with pain and suffering.
Research has shown that there are several organizations and active advocates who are working on pain
management problems to face this public health issue. The following establishments involve: The
American Academy of Pain Medicine, Institute of Medicine, and American Pain Society and many for
profit and nonprofit organizations are also working at different level towards pain management. Most
specifically, the IOM has been devoted to studying pain and its consequences on individuals, the
healthcare system, as well as on government (IOM, 2011).
According to the ANA Code for Nurses Provision 1, nurses must treat and respect every patient with
dignity, regardless of

Edna s Sonnet Millay
Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892 1950) was an American poet and playwright who was best known for
her feminist activism and her controversial views on love and sex. Millay s open views regarding
sexuality provide readers with insight when analyzing the tone of her Sonnet (Women Have Loved
Before As I Love Now). Edna St. Vincent Millay s use of powerful diction, exemplified by her choice
of the words suffer and treacherous, add to her melancholy and lamenting tone in the sestet, and aid in
the understanding of the overall message of her sonnet. Millay s use of the harsh word suffer, sets a
melancholy and lamenting tone in the sestet of her sonnet, which contradicts her carefree tone in the
octave. She uses the word suffer to describe how she feels

Teens And Teen Pregnancy
As us females were young we all seem to become mothers, by playing with dolls, and playing house
with others our age. It may be easy for us to say that as children we thought they needed some
assistance, but in reality that was only our imagination. As little kids did we really think about what it
would be like to really have a baby? We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still
children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have a
baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what life
would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons why and
what it really is like. The first reason why a girl can easily get pregnant is not being informed about
contraceptives. There are about 1,700 school based health centers nationwide in which about โ…“
provide contraceptives. Sexual education is very important when it comes to this, there are states that
still require parents to sign off their children receiving any sexual education in schools, in which many
of the cases the parents and their kids are too embarrassed to talk about. Although it is the parent s
responsibility to talk about it, they do not. When a teen is sexually active, it is important for them to
let a parent know, so that they can get checked. Another possible reason can be unwanted sex.

Benir V. Alba
Legal Opinion on the Benir v. Alba Case
(Benir)
On the present case being addressed to the International Court of Justice in dealing with the matter of
sovereignty over the Island of Manca, the issue of legality belonging to which side of the parties at
dispute is put forward. The problem however, lies in, the period at which the dispute took place, for
International law has not evolved at that time unlike in this day and age.
The Statement of fact is as follows:
The Island of Manca, small in size and blessed by temperature vegetation, has been discovered by the
Albanese State in 1560, when it was inhabited by a native tribe, the Mancans. The Albanese state put a

Also, no objection to the form of Berniri government took place. Thus, this fulfills the Self
determination of the Peoples condition and guarantees a peaceful atmosphere.
2. After clarifying the former point to the court, the second and most crucial element to shed light on is
Territorial Acquisition. As demonstrated before in the Island of Palmas Case before, there must be
evidence as to a peaceful and continuous display of sovereignty on the territory; it should also be a
public and enduring practice. In the case of Benir, there is enough evidence to prove a peaceful and
continuous display of its sovereignty existed and still does, it established state control, managed good
relations with the natives (through intermarriage), as they coexisted peacefully, and it was willing to
protect the rights of other states in peace and in war, as well as offer for the safeguarding of the rights
of non nationals residing in it, however this is an infrequent happening since the island is small in size.
Thus, a peaceful atmosphere was provided for continuously by the Beniris, with only one exception at

Of Mice And Men Quotes About Lonliness
No one ever said lonliness is a great passtime, our whole is filled with it. We witness it almost
everyday and are, once in a while, affected by it, but never longer than we can bear. However, many
individuals during the Great Depression lived with this unbearable and inescapable lonliness, working
all day and not having anyone but themselves to care for them or to care for. Jhon Stienbeck, the
author of Of Mice and Men, demonstrates that too much lonliness can cause a person to live with the
unbearable pain of knowing that they only have themselves, shown with Candy, Crooks, and Curley s
wife Candy the old swamper showed how seniors were treated during the Great Depression, and how

During the great depression coloured people were highley discriminated. In the book Crooks said, S

loneliness by clearly stating he has nobody. Crooks is the stable buck on the ranch, and completes the
tasks that are too difficult for others to do. He is seen as inferior and is completley unwanted, which
leads to lonliness because no one wants to talk to him. He is never talked to, so he is aloof and lonely
and all he ever wishes for is someone to care for him or just be near him. Another part of the novella
Crooks shows lonliness is , long as you wont get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down.
this quote indicates that Crooks is aloof and unfriendly to white men but, enjoys everyones company.
That is because he is left all alone and never talked to, so he finds great pleassure in the smallest

restore anatomic articular stepping, sagittal alignment, coronal alignment and condylar width.
Splitting of lateral plateau in split depression fracture caused a loss of lateral support for lateral

The Viewer Is The Witness In Night And Fog
How the Viewer is the Witness in Night and Fog Alain Resnais Night and Fog is a Holocaust
documentary shot in 1955 that served as a lens into the hellish landscape of the Holocaust. It was shot
with footage of the Holocaust combined with a voiceover narration that provides a detailed look into
the horrors of the Holocaust. The film proved to be a success but it struggled through censorship due
to its inherent gruesome nature. This is because the film uses various techniques in such a way that the
viewer of the film feel that they themselves have become witnesses of these tragedies, as opposed to
just being a viewer of a documentary about the Holocaust, thus making the viewer experience of the
film much more impactful. Traditional documentaries use interviews and first hand witness accounts
to tell the story, but Night and Fog does not. It presents everything objectively and lets the powerful,
fast paced cinematography and narration tell the story. Another technique used is the rapid
juxtaposition shots from the past and present, thus giving the film a sense of timelessness. The last
technique used is toward the end when the narrator asks the harrowing question whether or not ...

Night and Fog refrains from all of this, and accomplishes its goal of educating about the Holocaust by
simply showing horror after horror after horror of the Holocaust, giving the viewer no time to digest
and process the information. Without anytime for the viewer to breathe, the fast pace makes for a truly
painful viewing experience which is precisely what the director intended. Some documentaries might
refrain from the utmost revolting of content for fear of deterring their viewers but Night and Fog never
censors the unquestionable reality of the past. Even though the film is only half an hour long, this
stylization allows the film to encompass plenty of information about the

The Replication Of DNA In Escherichia Coli
Introduction
Today s issue of Biology: Meselson and Stahl (Vol 4, 1958) includes a groundbreaking development
into further understanding of DNA Replication. On pages 671 682 is an article titled The Replication
of DNA in Escherichia Coli . Meselson and Stahl conducted an experiment to understand how DNA
self replicates by the use of Bacterial transformation to clone parental DNA.
In the article, Meselson and Stahl investigate the distribution between the parental and daughter DNA
molecules. This is achieved by the use of Radio Isotopic labelling. Uniform Isotopic N15 was grown
in E.coli consisting of N14 medium to observe the distribution of N15 DNA macromolecules. Within
the article, the authors also discuss the problems they faced during the investigation and how
significant Watsons and Cricks Double helix suggests how DNA self replicates.
What is DNA?
The discovery of the structure of DNA has always been associated with Watson and Crick. Their
double helix structure, which they developed in 1983, has been used as a model to understand how
DNA self replicates (Karp, 2009). The structure of DNA is made up of covalent bonds between 4
unique nucleotide bases. These bases bind together via complementary base pairing, therefore
allowing Adenine to only bind with Thymine, and Cytosine with Guanine (Penn State, Ebery College
of Science, 2016). The use of covalent bonds makes the structure strongly bound like a zipper.
However, just like a zipper, it can easily open up

DNA Essay example
DNA is a term that has been used in science as well as in many parts of daily life. The general public
knows that DNA is a part of our bodies but they may wonder what exactly is DNA? DNA is a term
used for deoxyribonucleic acid and it is the genetic material of all organisms, it is the molecule of life
and it determines all of our physical characteristics. DNA is present in every single form of life. More
than 50 years after the science of genetics was established and the patterns of inheritance were
clarified, the largest questions remained unanswered: How are the chromosomes and their genes
copied exactly from cell to cell, and how do they direct the structure and behavior of living things?
Two American geneticists, George ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To make a new, identical copy of the DNA molecule, the two strands unwind and separate at the bases
which are weakly bound; with more nucleotides available in the cell, new complementary bases can
link with each separated strand, and two double helixes result. (Caldwell) Since the backbone of every
chromosome is a single long, double stranded molecule of DNA, the production of two identical
double helixes will result in the production of two identical chromosomes.
The DNA backbone is actually longer than the chromosome but is tightly coiled up within it. This
packing is now known to be based on minute particles of protein known as nucleosomes, that can only
be seen under the most powerful electron microscope. The DNA is wound around each nucleosome to
form a beaded structure.
The structure is then further folded so that the beads associate in regular coils. Thus, the DNA has a
coiled coil configuration.
After the discoveries of Watson and Crick, the question that remained was how the DNA directs the
formation of proteins, compounds central to all the processes of life. Proteins are not only the major
components of most cell structures, they also control virtually all the chemical reactions that occur in
living matter. The ability of a protein to act as part of a structure, or as an enzyme affecting the rate of
a particular chemical reaction, depends on its molecular shape. This shape, in turn,

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Crisis
Crisis refers to a person s reaction to a particular event. One person might be deeply affected while the
other has little or no ill effects to the same event. It presents a obstacle, threat or trauma but at the

a wide range of life experiences, from development hurdles such as puberty to natural disasters to the
death of a loved one. When people face a crisis, they can experience a range of physical and
physiological symptoms as well as changes in their normal routines and relationships. Crisis

Jesus Came As The Savior And The World, The Supreme Leader...
Jesus came as the Savior to Israel and the world, the supreme leader of Heaven. In the three and a half
years He ministered, He performed and accomplished astonishing feats. He preached life changing
sermons, and taught captivating parables that remain to test today s most educated scholars. He healed
hundreds of incurable diseases, provided food for thousands extraordinarily, calmed storms suddenly,
walked on water confidently, brought people back to life, and selected just a dozen men, eleven of
whom would go on to spend the rest of their lives fulfilling His mission. He selected hard working
people such as fishermen to be His apprentices, and helped and ate with regular people. He challenged
and condemned religious leaders, who resented and despised Him. He taught in Jerusalem, the cities
of Judea, out in the rural areas, in meadows, on mounds, and from boats in the water while multitudes
attended attentively from the shore. Jesus taught about a place, but not a place of this world. He never
had a family, owned a home, held an office, or even wrote a book. Though some would debate as
Christians we are children of God, He is seated at the gates of our eternal home in Heaven, sits at the
right hand of God, and played a major role and character in the bestselling book and greatest story

Famine Affluence And Morality
In Famine, Affluence and Morality, Peter Singer emphasizes the potential revisionary implications of
accepting utilitarianism as a guide for conduct. The moral philosophy Singer conveys in this text are
most closely related and comparable to the ideas of nineteenth century English philosopher, John
Stuart Mill as Singers approach is utilitarian rather than deontological. Despite their similarities, the
ideas of Singer and J.S Mill contain many discrepancies, especially with regard to whether they lean
towards act utilitarianism or rule utilitarianism. Although Singer and Mill both adhere to a
consequentialist theory as their moral philosophy, Singer upholds a more socialistic view and focuses
on maximizing the happiness of a community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From there, he further adds a weaker version of the second principle as he subsites something of
roughly equal moral importance for something of moral significance (506). He provides an example
for this weaker principle, which is as follows: if one is in a position to save a child drowning in a
pond, one should do so even though one might get their clothes muddy as that is not a morally
significant cost and the child s death would be an extremely morally bad state of affairs (506). There is
potentially a third premise, which is that we can not only prevent, but alleviate this poverty induced
suffering, without sacrificing something of comparable moral importance. Following the premises,
Singer presents his conclusion, which is that we ought to contribute as much as we can to the
eradication of poverty, until doing so harms us more than it benefits them. In other words, we should
give to the extent that if we were to give more, we would cause ourselves as much suffering as we are
preventing from someone else.
As mentioned, while Singer s moral philosophy is most closely related to utilitarianism, there are
differences between his theory and Mill s. Unlike Singer, whose assertion although not entirely, likely
holds better under Benthamite act utilitarianism, Mill s theory is instead linked to rule utilitarianism.

Racism In Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon
Title Analysis The title of Toni Morrison s acclaimed novel Song of Solomon has a few meanings that
can go along with it. The first is an allusion to the biblical book Song of Songs or commonly know as
Song of Solomon which is all about sexual themes and desires and that. The next meaning is a
reference to the protagonist s great grandfather whose name was Solomon and had a song about him in
which Solomon could fly and left his son Jake on the ground and inevitably to a white man s house.
Major Themes Racism: Racism plays a very pivotal role in this work as it shapes a character

The war on terror seems to be a never ending story, especially with the current events such as the

Prostitution Vs Prostitution
By saying the word prostitution most people will assign it with a negative connotation, even though
prostitution has many sides: some that we don t think about. One policy for how we should deal with
prostitution won t work for every country let alone every state, but it is something we need to discuss.
Here are two very different narratives of two women, not that these two accounts can generalize for
all, but we can see the spectrum in a better light. I had no idea that I was being tricked . . . I was
clueless. In Beijing, when I asked the madam for money, she told me to let this man take me to dinner
. . . I didn t even speak Mandarin. He took me to a hotel. I had never even used an elevator before in
my life. I only realized what was going on once I saw the bed in the room . . . The second time, they
put something into my vagina and made me pretend to be a virgin. Afterwards, it felt all rotten inside.
I had to go to the hospital, it was all stinky. The third time I tried to run away, but they caught me. I
had to continue tricking clients [into thinking I was a virgin]. But afterwards I would always bleed
down there. [Later] I ran away . . . and slept in the forest for two or three days . . . That whole time
they would get in touch with my parents and say that everything was fine . . . The madam knew my
mom (58 Boitton). We can go from an extremely horrific account to one where the ladies truthfully
decided to join the profession, love it then have a normal life.

capacity (3000bbl/hr). The Dryers set the standard for the wet berries because they are the bottleneck
of the operation. There are three dryers that can process 200bbl/hr, giving us a total capacity of
600bbl/hr. The implied utilization is not very realistic because it takes the 1500bbl/hr input rate and
divides it by the 600bbl/hr capacity. The actual utilization of a bottleneck is always 1.0 because it is
operating at maximum capacity. Lastly, there are three separators that have a capacity of 400bbl/hr
each, giving us a total of 1200bbl/hr. The implied utilization will be discovered as 1.25 because you
are taking the 1500bbl/hr input rate and dividing it by 1200bbl/hr capacity. The actual utilization can
be found by 600bbl/hr (wet berries) plus 375bbl/hr (dry berries) and using them as your input rate. So
you will divide the 975bbl/hr by 1200bbl/hr capacity and get .8125. 2. Enter your answer and

  • 3. Racial Profiling And Native Americans Racial Profiling and Native Americans Keith A. Kuhn Criminology 410 005 9 October 2014 Introduction When you hear the words police racial profiling your mind may automatically jump to images of white cops stopping young black men in expensive cars, the Rodney King beatings, or even the Rev. Al Sharpton giving a deposition about racial tensions. This is because those images are the hot button, go to stories that media often bombards the six o clock news with. As Americans, we have seen so much of these images that we tend to think that the racial divide is only black and white. However, what if you were to be told that racial profiling is more than just white on black? There is a group of Americans who face more racial discrimination than African Americans: Native Americans. Native Americans are under represented as victims and over persecuted as offenders. This paper will attempt to define the issue of racial profiling and how it affects Native Americans, provide a review of the current research being done, and provide a brief interview that shows how this subject is viewed in real world scenarios. Definition Racial discrimination is defined by Law.com as unequal treatment of persons, for a reason which has nothing to do with legal rights or ability. Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination in many facets of society. However, racial profiling by law enforcement is commonly defined as a practice that targets people for suspicion of crime based ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal... ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal cord (Widmaier et al. 2014). Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks, called plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of these nerve cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric (Auerbach s) plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall 2006). The nerve cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the smooth muscle of digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity in the other since some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et al. 2014). Extrinsic nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse with neurons in each of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). Though the ENS can function without these nerve pathways, the subsystems of the ANS can influence gastrointestinal activity (Guyton and Hall 2006; Widmaier et al. 2014). An example would include either inhibiting or enhancing the GI tract s motility and secretory activity through the sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers (Widmaier et al. 2014). The myenteric and submucosal plexuses each have different physiological functions. The myenteric plexus spans the length of the intestinal wall and consists of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story portrays one main conflict between Harrison Bergeron, a genius boy who is very talented, against a government that makes the entire society equal by handicapping the more gifted, down to the level of the less fortunate or incapable. Harrison constantly outgrows his tremendous handicaps faster than the government can create them and plans to overthrow the handicap government and society with his genius. If everyone was truly equal George wouldn t have been able to make a more correct reasoning than another person and choose different actions based on knowledge and reason. This just once again proves that even in a perfect society not everything is perfect. At the end of the story and at the climax the reader learns about the character Harrison Bergeron. The genius boy starts to plot to overthrow the handicapper General and her government. By escaping from jail Harrison proceeds to a TV studio to proclaim his revolt to the rest of the society. Once ripping off his handicaps and the handicaps of the rest of the people in the TV studio area, Harrison began to show the joys of having talents. Upon inspection of the food service department we have found foodborne hazard of biological, chemical, and of physical nature. The organization will note that a foodborne hazard is any biological, physical, or chemical substance that may get into food and cause harm to individuals who eat that food (Safian, 2014). Of those found to be in the biological nature include contamination of expired poultry, beef, and eggs. Upon consumption of any of these meats by partons or patient of the facility, individuals could develop salmonella poisoning, listeria, bacillus cereus, and norovirus which is the leading cause of acute epidemic gastroenteritis among children under the age of 5 years and adults in the United States and in adults worldwide, accounting for an estimated 20% of episodes of acute gastroenteritis across all ages ( Foodborne Diseases and Conditions Norovirus, 2017). Disease caused by these conditions will cause vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, fever, respiratory failure, and death. Based off of the information gathered from our inspection in regards to biological foodborne hazards, the food service department will be closed until properly brought to code and that it is my recommendation that employees in this department be terminated due to the negligence found. Upon completion of the inspection of the food services department, many physical hazards have were found, some of which according to employees have not be fixed or working properly for quite sometime. There are extreme amounts of dust covering the vents which hang above the food preparation error, four light bulbs that have gone out and judging by the amount of dust on them have been out for quite sometime. Employees adhering to the dress code in which all employees working in the food service department should wear a facility approved hat or hair net. Kingsford Charcoal Case Kingsford Charcoal Case Alex Lau Marketing Management Professor Wright 3/26/2013 Introduction Grilling is engraved in American culture as well as a highly seasonal activity. Kingsford Charcoal is in the business of selling charcoal for grills. Even though Kingsford increased its market share in 2000, their forecast indicates they will not reach the initial revenue mark. With the charcoal market s growth slowing, and the gas grill market gaining market share, Kingsford needs to revise its strategy, and their marketing mix to meet original expectations for itself and Clorox. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned before, charcoal is well in the mature stage of the product cycle in which more advertising would be optimal. Charcoal should be Kingsford s cash cow in which they can use the funds generated from them and invest it in research and development; so that they may introduce a new product preferably in the gas grilling market in the near future. As with a stagnant price increase, the same can be said of advertising from Kingsford. Their advertising budget has decreased throughout the years, while the gas grilling market has increased its advertising budget each year. MMA s analysis of 1998 spending shown that TV advertising can drive volume increase of around 7% for the current year and even a 3% to 4% increase of volume purchased in the following year. This indicates the importance of advertising. One area which is lacking for the whole charcoal category since Kingsford is the only brand that advertises at all for charcoal. Perhaps advertisements can show how charcoal grilling is the correct and tasty way to grill instead of gas grilling. Kingsford can look to do blind tastings again and publish the findings. If they look to stretch the grilling season they should look beyond just NASCAR events, but perhaps also with NFL sporting events, as well as other events and activities in which grilling is popular. They could become a sponsor in which sports can endorse them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The matching structure of NDM 1 inhibits the effectiveness of the antibiotics that share the same chemical structure. Carbapenems are relatively new antibiotics that are used to treat organisms that have mutated and developed resistances to older antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins. NDM 1 is further resistant to carbapenems because it secrets the enzyme carbapenemase. This secretion inhibits the antibiotics from synthesizing the bacteria s cell wall in order to disable the bacteria. It is concerning that NDM 1 already has a strong resistance to the more effective carbapenems. Unfortunately the life cycle for this organism is unknown as of yet. This uncertainty aids in making NDM 1 a threat to society. Once it is understood how NDM 1 bacteria are transmitted, the health threats associated with the organism can be diagnosed and treated more easily. NDM 1 is easily transmitted because it resides in the plasmids of the bacteria, which provides an ideal surface for horizontal gene transfer. Thus, NDM 1 can easily transfer from one bacterial strain to another or from one bacterial genus to another. Because the main strains of bacteria that produce NDM 1 (escherichia coli, klebsiella pneumoniae, and enterobacter cloacae) reside in the bowels if the body, the disease is often spread through fecal material. • 15. The Effect Of Sodium Chloride On The Germination Rate Of... Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to observe the effects of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) on the germination rate of Wisconsin Fast Plants. Wisconsin Fast Plants (WFPs), or Brassica rapa, are plants in the Cruciferous family, developed through selective breeding from a strain of Himalayan weeds (Williams). WFPs have a life cycle of around forty days. This short life cycle makes WFPs valuable for laboratory study. In addition, WFPs are simple to grow, as they only need water and a light source to survive (Williams). Their simple needs, allowing ease in controlling variables, make WFPs ideal for use in experiments. Germination is the stage of plant growth through which a seed becomes a seedling plant. First, the seed begins to absorb water and the radicle root emerges from the seed coat and into the water. Then, the primary roots grow, the cotyledons move above ground, the stem begins to grow, and leaves develop. The process is complete when the first leaves open and the cotyledons fall off (The Learning Garden 2001). NaCl has been shown to have a negative effect on plant growth (Lee and Van Iersal 2016) and germination (Houle et al. 2001). The severity of these effects depends on the individual species ability to grow in saline soil (Atkins et al. 2009). WFPs are part of a group of plants called glycophytes, meaning that they have a limited ability to tolerate NaCl (Atkins et al. 2009). The Soul Stays the Same in Plato I think, Socrates, he said, that on this line of argument any man, even the dullest, would agree that the soul is altogether more like that which always exists in the same state rather than like that which does not (Plato, Phaedo 79e) In this paper I will argue that the soul is not necessarily unchanging and eternal, as many of Plato s arguments would suggest otherwise. The main reasons in support of this claim are that there are questionable conclusions that Plato had reached that challenge the validity of his theory on immortal souls. The Phaedo is one of Plato s greatest dialogues addressing the essence of the afterlife through a discussion between Socrates and his students. I mean such things as good and evil, just and unjust and there are innumerable other opposites which are generated out of opposites. And I want to show that this holds universally of all opposites; I mean to say, for example, that anything which becomes greater must become greater after being less. (Plato, 70d) In the dialogue Socrates established that everything is generated from its opposite so must have an opposite. However, it is valid to question this by interpreting the opposite argument. If to say everything has an opposite, would the opposite of existence be non existence? Existence is created from non existence and non existence from existence. If this is true, than would not the existence of a soul suggest that at some point the soul did not exist? Thus, it may be that the soul had a previous existence but it does not definitively suggest that the soul is immortal and has no end. This is somewhat related to Cebes argument that that soul may have existed through many bodies but may eventually pass on. Plato fails to further explain the cycle of the soul. Socrates does not give detail on when the cycle of the soul begins or how it may have started. Furthermore, if one relies on the opposites argument for support of the immortal theory then one could consider that is there was a beginning to the cycle of the soul than there would be some sort of end. It may be easy for us to say that as children we thought they needed some assistance, but in reality that was only our imagination. As little kids did we really think about what it would be like to really have a baby? We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have a baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what life would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons why and what it really is like. The first reason why a girl can easily get pregnant is not being informed about contraceptives. There are about 1,700 school based health centers nationwide in which about โ…“ provide contraceptives. Sexual education is very important when it comes to this, there are states that still require parents to sign off their children receiving any sexual education in schools, in which many of the cases the parents and their kids are too embarrassed to talk about. Although it is the parent s responsibility to talk about it, they do not. When a teen is sexually active, it is important for them to let a parent know, so that they can get checked. In the case of Benir, there is enough evidence to prove a peaceful and continuous display of its sovereignty existed and still does, it established state control, managed good relations with the natives (through intermarriage), as they coexisted peacefully, and it was willing to protect the rights of other states in peace and in war, as well as offer for the safeguarding of the rights of non nationals residing in it, however this is an infrequent happening since the island is small in size. • 25. Of Mice And Men Quotes About Lonliness No one ever said lonliness is a great passtime, our whole is filled with it. We witness it almost everyday and are, once in a while, affected by it, but never longer than we can bear. However, many individuals during the Great Depression lived with this unbearable and inescapable lonliness, working all day and not having anyone but themselves to care for them or to care for. Jhon Stienbeck, the author of Of Mice and Men, demonstrates that too much lonliness can cause a person to live with the unbearable pain of knowing that they only have themselves, shown with Candy, Crooks, and Curley s wife Candy the old swamper showed how seniors were treated during the Great Depression, and how because they were treated differntly. He is never talked to, so he is aloof and lonely and all he ever wishes for is someone to care for him or just be near him. Another part of the novella Crooks shows lonliness is , long as you wont get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down. this quote indicates that Crooks is aloof and unfriendly to white men but, enjoys everyones company. That is because he is left all alone and never talked to, so he finds great pleassure in the smallest interaction with others. The Viewer Is The Witness In Night And Fog How the Viewer is the Witness in Night and Fog Alain Resnais Night and Fog is a Holocaust documentary shot in 1955 that served as a lens into the hellish landscape of the Holocaust. It was shot with footage of the Holocaust combined with a voiceover narration that provides a detailed look into the horrors of the Holocaust. The film proved to be a success but it struggled through censorship due to its inherent gruesome nature. This is because the film uses various techniques in such a way that the viewer of the film feel that they themselves have become witnesses of these tragedies, as opposed to just being a viewer of a documentary about the Holocaust, thus making the viewer experience of the film much more impactful. Traditional documentaries use interviews and first hand witness accounts to tell the story, but Night and Fog does not. It presents everything objectively and lets the powerful, fast paced cinematography and narration tell the story. Another technique used is the rapid juxtaposition shots from the past and present, thus giving the film a sense of timelessness. The last technique used is toward the end when the narrator asks the harrowing question whether or not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 28. The Replication Of DNA In Escherichia Coli Introduction Today s issue of Biology: Meselson and Stahl (Vol 4, 1958) includes a groundbreaking development into further understanding of DNA Replication. On pages 671 682 is an article titled The Replication of DNA in Escherichia Coli . Meselson and Stahl conducted an experiment to understand how DNA self replicates by the use of Bacterial transformation to clone parental DNA. In the article, Meselson and Stahl investigate the distribution between the parental and daughter DNA molecules. This is achieved by the use of Radio Isotopic labelling. Uniform Isotopic N15 was grown in E.coli consisting of N14 medium to observe the distribution of N15 DNA macromolecules. Within the article, the authors also discuss the problems they faced during the investigation and how significant Watsons and Cricks Double helix suggests how DNA self replicates. What is DNA? The discovery of the structure of DNA has always been associated with Watson and Crick. Their double helix structure, which they developed in 1983, has been used as a model to understand how DNA self replicates (Karp, 2009). The structure of DNA is made up of covalent bonds between 4 unique nucleotide bases. These bases bind together via complementary base pairing, therefore allowing Adenine to only bind with Thymine, and Cytosine with Guanine (Penn State, Ebery College of Science, 2016). The use of covalent bonds makes the structure strongly bound like a zipper. However, just like a zipper, it can easily open up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The general public knows that DNA is a part of our bodies but they may wonder what exactly is DNA? DNA is a term used for deoxyribonucleic acid and it is the genetic material of all organisms, it is the molecule of life and it determines all of our physical characteristics. DNA is present in every single form of life. More than 50 years after the science of genetics was established and the patterns of inheritance were clarified, the largest questions remained unanswered: How are the chromosomes and their genes copied exactly from cell to cell, and how do they direct the structure and behavior of living things? Two American geneticists, George ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To make a new, identical copy of the DNA molecule, the two strands unwind and separate at the bases which are weakly bound; with more nucleotides available in the cell, new complementary bases can link with each separated strand, and two double helixes result. (Caldwell) Since the backbone of every chromosome is a single long, double stranded molecule of DNA, the production of two identical double helixes will result in the production of two identical chromosomes. The DNA backbone is actually longer than the chromosome but is tightly coiled up within it. This packing is now known to be based on minute particles of protein known as nucleosomes, that can only be seen under the most powerful electron microscope. The DNA is wound around each nucleosome to form a beaded structure. The structure is then further folded so that the beads associate in regular coils. Thus, the DNA has a coiled coil configuration. After the discoveries of Watson and Crick, the question that remained was how the DNA directs the formation of proteins, compounds central to all the processes of life. Proteins are not only the major components of most cell structures, they also control virtually all the chemical reactions that occur in living matter. The ability of a protein to act as part of a structure, or as an enzyme affecting the rate of a particular chemical reaction, depends on its molecular shape. This shape, in turn, ... In the three and a half years He ministered, He performed and accomplished astonishing feats. He healed hundreds of incurable diseases, provided food for thousands extraordinarily, calmed storms suddenly, walked on water confidently, brought people back to life, and selected just a dozen men, eleven of whom would go on to spend the rest of their lives fulfilling His mission. He selected hard working people such as fishermen to be His apprentices, and helped and ate with regular people. He challenged and condemned religious leaders, who resented and despised Him. He taught in Jerusalem, the cities of Judea, out in the rural areas, in meadows, on mounds, and from boats in the water while multitudes attended attentively from the shore. The moral philosophy Singer conveys in this text are most closely related and comparable to the ideas of nineteenth century English philosopher, John Stuart Mill as Singers approach is utilitarian rather than deontological. Despite their similarities, the ideas of Singer and J.S Mill contain many discrepancies, especially with regard to whether they lean towards act utilitarianism or rule utilitarianism. Although Singer and Mill both adhere to a consequentialist theory as their moral philosophy, Singer upholds a more socialistic view and focuses on maximizing the happiness of a community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From there, he further adds a weaker version of the second principle as he subsites something of roughly equal moral importance for something of moral significance (506). He provides an example for this weaker principle, which is as follows: if one is in a position to save a child drowning in a pond, one should do so even though one might get their clothes muddy as that is not a morally significant cost and the child s death would be an extremely morally bad state of affairs (506). There is potentially a third premise, which is that we can not only prevent, but alleviate this poverty induced suffering, without sacrificing something of comparable moral importance. Following the premises, Singer presents his conclusion, which is that we ought to contribute as much as we can to the eradication of poverty, until doing so harms us more than it benefits them. In other words, we should give to the extent that if we were to give more, we would cause ourselves as much suffering as we are preventing from someone else. As mentioned, while Singer s moral philosophy is most closely related to utilitarianism, there are differences between his theory and Mill s. Unlike Singer, whose assertion although not entirely, likely holds better under Benthamite act utilitarianism, Mill s theory is instead linked to rule utilitarianism. Singer ... Switching to the Wet Berries, we see that there are two Dechaffers that can each store up to 1500bbl/hr, which will add up to a capacity of 3000bbl/hr. We can calculate the implied utilization of the wet berry Dechaffer by dividing the input rate (1500bbl/hr) by the capacity (3000bbl/hr) and the actual utilization by dividing the Flow Rate (600bbl/hr) by the capacity (3000bbl/hr). The Dryers set the standard for the wet berries because they are the bottleneck of the operation. There are three dryers that can process 200bbl/hr, giving us a total capacity of 600bbl/hr. The implied utilization is not very realistic because it takes the 1500bbl/hr input rate and divides it by the 600bbl/hr capacity. The actual utilization of a bottleneck is always 1.0 because it is operating at maximum capacity. Lastly, there are three separators that have a capacity of 400bbl/hr each, giving us a total of 1200bbl/hr. The implied utilization will be discovered as 1.25 because you are taking the 1500bbl/hr input rate and dividing it by 1200bbl/hr capacity. The actual utilization can be found by 600bbl/hr (wet berries) plus 375bbl/hr (dry berries) and using them as your input rate.
