Peace Like A River Courage Analysis
One of the most needed human traits is courage. The book, Peace Like A River by Leif Enger,
displays many types of courage throughout the book and we can learn from them...of why
courage is important. Courage is an important trait to have because we learn from it, gain new
things, and it s helping others in need. The first reason of why courage is important is because it
can be learned from. How courage is connected with learning is because people with courage and
bravery learn from the mistakes that they took on. Why, yes sir, I told Elvis. He asked Dad a
question. He said, How many times you let the dog bite you, before you put him down? And the
court did not erupt, nor the jury gasp in wonder at that revelation; only Elvis s eyebrows... Show

In Peace Like A River, Reuben displays lots of courage when trying to shoot down a bird for the
second time... Blind with despair I fired again. The goose had to be out of range; yet somehow it
shuddered, went graceless, and made a controlled fall to the ground, some eighty yards away.
(7). Even through Reuben wasn t confident of shooting down a bird and had failed the first time,
he didn t give up and shot again, and got the bird he was shooting for. This takes immense
courage to face and go through, especially when it s something a person loves to do and to learn
about. Also, in another part of the book, Reuben gets his reward of helping someone else, He
pulled out two ten dollar bills and a five and said, You done a good job, then patted another
pocket and came out with two chocolate bars. (119). This was earned by the courage and hard
work that Reuben did to earn some money and chocolate bars. By doing something good and
trying hard; which takes courage; a person, in this case, Reuben, will earn more especially if they
work really hard and quickly. This is shown because the man that Reuben was working for, gave

Oropharyngeal Airway
Respiratory emergencies can be caused by obstructions, inflammations, trauma, and several
different disease processes. The most common obstruction of the airway is the tongue. This
usually occurs when the patient has become unconscious secondary to another cause such as
intoxication, low blood sugar, or trauma. While tongue obstruction of the airway can have deadly
results, it can be easily solved by re positioning the airway using the either the jaw thrust maneuver
if trauma is suspected, or the head tilt chin lift if no trauma is suspected. Also if the patient is
unconscious and has no gag reflex you can use an oropharyngeal airway to hold the tongue up and
out of the airway. However, using an oropharyngeal airway does not mean that you can... Show

Other times severe trauma can cause pulmonary edema such as blood in the lungs. Patients who
are unresponsive for various reasons such as cardiac arrest, alcohol intoxication, or low blood
sugar can aspirate stomach contents due to the loss of their ability to protect their own airway.
Aspiration can severely impede the alveoli s ability to exchange gases. The patient can suffocate
if action is not taken promptly. The aspiration may also cause pneumonia or other types of
infections that can be potentially deadly for the patient. This is one of the reasons why
managing and controlling n unconscious patient s airway is so crucial during pre hospital care.
Another critical respiratory emergency is a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can be
caused by a blood clot, by an air bubble, by a large foreign body in the circulatory system such as
a catheter shear, or in rare cases by amniotic fluid in pregnant females. Whatever the cause of the
embolism, the results can have the same deadly consequences. Most blood clots that become
pulmonary embolisms originate in the legs of patients with poor circulation of some type of leg

A Personalized Sergei Bodrov
A role in a movie is like a mirror that reflects an actor s personality. Some actors are capable of
playing certain roles but not others. If an actor can feel the role, he or she will play it naturally,
as it would resemble his or her life. Actors put their heart into playing, which gives them the
model. Through a role an actor connects to the audience who makes the final decision about the
movie s purpose; that is why it is very important to show this purpose correctly by playing it
sincerely. Personalization is a significant factor that can lead to the success or failure of a film.
Sergei Bodrov Jr was a leading actor in several movies during the late 1990s and early 2000s, he

exams to make sure he is physically fit for the military. In the Chechen Republic, Vanya and
another Sgt. Kostylin are injured in the explosion of a personnel carrier after which they are to
be taken hostage. This is just the beginning of the story that will become legendary for Sergei
Bodrov. Vanya has to go through many challenges that shake his inner stability. First, he meets
Hasan, his guard, who cannot speak because his tongue is torn out. Second, he is shackled with
leg shackles to Kostylin, the other Russian soldier held hostage. The situation of insecurity and
absence of freedom makes the character alert and ready to stay alive by helping others. For
example, Vanya fixed clocks for some Chechens. After time has passed, the prisoners Vanya and
Kostylin are forced to leave the house of Abdul Murat since Chechen fighters want them to work
for them. The captives work finding mines for the Chechen as guinea pigs to clear a road for the
others to pass. However, the prisoners survive the work zones and come back to the house of
Abdul Murat. The director of the movie increases the tragedy by letting Vanya s mother know about
the hostage situation. Her tears and pleads to Abdul Murat do not change his decision do her son.

Why Guns Should Be Illegal Essay
The United States has issues with guns. We need better gun control so these killings stop
happening and innocent young or older lives stop getting taken away too soon. Did you know that
in addition to the Las Vegas Strip massacre in Nevada where 58 people died and 851 were injured,
there have been a staggering 97 mass shootings since 1982. Stephen Paddock fired more than 1,100
rounds that night. It is known as the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the
United States. With the recent mass shooting which occurred at Stoneman Douglas High School
in Parkland, Florida, 17 people were killed and 17 more were injured by bullets making it the
number one deadliest school massacre in the U.S.. Nikolas Cruz is only 19 with known mental

My Personal Life Goals
Have you ever woken up one morning and asked yourself, What am I doing with my life? This
happened to me one day, and I quickly realized I have lost sight of my goals. Goals help you set
a road map for your life, to accomplish things that are special to you and will help you move
through life. They can be as simple as: wanting to improve your car, maintaining a healthy lifestyle,
or on the long term end: wanting to graduate college with a degree in accounting. My first goal,
would be to improve my clunker car, which is something I have always owned my entire life. A
clunker car is usually an older model car that is not in the best condition. Instead of getting a
brand new car, which is expensive, it is cheaper just to fix the little problems in the car. Which can
be made up into smaller goals because they are easier to achieve one at a time. For example, right
now there are no sunvisors in my car because the ones I currently have will not stay in the upright
position, instead they move around and will not stay still. Replacing my old sun visors with
new ones would be extremely helpful on those hot sunny summer days to block the sun and they
will stay in their place when you don t need to use them. Secondly, there is a cassette radio player
in my car. Cassettes are very hard to find nowadays, everything is on cds or you can stream music
with your cell phone and play it through the car speakers. To be able to have a cd player would
mean no longer to have to fast

Examples Of The Crucible And The Columbine Shootings
We Cannot (E)scapegoat What Happened The mainstream media is constantly being blamed for
crimes that people themselves commit. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing
in the woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly
religious society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine
shooting was a tragic event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors
committing the crime killed themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified
public to blame the incident on the media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and
the Columbine shootings are similar in people standing up for incoherent children and deaths
for selfish reasons, they are also very different. Children in high school were killed in the
Columbine shooting while adults were killed in The Crucible and the who was targeted. A
scapegoat, by definition is, A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of
others, especially for reasons of expediency (Oxford dictionary). The Crucible is easily one of
the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town was completely prepared to blame witches for
the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed Marilyn Manson, a man known for his
outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students murdered 12 teachers and students
in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed suicide before
incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public standing up for
incoherent children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these stories.
People were killed because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these kids
were calling out. The two criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts.
Dylan Klebold, one of the two seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit
suicide. They had gotten arrested previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that
year trying to convince everyone they were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as
well. Eric Harris wrote in his journal, You know what I hate? Star Wars fans: get a friggin life, you

Food Safety Practices By Consumers, New Zealand
Summary This study identifies that costs of food safety are high in the developed world, and
consumer awareness on food safety practices is lacking especially in younger consumers. The
explosion of ever increasing fast food chains and poor food eating practices by Consumers, New
Zealanders increasingly are getting affected by Obesity and diseases such as Diabetes.
According to the World Health Organisation, New Zealand has an Obesity rate of 27% (who.int,
2008) and is ranked the 12th most overweight country in the world (nzherald.co.nz, 2013).
225,000 kiwis also have either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes (diabetes.org.nz, 2012). It can be
argued that because of the increases in rates of Diabetes and Obesity, consumers are scared of
the impacts to their health and wellbeing as they grow older and are increasingly becoming more
health conscious in the choices they make for food consumption. In the US, 64% of Consumers
now agree that it s important to eat healthy foods compared to 57% in 2010 (newhope360.com,
2013). As consumers become more health conscious, food producers and sellers look to take
advantage of this to promote and sell their food in new and different ways that might be perceived
as healthier options. One such method that is changing consumer food preference is the emergence
of local Weekend Food Markets as a hip and trendy way to sell food to consumers versus traditional
retail avenues such as supermarkets and grocery stores. Consumers arguably favour these

Artificial Sentience Essay
The use of computers has pervaded the life of every human being. At every street corner there are
machines to be found that have been designed to simplify our lives and take over the mundane jobs
that no longer require human intervention. One only needs to think of automated teller machines
replacing bank tellers, vending machines phasing out street vendors, or near infallible CCTV
watching over us as policemen and sheriffs once did, to realise the extent that technology has
enhanced and improved our existence. Given the speed and effectiveness with which computer
technology has become a regular part of our lives, it is not surprising that there is much speculation
about the future implications of these developments. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The question of consciousness In order to determine whether it is possible to compute
consciousness, it is first necessary to define consciousness. This in itself is something that
scientists and philosophers have struggled with for ages. For the purposes of this paper, the
definition proposed by [Searle, 1998] will be used: Consciousness consists of inner, qualitative,
subjective states and processes of sentience or awareness. Consciousness, so defined, begins
when we wake in the morning from a dreamless sleep and continues until we fall asleep again,
die, go into a coma or otherwise become unconscious. The difficulty with this definition with
regards to the Turing computability of consciousness is that it defines the existence of a subjective
state as a prerequisite for consciousness. According to Searle s Chinese room argument [Searle,
1980], the fact that a system produces the same output as a conscious mind would in response to
the same input does not prove the presence of subjective consciousness. However, this same
argument can be used in favour of solipsist views; it cannot be proven that anyone in this world is
truly conscious merely by virtue of acting in ways that suggest consciousness. It is therefore a moot
point. As [Turing, 1950] put it: [I]nstead of arguing continually over this point, it is usual to have a
polite convention that everyone thinks. If the

Charlie Fish Use Of Foreshadowing In Death By Scrabble
Charlie Fish s story Death by Scrabble is a suspenseful story about how much a husband wanted to
kill his wife. Fish uses foreshadowing, red herring, and sensory imagery in his story. The use of
these Art of Suspense techniques can inspire readers to continue to the end, wondering what will
happen next.
Foreshadowing is a common technique used in stories, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In the
story, Death by Scrabble, the author makes it that for every word played in the game, the word,
in a way, comes true. When the husband plays ZAP, his wife gets an electric shock. As well as
when he plays EXPLODES, the air conditioning unit explode[d] (Fish 2). The author hints that the
wife is aware of what her husband is planning when she plays CAUTION as one of her words.
When Fish writes about how much the husband wants to kill his wife, he writes: Maybe I should
kill her, if only I had a D, then I could play MURDER (Fish 1). This leads us, the readers, to
believe that the husband wants to kill his wife and is, in some way, excited to do so. ... Show more

Julius Rosenberg Research Paper
As a child, I remember my relatives offering me a piece of gum and ending up finding out that it
was a shocking toy! Surprisingly, Ouch!, I said. Comparing that shock to an electric chair, could
you imagine the pain? In 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who shared the same admiration for the
Communist party, were both executed with an electric chair. Due to their involvement with the
Soviet Union and transferring information from their connections during World War II, they were
caught and executed. One hundred years ago, Julius Rosenberg was born in New York City. His
parents immigrated from Russia. He was so fascinated by politics that he joined the Young
Communist League as a teenager. When he attended college, he studied electrical engineering and
soon after became an engineer for the United StatesArmy. Three years before Julius was born,
Ethel was born on 1915. Being a part of many theater shows at her school, she always appreciated

How Does Andrew Lloyd Webber Use The Mask In The Phantom...
In the online dictionary, masks are described as being a covering for all or part of the face, worn
to conceal one s identity . Andrew Lloyd Webber utilizes masks in The Phantom of the Opera, in
such a way that really captivates the viewers and helps to highlight and hide certain aspects. Not
only does he use the maskto shield the Phantom s deformation, he also shows what kind of person
the Phantom is with and without the mask, including his behaviour, and actions towards others.
Webber uses masks in many different ways in the play, The Phantom of the Opera. One of the
ways that he uses them is with the characters. Every character in the play wears some kind of
mask. Whether it s just stage makeup, a wig, beard, or a moustache, they all ... Show more content

Beginning with vulnerability, it is obvious that the Phantom is much more defenseless, and
much less powerful without the mask on. When Christine removes the mask without his
permission, he responds very angrily, saying, Damn you! You little prying Pandora! You little
demon...Curse you! You little lying Delilah! You little viper! In doing so, he demonstrates a
much more aggressive and contentious persona towards her. In the midst of cursing and yelling
at her, Erik threw her down, forcefully, after she removed his mask. It is evident that from the
above actions displayed by the Phantom, he doesn t approbate the removal of the mask without
his permission. Another gauge of his behaviour because of the mask, is hidden deep within his
self image. Here, we are able to find out what he actually thinks of himself. Erik portrays himself
as ...a loathsome gargoyle, who burns in hell but secretly yearns for heaven... this repulsive
carcass, who seems a beast, but secretly dreams of beauty . Similarly, he also doesn t want
anyone to know what he really looks like. After Christine removed the mask, the Phantom said, Is
that what you wanted to see?...Now you cannot ever be free! This goes to show that Erik doesn t
have very a ample self esteem, and does not wish for anyone to witness his true appearance.

BACKGROUND
The Niger Delta produces the oil wealth which accounts for the bulk of Nigeria s foreign
earnings. Paradoxically however, these vast revenues from an international industry have barely
touched the Niger Delta s own pervasive local poverty (UNDP, 2006:1). The majority of the
population in the rural areas in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria are living in extreme poverty in

Over time, the effects of oil and gas exploration on the environment have become a cause of concern
to stakeholders, government, NGOs communities and individuals. This has led the government to
formulate various policies to arrest the situation and thus promote sustainable exploration activities.
Unfortunately, most of these programs have not yielded the desired results (Guardian Newspaper
2006: 16).
The rural populace in the Niger Delta mainly practice fishing and subsistence farming, but during
floods, which lasts for over half of the year in some areas the waters are usually contaminated which
negatively affects marine life; with the waters unable to sustain vegetation due to petroleum
hydrocarbon pollutants. Drinking water is scarce and in the dry season, water is usually not
available which also increases the risk of water borne diseases. The inhabitants of the area also
experience scorching heat daily from gas flaring which is also detrimental to the health of the
people (Chukwuezi, 2006:4).
The major problems of the Niger Delta Region mentioned above can be summarized as follows:
Poverty
Poverty has been described as the inability of a person to meet basic needs such as food, shelter,
clothing, healthcare and education. The poverty situation in the Niger Delta region is perhaps the
worst in Nigeria today. It also results in poor

Democracy And Politics Of South Korea

Democracy and Politics in South Korea
Democracy that means the rule of people has been used as a political system since Ancient Greece.
Even though its concept has changed as time goes by, it is still regarded as one of the best political
systems and used in many countries. Unfortunately, most Asian countries did not use this political
system until the middle of the 20th century, so they have a very short history compared with
western countries. Because of that, Asia has had some troubles. For example, Park and Shin (2006)
said that many countries have had military dictatorship which is a common government for a
developing country. A developing country, above all, might want to develop their economy, so
they endure dictatorship because the dictator can make a decision easily and quickly (Park, C. D.
Shin, D., 2006). It also happened in South Korea 50 years ago. In spite of military dictatorship in
the past, South Korea has the most successfully established democracy in Asia (Whitehead, L.,
2002).
There is a special history of democracy in South Korea. Democracy was accepted in 1945 in
South Korea because South Korea achieved independence from Japan. Right after independence of
Korea from Japan, they were divided into two countries; North and South Korea. South Korea
founded and developed a democratic government. However, democracy could not be preserved
because a military general, Junghee Park, accomplished the

Plagiarism And Academic Writing
Nowadays, plagiarism has become a widespread problem in academic writing. A survey conducted
by Donald McCabe, revealed that 36% of 63700 surveyed undergraduate students admitted to
paraphrasing/copying few sentences from the internet source without footnoting it (qtd in Facts and
Stats ). Two schools in North America, George Brown College and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) are quite strict about plagiarism. Even though each school have roughly similar
definitions of plagiarism, they differ in the procedure they apply as well as the focus of their
policies.
For both schools, plagiarism is defined as the lack of respect for academic integrity. George
Brown s Student Code of Conduct and Discipline defines plagiarism as the act of quoting,
paraphrasing or expressing an idea that was articulated by someone else from a text or paper
without identification as to source (5). The MIT s document Academic Integrity defines plagiarism
as the use of someone s words, idea, data, etc, without the acknowledgement of having done so (5).
Based on their definitions, it is clear that both schools consider plagiarism as a severe academic
honesty offence that deserves to be punished.
On the other hand, George Brown applies a shorter and briefer punishment procedure than the MIT.
George Brown applies a direct punishment to the offence committed meanwhile the MIT applies a
process that is based on 3stages. The Student Code of George Brown states that the College will

The strength of Harley Davidson s brand and dominant market position give the firm a wide moat,

The firm has already cut production in an attempt to trim costs in line with faling demand. in
addition, just over half of Harley s motorcycle revenues are derived from retail sales made on
credit. We think that the lack of available funds on the wholesale markets and the shrinking of the
number of qualifying customers will make it difficult for the company s financial services division

Harley must address some long term challenges. The firm has been focused on a narrow

has been on a long term upward trend.
We believe that the firm must find ways to broaden the appeal of its brand without alienating its

European Imperialism In British India
The works of Thomas Metcalf, T.W. Roberts, Daniel Headrick, and other notable historians explore
the development of the European imperial project through the use of architecture, technology, and
medicine. These technologies become the machines and driving force of imperialism and are used
to retain control over colonial regions. Headrick argues that these sciences provide the means to the
motives behind the imperialist powers who are working to keep their territorial subjects subdued to
their will. Without the means of technology, the motive can never be achieved, and the constructed
empires are inevitably doomed to failure. Along with the means of technology, the invention, use,
and implantation of these technologies also reflect the broader political and social trends of the
empires. Architecture, technology, and medicine showcase the changes in imperial policies,
ideologies and overarching view of the empireitself. (Present or Past Tense)
Metcalf s analysis of architecture in British India shows how a combination of cultures becomes
essential in designing an empire that reflected both the colonizer and the subjects. After the Sepoy
Mutiny of 1857, British officials realized that a serious reassessment of Indian culture was
necessary for Britain to remain the colonial power. Metcalf explores the construction of the Mayo
College and the architectural debates that came with building it. The formation and science behind
the architecture are essential to empire building

A Midwife s Tale Sparknotes
Laurel Ulrich s A Midwife s Tale
Before I watched A Midwife s Tale , a movie created from the diary found by Laurel Ulrich
chronicling the life of a woman named Martha Ballard, I thought the women in these times were
just housewives and nothing else. I pictured them doing the cleaning and the cooking for their
husbands and not being very smart because of the lack of education or them being unable to work.
My view on the subject changed however when I watched this specific woman s life and her work.
To know that there was a woman such as Martha back in those days is very interesting to me
because I especially did not think there were women who were as brave and independent as she
was. The lives of women in general, not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What I thought was weird is, in the movie, Martha asks the mother in labor who the father of the
baby is and that?s how they did paternity tests which seems so strange but it was the only way at
the time, I guess. She probably wasn?t happy when the spinster girl that worked at her house, in
the movie, said her son?s name during that crucial moment. After a hard day like this she got to go
home and clean her house and cook food, I can just imagine how fun this was.
The incident in the movie when I found out that the minister?s wife was pregnant by one of the
men who gang raped her amazed me because I didn?t know things like that happened back then.
And it was sad because she couldn?t really do anything about it because of the fact, like I said
before, the cards stacked in the men?s favor. Also, she was not able to prove the father of the
baby even though she thought it was North, there was still no way to make sure of it. This is
another thing that confirms that the women of this time were strong people, especially all the
other women who had to go through things like she had to. Martha Ballard also had endure a lot
of hard times as she got older. She couldn?t do the things she used to be able to do when she was
younger and probably more healthier. When her husband was put in jail for not collecting

The Importance Of Gross National Happiness
Before I proceed into the depths of my presentation today, I want you as people to think about
the following questions. Focusing solely on yourself as a productive member of society rather
than a businessman. Have you ever wondered why your favourite park is demolished to peices in
order to build houses or expand roadways? Have you ever felt that your volunteer work is not
appreciated or valued anymore? Have you ever felt that your most productive days in the
workplace come from a foundation of happiness. Hello, my name is Shelby Ward and I am here to
present my findings of why Gross National Happiness is a superior and more effective way to
measure a Country s overall well being.
Currently, the widely accepted measurement of the economic success of a country is found solely
in a number. A country s Gross Domestic Productor GDP. GDP follows the interaction of goods
and services with regards to their production and consumption. By measuring consumer,
government and industry spending along with the balance of trade, the GDP is a reliable indicator
of economic health. Many economists suggest that this is the only way to measure, however as
reliable as it is, GDP only measures one thing Money. For many, an economy s health is determined
by several factors. Simply put, there are more important things to consider like happiness, for
example.
First off. Gross Domestic Product is solely and number and speaks nothing about citizens overall
well being. GDP awards events

The narrative Water Margin establishes Wu Sung as a complicated, multifaceted character who
encompasses a combination of heroism and violence. Due to his complex personality and the
corruptive environment he lives in, Wu Sung cannot remain as a member of the civilized society;
instead, he enters Jiang Hu, a realm that is governed by people s own judgments instead of standard
laws. Beginning with Wu Sung s first appearance, the author constantly provides hints that depict

As the text continues, Wu Sung s interaction with the innkeeper confirms the abusive thoughts
Wu Sung carries within him. When the innkeeper convinces Wu Sung to stop drinking, Wu
Sung responds, Do not provoke me to anger or I shall smash the whole room into atoms, and turn
your inn upside down (305). If any other characters make such statement, the reader might take it
as an empty threat. However, after learning about Wu Sung s background and extraordinary
strength, the reader understands that Wu Sung would carry out such actions if his desires are
not satisfied. This interaction is also thought provoking because it happens one day after Wu
Sung left Sung Chiang. Thus, the author seems to convey the message that Wu Sung would
always be a wild man because the positive impacts others have on him would always gradually
leave him. Therefore, despite how Wu Sung later courageously kills the tiger and generously
gives his rewards to others, there is a part of him that resembles the tiger he kills, the brutality
that makes him different from everyone else. The author also depicted Wu Sung as an outsider
who stays in a society but is not a member of the society. When Wu Sung kills his sister in law,
Mrs. Wu, despite the murderous acts Mrs. Wu committed, her gruesome death is still a striking
scene. The author spends great details on this particular scene, The [Wu Sung] stooped down, and

The Culture Of Ancient Rome
The culture of ancient Rome existed throughout its nearly 1200 year history. It refers to the culture
of the Roman Republic, later known as the Roman Empire, which at its prime covered a large area
from Lowland Scotland and Morocco to the Euphrates. Life in ancient Rome was centered around
the city of Romewith its famed seven hills, and its monumental architecture. The city of Rome was
the largest megalopolis of its time, with a population that might well have exceeded one million
people. The center of the early social structure, dating back from the time of the agricultural tribal
city state, was the family, which was not only marked by blood relations but also by the legally
constructed relation of patria potestas. Schooling in a more formal

Many people say that political leaders must be held to higher standards and speak nothing but the

Amt Case Analysis Essay
1. What has created the need for additional finance by AMT since 1983? The need for additional
financing is a result of multiple factors that placed intense pressure on available cash. The first
factor is the extraordinary growth AMT has experienced the last few years with an annual sales
growth rate of 52.88%. The extreme growth rate in sales was accompanied with heavy spending on
research and development along with rapid expansion in the company s sales force and other
marketing expenditures. What made matters worse is the company has incurred operating losses,
which meant that generating cash from operations was at best limited or insufficient. The second
major factor is the inefficient use or mismanagement of some of the... Show more content on

Accounts Payable Days and Accrued Expenses also play a critical role. Days Payable is set at 50
while Accrued Expenses is assumed to be 5% of Sales. Cash as a percent of sales is set at 7.5%.
Going forward, and assuming 7.5% ratio, which is very similar to the industry upper quartile in
1985, cash balances at AMT will remains solid going forward. Note that the industry s cash to
sales ratio is not given directly but can be deducted by taking the Cash to Assets ratio of 16.3%
(1985) and Assets to Sales ratio of 45.3% (Upper Quartile in 1985). Reshuffling these figures
yields the industry s Cash to Sales of 7.4%. All these assumptions about net working capital result
in tremendous need for external financing over the next several years as mentioned earlier. Annual
Sales growth is expected to be at high rate 30% over the next 5 years, which puts tremendous
pressure on cash. Poor management of working capital will unnecessarily tie up cash, thus
requiring external financing from banks such as Western National Bank. Looking at cash to sales
ratio, the historical trend for AMT is very much disturbing with the last two years having negative
cash balances. With the 7.5% ratio of cash to net sales, cash balances, when managed efficiently,
will remain at healthy levels over the next 5 years. The above discussion shows that high growth in
sales, which is typically accompanied with high growth in working capital exerts tremendous

Relationships Between Friendliness And Hostility And...
Abstract
In this study, we looked at the relationships between friendliness and hostility and agreeableness in
college students. We hypothesized that students who were high in friendliness would also be high
in agreeableness, while being low in hostility. We expected a strong correlation with agreeableness,
and a slightly strong correlation with hostility. However, when looking at all three traits we found
that agreeableness, while being the big umbrella it is, might not fully account for traits underneath
it. As well as friendliness and hostility having a stronger negative correlation than we anticipated.
Keywords: Friendliness, Hostility, Agreeableness, Personality
Friendliness in College age Students In this study we aimed to look at the personality trait of
friendliness. Friendliness can be defined as the good nature, amiability of one s personality. In
other words: how agreeable and outgoing one is towards others. Friendliness has been found to
be more prevalent in females than males (Moskowitz, 1993), and has been found to be generalized
across situations. In this research we want to look at college students to see if there is any
significance between friendliness and aggressiveness. To do this we have created our own
friendliness scale and compared it to the Iowa State Hostility Scale (Dill, Anderson, Anderson,
Deuser, 1997) and the agreeableness items from the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) (Gosling,
Augustine, Vazire, Holtzman, Gaddis, 2011).

Auguste Rodin s Works
The Thinker: Auguste Rodin sculpted the Thinker between 1881 and 1919. The original thinker
is currently located in MusГ©e Rodin, which is located in Paris, France. The Thinker, originally
constructed to represent Dante Degli Alighieri pondering his famous poem, The Divine
Comedy, was made to be on top of the compositional piece Rodin created as an entranceway for
the MusГ©e des Arts DГ©coratifs. This piece, known as The Gates of Hell, is based on Dante s

The Poet; however, as the piece began to gain precedence over The Gates of Hell, its name was

onwards, which was a time of political and social turmoil. As a result of The Gates of Hell,
Rodin s most famous works would appear to the public. These pieces include The Kiss, The Age

The Disappearance Of Childhood By Neil Postman
Even though childhood has change for the better there is an argument stating that childhood is
disappearing at a dazzling speed (Postman, 1996) says that there is a closing gap between
childhood and adulthood. Neil Postman (1996) claims this in his book The Disappearance of
Childhood . Postman theory was purely based on the way that communications through
technology were made which shapes society today. He thinks that due to the technology such as
television and the Internet children nowadays are much likely to have more access to the adult
world , thus childhood to be disappearing (Postman, 1982). He claims its Frankenstein Syndrome
consequence of the mass media is mainly the responsible for the usage of television, and the
social media. Palmer (2007) parallels this study with Postman (1982) and thinks that parents tend
to use technology such as television and electronic games to keep their children occupied and to
be quiet due to their busyness or maybe too preoccupied by consumerism to give the children the
traditional childhood. The book makes durable case for the traditional values and through her
study has noticed that children need to develop skills such as developing their focus. She also
recommends real food rather the ones high in sugar and more fish oil, eaten at family meals.
Another study has also been made by Pugh (2002) he proposes that parents that spends time with

Why would did Rushkoff put this section where he did? I think this decision was important
because it focuses on how our currency system works and how it was originated. This section of
the text really changes how money should be perceived and how we as a society has changed.
Rushkoff evaluates the origin of our currency and basically says it s out of date. As our
economy has shifted to increasingly more digital networks, our currency has been devalued.
Rushkoff says, the money we use today central, bank issued currency is an artifact of the late
middle ages (116). While this system of currency has worked well, we need to shift to our digital
stage in order to continue functioning. The time based rules of money work quite well in an
expansionist Industrial Age, (as long as we ignore the impact on crafts people, local economies,
and, of course slave populations), but they no longer seem to function properly in a digital
economy (117). Rushkoff says that because as times change, and we switch to almost all digital
transactions, our value and use of real currency also needs to change. You can t have something
lagging behind the other in society, it doesn t work that way. And Rushkoff wants his audience to
know that. He wants these big CEO s to be warry of perhaps a major shift in the use of currency.
He wants them to know because large business corporations are what keep society

Is there a link between creativity and mental disorder? The topic of mental illness and creative
ability has been documented for years and is still being researched today. Touched with Fire by Kay

Creativity and Madness by Albert Rothenberg, All of these authors have their Ph. D. in psychology
or a related field and have done in depth research on mental illness relating to the artist
temperament. This research focuses on the artist s background and symptom of both the manic and

Dickenson writes manic and depressive extremes beyond anything I ve ever read, lyrically,
memorably, formally, reaching some of the highest highs and the lowest lows. She spend most
of her life secluded from the world, she wrote hundreds of poems and was able to capture
extreme emotional states in some of her greatest works. Dickinson used her poetry as a method
of communicating her emotional distress or happiness. Some of poetry speaks of death and
morality, which would clearly point to a state of depression. When Dickenson was 53 she wrote,
The Physician says I have nervous prostration, but I do not know the name of this sickness.
Nervous prostration, at that time, was identified as an illness characterized by anxiety and
depression. In addition, her illness may have been the end result of earlier documented panic
attacks and agoraphobia. She used her writings as a way to express how she was feeling and what
she experienced. I believe she use her poem to describe her experiences of this disorder, and what it

The Persuader
I was once scammed online, by a scammer who I was trying to buy a limited edition virtual card.
The thing is when a victim is scammed the first thing he/she would do is blaming the scammer.
However, whose fault is it, the persuader or the victim? In order for persuaders to be able to win
they must gain people s trust, desire and belief. I believe in processes of gaining those things,
persuaders usually lie about certain things to be able to benefit themselves. Who is it to blame if

Of course it is also the victim s fault for being naГЇve and credible. However, I think if you are
conned into giving someone $3000 is a crime freely. For example, some people fake as doctors
to scam people. They might say something like I could cure your mother s breasts cancer by
prayer of course it sounds stupid, but with the desire of the victim, they are likely to be less
aware and more credible. The responsibility should be the person who didn t deliver his/her
promises. In this case, I believe the persuader is the one responsibility for this case because he is
faking/lying who he is and what he promises by faking his identity and could be ruining someone
life, happiness and hope. However, I also think the victim should educate themselves or think
carefully before trusting. Con artists who prey and victimize others should undoubtedly be
punished, but we should encourage people to educate themselves so as to make these crimes.
On the other hand salesman who successfully convinces you into buying something is a very
similar case, however I think they are less of a crime, because they are not completely faking it,
at least they are promising the possible outcome like the protein powder. In this case I think the
fault should be more towards the victims because I believe they should know that some
salesmen don t even know their products so they lie and exaggerate about their products. Also,
they are playing with your brain and your desire. Most salesmen only care about money, which is
why they are trying to persuade you. I think victims should educate themselves more because if
their products is really good, they wouldn t even need to come to you and persuade to sell. In
cases where both victims and persuaders are wrong is something like a teacher offers his/her

How National Culture Has On How Individuals Share...
Knowledge Dissemination can be improved by enabling employees talk to face which helps
learning information faster. Also, documenting the details helps to access information in the future.
This is because not all the tacit knowledge can be transferred, so it is better to transfer it in wiki or
other storage media. Another way is communicating with employees so that they can also retain the
information and use it in future.
Question 3:
Given the effects that national culture has on how individuals share knowledge with others, discuss
what strategies to increase the effectiveness of multinational teams that have to work together. For
example, are there any technologies that you might use?

It primarily consist of using data centers, wiki sites and intranet. This allows firms to share the
work of an individual with other team members, so they can benefit too. This will save time and
money which otherwise would have been spent. Also, team members who are geographically
dispersed can also have access saving huge travel costs and potential language barriers. Thus this
method turns tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. The benefits are it achieves scale in
knowledge reuse but the cost are that fails to tap into tacit knowledge
Secondly, practice approach does not focus on strict methods or formal procedures, rather they
believe in using mutual interactions because not all tacit knowledge can be precisely stored using
technology. Additionally, by sharing tacit knowledge with team members, they will learn the same
tactics and knowledge and apply when similar problems arise. This will be a quicker way to share
knowledge since it involves two way communication. The members can resolve their doubts
immediately. As a result, it fosters new ideas being brought in from various cultures which is also
beneficial.

Evidence for the Biblical Flood
And God said to Noah, I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with
violence through them. Behold, I will destroy the earth. Make yourself an ark... (Genesis 6:13

destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall

into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. (Genesis 6:19, ESV)

(1995 2013) Finally, many evolutionists use the Grand Canyon as proof for millions of years, but
evidence shows it actually formed from the overspill from two post Flood lakes. (Creation Today,
n.d.) Obviously, all of this evidence creates major problems for evolution, but is fully explained by
Noah s Flood. One of the biggest pieces of evidence for the Flood is the Cambrian explosion. The
Cambrian explosion is taught by evolutionist to be a sudden burst of evolution caused by an
increase in favorable environments. An evolutionist article states, Fossils provide solid evidence
that organisms from the past are not the same as those found today; they show a progression of
evolution... The resulting fossil record tells the story of the past and shows the evolution of form
over millions of years. For example, scientists have recovered highly detailed records showing
the evolution of humans and horses. (Evidence of Evolution, n.d.) In reality the fossil record
shows that there was a sudden and nearly simultaneous appearance of all known phyla as well as
species from the most distant parts of the family tree during the Cambrian period, instead of a
gradual evolution. (Wieland, n.d.) (Wise, 2009) Fossils have been found worldwide in
Precambrian rocks, but they were too bizarre and different

The Impact Of The Manchu Invasion Of China
One might wonder what life was like in China 300 years ago? Or even think about the aspects of
life just 100 years ago? Others ponder the history of China, and how the country came to be. The
Manchus, and their invasion of China played an enormous role in all of these thoughts. The
Manchu invasion of Chinaduring the 17th century, was an extremely significant event in Chinese
history, that left important impacts on China. It also helped to influence culture for years to come.
The Manchu people were a, federation of various tribes living in what is today China s provinces
of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang who belonged to the Tungus branch of the Atlantic people
(Theobald, The Manchus ). The Manchus replaced the Ming Dynasty in China after the decline of
the Ming in 1644.
The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 until the dynasty commenced deterioration. By the
beginning of the 1600s, the Ming began to lose power due to threats from Barbarians on all
sides, political in fighting, rebellions, and poor loyalty in the military (Ryder). Likewise, the
spread of violence in China contributed to the collapse of the Ming Dynasty (Zarrow). In the year
1644, the Chinese rebels overthrew the dynasty (Williams). At this time, the Ming emperor
committed suicide as the rebel armies invaded Beijing (Zarrow). After the rebels overthrew the
Ming, the Manchu people stepped in to try and gain power.
The Manchus were able to establish clear power due to their strong discipline, unity,

Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era Essay
Gainsborough, A Story of a Painter and an Era
To be able to appraise the originality of eighteenth century English art, one must recognize its
importance in history. A great painter to research is Thomas Gainsborough. His artwork was an
important aspect of the art community of the middle seventeen hundreds. His paintings seem to
bring brightness and color to a period in art that needed his creative boost. His combination of
portrait paintings along with beautiful landscapes was not recognized in his time, but would be
recognized as remarkable later in history.
Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in the town of Sudbury in Suffolk (Internet 1). He grew
up as the son of a woodworking father and his mother was a teacher. He had 7 ... Show more content

This did not interest Gainsborough; he enjoyed being able to paint subjects outdoors (Internet 4).
He was fond of drawing trees grass and other objects that would not be found in an indoor studio.
He was not the first to draw backgrounds in his paintings; many have done this before him. His
task was to paint a background that was just as important as the subjects do but not distract either.
By painting outdoors, his paintings became much more colorful that most paintings of the past
(Woodall 32).
Brighter paintings were much improvement over the paintings of the past. They were very eye
appealing and much more noticeable. Gainsborough s untrained painter s eye did not effect the
outcome of his paintings; he was painting from his heart. He painted whatever his eyes saw; in
most cases the outcome of his paintings were a perfect mix of background and foreground.
People began to start noticing his artwork even though he did not have a degree or formal
education in art; this was very promising to the young painter. His work slowly moved up into the
great artwork of the city. His name was becoming known all around. He can begin his career with
the bright colors he added to the scenery of the painting.
One superb example of where the colors and scenery effected a painting is in the painting Mr. and
Mrs. Andrews. In my first examination of the painting, many questions were brought up. One

Library Synthesis Essay
They say that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Increasingly in the United States, you also
cannot judge a library s value to its community by simply its books. In today s society we observe
the changes that have occurred throughout time; one of them being technology. Technology has
infiltrated every aspect in our lives and it has changed the way we access and receive information,
which presents major challenges and opportunities for public librarysystems across the world.
These new technologies have changed our reading habits, but our need for public space to find
information and connect with others is unlikely to change any time soon. To survive in the digital
age and stay relevant, public libraries have adapted to the new trends of how we read, work and

world. Many changes have occurred in the past and more are to come, but the one thing that
history has shown us is that it is perfectly normal to hope that libraries will persevere for a long
time. As a matter of fact, there is evidence that libraries are changing rapidly. They are offering a
wide range of other media and modern technologies like, videos, audio books, e books, DVD s and
microsoft Excel classes (Source B). Many believe that libraries only serve as storage for books, but
libraries are more than that, They serve as the center of academic discourse, a resource for many,

The storm came fast, and in minutes, it was gone. Afterward, when you looked up to the sky, it

Essay on Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma
Red Lobster s Ethical Dilemma Term Paper
Gerry Mullen, CEO of Red Lobster restaurants, has been faced with a dilemma. He recently
received an email from Terry Modotti, Vice President for Public Relations concerning the lobster
retrieval in La Mosquitia, also known as the Mosquito Coast. The article states that many of the
young working men are being killed and maimed to make lobsters available at cheap process to
consumers in the United States. The men, known as buzos, must dive up to 130 feet for lobster, and
face dangerous decompression sickness which begins with paralysis and ends in a slow death.
This is due to the fact that there are no medical or decompression facilities on the boats, and there
is also no equipment to aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another disadvantage of implementing this option would be that net earnings would decrease
due to a decrease in consumers, and shareholders will be angered by the decreasing figures of the
company. With all of the negativity being placed upon the company as a result of this option, a
bad light would be shown on the CEO and the company, especially since Gerry is relatively new.
Since there are clearly more disadvantages than advantages for Gerry and Red Lobster by
exercising this option, I would advise Gerry to further pursue other options. Another option with
which Gerry could investigate would be for Red Lobster to offer to pay a higher price for
lobster to boat companies in the Mosquito Coast in order for the divers to receive a higher salary
cut. A possible advantage to this is that it would provide a better living environment for the
divers. It is stated in the article that after the sacabuzos (middlemen), boat captains, and fish
processors take their share of the money, what remains for the buzos is a mere $2 per pound of
lobster fetched. Within a two week time period, this rate will amount to about $300. If the divers
are trying to support families, $300 for two weeks is quite meager. By increasing the price that
Red Lobster is willing to pay for wholesale lobster, the divers will benefit considerably due to a
higher salary. Another advantage to a higher salary would mean that more individuals would be
inclined to become divers,

the United States in the early 20 th Century and was modeled on the basis of the prevalent 2 year
graduate programs. It gained significant traction after its inception, however was later criticized

However, given the theory of economies of scale, we can assume that INSEAD s costs per year
related to students are approximately 1.5 than that of LBS. Specifically, we could adjust Staff costs
, External Teaching Costs and Programme catering and accommodation by this factor. Total
adjustment: based on these two changes results shows that INSEAD incurs additional expense of
ВЈ58 m. However, due to the larger class size, this cost gets spread across a larger student base.
As a result, when LBS s total cost is normalized to assume the same student volume as that of
INSEAD, LBS s total adjusted cost can be estimated to be ВЈ77 m or 42% greater than that of
INSEAD. In summary, the lower price per year at LBS cannot be explained due to potential
differences in cost, as the adjusted cost of offering the MBA program at LBS is an estimated
42% greater than that offered at INSEAD. The Role of Consumer Behavior As discussed above,
given costs cannot explain the variance in price, another explanation to this dilemma could be
found on the consumer or demand side. More specifically, the willingness to pay for an MBA
degree, whether 1 or 2 years maybe a certain level that the potential market may not be willing to

Greek Ancient Athens
The city state of Athens is a part of the Greek Archaic cities. The history of Athens dates back to
3000 BCE, where the earliest evidence of occupation is documented, but the focus here is on
Athens in the Archaic Period, which dates from 800 500 BCE. During this period there were a
large variety of features that were detailed in the accounts of the city s society and history. The
center of the city is dominated by two hills, the Pnyx and the Acropolis. Pnyx is where the Popular
Assembly held its meetings. The Acropolis was the fortified center, then later became a religious
sanctuary, the home of Athena, the patron goddess of the city, and a host of other deities. During

On May 6, 1993, three eight year old boys were found savagely murdered in West Memphis
Arkansas. The investigation lacks hard evidence and a suspect, and the police automatically turn
their focus on Satanism. Unfortunately, three teenage boys became the prime suspects: Damien
Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley. Because they wore black and listened to hard rock
music, they were outcasts. With nothing but circumstantial evidence mounted upon these teenage
boys, the community lets a Satanic Panic outweigh the facts. All the while, there is more than just
circumstantial evidence that points to one of the victims stepfather, John Mark Byers. He had the

The absence of blood on the bank and lack of mosquito bites on the boys bodies suggest that they
were murdered at another location and simply dumped at the creek. This leads to the speculation
that the boys were with someone that they trusted at another location when they were killed.
Christopher was the only one of the boys that had defensive wounds. This piece of evidence
implies to two things: first, all of the boys were comfortable with their attacker, and second,
Christopher had possibly been abused by the attacker before and knew what was coming (Steel).
This would lead one to believe that Chris was the target.
The police were convinced that they had found their killers in the three teenagers after hearing
and recording Jessie s so called confession to the crime and his tying Damien and Jason to it as
well. Even though alibis were presented by the boys the police ignored them and went ahead
with the arrests. It is rather obvious, that basing the whole case and investigation on the coerced
confession given by Jessie is a seriously flawed decision on the part of the West Memphis police
and brings the credibility of the department into question. Police discovered a knife in the Byers
household belonging to John Mark Byers. Forensics stated that the type of blade on the knife was
the same type used to cut and mutilate the three young boys; yet the blood found on the knife was
never analyzed. When asked about the knife, Byers stated

  • 3. Peace Like A River Courage Analysis One of the most needed human traits is courage. The book, Peace Like A River by Leif Enger, displays many types of courage throughout the book and we can learn from them...of why courage is important. Courage is an important trait to have because we learn from it, gain new things, and it s helping others in need. The first reason of why courage is important is because it can be learned from. How courage is connected with learning is because people with courage and bravery learn from the mistakes that they took on. Why, yes sir, I told Elvis. He asked Dad a question. He said, How many times you let the dog bite you, before you put him down? And the court did not erupt, nor the jury gasp in wonder at that revelation; only Elvis s eyebrows... The goose had to be out of range; yet somehow it shuddered, went graceless, and made a controlled fall to the ground, some eighty yards away. (7). Even through Reuben wasn t confident of shooting down a bird and had failed the first time, he didn t give up and shot again, and got the bird he was shooting for. This takes immense courage to face and go through, especially when it s something a person loves to do and to learn about. Also, in another part of the book, Reuben gets his reward of helping someone else, He pulled out two ten dollar bills and a five and said, You done a good job, then patted another pocket and came out with two chocolate bars. (119). This was earned by the courage and hard work that Reuben did to earn some money and chocolate bars. By doing something good and trying hard; which takes courage; a person, in this case, Reuben, will earn more especially if they work really hard and quickly. This is shown because the man that Reuben was working for, gave extra for the extra effort he d put ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Oropharyngeal Airway Respiratory emergencies can be caused by obstructions, inflammations, trauma, and several different disease processes. The most common obstruction of the airway is the tongue. This usually occurs when the patient has become unconscious secondary to another cause such as intoxication, low blood sugar, or trauma. While tongue obstruction of the airway can have deadly results, it can be easily solved by re positioning the airway using the either the jaw thrust maneuver if trauma is suspected, or the head tilt chin lift if no trauma is suspected. Also if the patient is unconscious and has no gag reflex you can use an oropharyngeal airway to hold the tongue up and out of the airway. However, using an oropharyngeal airway does not mean that you can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other times severe trauma can cause pulmonary edema such as blood in the lungs. Patients who are unresponsive for various reasons such as cardiac arrest, alcohol intoxication, or low blood sugar can aspirate stomach contents due to the loss of their ability to protect their own airway. Aspiration can severely impede the alveoli s ability to exchange gases. The patient can suffocate if action is not taken promptly. The aspiration may also cause pneumonia or other types of infections that can be potentially deadly for the patient. This is one of the reasons why managing and controlling n unconscious patient s airway is so crucial during pre hospital care. Another critical respiratory emergency is a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can be caused by a blood clot, by an air bubble, by a large foreign body in the circulatory system such as a catheter shear, or in rare cases by amniotic fluid in pregnant females. Whatever the cause of the embolism, the results can have the same deadly consequences. • 6. A Personalized Sergei Bodrov A role in a movie is like a mirror that reflects an actor s personality. Some actors are capable of playing certain roles but not others. If an actor can feel the role, he or she will play it naturally, as it would resemble his or her life. Actors put their heart into playing, which gives them the model. Through a role an actor connects to the audience who makes the final decision about the movie s purpose; that is why it is very important to show this purpose correctly by playing it sincerely. Personalization is a significant factor that can lead to the success or failure of a film. The captives work finding mines for the Chechen as guinea pigs to clear a road for the others to pass. However, the prisoners survive the work zones and come back to the house of Abdul Murat. • 7. Why Guns Should Be Illegal Essay The United States has issues with guns. We need better gun control so these killings stop happening and innocent young or older lives stop getting taken away too soon. Did you know that in addition to the Las Vegas Strip massacre in Nevada where 58 people died and 851 were injured, there have been a staggering 97 mass shootings since 1982. Stephen Paddock fired more than 1,100 rounds that night. It is known as the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the United States. • 8. My Personal Life Goals Have you ever woken up one morning and asked yourself, What am I doing with my life? This happened to me one day, and I quickly realized I have lost sight of my goals. Goals help you set a road map for your life, to accomplish things that are special to you and will help you move through life. They can be as simple as: wanting to improve your car, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, or on the long term end: wanting to graduate college with a degree in accounting. My first goal, would be to improve my clunker car, which is something I have always owned my entire life. A clunker car is usually an older model car that is not in the best condition. Instead of getting a brand new car, which is expensive, it is cheaper just to fix the little problems in the car. Which can be made up into smaller goals because they are easier to achieve one at a time. For example, right now there are no sunvisors in my car because the ones I currently have will not stay in the upright position, instead they move around and will not stay still. Replacing my old sun visors with new ones would be extremely helpful on those hot sunny summer days to block the sun and they will stay in their place when you don t need to use them. Secondly, there is a cassette radio player in my car. Cassettes are very hard to find nowadays, everything is on cds or you can stream music with your cell phone and play it through the car speakers. To be able to have a cd player would mean no longer to have to fast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Examples Of The Crucible And The Columbine Shootings We Cannot (E)scapegoat What Happened The mainstream media is constantly being blamed for crimes that people themselves commit. In The Crucible, a group of girls were caught dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris. This was thought of as a sin and the girls used their overly religious society to their advantage by blaming their actions on witches. The Columbine shooting was a tragic event that brought high school safety into a new light. Both of the seniors committing the crime killed themselves before they could be questioned, causing the terrified public to blame the incident on the media, specifically Marilyn Manson. While The Crucible and the Columbine shootings are similar in people standing up for incoherent children and deaths for selfish reasons, they are also very different. Children in high school were killed in the Columbine shooting while adults were killed in The Crucible and the who was targeted. A scapegoat, by definition is, A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency (Oxford dictionary). The Crucible is easily one of the greatest examples of a scapegoat. The town was completely prepared to blame witches for the girls actions. The Columbine shooting blamed Marilyn Manson, a man known for his outlandish dress and style. On April 20th, 1999, two students murdered 12 teachers and students in cold blood. These two seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, committed suicide before incredulous government officials were able to ask them why. The public standing up for incoherent children was one of the interchangeable qualities brought forth in these stories. People were killed because the public was oblivious and not paying attention to what these kids were calling out. The two criminals, guilty of the Columbine massacre, were social outcasts. Dylan Klebold, one of the two seniors, was clinically depressed and was prepared to commit suicide. They had gotten arrested previously for breaking into a van, and spend the rest of that year trying to convince everyone they were sorry. Both of the teenagers were openly hateful as well. Eric Harris wrote in his journal, You know what I hate? Star Wars fans: get a friggin life, you boring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Food Safety Practices By Consumers, New Zealand Summary This study identifies that costs of food safety are high in the developed world, and consumer awareness on food safety practices is lacking especially in younger consumers. The explosion of ever increasing fast food chains and poor food eating practices by Consumers, New Zealanders increasingly are getting affected by Obesity and diseases such as Diabetes. According to the World Health Organisation, New Zealand has an Obesity rate of 27% (who.int, 2008) and is ranked the 12th most overweight country in the world (nzherald.co.nz, 2013). 225,000 kiwis also have either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes (diabetes.org.nz, 2012). It can be argued that because of the increases in rates of Diabetes and Obesity, consumers are scared of the impacts to their health and wellbeing as they grow older and are increasingly becoming more health conscious in the choices they make for food consumption. In the US, 64% of Consumers now agree that it s important to eat healthy foods compared to 57% in 2010 (newhope360.com, 2013). As consumers become more health conscious, food producers and sellers look to take advantage of this to promote and sell their food in new and different ways that might be perceived as healthier options. One such method that is changing consumer food preference is the emergence of local Weekend Food Markets as a hip and trendy way to sell food to consumers versus traditional retail avenues such as supermarkets and grocery stores. Consumers arguably favour these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Artificial Sentience Essay The use of computers has pervaded the life of every human being. At every street corner there are machines to be found that have been designed to simplify our lives and take over the mundane jobs that no longer require human intervention. One only needs to think of automated teller machines replacing bank tellers, vending machines phasing out street vendors, or near infallible CCTV watching over us as policemen and sheriffs once did, to realise the extent that technology has enhanced and improved our existence. Given the speed and effectiveness with which computer technology has become a regular part of our lives, it is not surprising that there is much speculation about the future implications of these developments. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question of consciousness In order to determine whether it is possible to compute consciousness, it is first necessary to define consciousness. This in itself is something that scientists and philosophers have struggled with for ages. For the purposes of this paper, the definition proposed by [Searle, 1998] will be used: Consciousness consists of inner, qualitative, subjective states and processes of sentience or awareness. Consciousness, so defined, begins when we wake in the morning from a dreamless sleep and continues until we fall asleep again, die, go into a coma or otherwise become unconscious. The difficulty with this definition with regards to the Turing computability of consciousness is that it defines the existence of a subjective state as a prerequisite for consciousness. According to Searle s Chinese room argument [Searle, 1980], the fact that a system produces the same output as a conscious mind would in response to the same input does not prove the presence of subjective consciousness. However, this same argument can be used in favour of solipsist views; it cannot be proven that anyone in this world is truly conscious merely by virtue of acting in ways that suggest consciousness. It is therefore a moot point. As [Turing, 1950] put it: [I]nstead of arguing continually over this point, it is usual to have a polite convention that everyone thinks. If the ... • 12. Charlie Fish Use Of Foreshadowing In Death By Scrabble Charlie Fish s story Death by Scrabble is a suspenseful story about how much a husband wanted to kill his wife. Fish uses foreshadowing, red herring, and sensory imagery in his story. The use of these Art of Suspense techniques can inspire readers to continue to the end, wondering what will happen next. Foreshadowing is a common technique used in stories, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In the story, Death by Scrabble, the author makes it that for every word played in the game, the word, in a way, comes true. When the husband plays ZAP, his wife gets an electric shock. As well as when he plays EXPLODES, the air conditioning unit explode[d] (Fish 2). The author hints that the wife is aware of what her husband is planning when she plays CAUTION as one of her words. When Fish writes about how much the husband wants to kill his wife, he writes: Maybe I should kill her, if only I had a D, then I could play MURDER (Fish 1). This leads us, the readers, to believe that the husband wants to kill his wife and is, in some way, excited to do so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. Julius Rosenberg Research Paper As a child, I remember my relatives offering me a piece of gum and ending up finding out that it was a shocking toy! Surprisingly, Ouch!, I said. Comparing that shock to an electric chair, could you imagine the pain? In 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who shared the same admiration for the Communist party, were both executed with an electric chair. Due to their involvement with the Soviet Union and transferring information from their connections during World War II, they were caught and executed. One hundred years ago, Julius Rosenberg was born in New York City. His parents immigrated from Russia. He was so fascinated by politics that he joined the Young Communist League as a teenager. When he attended college, he studied electrical engineering and soon after became an engineer for the United StatesArmy. Three years before Julius was born, Ethel was born on 1915. Being a part of many theater shows at her school, she always appreciated music and theater during high school. She started to be in support of the Communist Party when she was involved in a worker s union at her job, where she met Julius at a union event.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was able to obtain private plans of the U.S. Army s atomic bomb and the making of their proximity fuse. He persuaded Ethel s brother, David Greenglass who was in the U.S. Army, to share the information since he was working for the development of the weapons. Andrew Lloyd Webber utilizes masks in The Phantom of the Opera, in such a way that really captivates the viewers and helps to highlight and hide certain aspects. Not only does he use the maskto shield the Phantom s deformation, he also shows what kind of person the Phantom is with and without the mask, including his behaviour, and actions towards others. When Christine removes the mask without his permission, he responds very angrily, saying, Damn you! You little prying Pandora! You little demon...Curse you! You little lying Delilah! You little viper! In doing so, he demonstrates a much more aggressive and contentious persona towards her. In the midst of cursing and yelling at her, Erik threw her down, forcefully, after she removed his mask. Over time, the effects of oil and gas exploration on the environment have become a cause of concern to stakeholders, government, NGOs communities and individuals. This has led the government to formulate various policies to arrest the situation and thus promote sustainable exploration activities. Unfortunately, most of these programs have not yielded the desired results (Guardian Newspaper 2006: 16). The rural populace in the Niger Delta mainly practice fishing and subsistence farming, but during floods, which lasts for over half of the year in some areas the waters are usually contaminated which negatively affects marine life; with the waters unable to sustain vegetation due to petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants. Drinking water is scarce and in the dry season, water is usually not available which also increases the risk of water borne diseases. The inhabitants of the area also experience scorching heat daily from gas flaring which is also detrimental to the health of the people (Chukwuezi, 2006:4). The major problems of the Niger Delta Region mentioned above can be summarized as follows: Poverty Poverty has been described as the inability of a person to meet basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and education. Even though its concept has changed as time goes by, it is still regarded as one of the best political systems and used in many countries. Unfortunately, most Asian countries did not use this political system until the middle of the 20th century, so they have a very short history compared with western countries. Because of that, Asia has had some troubles. For example, Park and Shin (2006) said that many countries have had military dictatorship which is a common government for a developing country. A developing country, above all, might want to develop their economy, so they endure dictatorship because the dictator can make a decision easily and quickly (Park, C. D. Shin, D., 2006). It also happened in South Korea 50 years ago. In spite of military dictatorship in the past, South Korea has the most successfully established democracy in Asia (Whitehead, L., 2002). A survey conducted by Donald McCabe, revealed that 36% of 63700 surveyed undergraduate students admitted to paraphrasing/copying few sentences from the internet source without footnoting it (qtd in Facts and Stats ). Two schools in North America, George Brown College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are quite strict about plagiarism. Even though each school have roughly similar definitions of plagiarism, they differ in the procedure they apply as well as the focus of their policies. For both schools, plagiarism is defined as the lack of respect for academic integrity. George Brown s Student Code of Conduct and Discipline defines plagiarism as the act of quoting, paraphrasing or expressing an idea that was articulated by someone else from a text or paper without identification as to source (5). The MIT s document Academic Integrity defines plagiarism as the use of someone s words, idea, data, etc, without the acknowledgement of having done so (5). Based on their definitions, it is clear that both schools consider plagiarism as a severe academic honesty offence that deserves to be punished. On the other hand, George Brown applies a shorter and briefer punishment procedure than the MIT. George Brown applies a direct punishment to the offence committed meanwhile the MIT applies a process that is based on 3stages. The Student Code of George Brown states that the College will ... • 23. European Imperialism In British India The works of Thomas Metcalf, T.W. Roberts, Daniel Headrick, and other notable historians explore the development of the European imperial project through the use of architecture, technology, and medicine. These technologies become the machines and driving force of imperialism and are used to retain control over colonial regions. Headrick argues that these sciences provide the means to the motives behind the imperialist powers who are working to keep their territorial subjects subdued to their will. Without the means of technology, the motive can never be achieved, and the constructed empires are inevitably doomed to failure. Along with the means of technology, the invention, use, and implantation of these technologies also reflect the broader political and social trends of the empires. Architecture, technology, and medicine showcase the changes in imperial policies, ideologies and overarching view of the empireitself. (Present or Past Tense) Metcalf s analysis of architecture in British India shows how a combination of cultures becomes essential in designing an empire that reflected both the colonizer and the subjects. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, British officials realized that a serious reassessment of Indian culture was necessary for Britain to remain the colonial power. Metcalf explores the construction of the Mayo College and the architectural debates that came with building it. The formation and science behind the architecture are essential to empire building ... After a hard day like this she got to go home and clean her house and cook food, I can just imagine how fun this was. The incident in the movie when I found out that the minister?s wife was pregnant by one of the men who gang raped her amazed me because I didn?t know things like that happened back then. Have you ever felt that your most productive days in the workplace come from a foundation of happiness. Hello, my name is Shelby Ward and I am here to present my findings of why Gross National Happiness is a superior and more effective way to measure a Country s overall well being. Currently, the widely accepted measurement of the economic success of a country is found solely in a number. A country s Gross Domestic Productor GDP. GDP follows the interaction of goods and services with regards to their production and consumption. By measuring consumer, government and industry spending along with the balance of trade, the GDP is a reliable indicator of economic health. Many economists suggest that this is the only way to measure, however as reliable as it is, GDP only measures one thing Money. For many, an economy s health is determined by several factors. If any other characters make such statement, the reader might take it as an empty threat. However, after learning about Wu Sung s background and extraordinary strength, the reader understands that Wu Sung would carry out such actions if his desires are not satisfied. The need for additional financing is a result of multiple factors that placed intense pressure on available cash. The extreme growth rate in sales was accompanied with heavy spending on research and development along with rapid expansion in the company s sales force and other marketing expenditures. Note that the industry s cash to sales ratio is not given directly but can be deducted by taking the Cash to Assets ratio of 16.3% (1985) and Assets to Sales ratio of 45.3% (Upper Quartile in 1985). We hypothesized that students who were high in friendliness would also be high in agreeableness, while being low in hostility. We expected a strong correlation with agreeableness, and a slightly strong correlation with hostility. However, when looking at all three traits we found that agreeableness, while being the big umbrella it is, might not fully account for traits underneath it. As well as friendliness and hostility having a stronger negative correlation than we anticipated. Friendliness can be defined as the good nature, amiability of one s personality. In other words: how agreeable and outgoing one is towards others. Friendliness has been found to be more prevalent in females than males (Moskowitz, 1993), and has been found to be generalized across situations. In this research we want to look at college students to see if there is any significance between friendliness and aggressiveness. To do this we have created our own friendliness scale and compared it to the Iowa State Hostility Scale (Dill, Anderson, Anderson, Deuser, 1997) and the agreeableness items from the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) (Gosling, Augustine, Vazire, Holtzman, Gaddis, 2011). ... • 35. The Disappearance Of Childhood By Neil Postman Even though childhood has change for the better there is an argument stating that childhood is disappearing at a dazzling speed (Postman, 1996) says that there is a closing gap between childhood and adulthood. Neil Postman (1996) claims this in his book The Disappearance of Childhood . Postman theory was purely based on the way that communications through technology were made which shapes society today. He thinks that due to the technology such as television and the Internet children nowadays are much likely to have more access to the adult world , thus childhood to be disappearing (Postman, 1982). He claims its Frankenstein Syndrome consequence of the mass media is mainly the responsible for the usage of television, and the social media. Palmer (2007) parallels this study with Postman (1982) and thinks that parents tend to use technology such as television and electronic games to keep their children occupied and to be quiet due to their busyness or maybe too preoccupied by consumerism to give the children the traditional childhood. The book makes durable case for the traditional values and through her study has noticed that children need to develop skills such as developing their focus. She also recommends real food rather the ones high in sugar and more fish oil, eaten at family meals. Another study has also been made by Pugh (2002) he proposes that parents that spends time with and on their children is consumption as compensation . The parents who are cash rich ... In the manifesto, Rushkoff describes presentism which focuses on the present more so than the past and even the future in relation to money and time. Rushkoff is trying to enlighten us of the changes to the way we do business and how consumers want business to be done. Throughout the manifesto, we get a sense of Rushkoff s opinion on our moneysystem and how times have changed. I think this decision was important because it focuses on how our currency system works and how it was originated. This section of the text really changes how money should be perceived and how we as a society has changed. Rushkoff evaluates the origin of our currency and basically says it s out of date. As our economy has shifted to increasingly more digital networks, our currency has been devalued. Rushkoff says, the money we use today central, bank issued currency is an artifact of the late middle ages (116). While this system of currency has worked well, we need to shift to our digital stage in order to continue functioning. The time based rules of money work quite well in an expansionist Industrial Age, (as long as we ignore the impact on crafts people, local economies, and, of course slave populations), but they no longer seem to function properly in a digital economy (117). Rushkoff says that because as times change, and we switch to almost all digital transactions, our value and use of real currency also needs to change. You can t have something lagging behind the other in society, it doesn t work that way. And Rushkoff wants his audience to know that. He wants these big CEO s to be warry of perhaps a major shift in the use of currency. He wants them to know because large business corporations are what keep society ... The topic of mental illness and creative ability has been documented for years and is still being researched today. She spend most of her life secluded from the world, she wrote hundreds of poems and was able to capture extreme emotional states in some of her greatest works. Dickinson used her poetry as a method of communicating her emotional distress or happiness. Some of poetry speaks of death and morality, which would clearly point to a state of depression. When Dickenson was 53 she wrote, The Physician says I have nervous prostration, but I do not know the name of this sickness. Nervous prostration, at that time, was identified as an illness characterized by anxiety and depression. In addition, her illness may have been the end result of earlier documented panic attacks and agoraphobia. She used her writings as a way to express how she was feeling and what she experienced. The thing is when a victim is scammed the first thing he/she would do is blaming the scammer. However, whose fault is it, the persuader or the victim? In order for persuaders to be able to win they must gain people s trust, desire and belief. I believe in processes of gaining those things, persuaders usually lie about certain things to be able to benefit themselves. Who is it to blame if I trusted a doctor who said he/she could cure my cancer from faith healing and prayers and I die? For example, some people fake as doctors to scam people. They might say something like I could cure your mother s breasts cancer by prayer of course it sounds stupid, but with the desire of the victim, they are likely to be less aware and more credible. The responsibility should be the person who didn t deliver his/her promises. In this case, I believe the persuader is the one responsibility for this case because he is faking/lying who he is and what he promises by faking his identity and could be ruining someone life, happiness and hope. However, I also think the victim should educate themselves or think carefully before trusting. Con artists who prey and victimize others should undoubtedly be punished, but we should encourage people to educate themselves so as to make these crimes. On the other hand salesman who successfully convinces you into buying something is a very similar case, however I think they are less of a crime, because they are not completely faking it, at least they are promising the possible outcome like the protein powder. In this case I think the fault should be more towards the victims because I believe they should know that some salesmen don t even know their products so they lie and exaggerate about their products. Also, they are playing with your brain and your desire. Most salesmen only care about money, which is why they are trying to persuade you. I think victims should educate themselves more because if their products is really good, they wouldn t even need to come to you and persuade to sell. His task was to paint a background that was just as important as the subjects do but not distract either. By painting outdoors, his paintings became much more colorful that most paintings of the past (Woodall 32). Brighter paintings were much improvement over the paintings of the past. They were very eye appealing and much more noticeable. Gainsborough s untrained painter s eye did not effect the outcome of his paintings; he was painting from his heart. • 54. Devil s Knot Essay On May 6, 1993, three eight year old boys were found savagely murdered in West Memphis Arkansas. The investigation lacks hard evidence and a suspect, and the police automatically turn their focus on Satanism. Unfortunately, three teenage boys became the prime suspects: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley. Because they wore black and listened to hard rock music, they were outcasts. Police discovered a knife in the Byers household belonging to John Mark Byers. Forensics stated that the type of blade on the knife was the same type used to cut and mutilate the three young boys; yet the blood found on the knife was never analyzed. When asked about the knife, Byers stated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
