The Invisible Empire Of The South
Chris Folsom December 29, 2014 Facing History: KKK Persecutions The Invisible Empire of
the South The practice of slavery has played a prominent role in American history and society.
As early as 1619, our Colonial ancestors had used African slaves as a method of more efficiently
harvesting crops and making a profit . The first North American colony to practice slavery was
Jamestown, Virginia . John Rolfe introduced tobacco, a notoriously difficult crop to harvest, to the
Virginia colony . The African workforce allowed the colony to more effectively harvest their
tobacco plants and prosper . Slavery would remain a common practice in North America throughout
the next three centuries . While the Northern states benefited from the advantages of a versatile,
diverse economy, the Southern region remained primarily agrarian . Therefore, the necessity of
slavery in the country varied disparately in the two continental regions. The South and their
plantation economy depended upon slavery for a work force while the Northern economy would
easily continue to flourish with its abolition. Spearheaded by William Lloyd Garrison, former slave
Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman, the mid 19th century abolition movement and the desire to
abolish peculiar institution would eventually divide the nation . A Balkan powder keg of our own,
pro/anti slavery legislation, debates and compromises set the scene for regional division .

The Anzio Breakout Essay
January 22, 1944 the sun is shining, and there is quite wind blowing across the beach of Anzio.
In the next two days this beach will be covered in upwards of 30,000 allied troops and will see
some of the bloodiest fighting of the war in the next four months. Anzio was originally supposed to
be a distraction that Sir Alexander could use to breach the Gustav line. However, after a failure to
immediately push towards Rome the allieswould be trapped in trench warfare and would be forced
to breakout of Anzio. This was, simply enough, called the Anzio Breakout. The escape from Anzio
was comprised of the plan and its flaw, the invasion, and the Breakout. The allied commander Sir
Alexander felt that he would be unable to take Rome unless a... Show more content on

In the next week the Allies moved in seven miles fighting off the scattered but increasing
Germans. As the moved along the Anzio Albano Road toward Campoleone, they captured the
town of Aprilia, which created a massive dent in enemy lines, but were unbale to breakout of the
beachhead. Although they met some heavy resistance on the way to Cisterna and Littoria, that
eventually halted their advance, they managed to increase their numbers, and built anti air guns
impairing the German Luftwaffe. Despite their progress because they did not immediately drive
towards Rome the Germans were able to recover and retaliate. Most of the German counterstrikes
were random air raids on the snarl of trenches the allies had dug. The allies broken and weary
from the random barrage of artillery were more then ready to escape the trenches of Anzio and
head towards the capital Rome.
They got their chance on May 12, 1944. On this date the Fifth and Eighth corps retaliated with their
long anticipated offensive against the Gustav Line, finally allowing them to capture Cassino
successively breaking the Gustav Line. Playing to the advantage of the turbulent status in the
central mountains, and using an Allied artillery barrage, along with armor and infantry assaults
along the Anzio, the Cisterna front was opened. On May 23rd, The Allies were able to rupture the
German main line of resistance using air

Tort Law Task 3
Describe general tortious liability comparing and contrasting this to contractual liability
Definition of Tort: According to Prof. P H Winfield, Tortious Liability arises from breach of a
duty primarily fixed by law; this duty is towards persons generally and its breach is redressable by
an action for unliquidated damages.
Sir John Salmond defined Tort as a civil wrong for which the remedy is common law action for
unliquidated damages and which is not exclusively the breach of contract or the breach of trust or
other merely equitable obligation.

In contrast, tort laws govern situations where one person has harmed or injured another person.
Tort laws cover violations where the party intentionally harmed the other person, such as in a
battery claim. Tort laws also address incidents where the party may be held liable even if they did
not act intentionally, such as in negligence claims or strict liability claims. Tort laws usually result
in the liable party paying the victim monetary damages to compensate for their losses.
Both attract damages and some other remedies, for example injunctions. You may get more
damages if sue in Tort, it will depend on the case.
Explain what is meant by negligence and how an employer could be found liable in negligence
Negligence
Negligence is a common law tort, which has been developed though case law. Despite being a
modern tort it is the most common. In order to prove liability in Negligence the claimant must
show, on the balance of probabilities, that the defendant owed a duty of care, breached that duty by
failing to meet the standard of care required and as a result the claimant suffered loss or damage
which is not too remote.
According to Jay M. Feinman of the Rutgers University School of Law;
The core idea of negligence is that people should exercise reasonable care when they act by taking
account of the potential harm that they might foreseeably cause to other people. [Fainman 2010]

Stone Breakers And The Stone Breakers
The mid 1800 s in France was truly a period for challenging arising issues in the midst a great
change. Gustave Courbet s The Stone Breakers and Jean Francois Millet s The Gleaners, are two
paintings that use the style of realism to convey a unique perspective of the reality around them.
(subjects, brush stroke, background)
The Stone Breakers is a painting that was created in the year 1849, by French artist Gustave
Courbet. This painting has the dimensions of 165 x 257 cm, and was done with the medium oil
on canvas. Upon first glance, a viewer can see this work as two males doing that remove and
break stone from a road that is being built. However, the painting s connotative meaning shows a
man that appears to be too old and a boy that appears to be too young for such harsh labour.
Courbet had made this decision with the intention of sharing his perspective on the reality of the
abuse and deprivation that had occurred in French rural life during that time period. Courbet s
intentions are significant because they display a truthful perspective while using ordinary people.
Courbet refrained from using subjects of people who are wealthy, and live a more glamourous
lifestyle, which was a norm for many french artists to incorporate in their work. The Stone
Breakers is a painting that challenges the ideologies in society, and provide viewers with a new
way of thinking towards the norms of labour in the society during the time period.
The Gleaners is a painting that was

The Social And Historical Context Of A Portrait Of The...
In this essay response I shall discuss the social and historical context of A Portrait of the Artist as
a Young Man and My Son the Fanatic and how they enhance our understanding of the texts and
then compare the two in their respective contexts. Religious extremism is a social ideology that
is heavily implemented into both A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and My Son the
Fanatic. With Steven Dedalus being subjected to his traditional family views of Catholicism as
was the author of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce. Throughout the text
Stephen is subjected to religious extremism, particularly in Chapter 3 when he attends Arnall s
sermon, while on a religious retreat, in which he learns of Hell and sin, beleiving that God had
allowed him to see the hell reserved for his sins and that the sermon is directed at him. This leads
him to a part of his life where he followed the Catholic faith to an extreme degree, much like in My
Son the Fanatic, whereby Ali devotes himself to the Muslim faith. At the time of publication, 1916,
Ireland had seen events such as The Easter Rising in which Catholics rebelled against the British
and the Protestants in a bid for independence. This mix of both the need for Independence and
religious extremism are elements that we see portratyed through Stephen. Knowing this information
we can see that Joyce portrays not only his own struggles with religion and independence using this
method but also the conflict found

Behavior Modification And Its Effect On Behavior Essay
Behaviors, are what people do and say, as humans, we notice how certain behaviors can be
desirable but also undesirable. Though behavior modification, a person can attempt to alter a
specific behavior by analyzing the behavior, and create a personalized plan to modify the
behavior. When analyzing the behavior a person needs to decide if the behavior is either is in
excess (to decrease the undesirable behavior) or deficit (to increase desirable behavior). Once
behavior is the selected, then the person must decide if they desire to increase or decrease their
behavior. Afterwards, the person needs to create a plan of action, this depends on their research
design and recording method. The plan action is personalized for each study. Behavior
modification allows a person to analyze a specific behavior and use a scientific technique to test if
their treatment/intervention will modify their behavior. For example, I choose a target behavior to
modify this semester which was studying. I had a behavioral deficit in studying that I desired to
address, I wished to increase my time studying by twenty five percent. My definition of studying
was any time (in minutes) that I dedicated to focusing on material necessary for my current classes,
some examples are reading material for class, doing assignments for class (homeworkor essays),
and reviewing material for exams (additional reading, notes, or index cards). I wished to address
my study habits because I had noticed I felt like I never

King Henry VIII and The Reformation
Martyrdom. The selfish king. A young monk. All played a significant part in the Reformation.
Before the Reformation, the people of England were homogenous in their beliefs as they
followed the Christian teachings of the Roman Catholic Pope. The Roman Catholic Church is an
ancient Church, and changes have been made over centuries. Problems arose because of
corruption in the church such as the political power of the Pope and the concept of indulgences.
An indulgence can be described as paying a fee to buy forgiveness. At this time the Church was
very powerful and persecuted anyone with differing beliefs including burning people at the stake
for having what were supposedly heretical beliefs. King Henry VIII led the English Reformation
by introducing a new church and bringing an end to the power of the Pope. Because of his love
and study of the Word of God, Martin Luther launched the Reformation which reached all of Europe
through his 95 Theses. Each of these events working simultaneously sparked religious unrest and
contention; the Reformation began to materialize. The Reformation was a time of increasing
religious diversity and tolerance. In spite of centuries of violence, religious tolerance can be found
in England because of the lessons learned through the Catholic Protestant conflict during the
Reformation. King Henry the VIII increased religious tolerance in England during the
Reformation. From 1480 to 1530 before King Henry s reign, society in England was arguably

suitable for very short distances, and air travel generally only becomes economic for journeys in
excess of 300 km, rails principal competitor is the motor vehicle. Although rail usage has
remained constant in passenger kilometre terms over the last decade, it has failed to keep pace
with the growing demand for passenger travel and its market share has fallen accordingly. With
bus and coach traffic showing identical behaviour, the beneficiary has inevitably been the car.
Over the last 40 years the percentage of total traffic travelling by rail has fallen from 17% to 5.6%,
while the percentage travelling by car has increased from 31% to 85,9%. Market Segmentation:

Essay on The Power of Money in Campaign Finance
It may seem that with the Buckley decision, soft money and PACs the hope for reform has been
lost, however there is still hope. The Supreme Court upheld the voluntary public financing of
presidential election, which was considered a great step forward because taking public funds
requires the candidate to limit their spending on the federal level. There is also the hard money in
political campaigns, which is strictly regulated by law through the Federal Election Commission.
Hard money is the contrast to soft money meaning that it is the contributions made by a person
or PAC that gives to a federal campaign or political party for the use in federal elections. But of
course with one step forward there is always two steps back. Because of... Show more content on

PACs and overly wealthy individuals are not the only ones dipping their hands in the secretly
jumbled world of campaign finance. Smaller interest groups and lobbyists are also getting their
favors and paychecks. Because election laws are so crammed with exceptions these different
groups can directly and openly support a candidate spending as much money as they would like.
This loophole is referred to as independent expenditures. The Supreme Court cleared the way for
smaller groups to work directly for or against a candidate, so long as the group does not coordinate
its efforts with the candidate it supports. Although these expenditures tend to be a just a bit smaller
then soft money funds, they are far more straightforward and blunt which proves to be even more
effective (Anderson 2000).
In my view, campaign finance has gone from something that could potentially help give the power
of government back to the people to a complete joke. When trying to answer the questions of
campaign finance you get a series of hidden meanings, jumbled definitions and no real answer to
you questions, which is exactly the way Washington and campaign workers like it. The more
bizarre and convoluted the rules are the more money each campaign can make. It seems that only
way to find out any real information is to become a member of the inside, controlling the way
campaigns really operate and change.

Analysis Of Margaret Cavendish s Baruch Spinoza A...
There was another philosopher in the seventeenth century who has a similar system and a possibly
more coherent system then Margaret Cavendish. Baruch Spinoza has a very unique monistic
system. Spinoza lays out a system consisting of one infinite substance with infinite attributes. The
two attributes which we can know are thought and extension. I will argue that the attribute of
thought and the attribute of extension correlate well with Cavendish s animate and inanimate
matter. I will argue that Spinoza s system is more coherent than Cavendish s and solves some of
her system s issues. If it is that case that we desire a system similar to Cavendish s then Spinoza s
system is a step in the right direction. Spinoza has a very unique style. He starts with clear
definitions and axioms. The definition and axioms he lays out are things to which most
philosophers in Europe at the time would have assented. He moves from these definitions and
axioms to propositions and proofs. He will state a proposition, and he will immediately follow that
with a proof of that proposition given the definitions, axioms, and already proven propositions. The
part of Spinoza with which we are concerned is his argument for monism. The argument takes place
in propositions one through fourteen. His ultimate goal is proposition fourteen: There can be, or be
conceived, no other substance but God. By this he means that everything that exists, from humans
to stars, are God. Spinoza does not assent to the

The Diversity Management Core Competencies Essay
The two core competencies that have decide to write about are individual differences and
leadership. These are two competencies that are extremely important on a daily basis, especially in
the workplace. Individual differences are the variations from different individuals, such as culture,
personality, perception, demographic factors, skills, and attitudes. It is important for individual
differences to be recognized and taken into consideration when it comes to managing any
organization. Leadershipis just as critical because it is the influence within an organization that has
a meaningful impact. Leadership maximizes individuals efforts so key goals can be achieved. It is
important to note that just because you manage an organization, that does not mean that you are
leading the organization. In a way, leadership is also the ability to turn a vision into a reality. I
chose these two diversity managementcore competencies because individual differences are
something you see everywhere, whether it s in an organization, group or team, and leadership is
something that no organization or group can have success without. I also chose leadership
because my supervisor at work is a great leader and she is constantly leading by example, so I can
relate to it personally and it is something I really respect and appreciate.

The CDA was restrained by a lower court until the supreme court could have a hearing on the
matter.
The Supreme Court heard argument from both the senators who originally proposed the bill and
from people concerned with the broadness of the act. The supreme court eventually determined that
the CDA was indeed unconstitutional, violating not only the first amendment, but also the fifth due
to the vague wording used. In the opinion statement Justice Stevens said:
The vagueness of the CDA is a matter of special concern for two reasons. First, the CDA is a
content based regulation of speech. The vagueness of such a regulation raises special First
Amendment concerns because of its obvious chilling effect on free speech. Second, the CDA is a
criminal statute. In addition to the opprobrium and stigma of a criminal conviction, the CDA
threatens violators with penalties including up to two years in prison for each act of violation. The
severity of criminal sanctions may well cause speakers to remain silent rather than communicate
even arguably unlawful words, ideas, and images.ii
The Supreme Court has always based their decisions on free speech on one base concept, the idea
that certain speech can be punished, but cannot be banned ahead of time. The concept behind the
CDA is clearly that, to ban indecent speech before it can even become available. The CDA was
originally created in response to an

Comparison Of Cinderella And Grimm s Cinderella
The Cinderella story as we know it is largely known due to the animated Disney film. Where we
follow an incredibly tiny footed main character, whose tiny feet, not only make me question her
ability to walk, but prove vital in her escape from vicious family members, as well as said family
s downfall. The modern version displays good triumphing over evil, a prince charming that comes
to the rescue of the damsel in distress, and a happily ever after ending. With the fairy taleCinderella,
Disney maintains similar themes as the Grimm version; however, the conflicts, events, and
characters that support this idea are altered to provide a different message. The Disney classic
focuses on a lovely young woman, the death of her mother, her father remarries then passes
himself, and her stepmother being a vicious woman with two less than pleasant daughters who
then treat the Cinderella as a slave in her own house. However, the original folktale version wasn t

Health Issues Of Ill Health
It is important that patterns of ill health are monitored as the Department of Health need to know
where to target the funds, and need to know what areas they need to target. For example, if the
levels of obesity are rising then the Department of Health needs to target this by putting in weight
maintenance courses and referring patients to clinics or recommending operations if they are
beyond helping themselves. Patterns of ill healthhelp the Department of Health to see what areas
are increasing and the reasons for this. The research into why this happens helps them to know how
to tackle the problem.
Statistics
Statistics are used to monitor and recognise the patterns of ill health throughout the UK. Once
statistics are collected they are published on the National Statistics website. It is important to

such as obesity are on the rise but also illnesses associated with smoking, drinking and drugs are

Analysis Of Film Production Of The Merchant Of Venice
Film Review
Michael Radford s 2004 film production of The Merchant of Venice provides a well executed
and generally faithful rendition of Shakespeare s play. Radford s production especially succeeds
in both its casting and set design that elevates the mood and drama contained in Shakespeare s
text. In addition to the filming, particular attention was taken to following the original text, but
some interesting in liberties in plot details were taken. Radford s production serves as an exemplar
of film adaptions of Shakespeare s play; it takes the challenge of adapting the text to the screen
with excellent casting, bold filming, and well imagined sets. Jeremy Irons as Antonio, the
merchant, gives a convincing mix of optimism converted to pessimism as he prepares for his death
in the court. Perhaps the best casting, Al Pacino plays an excellent Shylock that initially invokes the
movie watcher s empathy then turns quickly into an enraged, psychopathic persona reminiscent to
his characters in Scarface or Godfather. Particularly, Pacino shows off his talent in the famous
Hath not a Jew eyes monologue where Pacino takes us through a full emotional range of
compassion, sympathy, to scorching rage. Similarly, Radford uses this scene to show off his
directorial chops: the scene uses a follow shot in which the camera follows Pacino s character as he
crosses the dark Venetian streets, through a brothel to find Antonio s comrades, and back into the
streets where the heart of his

The functional structures allow all the employees inside the functional divisions of a company to
perform a set of specific assignments. Every department within a company is staffed with
employees that are knowledgeable in that specific field. For example, employees that specialize in

the Human Resources (HR) department stay in that sector of the company. It is a very
comprehensible system to keep the right people in the right place doing the job they are trained to

between the among the separate divisions. However, if an emergency were to arise, each division
would be able to respond accordingly. The second structure in project organization is the matrix

Kids have been playing competitive sports for decades. So why should they not be played? Kids
should play competitive sports because they teach important life lessons. Such as sportsmanship
and teamwork. One reason youth competitive sports teach lessons is they teach teamwork.
According to msu.edu, it states Sportsmanlike behavior is a lesson that children obtain from

obtaining sportsmanship from losing and winning. Also according to msu.edu, it states Children

Representation Of Cleopatra
Cleopatra V11, the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty of Egypt, reigned from 51BCE to 30BCE.
Historians face a number of challenges in building an accurate representation of Cleopatra due to
the minimal surviving Hellenistic sources that are outnumbered by Roman and Greek sources. She
was discredited by many Roman writers under Octavian s influence as she posed a threat to the
Roman empire due to her connections with Rome s most powerful men. Cleopatra manipulated her
physical representation to suit different beliefs and values to gain respect in Egypt and abroad.
This suggests Cleopatra s representation was primarily formed in response to her own ambitions
and those of others.
Octavian and Roman writers under his influence created a negative representation of Cleopatra
because she was a threat to the Roman empire due to her connections with the great Roman general,
Mark Antony. Octavian understood to garner the fealty of the Romans, it was important to slander
Cleopatra s name by shaping her image to go against cultural Roman beliefs and values. Ancient

slaves to a woman instead of a man. Dio should be used with caution as he was writing more than
two hundred years after the speech was given, however, he is useful in showing Octavian s intent
to discredit Cleopatra by exploiting her ethnicity and Roman prejudice that women with power
should be feared. Dio s reliability can be established through corroboration with ancient secondary
source, Florus. He recounts Cleopatra s demise and asserts: ... the queen throwing herself at Caesar

What Is The Difference Between Hinduism And Confucianism
Hinduism is a major religion in India as well as Nepal and a few other Asian countries. It has
more than 900 million followers throughout the world but interestingly, this religion has no single
founder, no single scripture and no single set of teachings that are uniformly believed and
followed by all Hindus. Hinduism is said to exist as a supreme being while both Buddhism and
Confucianism are based on the teachings of a man while Taoism revolves around a concept.1
(Kokemuller, J.) All of them have similarities and differences to a great extent. Buddhism is an
offshoot of Hinduism and it s founder Gautama lived the life of a Hindu. Both religions share a few
common features. Both religions originated in the Asian sub continent, both religions believe in
reincarnation and both believe that there can be different paths taken to attain enlightenment. Both
religions feel that we suffer from our attachment to worldly things and people. Both religions
believe in meditation and different forms of yoga.5 (C. Lester, R, 1993)... Show more content on

He loses interest in the world and doesn t even like contact from other people no phne calls, no

that the author finds so it so difficult to get jansen to open up to him. Jansen is the polar opposite

text. Jansen s atelier provides many clues about this character. His dГ©cor is minimalistic with
only a few sofa s and pictures in the room, whether this minimalism is by choice or by lack of

that he does not have much money, although later in the novel we learn that he frequently checks

track for discovering a bit about jansen and being able to pin him down in our minds, something
else will be uncovered which will discredit our theory entirely. In

Bound Feet Footbinding
For almost a thousand years, footbinding was passed down from generation to generation in China
as a tradition. For girls to get their feet bound was a rite of passage, usually starting around the age
of three to seven years old while the bones are still flexible. This custom was done for many
reasons, including beauty, eroticism, feminity, and subordination. Footbinding was the norm, as
were tiny waists in Victorian England. The difference is the pain during the binding as well as the
lasting effects that stayed with the girls through womanhood and until death.
It is said that footbinding originated as early as the Song Dynasty, who ruled from 960 until 1279.
By the twelfth century it was a common practice and became a custom. Bound feet ... Show more

Thorstein Veblen wrote, one rationale behind footbinding was to demonstrate the pecuniary
reputability of the male owner by showing that his woman was useless, expensive, and had to be
supported in idleness. For men, these tiny feet were erotic and seductive, their feet never touched
the dirt. Women wore elaborate shoes that were never taken off, even in bed, and men found this
satisfying. Men had a fetish to take the bandages or shoes off, it was symbolic for feminity and

Essay about The Football Player Duane Hanson
What force is so strong that it has the power to bring even the strongest man to his knees? What
force plagues the workforce at all hours of the day? What force prevents continuous work at all
times of the day, making us bow to the night as if to say We are not strong enough ? That force is
exhaustion, the most terrible and rarely conquerable force on earth. As I stood staring at such a life
like sculpture in the confines of a briskly chilly art museum corridor, I could only imagine the
amount of exhausted nights the sculptor had to endure to create his extremely exhausted
masterpiece. The sculptor Duane Hanson and his piece The Football Player most certainly shared
the same facial expression at one point in their existence, as to... Show more content on

The player shown holds the cup loosely with two fingers. Parallel to the physical state
exemplified in The Football Player , I located a similarly themed group of sculptures entitled
Korean War Veterans by Frank Gaylord on Artstor.org. The group of large sculptures is made up
of eight life size soldiers of the Korean war era. Dressed in rain parkas and grim faces while
holding their weapons, the soldiers show a generally exhausted state, most likely from their
constant battles. One soldier is pictured giving the lower ranking soldiers orders in their freeze
frame of war, with the others not even acknowledging their commands with eye contact, instead
staring straight ahead or into space. The soldiers all have quite exhausted expressions and
mannerisms, such as squinting eyes and slouched postures, which help to magnify their tired
states. The grey color of the unpainted stone also helps to darken the tone of the piece. The
parallels in the expressions of the various warriors shown in the two pieces on the football field
and on the battlefield brought up an intriguing idea to me. How does the body and mind respond to
the extreme levels of exhaustion caused by their respected stressful situations? How does a human
being survive in such an extreme environment without driving oneself over the edge? Exhaustion

What is a Volunteer Fire Department? A Volunteer Fire Department is composed of volunteers
who will perform fire suppression or other related emergency services for a local jurisdiction.
People should volunteer because people can save lives and they can save the houses from

There is nothing like the feeling of rushing down the slopes with the wind blowing by and the sun
shining down, as the landscape of the mountains outstretches before you. While traversing the
frigid ridge can be an exhilarating refuge from the routine of normal life, there are certain things
that must be known about the difficulty of the slopes. It is better to focus on the splendor of it all
rather than worry about making it down safely. To make slopes easier to identify, they are
categorized by colors and shapes that correspond with the difficulty of the terrain. American

These vary greatly in terrain and obstacles and can be found in many places. They tend to be on
the back side of the mountain, but getting to them is where it really varies. You may take an old
hidden ski lift, or come off a main lift to hike up a steep incline to get to the riskiest slopes.
Black diamonds are not for beginners, as they are almost always steep and quite narrow. You
will find obstacles on these, whether it be rocks or bumps, sharp turns, or through trees. Tree
runs could be a category of their own. The trees could be closely knit, or sparsely placed. It may
be a narrow singular path, or might be untouched completely. It s important to take turns if you

great, my favorite run is a drop off. This is a vertical drop about five feet down, followed by a
steep, powdery, challenging run. These are ones that you almost always have to hike to, and the
most dangerous slope requires a hike up a very steep incline. These are the only slopes I haven t

The First Woman Out Of Three
Ever since Darwin proposed the hypothesis that man and apes have common ancestry, the study of
Primatology has been a main focus in the world of science. Wether or not the scientist were
studying the relationship between ape and human or studying the basic way of life of apes, the
study of Primatology has proven to be controversial and the subject of ridicule to its early
pioneering scientists. In the past century, technology severely limited the study of primatology
which means the scientist had to resort to gorillatactics to study apes, and go into the jungle
themselves. So, scientist like Jane Goodall, Birute Galdikas, Eugene Dubois, and Raymond Dart
endured much ridicule at the time for their groundbreaking discoveries, but still paved the way for
modern day anthropologists. Scientists current understanding of apes and their relationship to

A Near Death Experience
Sometimes a little near death experience helps them put things into perspective ~Annie Shropshire.
Near death experiences can be scary. Many people have had near death experiences. A lot of near
death experiences have certain things in common that occur during and afterward. Some of these
things are: change in priorities, time distortion, and fear. These are the three most common things to

Change in priorities is the thing that you hold more important than any other thing in your life
changes to something different. After Tom Benecke had his near deathexperience he saw spending
time with his wife was more important than a piece of paper. As he saw the yellow paper, the

The Major Characters In Oedipus The King
In Sophocles tragedy Oedipus the King, Oedipus, the main character, goes through many
struggles that lead to his downfall as a leader and character. In the beginning of the play, the
Plague of Athens strikes, and many people are dying rapidly. Oedipus, being the king of Thebes,
is placed in charge of solving the problem. He relies on an the seer Tiresias to help him, and the
seer tells him that the plague will be stopped when the murderer of Laius is found and expelled.
Oedipusalso finds out that when he was born, the oracle told his parents that he was going to kill
his father and have an affair with his mother. In order to prevent this from happening, his parents
sent him off to Thebes where he was raised by a royal family. After inquiring for more information,
it becomes clear that Oedipus real mother is Jocasta, who he married without knowledge that she
was his mother, and his real father is Laius, who he killed on a crossroad years ago. Throughout
these occurrences, Sophocles alludes to major events and customs within Athens, and his writing
follows many common themes in Greek Mythology. Sophocles storyline in Oedipus the King
directly correlates with events and issues going on in Greece. This is evident through the major
theme of the Plague of Athens. The play takes place in 430 BCE, the same year that the plague hit
Thebes, Athens. Sophocles characters are terrified when the plague first hits as the black death

his/her gender, a leader is an individual that possesses the necessary characteristics that will make
or break his/her leadership. In her book, The Power of Latino leadership, Juana Bordas offers
culture based analysis of leadership. Although her book focuses on Latino culture, I find some
of the leadership principles that she offers, relevant in trying to define political leadership. For
example, Personalismo (The Character of the Leader) is a leadership principle that explores
leaders abilities to connect with people and embody traits that will exemplify trust and respect in
relation to their followers (Bordas 2013, 8). Juntos (we are together) describes the collective and
collaborative nature of leadership (Bordas 2013, 10). The leader works hand in hand with his/her
followers to achieve the desired common end results (Bordas 2013, 10).
These two principles presented by Bordas are strongly related to James MacGregor Burns account
of transforming leadership. He describes transforming leadership as a collective process where
leaders and followers empower each other to fulfill the wants and the needs of the people (Burns
2003, 2). Burns argues that deep and durable change, guided and measured by values, is the
ultimate purpose of transforming leadership, and

  • 2. The Invisible Empire Of The South Chris Folsom December 29, 2014 Facing History: KKK Persecutions The Invisible Empire of the South The practice of slavery has played a prominent role in American history and society. As early as 1619, our Colonial ancestors had used African slaves as a method of more efficiently harvesting crops and making a profit . The first North American colony to practice slavery was Jamestown, Virginia . John Rolfe introduced tobacco, a notoriously difficult crop to harvest, to the Virginia colony . The African workforce allowed the colony to more effectively harvest their tobacco plants and prosper . Slavery would remain a common practice in North America throughout the next three centuries . While the Northern states benefited from the advantages of a versatile, diverse economy, the Southern region remained primarily agrarian . Therefore, the necessity of slavery in the country varied disparately in the two continental regions. The South and their plantation economy depended upon slavery for a work force while the Northern economy would easily continue to flourish with its abolition. Spearheaded by William Lloyd Garrison, former slave Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman, the mid 19th century abolition movement and the desire to abolish peculiar institution would eventually divide the nation . A Balkan powder keg of our own, pro/anti slavery legislation, debates and compromises set the scene for regional division . Republican Abraham Lincoln s presidential election in November ... • 3. The Anzio Breakout Essay January 22, 1944 the sun is shining, and there is quite wind blowing across the beach of Anzio. In the next two days this beach will be covered in upwards of 30,000 allied troops and will see some of the bloodiest fighting of the war in the next four months. Anzio was originally supposed to be a distraction that Sir Alexander could use to breach the Gustav line. However, after a failure to immediately push towards Rome the allieswould be trapped in trench warfare and would be forced to breakout of Anzio. This was, simply enough, called the Anzio Breakout. The escape from Anzio was comprised of the plan and its flaw, the invasion, and the Breakout. The allied commander Sir Alexander felt that he would be unable to take Rome unless a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the next week the Allies moved in seven miles fighting off the scattered but increasing Germans. As the moved along the Anzio Albano Road toward Campoleone, they captured the town of Aprilia, which created a massive dent in enemy lines, but were unbale to breakout of the beachhead. Although they met some heavy resistance on the way to Cisterna and Littoria, that eventually halted their advance, they managed to increase their numbers, and built anti air guns impairing the German Luftwaffe. Despite their progress because they did not immediately drive towards Rome the Germans were able to recover and retaliate. Most of the German counterstrikes were random air raids on the snarl of trenches the allies had dug. The allies broken and weary from the random barrage of artillery were more then ready to escape the trenches of Anzio and head towards the capital Rome. They got their chance on May 12, 1944. On this date the Fifth and Eighth corps retaliated with their long anticipated offensive against the Gustav Line, finally allowing them to capture Cassino successively breaking the Gustav Line. Playing to the advantage of the turbulent status in the central mountains, and using an Allied artillery barrage, along with armor and infantry assaults along the Anzio, the Cisterna front was opened. General Tortious Liability Comparing And Contrasting NORTHERN REGIONAL COLLEGEHND BUSINESS 2012/13 Common Law I Assignment 2 Nelson Adaes 6/3/2015 Tort Law Task 3 Describe general tortious liability comparing and contrasting this to contractual liability Definition of Tort: According to Prof. P H Winfield, Tortious Liability arises from breach of a duty primarily fixed by law; this duty is towards persons generally and its breach is redressable by an action for unliquidated damages. Sir John Salmond defined Tort as a civil wrong for which the remedy is common law action for unliquidated damages and which is not exclusively the breach of contract or the breach of trust or other merely equitable obligation. In contrast, tort laws govern situations where one person has harmed or injured another person. Tort laws cover violations where the party intentionally harmed the other person, such as in a battery claim. Tort laws also address incidents where the party may be held liable even if they did not act intentionally, such as in negligence claims or strict liability claims. Tort laws usually result in the liable party paying the victim monetary damages to compensate for their losses. Both attract damages and some other remedies, for example injunctions. You may get more damages if sue in Tort, it will depend on the case. Explain what is meant by negligence and how an employer could be found liable in negligence Negligence Negligence is a common law tort, which has been developed though case law. Despite being a modern tort it is the most common. In order to prove liability in Negligence the claimant must show, on the balance of probabilities, that the defendant owed a duty of care, breached that duty by failing to meet the standard of care required and as a result the claimant suffered loss or damage which is not too remote. According to Jay M. Feinman of the Rutgers University School of Law; The core idea of negligence is that people should exercise reasonable care when they act by taking account of the potential harm that they might foreseeably cause to other people. • 5. Stone Breakers And The Stone Breakers The mid 1800 s in France was truly a period for challenging arising issues in the midst a great change. Gustave Courbet s The Stone Breakers and Jean Francois Millet s The Gleaners, are two paintings that use the style of realism to convey a unique perspective of the reality around them. (subjects, brush stroke, background) The Stone Breakers is a painting that was created in the year 1849, by French artist Gustave Courbet. This painting has the dimensions of 165 x 257 cm, and was done with the medium oil on canvas. Upon first glance, a viewer can see this work as two males doing that remove and break stone from a road that is being built. However, the painting s connotative meaning shows a man that appears to be too old and a boy that appears to be too young for such harsh labour. Courbet had made this decision with the intention of sharing his perspective on the reality of the abuse and deprivation that had occurred in French rural life during that time period. Courbet s intentions are significant because they display a truthful perspective while using ordinary people. Courbet refrained from using subjects of people who are wealthy, and live a more glamourous lifestyle, which was a norm for many french artists to incorporate in their work. The Stone Breakers is a painting that challenges the ideologies in society, and provide viewers with a new way of thinking towards the norms of labour in the society during the time period. • 6. The Social And Historical Context Of A Portrait Of The... In this essay response I shall discuss the social and historical context of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and My Son the Fanatic and how they enhance our understanding of the texts and then compare the two in their respective contexts. Religious extremism is a social ideology that is heavily implemented into both A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and My Son the Fanatic. With Steven Dedalus being subjected to his traditional family views of Catholicism as was the author of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce. Throughout the text Stephen is subjected to religious extremism, particularly in Chapter 3 when he attends Arnall s sermon, while on a religious retreat, in which he learns of Hell and sin, beleiving that God had allowed him to see the hell reserved for his sins and that the sermon is directed at him. This leads him to a part of his life where he followed the Catholic faith to an extreme degree, much like in My Son the Fanatic, whereby Ali devotes himself to the Muslim faith. At the time of publication, 1916, Ireland had seen events such as The Easter Rising in which Catholics rebelled against the British and the Protestants in a bid for independence. This mix of both the need for Independence and religious extremism are elements that we see portratyed through Stephen. Knowing this information we can see that Joyce portrays not only his own struggles with religion and independence using this method but also the conflict found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Behavior Modification And Its Effect On Behavior Essay Behaviors, are what people do and say, as humans, we notice how certain behaviors can be desirable but also undesirable. Though behavior modification, a person can attempt to alter a specific behavior by analyzing the behavior, and create a personalized plan to modify the behavior. When analyzing the behavior a person needs to decide if the behavior is either is in excess (to decrease the undesirable behavior) or deficit (to increase desirable behavior). Once behavior is the selected, then the person must decide if they desire to increase or decrease their behavior. Afterwards, the person needs to create a plan of action, this depends on their research design and recording method. The plan action is personalized for each study. Behavior modification allows a person to analyze a specific behavior and use a scientific technique to test if their treatment/intervention will modify their behavior. For example, I choose a target behavior to modify this semester which was studying. I had a behavioral deficit in studying that I desired to address, I wished to increase my time studying by twenty five percent. My definition of studying was any time (in minutes) that I dedicated to focusing on material necessary for my current classes, some examples are reading material for class, doing assignments for class (homeworkor essays), and reviewing material for exams (additional reading, notes, or index cards). • 8. King Henry VIII and The Reformation Martyrdom. The selfish king. A young monk. All played a significant part in the Reformation. Before the Reformation, the people of England were homogenous in their beliefs as they followed the Christian teachings of the Roman Catholic Pope. The Roman Catholic Church is an ancient Church, and changes have been made over centuries. Problems arose because of corruption in the church such as the political power of the Pope and the concept of indulgences. An indulgence can be described as paying a fee to buy forgiveness. At this time the Church was very powerful and persecuted anyone with differing beliefs including burning people at the stake for having what were supposedly heretical beliefs. King Henry VIII led the English Reformation by introducing a new church and bringing an end to the power of the Pope. Because of his love and study of the Word of God, Martin Luther launched the Reformation which reached all of Europe through his 95 Theses. Each of these events working simultaneously sparked religious unrest and contention; the Reformation began to materialize. The Reformation was a time of increasing religious diversity and tolerance. In spite of centuries of violence, religious tolerance can be found in England because of the lessons learned through the Catholic Protestant conflict during the Reformation. King Henry the VIII increased religious tolerance in England during the Reformation. From 1480 to 1530 before King Henry s reign, society in England was arguably ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The other modes of passenger transport are buses and coaches, cars and vans, motor cycles, pedal cycles and air. It should be noted, however, that since cycling is only suitable for very short distances, and air travel generally only becomes economic for journeys in excess of 300 km, rails principal competitor is the motor vehicle. Although rail usage has remained constant in passenger kilometre terms over the last decade, it has failed to keep pace with the growing demand for passenger travel and its market share has fallen accordingly. With bus and coach traffic showing identical behaviour, the beneficiary has inevitably been the car. Over the last 40 years the percentage of total traffic travelling by rail has fallen from 17% to 5.6%, while the percentage travelling by car has increased from 31% to 85,9%. • 11. Essay on The Power of Money in Campaign Finance It may seem that with the Buckley decision, soft money and PACs the hope for reform has been lost, however there is still hope. The Supreme Court upheld the voluntary public financing of presidential election, which was considered a great step forward because taking public funds requires the candidate to limit their spending on the federal level. There is also the hard money in political campaigns, which is strictly regulated by law through the Federal Election Commission. Hard money is the contrast to soft money meaning that it is the contributions made by a person or PAC that gives to a federal campaign or political party for the use in federal elections. But of course with one step forward there is always two steps back. Because of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, all means of legal cheating had been justified. PACs and overly wealthy individuals are not the only ones dipping their hands in the secretly jumbled world of campaign finance. Smaller interest groups and lobbyists are also getting their favors and paychecks. Because election laws are so crammed with exceptions these different groups can directly and openly support a candidate spending as much money as they would like. This loophole is referred to as independent expenditures. The Supreme Court cleared the way for smaller groups to work directly for or against a candidate, so long as the group does not coordinate its efforts with the candidate it supports. Although these expenditures tend to be a just a bit smaller then soft money funds, they are far more straightforward and blunt which proves to be even more effective (Anderson 2000). In my view, campaign finance has gone from something that could potentially help give the power of government back to the people to a complete joke. When trying to answer the questions of campaign finance you get a series of hidden meanings, jumbled definitions and no real answer to you questions, which is exactly the way Washington and campaign workers like it. The more bizarre and convoluted the rules are the more money each campaign can make. It seems that only way to find out any real information is to become a member of the inside, controlling the way campaigns really operate and change. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Analysis Of Margaret Cavendish s Baruch Spinoza A... There was another philosopher in the seventeenth century who has a similar system and a possibly more coherent system then Margaret Cavendish. Baruch Spinoza has a very unique monistic system. Spinoza lays out a system consisting of one infinite substance with infinite attributes. The two attributes which we can know are thought and extension. I will argue that the attribute of thought and the attribute of extension correlate well with Cavendish s animate and inanimate matter. I will argue that Spinoza s system is more coherent than Cavendish s and solves some of her system s issues. If it is that case that we desire a system similar to Cavendish s then Spinoza s system is a step in the right direction. Spinoza has a very unique style. He starts with clear definitions and axioms. The definition and axioms he lays out are things to which most philosophers in Europe at the time would have assented. He moves from these definitions and axioms to propositions and proofs. He will state a proposition, and he will immediately follow that with a proof of that proposition given the definitions, axioms, and already proven propositions. The part of Spinoza with which we are concerned is his argument for monism. The argument takes place in propositions one through fourteen. His ultimate goal is proposition fourteen: There can be, or be conceived, no other substance but God. By this he means that everything that exists, from humans to stars, are God. • 13. The Diversity Management Core Competencies Essay The two core competencies that have decide to write about are individual differences and leadership. These are two competencies that are extremely important on a daily basis, especially in the workplace. Individual differences are the variations from different individuals, such as culture, personality, perception, demographic factors, skills, and attitudes. It is important for individual differences to be recognized and taken into consideration when it comes to managing any organization. Leadershipis just as critical because it is the influence within an organization that has a meaningful impact. Leadership maximizes individuals efforts so key goals can be achieved. It is important to note that just because you manage an organization, that does not mean that you are leading the organization. In a way, leadership is also the ability to turn a vision into a reality. I chose these two diversity managementcore competencies because individual differences are something you see everywhere, whether it s in an organization, group or team, and leadership is something that no organization or group can have success without. I also chose leadership because my supervisor at work is a great leader and she is constantly leading by example, so I can relate to it personally and it is something I really respect and appreciate. The Supreme Court heard argument from both the senators who originally proposed the bill and from people concerned with the broadness of the act. In the opinion statement Justice Stevens said: The vagueness of the CDA is a matter of special concern for two reasons. First, the CDA is a content based regulation of speech. The vagueness of such a regulation raises special First Amendment concerns because of its obvious chilling effect on free speech. Second, the CDA is a criminal statute. The Disney classic focuses on a lovely young woman, the death of her mother, her father remarries then passes himself, and her stepmother being a vicious woman with two less than pleasant daughters who then treat the Cinderella as a slave in her own house. • 19. Analysis Of Film Production Of The Merchant Of Venice Film Review Michael Radford s 2004 film production of The Merchant of Venice provides a well executed and generally faithful rendition of Shakespeare s play. Radford s production especially succeeds in both its casting and set design that elevates the mood and drama contained in Shakespeare s text. In addition to the filming, particular attention was taken to following the original text, but some interesting in liberties in plot details were taken. Radford s production serves as an exemplar of film adaptions of Shakespeare s play; it takes the challenge of adapting the text to the screen with excellent casting, bold filming, and well imagined sets. Jeremy Irons as Antonio, the merchant, gives a convincing mix of optimism converted to pessimism as he prepares for his death in the court. Perhaps the best casting, Al Pacino plays an excellent Shylock that initially invokes the movie watcher s empathy then turns quickly into an enraged, psychopathic persona reminiscent to his characters in Scarface or Godfather. Particularly, Pacino shows off his talent in the famous Hath not a Jew eyes monologue where Pacino takes us through a full emotional range of compassion, sympathy, to scorching rage. Similarly, Radford uses this scene to show off his directorial chops: the scene uses a follow shot in which the camera follows Pacino s character as he crosses the dark Venetian streets, through a brothel to find Antonio s comrades, and back into the streets where the heart of his ... Historians face a number of challenges in building an accurate representation of Cleopatra due to the minimal surviving Hellenistic sources that are outnumbered by Roman and Greek sources. She was discredited by many Roman writers under Octavian s influence as she posed a threat to the Roman empire due to her connections with Rome s most powerful men. Cleopatra manipulated her physical representation to suit different beliefs and values to gain respect in Egypt and abroad. This suggests Cleopatra s representation was primarily formed in response to her own ambitions and those of others. Octavian and Roman writers under his influence created a negative representation of Cleopatra because she was a threat to the Roman empire due to her connections with the great Roman general, Mark Antony. Many people have had near death experiences. A lot of near death experiences have certain things in common that occur during and afterward. Some of these things are: change in priorities, time distortion, and fear. These are the three most common things to experience. Change in priorities is the thing that you hold more important than any other thing in your life changes to something different. After Tom Benecke had his near deathexperience he saw spending time with his wife was more important than a piece of paper. As he saw the yellow paper, the pencil flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and then closed the door behind him. Oedipusalso finds out that when he was born, the oracle told his parents that he was going to kill his father and have an affair with his mother. In order to prevent this from happening, his parents sent him off to Thebes where he was raised by a royal family. After inquiring for more information, it becomes clear that Oedipus real mother is Jocasta, who he married without knowledge that she was his mother, and his real father is Laius, who he killed on a crossroad years ago. It is very important to understand the theories that describe the major features of delinquents and the reasons of why certain persons engage criminal acts. Many people who re looking to migrate for a multitude of reasons and likewise governments throughout the world are looking to bring in people who add to the labour market and for cultural exchange purposes. I interviewed my French neighbour Pierre. His decision to move Australia on a working holiday visa (417 visa) was a combination of a desire to explore the world, find employment and that Australia was a willing participant for his migration. Paid under $20 an hour, he was made to work double the working week, of up to 80 hours a week, without breaks doing 12 hour shifts. Lorca s poem demonstrates how the narrator of the poem guides what the reader knows and does not know through the use of a first person point of view. The images and emotions experienced through narrator allows one to compare Lorca to a movie director or an editor. Lorca uses a first person point of view in order to demonstrate the lament for the dead as they deprived of the achievements that could have been theirs. One assumption is that Lorca is exploring his homosexuality under the conservative Spanish society. Lorca s powerful emotions and images throughout his poem enabling his readers to also experience what he experienced throughout the use of first person. One can make a strong argument that Lorca can be compared to a movie director or editor. Just like how a movie director chooses what scenes to shoot and how they are shot, Lorca chooses how he wants to portray the images and emotions throughout the poem. Throughout the third section of the poem Lorca laments on how Mejias losses out further achievements because of his early death. Lorca writes, All is finished. What is happening? Although contradictions and clashing expectations are part of life, they are especially present in the exercise of leadership (Cronin and Genovese 2012, 1). Political leadership is a broad multidimensional phenomenon that has been analyzed through various lenses; yet there is no one concrete definition. In the following response, I will present a brief overview of my interpretation through which I have come to understand political leadership and its importance. Although Sandberg s framework can be useful in the business world, I find that studying political leadership strictly from a gender based approach could be insufficient. Regardless of his/her gender, a leader is an individual that possesses the necessary characteristics that will make or break his/her leadership. In her book, The Power of Latino leadership, Juana Bordas offers culture based analysis of leadership. Although her book focuses on Latino culture, I find some of the leadership principles that she offers, relevant in trying to define political leadership. For example, Personalismo (The Character of the Leader) is a leadership principle that explores leaders abilities to connect with people and embody traits that will exemplify trust and respect in relation to their followers (Bordas 2013, 8). Juntos (we are together) describes the collective and collaborative nature of leadership (Bordas 2013, 10). The leader works hand in hand with his/her followers to achieve the desired common end results (Bordas 2013, 10). These two principles presented by Bordas are strongly related to James MacGregor Burns account of transforming leadership. He describes transforming leadership as a collective process where leaders and followers empower each other to fulfill the wants and the needs of the people (Burns 2003, 2). Burns argues that deep and durable change, guided and measured by values, is the ultimate purpose of transforming leadership, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
