The effect of this massive eruption traveled far beyond the small Indonesian island. It impacted
multiple and incredibly diverse aspects of society across Asia, Europe and North America. It
affected art, literature, transportation, climate, economies, health, opium production and even
American religion.
The volcano had been dormant for hundreds of years and this violent explosion lasted days,
sending ash into the atmosphere (D arcy Wood). At the time, there were both native villagers
living in the area and British officers, as the area was a colony under the British crown. Most of
the surviving records of the explosion come from these British officers, some of whom didn t
actually witness the explosion but heard it and assumed the explosion was from rebels on the
island. A captain of a nearby East India Company ship reported ash falling out of the sky and By
noon, the light that had remained in the eastern part of the horizon disappeared, and complete

subject, Sir Thomas Raffles, was the governor of Java, Indonesia. His compiled record of first

Hate crimes are criminal infractions in which the victim is targeted due to his or her actual or
perceived demographic status, that is, their race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation,
or national origin. Unlike many other violent crimes, hate crimes have an effect on both the
immediate target and the communities of which the individuals are a member. As such, research
(Herek, Gillis, Cogan, 1999; McDevitt, Balboni, Garcia, Gu, 2001) has shown that victims of
violent hate crimes may suffer from more psychological distress, that is, depression, stress,
anger, anxiety, among other psychological related concerns more than victims of other violent
crimes. The purpose of this paper is to explore a subtopic of forensic psychology that is not
commonly discussed, that is, bias crimes or hate crimes. In order to explore this topic, an
examination of several aspects related to it will ensue, including a detailed review of the effects
hate crimes have on victims, the effects hate crimes have on communities, people who are risk of
being victims, the perpetrators of hate crimes (whether they are individuals or part of hate groups),
an overall inquiry of hate motivated offending as well as the different types, and lastly, addressing

Dahl develops suspense throughout The Landlady by introducing an unfamiliar location for

Between the two books, Farewell, My Lovely and The Maltese Falcon, we find many similarities
from the purpose of the plot to the characters within. Both books are a fan of the hardboiled
detective and are set within the state of California. The main characters of both books share
many different traits that define them as hardboiled detectives. To be a hardboiled detective one

Abstract
Al Qaeda is arguably the most well known and most dangerous Islamic terrorist organization in the
world. It was established around 1990 by a Saudi millionaire, Osama Bin Laden, to bring together
Arabs who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion. The goal of the organization is to
reestablish the Muslim state throughout the world. Al Qaeda works with allied Islamic extremist
groups to overthrow regimes it deems non Islamic and remove Westerners from Muslin countries.

These plots included the bombings of the African Embassies in 1998 and the September 11, 2001
attacks. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks against America, American led forces toppled
the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Approximately half of the senior Al Qaeda leadership was
captured during the American led campaign, along with crippling the group s communication
network. The exact size of Al Qaeda is unknown, but the group likely has several thousand
fighters. The estimated numbers of people who trained in camps or fought in Afghanistan
ranges from 20,000 to 60,000 but these are not all Al Qaeda members. Al Qaeda serves as an
umbrella organization that carries out its own terrorist acts as well as a focal point for other
extremist groups. Some experts believe that Al Qaeda is an organization in transition. The losses
of many of the group s leaders and their base in Afghanistan have disrupted the organization.
While Al Qaeda s definitive structure is unknown, experts fear that the organization can continue
to operate if they lose senior leaders due to the entrepreneurial spirit in its lower level fighters. Al
Qaeda is a network with global reach and is reinforced by its ties to Sunni extremist networks.
