For my global engagement event, I attended the showing of the film, Disruption, followed by a
brief discussion session. This movie aired at Global Commons sponsored by the Office of
Sustainability at Elon University, specifically their student Eco Reps. The event began at seven o
clock on Tuesday, September 19th.
This film depicts the devastating effects of human activity in modern society on the environment
resulting in global climate change creating extreme weather events such as floods, tornadoes,
droughts, and hurricanes. Change in Earth s overall temperature is difficult to conceptualize
because its long term effects do not present urgency in most people s minds; consequentially, the
film discloses the lack of concern for environmental issues throughout government agencies and
most citizens. Even with the recent international industrial pledge to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions, the objectives are poorly defined and lack the intensity to reverse the damage.
Incorporating both the scientific and governmental explanation of climate change, the film
illustrates the tremendous positive impact civilian activists can accomplish. For example, the
activists are planning the first major climate change march and rallying local citizens behind a

My colleague, Alison Guest, and I were assigned to travel to Rome to visit the beautiful
Colosseum where we needed to record out findings and reveal the history of the structure. We

history behind the Colosseum. Being a new archeologist, it is mandatory to travel all over the
world to cites to get a better understanding of history. Before traveling to Rome, I knew very little of
the Colosseum. I knew it was made of cement and destroyed but I did not know much of the

The method of learning I best understand is observational learning because I am definitely more
of a visual learner. Graphs, charts, and experiments are some of the more visual things that help
me learn best. Besides school though, I know observational learning has helped me immensely in
the sports I have done like cheerleading and gymnastics. I always need someone to show me how
to do the tumbling pass or demonstrate how the cheer routine is done to really understand and
internalize what I need to do. If someone tried to explain just using words how to do a certain

Tone is a device used by authors in order to evoke emotions in their audience. The tone can be
anything but it greatly effects how the reader receives the message of the piece. For example I
analyzed two different poems, both with the same subject but with very different tones. The way I
received each poem was very different. The first, by Richard Lovelacetitled To Lucastahad a
passionate tone while the second poem by Wilfred Owen titled Dulce et Decorum Esthad a cynical
tone. The tones of these poems were created using similar literary devices but their results were
very different.
While short, Richard Lovelace says much through the tone in his 17th century poem To Lucasta.
At first glance the poem seems very organized with 3 stanzas each with 4 lines. Every other line
rhymes, which gives the audience a feel of playfulness and whimsy. One would assume that the
message of the poem would also be just as organized. However, the speaker seems to be battling
with feelings of regret and excitement. The overall tone of this poem seems to be apologetic yet
passionate. The speaker is apologetic about his decision to go to war but also seems to be
passionate and enticed by the thoughts of his new adventure. Lovelace uses imagery and figure
of speech to create this tone by depicting his life before the war and his life during the war as two

The day my life flashed before my eyes started as though it was any other day at the Technology
Student Association State Conference. The day started out with anticipation and excitement for the
competitive events held that day. The only competitive event I was to participate in was the
Electrathon race, which was scheduled for later that afternoon. The Electrathon Race is an event
where we race student designed go kart sized vehicles that are powered by two twelve volt
batteries. The point of the race is to see how many laps you can go in one hour on one battery
charge. Even though I was not competing in an event that morning, I still had to dress in khaki
pants, a polo shirt, and closed toed loafers to enter and attended the conference sessions. Leaving
my hotelroom and stepping onto the elevator, I was ready for the day.

Coretta Scott King was an activist who had a major impact on those around her. For Coretta s
funeral, her sister, Maya Angelou wrote Coretta s eulogy. The eulogy first mentions Coretta s

by explaining her background as an African American woman who was born in a small town and
loved everyone and everything no matter their difference in this world. Maya then describes her

audience through pathos is using humor that will help the audience relax. First, Maya told the
audience that they would call each other girl because it was a black woman thing to do, she told
the audience that in their 70th decade they still said it (Angelou, n.d., para. 9). Maya also brings
humor into the argument when she told the audience that she would tell her sister jokes that were
