Tiktaalik Research Paper
The picture of the cover of the magazine features Tiktaalik, a creature that is intermediate
between fish and primitive land living animals. Tiktaalik has fish like characteristics with scales
on its back as well as fins with fin webbing. However, it also has a flat head and a neck similar to
early land living animals. Inside the fin, one can also see bones that correlate with the parts of
the wrist, forearm, and upper arm. All of this is inside a fin with webbing. Shubin once dissected
a cadaver, but was never emotionally attached to it until he dissected the hand. It was when he
unwrapped the hand did he come to the realization that this hand once belonged to a living person
who used it to move and touch. Later on in his career, Shubin discovered Tiktaalik which revealed
the early stages of the parts of our hand evolving: the finger area, palm, and wrist. Shubin
expressed that seeing the wrist of a fishwas just as worthwhile as unwrapping the fingers of the
cadaver because during both times, he uncovered a deep relationship between his humanity and
another being. Sonic hedgehog is a gene named by fly geneticists Tabin, McMahon, and Ingham.

Essay on Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
In 1818 a novel was written that tingled people s minds and thrilled literary critics alike.
Frankenstein was an instant success and sold more copies than any book had before. The
immediate success of the book can be attributed to the spine tingling horror of the plot, and the
strong embedded ethical message. Although her name did not come originally attached to the text,
Mary Shelley had written a masterpiece that would live on for centuries.
Nearly 200 movies have been adapted from the text since the birth of Hollywood. Most recently
though (1994), is Kenneth Brannaugh s rendition entitled Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Although
Brannaugh makes a spectacular attempt to emulate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book is written as a frame narrative, but this sort of presentation is almost impossible to
reproduce on screen. Robert Walton s letters to his sister, and the monster s long autobiographical
narratives were both omitted from the film for this reason. A big asset to narrative voice is the
reader acquires a more thorough impression of the charter s thoughts and feelings. Without the use
of this literary tool, Brannaugh had to rearrange scenes, add dialect where there was none before,
and depend on the superb theatrical ability of the actors.
The movie starts off very true to the text with Walton s ship becoming logged in the ice in the
arctic. Despite some minor changes, the film follows the book pretty closely until the death of
Frankenstein s mother is described. In the novel, she contracts scarlet fever after caring for
Elizabeth, and died calmly...her countenance express[ing] affection even in death (Shelley, 72).
In the movie, she collapses while dancing with Victor, and soon after dies while giving birth to
his brother William. This scene is filled with screaming, blood and gruesome images as the
mother dies in a fit of pain and agony. Victor runs into his mother s room and is met by the site
of her covered in blood and lain strewn on a broken chair. He then proceeds to throw himself on top
of her and cry bring her back, oh

Analysis Of Sia Furler s Chandelier
A woman s work is never done: many people grow up with this saying and feel it to be true. One
such woman, artist Sia Furler, has written countless number one music hits, and she argues that
while society teaches us only young people can enter the mainstream music scene, you can still be
successful at an older age. Sia begins building her credibility by sharing personal accomplishments
as she enters the music scene, then goes on to cite convincing personal stories, and successfully
employs emotional appeals through her music debut; however, her dramatic entrance leaves you
wondering whether her attempt to appealto listeners attention weakens her credibility as an artist.
Throughout her era of new music, Sia uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and logical
progression of ideas. As her single Chandelier hits number one, people started to wonder who the
girl behind the wig really was. She gives them facts of her past that bring them to like her even
more, going on to reveal that she s written number one hits sung by other artists. On the cover of
a billboard magazine Sia has a paper bag on her head with a message written on it saying, This
artist is responsible for over twelve million track sales, has a new single on the hunger games
soundtrack, and doesn t want to be famous...
Sia uses logos to entice mystery, giving out facts that only make listeners more obsessed with
finding out who she is. This may be one of the most important aspects of Sia advertising her new
music. A video titled ten songs you didn t know were written by Sia gains millions of views. All
this attention and mystery only drive up sales of the new single.
Adding to her logos appeal, Sia uses strong sources that strengthen her credibility and appeal to
ethos. She goes on to cite personal stories from her past that suck in the listener and gains their
trust. I was a pill popper, the hit maker shared with OK! Magazine, revealing that she became
dependent on Xanax and OxyContin, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Sia hasn t yet revealed what she looks like but people everywhere already have a since of
credibility. This feeds the audiences values, who have discovered that Sia is a former drug addict
who is now

Mental Health Issues In Social Media
2.2The situation now Looking back at how the stigma surrounding mental illness impact on
people in results of media portrayal, there is an urgent need in reducing stigma and raising
awareness in order to prevent social discrimination of people with mental illness and to encourage
those with mental illness to speak up what they are going through. Patrick Corrigan Illinois
Institute of Technology psychologist stated that it was as bad as it is 20 years ago (Yuhas, 2014).
Benefiting the convenience of social media in our today s world, Betton, Borschmann, Docherty,
Coleman, Brown and Henderson (2015), taking into account the capability of social media in
overcoming this matter. Due to the explosion of new technology, modern info spectrum is now a

Nevertheless, instead of focusing on being aware of mental illness, they are terrified of it.
Repeated use of negative and inaccurate images of mentally ill individuals, mental health
professionals and also psychotherapy leads the society to discriminate these group of people.
This problem is getting worst from time to time and it needs to be reduce. The incorporation of
campaign in social media as a medium to raise awareness regarding this matter I seen as a
promising avenue in stigma reduction as it improves the condition, hence breaking down the
stereotypes (Research and Development Cooperation, 2012). One of the latest campaigns done by
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City which is #IWILLLISTEN, has a
positive feedback. If more people join in raising consciousness about this matter, there will be an
opportunity for the everyone to change public attitudes towards mental health through social media

Disregarding the semi tables that display the process of calculations, the first column of my table
depicts the average amount of DDT ingestion for each and every species. Since I knew the
formula to get the said data, I was able to process this column with comparably more ease than the
other ones. The second column depicts the amount of energy for one species under each category.
For example, only one phytoplankton contains 200 kcal within its body. Likewise, that column of
my table depicts the amount of energy that each individual of the species have within their bodies.
The next column, column C, shows the total amount of energy for each and every categories
through kcal. For instance, there are 100 phytoplanktons in the lake. Each phytoplankton contains
200 kcal of energy within their bodies. Therefore, if you multiply 200 with 100, you get the total
amount of energy which is 20000. The last column basically illustrates the name of the trophic level

Symbolism In A Tale Of Two Cities By Charles Dickens
The wine of the aristocrats was made by the vine; the wine of the peasants was made by the
guillotine. The novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens presents this all too real society,
and the story of a group of brave and loving people who live in it. All throughout the novel, the
symbolism of wine as blood is pushed upon us, starting out during a seemingly joyous occasion:
a cask of wine is dropped outside of a wine shop and it breaks open allowing the impoverished to
get wine out of the muddy puddles in the streets. This scene within itself seems oddly out of place
in the story it doesn t really do much to introduce any characters, it isn t really important to the
plot that this specific cart dropped wine, etc. however, this scene is no less violent than the
beheadings and mobbs. You see, the real violence in this seemingly innocent scene is not in the
actual events, but in the meaning behind it. A shrill sound of laughter and of amused voices voices
of men, women, and children resounded in the street while this wine game lasted. There was little
roughness in the sport, and much playfulness. There was a special companionship in it, an
observable inclination on the part of everyone to join some other one, which led, especially among
the luckier or lighter hearted, to frolicsome embraces, drinking of healths, shaking of hands, and
even joining of hands and dancing, a dozen together. When first reading this passage we haven t
really heard much about wine,

Kingyo By Edmund Yeo
Kingyo (which means goldfish in Japanese) is a short film by the Malaysian filmmaker Edmund
Yeo. It is based on Yasunari Kawabata s 1924 short story Canaries . He s previous efforts, which
include short films like Chicken rice mystery , Fleeting images and Love suicides showcased his
talent effectively. While in Kingyo , his first Japanese language short film, it s clearly visible that he
has only taken his talent in the forward direction. The film, which wonderfully depicts love, loss
and memorie,s has the ability to have a longing effect on the audiences even after it s finished.

Throughout the movie, we see frequent montages of the city and get accustomed with its vibrant
nature. Yeo crafted the story with utmost care, deliberately setting it to a slow, rhythmic pace to
match the intensity and mental state of the characters. The characters do not converse much,
instead they choose the path of contemplation and confession, trying to revisit their past.
His wonderfully written dialogues help to create a calming influence on the film, which reveals the
depressing nature of the characters. For example, when the woman asks the man if he still enjoys
his work he says:
Sometimes you get used to things. After fifteen years it s not a matter of whether you like it or not.
You just forget about the tiny details.
The term tiny details is closely related with the flow of the movie as we see the band members,
who the director shows for a brief moment towards the start of the film, appearing again at the end
of the movie, which indicates the director s desire to come full circle. The same applies to the time
when a certain anime picture of a maid merges with the female

Crowd American Dream

Although the United States of America was considered a relatively new country, as it has only
been independent for a mere 176 years during the release of the film The Crowd, the economy
was booming with an abundant of job opportunities; yet if you look closer it is extremely
difficult to move forward in life, as The Crowd depicts the common man as a replaceable, faceless
worker that is forced to suffer while the world moves on to an uncertain future. One of the earliest
forms of big businesses in the United States of America were trusts, a separate legal entity. From

John Sims, the protagonist, proclaims as a child, My Dad says I m goin to be somebody big!
This is a reference to the American Dream, where people think they are special and are going to
have many opportunities on their path to become successful. As John grows older, he becomes
worker 137, a single worker in a crowd of identical and faceless businessman. John was just one
of the seven million people who believe they can make it in New York. This scene showcases
how there was no individualism and no social mobility. Everyone was doing the same thing, in
identical desks with identical sheets of paper, making it hard to differentiate one from another.
In another scene, it shows Mary Sims, John s wife, making a list of what to with the money John
received for winning a contest. The first of which was Back Bills at $220, showing the audience
that this family was in debt. Mary also occasionally tells John to make more money as she is
unsatisfied with this current paycheck. This scene represents how many families will never have
enough to survive in this economy or be satisfied with what they have as the people of the United
States believe you can always have more money. The film ends with a scene of men in identical
suits rocking back and forth, with John and Mary getting lost in the crowd, which represents how
the people are such a small part of the society and can be easily

The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Eye
The human eye is a wonderful organ enabling us to perform all our daily tasks. The sense of
sight allows to do almost all activities. There are countless activities including studying, cooking,
driving, or playing an instrument. Other tasks that vision is helpful for would be communicating,
working, making life a lot easier, which are very essential. Most people would agree that vision
is more valuable than the rest. The eyes allow us to interpret colors and shapes. This happens after
a long complex process, starting from the reflect of light on the objects to the eyes and ends up in
the brain as images. Having a healthy eyeis very important and improves the quality of a person s

The other two portions in this layer are the choroid, the posterior and vascular portion which
supplies blood to all layers and the ciliary body which is a ring of muscles around the lens used
to focus the lens. The lens has a flexible structure that can change shape to precisely focus light on
the retina. The Retina is the very interior layer which consists of two layers. The pigmented outer
layer which absorbs light and prevents scattering. And the Neural layer composed of bipolar cells,
ganglion cells and two types of photoreceptors.
The eye is protected by a cushion of fat and a bony orbit surrounding the eye s anterior part. There
are also accessory structures that protect the eye and help maintain the eye s function. These
accessory structures include the eyelids, eyebrows, lacrimal apparatus, conjunctiva, and the
extrinsic eye muscles. The eyebrows function is to shade the eye from sunlight and keep out
perspiration from reaching the eye. The eyelids contains the nerves that initiate reflex blinking, and
protects the eye s anterior part, because it contains eyelashes at the edges, which prevents debris or
small particles like dust or sand from entering the eye. It also contains lubrication glands to keep the
eye moistened, such as tarsal glands and ciliary glands. The Conjunctiva is a transparent membrane
which also produces mucus. Next, the lacrimal consists of the lacrimal gland and ducts which

GE the most valuable company in the world. He was described as the most important and

Loyalists Dbq Essay
The American Revolution was the revolution of the American colonies against Britain, it s
mother country. The Continental Congress, a group of delegates from each colony, voted in
favor of the Revolution on July 1st, 1776. They were tired of Britain taxing them and not treating
them as proper citizens of Britain, and decided to break away from Britain and emerge as an
independent country. There are few reasons that colonists would choose the Patriot side or choose
the Loyalist side during the Revolutionary War. 2 reasons for colonists to support Britain is that
Britain had the upper hand militarily and financially, and the Patriots were acting barbaric towards
a loyalist just because he supported King George. 2 reasons for a colonist to support the Patriots

2.2 Local Capabilities Australia is a competitive market. The strength and success of local brands

Competition China dominates the Australian import market due to its low cost. This has
increased the pressure on local firms to compete on price. This has resulted not only in a

Information about the topic.
Animal abuse.
Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the human infliction of suffering

it can be harm for specific gain, such as killing animals for food or for their fur, although opinions

Henry Spira a seaman activist became one of the most important in the United States. In a gradual
measure, he founded the Animal Rights International in 1974. The organization is not working any

this chapter. For example, when authors pick names, there s usually a purpose behind it. In this
case, the characters used in this book provide significance to the characteristics each character will
possess as it connects to the Bible. Ahab and Ishmael are both names that are found in the Bible
and have a specific persona or purpose. Also, many allusions to the Bible are found in Moby Dick
as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Andy is the only one who knows he didn t do it. This struggle provides parallels to
Greek writing based on the struggles Andy must face. For example, because he tries to escape
prison, Andy is seen as someone who s trying to return home, just like Odysseus. Also, Andy
desires to have his name cleared because he knows he s innocent. This struggle parallels to the one
Achilles must battle, which is trying to maintain one s dignity.
Chapter 9: It s More Than Just Rain and Snow
Main Ideas:
1.It s never just rain
2.Weather is used as a plot device
3.Atmospherics rain can be mysterious, murkier, and more isolating than other weather
4.Democratic element falls on the just and unjust man alike; forces circumstances to unfold
Connection: Again, in Shawshank Redemption, when Andy escapes from prison, he s found
walking through the rain. Just like what the chapter says, the rain that Andy is walking through is
very symbolic. What the rain implies is that Andy is now cleansed and free from prison. Andy is
now a new man due to the fact he can live without being trapped by the false guilt the court system
bestowed on him. Being cleansed by this rain makes Andy think of how grateful he is to have
escaped.

Essay On The Hundred Years War
One of the longest conflicts in the history of warfare, the Hundred Years War was a time that
defined history for both England and France. The war lasted from 1337 until 1453 passing over
one hundred years and reaching a total of one hundred and sixteen years. It began in May 1337
when King Philip VI of France tried to confiscate English territories located in Southwestern
France and it then ended in July 1453 when the French finally expelled the English from the
continent. In the one hundred and sixteen years time span, there were about sixty eight years of
peace, and forty four years of a series of battles full with raids, sieges, and naval battles. Like many
other wars, it did not achieve anything except for destruction, disorder, and the misery of the
common people living in these events, though it marked the start of early modern times for
England and France. (Bishop) Although the war started in 1337, the roots trace back all the way to
the reign of William the Conqueror. When William the Conqueror became king in 1066. He
launched an invasion of England from Normandy, his territory within France. He then in the Battle
of Hastings came out victorious and he united England with Normandy... Show more content on

Indentured Servants Research Paper
Although many African Americans landed in Virginia in 1619 as slaves, in 1608 most
emigrants (who were mainly male) wanted to come to the New World by crossing the Atlantic
Ocean so badly that they agreed to become indentured servants. Those who were called Slaves
were there to serve for life while those who were called Indentured Servants only served for a
certain term. According to American Stories the amount of years that needed to be served
depended on the person s age; those who are younger get a longer term, while those who are
older, like nineteen, only get about five years. Many African Americans were called slaves because
of their servitude; and many were born into slaverybecause of the status follows the womb . Many

A Taxonomy For Evaluating Business Data Visualizations
A Taxonomy for Evaluating Business Data Visualizations
Submission Type: Emergent Research Forum Papers
Introduction
We are creating data in enormous quantities primarily because of improvements in data capture
technologies. But much of this data are underused or never being used. A detailed analysis of this
underused data is often impractical due to time, personnel, and other resource constraints. Data
visualization techniques offer a good means of taking an immediate look at this data for exploring
the underlying relationships then analyzing relationships and finally understanding the knowledge
embedded in the data. While there is an increased interest in Business and Data Analytics and
related areas, it appears that efforts to evaluate their contributions are lacking. The need for
developing an unified framework for evaluating the data visualizations is of paramount importance.
A special issues just devoted to this topic of evaluating visualizations exploring its complexities
(Bertini, E., Lam, H., Perer A., 2011) highlights its importance further.
The present study builds on these attempts to consider the contribution of various visualization
technologies by applying the ideas already presented established frameworks. To present our case,
we first define business data visualization and then justify Bloom s Taxonomy as a possible
approach to think of the contributions business data visualization projects and finally show
example of how to apply our proposed

Health Disparities And Communication Disorders
Health Disparities and Communication Disorders
Courtney Barringtine

Abstract Currently in the Unites States, Americans are struggling to maintain quality health without
proper healthcare. As a result, health disparities have become a widespread epidemic plaguing
minorities. Many of the various health disproportions stem from the government s inequality and
racism. In other cases, genetics and socioeconomic status may cause health disparities. Overall,
these disparities may be avoidable or unavoidable depending on the individual. Recently, health
disparities have begun to implicate the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Speech

An article in Psychology Today explains that currently minorities become ill at younger ages, suffer
from more severe illnesses and die earlier than Whites (Lyubansky, 2013). Currently, minorities of
low socioeconomic status (SES) suffer from more health discrepancies than any other race in the
United States. Research has shown that these health disparities against all minorities have begun to
implicate all medical professionals including speech pathologists. Among minorities such as Asians,
Hispanics, Indians, Native Americans, and Middle Easterners, the African American race has been
affected tremendously by the health disparities in the United States. Currently, African Americans
have significantly higher mortality rates from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, cancer,
diabetes, HIV, unintentional injuries, pregnancy, sudden infant death syndrome, and homicide than
do whites Americans (Fiscella Williams, 2004). While African Americans may lead in these
categories, other minorities are not far behind in experiencing health disparities.
Causes
Biochemical theories have said to be a leading cause of health disparities in minorities. Various
research sources confirm that genetics plays a role in the prevalence of disparities among
minorities. Family traits such as metabolism, passed down illnesses, and life expectancy may cause
an individual to acquire poor health

Influence of Apple on Society
Influence of Apple
There is an incredibly small amount of companies that can claim part in completely changing a
consumer market. Even less can claim part in changing society. On the prestigious list of companies
who can make legitimate arguments for both of these groups, one stands out among the rest. Apple
Inc. has completely revolutionized society as well as their own market. Apple changed the entire
market of personal computers, innovating beyond what people even dreamed of, and Steve Jobs,
redefining the definition of a CEO. Apple is an iconic American company that is making a lasting
impression on society through their products and their story.
Part One: History of Apple
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak first created Apple Inc. privately as Apple Computers. Both kept
themselves close to the most up to date technology of the time. Steve Wozniak began attending
meetings with the Homebrew Computer Club. New microcomputers were being presented at the
Homebrew meetings and Wozniak was inspired to build his own personal computer. The only
microcomputer CPU s available at the time were $170 $179 which translates to $745 $785 today.
Steve Jobs happened to be at that Homebrew meeting and approached his old friend to discuss his
product. Wozniak first designed the product as a hobby. He wanted to be able to innovate
technology and push forward toward future technology. Jobs, however, was also interested in
innovating technology, but was more focused on the business

Before the age of twenty he had made great observations in mechanics. He observed, a chandelier

This observation prompted Galileo to being his experiments, validating his theories and providing
factual evidence to back his notions. During 1595 Galileo had taken a compass design invented
by Niccolo Tartaglia and Guidobaldo del Monte and by 1598 he had improved it making it more
accurate he had created a geometric and military compass by today s standards. Not only this but
with the use of Galileo s flotation principles he invented a thermoscope which was later used as a

speed of light. In which he and an assistant stood on two hilltops, holding a lantern with a shudder.
When one opened the shutter the other would open his shutter. This took place with a distance of
less than a mile and Galileo did not detect a delay in the time greater that when they were only
meters apart. Although there was no conclusion to this experiment, Galileo thought that the
distance between the hilltops and that perhaps the distance was too small for a worthy

Trials and Tribulations of a Homosexual Essay
The history of the gay rights movement has been a hard fought battle within the United States. In
fact the first gay rights movement dates back to 1924 with the creation of The Society for
Human Rights in Chicago, Illinois. It wasn t until the 1960 s that gay rights started to make
progress. In the year 1969 The Stonewall Riots took place when gay, lesbian, and transgender
patrons of a New York bar were raided by the police. This forever changed the movement from
isolated incidents to a world wide phenomenon.
As generations proceeded, institutions such as the American Psychiatric Society began to classify
homosexuality as a disease, which was later retracted in the 1970 s and was no longer considered a

manner in which they do. Students today learn words such as queer and fag all too soon and teach
other students to tease and taunt those who may possess slightly feminine characteristics this in
turn causes the said student to have absolutely no self esteem and to view his or herself in a
unhealthy and unnatural way. Complete acceptance of homosexuality will probably never be

than heterosexuals, such as anti gay bullying within school systems, various types of

As a child they must deal with certain factors that they cannot change no matter how hard they

Internationalization refers to the increasing importance of international trade, international relations,
treaties, alliances.2.
Regionalisation means a less interconnected world , with a stronger regional spirit. (Mercosur for
example).
A definition of Globalisation would be that : Globalisation typically refers to the process by which
different economies and societies become more closely integrated3.
Another definition would be that: Globalisation describes a process by which national and regional
economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through the global network of trade,
communication, immigration and transportation. 4
According to those definitions, globalisation seems to be a process that creates an international
market for goods and services, that creates a rise of standardised norms and social behaviour, that
facilitated centralisation of international politics through supranational entities such as the United
Nations, the World Bank or the World Trade organisation.
Looking towards history, markets has been increasingly integrated to a global market, which was
followed by the spread of ideologies (liberalism, democracy, capitalism, human right).

Real And Nominal Gdp Forecast
Real and Nominal GDP Forecasts Taking on account the historical data provided in the forecasts
developed by our Economic Research Group, we compared this year s forecasts with the
performance of the economy in the past using gross domestic product. Gross domestic product,
measures the monetary value of final goods and services that is, those that are bought by the final
user produced in a country in a given period of time (say a quarter or a year) according to the
International Monetary Fund. Based on this comparison, we determined that there has been a
steady increase in gross domestic product (GDP) in terms of Current Dollars, but there is a
fluctuation between quarters under Chained Dollars GDP. Current Dollars, also known as Nominal
GDP, accounts for inflationchanges and uses current market prices while Chained Dollars, known
as Real GDP, remove the effects of inflation in its calculation and use prices from a base year.
Using this data, we can project the real growth rate for 2006 will decrease 2.56% quarterly, and
10.25% within the year, shown in Exhibit 2b. We calculate the average growth rate using Real
GDP because in the United States the growth rate that the BEA reports is a quarter on quarter
growth rate, which is the growth in real GDP from one quarter to the next, according to The Motley
Fool. These percentages tell us that there has been a significant drop in real growth rates due to
consumer confidence falling for the second month straight.

Self-Disciveness And Benefits And Self Awareness In The...
Many people may wonder what self awareness is and how it can benefit and individual in their
workplace. Before you being wondering how self awareness ties into your workplace, first ask
yourself these four questions: Do you consider yourself to be mindful? Do you understand why
you behave the way you do? Are you aware of what happens around you while at work? If you can
t answer these questions or you re not happy with your answers to these questions then this is when
you start to think about self awareness. Self awareness is the capacity for introspection and the
ability to reconcile oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. In
other words, self awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including your
strengths and weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, what motivates you, and last but not least your
emotions. Studies show that people who are aware of their behaviors and emotions are more
effective in their work. Self awareness requires a strong commitment to study and analyze your
behaviors and characteristics and make preparations for modifications as you see fit.
Self awareness is important in every part of your life. It means that you have a clear understanding
of who you are as an individual and how you can relate to the world that we live in today. It is
important in a workplace because when you are aware of your strengths and weakness and why
you behave and feel the way you do, you will then know how to better manage

manifest more concern for an interpersonal relationship than men (Eagly and

show a more democratic (or participative) style, which facilitates collaboration, and less autocratic

Conversely, male leaders were more likely to involve two other aspects of transactional

Romantic Impact On Napoleon
Napoleon Bonaparte and the wars he fought against Great Britain, the conveniently named
Napoleonic Wars had a lasting and profound impact on British citizens and society. Napoleon for a
brief period had transformed a nation of anarchy and instability into the most powerful empire in
Europe and posed a serious threat to Britain s perceived dominance and invulnerability. The fear of
a Napoleonic invasion spread across Britain, an event that had it been realised may have been
welcomed by many within the nation. The French general turned emperor was unquestionably the
British governments most imposing enemy but there were many individual Britons who held
Napoleon in much higher esteem than their own monarch/Regent. The British nation was divided...

He notes that the Lake poets originally revered Napoleon but as the wars continued they became
increasingly conservative and critical of him. He recalls that William Wordsworth s primary
reason for his disillusionment with Napoleon was his 1804 coronation, other Romantics such as
Samuel Taylor Coleridge however, were not so clear about their reasons for resenting Napoleon
and Stock states that this inability to decide upon a definitive opinion characterizes the
Romantic understanding of Bonaparte because the transition from reverence to hatred was so
extreme and unexpected. Like radicals and loyalists, the Romantics also offered different
interpretations of Napoleon in their works especially on the concept of his humanity .
Coleridge, Walter Scott and Robert Southey believed Napoleon to be an innovative politician
and therefore, very human, while Percy Bysshe Shelley too regarded Napoleon as human but
believed his political genius was a fallacy as he merely reverted France back to monarchy;
whereas Lord Byron considered Napoleon to be a metaphysical being. Stock states that the
Romantics also make quite extensive use of Satan when interpreting Napoleon and Coleridge and
Scott classify him as evil incarnate to the point where they desire his death. Stock argues that
some Roamntics such as William Hazlitt used the Satanic image of Napoleon to personify him as
a revolutionary figure inverting political norms. Despite previously denigrating him as a mere
politician, Coleridge too personifies Napoleon as a presence rather than a human being and Stock

The London Inter Bank Lending Rate
Introduction
LIBOR, the London inter bank lending rate, is considered to be one of the most important interest
rates in finance, upon which trillions of financial contracts rest. The London Interbank Offered Rate
( LIBOR ) is often called the world s most important number,
As well as helping to decide the price of other transactions, it is also used as a measure of trust in
the financial system and reflects the confidence banks have in each other s financial health.
Libor acts as the rate at which the world s most preferred borrowers are able to borrow money,
and as an indicator for less preferred borrowers. The Libor is not important for just financial
institutions, but is also relevant to the common man. This benchmark for short term interest rates is
used for retail products such as college loans, credit card rates, student loans, and adjustable rate
mortgages which is roughly a ten trillion dollar market.
History
Begining of the 1980s, the London financial market saw an increasing number of banks actively
trading new instruments. As attractive as these new instruments like the forward rate agreement
seemed to the banks, they were apprehensive of the rates which had to be agreed upon before
entering a contract. To solve this problem, the banks turned to the British Bankers Association
(BBA) to create a uniform measure which could act as a benchmark for the new instruments. This
uniform rate had the ability to facilitate the operation of markets and allow more

Essay about Transformation of Homewood West Community
Homewood West is located on the eastern side of Pittsburgh and is one of the three neighborhoods
that make up the Homewood community, along with Homewood North and Homewood South.
Homewood West was once a thriving neighborhood with an abundance of upper class families and
an economy that depended heavily on the city s railroad system, that made economic opportunities
readily available and housing that was affordable and convenient (Allegheny County DHS 2010).
African Americans were the first to inhabit Homewood, However many whites moved into the
neighborhood, causing tension within the community, during a time period where racism was still
a major factor in society. According to the Allegheny DHS (2010), by 1910, Homewood s

Now, Homewood West has a total population of 818 people, which has steadily declined since the
1950 s (U.S. Census 2010). This transformation has had some major effects on this neighborhood,
making economic opportunities hard to find. A lack of quality education, and high crimerates have
caused businesses to leave the area, creating vacant buildings and broken down homes, lowering
the value of properties and the hopes of bringing businesses back to the community. Residents in
Homewood are affected by all these things and have the community at a standstill, looking for ways
to fix them.
Demographics and Crime
My first perception of Homewood made me a little nervous about the idea of going into a
neighborhood with such a high crime rate, especially being a kid from a suburban area with
mostly white middle class families. Going into a neighborhood that was 95.6 percent black was
definitely out of my comfort zone (U.S. Census 2010). My perception of Homewood quickly
changed however, once I started to talk to people there. To my surprise, many were well educated
and very welcoming, and ambitious people, striving to make the community better. Many of them
noted the issues in the neighborhood, and stated that they had a lot of work to do but they made me
leave Homewood West with hope.
As I started my journey into Homewood, I made my way down Franktown Avenue past the
YWCA I started to see differences from the city and why a lot of residents are struggling to make

Critical Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The Hopeless Romantic: Elizabeth Barrett Browning
In the poem How do I love thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Browning asks how she loves
her beloved and goes on to list the ways in which she loves him. Her love is seen as eternal and
exists everywhere which brings to light the tone and styling of the poem and how it fits in the
movement it was written in. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, Durham,
England. (Poetry Foundation) During the time of her writings, she was seen as one of the most
influential poets for the Romantic Movement. Romantics focused on nature, human feelings and
compassion, and rebelling for a cause, which Browning shows a lot of throughout her sonnet.
Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall in Durham, England. She was a romantic writer but
it closely reflected the life she was living at the time. The oldest of twelve children, Elizabeth
was the first in her family born in England in over two hundred years. For centuries, the Barrett
family, who were part Creole, had lived in Jamaica, where they owned sugar plantations and
relied on slave labor. (Poetry Foundation) Elizabeth s father, chose to raise his family in England,
while his fortune grew in Jamaica. Educated at home Elizabeth apparently read passages from
Paradise Lost and a number of Shakespearean plays, among other great works, before the age of
ten. By her twelfth year, she had written her first epic poem, which consisted of four books of
rhyming couplets. In 1826 , Elizabeth anonymously published her collection An Essay on Mind
and Other Poems. Two years later, her mother passed away and the slow abolition of slavery in
England and mismanagement of the plantations depleted the Barrett s income. Elizabeth s father
moved his family to a coastal town and rented cottages for the next three years before settling
permanently in London. Her father did not allow his children to marry, having them work on the
plantations in Jamaica instead. Gaining attention for her work in the 1830s, Elizabeth continued to
live in her father s London house, not by choice however. He began sending Elizabeth s younger
siblings to Jamaica to help with the family s estates. Elizabeth opposed of slavery and did

Bodies, Machines, and Male Power by M. Carme Alemany Gomez
I chose to write my reflection paper on reading number twenty two Bodies, Machines, and Male
Power. This chapter is written by M. Carme Alemany Gomez. This article talks about washing
machines, and how most people only think the value of a washing machine is cleanliness. This
article shows that there are diverse ways in which how genderand class, affect the design,
operation, and construction of washing machines in Spain. Also how technology reinforced these
relationships. They talk about the process of washing clothes when males designed the
machines. Women had to learn the very movements that she must do repeatedly while using the
machine. If women were given a voice during the beginning stages perhaps the technology
would have been designed differently. When someone is designing or building a technology,
they make decisions about some details that affect the users. As we all know the washing
machine has been around for quite some time. The models we see today have taken at least 40
years of work and changes to get to where they are today. This study is approached by three
theories they expected to see class and gender relations in the life of a machine. Second they drew
off a Chinese tradition of thought. Third gender relations were saw as a set of power relationships
that not only involve the construction of values, but also constitute a process of bodily submission,
as evidence in postures, gestures and movements (Gomez Pg. 390). According to the most recent

The Opera Rigoletto At The Metropolitan Opera
The opera Rigoletto at the Metropolitan Opera was conducted by Pablo Heras Casado. The
three principal singers were Piotr Beczala as the Duke, Zeljko Lucic as Rigoletto and Olga
Peretyatko as Gilda. This being my first opera, I was surprised by how large and grandiose the
house was, which is in sharp contrast to my typical experience when I see musicals. The production
decided to place a modern twist on the setting of the opera, rather than the original setting of 16th
century Italy, the story is placed in Las Vegas in the 20th century. The set is constructed to
reflect that in the first act with a casino scene complete with neon lights, card tables and roulette.
In my opinion, this all seemed to distract the viewer from the story and the change in setting didn
t enhance the production itself. Rather it made me think about how out of place this all was
instead of focusing on the opera itself. The first act was fairly difficult for me to suspend
disbelief and get into the plot of the opera. This had much to do with me being initially turned off
by the casino as the setting for this opera. Although in later acts I was able to move past the
modern set that was only because this set became less pronounced in the second and third acts.
Now moving on to the aria s the three I will be focusing on will be the Aria from the Duke La
Donna e Mobile, Bella figlia dell amore, and Della vendetta alfin giunge lВґistante . These scenes
effectively move the audience through their repetition

Vertical integration in studio system Essay
Vertical integration in studio system
The term vertical integration refers to the structure of a marketplace, which is integrated (rather
than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels. In the case of the motion picture industry, the studio
system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets,
and theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top
down, from production to exhibition.
Vertical integration began in the 1910s and inspired the postwar consolidation of the studio system
as national distribution companies, such as Paramount merged with production companies, such as
Famous
Players and Lasky and subsequently began purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majors owned only a fraction of the nation s theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these
theaters were large, first run houses and located in big cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the
box office receipts.
The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by
instituting a series of special distribution practices. These were known as block booking, blind
bidding, runs, zones, and clearances.
Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they
have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they contracted with the distributors before the film
has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure
called blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good.
As a result of the system the new films will be first rented to the first run theaters of which the
majority was owned by the studios, and then its shown in the second run and sub run theaters
after a clearance time of about 7 30 days (to renew demand). Distribution is also guided by a system
of zones; only one theater in any particular area is allowed to show a new picture.
The dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the U.S. Department of
justice s Antitrust Division filed suit against the 8 studios for the use of their monopolistic methods

Childhood Stereotypes In Childhood
There s a stereotypical childhood that is presented through the media and though no persons
childhood is perfect, I wanted to maintain at least one aspect of that stereotype. Growing up, I
despised the thought of moving away to where it would take me out of the school system that I
grew up with. The irony being; I later moved away from the state I was born and raised in. The
obstacles leading up to that move and the outcomes that occurred afterwards had allow me to grow
as a person.
Every family has its flaws because no family is perfect. However, when you re looking through the
eyes of a child, you don t label them as flaws right away. Therefore, they become your definition of
perfect because you ve became accustomed to them. For me, ... Show more content on

When moving to a new location everybody has this impression: new friends, new opportunities,
and new experiences. A fresh start. These impressions did surface my thoughts when traveling to
my new home and the anticipation of them were nerve racking. The whole moving process was
exhausting due to the fact we drove for about ten hours from Maryland to Alabama. Living in
Alabama is very different than up there in Maryland because there s a different culture . Which
didn t help when I was feeling home sick but since Atlanta was about an hour a way, I would go
there and some aspects of the city reminded me of home. I remember starting school here and I
felt like all eyes were on me probably because I was attending classes that were above my grade
level. That is because the classes I had in Maryland transferred over and also because I stood
out. I kept to myself that freshman year because I was trying to get the lay of the land and when
sophomore year came about, I ve made some friends. However, my anxiety was slowly starting to

Penn State Scandal During The O. J. Simpson Trial
When the Penn State scandal was made public nationally, it appeared to be similar to when the
O.J. Simpson trial began 1993. It was very controversial and the more it was exposed the greater
outsiders continued to become more eager to see what the outcome would be. Jerry Sandusky was
almost on the same level as Coach Joe Paternobecause he had been an assistant football coach as
well as a staff member for the University for thirty years. Sandusky was well known throughout
the community due to his charitable organization, The Second Mile, which was set up to help

Different Types of Competition
Pure Competition: Pure competition involves number of companies or firms manufacturing
similar or identical goods. In such pure competition the firms have no control over the prices.
These companies are often termed as Price Takers . The pricing strategy is no in hands of the
company it is determined by market forces. The firms operating in a pure competition
manufacture standardized products which do not offer them a chance to differentiate their
products on the basis of some unique feature of the product. The firms also do not spend on
advertising their products because of the standardized nature of the products the firms
manufacture. The demand of the products in pure competition is perfectly elastic. This principle
maximizes the productivity by efficiently allocating the resources in the right areas. The firms do
not have any market power as they have no or very little impact on the overall market structure.
In order for a firm to maximize the profits the pricing strategy that is used is cost plus pricing
where the firm charges the consumer for the cost and the per unit profit that they like to charge on
the basis on the basis of market analysis. (Akerlof, 1970) The pricing strategy does not play an
integral role in the development of the business in pure competition therefore other strategies
contribute more to the success of a company. The firm has to spend heavily on research and
technology in order to lower their costs than their competitors. In this way the

Roseville Incident Summary
Earlier this week, on Memorial Day, police officers in Roseville, California arrested a gang of
seven men for allegedly touching several young girls inappropriately at a local waterpark.
Curiously, though, the various media outlets that have reported on the incident have all effectively
covered up what sort of people would target 14 year old girls in a group and then abuse them like
they did by leaving out some key information about the suspects backgrounds.
Specifically, law enforcement officials with the Roseville PoliceDepartment recently took seven
men into custody and charged them with committing lewd and lascivious acts with children under
the age of 14 and conspiracy to commit a crime for reportedly touching several young girls ... Show

These guys were I think they were acting up because they were getting saved in all the pools. I
don t know if they could swim they acted like they couldn t swim, Rodgers explained.
So far, however, the police department, the waterpark, and all of the various media outlets covering
the incident have refused to release any information about the suspects backgrounds, like whether or
not the gang of men migrated here from another country, and if so, whether or not they came here
legally, that has been released to the public.
Despite this, based on their conduct and the other information available, it s highly likely that they
migrated either legally or illegally to the United States from another country. Although this hasn t
been confirmed, it s highly likely because similar instances of gangs sexually abusing young girls
has been seen in Europe and most of the perpetrators of the abuse are believed to be migrants.
Sadly, it s quite common for young children to be sexually abused by

  • 2. Tiktaalik Research Paper The picture of the cover of the magazine features Tiktaalik, a creature that is intermediate between fish and primitive land living animals. Tiktaalik has fish like characteristics with scales on its back as well as fins with fin webbing. However, it also has a flat head and a neck similar to early land living animals. Inside the fin, one can also see bones that correlate with the parts of the wrist, forearm, and upper arm. All of this is inside a fin with webbing. Shubin once dissected a cadaver, but was never emotionally attached to it until he dissected the hand. It was when he unwrapped the hand did he come to the realization that this hand once belonged to a living person who used it to move and touch. Later on in his career, Shubin discovered Tiktaalik which revealed the early stages of the parts of our hand evolving: the finger area, palm, and wrist. Shubin expressed that seeing the wrist of a fishwas just as worthwhile as unwrapping the fingers of the cadaver because during both times, he uncovered a deep relationship between his humanity and another being. • 3. Essay on Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Mary Shelley s Frankenstein In 1818 a novel was written that tingled people s minds and thrilled literary critics alike. Frankenstein was an instant success and sold more copies than any book had before. The immediate success of the book can be attributed to the spine tingling horror of the plot, and the strong embedded ethical message. Although her name did not come originally attached to the text, Mary Shelley had written a masterpiece that would live on for centuries. Nearly 200 movies have been adapted from the text since the birth of Hollywood. Most recently though (1994), is Kenneth Brannaugh s rendition entitled Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Although Brannaugh makes a spectacular attempt to emulate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book is written as a frame narrative, but this sort of presentation is almost impossible to reproduce on screen. Robert Walton s letters to his sister, and the monster s long autobiographical narratives were both omitted from the film for this reason. A big asset to narrative voice is the reader acquires a more thorough impression of the charter s thoughts and feelings. Without the use of this literary tool, Brannaugh had to rearrange scenes, add dialect where there was none before, and depend on the superb theatrical ability of the actors. The movie starts off very true to the text with Walton s ship becoming logged in the ice in the arctic. Despite some minor changes, the film follows the book pretty closely until the death of Frankenstein s mother is described. In the novel, she contracts scarlet fever after caring for Elizabeth, and died calmly...her countenance express[ing] affection even in death (Shelley, 72). In the movie, she collapses while dancing with Victor, and soon after dies while giving birth to his brother William. This scene is filled with screaming, blood and gruesome images as the mother dies in a fit of pain and agony. Victor runs into his mother s room and is met by the site of her covered in blood and lain strewn on a broken chair. He then proceeds to throw himself on top of her and cry bring her back, oh ... • 4. Analysis Of Sia Furler s Chandelier A woman s work is never done: many people grow up with this saying and feel it to be true. One such woman, artist Sia Furler, has written countless number one music hits, and she argues that while society teaches us only young people can enter the mainstream music scene, you can still be successful at an older age. Sia begins building her credibility by sharing personal accomplishments as she enters the music scene, then goes on to cite convincing personal stories, and successfully employs emotional appeals through her music debut; however, her dramatic entrance leaves you wondering whether her attempt to appealto listeners attention weakens her credibility as an artist. Throughout her era of new music, Sia uses strong appeals to logos, with many facts and logical progression of ideas. As her single Chandelier hits number one, people started to wonder who the girl behind the wig really was. She gives them facts of her past that bring them to like her even more, going on to reveal that she s written number one hits sung by other artists. On the cover of a billboard magazine Sia has a paper bag on her head with a message written on it saying, This artist is responsible for over twelve million track sales, has a new single on the hunger games soundtrack, and doesn t want to be famous... Sia uses logos to entice mystery, giving out facts that only make listeners more obsessed with finding out who she is. This may be one of the most important aspects of Sia advertising her new music. A video titled ten songs you didn t know were written by Sia gains millions of views. All this attention and mystery only drive up sales of the new single. Adding to her logos appeal, Sia uses strong sources that strengthen her credibility and appeal to ethos. She goes on to cite personal stories from her past that suck in the listener and gains their trust. I was a pill popper, the hit maker shared with OK! Magazine, revealing that she became dependent on Xanax and OxyContin, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Sia hasn t yet revealed what she looks like but people everywhere already have a since of credibility. This feeds the audiences values, who have discovered that Sia is a former drug addict who is now ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Mental Health Issues In Social Media 2.2The situation now Looking back at how the stigma surrounding mental illness impact on people in results of media portrayal, there is an urgent need in reducing stigma and raising awareness in order to prevent social discrimination of people with mental illness and to encourage those with mental illness to speak up what they are going through. Patrick Corrigan Illinois Institute of Technology psychologist stated that it was as bad as it is 20 years ago (Yuhas, 2014). Benefiting the convenience of social media in our today s world, Betton, Borschmann, Docherty, Coleman, Brown and Henderson (2015), taking into account the capability of social media in overcoming this matter. Nevertheless, instead of focusing on being aware of mental illness, they are terrified of it. Repeated use of negative and inaccurate images of mentally ill individuals, mental health professionals and also psychotherapy leads the society to discriminate these group of people. This problem is getting worst from time to time and it needs to be reduce. The incorporation of campaign in social media as a medium to raise awareness regarding this matter I seen as a promising avenue in stigma reduction as it improves the condition, hence breaking down the stereotypes (Research and Development Cooperation, 2012). One of the latest campaigns done by The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City which is #IWILLLISTEN, has a positive feedback. If more people join in raising consciousness about this matter, there will be an opportunity for the everyone to change public attitudes towards mental health through social media ... The second column depicts the amount of energy for one species under each category. For example, only one phytoplankton contains 200 kcal within its body. Likewise, that column of my table depicts the amount of energy that each individual of the species have within their bodies. The next column, column C, shows the total amount of energy for each and every categories through kcal. For instance, there are 100 phytoplanktons in the lake. Each phytoplankton contains 200 kcal of energy within their bodies. Therefore, if you multiply 200 with 100, you get the total amount of energy which is 20000. • 8. Symbolism In A Tale Of Two Cities By Charles Dickens The wine of the aristocrats was made by the vine; the wine of the peasants was made by the guillotine. The novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens presents this all too real society, and the story of a group of brave and loving people who live in it. All throughout the novel, the symbolism of wine as blood is pushed upon us, starting out during a seemingly joyous occasion: a cask of wine is dropped outside of a wine shop and it breaks open allowing the impoverished to get wine out of the muddy puddles in the streets. This scene within itself seems oddly out of place in the story it doesn t really do much to introduce any characters, it isn t really important to the plot that this specific cart dropped wine, etc. however, this scene is no less violent than the beheadings and mobbs. You see, the real violence in this seemingly innocent scene is not in the actual events, but in the meaning behind it. A shrill sound of laughter and of amused voices voices of men, women, and children resounded in the street while this wine game lasted. There was little roughness in the sport, and much playfulness. There was a special companionship in it, an observable inclination on the part of everyone to join some other one, which led, especially among the luckier or lighter hearted, to frolicsome embraces, drinking of healths, shaking of hands, and even joining of hands and dancing, a dozen together. When first reading this passage we haven t really heard much about wine, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yeo crafted the story with utmost care, deliberately setting it to a slow, rhythmic pace to match the intensity and mental state of the characters. The characters do not converse much, instead they choose the path of contemplation and confession, trying to revisit their past. His wonderfully written dialogues help to create a calming influence on the film, which reveals the depressing nature of the characters. For example, when the woman asks the man if he still enjoys his work he says: Sometimes you get used to things. After fifteen years it s not a matter of whether you like it or not. You just forget about the tiny details. The term tiny details is closely related with the flow of the movie as we see the band members, who the director shows for a brief moment towards the start of the film, appearing again at the end of the movie, which indicates the director s desire to come full circle. The war lasted from 1337 until 1453 passing over one hundred years and reaching a total of one hundred and sixteen years. It began in May 1337 when King Philip VI of France tried to confiscate English territories located in Southwestern France and it then ended in July 1453 when the French finally expelled the English from the continent. Victor awakens in the spring when the monster is gone and nature begins a new year of life. Victor s biggest mistake is his ambition. By playing God and controlling nature, trying to preventing death, Victor starts a series of misfortunes for himself and the people he loves. Victor and the monster struggle to find their places in the world and look toward nature for comfort and guidance. Nature cures Victor several times from near death. When Victor creates the monster he realizes what he has done and becomes extremely sick. Before you being wondering how self awareness ties into your workplace, first ask yourself these four questions: Do you consider yourself to be mindful? Do you understand why you behave the way you do? Are you aware of what happens around you while at work? If you can t answer these questions or you re not happy with your answers to these questions then this is when you start to think about self awareness. Self awareness is the capacity for introspection and the ability to reconcile oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. In other words, self awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including your strengths and weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, what motivates you, and last but not least your emotions. During the late 20th century, the world has witnessed all sorts of social and technological changes due to globalisation (Bologun, Sutherland and Oswick, 2015). In fact, the breakdown of the traditional family division of labour, instant communication through technology, and the increased complexity of organisational objectives have favour gender equality and diversity. Those changes have pressure companies to improve their work structure to be more competitive and to the extent that the idea of an effective leadershiphas come under pressure to change too. However, women manifest more concern for an interpersonal relationship than men (Eagly and Johannesen‐Schmidt, 2001). Moreover, using Blake and Mouton (1964) framework, women show a more democratic (or participative) style, which facilitates collaboration, and less autocratic (or directive) style, that don t enhance followers creativity. Thus, according to the contemporary standard, women manifested more appropriate traits for being an effective leader. Furthermore, Eagly and Carli (2003) also conclude that female leader were more transformational and applied contingent reward behaviours which is one of transactional leadership component. Conversely, male leaders were more likely to involve two other aspects of transactional leadership which are active management by exception (waiting for a follower s mistake to corrected it) and passive management by exception (waiting for issues to become severe before solving it). Men also show a relatively high interest in laissez faire leadership. That different categorization of leadership style became popular by Burns in 1978 and then Bass in 1985. • 39. Romantic Impact On Napoleon Napoleon Bonaparte and the wars he fought against Great Britain, the conveniently named Napoleonic Wars had a lasting and profound impact on British citizens and society. Napoleon for a brief period had transformed a nation of anarchy and instability into the most powerful empire in Europe and posed a serious threat to Britain s perceived dominance and invulnerability. The fear of a Napoleonic invasion spread across Britain, an event that had it been realised may have been welcomed by many within the nation. The French general turned emperor was unquestionably the British governments most imposing enemy but there were many individual Britons who held Napoleon in much higher esteem than their own monarch/Regent. He notes that the Lake poets originally revered Napoleon but as the wars continued they became increasingly conservative and critical of him. He recalls that William Wordsworth s primary reason for his disillusionment with Napoleon was his 1804 coronation, other Romantics such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge however, were not so clear about their reasons for resenting Napoleon and Stock states that this inability to decide upon a definitive opinion characterizes the Romantic understanding of Bonaparte because the transition from reverence to hatred was so extreme and unexpected. Like radicals and loyalists, the Romantics also offered different interpretations of Napoleon in their works especially on the concept of his humanity . Coleridge, Walter Scott and Robert Southey believed Napoleon to be an innovative politician and therefore, very human, while Percy Bysshe Shelley too regarded Napoleon as human but believed his political genius was a fallacy as he merely reverted France back to monarchy; whereas Lord Byron considered Napoleon to be a metaphysical being. Stock states that the Romantics also make quite extensive use of Satan when interpreting Napoleon and Coleridge and Scott classify him as evil incarnate to the point where they desire his death. Stock argues that some Roamntics such as William Hazlitt used the Satanic image of Napoleon to personify him as a revolutionary figure inverting political norms. Despite previously denigrating him as a mere politician, Coleridge too personifies Napoleon as a presence rather than a human being and Stock states Hazlitt celebrates Napoleon as an Idea not an ... • 40. The London Inter Bank Lending Rate Introduction LIBOR, the London inter bank lending rate, is considered to be one of the most important interest rates in finance, upon which trillions of financial contracts rest. The London Interbank Offered Rate ( LIBOR ) is often called the world s most important number, As well as helping to decide the price of other transactions, it is also used as a measure of trust in the financial system and reflects the confidence banks have in each other s financial health. Libor acts as the rate at which the world s most preferred borrowers are able to borrow money, and as an indicator for less preferred borrowers. The Libor is not important for just financial institutions, but is also relevant to the common man. This benchmark for short term interest rates is used for retail products such as college loans, credit card rates, student loans, and adjustable rate mortgages which is roughly a ten trillion dollar market. History Begining of the 1980s, the London financial market saw an increasing number of banks actively trading new instruments. As attractive as these new instruments like the forward rate agreement seemed to the banks, they were apprehensive of the rates which had to be agreed upon before entering a contract. To solve this problem, the banks turned to the British Bankers Association (BBA) to create a uniform measure which could act as a benchmark for the new instruments. This uniform rate had the ability to facilitate the operation of markets and allow more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Essay about Transformation of Homewood West Community Homewood West is located on the eastern side of Pittsburgh and is one of the three neighborhoods that make up the Homewood community, along with Homewood North and Homewood South. Homewood West was once a thriving neighborhood with an abundance of upper class families and an economy that depended heavily on the city s railroad system, that made economic opportunities readily available and housing that was affordable and convenient (Allegheny County DHS 2010). African Americans were the first to inhabit Homewood, However many whites moved into the neighborhood, causing tension within the community, during a time period where racism was still a major factor in society. Now, Homewood West has a total population of 818 people, which has steadily declined since the 1950 s (U.S. Census 2010). This transformation has had some major effects on this neighborhood, making economic opportunities hard to find. A lack of quality education, and high crimerates have caused businesses to leave the area, creating vacant buildings and broken down homes, lowering the value of properties and the hopes of bringing businesses back to the community. Residents in Homewood are affected by all these things and have the community at a standstill, looking for ways to fix them. Demographics and Crime My first perception of Homewood made me a little nervous about the idea of going into a neighborhood with such a high crime rate, especially being a kid from a suburban area with mostly white middle class families. Going into a neighborhood that was 95.6 percent black was definitely out of my comfort zone (U.S. Census 2010). My perception of Homewood quickly changed however, once I started to talk to people there. To my surprise, many were well educated and very welcoming, and ambitious people, striving to make the community better. Many of them noted the issues in the neighborhood, and stated that they had a lot of work to do but they made me leave Homewood West with hope. As I started my journey into Homewood, I made my way down Franktown Avenue past the YWCA I started to see differences from the city and why a lot of residents are struggling to make ... • 42. Critical Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning The Hopeless Romantic: Elizabeth Barrett Browning In the poem How do I love thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Browning asks how she loves her beloved and goes on to list the ways in which she loves him. Her love is seen as eternal and exists everywhere which brings to light the tone and styling of the poem and how it fits in the movement it was written in. Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England. (Poetry Foundation) During the time of her writings, she was seen as one of the most influential poets for the Romantic Movement. Romantics focused on nature, human feelings and compassion, and rebelling for a cause, which Browning shows a lot of throughout her sonnet. Browning was born in 1806 at Coxhoe Hall in Durham, England. She was a romantic writer but it closely reflected the life she was living at the time. The oldest of twelve children, Elizabeth was the first in her family born in England in over two hundred years. For centuries, the Barrett family, who were part Creole, had lived in Jamaica, where they owned sugar plantations and relied on slave labor. (Poetry Foundation) Elizabeth s father, chose to raise his family in England, while his fortune grew in Jamaica. Educated at home Elizabeth apparently read passages from Paradise Lost and a number of Shakespearean plays, among other great works, before the age of ten. By her twelfth year, she had written her first epic poem, which consisted of four books of rhyming couplets. In 1826 , Elizabeth anonymously published her collection An Essay on Mind and Other Poems. Two years later, her mother passed away and the slow abolition of slavery in England and mismanagement of the plantations depleted the Barrett s income. Elizabeth s father moved his family to a coastal town and rented cottages for the next three years before settling permanently in London. Her father did not allow his children to marry, having them work on the plantations in Jamaica instead. Gaining attention for her work in the 1830s, Elizabeth continued to live in her father s London house, not by choice however. He began sending Elizabeth s younger siblings to Jamaica to help with the family s estates. Elizabeth opposed of slavery and did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Carme Alemany Gomez. This article talks about washing machines, and how most people only think the value of a washing machine is cleanliness. This article shows that there are diverse ways in which how genderand class, affect the design, operation, and construction of washing machines in Spain. Also how technology reinforced these relationships. They talk about the process of washing clothes when males designed the machines. Women had to learn the very movements that she must do repeatedly while using the machine. If women were given a voice during the beginning stages perhaps the technology would have been designed differently. When someone is designing or building a technology, they make decisions about some details that affect the users. As we all know the washing machine has been around for quite some time. The models we see today have taken at least 40 years of work and changes to get to where they are today. This study is approached by three theories they expected to see class and gender relations in the life of a machine. Second they drew off a Chinese tradition of thought. Third gender relations were saw as a set of power relationships that not only involve the construction of values, but also constitute a process of bodily submission, as evidence in postures, gestures and movements (Gomez Pg. 390). This being my first opera, I was surprised by how large and grandiose the house was, which is in sharp contrast to my typical experience when I see musicals. The production decided to place a modern twist on the setting of the opera, rather than the original setting of 16th century Italy, the story is placed in Las Vegas in the 20th century. The set is constructed to reflect that in the first act with a casino scene complete with neon lights, card tables and roulette. In my opinion, this all seemed to distract the viewer from the story and the change in setting didn t enhance the production itself. Rather it made me think about how out of place this all was instead of focusing on the opera itself. The first act was fairly difficult for me to suspend disbelief and get into the plot of the opera. This had much to do with me being initially turned off by the casino as the setting for this opera. Although in later acts I was able to move past the modern set that was only because this set became less pronounced in the second and third acts. Vertical integration in studio system Essay Vertical integration in studio system The term vertical integration refers to the structure of a marketplace, which is integrated (rather than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels. In the case of the motion picture industry, the studio system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets, and theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top down, from production to exhibition. Vertical integration began in the 1910s and inspired the postwar consolidation of the studio system as national distribution companies, such as Paramount merged with production companies, such as Famous Players and Lasky and subsequently began purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majors owned only a fraction of the nation s theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these theaters were large, first run houses and located in big cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the box office receipts. The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by instituting a series of special distribution practices. These were known as block booking, blind bidding, runs, zones, and clearances. Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they contracted with the distributors before the film has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure called blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good. As a result of the system the new films will be first rented to the first run theaters of which the majority was owned by the studios, and then its shown in the second run and sub run theaters after a clearance time of about 7 30 days (to renew demand). Distribution is also guided by a system of zones; only one theater in any particular area is allowed to show a new picture. The dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the U.S. Department of justice s Antitrust Division filed suit against the 8 studios for the use of their monopolistic methods ... In such pure competition the firms have no control over the prices. These companies are often termed as Price Takers . The pricing strategy is no in hands of the company it is determined by market forces. The firms operating in a pure competition manufacture standardized products which do not offer them a chance to differentiate their products on the basis of some unique feature of the product. The firms also do not spend on advertising their products because of the standardized nature of the products the firms manufacture. The demand of the products in pure competition is perfectly elastic. This principle maximizes the productivity by efficiently allocating the resources in the right areas.
