Introduction
This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered
exploring the influences of these my life and how these have altered my view on
what is environmental sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will

The first experience I had was travelling through an area called Baynton about
100kms north east of Melbourne early in 2009. It was about 6 weeks after the
Black Saturday bushfires devastated the whole region, driving through was

there was no grass, no fences, all the trees were burnt trunks, no foliage at all was
present. There were no animals grazing in the paddocks, no wildlife was visible and
no green anywhere. Fire is a natural part of life as my friend told me that day, trees
will grow again, fences can be mended, the animals and wildlife will return. People
are what matter, thankfully no one lost their lives in the region I travelled that day.

In this lecture, I would like to discuss whether time itself has a beginning, and
whether it will have an end. All the evidence seems to indicate, that the universe has
not existed forever, but that it had a beginning, about 15 billion years ago. This is
probably the most remarkable discovery of modern cosmology. Yet it is now taken
for granted. We are not yet certain whether the universe will have an end. When I
gave a lecture in Japan, I was asked not to mention the possible re collapse of the
universe, because it might affect the stock market. However, I can re assure anyone
who is nervous about their investments that it is a bit early to sell: even if the
universe does come to an end, it won t be for at least twenty billion years. By that

blue garments beneath a slightly tattered navy blue cloak with black inner lining,
billowing in the breeze. The lower half of his face was obscured by a black mask and

The figure treaded through the snow filled path until the sound of a snapping twig

heard about Charles Olson or the democracy thesis. My biggest exposure to jazz
music was listening to it on radio stations that I didn t typically listen to. Over the
course of the last eight weeks, my understanding of jazzmusichas been completely
revolutionized. I have incorporated this understanding into my portion of our jazz

Jazz, for me, is a musical, projective verse that idealizes American democracy by
poetically allowing individuals to improvise and produce music that speaks about
their life and their struggles. Jazz was a way for individuals in the early 1900 s to
escape the Victorian social norms previously established at the end of the 19th

character upon immigrating to the United States. The novel s style of narration
allows Lucy s thoughts and emotions to remain hidden. Despite this intense privacy,
Lucy s disillusionment is clear. She had hoped that moving around the globe would
solve her problems but she still struggles with homesickness and her relationship with
her mother. Her move is disappointing. The erasure poem And Coldest also engages
disillusionment. The poem suggests the speaker has become disillusioned by
observing the world, and indicates their plan to be shut tight. The poem inspired me
to consider the causes of Lucy s disillusionment, and her failure to address her own
emotions. As a recent immigrant, the causes of Lucy s disillusionment are somewhat
obvious. More enigmatic is her self avoidant, shut tight attitude. In this paper, I argue
that Lucy s disillusionment causes her to avoid the discomfort that comes with self
reflection.
Lucy s experience in the United States is dissatisfactory from the moment of her
arrival onwards. She describes her first night as gray black and cold and notes that no
one told her January would be cold (Kincaid 3 5). This comment marks the intensity
