Thomas Foster s Themes Traced in Mulan In his book How to Read Literature Like
a Professor, Thomas Foster explains many reoccurring themes in literature, and
shows how to recognize them and in some instances shows certain works where
they occur. By reading this guide to literature, one may gain a deeper understanding
of the work itself and of the author s intent in writing it. However, Foster s methods
can also be applied to films. A film that contains many of the various themes, models,
symbolism, and devices discussed in his book is Walt Disneys Mulan. Mulan is a

After Mulan has failed in her encounter with the matchmaker, she goes home and
begins singing the marvelous, gripping song called Reflection . She asks, When
will my reflection show who I am inside? She realizes that her fair appearance does
not reflect her feelings. Singing this song, she washes away her makeup, and
gives up on becoming the perfect daughter and bride; it is a baptism. Maybe it
would be key to mention that during this song, Mulan sings in a downpour of rain.
Just like Foster describes in his book, Mulan is baptized in the rain. Disney movies
are not notorious for their violent nature. So, when something violent occurs in a
Disney movie, or an individual (or animal in many cases) dies, it must carry some
kind of importance. In the chapter of his book More Than It s Gonna Hurt You ,
Fosters says that there is usually more to violence than just violence. When Mulan
is struck by the sword of Shan Yu, many more things happen to her than a fatal
wound. She almost meets her demise, and for the first time, the reality of war sets
in. Mulan realizes that she is not invincible and grasps the perils of war for the first
time. When she receives medical attention for her wound, she is discovered to be a
woman. All she has worked for up until this point is now for naught, as she is
expelled from the army and her family name is disgraced. Another instance where

Perseverance. Such a word embraces those who ve fallen victim to Sorrow s hold,
grips them so as to speak of the haven s they will find one day that will keep them
going. The message of perseverance is imagined and depicted in various forms of
art, two poems in particular being prime examples of literature works founded upon
optimistic and persistent determination. The two poems being: The Gift to Sing , by
James Weldon Johnson and Mother to Son , by Langston Hughes, both of which
share a range of similarities between their tones, evidenced by the various lines in

The figurative language, for example, is used in distinct ways by each poet. In The
Gift to Sing , the poet uses personification and metaphors when illustrating the
image that reality casts upon us in our darkest of times: And blackening clouds
about me cling/Shadowed by Sorrow s somber wing (Johnson 2,7). The turn in
weather and the use of shadows is meant to depict the impediments one faces in life.
Similarly, the poem Mother to Son uses metaphors when re counting the trials
experienced in their life time, but instead the poet chose to construct an original,
and much more elaborate comparison of life to a crystal staircase: Life for me ain t
been no crystal stair (Hughes 2). However, the differences are seldom over, for if one
possesses background knowledge on Langston Hughes, the poet behind Mother to
Son, one begins to now truly unravel the deeper meaning behind the contexts of the
poem. Langston Hughes was an African American male who lived through the Civil
Rights Movement. Knowing this, one can make an inference as to what he really
meant in the lines where he spoke of the deteriorated staircase. The
tacks...splinters...and boards torn up, are likely references to not only the everyday
hurdles one faces, but also hints towards the discrimination and injustice minorities

Two passages that symbolize and mean two different things can contradict each
other such as the two passages Charge of the Light Brigade , which is about
glorifying and noble deaths in a war, and also Dulce Et Decorum Est , one that is
not so noble and proud of deaths in a war. The two passages symbolize and mean
two different things. Let s take, for instance, Charge of the Light Brigade, the author
uses words in the passage that conveys meaning to being ready. In stanza one he
says, Forward, the Light Brigade! Chargefor the guns! He said: Into the valley of
Death . This signifies that they were marching into the valley of death which was the
battle field and they were ready because Lord Cardigan gave them the order to charge
their guns.

`` White Noise `` By Jack Gladney
Jack Gladney teaches death, destruction, and devastation, he surrounds himself by
the legacy of chaos perpetuated by Hitler. Death did not stop Hitler, he continued to
live on by securing his place in history. Jack struggles to secure his own place in
history, rather he attaches himself to the important figure. The ever present fear of
deathaffects Jack and his family are differently, causing them to find their own ways
of dealing with it. While some are encouraged to pursue outrageous feats, others
attempt to cure themselves of the fear, and some try to defeat death itself.
Throughout the novel, White Noise, Jack is forced to look past the distractions of
daily life and face the looming fear of death that plagues his thoughts, and he learns
how that fear prevails even in the modern world.
Despite death, many powerful and popular individuals continue to live on. One
individual, Hitler, used his persona to gain political power which spawned a myth,
that grew larger than life and larger than death. Jack learns, studies, and lives
through Hitler, through his appraisal of Hitler, Jack realizes the insignificance of his
own death. His attachment to Hitler helps Jack ward off the overwhelming fear and
anxiety about being forgotten after his own death. In a discussion about Hitler and
Elvis, Murray notes, Elvis fulfilled the terms of the contract. Excess, deterioration,
self destructiveness, grotesque behavior, a physical bloating and a series of insults to
the brain,
