5. An introduction to ESP
ESP is one of these specific courses.
To fulfill the needs of these new learners new specific courses were designed and
introduced.
In some cases people with inadequate proficiency in English need to be taught to handle
specific jobs.
Depending on their specific needs and requirements , new learners who knew specifically
why they need English are created.
English has become the internationally accepted language of almost all the fields of
knowledge.
6. An Introduction to ESP
Continued..
From early 1960’s ESP has emerged as one of the major areas of EFL teaching
today.
The word “SPECIAL” refers to the purpose for which learners learn language.
Various universities across the globe are offering a number of ESP courses
nowadays.
ESP has paid scant attention to the question of “how people learn” instead of
“what people learn”.
It has , in other words, been language – cent red in its approach.
7. The Origin of ESP
ESP was not a planned and
coherent movement, but rather a
phenomena that grew out of a
number of converging trends.
The demands of a
Brave New World
A revolution in
linguistics
Focus on the
learner
8. 1.The demands of a Brave New World
Expansion in science and technology
after world war 2
The constrains of time and money created a need for
cost- effective courses with clearly defended goals.
This was accelerated by the Oil Crisis of
the early 1970’s.
Now English had become the subject to the wishes,
needs and demands of people other than language.
9. 2.A revolution in linguistics
.Shifted the focus from grammar to communication
Realization of language
variation from context to
context.
A rise in the expansion of
research in English for
Science and technology
and English for Business.
10. 3.Focus on the learner
Focus on student cent red –
learning.
The standard way of achieving this
was to take texts from the learners’
specific area of study/ work.
The assumption is that the relevance of the
English course to their needs would improve
the learners’ motivation and make learning
better and faster.
11. Defining ESP
• ESP is an approach to language
teaching in which all decisions as
to content and method are based
on the learners need/reason for
learning.
16. DIFFERENCE Continued..
ESP EGP
It is a goal oriented. It is an aim oriented.
It focuses on general communicative
abilities.
It focuses on students’ proficiency.
Its courses are not pre- determined. It has pre-determined courses.
Its duration is shorter. Its duration is longer than ESP.
17. FINAL THOUGHT
(Conclusion)
English for
specific
purposes is as
an approach
not product.
It is based on
the learners’
needs, and his
expectations
behind
learning
language.
ESP has
emerged as a
significant
field in
Applied
linguistics.

distinguish
role in ESP.
The guiding
principle of
ESP , which is
“ tell me what
you need
English for ,
and I will tell
you the
English that
you need.”
