ALL ABOUT EPILEPSY.
EPILEPSYPRESENTED BY ASHUTOSH P JADHAV
Common people call this to be Fits,
But in medical terminology it is called as Epilepsy.
Common problem in the world.
Mainly Affects young people it may be male or female.
70% of people with epilepsy are young.
30% of people develops epilepsy after the age of 50-60
EPILEPSY
CHRONICALLY RECURRENT CEREBRAL CORTICAL SEIZURES
MYTHS ABOUT EPILEPSY
Epilepsy is not a new term for many people because they have seen others
in their surrounding suffering but at the same time but there are many
misconceptions prevalent in the society about this disease
Many people think that the fits are because of evil possession and they
then prefer seeing for bhondu babas.
Another Misconception is that epilepsy is a psychological problem people
think that it is because of stress or failures in life.
When a young boy/Girl have a seizure, suppose a 10year old otherwise a
normal looking boy/girl parents get genuinely concerned with the
misconceptions that are prevalent in society the first fear is that of evil
possesion or a serious psychological issue.
MYTHS ABOUT EPILEPSY
Seizure ?
NO
Epilepsy is a neurological illness or illness of the brain.
The communication or information exchange between
different parts of the brain occurs through ELECTRIC CURRETS
there are billions of wires that connect the billions of neurons
and make the fast and continuous communication possible if
at any point there is a short circuit at some point then
particular part of brain or the whole brain stops working
temporarily this phenomenon is called Epilepsy
EPILEPSY
WHAT IS EPILEPSY ?
Some of the patient may lose awareness during this time for 1-2 minutes
After the fit they regain their consciousness level in the same position
and start communicating normally.
Patient himself/herself is not aware of this 1-2 minute such event is
called as MINOR EPILEPTIC FIT
If the epileptic attack becomes severe then the patient may lose
consciousness and the whole body may start jerking vigorously it would
then called MAJOR EPILEPTIC FIT.
90% of the time both fits ends up in 1-2 minute of time.
EPILEPSY
EPILEPTIC FIT.
Frequency of epileptic attack may vary .
One patient may have fit every month,
Another may have once in 3 months,
Third person may have every week,
Some people may have infrequently once in 6 months,
While some people may have fit once in a Year.
Some may have Fits only at Night.
While others may have fits in early morning.
In most of the people may get epileptic fit suddenly,
While 25 - 30 % of patients may get feeling about an attack
is going to happen
This variation is because of different types of epilepsy
EPILEPSY
HOW & HOW OFTEN FITS OCCUR ?
Neurologists are experts in dealing with this disease
sometimes a test may done to make a diagnosis of
epilepsy which is called as EEG, electrodes are applied on
scalp which then record brains electrical activity an EEG
may show abnormality in brain waves and is then helpful
in diagnosing Epilepsy .
EPILEPSY
HOW & HOW OFTEN FITS OCCUR ?
EEG test is required (electroencephalogram (EEG)
Pay 2000 rs/- on the counter.
In 90% of patients epilepsy is completely treatable .
We know this is just a illness of a brain and how it
is treated, treatment is possible through anti-
epileptic drugs these medications are to be taken
for a long time periods regularly.
Therapy is almost 3 - 5 yrs or even maybe more in
some patients upto 10yrs or even longer.
EPILEPSY
IS EPILEPSY TREATABLE ?
YES IT IS TREATABLE.
Patient should not go on a heights during therapy,
Avoid driving,
Avoid Swimming,
Avoid Playing video games/ watching television for long time.
Take a good sleep
Take drugs on Time.
EPILEPSY
WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS FOR EPILEPTIC PATIENTS ?
TAKE MEDICATIONS REGULARLY
