Unit-I
Water
• Water: It is a transparent, tasteless, odorless and colourless chemical
substance.
• Chemical Formula is H2O
• Forms of Water: Precipitation in the form of rain.
• Snow fall
• Water vapours.
• Movement of water- Evaporation, transpiration (Evapotranspiration),
Condensation, precipitation and Runoff.
Sources of drinking water:
Sources
Surface
Sub-Surface
Surface: Ponds and lakes, streams and rivers, storage reservoirs and oceans
Subsurface: Springs, Infiltration well and tube wells.
Water Quality: The water quality is analyzed by testing it’s physical, chemical
and bacteriological characteristics.
• Physical Characteristics: Turbidity, Colour, Taste and Adour, Temperature.
• Chemical Characteristics: Acidity, Alkalinity, Hardness, Chlorides, Sulphates,
• Iron, Solids and Nitrates.
• Bacteriological Characteristics: Very important – indicates degree of pollution.
• Pathogenic organisms cause water borne diseases.
Water Pollution: Contamination of pure water which imparts objectionable
odour and taste to pure water.
• Causes:
• Human Activities: Washing of clothes, vehicles, disposal of waste water in to natural
streams, dumping of solid wastes into water bodies etc.
• Natural Cause: Rain fall .
• Effects:
• Disturbance in ecosystem: Ecosystem is very sensitive to pollution, small disturbance
causes complete destruction of the ecosystem.
• Diseases: Consumption of polluted water results in water borne diseases like Typhoid,
Cholera, hepatitis etc.
Water Treatment:
• Water treatment is necessary to remove the contaminants or reduce them.
• It includes-
• Collection
• Screening and straining
• Chemical addition
• Coagulation- Coagulant is added, increases the size of impurities, increase in
weight of the particles results in settlement of impurities.
• Sedimentation-Settlement of fine particles.
• Filtration- Removes the particulate matter.
• Disinfection-Kills the bacteria and viruses., Commonly chlorine is used.
• Storage.
