- How can we help children connect with where food comes from and how it is raised? Many schools now have gardens—in my daughters’ grade school back in the early 1990s, all the kids worked in the garden, planting and tending and harvesting and making scarecrows. Award-winning restauranteur and activist Alice Waters started the Chez Panisse foundation on the 25th anniversary of her famous restaurant. With help of her foundation and the principal of Martin Luther King Middle School she developed a program called “The Edible Schoolyard” in Berkeley, California in 1995. It includes both gardening and cooking in its curriculum. In 2000 the concept expanded to supplement cafeteria meals with the School Lunch Initiative. Schools across the US have adopted the ESY approach and curriculum. Could AR or VR or some mix of realities complement a school or community garden? Here is a scenario.

- next autumn harvest is winding down boy wanders over – “what do you do with dried-up corn?” young Pueblo woman appears nearby – “cornmeal – keeps” working with pestle in a hole in rock “you can see holes in rock from generations of grandmothers grinding corn” “you made your GRANDMOTHERS do all the grinding?” she is gone with a laugh
- kids planning future garden “let’s try a what-if” move crops around – tomatoes do better where beans were harvested at flowering fish heads floating around – girl shoos them away boy moves back to the drying corn “next year I’ll be in high school. Didn’t even get a pumpkin for Halloween. Children got them. [CLICK] voice comes from compost “ahem, come over here if you would be so kind” saunters over to compost mid-sized pumpkin has grown up from edge of pile in reality prime grabs it, sits down on dirt and laughs “Last laugh, compost” “Always,” compost replies [CLICK]
- This scenario is achievable, much of it with current or very near future technology: repurposing existing logistics, AI, speech recognition, agents, machine vision, databases of models and simulations, traverses in Google Earth. Challenges remain. make things with such intents and to allow those intents to inform new capability spaces.
- What does the delivery platform look like? Smartphones or pads? Glasses? VR rigs or something else? * How do we make graceful transitions from AR to model-and-simulation or VR? *How can people move elegantly from sharing screens to using their own exclusively? These are problems that can be solved; perhaps some have been solved already. *What is lacking is the will to make things with such intents and to allow those intents to inform new capability spaces.
- This is a picture my grandson, a wonderful boy. This picture was taken with a digital camera – along with all the tools that let me share him with you - technological augmentation that we’ve invented. When children work with plants or walk in the woods, they can form a bond of love with Nature that will not be broken as they grow older. Technology may be designed to enhance that learning and love.
