English Language History can be traced back to prehistoric times when primitive Old English developed from ancestral Indo-European languages. Old English emerged as the language spoken by Germanic tribes like the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who invaded Britain and displaced the native Celtic language in many areas. Middle English then developed as Old English was influenced by the Scandinavian invasions in the 9th-11th centuries and the Norman conquest of 1066 which introduced more French vocabulary and grammar.
