Jesus knew that he would soon be crucified and expresses his sorrow to God, saying "if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me." While it did not make sense for an innocent person to die for the sins of others, it was God's will for Jesus to sacrifice himself to save humanity. According to God's justice, humans deserve death for their sins, but Jesus took our place, so that through his blood we can be made innocent. When Jesus spoke of "this cup," he referred to God's wrath that he would endure on the cross to accomplish our salvation through his sacrifice, demonstrating God's great love for humanity.
