Assignment On The Kite Runner
Rationale
Khaled Hosseini is the author of the book Kite Runner which was published on 29th
May 2003. The book Kite Runner revolves around the life of Amir, a young boy
from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul and his closest friend, Hassan. The story
is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan s
monarchy through the Soviet military intervention, the exodus of refugees to
Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.
My Written Assignment will be a Diary entry. I think that choosing such type of text
will help me to view a situation from different perspective or one s perspective. My

My Father, Ali and I live at the bottom of Amir and Baba s garden. We are his
servants, but are more like brothers. By the time Amir is out of bed, I ve washed
up, prayed and made breakfast. I then do all the housework and get Amir ready for
school. I ve grown up with Amir. I always defend Amir when neighbours try to
threaten him. Amir believes me a lot. My loyalty is unbendable. I am a Shi a
Muslim. My mother ran off with a clan of travelling singers and dancers. I never
knew her. And it seems she never wanted to know me.
In the winter of that year, 1975, the tournament is held in Amir s neighbourhood.
Usually each neighbourhood has its own competition, but the nearby districts will
compete together this time. A few days before the tournament, Amir s father casually
told Amir that he may win the tournament. An overwhelming desire to win seizes
Amir as Amir thinks this will earn him Baba s approval. The day of the competition
comes. The tournament lasts all day, and Amir is doing well. Amir can see Baba
sitting on a rooftop, watching. Eventually all that remain are Amir s kite and one
other, a blue kite. We have fought and Amir won the tournament, sending the blue
kite flying loose. Amir and me cheer and hug, but Amir sees Baba motioning for them

European Colonialism Effect On The Economy Of Brazil
Economy of Brazil
Defining Economy
I am researching the economy of Brazil. The definition of economy: The
Management of the income, expenditures, etc of a household, business, community,
or government. Careful management of wealth, resources, etc; avoidance of waste by
careful planning use; thrift or thrifty use. (1) The system or range of economic
activity in a country, region, or community. (2)
Characteristics of Brazil
The country of Brazil official name is Federative Republic of Brazil, the term for
citizens is Brazilian, and its capital is Brasilia. Brazil gained its independence for
Portugal September 7, 1822. Brazil shares boundaries with all South American

These were not tribes but language families that comprised many language groups.
Numerous tribes also spoke languages unrelated to any of the above. These tribes are
believed to have lived off the land as hunters and gathers. (4)
European Colonialism Effect on the Economy
European colonialism changed the economy in Brazil drastically. The country went
basically from hunters and gatherers to a major source of goods for exports do
largely to the Portuguese. Portugal explored Brazil because of the European
commercial expansion of the fifteen and sixteenth centuries. Portugal began in the
fifteenth century to search for other routes to the sources of goods valued in
European markets. At first the Portuguese did not find mineral riches in their
American colony, but did not lose hope. The Portuguese had to defend the Brazil
from European intruders, they did this by establishing a pioneer colonial enterprise.
They began to produce sugar, and then in 1531 cattle began to arrive in Brazil, and
developed quickly as an industry. The cattle developed to the needs of the sugar
industry for transportation and food for the workers. (5)
By the mid sixteenth century, Portugal had succeeded in establishing a sugar
economy in parts of the colony s northeastern coast. Sugar production, the first large
scale colonial agricultural enterprise, was made possible by a series of favorable
conditions. Portugal had the agricultural and manufacturing know how from its
Dragon Ball Z s Influence On African American Culture
In the west, Japan is a country known for bustling cities, bullet trains, a rich history
of samurai, and wacky popular culture. Two facets of Japanese popular media that
have exploded onto a global scale are manga and anime. The western world considers
manga Japanese comic books and graphic novels considered collectively as a genre 1.
In Japan however, mangarefers to any sort of comic style work, whether produced in
Japan by Japanese people or otherwise. The term anime(an abbreviation for
animation), as defined in the west, indicates a style of animation originating in Japan
that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action
filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes 2. In Japan, anime refers to any

Japan based Fashion brand Bathing Ape (Bape), a brand known for producing
high quality streetwear and hip hop fashion clothing, has produced collaborations
with Dragon Ball Z in the past. The clothing includes hoodies as well as t shirts that

relates to African American culture, many black hip hop artists and celebrities
have been seen wearing Bape and so in this regard Dragon Ball Z has influenced
hip hop fashion 13. Other examples of Dragon Ball Z s influence can be seen
through shirts such as the one shown in figure 1. The shirt features Frieza from
Dragon Ball Z wearing a gold chain, an accessory often associated with hip hop, and

Abstract
The intent of this paper is to describe three natural disasters; for this paper we will
describe a hurricane, an earthquake and a mudslide. We will briefly discuss how, or
if, our ancestors were able to predict and therefore mitigate loss of life or damage
to infrastructure for these types of disasters 100 years ago. Then we will look at
how our modern society is able to accomplish this in current times. Finally, we will
cover how we could better predict future events and plan accordingly. We will explore

When a storm first begins to form over the ocean, meteorologists are now able to
provide early warning on weather systems that could develop into tropical
depressions with the potential to become a tropical storm or stronger. These
meteorologists are better able to predict storm track and severity in order to allow
county or state officials to make informed decisions. Following along the same idea,
as it pertains to meteorologists and their ability to monitor weather activity, comes
their increased ability to track non tropical

How Did Islam Influence Trans Saharan Trade
Following the advent of the current era, West Africa with the Western Sudan empires
of Ghana, Songhai, and Mali was the center of outside contact and influence with the
spread of Islam and being a center of the Trans Saharan trade. Being a part of the
Trans Saharan trade gave West Africans a connection with those outside the continent,
namely in Europe and Southeast Asia. It also gave the opportunity for things other
than goods to be exchanged like Islam. Africans adopted and shaped Islam into their
own religion that others besides them also learned and accepted. The camel arrived in
Western Africaafter the first century of the current era. In a desert environ, nothing
could top the camel as the most fundamental unit of caravan transport.... Show more

The effects of the Trans Saharan trade are evident through looking at the currencies
used in Western Africa. Igbo Ukwu, in modern day Nigeria, shows that by the ninth
century West Africawas not isolated from the outside world, as for some its trading
goods included over one hundred thousand glass beads, mostly from Egypt and India.
The Almoravids also exported gold coins to infiltrate Europe s economy by
accompanying its silver currency. During the height of Western African empires,
Africans had a lot of interaction with people outside the continent that they were both
influenced by and affected themselves.
East Africa after the sixteenth century had grown to be an international center where
many outsiders would come to trade. By the 1500s, East Africa was starting to
become a thriving trading center, with several Europeans and Southeast Asians
coming to stay for several months due to the strong monsoon trade winds. They were
not just intermediaries in trade but consolidators and producers, with Kilwa playing
the middleman. Portuguese seeing this success, attempted to establish an East
African empire there but failed due to several conditions the main being how strong
the Africans were against

3. Banned the recruitment of Thai workers
Cut off the Thai employees, and not allowed their people to visit Thailand.
Saudi Arabia refused to allow Thai labourers to seek employment in the oil rich
country and prohibited its citizens from visiting the Asian kingdom. (Trend News

Over 200,000 Thai nationals were working in Saudi in 1989, and millions of dollars
a year were being sent home in remittances. (Ramsey, 2015).
Thai workers dropped from 200,000 in 1989 to merely 10,000 in 2011. (Meghan A.

Conclusion
Thailand have attempted to improve its diplomat relations with Saudi Arabia, but
their attempts have failed because of the failures to solve the murder cases and seek
for the precious Blue Diamond. Saudi Arabia wait too long to find the justice in
Thailand, but never get it. So, Who should protect the country now? the polices who

The Immigration Problem Of Immigration
Since the 1970 s, the distinction between criminal law and immigration law has
become increasingly blurred. In many jurisdictions around the world, undocumented
immigration was long considered a civil offence in which violation resulted in fines
and deportation. Now, however, illegal crossings are often treated as criminal
violations carrying overly punitive consequences such as incarceration in harsh
detention centers. The ever evolving assortment of laws and enforcement measures
concerning immigration, as well as negative rhetoric in politics and media, has
resulted in migrants being ascribed the stigma of criminal , alien or terrorist . This
paper will explore the criminalization of immigration phenomenon broadly by
detailing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, our social reality is influenced by the state constructed definition of
what is crime which often reflects the values of the upper class (Persak, 2016). For
example, the trend seen in many cities in the United States of criminalizing
homelessness through so called get tough policies reflects the upper classes desire
for public health and safety, protection of economic interests in business districts
and the maintenance of city aesthetic. Although, these policies do not address the
causes of homelessness rather they exacerbate the problem and violate the liberties
and human rights of citizens (Foscarinis, Cunningham Bowers Brown, 1999).
Criminalization is perhaps the most repressive and intrusive applications of state
power on a citizen and is often implemented, as is the case with the homeless, to
target the less desirable social groups (Persak, 2016). Moreover, while formal
criminalization in the form of legislation and criminal consequences for
infringement works as a social control, it is not the only form of criminalization that
occurs. Informal criminalization may in some cases be a more effective form of
social control and ultimately lead to formal criminalization of behavior or come as a
result of formal legislation. As stated by Hauptman (2013), informal social control
measures are any social influences on compliance not
Analysis Of The Blackbird Call In Grief
Death is a spiritual experience that is flush with taboo connotations. When a loved
one leaves this life for the after there are tears and grieving. This occurrence has been
used countless times throughout history to commemorate the passing of a loved one,
this makes it difficult to produce a piece of poetrythat discussed death in a way it
has not been discussed before. In The New Oxford Book of Irish Verse poem 67
which will be referred to as The blackbird calls in grief , poem 108 which will be
referred to as There are three ways to await death , and All That is Left...by Michael
Hartnett discuss this taboo topic in new and interesting ways. These poems are
distinct because of the way that the author represents death. These poems are related
and similar while being vastly different.
The blackbird calls in grief is an anonymously written poem from the twelfth
century. The narrator of the poem laments the story of the death of loved ones. In
the poem, the narrator laments to a blackbird and mourns the passing of both their
families. The bird is personified by the narrator. In this poem, the death is of two
families, the birds, and the mans. The harm now happened to him/ not long since
happened to me (Kinsella 85). An analogy is created equating the loss of the two
families and the injustice of the loss. The seventh stanza questions God, O You who
made the world, / Your bias is hard to bear:/ friends all around me are spared, / their

Frantz Fanon In The Wretched Of The Earth
Influence on social theory from movements of decolonisation that challenged colonial
rule against the third world. One of the key thinkers of these movements was the
Martinique born intellectual and revolutionary Frantz Fanon. Frantz Fanon (1926
1961) is widely considered one of the most important theorists of the twentieth century
on race, racism, and colonialism. Fanon supported the Algerian war of independence
from French colonialism as he worked in Algeria as a psychiatrist during the war, and
he was a member of the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN). This essay will
attempt to critically discuss Fanon s account of the development of the colonised
intellectual s consciousness and the relationship to the struggle for national liberation,

When it comes to the colonial situation, the Marxian analysis must be slightly
stretched to deal with these realities (Fanon, The Wretched of The Earth, 1963).
When he states this he is not saying that the Marxian analysis should be abandoned,
revised or ignored. He was trying to deal with realities that the Marxist tradition
often overlooked, such as the role the peasantry that is more than simply an
auxiliary to the working class, a critique of the national bourgeoisie and its
relationship to the proletariat and his rejection of a two staged theory of
revolution. On these issues, Fanon may be said to be more in tune with Marx than
many of Marx s followers. After Marx published volume one of his greatest
theoretical work, he denied that he had ever developed a universal theory that is
applicable to every society on earth. He also specifically limited his delineation of
the historical tendency of capitalist accumulation to Western Europe alone and in his
white writings on Russia and elsewhere, he emphasised the possibility that these non
Western underdeveloped societies could get to socialism without having to go
through capitalist industrialisation. When you look at Marx s work you find that he
is not simply adopting a formula that he extracts from his earlier work in studying
Europe, and then simply tries to put it on to the rest of the developing world

A Field Of Forces Within The Field
As Bourdieu pointed out, no cultural product exists by itself, i.e., outside the relations
of interdependence which link it to other products (Bourdieu, 1993: p. 32). These
goods are also produced under specific conditions, not in a vacuum. This assumption
is valid to art, literature, but also to journalismas a massive cultural production, like
Bourdieu and other authors had demonstrated (Benson Neveu, 2005; Benson, 2006;
Bourdieu, 1994; English, 2015; MarliГЁre, 1998; Murrell, 2015; Schultz, 2007).
Thus, cultural products are entangled in a net knitted by different players, with
diverse even opposite interests, forces, and strategies struggling to dominate what
Bourdieu had called the field.
Bourdieu defines it as a field of forces within which the agents occupy positions that
statistically determine the positions they take with respect to the field, these
positions taking being aimed either at conserving or transforming the structure of
relations of forces that is constitutive of the field... it is the site of actions and
reactions performed by social agents endowed with permanent dispositions, partly
acquired in their experience of these social fields (Bourdieu, 2005: 30). So, the field
is the space in which the actors, both individual and collective, deploy their forces,
struggling to reform/preserve the rules of the game.
The concept of field allows inquiring the complex interplays between larger social and
political structures and the schemes of human
Why Do Best Choices In The Giver Essay
Those who know more about concepts in life, will make better choices. If
someone has knowledge about something, they most likely will make wiser
decisions about it. The more intelligence someone has, the more good and bad they
will see in the world. People who gain wisdom, may see the best things in life,
causing them to make the best choices as well. In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, those
who have more wisdomwill see both negative and positive aspects in life and will
make wiser decisions for themselves and others.
When someone gains wisdom, the choices they make can have an affect on what
lies ahead. That someone is known as The Giver, from the book, The Giver, by Lois
Lowry. When The Giver was the Receiver of Memory, he gained great wisdom from
experiencing important events in the past, causing his knowledge to expand
immensely. The choices that The Giver made for the community were substantial,

Jonas, the protagonist, asked The Giver why they have to contain all the memories
of past events. The Giver explains that the memories give them wisdom which
helps them in their lives. When the people who run the community, The

they need. A quote that portrays this is, Why do you and I have to hold these
memories? It gives us wisdom, The Giver replied, Without wisdom I could not
fulfill my function of advising the Committee of Elders when they call upon me.
(Lowry, pg. 140) People who achieve wisdom are looked up to in the world.
Normal individuals sometimes depend on that person when they need help on
something. It is usually when the person with wisdom assists the other with
making a certain decision. They can often see if the outcome is going to be good
or bad. This is one more example of how those who have wisdom are looked up to,
and relied upon to settle on the best

Machiavelli and the Use of Antiquity in The Prince and The Discourses
The Renaissance was a time of classical revival and a turning point from the Middle
Ages to the Early Modern period in the course of history. Ancient texts and artifacts
became sources of inspiration for intellectuals and artists alike, and the desire to
emulate or even surpass the achievements of the past prompted them to study
antiquities closely and saw them as models and guidance. People were consciously
distinguishing themselves from the medieval thoughts and using history to make
something new for their own era. In the field of political philosophy there s no
exception. Niccolo Machiavelli is perhaps the most representative and
groundbreaking figure of this trend in political philosophy. With his erudition in
ancient literature, histories and political thoughts, Machiavelli draws various sources
from antiquity to critic and response to the political environment of histime. While
one may find seemingly discrepancies in The Prince and The Discourse on the First
Ten Books of Tius Livy, the use of histories as guide to demonstrate or propose ideal
rules is apparent in both works. We should note that synthesizing ancient philosophy
or thoughts with contemporary thoughts is nothing new. Thomas Aquinas, for
example, reconciled Aristotelianism and Christianity in his work Summa Theologica,
using ancient antiquity to back up his Christian beliefs. What is so noteworthy in
Machiavelli is his emphasis and
Endogenous Opioids And The Placebo Effect
Endogenous opioids are largely involved with the placebo effect, in which a patient
expects an improvement in their clinical status, and can result in the reduction of
pain without any real treatment. One of the main ideas behind this phenomenon is
the concept of expectation, which is a top down regulation of pain. An increase in
endogenous opioids can act upon the ON/OFF cells in the RVM, which can in effect
turn off the pain signal, or dampen it dramatically, hence the use of opioids as pain
killers. Proving the presence of opioids within the placebomechanism was determined
by using an opioid antagonist naloxone3, which was able to reduce the placebo effect
if there were strong expectation cues, but not as effectively when the expectation

Technology In Bram Stoker s Dracula
While thought of as an improvement to human society, science also makes humans
more close minded. In Bram Stoker s Dracula, technology plays an important role in
the Victorian society. For example, there are trains, phonographs, typewriters, and
telegraphs. Trains are the main use of travel and telegraphs allow the characters to
send each other short messages. In fact, the story itself has diary entries made by
Mina s typewriter or Dr. Seward s phonograph that records his voice in wax cylinders.
Also, the new medical concept of blood transfusions play an important aspect in the
story. With these advancement of technology, the Victorian mindset leans more
towards science and logic. This conflicts with Dracula, who symbolizes the

To defeat and ward off vampires, religious items such as the Host and crucifix are
shown as the main weaponry. Not only does the crucifix that the hotel landlady
gave to Jonathan protects him during his stay in Dracula s castle, the Host and

items when the men first go to scout Dracula s house in Whitby near the asylum.
Along with these religious items, the men also use knives and wooden stakes to
defeat the vampires. A wooden stake to the heart and the dismemberment of the
head proves to be the only way to kill a vampire. For example, Vampire Lucy dies
only through this method, no matter how vile and difficult the act can be. As he
watches, Dr. Seward states, Arthur placed the point over the heart, and as I looked I
could see its dint in the white flesh. Then he struck with all his might (Stoker 231).
The wooden stake through the heart kills vampire Lucy and purifies her, although
blood foaming from the mouth and vicious spasms accompanies it. Along with the
dismemberment of her head, these methods of killing are barbaric and primitive.
However, this method of killing also extends to Dracula

Introduction: If there is a high amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, and an
antacid is consumed, the antacid will absorb excess acid in the stomach. This
reduction of hydrochloric acid is absorbed by antacids that neutralize stomach acid
(Vodopich). The purpose of this experiment is to determine how commercial antacids
perform in absorbing acids. The hypothesis is that the antacid in Tums will reduce the
amount of hydrochloric acid inside the stomach.
Methods: For this experiment, the independent variable is the commercial antacid

counted orally from generation to generation and they were developed writing system

archeology has been an important to know the world last tool. These stories are
mostly mythological considered by historians but marked personal life, politics, and
economics in society. The location of the origin of these stories was throughout the

Egypt were created the story of Ra and the serpent, Memphis, the story of Anubis

Gilgamesh around 2100 BCE and 700 BCE less ancient Memphis. Each has a

St. Peterville City Case Study
1.The meeting I attended was the city of St. Augustine s special meeting to
establish the city s fiscal budget and millage rate for the upcoming year. It took
place on September 22nd, at 5:05pm. The city of St. Augustine holds its city
commission meetings every second and fourth Monday of the month in the
Alcazar Room at City Hall, which is located at 75 King Street, St. Augustine,
Florida. The meeting s purpose was to establish the millage rate for the city and how
allocate those funds into budget for next year. The new millage rate of 7.500 mills
was approved for the fiscal year of 2016 2017, which is an increase of 5.47% from
last year. Additionally, a new budget for the upcoming year was also approved.
2.All of the city commissioners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first concept illustrated by this meeting was the concept of effective
management and planning covered in module 6. By the accounts of residents, it is
clear that the city has not been effective in previous years, in planning the
restoration and preservation of local roads. The city has not been proactive in
planning which streets should be repaired, when, or to what those repairs should
be. A common complaint of residents was that the city appeared to be content on
postponing repairs when it would be more convenient and cost effective to handle
the situation as soon as possible. I believe St. Augustine should practice a more
adaptive style of management and respond to changing conditions. From listening
to the meeting, it seems that the city originally underestimated the problems
plaguing their roads and decided that certain areas could stand to wait for repairs.
From the accounts of citizens, it is clear that philosophy is not going to stand
anymore. In my opinion, I think the city needs to be more proactive and handle the
deteriorating condition of their roads a lot sooner than later, and at the very least
re evaluate old plans. The second concept demonstrated was collective action.
Collective action is defined as a coordinated effort of several individuals or groups,
who cooperate to accomplish specific goals. What was originally just a basic
meeting to approve a budget quickly turned into a discussion on a major public issue
due to the words of several speakers.
In Praise Of Not Knowing By Tim Kreker Summary
Are you at an age where you can remember a time before the internet, where you
would have to search through stacks of books or encyclopedias to find the
information that you want? Some of you may be thinking Yes, thank god for google!
and others may be thinking Oh, the horror! I can t imagine surviving without it! . But
there are the few that reminisce about the time when you couldn t find whatever
information you were looking for in a matter of minutes. Unlike many, Tim Kreider
looks back on the times before the internetwith fondness, and thinks that our easy
access to information has had some negative side effects. While Kreider raises some
interesting and valid points in his article, In Praise of Not Knowing there are still

Once one question is finally answered it can raise more like you often see in
mystery novels. If someone got bored of something just because they learned the
explanation for it then that shows they were never really interested to begin with. If
someone is truly interested in a topic looking it up could not only answer some of
their questions it could make them like it even more and improve their interest in it.
In addition if someone is curious about something but wants to keep that curiosity to
maintain that. Just because everyone has access to the internet doesn t mean
everyone uses it.
The other issue with Kreider s argument is that it seems to promote ignorance. We ve
been taught that knowledge is power and the internet is all the knowledge people
have accumulated over the years. The fact that we have access to gives us the
ability to become better and smarter and improve ourselves. We can find many
helpful and important tips that could help you with life and other things you might
experience. If you re also unsure about something you were sharing with someone
you could confirm if you were actually correct or not and not just guess. If we didn t
have the internet and weren t able to access information everyone would be relying
on conjecture instead of actual facts. When people are interested in an event, time, or
person and talk about it with others, others might disagree on what actually happened
you can easily figure out what is true and what is not.

Ocean Tide Research Papers
Amari Williams
Research Paper RD Beginning with its creation, Earth has been in contact with many
natural, environmental disasters. Majorities of the chaos still have effects on people
living in coastal areas. Because of the Earth s large capacity of water and relationship
with gravity, tidal waves through extreme tidal storms are created. The Moon heavily
influences the movement of Earth s tides by shifting and relating land features,
using its gravitational pull to change the height of the tides, and also affecting the
speed of the Moon s revolution. To start, the Earth s aquatic tides are the constant rise
and fall of bodies of water every day (Jacobs 9). Gravity, provided by the Moon and
some parts of the Sun, helps create the ocean s tides (Jacobs 10). It is also often
caused by the winds forcefully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Land tides are pieces of ground or land that are slowly shifted up and down twice
by the gravitational force between the Sun and Moon ( The ). Because of important
use of mainly sunlight, land tides occur most near the Equator and not often in the
poles. These tides happen in four cycles: the lunar diurnal, lunar semidiurnal, solar
diurnal, and solar semidiurnal ( Tides ). Diurnal tides last 24 hours while semidiurnal
tides only last 12 hours. During a land tide, the center of the Earth to the outer crust
takes time to deform under the Moon and Sun ( The ). The deformation takes toll on
geological processes and volcanic eruptions ( Tides ). To include, scientists found that
volcanic eruptions and tides have a relationship because of the magma flowing in
volcanoes. Geologists use specific instruments like: seismometers, tiltmeters, and
strainmeters to measure slow shifts. Results from these tools are placed on a graph
to view the various movements of Earth. In 1978, Spahr Webb, former M.I.T student,
measured with two thirty six feet tiltmeters and found a tidal tilt in Earth s surface

My Mind Entered A State Of Grief
As I laid there, staring into the blinding white light illuminated by the shattered
windows, tranquil winds began whispering into my frail ears. With all my
strength, I thrust myself up from the comfort of my bed and carefully shifted my
legs towards the dilapidated door. I slowly gaze through the millions of derelict
hospital beds, however, life is nowhere to be found... Sentiments of abandonment
raced through my conscience as every muscle in my body began contracting. My
mind entered a state of anguish as my body began taking control. I pounced myself
towards the slippery, icy slabs of marble with great alacrity as I lunged towards the
wooden door. Without hesitation, I grasp the asperities of the wooden handle and
shove the door open. However, I only unlocked the gates to hell... Syringes congested
with concoctions of blood scattered lifelessly on the rugged floors as vines began
forming a twisted maze on the walls, engulfing the room with their life absorbing
tentacles. A pungent, dank odour crept into my sinuses as the abhorrent chemicals
trickled down my desiccated tastebuds, inducing a nauseating pain in my stomach.
Anxiety consumed me as I dashed through the eerie hallway, seeking the serene
sunlight emitted from the door. After what seemed like an eternity, I finally escaped
the diabolical, dilapidated abyss. However, what I perceive is inconceivable...
As I stood there, bewildered, a blast of deafening silence crashed into my eardrums.

Forensic Accounting
A study conducted by two professors from Rider College interviewed over 150
lawyers, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and accounting educators. The study
identified sixteen skills needed by forensic accountants. According to the study, the
five most important skills are analytical skills, basic accounting skills, problem
solving skills, data analysis skills and interviewing skills (McMullen Sanchez, 2010).
Forensic accountants need analytical skills because as they review financial reports
and other source documents, they need to analyze the validity of each transaction and
determine if the company recorded the transaction fairly. The forensic accountant
needs the ability to analyze where the data came from and whether the data accurately
reflects the numbers posted in the financial reports (McIntosh, n.d.). With an in house
forensic accountant, this will ensure the company s financial state is accurately
reflected while an independent forensic accountant can verify the accuracy of the
reports, both of which help investors determine if the company is worth investing in.
Accounting is widely regarded as the language of business (McMullen and Sanchez,
2010, pg.1). As such, the need for basic accounting skills is self evident, for a forensic
accountant to be able to review financial reports and other source documents he needs
to have an understanding of basic accounting. Without that understanding, the
forensic accountant couldn t determine if the entries in the

Analysis Of Homer s The Iliad
Throughout history, men have been traditionally viewed as superior since the
beginning of time. Although, throughout this time, women have held many different
roles in society. In the Iliad, Homer portrayed the role of women in his time as
having a very suppressive role. Women during this period of time and especially in
this culture are treated primarily as merely property and were used for producing
material within the household. Women were often taken and given as if they were
material belongings, due to their lack of choice and their unfortunate circumstances.
However, apart from portraying women as pieces of property, Homer depicts in his
Iliadthat women are sometimes conceived and introduced as suppliants to their
masculine heroines. Homer depicts them as being inferior beings to men both
intellectually and physically. Throughout Homer s masterpiece Iliad, women play an
important but very modest role that entails their relative significance and the impact
they partially have on some of the affairs that take place.
The Iliad began with an argument, which is for lack of better terms, a fight over a
girl, between Achilles and Agamemnon over Briseis, who was considered to them a
war prize. During that time one of the biggest advantages of the Greek army raiding
a Trojan allied town was that were able to loot from the town afterwards. They
brought back the spoils of the town and whatever they desired and divided them
equally amongst the warriors. Agamemnon s price was

because people have similar professional and educational background the decision

advantage of this structure is that it reduces cost by reducing duplication and use of

English Piracy Trial
Alfred Rubin, the prominent historian on English piracy law believes there may be
some precedent for such a view. While acknowledging that the crown required special
commissions to sail again pirates beginning in the sixteenth century, he contends that
some jurists followed natural law. This approach meant that no such license was
necessary to hang a pirate when delivering them to authorities was impractical.
However, little evidence exists that this kind of frontier justice was anything beyond

Parliament passed The Treason Trials Act of 1696 in response to a series of treason
cases brought against political opponents of the monarchs during the later Stuart
dynasty in the 1670s and 1680s. This landmark legislation, which English policy
officials spent over a decade negotiating, was a reaction to what contemporaries
considered blatant judicial murder and gross crown intrusion into judicial
proceedings. Judges, handpicked by the crown and dependent on royal favor for
personal and professional status, fashioned a courtroom environment similar to piracy
trials of the subsequent decades. With no jury of their peers, unrepresented defendants
had little practical defense in the hostile environment that pre determined their guilt.
The Treason Act was an attempt to try and correct the obvious deficiency in the court
proceedings by chipping away at the prosecutions clear advantage. Specifically,
defense witnesses were made compulsory, a power previously limited to the
prosecution, and the court now accepted their testimony under oath. It provided the
accused with an advanced copy of the indictment, and limited the evidence to charges
listed therein. Most importantly, it guaranteed defendants the right to counsel during
both the pre trial, and the trial itself for the first time. The drafters of the bill saw that
treason trials presented distinctive problems that required special procedures, The
seemingly unique features of treason prosecutions, previously emphasized the
prosecutorial imbalance, the subservience of the bench, the complexity of the offense
of treason appeared to contemporaries to demarcate the treason trial as a procedural
world of its own, remote from ordinary crime. I contend these features were not
unique to treason, but shared with

entire private network, but depending on cost and necessities it is also good to

the little man with his ball still sold out within hours, often within minutes. So why
do people still shell out money for these pricey tennis shoes? The answer can be
found in the argument for the Jordan brand, greatness. If people see others who are

Economic Shocks
In the early 1970s, the prices of oil increased shockingly causing economic shocks,
which made organizations to impose changes. Economic shocks have continued to
impose changes on organizations. For example, economic problems in Russia,
Asia, and Latin America have rocked world stock markets and forced banks such as
chase Manhattan to take heavy losses. Similarly, when oil prices dropped from $22
a barrel to $13 in the late 1990s, many oil services went bankrupt.
Competition
Global economy leads to heightened competition from competitors all over, this
means that established organizations need to defend themselves against
entrepreneurial firms with innovative offerings.
Some successful organizations, which are fast on their feet, capable of developing
new product cycles, and an ongoing stream of new products, are flexible and require
a responsive workforce that can adapt to rapidly and even radically changing
conditions.
Social Trends
During the past generation, there were no changes, which organizations have to
adjust. But now, there is a clear trend in marriage and divorce during the past two
decades. Other than that, youngsters are delaying this social trend by marrying later.
This causes an increasing number of single households, demanding for housing by
singles. The house building business takes this is an important factor in determining
the size and design of
Essay on Garbage
On May 16, 1988, the Supreme Court ruled that police officers, without a warrant,
have the right to inspect curbside rubbish for evidence. Justice Byron R. White s
opinion for the majority said the privacy of garbage bags left outside the home and
its immediate surroundings is not protected by the Fourth Amendment because
people have no subjective expectation of privacy in their garbage that society accepts
as objectively reasonable (Taylor 559 560). The Supreme Courts rulingon curbside
rubbish is fair because people voluntarily leave their trash at the curb for collection.

However, this same trash can also provide the only clue police can find to bust a
criminal. Safety should be more important than a little privacy.
As long as police officers are not using items like bank statements or credit card
applications for their personal advantage, there really is no reason for anyone to be
worried about the trash searches. There should be no reason a person should feel
this ruling has violated their rights unless he or she has something to hide. Teltec s
Grant advised that those who wish to keep their secrets should use paper shredders
and then soak what s been shredded (557). Your trash speaks the truth about your life.
It [garbage] is the single most useful tool to obtain information regarding the private
lives of individuals, said Armand Grant, president of the Teltec Investigations (555).
People may be worried about items in their trash that do not belong to them. Police
may find evidence in a homeowner s trash that could be from a houseguest or
anyone else who may have been in their home. Evidence found in the trash should
give probable cause for a warrant; however, it isn t fair for the police officer to
suspect a homeowner of a crime just because evidence was found in their trash.
Trash may be personal, but it isn t exactly private. The specific item found in the
trash could belong to anyone who was in or around that home at any given time. Just
because there is a garbage can behind a
Paragraph On Holiness Of God
Holiness
The word holy, holy, holy, shows up twice in the Old Testament Isaiah 6:3 and once
in the New Testament Revelation 4: 8. These phrase in both time is spoken about a
heavenly creatures and both times it shows up in a vision of a man was transported
to God s throne. Firstly by prophet Isaiah and secondly by apostle John. (The Bible
says that God is holy, holy , holy. Not that He is merely holy or even holy, holy. Page
40, The Holiness Of God)
The holiness of God is very difficult attribute of God to explain. This important
quality is not shared inborn by man. God created us in His image we can share
from his qualities to a much lesser extent like His faithfulness, love and mercy, etc.
Some of His qualities such as omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience cannot be

relationship with God. We can only become righteous through God. Holiness is
the fundamental measure in God s life and letting his life flow through us. In other
for us to get the glorious divine calling in Christ, God s people are slowly prepared
along the way. This pattern is often occurring in our lives this is a need for us to
separate from our sins and turn towards the way of God.
Isaiah experienced the holiness of God in his vision in Isaiah 6. Isaiah was righteous
man and a prophet of God, his response to the holiness of God was to be ware his
despair of life and his sinfulness
Disadvantages Of Mergers
Mergers and Acquisitions: A merger is said to occur when at least two organizations
consent to consolidate, bringing about another element or with the subsequent firm
keeping up the character of the gaining organization. Most economies forestall
mergers between straightforwardly contending firms. The method of reasoning is to
counteract monopolistic economic situations where the buyer does not have any
decision aside from only one merchant. Affirmations of monopolistic conduct have
tormented Microsoft s operations in Europe. A merger may take either of the two
forms, absorption or consolidation. The mix of at least two organizations into a
current organization, where every one of the organizations aside from one lose their
character is named as a merger through absorption The mix of at least two

The Curriculum Policy Statement Of The Council On Social
Work
Problem Statement, Background, and Research Interest The Curriculum Policy
Statement of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2001), the accrediting
body of all bachelor s and master s social work degree programs in the United
States, requires all social work programs to teach students how to promote economic
and social justice. The revised Code of Ethics (1996) of the National Association of
Social Workers proclaims the pursuit of social justice one of the profession s core
values and establishes as an ethical imperative, Social workers challenge social
injustice (NASW, 1996, p. 5). At first glance, these statements give the appearance
of a trade which has retained its professional identity regardless of the opposition
demonstrated by the current trends in social, political, and economic policy;
however, upon closer inspection these phrases seem archaic, even patronizing as
they assume that social workers work for rather than with people. Then what do
these statements really signify? For nearly four decades, pundits have consistently
proclaimed the bankruptcy of socialist ideas, the fascist evils lurking in communism,
the triumph of the free market and liberal democracy... the so called end of history
(Fukuyama, 1992). Proposals to privatize Social Security, the cornerstone of what s
left of the U.S. welfare state, have gained credibility and popularity, even a sense of
inevitability. The working class has learned to consistently vote against its
Insanity Essay
The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success, as Bruce
Feirstein would say. The insane are merely the ones who are not given their chance
to change the world. They are, instead, locked away before society begins to take
grip on the ravings of the mad man. Genius, on the other hand, is what is created
when the insane are given their time to speak out. When Renfield began to address
himself to the question he was confronted with, he did so with the utmost impartiality
of the completest sanity. This leads the astute reader to wonder if renfield was, in
fact, completely sane but driven to madness while being locked within the confines
of an asylum. Even the sanest person may have insane tendencies when over... Show

When Renfield was speaking to the men on various subjects, he stated that, I am at
least as sane as the majority of men who are in full possession of their liberties .
Which shows that even the lunatic knows that he is just as the rest of the world,
and that he could handle himself in the real world. Many lunatics could, in fact, be
admitted into daily society. Dr. Seward does not know what it is like to be insane,
so he has no way of knowing what makes the insane differ from the sane. Seward
stated that he believes himself and the others insane and that he, expects them all to
wake to sanity in strait waistcoats. To put it simply, only the insane take themselves
seriously. That is the genius showing itself to the world. Seward stated that he was
beginning wonder whether or not his habit of life amongst the insane is beginning
to tell upon his own mind. If that be so, he is gaining a valuable asset in the fight
against idiocy. Accepting insanity can create the balance needed to fully understand
the world in a way considered opposite of the rest of society. When Van Helsing was
breaking the ice on the existence of vampires, he mentioned that the teachings and
records provide proof enough for sane peoples. It is as though he is saying that even
people that are completely sane should be able to understand that vampires are, in
fact, real. That creates an interesting
Steve Mccurry Photoshop s Controversy
One of most international well known photographers, Steve McCurry Photoshop s
scandal has sparked widespread controversy in worldwide. People argue about
whether Steve McCurry s use of Photoshop in his work is ethical or not. In my point
of view, McCurry s action is ethical, because he is not a photojournalist. Also,
photographyis a kind of visual art, editing is a part of it. Moreover, editing photos is a
tradition that people already accepted.
Body:
First of all, from the interview that Steve McCurry had with TIME magazine, he

Political Power Of The United States
The United States is currently built on an illusion of democracy where everyone
supposedly has an equal opportunity and say in society. The issue arises when
government fails to identify this injustice as a problem because the majority of
officials tend to benefit from increased political power. Economic inequality, the
uneven distribution of wealthin one direction, is the leading cause of poverty in the
United States, and the number of individuals in poverty continue to grow. The
government has neglected its citizens, and it has taken legislative favorability of the
upper class rather than the middle and lower class. In the essay Rent Seeking and
the Making of an Unequal Society , Joseph Stiglitz identifies rent seeking as a means

The main problem being the identification of a corporations as a citizens entitled to
First Amendment rights. The U.S campaign finance system has allowed legalized
bribery that influences politicians in favor of corporate interests.
Political campaigns is a method used by the people to nominate officials that harbor
the interests of the public. The Supreme Court ruling would allow corporations to
bolster any specific candidate in exchange for influence, and eliminate any other
competition, in effect limiting the choices of the bottom 99 percent of the population.
This gives legitimate candidates that harbor public interests an extreme disadvantage,
and it forces him/her to rely on individual donations or concede partially to corporate
interests. As corporate campaign financing continues, corporate politicians slowly
supersede the number of politicians in favor of the people. Through the years
corporations and the wealthy end up doing phenomenally well while the rest of the
nation suffers.
If the politician of corporations succeeds in obtaining a political office they begin to
propose tax cuts on corporate income, the wealthy, and deregulation of industries. As
a result, an already eminent problem becomes worse because tax cuts on the rich
make them even wealthier than they already are. On 2011, Vermont Senator Bernard
Sanders stated that in America

Essay On Dichloropropene
Dichloropropene Use on California s Strawberry Fields
California is rich in history. The Golden State was a destination for gold seekers and
is still the launching pad for many entrepreneurs. Californians have a special culture
for innovation. It is no wonder that Californians are dreamers, go getters adventurous
people. The first gold rushers must have been incredibly ambitious, albeit loco, to
cross the entire stretch of North America via covered wagon.
It is this spirit of innovation, endless work, and demand for nonstop business that has
driven strawberry farmers to depend on the organochlorine that is dichloropropene.
An organochlorine is manufactured from chlorinated hydrocarbons, or simply put, its
three essential ingredients are chlorine, carbon and hydrogen (Friis, 2016). While the
use of dichloropropene has undoubtedly boosted growth of fields and bank accounts,
it is known to do exponential harm. This is called bioaccumulation (Friis, 2016).

that application to skin will result in cancer, and that swallowing and inhalation is
highly poisonous (EPA, 1986). Further studies done with animals proved that
exposure to dichloropropene led to cancers affecting all organs of urinary, digestive
and respiratory systems (EPA, 1986). Some people might discount the findings of
these studies on animals because humans and animals might metabolize chemicals
differently. However, the adverse effects on the animals are so severe that it cannot
be denied that the pesticide is poisonous. The EPA reported in 1986 that workers
(those who would apply the pesticide in the fields) may be exposed to

A Dictionary Of The English Language By Samuel
Johnson...
A Dictionary of the English Language by Samuel Johnson was done because Italian
and French academies produced many dictionaries of their own tongues and the
English century authors feared that their language would soon disappear because of
absence of authority. They believed that a dictionary would do a big change since it
will be a book that people will need to buy. They believed that Johnson, still an
unknown author, would do a great job in creating a good dictionary. Johnson accepted
and believed he would finish the dictionary in three years, but it took him nine in
total; yet the quantity and quality of work was excellent. Johnson made a dictionary
that it known for its size (which was forty thousand words), the illustrative quotations,
and the outstanding definitions. He had used quotations from the best English
writers, and most of the definitions are clear of any eccentricity.
The Preface to Shakespeare is an essay by Samuel Johnson that praises Shakespeare.
Johnson primarily praises Shakespeare for his honest interpretation of manners and
life. He likes how Shakespeare interpreted his character and based them on real men
and women; and how he connected tragedy and comedy and still show a good
representation on nature where there is good and evil, happy and sad moments. His
characters are not exaggerated like they are in other author s works and have real
common feelings that everyday people feel. He believes that Hamlet, Macbeth, and
other Shakespeare character can

Many many years ago, the Jade Emperor thought that there should be way to

The cat and the rat were good friends but they couldn t swim so they asked the ox if
they can climb on his back to get across, ox said sure. When the race started they
jumped onto the ox s back, and when the ox was leading the rat pushed the cat of

The tired tiger swam came to claim the third zodiac.
Next to arrive was the rabbit, the rabbit did not swim at all, he just jumped on

Comparison Of Marxist Verxism And The Marxist Theory
And...
Marxist theory, developed by Karl Marx, is one of the radical law and criminal
justice theories which became popular in criminology in the United States during
the 1970 s. Though Marxist theory was opposed by many, its explanation of
criminal justice and law has a lot in common with conflict theory. Marxist theory
states that in capitalist societies, there are two classes of people within the society,
the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie is composed of those who
make the rules, while the proletariat class are to follow the rules that are made and
work. The ruling class uses the setup of the capitalist society to gain and retain
control of the political power. The bourgeoisie is able to use the political power to
sway laws in their favor that serves their interest. This leaves the working class
people to follow these laws which they have become oppressed by. According to
Akers et al. (2017), the only way for the proletariat to overcome the oppression put on
them by the bourgeoisie, they must over throw the capitalist society which hold them
down and establish a socialist system free of communism. Marxist theory holds that
the only way for the proletariat to gain power they must overthrow the government.
Richard Quinney s example of conflict theory suggests that the conflict between the
proletariat and the bourgeoisie is just due to the division between the two classes.
Akers et al. (2017) states that in the United States, individuals either belong to the

(Trend News Agency, 2010) Over 200,000 Thai nationals were working in Saudi in 1989, and millions of dollars a year were being sent home in remittances. (Ramsey, 2015). Thai workers dropped from 200,000 in 1989 to merely 10,000 in 2011. (Meghan A. McClincy, 2012). • 8. The Immigration Problem Of Immigration Since the 1970 s, the distinction between criminal law and immigration law has become increasingly blurred. In many jurisdictions around the world, undocumented immigration was long considered a civil offence in which violation resulted in fines and deportation. Now, however, illegal crossings are often treated as criminal violations carrying overly punitive consequences such as incarceration in harsh detention centers. The ever evolving assortment of laws and enforcement measures concerning immigration, as well as negative rhetoric in politics and media, has resulted in migrants being ascribed the stigma of criminal , alien or terrorist . This paper will explore the criminalization of immigration phenomenon broadly by detailing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially, our social reality is influenced by the state constructed definition of what is crime which often reflects the values of the upper class (Persak, 2016). For example, the trend seen in many cities in the United States of criminalizing homelessness through so called get tough policies reflects the upper classes desire for public health and safety, protection of economic interests in business districts and the maintenance of city aesthetic. Although, these policies do not address the causes of homelessness rather they exacerbate the problem and violate the liberties and human rights of citizens (Foscarinis, Cunningham Bowers Brown, 1999). Criminalization is perhaps the most repressive and intrusive applications of state power on a citizen and is often implemented, as is the case with the homeless, to target the less desirable social groups (Persak, 2016). Moreover, while formal criminalization in the form of legislation and criminal consequences for infringement works as a social control, it is not the only form of criminalization that occurs. Informal criminalization may in some cases be a more effective form of social control and ultimately lead to formal criminalization of behavior or come as a result of formal legislation. As stated by Hauptman (2013), informal social control measures are any social influences on compliance not
  • 9. Analysis Of The Blackbird Call In Grief Death is a spiritual experience that is flush with taboo connotations. When a loved one leaves this life for the after there are tears and grieving. This occurrence has been used countless times throughout history to commemorate the passing of a loved one, this makes it difficult to produce a piece of poetrythat discussed death in a way it has not been discussed before. In The New Oxford Book of Irish Verse poem 67 which will be referred to as The blackbird calls in grief , poem 108 which will be referred to as There are three ways to await death , and All That is Left...by Michael Hartnett discuss this taboo topic in new and interesting ways. These poems are distinct because of the way that the author represents death. These poems are related and similar while being vastly different. The blackbird calls in grief is an anonymously written poem from the twelfth century. The narrator of the poem laments the story of the death of loved ones. In the poem, the narrator laments to a blackbird and mourns the passing of both their families. The bird is personified by the narrator. In this poem, the death is of two families, the birds, and the mans. The harm now happened to him/ not long since happened to me (Kinsella 85). An analogy is created equating the loss of the two families and the injustice of the loss. The seventh stanza questions God, O You who made the world, / Your bias is hard to bear:/ friends all around me are spared, / their woman and young survive (Kinsella

One of the key thinkers of these movements was the Martinique born intellectual and revolutionary Frantz Fanon. Frantz Fanon (1926 1961) is widely considered one of the most important theorists of the twentieth century on race, racism, and colonialism. Fanon supported the Algerian war of independence from French colonialism as he worked in Algeria as a psychiatrist during the war, and he was a member of the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN). When it comes to the colonial situation, the Marxian analysis must be slightly stretched to deal with these realities (Fanon, The Wretched of The Earth, 1963). When he states this he is not saying that the Marxian analysis should be abandoned, revised or ignored. He was trying to deal with realities that the Marxist tradition often overlooked, such as the role the peasantry that is more than simply an auxiliary to the working class, a critique of the national bourgeoisie and its relationship to the proletariat and his rejection of a two staged theory of revolution. On these issues, Fanon may be said to be more in tune with Marx than many of Marx s followers. After Marx published volume one of his greatest theoretical work, he denied that he had ever developed a universal theory that is applicable to every society on earth. He also specifically limited his delineation of the historical tendency of capitalist accumulation to Western Europe alone and in his white writings on Russia and elsewhere, he emphasised the possibility that these non Western underdeveloped societies could get to socialism without having to go through capitalist industrialisation. When you look at Marx s work you find that he is not simply adopting a formula that he extracts from his earlier work in studying Europe, and then simply tries to put it on to the rest of the developing world

A Field Of Forces Within The Field As Bourdieu pointed out, no cultural product exists by itself, i.e., outside the relations of interdependence which link it to other products (Bourdieu, 1993: p. 32). These goods are also produced under specific conditions, not in a vacuum. This assumption is valid to art, literature, but also to journalismas a massive cultural production, like Bourdieu and other authors had demonstrated (Benson Neveu, 2005; Benson, 2006; Bourdieu, 1994; English, 2015; MarliГЁre, 1998; Murrell, 2015; Schultz, 2007). Thus, cultural products are entangled in a net knitted by different players, with diverse even opposite interests, forces, and strategies struggling to dominate what Bourdieu had called the field. Bourdieu defines it as a field of forces within which the agents occupy positions that statistically determine the positions they take with respect to the field, these positions taking being aimed either at conserving or transforming the structure of relations of forces that is constitutive of the field... it is the site of actions and reactions performed by social agents endowed with permanent dispositions, partly acquired in their experience of these social fields (Bourdieu, 2005: 30). The concept of field allows inquiring the complex interplays between larger social and political structures and the schemes of human

If someone has knowledge about something, they most likely will make wiser decisions about it. The more intelligence someone has, the more good and bad they will see in the world. Machiavelli and the Use of Antiquity in The Prince and The Discourses The Renaissance was a time of classical revival and a turning point from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period in the course of history. Ancient texts and artifacts became sources of inspiration for intellectuals and artists alike, and the desire to emulate or even surpass the achievements of the past prompted them to study antiquities closely and saw them as models and guidance. People were consciously distinguishing themselves from the medieval thoughts and using history to make something new for their own era. In the field of political philosophy there s no exception. Niccolo Machiavelli is perhaps the most representative and groundbreaking figure of this trend in political philosophy. With his erudition in ancient literature, histories and political thoughts, Machiavelli draws various sources from antiquity to critic and response to the political environment of histime. While one may find seemingly discrepancies in The Prince and The Discourse on the First Ten Books of Tius Livy, the use of histories as guide to demonstrate or propose ideal rules is apparent in both works. We should note that synthesizing ancient philosophy or thoughts with contemporary thoughts is nothing new. Thomas Aquinas, for example, reconciled Aristotelianism and Christianity in his work Summa Theologica, using ancient antiquity to back up his Christian beliefs. What is so noteworthy in Machiavelli is his emphasis and

Endogenous Opioids And The Placebo Effect Endogenous opioids are largely involved with the placebo effect, in which a patient expects an improvement in their clinical status, and can result in the reduction of pain without any real treatment. One of the main ideas behind this phenomenon is the concept of expectation, which is a top down regulation of pain. An increase in endogenous opioids can act upon the ON/OFF cells in the RVM, which can in effect turn off the pain signal, or dampen it dramatically, hence the use of opioids as pain killers. Proving the presence of opioids within the placebomechanism was determined by using an opioid antagonist naloxone3, which was able to reduce the placebo effect if there were strong expectation cues, but not as effectively when the expectation

The first concept illustrated by this meeting was the concept of effective management and planning covered in module 6. By the accounts of residents, it is clear that the city has not been effective in previous years, in planning the restoration and preservation of local roads. The city has not been proactive in planning which streets should be repaired, when, or to what those repairs should be. A common complaint of residents was that the city appeared to be content on postponing repairs when it would be more convenient and cost effective to handle the situation as soon as possible. I believe St. Augustine should practice a more adaptive style of management and respond to changing conditions. From listening to the meeting, it seems that the city originally underestimated the problems plaguing their roads and decided that certain areas could stand to wait for repairs. From the accounts of citizens, it is clear that philosophy is not going to stand anymore. In my opinion, I think the city needs to be more proactive and handle the deteriorating condition of their roads a lot sooner than later, and at the very least re evaluate old plans. The second concept demonstrated was collective action. Collective action is defined as a coordinated effort of several individuals or groups, who cooperate to accomplish specific goals. What was originally just a basic meeting to approve a budget quickly turned into a discussion on a major public issue due to the words of several speakers.

The study identified sixteen skills needed by forensic accountants. According to the study, the five most important skills are analytical skills, basic accounting skills, problem solving skills, data analysis skills and interviewing skills (McMullen Sanchez, 2010). Forensic accountants need analytical skills because as they review financial reports and other source documents, they need to analyze the validity of each transaction and determine if the company recorded the transaction fairly. The forensic accountant needs the ability to analyze where the data came from and whether the data accurately reflects the numbers posted in the financial reports (McIntosh, n.d.). With an in house forensic accountant, this will ensure the company s financial state is accurately reflected while an independent forensic accountant can verify the accuracy of the reports, both of which help investors determine if the company is worth investing in. Accounting is widely regarded as the language of business (McMullen and Sanchez, 2010, pg.1). Although, throughout this time, women have held many different roles in society. In the Iliad, Homer portrayed the role of women in his time as having a very suppressive role. Women during this period of time and especially in this culture are treated primarily as merely property and were used for producing material within the household. Women were often taken and given as if they were material belongings, due to their lack of choice and their unfortunate circumstances. However, apart from portraying women as pieces of property, Homer depicts in his Iliadthat women are sometimes conceived and introduced as suppliants to their masculine heroines. Homer depicts them as being inferior beings to men both intellectually and physically. Throughout Homer s masterpiece Iliad, women play an important but very modest role that entails their relative significance and the impact they partially have on some of the affairs that take place. The Iliad began with an argument, which is for lack of better terms, a fight over a girl, between Achilles and Agamemnon over Briseis, who was considered to them a war prize. During that time one of the biggest advantages of the Greek army raiding a Trojan allied town was that were able to loot from the town afterwards. Parliament passed The Treason Trials Act of 1696 in response to a series of treason cases brought against political opponents of the monarchs during the later Stuart dynasty in the 1670s and 1680s. This landmark legislation, which English policy officials spent over a decade negotiating, was a reaction to what contemporaries considered blatant judicial murder and gross crown intrusion into judicial proceedings. Judges, handpicked by the crown and dependent on royal favor for personal and professional status, fashioned a courtroom environment similar to piracy trials of the subsequent decades. With no jury of their peers, unrepresented defendants had little practical defense in the hostile environment that pre determined their guilt. The Treason Act was an attempt to try and correct the obvious deficiency in the court proceedings by chipping away at the prosecutions clear advantage. Specifically, defense witnesses were made compulsory, a power previously limited to the prosecution, and the court now accepted their testimony under oath. It provided the accused with an advanced copy of the indictment, and limited the evidence to charges listed therein. Most importantly, it guaranteed defendants the right to counsel during both the pre trial, and the trial itself for the first time. The drafters of the bill saw that treason trials presented distinctive problems that required special procedures, The seemingly unique features of treason prosecutions, previously emphasized the prosecutorial imbalance, the subservience of the bench, the complexity of the offense of treason appeared to contemporaries to demarcate the treason trial as a procedural world of its own, remote from ordinary crime. The Golden State was a destination for gold seekers and is still the launching pad for many entrepreneurs. Californians have a special culture for innovation. It is no wonder that Californians are dreamers, go getters adventurous people. The first gold rushers must have been incredibly ambitious, albeit loco, to cross the entire stretch of North America via covered wagon. It is this spirit of innovation, endless work, and demand for nonstop business that has driven strawberry farmers to depend on the organochlorine that is dichloropropene. An organochlorine is manufactured from chlorinated hydrocarbons, or simply put, its three essential ingredients are chlorine, carbon and hydrogen (Friis, 2016). The results of the test confirm that application to skin will result in cancer, and that swallowing and inhalation is highly poisonous (EPA, 1986). Further studies done with animals proved that exposure to dichloropropene led to cancers affecting all organs of urinary, digestive and respiratory systems (EPA, 1986). The EPA reported in 1986 that workers (those who would apply the pesticide in the fields) may be exposed to dichloropropene in the range of 0.15 to 23.99 mg/year (EPA,

  • 50. A Dictionary Of The English Language By Samuel Johnson... A Dictionary of the English Language by Samuel Johnson was done because Italian and French academies produced many dictionaries of their own tongues and the English century authors feared that their language would soon disappear because of absence of authority. They believed that a dictionary would do a big change since it will be a book that people will need to buy. They believed that Johnson, still an unknown author, would do a great job in creating a good dictionary. Johnson accepted and believed he would finish the dictionary in three years, but it took him nine in total; yet the quantity and quality of work was excellent. Johnson made a dictionary that it known for its size (which was forty thousand words), the illustrative quotations, and the outstanding definitions. He had used quotations from the best English writers, and most of the definitions are clear of any eccentricity. The Preface to Shakespeare is an essay by Samuel Johnson that praises Shakespeare. Johnson primarily praises Shakespeare for his honest interpretation of manners and life. He likes how Shakespeare interpreted his character and based them on real men and women; and how he connected tragedy and comedy and still show a good representation on nature where there is good and evil, happy and sad moments. His characters are not exaggerated like they are in other author s works and have real common feelings that everyday people feel. He believes that Hamlet, Macbeth, and other Shakespeare character can

  • 53. Comparison Of Marxist Verxism And The Marxist Theory And... Marxist theory, developed by Karl Marx, is one of the radical law and criminal justice theories which became popular in criminology in the United States during the 1970 s. Though Marxist theory was opposed by many, its explanation of criminal justice and law has a lot in common with conflict theory. Marxist theory states that in capitalist societies, there are two classes of people within the society, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie is composed of those who make the rules, while the proletariat class are to follow the rules that are made and work. The ruling class uses the setup of the capitalist society to gain and retain control of the political power. The bourgeoisie is able to use the political power to sway laws in their favor that serves their interest. This leaves the working class people to follow these laws which they have become oppressed by. According to Akers et al. (2017), the only way for the proletariat to overcome the oppression put on them by the bourgeoisie, they must over throw the capitalist society which hold them down and establish a socialist system free of communism. Marxist theory holds that the only way for the proletariat to gain power they must overthrow the government. Richard Quinney s example of conflict theory suggests that the conflict between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie is just due to the division between the two classes. Akers et al. (2017) states that in the United States, individuals either belong to the
