I have really enjoyed being in this English class. Just like the warning we got in the very
beginning, there has been a lot of writing. It was good for me though. I took English 101 over
the summer, but found I had quite a bit of writer s block. It was hard for me to get any kind of
energy to write. I found that interesting because I feel like I like writingis something that is
enjoyable to me. With this class, the activities put forth, meant to help us get the writing gears
moving, really worked for me. The first way we got a jump start was through the article
summary assignments based on articles pertaining to contemporary culture. In all honesty, some
of them did cause me to look at things with eyes I had not used before. One article in particular
that sticks out in my mind, is Stuff is Not Salvation, by Anna Quindlen. Through her use of
Ethos, she really brings to light how Americans have this ridiculous obsession with buying stuff.
She notes how we are trying to use junk to make ourselves happier, but in the end, as Anna puts
it, The happiest families I know aren t the ones with the most square footage (Qtd in Perspectives
pg 503). Before reviewing this article, I considered myself someone who didn t necessarily NEED

Bishop creates a soothing and comfortable image and tone. She sets the mood of the poem by the
repetitive syntactical use of language. Bishop does a great job with this by having the reader

the field of robotics. In this paper we introduce an integrated approach for search and rescue
operation of detecting gas sources in large areas; e.g. houses, factories, and labs. This aims at
saving people s lives at bottlenecks resulting from gas leak and ignition of fires. Experiment is
performed using master Khepera robot supplied with gas sensor circuit to search map, in addition
to two slave Khepera supplied with gripper to take the best path to clinch the victim.
Moreover, this paper proposes an improvement of Albers exploration algorithm to reduce the time
required to explore unknown map with different polygon obstacles. The proposed approach aims to
minimizing the overall exploration time, making it possible to localize fire sources in an efficient
way, as demonstrated in
Vrep simulation as well as real world experiments with Khepera III robot. A comparison among
different algorithms has showed the effectiveness of the proposed one where the percentage of

During this experiment the crude product (mixture of ortho and para nitrophenols) was run through
a column chromatography. The point of the column chromatography was to separate the
nitrophenols and purify them. During the experiment the crude product was ran through the silica
with two different solvents. 60:40 DCM/hexanes was used to form the first band while 50:50
DCM/EtOAc was used to form the second band. The reason for this method was that there had to
be a change in solventfor the para product because since it is polar it was expected to run very
slowly through the column and therefore needed a more polar solvent to speed it up, ethyl acetate.
As expected two different yellow bands were observed. Each band represented one of the
nitrophenols, with the bottom band being the ortho nitrophenol since it is less polar and stayed
within the solvent and therefore ran through the column quickly. The para product stayed at the
top because it was similarly polar to the Silica and had the ability to hydrogen bond to it. Once the
bands were formed fractions were taken from the yellow bands. Fraction 1 5 was from the ortho
product and fractions 6 10 were from the para product. The fractions formed were than ran through
TLC chromatographyto test the true purity of the products and the success of the column
chromatography separation. The first TLC plate containing fractions 1 5, surprisingly did not have

Carter Godwin Woodson s Life
Carter Godwin Woodson was born on December 19, 1875, in New Canton, Virginia. In 1892, he
became a coal miner in Fayette County, Virginia. While he was a miner, he decided that he
would rather go to school than do hard, back breaking work. He soon decided that would
continue his education. At age 20, he entered high school and graduated in a matter of only two
years. In 1900, he was elected to be principal of Douglass High School. After being principal of
Douglass High School, he still wanted to continue his education so he soon set off and went to
college. Carter loved going to school but he went to college part time because he was too busy
to attend the university full time. Apart from being a student, he was also a historian, a
publisher, and an author. Carter flew easily through college, and very soon after he got his
bachelor s degree in literature from Berea College. Carter didn t quite get his fill so he decided
to study at a different university, the University of Chicago. He soon earned his Master s degree
from the University of Chicago. He later earns a doctorate degree from Harvard University.
Woodson used his talent of being inspirational and a good teacher to teach youth. Woodson, the
son of former slaves, was an amazing man in his own right. Since his family was too poor to send
