Quarter 2– Module 1:
Identifying Key
Structural Elements
of Exposition –
Statement of
Position
The main difference between them is that an expository
essay explains about something while a persuasive essay
argues about something.
Three Main Parts of Exposition
Statement of position – need to start with a clear and forceful statement of
position. This is supported by some background information about the issue. You need to
write a strong opening sentence that provokes your reader's interest or captures your
reader's attention, and an overview of your thesis (or argument) on the topic and the
points you will make.
Arguments - need to be logically developed and supported, and justified with
reasons, examples, expert evidence and statistical information, and always begin each
paragraph with a key statement or general statement.
Reinforcement of the statement of position - this is where the argument is
emphasized. The summing up of the position in the light of the argument that has been
presented reinforces the statement of position and you could make a statement about what
you see as a solution to the problem or what might happen if the situation is not resolved.

eliminate free expression, cause teachers to
waste time, and are too expensive.

Greenpeace
When are human beings going to accept responsibility for the environment and for
the survival of animal species?
It saddens me to think that in our short time on this planet we have destroyed thousands of
animal species, punctured a hole in the ozone layer, destroyed vast areas of irreplaceable rainforests
and polluted land and water, to name just a few of our crimes.
The continual destruction of animal habitats to make way for spreading urban populations
or increased farming lands for growing food concerns me greatly. People are encroaching on
animals’ territory and soon animals will no longer have the space they need. People must work
now to protect animal habitats.
People are polluting the earth to such an extent that many waterways are not fit for
swimming. Non-recyclable rubbish is growing at an incredible rate. People dump toxic waste at
the sea or bury in the desert. Pumping sewage into our oceans causes the death of fish as well
as animals further up the food chain such as whales. Rubbish such as plastic kills innocent
creatures such as seals, birds, and turtles.
I urge all people to take responsibility for this earth we share with other creatures and which we
hold in trust for the next generation. Definitely, we can do it if we will work together.

Is the internet bad for young people?
It is now easier than ever to access the internet, whether you are using a computer, phone or tablet. There is no
doubt that many young people are spending more time online, with both positive and negative consequences.
One advantage of internet is that young people can do research for their schoolwork, and homework. This often
helps teenagers to widen their knowledge and improve their grades.Another positive aspect of internet is that people can
practice foreign languages by chatting to friends in other countries. This is also a good way of keeping touch with family
around the world.
On the other hand, there are also negative consequences. Some young people become addicted to online gaming
and this can mean that they waste too much time playing games. This can have a negative effect on their schoolwork, the
amount of exercise they get and their social lives. In addition, excessive internet use can mean that some young people
hardly talk to their families because they are always on the computer.
To sum up, spending time on the internet can have a negative impact on young people, but it has many
advantages. Personally, I think the internet is an incredible tool and the benefits of internet access outweigh the dangers.
However, we should be careful not to use the internet excessively.
