An argumentative essay is a
piece of writing that attempts to
convince the readers that the
author’s idea is true. This is a genre
of writing that is used to defend or
prove a point.
ARGUMENTATIVE
WRITING
A kind of writing where the
students establish a position in a
given topic and then use evidence
to persuade the audience to see
things from their point of view.
ARGUMENTATIVE
WRITING
A writer should do a thorough research;
gather accurate facts and figures before writing
an argumentative essay. This is more like a debate
written on paper. While writing an argumentative
essay, a writer should be aware of both pros and
cons of the argument and should try to discredit
the opposing view by using evidence.
ARGUMENTATIVE
WRITING
Argumentative essays attempt to
convince the readers to accept the writer’s
idea as true, by using statistics, facts and
figures, etc. while persuasive essays
attempt to convince the readers to agree
with the writer, by using emotions,
personal ideas, etc.
ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING
VS PERSUASIVE WRITING
In academic writing, this is usually a
main idea, often called a “claim” or
“thesis statement,” backed up with
evidence that supports the idea.
ARGUMENT
ARGUMENT
•is a statement or a set of statements that
you use in order to try to convince people
that your opinion about something is
correct. An argument is a discussion or
debate in which a number of people put
forward different or opposing opinions.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF
SUPPORT FOR AN ARGUMENT?
• REASON – a general statement that supports the
claim
• EVIDENCE – consists of facts, statistics, experiences,
comparisons, and examples that show why the claim is
valid.
• EMOTIONAL APPEALS- ideas that are targeted
toward needs or values that readers are likely to care
about.
PARTS OF AN
ARGUMENT
Issue- problem or controversy about which
people disagree
Claim – the position on the issue
Support – reasons and evidences that the
claim is reasonable and should be accepted
Refutation – opposing viewpoints
MANIFESTO
This refers to a published declaration of the
intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it
an individual, group, political party or
government.
Often used in a political context, it is also
useful to apply to arts and social change work.
It is an academic essay that
presents an arguable opinion about an
issue – typically that of the author or
some specified entity.
POSITION PAPER
SIMILARITIES
A position paper presents the writer’s stand or
viewpoint on a particular issue. Writing a position
paper entails outlining arguments and proposing the
course of action. In the same manner, Munro defines
manifesto as a document or letter publicly declaring the
position or program of its issuer. It advances a set of
ideas, opinions, or views but can also lay out a plan
of action. It is posted or distributed to the public that
announces information such as the motive, reasoning,
or demands of a person or group.
ADDITIONAL INFO
Topics of position papers or
manifestoes are: POLITICAL, ARTISTIC,
SCIENTIFIC and EDUCATIONAL,
PROFESSIONAL, and TECHNOLOGY.
The main objective of writing a
position paper is to take part in a larger
debate by stating your arguments and
proposed course of action.
WRITING A
POSITION
PAPER
COMPETENCY
At the end of the lesson, you are
expected to:
Identify the unique features of
and requirements in composing
texts that are useful across
disciplines.
POSITION PAPER
A position paper, also
known as point of view
paper, is used to claim
a one-side position on a
specific issue.
POSITION PAPER
A position paper is an essay
that presents an arguable opinion
about an issue. The goal is to
convince the readers that the
opinion presented is valid and
worth reading.
WHY CREATE A POSITION PAPER?
A position paper can serve to transfer knowledge
and understanding of a particular topic, provide
information to aid in deciding, or present a professional
perspective.
• In government, a position paper is often a policy or
position paper used to explain and implement a policy
or procedure.
•In a collaborative organization, a position paper
is often an issue paper used to help develop
understanding of a problem and build support
and acceptance of a proposed solution.
PRE-WRITING
Before writing a position paper,
you must identify the issue to
be discussed. The issue must
be interesting, valid, and specific.
PRE-WRITING
Research both positions
and collate the arguments,
scholarly articles and in-depth
studies from academic books and
journals.
PRE-WRITING
After performing thorough
research on a certain issue and
its arguments, you need to
choose the position or side
you want to support.
Your goal as the writer is to convince
the audience that your opinion or stand
or claim is valid and worth listening to. It
is important to support your argument
or reason with evidence to ensure the
validity of your claims.
The best way to defend your stand is to provide
supporting evidence which includes the following:
 Factual Knowledge – information that is verifiable
and agreed upon by almost everyone
 Statistical Inferences – interpretation and examples
of an accumulation of facts
 Informed Opinion – opinion developed through
research and/or expertise of the claim
 Personal Testimony – personal experience related
by a knowledgeable party.
In every claim, there is always a
counterclaim. A counterclaim is just the
opposite of a claim. When your claim says, “I
want a new cellphone.” But then your Mother
said, “'No, you don't.” This is your mom's
counterclaim. Counterclaims are also
provable and supportable by reasons and
evidence. Just when your Mother proves by
saying, ’Your current situation does not require
a new cell phone.’
All of these essential parts
play an important role in writing
a position paper. The outline
below will help you organized
your ideas in one coherent
composition.
STRUCTURE OF
A POSITION
PAPER
THE
INTRODUCTION
Write the specific issue, together
with its importance and effect to the
society. End the introductory
paragraph with your position
statement or your stand on the
issue.
DEATH PENALTY IN
THE PHILIPPINES
TOPIC
The death penalty is a government-sanctioned punishment by
death. Death penalty in the Philippines is stated in the Republic Act No.
7659 which is an act to impose the death penalty for certain heinous
crimes. It can be traced back during the Pre-Spanish time where Filipinos
although infrequent, is already practicing it. The Spanish also imposed it
on locals who rebelled against them, and it was retained during the
American Period. Today, Death Penalty has been again, active in
discussions around the country where Filipinos argue whether it is
practical, beneficial, and necessary if re-established. In tackling about this
topic, one must ask himself this question, “How can it be justifiable if we
don’t know it, we have established our justice system out of a desire for
rehabilitation or out of a desire for retribution?” Looking at the Philippine
context, due to various and particular situations, death penalty is
impractical, not beneficial and unnecessary.
THE CONTENT
The content may have several
paragraphs. In each paragraph, write
the argument that supports your
position statement, followed by the
supporting evidences.
beneficial
THE END
STATEMENT
On the last part of writing the
paper, summarize and reinforce the
concepts and facts presented without
repeating the introduction and its content. It
is also optional to include your suggested
possible solution or recommendation.

  1. In other words, an argumentative essay is based on logic and reasons while a persuasive essay is based on emotions and personal opinions.
  2. It contains factual arguments to support the one-side claim or position statement, but this will not limit the paper to present just only the strength but also the weakness of the position statement.
