Project 2: Explore a Field to Write for a Client
In this project, you will situate your interests and career goals by conducting research to
write for a client. Your client will be the University of Idaho’s Career Services office. You
will play the hypothetical role of a professional writer hired by Career Services to research a
career field or specific job within this field; you will compose a white paper based on those
findings and create an event flyer for a career fair. Both of these will need to adhere to the
UI brand identity guidelines. You will have two options to choose from based on your
interests:
Option 1. If you are interested in pursuing professional writing as a career, explorethis field
or a specific job within this field.
Option 2. If you are not interested in pursuing a career in professional writing, explore
another field you are interested in or a specific job within that field.
Once you have chosen an option, you will develop at least six research questions and
conduct research to answer those questions using the U.S. Bureauof Labor Statistics
website and at least three other reputable sources. Then you will write up the findings from
your research in a marketing-type white paper that could be used by UI Career Services to
create brochures and other career information materials for students.
Your white paper must include several graphics, including
 At least one bar or column chart that compares statistical data at the national-level
(US) and two other state-levels;
 A pie chart that compares percentages;
 A line graph that shows a trend over time.
You will decide the specific information that you want to show with these graphics. All
graphics need to be created by you using UI colors and other elements of brand identity,
but you may use source graphics as a model for the ones you create. Your graphics should
be labeled (figure 1, figure 2, etc.), captioned, and referred to in paragraphs by label.
Finally, to practice creating eye-catching flyers and posters using CRAP principles, you will
create a flyer for the UI Career Fair.
Project Deliverables:
Deliverable 1: Marketing White Paper of about 1,500 words plus the three
required graphics. Course materials will explain the required format for the
white paper.
Deliverable 2: Event Flyer for a UI Sponsored Career Fair.
Audience: University of Idaho’s Career Center (client) and the audience
your client wants to reach (students who are about to graduate).
