ENGL 202 Introduction to Professional Writing 1 of 4
Project 5: Apply for an Internship
Your work will be graded on having addressed all requirements in the grading criteria and
the level of mastery you achieved in executing these (see holistic assessment rubric below
the grading criteria for these levels).
Grading Criteria
Deliverable 1: Cover Letter
1. Format and Document Design.
 Writer's name and contact information is at the top of the letter.
 Font and document design elements are consistent between the letter and resume.
2. Letter uses following standard formatting conventions for business letter genre:
 Date
 Inside Address (full name of recipient and title; name of business, organization, or
college/university; address.)
 Salutation addresses a specific person, program, or business, and does not use the
generic "To Whom it May Concern."
3. Content.
 Introduction identifies the position or program and how you learned about it, ending
in a "thesis" statement that shows why employer or program should be interested in
you.
 Body.
3..1. Paragraphs target the position by identifying and describing your strongest and
most relevant qualifications, experiences, skills, and abilities. Descriptions
include clear examples of what you have done that invite the employer
program to review your resume or CV.
3..2. Prose style is concise and demonstrates the writer understands the importance
of not wasting reviewer's time with general statements that any applicant
could make.
 Closing paragraph thanks reader and ends on a forward-looking note that does not
demand a day/time to interview applicant.

Deliverable 2: Resume
1. Format, Document Design, and Content. Writer is is using the most effective pattern
based on applicant's education and experience and content targets the position or
graduate program.
 Writer's name and contact information is in a heading at the top of the resume.
All pages after the first have a secondary page heading and page number.
 An objective statement, if written, is not generic.
 Education section list the most recent degree and program emphasis. If writer is in
the process of earning the degree, an expected graduation date is given. Below the
most recent degree, writer lists only other degrees that have been earned. High
School is not included.
 Relevant courses, if included, do not take up so much space that the most
important content is driven to the bottom of the page or a second page.
 Writer has applied the CRAP HATS principles of document design to create visual
hierarchy using keywords to organize descriptions of relevant experience and skills.
All pages after the first page of the resume have a secondary page heading and
page number.
 Descriptions are written using fragments and reflect the same language used in the
position description and/or graduate program application.
2. Mechanics. Writing is free of noticeable error.
Deliverable 3: E-Portfolio OR LinkedIn Profile
If you choose an e-portfolio…
1. Theme and Portfolio Design. Writer has chosen and/or adapted a theme that suitably
reflects a professional identity. Pages / sections do not duplicate information.
Navigation is consistent. If used, banner images supplement content and do not
overwhelm it.
2. Resume. if the writer has chosen to post a resume, it is done in a visually interesting
way and embedded or directly composed on the portfolio’s web page. Letter is not
posted.
3. Sample Work: The portfolio is populated with sample work from technical writing
and/or other courses that supports employment or graduate program application
materials.
Work is embedded or displayed in another visually interesting way (i.e. writer has done
something other than use a PDF icon with link that says "download" to create visual
interest); writer provides titles for sample work with brief descriptions that helps
viewers understand what they are looking at and why.

4. Privacy: writer has taken appropriate steps to protect identity by not revealing address
or phone number anywhere in the portfolio.

ENGL 202 F2F Project 5 Assignment Sheet

  • 1. ENGL 202 Introduction to Professional Writing 1 of 4 Project 5: Apply for an Internship Your work will be graded on having addressed all requirements in the grading criteria and the level of mastery you achieved in executing these (see holistic assessment rubric below the grading criteria for these levels). Grading Criteria Deliverable 1: Cover Letter 1. Format and Document Design.  Writer's name and contact information is at the top of the letter.  Font and document design elements are consistent between the letter and resume. 2. Letter uses following standard formatting conventions for business letter genre:  Date  Inside Address (full name of recipient and title; name of business, organization, or college/university; address.)  Salutation addresses a specific person, program, or business, and does not use the generic "To Whom it May Concern." 3. Content.  Introduction identifies the position or program and how you learned about it, ending in a "thesis" statement that shows why employer or program should be interested in you.  Body. 3..1. Paragraphs target the position by identifying and describing your strongest and most relevant qualifications, experiences, skills, and abilities. Descriptions include clear examples of what you have done that invite the employer program to review your resume or CV. 3..2. Prose style is concise and demonstrates the writer understands the importance of not wasting reviewer's time with general statements that any applicant could make.  Closing paragraph thanks reader and ends on a forward-looking note that does not demand a day/time to interview applicant.
  • 2. ENGL 202 Introduction to Professional Writing 2 of 4 Deliverable 2: Resume 1. Format, Document Design, and Content. Writer is is using the most effective pattern based on applicant's education and experience and content targets the position or graduate program.  Writer's name and contact information is in a heading at the top of the resume. All pages after the first have a secondary page heading and page number.  An objective statement, if written, is not generic.  Education section list the most recent degree and program emphasis. If writer is in the process of earning the degree, an expected graduation date is given. Below the most recent degree, writer lists only other degrees that have been earned. High School is not included.  Relevant courses, if included, do not take up so much space that the most important content is driven to the bottom of the page or a second page.  Writer has applied the CRAP HATS principles of document design to create visual hierarchy using keywords to organize descriptions of relevant experience and skills. All pages after the first page of the resume have a secondary page heading and page number.  Descriptions are written using fragments and reflect the same language used in the position description and/or graduate program application. 2. Mechanics. Writing is free of noticeable error. Deliverable 3: E-Portfolio OR LinkedIn Profile If you choose an e-portfolio… 1. Theme and Portfolio Design. Writer has chosen and/or adapted a theme that suitably reflects a professional identity. Pages / sections do not duplicate information. Navigation is consistent. If used, banner images supplement content and do not overwhelm it. 2. Resume. if the writer has chosen to post a resume, it is done in a visually interesting way and embedded or directly composed on the portfolio’s web page. Letter is not posted. 3. Sample Work: The portfolio is populated with sample work from technical writing and/or other courses that supports employment or graduate program application materials. Work is embedded or displayed in another visually interesting way (i.e. writer has done something other than use a PDF icon with link that says "download" to create visual interest); writer provides titles for sample work with brief descriptions that helps viewers understand what they are looking at and why.
