Tangail is a district located in central Bangladesh covering an area of 3,375 square kilometers. It is surrounded by several other districts and crossed by several major rivers. The district was established in 1870 and gained its current form in 1969. It has a population of over 3.6 million with an urban literacy rate of around 46%. The economy is based primarily on agriculture, with rice, potatoes, jute and other crops as the main agricultural products. Several notable historical and educational institutions are located in Tangail, which has produced several famous political and cultural figures.
