Teaching Capsule "Passive Voice In Translation"
The passive voice is used less frequently in Spanish than in English and directly translating passive voice sentences from English to Spanish often results in unnatural Spanish. When translating to Spanish, the passive voice can be avoided by (1) reformulating sentences in the active voice without specifying the subject performing the action, as Spanish allows this, or (2) using reflexive verbs which resemble the passive voice by not specifying who performs the action. Examples are given of translating the English passive sentences "Juan was arrested" to the Spanish active sentence "Arrestaron a Juan" and "Apples are sold here" to the Spanish reflexive verb sentence "Se venden manzanas aquí".
