Sunshine to Petrol (S2P)
Producing Drop-In Fuels
 UNIQUE CAPABILITIES
 • Sandia is uniquely capable in concentrating solar, materials
development, systems engineering, and computing to develop
reactors, high-temperature metal oxide chemistry, and balance of systems
     efficiencies, cost, and cost-driver analysis.

 KEY PARTNERSHIPS
 • Sandia’s internal Grand Challenge investment
     ($14M/5 years)
 • BP, Solar Fuels Alliance

 CURRENT WORK
 • A concentrating solar-driven thermochemical heat engine to convert CO2
and H2O to SynGas – a flexible and established precursor to gasoline, jet
     fuel, diesel, and chemical components.
 • With biofuels, S2P balances the national research portfolio in alternative
     transportation fuels.

             Sunlight + CO2 + H2O → Fuel + O2
                                                                                  26
Solar Glitter
A Microsystem-Enabled PV Concept

GOAL Flexible
To develop advanced solar technologies and systems that will PV Modules
provide the US industry with a competitive advantage
worldwide in delivering solar electricity at less than 10 cents
per kWhr.

MOTIVATION
Double the efficiency and half the cost of conventional PV
systems:
  • high efficiency (cell level >50%, system level >40%)
  • reduced cost (module cost of ~$0.5/Wattpeak, system
     cost of 2-3/Wattpeak).

                                           Thin PV Cells

  1. Sandia began in the mid-1940s with a single mission around nuclear weapons design and production and has since grown into a broad national security laboratory encompassing a variety of technologies and programs. Sandia’s core purpose today is to help our nation secure a peaceful and free world through technology. We develop technologies to sustain, modernize, and protect our nuclear arsenal, prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, protect our infrastructures, defend our nation against terrorism, provide new capabilities to our armed forces, and ensure the stability of our nation’s energy and water supplies. Our science, technology, and engineering program ensures the nation will maintain national technological superiority and preparedness — keys to national defense, homeland security, and our economic well-being.
