- Body dissatisfaction is linked to poor body image as well as perception of self (Cinelli & O'Dea, 2009) These lead to poor development socially as well as academically (Cinelli & O'Dea, 2009) Cultural perceptions have been found to differ; Indigenous culture facilitates and encourgaes weight gain where as Anglo-saxon culture promotes weight loss (Cinelli & O'Dea, 2009). This can be very hard on young children, as they navigate through different cultures they are exposed to at school.
- Teaching healthy attitudes to combat societal norms. Peers and culture will affect a persons health. A good percetion of body image leads to better physical activity, social devlopment as well a psychological development (Cinelli & O'Dea, 2009)
- Obesity is now being recognizes as a pandemic in our nation (Dodd, Biggs, Agley, Dollman, & Lushington, 2007) A relationship has been found between sleeping habits and weight. Research has demonstrated higher number of hours of sleep correlates with higher weight in children and adolescents (Dodd, Biggs, Agley, Dollman, & Lushington, 2007). It is important therefore to allow children a healthy sleep to grow but also monitor regular over sleeping along side their other habits (such as exercise and diet). We need to remeber the 3 tiered ven diagram of Nurtition, excercise and sleep, as facilitate a balance between all three (Dodd, Biggs, Agley, Dollman, & Lushington, 2007)
- A large proportion of students suffer from some form of asthma (Basch, 2011). There are a number of triggers including exercise induced asthma which can make it difficult for a child to complete a task. Children will require assistance to learn to monitor their own health, and how to identify how far they can push their bodies. Children with asthma appear to be disadvantaged with readiness for school (Basch, 2011). This can put students slightly behind another average student. Asthma can also affect a child’s sleep as well as exercise which inturn affects their overall wellbeing and their ability to focus. Therefore, a child’s cognition can be effected. Research has also shown students with Asthma can also often be found to suffer from anxiety and be reserved/shy (Basch, 2011)
- Regular physical activity has been shown to facilitate in the prevention of a number of diseases and mental health issues in young people (Pavelka, Sigmund, Hamrik, & Kalman, 2014) Physical activities is one of the best ways of increasing quality of life in an individual, not only due to the effect it has on the body but also on young minds, as physical activity correlates to academic success (Pavelka, Sigmund, Hamrik, & Kalman, 2014) Physical education also trains a young person to work hard at something, and to have discipline which builds character, and creates habits of learning. High levels of physical education were also correlated with high levels of self-perceived overall health in young people (Kantomaa, Tammelin, Ebeling, Stmatakis, & Taanila, 2015). These students tended to feel less stress, depression and anxiety. Recess (non-curricular, out of classroom time to allow students to engage in physical activity) has been researched, as a means to promoting better physical activity outcomes (Parrish, Okley, Stanley, & Ridgers, 2013) In this way, students are able to engage in physical activity for pleasure in a leisurely manner. Schools facilitate this through accessbility of play equipment, markings for sports as well as open spaces (Parrish, Okley, Stanley, & Ridgers, 2013)

- Strengthen community action within the school, by teaching children to value diversity. Diversity does not only include cultural but also, mental and physical health. Students can be taught to be equipped with health knowledge, such as identifying when another child is having an asthma attach (Basch, 2011) Creating a supportive environment, teaching personal skills around health and mental health, eg. stresss release, managing anxiety,. Personal skills such as assertivenenss, decision making and problem solving can be taught. Mentoring relationships to facilitate healthy attitudes. Increase awareness in school community Some schools even start later to combat tiredness, especially for their senior students (Dodd, Biggs, Agley, Dollman, & Lushington, 2007)
- It is important to remeber to combat negative physical, and psychological health as well as social well being, schools can only do so much alone. Schools and families of students must work together to benefit children Create a balance of nutrition, exercise and sleep to give children the best chance at education and quality of life
