88% of companies all over the world have been going under an initiative they call «digital transformation». Actually, not all of the initiatives that have been named as «digital transformation» is really transforming companies, most of them are just automating some of their critical business processes and they are calling this a transformation. Digital transformation is much more complex than that. For the digital transformation to really make a company adopt to the new age, it should be involving these 4 components: customers, employees, operations and products. For a successful transformation journey , sub projects that are inititated under the transformation initiative should be managed via right KPI’s and real time. That’s why Project and Portfolio Management has become more strategic in recent years.
Project management is a tool to manage digital transformation to make sure that the investments are on track and aligned with the main strategy. Additionally it is a tool to empower the bosses to keep track of their businesses, empower the decision makers to make content decisions, empower project managers to have the control of the projects and empower all employees to contribute to the transformation and measure every person’s contribution.
In addition to Microsoft PPM, Microsoft offers a variety of team-based, work management solutions. These solutions are designed for all project types and project management skill levels. Starting at the bottom left, Planner and To Do are task-based solutions that anyone in the organization can use—not just professional project managers. Microsoft Teams is a real-time collaboration space, while Microsoft PPM is a full-blown project and portfolio management solution. For vertical-specific projects, Microsoft offers Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) for software development and Dynamics 365 for customer relationship management. Project Service Automation (PSA) is specifically built for project management within Dynamics 365.
with digital transformation, project management has to be more agile, with shorter sprints and faster outcomes. So companies now have a lot of strategic work items done related to smaller projects which span much shorter time frames. New project management methodologies like scrum, agile, kanban have been introduced to the project management era. to target not only the projects with high level of complexity, but it also targets medium tasks assigned to ad hoc teams and individuals. This is why as Microsoft we have introduced Planner as a work management tool and as part of O365 E3 suite.
