The economics of population ageing
An aging population will have significant impacts on healthcare costs, the workforce, and public spending in developing countries. As the older population grows, healthcare costs will increase both inside and outside of hospitals. The workforce will shrink as fewer people are of working age, which can lower GDP growth and standards of living. Public spending will shift towards the elderly as national savings decrease over time. Policy changes are needed in healthcare, the labor market, and public spending to address these challenges and ensure affordable services for the aging population.

On Wednesday, 3 March 2021, ESRI researcher Conor Keegan presented the topic ‘Understanding the drivers of hospital expenditure’ at the conference ‘Irish hospital expenditure beyond the era of COVID-19.’
The conference examined issues relating to expenditure on acute hospital care in Ireland. Findings from recent ESRI research, undertaken as part of the ESRI Research Programme in Healthcare Reform, which is funded by the Department of Health, were presented.

We recently shared the latest findings from our pan-london analysis of living standards, tracking 600,000 low income families across 19 London boroughs over two years. The work is unique in its use of large scale administrative data, linked over time, and its ability to look forward at poverty projections for individual households. The approach is being used by a dozen local authorities across the UK to target support.
Highlights from Phase Three include:
Low income Londoners are becoming less financially resilient. The proportion of Londoners with low financial resilience has grown by 20% in the last two years, and will continue to grow through to 2020
Employment helps build financial resilience. Employment is the main driver of people improving their financial resilience; for people affected, welfare reforms are a driver of lower resilience, but they don’t tell the full story
Living standards fluctuate. Over two years a quarter of low income households in work lost their job at least once; improving job stability can help build resilience

The UK population is aging rapidly, with the number of people over pension age projected to rise significantly in coming decades. Positive signs include March growth being evenly distributed across industries and spreading more geographically. We expect continued positive momentum throughout 2014.

Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).
