This document discusses empathic computing and collaborative immersive analytics. It notes that while fields like scientific and information visualization are well established, little research has looked at collaborative visualization specifically. Collaborative immersive analytics combines mixed reality, visual analytics and computer-supported cooperative work. Empathic computing aims to develop systems that allow sharing experiences, emotions and perspectives using technologies like virtual and augmented reality with physiological sensors. Applying these concepts could enhance communication and understanding for collaborative immersive analytics tasks.

Software development is an intellectual activity requiring creativity and problem-solving skills, which are known to be influenced by emotions. Developers experience a wide range of affective states during programming tasks, which may have an impact on their job performance and wellbeing. Early recognition of negative emotions, such as stress or frustration can enable just-in-time intervention for developers and team managers, in order to prevent burnout and undesired turnover. In this talk, I will provide an overview of recent research findings of sentiment analysis in software engineering (SE), address the open challenges, and provide empirically-based guidelines for safe (re)use of SE-specific tools in order to obtain meaningful results.

Emotion Detection Using Noninvasive Low-cost SensorsNicole Novielli
Emotion recognition from biometrics is relevant to a wide range of application domains, including healthcare and software development. Existing approaches usually adopt multi-electrodes sensors that could be expensive or uncomfortable to be used in real-life situations. We investigate whether we can reliably recognize high vs. low emotional valence and arousal by relying on noninvasive low-cost EEG, EMG, and GSR sensors. We report the results of an empirical study involving 19 subjects in a laboratory setting for emotion elicitation. We achieve state-of-the-art classification performance for both valence and arousal even in a cross-subject classification setting, which eliminates the need for individual training and tuning of classification models. Furthermore, we will discuss our ongoing work on the recognition of affective and cognitive states of software engineer during their daily programming tasks.

Nero-IR is a novel area of research under cognitive psychology, neuro-physiological methods (eye tracking, EEG, EOG, and GSR) and machine learning to understand information searchers and to improve search experience. Neuro-IR is useful in investigating the search as a learning process and to employ these sensory data as assessment of reading, mind-wandering and in inferring metadata features for machine learning models. In this talk, I will introduce a unification framework for neuro-physiological data; practically these models provide context for user interactions. I will show how we can take advantage of many existing interactions combining various sensory platforms (e.g., PupilLabs, Emotiv, Empatica E4). Information fusion can provide numerous benefits in combining multiple-sources of neuro-physiological data. The most obvious among them is the expected performance gain due to combination of evidence from multiple cues. As a practical matter, acquisition of physiological metadata is a research frontier.

Beyond Eye Tracking: Bringing Biometrics to Usability ResearchDan Berlin
User experience research has traditionally relied upon qualitative techniques that entail users telling us their feelings, wants, and needs. This creates an inherent cognitive bias – data is filtered through the participant’s cognition. That is, we may not necessarily be hearing the participants’ true feelings. They may be trying to please the moderator or may just be unable to articulate the cause of their emotions. But researchers and stakeholders alike are thirsty for quantitative data that complements the qualitative. Luckily, we live in exciting times – there are two particular technologies that are becoming more accessible that will help usability researchers break through cognitive bias and provide that ever tantalizing quantitative data: eye tracking and biometrics. Eye tracking equipment has only recently started to become affordable to most anyone who wants to use it. Researchers must now get up-to-speed on eye tracking methodology and analysis. When is it appropriate? How can we turn the data into actionable findings? What the heck do I do with all of this new data?! More importantly, we should find new research techniques that will break through cognitive bias.
This is where the second technology comes in: biometrics. Psychophysiology is the study of how emotions affect changes in the body. Changes in heart rate, breathing rate, heart rate variability, and galvanic skin response (GSR) have all been shown to be accurate indicators of a person’s emotions, among others. Just as with eye tracking, the equipment to measure these biometrics are just now starting to become accessible to usability researchers. Until very recently, the equipment to gather this data was rather obtrusive and invasive. This not only affected participant comfort, but also did not lend to conducting “discount” usability research. But new technology allows the collection of biometrics in non-invasive ways. For instance, Affectiva’s Q Sensor is worn on the wrist and wirelessly gathers a participant’s GSR. The problem with integrating psychophysiological data into usability research is that individual researchers will need to come up with not only the algorithms to interpret the biometrics but also the technology to temporally marry the biometrics to the eye tracking data. These are no small tasks. There are companies out there that will collect and interpret the data for you for a hefty fee. But this technique should be in every usability researcher’s toolkit. As such, we should come together as a research community to figure this out. We need an open dialogue. We need to share techniques and stories.

These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
