CASE STUDY
A Radio-signal controlled overhead
transporter dropped a few tons of liquid
metal on a worker leading to his death.
Cause was an accidental signal from a radio
transmitter that was mistakenly interpreted
by the transporter to get ride of the load.

CASE STUDY
Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences 7
12/23/2023
Between 1981 and 1987, five US army
helicopters crashed when flew very close to
radio broadcast transmitters. Cause was
the insufficient immunity of flight control
electronic system against high intensity
radio waves that produced uncommanded
movements while flying past radio
broadcast towers.
EMI SHIELDING
EMI shielding refers to a material
that is used to isolate a device or
system from the source of an EM
wave transmission.

Ceramics
o Less common for EMI shielding
due to relative low conductivity.
o Mostly ceramic-carbon or
ceramic-metal composites are
used.
o MXenes, two-dimensional
inorganic compounds consisting
of layers of transition metal
carbides, nitrides or
carbonitrides, with each layer
being a few atoms thick.

SUMMARY
Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences 28
12/23/2023
The shielding materials include metals, carbons, ceramics,
cement, polymers, hybrids and composites. The hybrids
and composites are the dominant avenues used to tailor
the structure for enhancing the shielding effectiveness.
Metals and carbons are the main functional materials for
providing shielding ability. Ceramics, cement and
polymers are typically not very effective, unless they are
combined with a functional component.
