Employing a Systematic Process to Update Pharmacist Competencies
In 2011, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
invited pharmacy education stakeholders, including representatives from 11 national pharmacy
organizations, other medical associations, government agencies, and colleges and schools of pharmacy,
to participate in such a process to explore needs for pharmacist education in the era of genomics. This
meeting resulted in plans to address perceived gaps in pharmacist education around pharmacogenomics,
including the need for developing updated pharmacist competencies in pharmacogenomics and
increasing pharmacy contributions to established educational and practicebased resources in this area,
such as NHGRI's Genetics and Genomics Competency Center.
ROLE OF PHARMACISTS IN PREVIOUS OUTBREAKS
• Pharmacists have been actively involved in various infectious disease outbreaks. During epidemics, the role
of pharmacists broadened from routine duties to preventive activities such as disease monitoring and
surveillance, immunizations, and diagnostic testing.
• Pharmacists played their role in effectively promoting an alternative method of supply and dispensing of
antivirals from public stockpiles during the flu pandemic.
• According to the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the role of pharmacists was designed in pandemic
preparedness plan for combating H1N1 influenza.
• Pharmacist associations around the globe have played a crucial role in pandemics to plan beforehand in order
to leverage all the resources to their maximum extent.
• To combat the shortage of antivirals, pharmacists compounded oseltamivir in the hospital pharmacy during
the influenza (H1N1) pandemic.
• Nigerian pharmacists helped during the Ebola outbreak by promoting infection control measures and
educating the public on how to avoid the disease spread.
• Pharmaceutical care, medication therapy, infection control, and immunization are among the top listed duties
delivered by the pharmacists during the Ebola epidemics.
• Pharmacists provided patient-centered therapy with stringent infection control measures during the severe
acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. They delivered the medicines not only in wards but also in
quarantine areas. Pharmacists have proved themselves as a valuable member of the team in health crisis by
providing information services and patient care.
• Pharmacists are known for reducing the workload of public health professionals during the measles outbreak.
Being an easily available, accessible, and trustworthy professional, pharmacists ran vaccination plans and
increased vaccine awareness which ultimately resulted in vaccination acceptance rates.
• Pharmacists played a valuable role in the protection of high-risk individuals through vaccination programs.
• The role of pharmacists is well-appreciated during the outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. The
education of patients and the public regarding the importance of vaccines resulted in increased vaccination
rates.
• Effective communication between health departments and community pharmacies was proved to be an
effective response to the influenza pandemic.
As with the 2002 competencies, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)
Pharmacogenetics/Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group (SIG) was charged to lead this
process. In 2012, a SIG subcommittee analyzed the needs for pharmacist competencies and
assembled an updated competencies inventory, which included the need for increased coverage of
the clinical applications of genomics to MTM.
Based on the desired outcome that, “pharmacy graduates should
possess competent knowledge and skills to seek coordination and collaboration of care with an
interdisciplinary team of health professionals when assessing genetic information,” the AACP SIG
led a systematic process to revise the existing competencies.
This process was conducted from 2012 to 2013 and included:-
1. Searching the medical literature to identify, review, and critically analyze existing
competency statements in genomics or pharmacogenomics for health care
providers;
2. Examining existing health care professional competencies to develop a revised
framework for pharmacists in the area of genomics;
3. Seeking consensus from a professional panel composed of nine pharmacy
organizations to gain approval of the competencies; and
4. Seeking approval of the larger AACP SIG body.
1. Pharmacists are one of the most trusted professions worldwide alongside firefighters, nurses, teachers,
and doctors. During the current pandemic when the healthcare system is collapsing amid the limitless
number of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, pharmacists can play a pivotal role in disease
prevention, management, and containment. They work in several localities and are linked to the patients,
either directly or indirectly. Health authorities across various countries are recognizing the value of
community pharmacists in the healthcare system due to their availability and accessibility to the public.
However, pharmacy services in infectious disease control and pandemic are least appreciated.
Role of pharmacists during covid 19 pandemic
2. Pharmacists have been actively involved in various infectious disease outbreaks. During epidemics, the
role of pharmacists broadened from routine duties to preventive activities such as disease monitoring and
surveillance, immunizations, and diagnostic testing. Pharmacist associations around the globe have played a
crucial role in pandemics to plan beforehand in order to leverage all the resources to their maximum extent.
 In public health emergencies pharmacists play a distinguished role in
reducing the burden of disease. Hospital pharmacists provide
pharmaceutical care and services to both in-patient and out-patient.
 During the COVID-19 pandemic, their duties expanded from routine
activities to the focused care for COVID19 hospitalized patients.
 Pharmacists became an important part of the medical team to improve
the therapeutic outcomes and ultimately the pandemic control.
 They also ensure the adequate supply and stock of requisite drugs and
other medical products in accordance to the patients’ demand.
Role of Hospital Pharmacists
Boosting pharma exports
Indian pharmaceutical
exports
of India from the financial
year, 2012 to 2019
have steadily grown
from $10 billion to $19
billion.
The industry is the
world’s largest supplier
of generic drugs and
controls around 18% of
the global market. It is
also a leading producer
of vaccines in the world
and caters to about 50%
of global vaccine
demands.
The already high
demand for Indian
drugs because of
cheaper pricing,
making these more
affordable to both
developing and
developed
nations.

  • 19. As with the 2002 competencies, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pharmacogenetics/Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group (SIG) was charged to lead this process. In 2012, a SIG subcommittee analyzed the needs for pharmacist competencies and assembled an updated competencies inventory, which included the need for increased coverage of the clinical applications of genomics to MTM. Based on the desired outcome that, “pharmacy graduates should possess competent knowledge and skills to seek coordination and collaboration of care with an interdisciplinary team of health professionals when assessing genetic information,” the AACP SIG led a systematic process to revise the existing competencies.
  • 20. This process was conducted from 2012 to 2013 and included:- 1. Searching the medical literature to identify, review, and critically analyze existing competency statements in genomics or pharmacogenomics for health care providers; 2. Examining existing health care professional competencies to develop a revised framework for pharmacists in the area of genomics; 3. Seeking consensus from a professional panel composed of nine pharmacy organizations to gain approval of the competencies; and 4. Seeking approval of the larger AACP SIG body.
